NOTE

No. 84 Year in and year out, this issue — our annual Travel edition — is always my favorite to design. This year is no different. Over the last 18 months we spent a lot of our time traveling the Carolinas for our new brand, Discover The Carolinas. It has been such a fun endeavor: We have experienced so many new things, gone on so many new adventures, visited wonderful towns, and stayed at the best hotels and bed and breakfasts in North and South Carolina. You can check out many of those adventures on TikTok and on Instagram at @discoverthecarolinas. In this issue, we wanted to share some of our top Carolina destinations along with the very best hotels and vacation stays we have experienced so you can have an epic time enjoying our favorite region. Along with our travel Exclusives you can also read about a talented Charlotte artist, Mike Daikubara, visit Anne Neilson Fine Art for an art exhibit, sample the food at Oh My Soul, meet designer Jenny Pippin, go on a wine tour of Hendersonville, and so much more. This year, as the weather starts to warm up, we encourage you to get out there and explore our two favorite states, NC and SC, and see all the amazing things they have to offer from the mountains to the Lowcountry. Until next time, we hope you enjoy this issue, and join us for our travels on social at @ discoverthecarolinas and in the city at @qcexclusive. Cheers! Sincerely, Jon-Paul Grice, Art Director Brett Barter, Publisher

THROUGH MIKE DAIKUBARA’S EYES The designer, author, and artist tells us his story of navigating the world with a sketchbook. words SUNNY HUBLER photos JAMEY PRICE

@QCEXCLUSIVE • 27

CULTURE

M

Mike Daikubara is a true jack of all trades: The industrial designer is also an urban sketcher, graphic designer, and published author, most recently of the book The Urban Sketching Handbook: Color First, Ink Later. Now, from his homebase in Charlotte, Mike works as an Electrolux design manager and continues exploring his backyard, always with a creative eye and a sketchpad in hand. Daikubara began carrying a sketchbook in 2000 so he could communicate with more ease at his design day job. Now he sketches daily, both for work and for fun. A JapaneseAmerican, Mike grew up between Tokyo and New York City and attended Pratt Institute. He spent time between the East and West Coasts before settling in Charlotte in 2018. How have your experiences growing up in Tokyo and New York shaped you into who you are today? In New York, I attended the United Nations International School with kids from over 100 different nationalities, and many were like myself: Speaking English and being 'American' during school, but we came home and spoke the language of our parents and ate the food from their countries. Appreciation for different cultures came as a norm since I was constantly surrounded by my friends from all over the world and nothing was unusual. During the summers in Tokyo with my grandparents, it

28 • QCEXCLUSIVE.COM

was, in many aspects, the polar opposite from NYC. Tokyo was predominantly a monoculture, monorace country where everything had rigid structure and unwritten/unspoken way of doing things that kept the community together. I became fully bilingual and bicultural, able to easily shift my brain. I believe being able to juggle between the two extremes in my head has allowed me to look at every situation in life from different perspectives and to be able to make the best judgment based on the most critical understanding of the situation. What drew you to industrial design? My art history teacher at my first college in Japan introduced me to a profession called 'Industrial Design'; It was for people who designed pretty much everything that surrounds us in our everyday environment, such as computers, refrigerators, lamps, and chairs. I never knew such a profession existed and it excited me greatly since I felt that's what I wanted to do with my life. What is your favorite project to date you’ve worked on? I have lots of memorable projects but when I think about my 'favorite' project, it's always the one I'm currently working on. I'm constantly, obsessively thinking about it night and day, thinking about how it can be solved and how it can be made better until it’s completed.

CULTURE

Where do you get inspiration for your designs? Industrial designers’ approach is deeply embedded in trying to understand who we are trying to design for and how it can make their lives easier, while balancing the needs of the company, technology/manufacturing feasibility and while being conscious of what impact it will have on the environment. Everything we do is embedded in research, putting the highest priority on understanding our end users. How did you discover your love of urban sketching? I first started Urban Sketching (even before this term was coined) in 2000 to be able to get better and faster at communicating in my Industrial Design job. After years of carrying a sketchbook and sketching everything and anything, I not only got better at being able to visually communicate, but I fell in love with Urban Sketching. I now do it daily for the love of it. Everything has an underlying story to it, and Urban Sketching has helped me to see that in everything I do. Being able to do this has helped me in my career greatly. In 2012, you wrote “Hotel Sketch Mike: Hotel Rooms + Travel Sketches.” Why did you write this book? For 12 years, I drew every single hotel room and captured all the details/story behind the rooms from all over the world. In the beginning, this was done as an extension to the Urban Sketches I would do regularly when traveling but as I

“Design is a fascinating profession, but I believe it's a non-stop lifestyle, too. You have to really enjoy constantly observing the world, finding interest in people, thinking about why/why not, and challenging the status quo.” began to capture the details in scale, I learned what made it a 'comfortable' and 'safe' feeling room and what differences there were based on the country of origin. Those findings fascinated me. I'm a strong believer in outputting my findings to the world just to see what happens. I didn't know what would happen in releasing the book, but it turned out that after releasing it, I was interviewed by The Boston Globe and had three exhibitions of my original drawings. Out of all of your accomplishments, which makes you the proudest? I'm proud of everything that I have done; It's hard to say which one I'm most proud of since I always believe it's going to be the current one I'm working on! What advice do you have for someone who is going into design? Design is a fascinating profession, but I believe it's a non-stop lifestyle, too. You have to really enjoy constantly observing the world, finding interest in people, thinking about why/why not, and challenging the status quo. The hand skills/ tools will always be needed, but they are constantly changing and you need to change along and enjoy the change. If all of this excites you, then design may be a great profession to look into! info daikubara.com / @mikedaikubara

CR E AT U R E COM FORTS F ROM T H E QU EEN CIT Y Helia Forsyth’s den of cozy. words ELEANOR MERRELL

In 2020, we spent a lot of time in our homes. We hibernated like groundhogs, poking our heads above ground periodically to determine whether our shadows were visible (they always were), then settled down for six more weeks of quarantine. Wash, rinse, and repeat. We renovated and redesigned and revamped our spaces to make spending 24/7 in them just a little bit more palatable, developing a new appreciation for things like aromatherapeutic soaps, cozy blankets, and soft rugs — anything to make the long winter more bearable. Enter: Helia Forsyth.

photos JAMEY PRICE

Forsyth received a call in the spring of 2020 from her young cousin. She had bad news. She had been diagnosed with lymphoma and needed to start chemotherapy immediately. What Forsyth wanted more than anything was to visit her cousin, but COVID restrictions prevented her from doing so. She cast about for other means of providing comfort to her loved one, items she could pack and ship that would function like a long-distance hug. The search was harder than Forsyth thought it would be, or even thought it should be. That’s when she came up with the idea for Comfy-Cozy, an online boutique that offers products that promote a comfortable lifestyle, as well as more seamless and thoughtful gift giving.

CULTURE

“I think people spent so much time at home the past two years that they have a new appreciation for having things around the house that bring them comfort and peace of mind.” “I think people spent so much time at home the past two years that they have a new appreciation for having things around the house that bring them comfort and peace of mind,” says Forsyth. “Comfy-Cozy can help give people that warmth in their homes, and that brings me joy.” The Comfy-Cozy products straddle beauty and comfort. Everything is aesthetically pleasing, while also offering function. Forsyth carefully selected goods made from US-based artisans —more often than not, these are other small businesses—whose product presentation, origin stories, and quality inject luxury into her customers’ shopping experience. The shop’s menu of products includes everything from bath and beauty products to chunky throws, high-end candles, and nonperishable food and drink goodies. Additionally, Forsyth has assembled intentionally curated care and bereavement gift pack-

ages, as well as special occasion gift packages that rotate with the seasons and holidays. For now, Comfy-Cozy is exclusively an online retail experience. However, Forsyth hopes to one day open a brick and mortar location. “My dream is to have a space where people can gather, relax, and shop,” explains Forsyth. “I envision a meet up spot to grab coffee/tea with friends that is beautifully decorated with lots of plants and total comfy vibes. Shop at leisure.” Presently, there’s no question that this space will be in Charlotte. “My husband and I have lived here our whole lives and love our city,” says Forsyth. “Obviously, having an online-first footprint gives us a wider range, but starting local is most important to me.” info comfy-cozy.com / @comfycozy_online

SLOW DOW N, IT 'S TE A TI M E

Valentina DiMarco of Mémoire Tea sits down with us to talk about the soul of her business, the future it holds, and the importance of slowing down for a daily tea ritual. words LIZA CARRASQUILLO

For a lot of people, slowing down is easier said than done. After all, there’s always work to do. There are kids to look after, meals to cook, places to go, jobs to get to, errands to run…the list goes on. That hectic drive to always go, go, go is exactly what made Valentina DiMarco treasure the slower moments in her life, particularly the ones she savored while abroad. Yearning for ritualistic moments of relaxation, Valentina decided to replicate them by opening Mémoire Tea. Through it, she supplies Charlotte, NC and other cities with specialty teas and tea sets, as well as other items like keychains, stationery sets, and even baskets. With her shop, she hopes to show others that

they can pause the daily chaos with something as beautiful and simplistic as a cup of tea. During one such pause of her own, Valentina speaks with us about the inspiration behind her business and her plans with Mémoire Tea moving forward. What inspired you to start your business? I have always been fascinated by storytelling. Whether it be novels, history, films, or just the people that I meet. I wanted to create a world that mixed all of these components together. Enter, Mémoire. I had the pleasure of traveling abroad to France and Italy in the summer of 2018 and was instantly entranced by

their simplicity of lifestyle. They really value the idea of a “slowdown” in their lives, and what makes it even more special is that they have very set rituals that they abide by every day. Drinking tea is something that I had found is inspired by that ritual of stepping back and having a set time to relax. Why did you focus your business on teas? I’ve always loved culinary aspects and the universal ritual of drinking tea. I also loved that approach of sipping something that transports you to a different time and place. So, why not create a business that helps your mind go on a mini-vacation without leaving the house? How do you come up with new flavors and blends? I first come up with a story, then think about the flavor elements that seem like they would take place there. For example, “In the Mood for Love'' is named after Wong Kar-wai’s critically acclaimed romance that shares the same title…There are elements about this blend that help you feel loved and warm inside, wheth-

40 • QCEXCLUSIVE.COM

er it be the whole rosebuds or the black vanilla—but what really brings these two elements together is the black tea leaves. Black tea is excellent for building layers of flavors on top of each other. What’s your favorite tea? Why? “Underneath the Orange Trees.” It’s the very essence of summer, but you can spice it up for fall and winter…The best part is that it is so simple ingredient-wise; just orange pieces, zest, and oolong leaves. What's planned for the future of Mémoire Tea? I’d like to create an experience for all of the senses. In the future, you’ll see more stationery and accessories, curated secondhand book collections, and even candles coordinating with the scents of each blend—plus a top-secret writing project, but that’s all I can say about that... info thememoire.com

Planning a trip to a place you’ve never been can be a uniquely time-intensive and potentially stressful endeavor—and since trips are finite, the pressure is high to see and experience it the “right” way. After years of working as an executive assistant and project manager, Ashley Theis found herself looking for a creative outlet and a way to work for herself doing something she was passionate about; in this search, she settled upon the perfect solution to others’ travel stressors. “I love to travel and have been on many solo adventures… Finally, in 2017, I decided to venture into the travel industry.” Ashley started her business, The Constant Wayfarer, slowly at first, while also still working a full time job and spending a lot of time dreaming what her business could be. Then, in 2020, officially transitioned to full-time,

“despite the weird timing with the pandemic.” Today, her luxury travel consulting services include all the research, booking and support for clients before, during, and after their trip. She’s also able to provide access to the best travel suppliers in the world, which makes it possible for her to help plan trips big and small and to offer a yearly service for travelers who travel often, but who perhaps don’t have the time to plan all the travel on their own. From weekend getaways to longer vacations, or even just singular hotel stays or one-off luxury cruise bookings, Ashley has positioned herself to take care of all the details so you, the traveler, can simply plug into enjoying the experience. Ashley answered some of our top questions about her work and her best advice for vacationing in 2022.

CULTURE

Have you always had your own love of travel? Yes, as a child I used to travel with my family often. In college, I went to Europe for the first time and fell in love with it. In 2007, I did my first solo trip to London (during Kate and Will’s royal wedding), and it changed everything for me. Travel is truly transformative when you can slow down and experience a destination. Meeting new people and seeing beautiful places helps us see the world with more empathy and perspective than just reading about a place or hearing about a place in the news, and that’s why I love to travel so much.

“Meeting new people and seeing beautiful places helps us see the world with more empathy and perspective than just reading about a place or hearing about a place in the news.”

What are some of the major benefits to booking a trip through an advisor? Now, years into a pandemic, the travel landscape has completely changed. I am on hand while my clients travel should they need to troubleshoot anything but am also walking them through what tests they need, entry forms to fill out or travel insurance to purchase. I think a lot of travelers learned that you can’t rely on some of the big online travel agencies... My services are personalized, and I love becoming friends with my clients. Hearing about hobbies and interests and travel goals means not only can I curate a trip that really reflects who clients are and how they like to travel, but also have an ongoing relationship with them. Together, we can really build a travel portfolio of incredible experiences! Using Charlotte as a homebase, what are some of the easiest places to travel to? Charlotte is a great location to get to several popular destinations: Charleston, Savannah, Asheville all being an easy drive away. There are so many places that are great and a relatively short plane ride away like New York, Boston, Miami and tropical destinations like Turks and Caicos and Mexico. Tell us: What can someone expect when booking travel through you? We set up a time to talk through the details of their trip as well as questions about their previous travel experiences, hobbies, favorite trips, least favorite trips and the overall vision and vibe they are looking for. I send my clients a personalized proposal, along with a video walk-through of the details. We can revise it until they are happy, and then I take care of booking all components and adding in the fun stuff like dining suggestions, any extra activities or spa appointments. All the concierge aspects are taken care of and all you have to do is pack your bags and have fun. I am on hand the whole time should clients need to troubleshoot anything. Then they come home, we recap the trip and start talking about the next one! What's a favorite memory shared from a client about their trip? I have had the honor of being a part of a surprise engagement in front of the picturesque Neuschwanstein castle in Germany for clients who then asked me to put together their Hawaiian honeymoon. Being a part of those big life moments in such a small way is the best part of my job.

CULTURE

What is your best travel tip? Pack your patience and be kind. Airports and hotels are short-staffed and have more work now than ever. Wait times are longer and plans change at a moment's notice. You've got to be patient and flexible right now as plans can change quickly. But, that is even more reason to use a travel advisor. We know how to calm you down and give you some alternate options so you can still enjoy your trip. Is there anything else we should know? Travel for 2022 is insanely busy already. Popular destinations like Italy and Greece are already booked for the summer and availability is hard to come by. If you already know what your travel dreams are for this year, reach out sooner rather than later. In 2021, once people started traveling more, I had the same amount of trips booked for clients in 5 months than I normally do in a full year! It’s bouncing back maybe a little quicker than we realized it would and 2022 is going to be even busier. info theconstantwayfarer.com / @theconstantwayfarer

One of the friendliest buildings on North Davidson Street is a robin’s egg blue bungalow, catty-corner to the Johnston YMCA. In the spring and summer, flowers blossom in boxes along the front sidewalk, framed by a welcoming white porch. Some days, you might spot a dog tugging his human toward the back garden, confident that treats lie ahead. This is Oh My Soul.

To understand the heart of this restaurant, as well as its introduction to the streets of Charlotte, you have to look back a few decades. Moreover, you must peer across the Atlantic Ocean to the colorful streets of South Africa. Oh My Soul has three proprietors: Jake Davies, Tallulah Duffin, and Richard Duffin, all of whom hail from South Africa. Eight years ago, Jake moved to Charlotte, prompting regular stateside visits from Tallulah and Richard. Eventually, they followed suit. “NoDa stole our hearts,” says Tallulah. “It is so unique and eclectic, absolutely everything we love. And the sense of community speaks volumes. Oh My Soul is one of a kind so we knew we would fit right in.” When they moved here, they came bearing gifts for the Charlotte community. First, they brought the quality of “Ubuntu,” the belief that we are all defined by our compassion and humanity towards others. Second, they brought a commitment to enabling vegan lifestyles. And third, they brought Gran’s recipes. Armed with these, the team set to work opening a Char-

lotte Oh My Soul location (the original location is located in Kwa-Zulu Natal), which would become the city’s first vegan deli and one of its top vegan restaurants. “Our South African roots are our inspiration for our menu,” says Tallulah. “South African food is packed with flavors and, of course, some spice!” The menu is diverse, ranging from vegan twists on American classics to vegan twists on South African classics, encompassing every blend and iteration in between. There’s lots of pizzazz for the adventurous palate, as well as easy entry points to vegan eating for the meat fanatics. “We switch it up every season, always pushing the boundaries on veganism by bringing in new dishes that amaze our non-vegan customers,” says Tallulah. The overwhelming majority of Oh My Soul dishes are made in house. Quality and authenticity are paramount. Quality and authenticity are paramount, which is evident in the resulting food and craft cocktails. Diners can taste the culinary passion of the kitchen staff and the global flavors from the restaurant's urban garden in every bite.

The inside of Oh My Soul looks like the love child of farmhouse chic and bohemian design. Tallulah oversaw the design and gave the interior the same treatment as the menu — peppering the dining area with South African patterns and colors, while also making very intentional decisions about conveying the restaurant’s core values, particularly related to veganism. Behind the bungalow, Oh My Soul maintains an outdoor eating space that has been evolving from the day the restaurant opened. Centered around a 100-year-old oak tree, picnic and cafe tables now rest under rain/sun covers, festooned with colorful fabrics and soft lights. The Watering Hole, an outdoor bar, lies in wait for anyone craving a craft cocktail, South African wine, or local beer. When Tallullah, Jake, and Richard first became vegan, their hometowns had little to offer. Meat substitutes were non-existent and dairy alternatives were rare. “We thought to ourselves, ‘how on earth are people going to transition if they have no vegan options available to them?’ So we decided to open the first vegan restaurant in Kwa-Zulu Natal to hopefully create a new compassionate wave for people to follow.” Here in America, the team continues their spread of that wave, while dreaming of an even bigger one, one that spreads far and wide and adheres to the owners’ core mantra: my soul honors your soul. info ohmysoulusa.com / @ohmysoulusa

SPREADING THE LOVE, ONE CAKE AT A TIME Sunnie McCain introduces a classic Southern dessert to the Queen City in honor of her late grandmother and the cherished memories they shared. words LIZA CARRASQUILLO

A dessert is often so much more than just something sweet. For some, it’s a way to pause the day and focus on something delectable. For others, it’s a happy way to celebrate an occasion or enjoy a tasty reward. And for Sunnie McCain, it’s a way to reconnect with cherished memories and spread the love to those who need it. Her commitment to maintaining that connection and pouring her heart into everything she bakes is exactly what makes Mama Ward’s Little Layer Cakes such a special business. Officially founded in 2015, Mama Ward’s has steadily grown to become a local favorite for custom cakes—little layer cakes, that is. These unique cakes, while well-known further south in areas like Alabama and Georgia, haven’t been quite as popular around Charlotte. McCain’s business is slowly changing that. The cakes are made with stacks of thin layers coated in boiled icing. McCain’s grandmother—Mama

Ward, as she was affectionately called—loved baking these treats for her family, but never had the chance to pass on her recipes before she died. Both the cake layers and the icing require special time-honored methods to produce, and McCain’s gone through her fair share of trial and error to get them all as close to her grandmother’s as possible. “I started baking this particular cake in 2012, and it took a good year to solidify the tips and techniques of a boiled icing little layer cake,” notes McCain. “This was a whole underground Southern woman’s secret, and no one shared it with me. I was on my own!” Her persistence has definitely paid off, allowing her to create custom cakes fulltime using both a set menu and collaborative requests. In addition to menu favorites like her Caramel cake, Funfetti cake or Key Lime Pie cake, she’s also done custom flavors like a guava cake. “I find it fun to play with new ingredients and grow myself! Not to say I haven’t had moments where things definitely had to be thrown out and made again. Even on the best days,

one can have a failure for some small reason and it’s back to square one.” Having now transitioned to baking fulltime, McCain finds it easier to focus on her craft and have less of those “fail” days. This focus has made it easier to not only serve more custom clients, but also to forge new partnerships. While Mama Ward’s remains a custom cake bakery at heart, the business will soon be selling the cakes out of Mattie’s Diner once they reopen. “The diner speaks to my soul. They are so supportive and aware of the community around them…and I’m humbled and in love with the fact that they sought out these cakes to make them a feature item in their business.” Those looking to taste one of McCain’s little layer cakes can visit her website and order something sweet and soulfully Southern for themselves. info mamawardslittlelayercakes.com / @mamawardslittlelayercakes

What separates a “great" craft beer house from just a “good” one often comes down to the level of care that actually goes into the craft part of the process. Growlers Pourhouse was created by and for beer lovers in every sense of the phrase, which is why their brews have become so popular. The fact that they’ve built out an enticing craft food menu to go along with everything else is an impressive and

welcomed feat—especially when it comes to their desserts. Their frozen honey doughnuts are simple, delicate treats that pack a ton of flavor without being overly sweet. The light, airy whipped cream elevates the doughnuts just enough to feel like a complete dessert. Whether they’re a fun addition after an entrée or a standalone special treat, these doughnuts are the type that guests can’t get enough of.

What made you want to become an Architectural Designer? You could say I was born into it! As a creative child, I knew I’d grow up to be an artist of some sort, and I've always had a fascination with all different styles of houses. I was raised on a farm by a family of entrepreneurs, where I was exposed to nature every day. I had the sense that I would one day lead my own company, incorporating my passions of art, nature, and my entrepreneurial mindset. Someone recommended that I consider an Architectural Technology program, and that it would combine my love of art, drawing, nature, and homes. It was the best advice I ever received! The program was as easy as breathing for me. I learned I have an ability, a sixth sense, to intuitively design dwellings into natural settings by listening to the land, and combining it with the homeowners desires, because my connection to nature is a big part of who I am and what I incorporate in my designs. How would you describe your design style? It’s all about the views! Pippin Home Designs’ specialty is designing to maximize the views offered by each individual property from lakefront to mountainside vistas, the beach, farms, forests, and even equestrian estates. Where there’s a view to be taken advantage of, we’ve created a home to enhance it. [Our focus on views] began in 1987; I moved to Mooresville and rented a home

“Designing someone’s home is an intimate process, we consider the whole human by taking the time to get to know each client and how they want to live their life.” on Lake Norman. Living on this lakefront property gave me the first-hand experience of the way a fabulous view can make you feel in your home! How do you describe Pippin’s unique style or approach? We consider ourselves consumer advocates and educating our clients is one of our deep passions. We’ve been doing this for a very long time and few clients understand all that’s needed to successfully navigate the home design and building process. We know this industry inside and out, and we love sharing our knowledge with our clients to help them make the very best choices for their homes. Our “You-Inspired Discovery Process” is our holistic approach to design. Designing someone’s home is an intimate process, we consider the whole human by taking the time to get to know each client and how they want to live their life. All of these components tie into the overall project scope, and we educate our clients about high performance, green and sustainable options, and ways to design for a healthy home. Your husband is also part of the team. Tell us about his role. The success of Pippin Home Designs has been greatly enhanced by the addition of my husband and superhero, Wes Stearns, in 2014. He is my forever teammate, partner in life and in business. He supports me, and our clients, with his skills in 3-D CADD, and his invaluable input as a professional photographer and artist. TR AVEL What are some of the main things you focus on to accentuate a view? I walk the property with each client at the beginning of the process to get a feel for why they chose the property. I consider the views they have available and even ones they may wish to block. We evaluate the lay of the land (topography), and the path of the sun across the property, along with the existing trees and other vegetation to maintain and design around. Working with the path of the sun allows us to utilize morning sun inside the home and shade the afternoon sun to prevent overheating the interior spaces, incorporating covered porches and overhangs in the right places, we’re able to capture and frame the perfect views possible year-round! In addition to capturing the views, we also share our knowledge about high performance homes, healthy homes, and designing for accessibility in every home. Many of our clients are renovating or building their forever homes, and it’s important to also consider ways to accommodate family and friends, so everyone is able to comfortably move around within their homes no matter their age or physical abilities. info pippinhomedesigns.com / @pippinhomedesigns

Kendra Tardif White is the mastermind behind Pheasant Hill Designs, an award-winning design firm based here in Charlotte. Kendra’s work is all about striking a delicate balance between function, comfort, and style. She believes that the interior of your home should intrinsically speak to who you are as a person. For this room, Kendra was tasked with converting a rarely used formal living space into a cozy study. Her client wanted

the room to have a more traditionally masculine feel to it, as compared to the rest of the home. For the chair and ottoman, PHD used a luxurious linen colored suede. The reading nook is finished with a floor lamp from Robert Abbey Lighting so that the homeowner can easily read his newspaper and enjoy a cup of coffee (or a cocktail) in the privacy of his study. Alexis Pawling lets us step inside her own home. words ELEANOR MERRELL / photos LAURA SUMRAK

When interior designer Alexis Pawling begins working with a client, her first objective is to understand that individual’s aesthetic. Together, Alexis and the client will reach for examples of what tickles the client’s fancy, and, of course, they find examples of what does not work. The exchange is a flurry of Pinterest and Instagram links, until things start to come into focus for Pawling. “I basically voluntarily fall down a rabbit hole, gathering all sorts of ideas to create an overall aesthetic,” she explains.

81 • QCEXCLUSIVE.COM

In a recent new home build, understanding the client’s aesthetic was easy for Pawling, given that she was the client. She and her family of two daughters, three dogs, and a husband had lived on a Myers Park property for ten years, sharing a 1951 ranch home before tearing down the house and completing a new build on the same property in 2020. “I had ten years to dream up exactly what I wanted our home to look like and how I wanted it to function,” explains Pawling.

HOME & DESIGN

The Journey to Home — The ranch home already had character aplenty, but it lacked natural light and space. Low ceilings, a characteristic of older homes, made the house feel cramped and dark. Plus, as the family grew, adding more dogs and daughters to the brood, the square footage couldn’t keep up with the family’s needs. Pawling’s ultimate goals for her new space were functionality that promoted comfort and livability, an aesthetic that evoked elegance as well as youthful style, and a structure that allowed for an airy brightness. It was also important to Pawling that her home blend in with the rest of her street. “It needed to be stylistically appropriate as well as size appropriate for our lot and the neighborhood,” says Pawling. The result from architect Karen Barton and builders Mills Eloge is a 4,000 square foot beauty that includes five bedrooms, four baths, a living room, a den, an office, a media room, and a playroom. Ten foot ceilings and oversized custom windows throughout the house help achieve the bright and airy bones that were so important to Pawling. Additionally, the windows provide visual access to the green spaces that border the home, including the wooded lot of Freedom Park’s Nature Museum, introducing a level of serenity that might have seemed impossible so close to Uptown.

“I basically voluntarily fall down a rabbit hole, gathering all sorts of ideas to create an overall aesthetic.”

An Airy Arrival — Pawling applied a transitional/modern design to the interior, dappled with vintage pieces, a dash of color, and sprinkle of whimsy. “I suppose a common theme throughout my home when looking at furniture style, paint colors, and fabrics is that I kept the majority clean, fresh, transitional, and somewhat neutral, then used strong pops of color throughout to give a modern and artistic flare,” explains Pawling. The new build offered an opportunity for Pawling to pull out all the stops and really let loose with some of her more experimental design ideas — wallpapered ceilings, bold lacquer splashes, statement light fixtures, and beyond. She worked with an impressively long list of vendors, including local lighting professionals Lantern & Scroll (exterior gas lanterns), local glass professionals Accent Glass (entryway mirror and bar backsplash), and local furniture builder Josh Utsey (dining room table). The end result is a perfect balance of modern, elegant, and colorful. Pawling’s restraint in terms of whimsy and color is evident and allows for a very complementary pairing of styles and palettes, making the ten years that she spent dreaming and scheming about this home incredibly evident. info alexispawlinginteriors.com / @alexispawlinginteriors Full list of vendors at qcexclusive.com

A TASTE OF BORDEAUX IN THE BLUE RIDGE Take a trip to Hendersonville Wine Country. photos courtesy HENDERSON COUNTY TOURISM

The Blue Ridge Mountains of North Carolina and the hillsides of Europe are separated by thousands of miles. But spend a few days in Hendersonville, NC — visiting wineries, sipping bold, dry reds and crisp whites, and admiring rolling vineyards — and you might think you’re on the other side of the Atlantic. Hendersonville’s Crest of the Blue Ridge AVA received federal designation in 2019. It’s become our state’s newest wine country, with seven wineries adding to a statewide total that now tops 200. The area has long been known for agriculture, with the apple crop consistently ranking among the top 20 in the nation. Conditions that make Hendersonville a prime apple location — warm days and cool nights paired with the right soil composition and humidity — also work well for growing grapes. When they opened Stone Ashe Vineyards in 2020, owners Craig and Tina Little wanted to replicate the winery experience of Bordeaux, France, with steep slopes, a moderate climate and comparable soil conditions. They found their perfect terroir on a 2,700-foot mountain just outside Hendersonville. Vines were cloned from legacy vines in France and carefully planted by the Littles.

86 • QCEXCLUSIVE.COM

“The idea was to take clones that were used to the same climate in which they had grown for a thousand years in Bordeaux and put them in a similar climate here,” Craig Little says. “We want to educate people on North Carolina wines, showing we can grow quality grapes here for remarkable wine that’s on par with other regions.” Across the Crest of the Blue Ridge, vineyards produce highquality classic wines from European vinifera and FrenchAmerican hybrid grapes, including Cabernet Franc, Cabernet Sauvignon, Chardonnay, Merlot, Petit Verdot, Riesling and Vidal Blanc. Hendersonville’s newest winery, Souther Williams, has reached deeper into the European continent with varietals such as Blaufränkisch, Gruner Veltliner, Regent and Saperavi. A N EW A DV EN T U R E Explore mountain living at The Cliffs. words LIZA CARRASQUILLO

There’s always been something irresistibly inviting about the Carolina mountains. The sprawling forests and sidewinding trails are perfect for those ready to explore, while the crisp, clean air and still atmosphere are just right for those seeking relaxation. Add in a few gorgeous sunrises and stunning cliffside views, and the Carolina mountains have a recipe that just keeps people coming back for more. But for some, a few weekends a year just isn’t satisfactory. The Carolina mountains offer enough exploration opportunities to last a lifetime. That’s why The Cliffs living communities are helping people take full advantage of everything

that the mountains have to offer. Club members can create a permanent residence or new vacation home in one of seven communities dispersed throughout the Asheville region, the Mountain region, or the Keowee Lake region. The Asheville region takes full advantage of the nearby city, encouraging club members to explore its streets just as they would the mountains. There, members will find a bustling arts and music scene, as well as a variety of culinary destinations they won’t want to miss. Back at The Cliffs, members can find all sorts of amenities, including clay tennis courts and an 18,000-square-foot wellness center.

TR AVEL Continuing south, prospective club members will run into the mountain region located right around Hendersonville, NC; Flat Rock, NC; and Greenville, SC. The Cliffs communities here are nestled along the mountain valley, surrounded by towering waterfalls and scenic trails. They’re also just a short drive away from one of the area’s premier culinary destinations, Hotel Domestique. This boutique hotel was designed by Tour de France cyclist George Hincapie as a respite for adventurers looking to fish, golf, hike, and of course cycle along the nearby trails. As a frequent favorite among club members, Hotel Domestique is always ready to welcome newcomers to the community. For those interested in a different kind of mountain atmosphere, The Cliffs has just the place. In upstate South Carolina lies the Keowee Lake region, known for its 300 miles of shimmering shoreline. This serene lake is not only an excellent destination for those looking to relax on their own personal beach, but also for boaters and fishers looking to have fun out on the water. Plus, the lake is near a variety of state parks, including Table Rock, Toxaway and Oconee. Those who don’t want to travel too far can simply enjoy the 20mile stretch of waterfalls and trails included on The Cliffs community land. Excited about living by the lake but don’t want to pass up the chance to experience the other regions? Don’t worry —

Corporate Outings Special Events

The Cliffs take pride in keeping all of their communities as connected as possible. Those living in one area can always visit another and use whatever amenities they’d like. With three regions and seven communities to choose from, as well as options to build or buy, The Cliffs makes it as easy as possible for prospective members to find their dream home in their dream destination. A PASSION FOR T R AV EL Take a global getaway with the help of Jessica Drew and SmartFlyer. words ELEANOR MERRELL

After two years of being cooped up in our homes, in our neighborhoods, in our states — heck, even within our borders — many of us are itching for a global getaway. Enter: Jessica Drew Travel, a full-service travel agency. Jessica Drew Travel, owned by Jessica Drew Palles, is a Charlotte-based affiliate of SmartFlyer. Jessica herself has always had a passion for travel. This, combined with her impulse to plan and her talent for organization, positioned her perfectly to become a travel agent. In 2021, she joined SmartFlyer as an affiliate, which enables her to access a partner network of accommodation providers, book private avia-

Jessica is able to assist clients with travel plans across the globe. However, she is most knowledgeable in the Lowcountry, southeastern United States, Caribbean, Mexico, and Europe. “I lived in London and Italy for a bit in my mid-20s, and I’m always ready to go back!” says Jessica. If ever there was a time during the 21st century when a travel agent is an indispensable addition to any trip, it’s now. With entry and quarantine requirements evolving daily and

morphing unpredictably from one country to the next, it’s all too easy to arrive somewhere new only to discover that entry rules have changed or your paperwork is lacking. Hiccups have always been a part of travel. They are part of the experience. But they shouldn’t be the entire experience. “In the event that something goes awry, I’m the first point of contact, rather than a general phone number,” explains Jessica. “I work with each client directly and am able to provide support until they return home.”

TR AVEL Jessica’s work actually begins even before wheels leave the tarmac. She first hosts a consultation call with clients, during which she learns about their vision for their trip and their travel preferences. Then, she researches. She puts together possible itineraries and investigates SmartFlyer partnerships and perks that fit the client’s preferences and have the potential to elevate the vacation. She works with clients to tweak itineraries until they align with or surpass the client’s vision. After finalizing the itinerary, she aids with concierge requests, such as dining and spa reservations. “The number one benefit to booking a trip with me is that a client isn’t spending their time researching destinations, accommodations or any other aspect of their trip. That’s my job! Time is precious, and how we spend it matters,” says Jessica. At the end of the experience, clients have saved time, gained access to exclusive perks and partnerships, enjoyed a seamless experience, and made memories that can last a lifetime.

options catered to what your stay needs, whether it be beautiful beds to comfort you after a day of exploring the outdoors, or a spa-like casita made for a day of lounging around and relaxing. Speaking of spas, Enchantment Resort offers a full-service spa with caring and intuitive therapists who will provide you with massages, body treatments, skin care service, and more. The resort prides itself on being a hotel centered around wellbeing and finding your inner peace, so beyond the spa they offer wellness activities such as yoga, meditation, and other mindfulness programs. Enchantment is not like other spa resorts, because they offer one-of-a-kind experiences that are inspired by the Arizona region, all designed to bring you closer to nature and yourself. These experiences include chakra balancing presentations, learning to channel the energy of the Sedona vortex, zen art, and prayer arrow creation. Sedona is known across the world for being a center of spiritual awakening and healing, so what better way to explore this than at Enchantment Resort, a place that embraces this energy and implements it into your stay! If it is adventure you are looking for, Enchantment Resort has everything you could want, including mountain biking, hiking, guided area tours, tennis, pickleball, and golf. The resort is also a short two hour drive from the infamous Grand Canyon National Park, so be sure to ask the concierge for tips and information about day tours, which they will be more than happy to provide. After a day of activity and exploration, you can take a nighttime stroll under the expansive sky and gaze at the stars or huddle around the outdoor fire pit with a group of new friends. The regional Native American influence does not stop with the architecture of this resort, because it can also be found in the dining experiences of Che Ah Chi, the in-house restaurant. Here, Southwest and modern American cuisine combine, with dishes all catered around local produce and paired with an award-winning wine selection. Try a signature hand-crafted cocktail while sitting back and enjoying the panoramic view of the Boynton Canyon, or indulge in not one but two different dessert menus. For breakfast, be sure to check out the restaurant cafe that offers fresh-pressed juices, smoothies, and more hearty options. Enchantment Resort offers a variety of packages so your visit will be one to remember. Find yourself in awe of the scenery and service while grounding yourself and becoming one with nature again. You can find out more about the Sedona hillside through mountain biking and tours, or you can find out more about yourself with guided meditations and art. I

In traveling The Carolinas for work and not just pleasure over the last several years, I’ve had the opportunity to stay in just about every type of lodging the states have to offer: rustic mountain retreats, oceanside resorts, tiny boutique hotels, small town B&Bs, and even a spare campground or two. To be able to best explore the cities, towns, and natural landscapes, it’s incumbent that I can find somewhere to call home for the night which has given me the excuse to try out more of these places than I could imagine having done otherwise. Armed with that experience, I feel confident we have just the right type of place for you to unwind, relax, and return back to each evening, no matter what travel experience it is you’re seeking. From the best known cities of our two states to the tiniest hidden gems, we’ve got a place for you to lay your head down at night.

NORTH CAROLINA — The Inn on Biltmore Estate The Inn has a gorgeous, châteauesque-style based on the French Renaissance architecture of the estate itself. Enjoy the same luxury that has made the estate famous for centuries: Beyond the spa and wine options, you’ll also be able to take in the unique scenery of the Blue Ridge. During your stay, take a tour of the masterfully designed gardens or even take falconry lessons. biltmore.com The Greystone Inn The Greystone Inn is the perfect spot for adventurers who don’t want to sacrifice luxury. Located in Asheville, guests can explore nearby waterfalls or book the inn’s private boat tour of the lake. The inn also sells takeaway picnics for guests who want to find their own scenic lunch spot. With calming views and adventures all around, the Inn provides relaxation without boredom. greystoneinn.com

Grand Bohemian Asheville The Grand Bohemian Asheville takes a different route to luxury mountain vacations. While most mountain resorts will place you in nature, the Grand Bohemian elevates you above it. The hotel celebrates the beauty of the great outdoors through its rustic yet modern architecture. Even if you’re not staying there, it’s worth the visit for its eclectic art gallery. kesslercollection.com Old Edwards Inn and Spa Located on the southern plateau of the Blue Ridge Mountains, Old Edwards Inn and Spa guests can stay in one of the lodge’s

beautifully furnished suites or a luxurious cabin. Grab a drink at the Inn’s rooftop terrace bar and take in the serene mountain views, or hike to one of the nearby waterfalls. The nearby shops of historic downtown Highlands are also worth visiting during your stay. oldedwardshospitality.com Chetola Resort Chetola Resort is the most family-oriented option on this list. While it provides romantic scenery and relaxing activities for couples, everyone will find something to do here. Kids can enjoy the resort’s paddle boats and pickle ball courts, and the older folks can test their aim at the resort’s archery and gun ranges. Outside the resorts, guests can explore the village of Blowing Rock or take a hike through the nearby mountain range. chetola.com The Swag The Swag is a spectacular balance of luxury and rusticity. The entire property sits atop a mountain and has a variety of unique lodging options. While on the property, guests can take a stroll through the seasonal garden or go for a chilling swim in the pond. If guests want to venture away from their cabin, they can explore the nearby mountains through the Swag’s exclusive entrance into Great Smoky Mountains National Park. theswag.com The Foundry The Foundry is a unique retreat located in the heart of Asheville. The historic building was originally used as a steel factory, and though the hotel has since been renovated and refined, it maintains many important elements of its industrial origins.

We’re partial, we know, but there is something so special about the Carolinas. That’s due to many things: The food culture, the interesting junction of “north” and “south”, the rich heritage and the people… but it’s really the diversity of this landscape that gets us. The sweeping mountains of western North Carolina, the breezy, tropical-looking stretches of the South Carolina coast, the huge sand dunes that line the Outer Banks, the dense Blue Ridge, the ever-evolving urban areas... Drive three hours one way and then three hours the other, and you’ll quickly see for yourself. While we love to travel across the U.S. and beyond, traveling our own backyard is the opposite of routine, and that’s what makes the Carolinas our favorite type of homebase. From the beaches to the mountains, here are the places that inspire us, that call our names again and again, that surprise us just when we thought we knew it well. These are our favorite Carolina destinations to visit in 2022.

THE NORTH CAROLINA BEACHES — Wrightsville Beach Grab a coffee at The Workshop and begin your stroll down Wrightsville Beach to catch the sunrise off the pier. After a long day of basking in the sun, stop by local favorite Tower 7 for authentic Mexican tacos, irresistible guacamole, and cold, madein-house margaritas. Jockey's Ridge Walk through the sandy dunes at this state park in the Outer Banks. Afterwards, visit Outer Banks Distilling for what many guests agree is the best rum they’ve ever tasted, and perhaps partake in the history that Cape Hatteras Lighthouse has to offer as well.

Duck Beach Stroll the white sands along the shore of Duck. As a popular shelling destination, Duck offers a scenic yet quiet beach retreat full of treasures and memories to take home. Corolla Stop at one of the nearby gas stations to deflate your tires before cruising the spacious 4 x 4 beaches of Corolla. The descendents of the Colonial Spanish Mustangs have free range of the beaches, and can be spotted on your drive or walk through the sandy slopes. You can also book a tour to see the horses up close.

Crystal Coast And Cape Lookout National Seashore This pristine region known as the Southern Outer Banks has so many things to see and do from the Cape Lookout Lighthouse to seeing the horses on Shackleford Banks. The Lighthouses of OBX There are five beautiful lighthouses to see when visiting the Outer Banks and three that you can climb to the top of including Currituck Beach, Bodie Island, and Cape Hatteras. THE LOWCOUNTRY — Pawleys Island Pier Lay back at this fishing pier located in Pawleys Island, South Carolina. Pawleys is known for encouraging a lifestyle of ease, free of both your worries and shoes. Crabbing in nearby creeks, fishing, sharing ghost-stories about rumored hauntings, hammock lounging, and enjoying the beach are all everyday activities at this haven of a destination. Shem Creek Shem Creek is a great place to visit when in Charleston, SC. The boardwalk has stunning views of the coastal marsh as well as the Ravenel Bridge, and if you like boating, Shem Creek gives you access to Charleston Harbor and after that, the Atlantic Ocean. It's also a great place to paddleboard or grab a snack and beverage at one of several renowned establishments.

Looking Glass Rock The six mile round trip hike to the top of this natural rock spectacle near Pisgah National Forest is worth it. The views of the Parkway above and the foothills in the distance are breathtaking. Grandfather Mountain Hike the diverse terrain of Grandfather Mountain including the step-by-step wooden ladders framing its steep rock sheers and arrive atop Calloway Peak, the highest of the four peaks. LAKES OF THE CAROLINAS — Lake Tahoma Nestled between the mountains of Western North Carolina, experience the peaceful, private views of Mt. Mitchell from the shores of the beautiful, still-watered Lake Tahoma.
