We are thrilled to celebrate our 100th issue of QCExclusive. It's incredible to think that we embarked on this journey just over a decade ago, and our talented team has since produced 100 issues, comprising over 15,000 pages of content. Over that time, there have been so many moments that we are thankful to have witnessed, so many amazing stories to have shared, so many small businesses promoted. We have also had the privilege of working with so many talented people and would love to show our appreciation starting with our staff editor Sunny Hubler and our staff photographer Jamey Price who have both been such constants for us. We have also worked with so many truly talented contributing photographers including the likes of Thien La, Kyo Nam, Justin McErlain, Joe Purvis, Michael Blevins, Justin Potter, Mike Anthony and so many more. And we would love to thank those current and former team members that made it possible as well from Barbara Herd, Fern Howerin, Ashley Carlini, Corey Miller, and Liza Carrasquillo to Eleanor Merrell, Kathryn Keller, Samantha Husted, and Alexa Giacomini. We have truly been blessed to work with so many great people. And than there's you, the reader. Y'all have subscribed, picked up the magazine, attended our events, and followed us on social media to the tune of over 200,000 who follow QCExclusive and our sister brand Discover The Carolinas. Thank you so much, from the bottom of our hearts! Sometimes, amidst the busyness, it is easy to take all of this for granted. It is easy to overlook how fortunate we are to be able to pursue this incredible profession. But then, when you sit down to write your 100th issue Publisher's Note, you reflect and remember all the great moments, and why you chose to do this. We love the city of Charlotte. We love the Carolinas. We admire all the small businesses doing big things in our region and we want to continue to promote them and share their story. And we are truly grateful for the opportunity. To mark this momentous occasion, our 100th issue pays homage to the very best of Charlotte and the surrounding areas. From the captivating charm of the city to the breathtaking beauty of the lake and everything in between, we have curated a collection that exemplifies excellence. We sincerely hope you enjoy this celebratory issue and we express our deepest gratitude to you for your continued support and readership. Thank you for joining us on this unforgettable journey to 100. It has been truly mindblowing! Sincerely, Jon-Paul Grice, Art Director Brett Barter, Publisher

THE PERMANENCE OF POTTERY Kaley Blank's ceramic creations stand the test of time. words ELEANOR MERRELL / portraits UNIFY VISUAL MARKETING product photos KALEY BLANK

@QCEXCLUSIVE • 17

CULTURE

“Handmade pottery is one of the first human crafts. It feels so fulfilling to learn skills that our ancestors developed to create vessels for food and drink, as well as to display stories and art.”

T

The path to pottery was far from direct for Kaley Blank. Her first career was as a producer in the film industry — a role she found unfulfilling and impersonal. While living in Warsaw, Poland, Blank adopted a routine of regularly visiting a coffee shop, passing a woman-owned ceramics studio along her route. Although she had no exposure or training in running a business or ceramics, each trip past the studio nudged her curiosity closer to action. When she returned to the States, Blank signed up for a sixweek pottery course that was ultimately cut short due to COVID. Undeterred, Blank invested in her own pottery wheel. Soon, her dalliance with pottery turned into a full-blown obsession. By the spring of 2022, Blank had refined her craft and opened her own studio — Blank Ceramics — which is now her full-time career. For Blank, the pull toward pottery is twofold: creating art from nature and tapping into an ancient skill. Not only is clay, the raw ingredient of ceramics, pulled directly from the

18 • QCEXCLUSIVE.COM

earth, but so too is Blank’s inspiration — “whether it’s the color variation of hydrangea flowers, the texture of chiseled wood, or the reflective sheen of a trickling creek.” That inspiration is grounded in Blank’s understanding of her art form’s history. “Handmade pottery is one of the first human crafts,” explains Blank. “It feels so fulfilling to learn skills that our ancestors developed to create vessels for food and drink, as well as to display stories and art.” Blank draws heavily on our ancestors’ regard for ceramics as both art and tool as she thinks about her own craft, ensuring that functionality forever directs form. “When I think about how I will design the shape of a mug, for instance, I always think first about how it will be held in the hand and how it will feel to drink from. That to me is the first, most important detail,” says Blank. That philosophy, combined with her keen eye for simple color patterns and subtle textures, produces work that is reminiscent of Japanese or Scandinavian ceramics — elevated in its simplicity.

CULTURE

Of course, every piece first begins as a piece of clay — typically Kentucky Mudworks and Laguna Clay — which Blank purchases locally from Carolina Clay Connection or Clayworks. Next, Blank wedges the clay to make it more pliable, remove any air bubbles, and ensure uniformity across the piece. She then throws the clay on her pottery wheel, giving recognizable shape to what was hitherto a lump of earth, before trimming to precisely remove excess areas of clay. The last steps in the process — bisque firing, glazing, and glaze firing — finalize the piece by ensuring its durability and adding color and finish. Outside her studio, Blank’s finished pieces are available for purchase online (through her website and Instagram account); at select Charlotte businesses, such as Toccare Day Spa and Sorella Coffee; and at numerous pop-up markets. As she looks toward the future and considers how her studio might expand, Blank has an entrepreneur’s eye. But as she considers what’s ahead for her craft, she takes a far loftier view: “Once a ceramic piece is fired, it will last forever; it does not deteriorate over time as other mediums do. My work will far outlast me, and I think that is a really fascinating thing. It keeps me humble and intentional about what pieces I create.” info blankceramics.com / @blank_ceramics

A few moments reflecting on Patti Doyle’s work, inspiration, and goals. words MERCY FISHER / photos JAMEY PRICE

Watercolor artist Patti Doyle has been comfortable with the canvas from a very young age. The Charlotte-based artist primarily creates beautiful landscape paintings, focusing on the Carolina coastal lands. When she’s not teaching at a local Christian academy, Patti is tastefully creating pieces that transport viewers to a different place and time, one of reverence and serenity. Often, she prefers to paint empty landscapes that reflect the creation around her, focusing mainly on tidal marshlands and coastal scenes. Here, she shares with us her beginnings, her process and inspirations, and her goals.

How did you discover your passion for art? My love for art developed at an early age. In middle and high school, I really learned and developed my style. I sold my first piece of art in high school, then continued to draw and paint through college but took a long break once I had kids. My husband and kids are big outdoorsmen and were gone a lot, so [during those times] I was convinced by a close friend to take a few refresher classes. The moment I started painting again, the love of art came back to me. I haven’t stopped since that decision!

As surprising as it might sound, the first critical step in determining whether we work with someone is based on their character/personality. Our business is challenging. I think we all agree that the more tax-free assets we have in retirement, the better off we’ll likely be.” What makes your team unique? Our team is comprised of multiple Certified Financial PlannerTM professionals and we have over 245 years of combined experience in the financial services industry. We were named a Forbes 2023 and 2024 Best-In-State Wealth Management Team and the history of our team is particularly unique. It’s rare to find advisors who have stayed at one firm for so long and it’s more rare to find a team with such a long history together. Is there a correct age or income to start talking with a Financial Advisor? While it’s never too early to speak with a financial advisor, most people seek out advisors once they are established with a career. Life events, such as getting married, expanding your family, starting a business, or changing jobs are good times to leverage the knowledge of a financial advisor and they can help you develop a plan to accomplish your goals. What is one of your top financial tips? This isn’t earth-shattering but it’s foundational for retirement success. I think we all agree that the more tax-free as-

UPSCALE AUTHENTIC Beloved Mexican food at Charlotte's La Capital MX. words LIZA CARRASQUILLO / photos JAMEY PRICE @QCEXCLUSIVE • 35

L

La Capital MX has only been open for just under two years, but you wouldn’t know that by looking at it. With its lively music, hearty cuisine, and relaxed atmosphere, La Capital MX feels like it’s been welcoming Charlotte locals for much longer. This is probably because it has — at least in part. Before opening in 2022, La Capital MX was the site of Luciano’s, a different restaurant run by the same group, Norsan Restaurants. Owned by Norberto Sanchez, Norsan Restaurants has been running restaurants across the Southeast since 1987. Like many eateries at the time, the COVID-19 pandemic caused a shift for Norsan Restaurants. The team decided that what South End really needed was a different kind of restaurant — one where upscale Mexican dishes would take center stage. “We wanted to provide South End Charlotte with fantastic modern Mexican cuisine and cocktails in a beautiful, yet relaxed atmosphere,” notes the team. “La Capital MX aims to bring the spirit of Mexico to the table.” That spirit is laced throughout all of the restaurant’s dishes, from well-known classics like fajitas to specialty entrees like their camarones con tocino — a dish of bacon-wrapped shrimp, chipotle aioli, and calabacitas with corn. Patrons can also try their share of specialty tacos, including carnitas, lomo, and chorizo tacos. Each dish is made with fresh ingredients and seasoned with the types of bold flavors and spices that feel like they can only be found at a Mexican restaurant. But the food menu at La Capital MX isn’t the only thing to get excited over. The restaurant’s team has dedicated a lot of time and energy into creating a drink menu that feels as fun as it does sophisticated.

FISH BOARD words SUNNY HUBLER / photo courtesy CHAPTER SIX

Chapter 6 is the newest offering from Jon Dressler and Rare Roots Hospitality (Porter’s House, Fin & Fino and Dressler’s). Located on the Rail Trail in South End, the restaurant offers cuisine from the western Mediterranean, including Spain, Morocco, France, and Italy. To get a taste of all the restaurant does best, we recommend starting the meal with the shareable fish board. Served char-

cuterie-style, the board comes with mussels escabeche (mussels soaked in vinegar, as a classic means of preservation), briny sardines and anchovies, olives, buttery marcona almonds, and gribiche for dipping. Gribiche is a thick sauce made from eggs, pickles, capers, and herbs. It’s both savory and tart, and is the perfect accompaniment to the crusty bread served with the fish board.

Hear us out: Comfort food has to have its place during the winter months, even if it is January. The authentic French bakery in SouthPark’s Specialty Shops

The croque madame is a rich, savory, buttery experience: Classically made with fresh white bread, butter, cheese, and ham, the famed croque monsieur becomes madame with the addition of a fried egg. CLUB HOUSE KITCHEN & COCKTAIL’S

MANGO DAYSPRING words SUNNY HUBLER / photo JAMEY PRICE

Club House is the latest venture for Chet Desai and Ricky Patel, the same team that owns South End’s Para. Club House will operate as the kitchen for Pinhouse, which is next door — customers now can order Club House food at Pinhouse and have it delivered.

If you stop by for a beverage, we recommend the Mango Dayspring. Made with fresh mango, a squeeze of lemon, and a splash of club soda, the rim is then finished with a little heat from chili powder. It’s a refreshing drink, not too sweet and nicely balanced with sour and spice.

THE INJURY LEGAL TEAM OF THE CAROLINAS “Highly recommend The Law Offices of Jason E. Taylor. Jason and Rachel were nothing but true professionals the entirety of the case. When my family first started this process we were completely unsure of what direction to go. With the guidance of Rachel and Jason they made a complicated process seem easy and were alway available whenever we needed them. Prior to continuing with The Law Offices of Jason E. Taylor we had sought many other firms that did not meet our needs, choosing Rachel to represent us proved to be the best decision we made. Layton Campbell of JLayton Interiors is a native Charlottean. As a designer and industry expert, he has experienced firsthand the growth and change of the city — and helped contribute to Charlotte’s evolution himself. His clients, Charlotte residents, desire unique spaces that are personal to their diverse tastes and needs and meant to keep up with the times. Above all, Layton strives to create homes that are classic, no matter whether they feature a traditional or contemporary aesthetic. His ability to do so has generated a loyal following of clients throughout the Queen City, and beyond. Layton also works regularly in Charleston, and, for a few select clients, in Nantucket and New York, too. JLI had a big year of completing some of its largest, most beautiful projects yet, along with several major features in national and regional publications which Layton calls “a fantastic gift.” During the busyness of the season, Layton sat down with us to talk about what’s coming up for the firm in 2024, his best tips for your own home, and how his business continues to grow.

Tell us about a few recent projects that you found particularly interesting. I’m over the moon about our project being completed in Cotswold. Seeing the culmination of a two year design venture is extremely rewarding. Also, the stunning new home being built in the Foxcroft neighborhood which has been so creatively fulfilling with the most trusting clients a designer could ever ask for. Do you have anything upcoming for 2024 that you’re excited about? I’m very excited about working on new projects in Deer Valley, Utah and Kiawah Island in 2024. I always love to combine work and travel. Personally, Les and I are thrilled we are finally completing our own mountain house in the Virginia Blue Ridge Mountains which is a legacy property from my grandparents. The architecture so beautifully captures the panoramic view. Stay tuned for some awesome images! Finally, I have a complete

I am mainly taking on larger projects that I can really sink my creative teeth into. It is more rewarding to have input from exterior finishes to the smallest details throughout. It is truly a privilege to work hand in hand with fantastic architects, builders, project managers and vendors. What has been most rewarding and what’s most challenging about business ownership? If you had to offer one or two tips to people looking to elevate their own interior spaces, what would that be? I would say invest in good artwork. It takes a well appointed room and ignites it with energy whether you are going for something tranquil or something electric. It adds personality and uniqueness to a space. Don’t cut corners when it comes to lighting. A PINK POP words SUNNY HUBLER / photo DUSTIN PECK

Ashley Delapp is a Charlotte based architect-turnedinterior designer, specializing in distinct mixes of vintage and new, layered patterns and bold color. In this Davidson home, she added a playful touch of pink, bringing both warmth and depth into this dining room. Ashley shares that the builder’s style for the house was “modern resort,” and so her design strategy here started with the wallpaper.

“Since pink is one of my favorites, I wanted to showcase as much as I could get away with while still meshing with the adjacent spaces. The builder didn’t really have many restrictions on the design, as long as the house was appealing to potential buyers!” The fabric on the window treatments are Parrish DeLapp fabric, the wallpaper is Clarke & Clarke wallpaper, the dining table is Aronson Woodworks dining table and the Vanguard dining chairs were sourced through High Cotton Home.

RICHLY COLORED LIVING words SUNNY HUBLER / photo CHRIS EDWARDS / remodeling SIMONINI BUILDERS

These local homeowners first came to Charlotte Lucas Interior Design to fully revamp their Myers Park home. The design style that owner and principal designer Charlotte Lucas leaned on throughout the home, including in this sitting room, was both transitional and eclectic. “The client herself is incredibly bubbly and bright, so we wanted the home to reflect this,” Charlotte explains. “As such, we incorporated bold, saturated color, lots of wonderful patterns and art. In one of our first meetings, she came in with a magazine cut-out featuring a variety of beautiful jewel tones.”

As is her signature with design projects, Charlotte pulled from a variety of sources to make this sitting room unique and incorporated several new pieces alongside the clients’ own. “The clients had many beautiful antiques and family pieces that we brought in, and of course, an extensive art collection, so we started out very strong with their existing inventory!” The room marries multiple patterns, textures, and colors in a seamless manner, setting the stage for easy living.

BODY, MIND, SPIRIT, BALANCE Much needed rejuvenation in the New Year at Western NC’s Prama. words ELEANOR MERRELL /

In Sanskrit, one definition of the word “prama” is “dynamic balance.” This is the meaning that resonates most with the founders of Prama Institute and Wellness Center, who maintain that, on an individual level, this dynamic balance exists between body, mind, and spirit, and on a communal level, dynamic balance must be achieved among people, community, and environment. In pursuit of that balance, Prama offers holistic wellness education from their sustainable community perched on a forested hilltop near the French Broad River, about 25 minutes from Asheville. In this scenic sliver of western North Carolina, Prama has established two separate centers: Prama Institute and Prama Wellness Center. The Prama Institute is a highly regarded retreat and conference center, while the Prama Wellness Center is the perfect destination for a relaxing and revitalizing getaway. Opened in 2012, the Wellness Center includes access to 120 acres of walking trails, five rooms that range from private to semi-private to

dorm-style, and a cedar sauna that helps guests sweat out toxins. Across these two locations, Prama offers three categories of services: juice cleanse and wellness retreats, meditation retreats, and health coaching. A wellness retreat at Prama presents the opportunity to practice yoga, meditate, and learn nutritional best practices over the course of three, five, or ten days. The lifestyle changes that retreat participants commit to during their stay at Prama promote weight loss, stress reduction, improved digestion and energy levels, and stronger immunity. Meditation retreats at Prama facilitate the perfect conditions for participants to reflect and reset, removed from the stress, hustle, and bustle of daily routines. Two distinct programs, the Silent Meditation Retreat and Joy of Meditation Retreat, give both veteran and first-time meditators the choice to either bask in the power of silence or explore the history, benefits, and application of meditation.
