NOTE

No. 83 I've always been a big believer that your surroundings play a huge part in both your mental and physical states. Your surroundings can impact your attitude, effectiveness, creativity, stress and energy; even things like your Vitamin D levels. For example, a beautiful bright space can be a great place to start your day or get a workout in, while a dark, quiet space with a comfortable couch can only add to the experience of listening to a quiet record or sipping on a good bourbon. I've always prioritized design in both my home and work spaces and feel the right decor choices and ambiance for your personal style can make all the difference. However, pinpointing your personal style and finding purveyors, builders, and designers who can really bring that style to life is hard to do. So, every year, in our annual Home Issue, we try to help you out by showcasing some of our favorite spaces by Charlotte's top talent. In this issue, we showcase over 35 designers, builders, and diverse spaces to help inspire you in your quest to curate an environment you'll love. Along with all the home and design content, we also visit Arcadia Art Consultancy, meet artist Charlotte Foust, dine at the Trolley Barn, make libations at The Cocktailery, tour Charleston's Peninsula, visit High Point, and relax at a new Carolina destination: The Loutrel. If you love design, and in particular, beautifully executed spaces, then this is the issue for you. Hope you enjoy and until next issue—our 2022 Travel Issue—take care! Sincerely, Jon-Paul Grice, Art Director Brett Barter, Publisher

K

Kaitlyn McElwee is the founder and managing director of Arcadia Art Consultancy, which offers bespoke advisory and appraisal services to both private and corporate collectors. As their clients build and manage collections of fine art, jewelry, and other luxury assets, Arcadia Art Consultancy offers trusted support. "I started AAC because I saw a need to provide collectors with trusted guidance, so they may curate a thoughtful collection that not only speaks to their aesthetics and art historical interests but does so from a financial mindset," says McElwee. Although the professionals at Arcadia Art Consultancy are crossover specialists, capable of providing consulting services related to a wide array of luxury assets, the core of their business is modern, post-war, and contemporary art. Arcadia Art Consultancy is available to help clients in three primary ways: appraisal reporting, collection management, and advisory services. The advisory services exist for clients who seek to develop collections that not only match their aesthetic preferences but also further their investment strategy. AAC helps clients source artwork through the primary and secondary markets

32 • QCEXCLUSIVE.COM

via auction houses, galleries, and private sales. As an impartial third party, AAC draws from its vast network of resources to ensure that its clients identify the right works for the right price at the right time. As many art collectors will attest, the art market is notoriously complex and opaque. It can be challenging to anticipate what acquisitions are sound investments due to issues of authenticity, title, art historical significance, or market trends. It doesn't matter whether the collector is experienced or novice, an unbiased, knowledgeable professional can provide insight and steer clients away from costly mistakes. In addition to its advisory services, AAC provides written appraisal reports for a wide variety of needs, including art lending, equitable distribution, estate planning, insurance coverage, and non-cash charitable contributions. If collection management services are what's needed, AAC partners with a network of art lenders, conservators, framers, installers, storage facilities, and shippers so they can respond to any need a collector may have swiftly and smoothly.

“I started AAC because I saw a need to provide collectors with trusted guidance, so they may curate a thoughtful collection that not only speaks to their personal aesthetics and art historical interests, but does so from a financial mindset.”

McElwee and her team regularly work with high-end, notable collections. Although the Arcadia Art Consultancy office is based in Charlotte, their clientele lives throughout the United States. No matter who they are serving, Arcadia Art Consultancy will take a holistic approach. "Our goal is to make sure that we do right by our client in both the short and long term," says McElwee. This ethos is what has allowed AAC to help clients curate truly meaningful collections, and ones with true investment potential, if that's among the client's goals. McElwee has a master's degree in art history/fine art administration and years of experience within the art world. She is engaged in ongoing academic pursuits (exploring the intersection of fine art, finance, and the law), is an active member of the International Society of Appraisers, and serves as Chair for "Coined in the South: 2022," a juried art biennial at The Mint Museum, on view from March 25th through July 3rd. Her team offers a similarly robust list of qualifications that they apply in the service of their loyal clients, which has already earned AAC five years of successful business and many more to come. info arcadiaartconsultancy.com @arcadiaartconsultancy

ACTION A N D GEST U R E In the studio with Charlotte artist Charlotte Foust. words ELEANOR MERRELL

Step into Charlotte Foust’s studio while she’s at work and you’ll be pressed to tiptoe around open paint tubes and scattered paint brushes. Multiple canvases line the wall and rest atop easels in various states of completion. Foust is an abstract painter. Her process is intuitive and spontaneous, just like her studio space. Her work begins with a drawing tool—a pencil, charcoal, or marker—which she uses to create the framework of a piece, meandering

lines that blossom into pops of color. She works on multiple canvases simultaneously, trusting in her creative process to take the work where it needs to go. Art has been a constant for Foust since her childhood, which she spent in Charlotte. She earned her Bachelor’s in Art from UNCC and then immediately launched her artistic career, working from a small gallery/studio space in NoDa for years.

CULTURE

“When you are creating art from an internal space, everything inspires you.”

Since then, Foust has exhibited her work across the nation, from New Mexico to New York. Her paintings are included in collections at Iberia Bank, Duke Energy, and Publications International. She has received grants from the Arts and Science Council and residencies at the McColl Center. The driver of all this success is of course Foust’s artistic inspiration, which she draws from the Abstract Expressionist painters of the 1950s. “If I ever get lost in a painting and can’t figure

38 • QCEXCLUSIVE.COM

out the next step, I usually pull out the old art books. Diebenkorn, Mitchell, De Kooning—they always inspire me to pick up that brush and keep on painting.” Foust has that gift peculiar to artists of being able to find inspiration anywhere — in fellow artists, in life, in sensory experiences, and in nature. “When you are creating art from an internal space, everything inspires you. I filter daily life and find inspiration everywhere,” says Foust.

It’s not enough to just be inspired, though. Foust stresses the importance of showing up everyday, as well as remaining open to new ideas. “Abstract Expressionism always seems so full of life and I love that tangible feel of action and gesture,” says Foust. It’s the kind of thing that can’t flourish in stagnation, so Foust stays on the move, ever-broadening her internal landscapes and artistic techniques. “I don’t think I will ever stop creating art; it’s such a joy in my life and a part of who I am. So, I will always, as long as I’m able, be painting.” info charlottefoust.com / @fouststudio

CONCR ET E CR E ATIONS Artist Shamila Varner takes an unlikely material and elevates it into eclectic home decor. words SUNNY HUBLER

Shamila Varner has turned a unique type of handmade artistry into her fully family-run business: concrete home decor under the name Queen City Crete. From planters to candle holders, jewelry trays and hanging art, every single one of Shamila’s products is handmade with love in Charlotte with the assistance of Shamila’s husband and sometimes even their children. “I started making candles because I was tired of spending

money on candles that weren’t even good,” Shamila explains. “Then I quickly expanded to planters and homewares once I got concrete down.” It’s a further bonus that the concrete is a renewable resource, and one that Shamila enjoys changing the perception around: Concrete isn’t just for sidewalks or cinder blocks. It can be beautiful, too. Shamila’s designs are eclectic, clean, and often modern or mid-century modern.

CULTURE

“Concrete is so versatile, which is what I love about it.”

What did life look like for you before starting Queen City Crete? We lived the 9-5 life, and I missed a lot of time with my babies while they were growing up. How did you apply the skills you learned from your previous jobs to this business? I have a background in sales and retail so I apply that daily to business. Also, I learned about social media marketing with a previous job and it helped grow our business tremendously. Why did you choose to use concrete instead of any other material?

46 • QCEXCLUSIVE.COM

I chose concrete because when I started making candles, I was very bored with the vessels I was pouring in; everyone had them. My husband and I were working on a fire pit for our back yard using concrete, and I just had an idea that maybe that could work for candles. It wasn’t really popular when I started in late 2018 so the only way to know was trial and error. I made molds with recycled juice boxes and that’s when our business was born. Do you mix the concrete yourself? When I started it was just me; our business is female-founded and family-run now! It grew so much and so fast that my husband left his full-time job in mid 2020 to help me. Now it’s our family business.

LOVE TRAVELING THE CAROLINAS? Your guide to North and South Carolina from the Blue Ridge to the Lowcountry.

How do you come up with the names of your planters? Most are named after family members and influential people. For instance, I have three named after our children, two named after our family pets, and some are influential women like our Joan vessel, named after Joan of Arc. What does the process of coming up with designs look like? We are often inspired by nature. A lot of our layered vessels are inspired by the sunset the night before or the sunrise that day, or art we see around us. We don’t sit down and plan it out. It’s also heavily influenced by music we listen to. What new designs can we expect? We would love to expand into lighting fixtures and more furniture this year! Terrazzo tables have always been something I’m drawn to. What plans do you have for the future of Queen City Crete? We have a 5-year plan that incorporates both of my passions. I’m not ready to let the cat out of the bag yet but expect big things from us!

Discover the driving force behind Khali Yoga and what’s made it such a beloved studio in the NoDa area. words LIZA CARRASQUILLO

Yoga has been a part of Lindsey Crisp’s life ever since she was a teen. A prolific high school athlete, Crisp had always felt the need to channel her near limitless energy into some sort of movement. When her mother took her to her first yoga class, she realized that sports weren’t the only outlet she could enjoy. In fact, yoga gave her something that traditional sports did not—a chance to slow down and focus on centering herself. “Growing up playing sports, I found myself drawn to the physical aspects of yoga,” recalls Crisp. “Yoga gave me a way to burn off energy while also teaching me how to breathe, listen to my body, and build a connection to my inner world.” That connection became more and more important to Crisp, until one day she noticed that she’d centered her career around yoga without even realizing it.

50 • QCEXCLUSIVE.COM

photos JAMEY PRICE

“I don’t really remember a moment that I decided to make yoga my career focus. I guess it happened over time—I just kept showing up to do what I loved.” Crisp could’ve kept working at various studios for the rest of her career, but one aspect of teaching yoga always felt like an obstacle to her—the kind she could only overcome by owning her own studio. “Finding full-time employment within the yoga world proved to be an unsuccessful pursuit for me,” says Crisp. “It was commonplace to hear teachers talk about their ‘real jobs’ when referring to what they did outside of their two to three yoga classes a week. I wanted yoga to be my real job.” To make that happen, she had to tackle the gig culture model of yoga employment head-on. Opening Khali Yoga allowed her to do just that.

“Yoga gave me a way to burn off energy while also teaching me how to breathe, listen to my body, and build a connection to my inner world.”

CULTURE

“I knew it was possible to have a successful studio that provided full-time work, a living salary and paid time off—yoga as a profession.” Turns out, plenty of others were looking for a way to teach yoga full-time, too. After holding her first classes at her new studio in NoDa, Crisp quickly discovered an eager community willing to support her. Now, as one of the neighborhood’s premier yoga studios, Crisp has worked hard to keep her classes affordable and welcoming for those of all skill levels. “We have the best priced yoga in Charlotte, in the best facility, with the best teachers,” says Crisp with pride. She’s even been able to expand her business by combining her love of houseplants with her love of yoga. Anyone looking to get into plants can buy select types through the studio and even take a houseplant 101 class. Those interested in trying out a plant care or yoga class can sign up online or through the studio’s scheduling app. With Crisp leading the way, the Khali Yoga community will always be ready to welcome newcomers. info khaliyogacenter.com @khaliyoga

In 2015, Phil Buchy and Newton Craver launched Legion Brewing in the Brodt’s Music building in Plaza Midwood, among neighbors like Common Market, Undercurrent Coffee, and Moxie Mercantile. Within just a few years, the brewery catapulted to success, opening a second taproom in 2018 and a huge brewing facility in 2021 to keep up with the ever-growing demand for its popular Juicy Jay brew. Now, the Legion team is bringing a new concept to the Queen City: Trolley Barn. Trolley Barn, located next to the Rail Trail at Atherton Mill, is a fermentory and food hall intended to give the Legion team a place to innovate and experiment. “Fermentory, to us, has a double meaning,” explains Trolley Barn owner Phil Buchy. “Yes, we are making beer here, ferment-

56 • QCEXCLUSIVE.COM

ing it right on site, but the concept is also a nod to fermenting our ideas. Ideas can be developed, tested, and allowed to grow at the Trolley Barn. We can throw the rule book out the window.” The Trolley Barn taps pull from serving tanks suspended above the bar, built into the center of the building. Visitors can sample an array of distinct, small batch beers, from hazy IPAs to blondes, porters, and stouts brewed by James Rutledge using cutting edge techniques and ingredients. In addition to beer, Trolley Barn libations include an assortment of cocktails, including classics like old fashioneds and mules, as well as creative signatures like The Dragon (gin, blackberry, lemon, mint). In the spirit of experimentation, both the beer and cocktail menus will change regularly.

FOOD & DRINK Come for the Drinks, Stay for the Food — Trolley Barn also has three food stalls, each serving its own distinct food under individual brands, but all headed by award-winning chef Gene Briggs. Briggs may be a familiar name to anyone who has sampled Legion food in the past three years or who ate at Uptown’s Blue Restaurant and Bar during the nearly 20 years when he served as executive chef. “We hired Chef Gene because we wanted our food program to go beyond what people typically expect for brewery food,” says Buchy. “We want to be as known for our food as our beers, and Chef Gene helps us do just that.” The Brand and Steel food stall specializes in wood-grilled meats and seafood, dishing out delicacies like oxtail marmalade and Brazilian steak. On the opposite end of the food spectrum, Greenworks serves elevated salads and bowls. The third food stall, Daily Shift Food Co. offers a wide selection of handhelds like pork belly gyros, philly cheesesteaks, and bacon burgers. Patrons can order any of the three food stalls’ food from their seats.

An Homage to the Past — As much stock as Trolley Barn places in the new and now, it still pays respect to the historical innovations that paved the way for present ones. Inside, guests will find machinery common in warehouses (like trolley barns) from the early 20th century, as well as flourishes of art nouveau scattered around an airy, two-story floor plan. “We love how much South End has grown and what the neighborhood has become, but we want to make sure we’re acknowledging the area’s history in everything we do at Trolley Barn,” says Buchy. Trolley Barn strikes the balance of upscale and high quality with welcoming and comfortable, acknowledging what has come before and striking out in pursuit of what comes next.

How The Cocktailery, new in Charlotte’s South End, came to be.

words SUNNY HUBLER & LORENZ A MEDLE Y photos JAMEY PRICE

In 2016, the idea for The Cocktailery, a go-to shop in South End for cocktail aficionados, was formed. Tamu Curtis built a reputation enriching and promoting some of the most prestigious brands in the world before bringing her talents to Charlotte. What is now The Cocktailery first grew as a concept from Liberate Your Palate, Curtis’ original business that she created in 2015. Curtis is a self-described “lover of a good cocktail party,” so it makes perfect sense that LYP was a way for Tamu to provide cocktail-centric events like classes, catering, and tours all over Charlotte and Charleston. The venture was popular enough for Curtis to expand her business and vision in 2021 with a brick-and-mortar. The Cocktailery, at Atherton Mill, is a one-of-a-kind cocktail supply and beverage lifestyle shop designed for the craft cocktail enthusiast. The shop carries an assortment of quality barware and accessories and offers hands-on cocktail classes designed to enhance your ability to create delicious cocktails on your own. “[Cocktail-making] should be lighthearted and there should always be a little “wow” factor; these are all things I hope that The Cocktailery encapsulates,” Tamu said.

60 • QCEXCLUSIVE.COM

The modern, colorful space perfectly captures the lightheartedness and togetherness that Curtis wants her guests to feel during the cocktail classes: There’s a bitters tasting bar, sitting lounge and a cocktail studio, with interior design led by Ariene Bethea of Dress My Room Interiors and creative design by Studio Cultivate. Curtis chose South End because of the central location. “Atherton Mill has some amazing shops and restaurants that complement The Cocktailery, which makes taking a class part of a night on the town,” she said. According to Curtis, The Cocktailery was made with the intention of creating an inclusive environment and an experience where everyone in the community feels comfortable and welcome. It’s a beautiful outgrowth of the lessons we all learned in 2020. “[Attendees] are intentionally gathering for the same social experience, therefore the energy is always fun, and I love seeing people that may not necessarily acknowledge one another in a different environment walk out at the end of the class with a possible new friend.”

FOOD & DRINK

In their cocktail classes, everyone of all skill levels and ages can learn the art of cocktail making. “Cocktails are social, entertaining is social, hospitality is social, and I want everyone to feel that when they walk through our doors,” she said. “You see people from all over Charlotte and it’s surrounding areas, from different backgrounds and races,” Curtis said. During the height of the pandemic, when many businesses switched to online, Curtis was uncertain of how to successfully conduct online classes because it would lack the same interactive, hands-on and social experience of inperson classes. In April 2020, Curtis figured out how to execute virtual classes. “We ship the ingredients and the bar tools to each individual participant and that has really been the key to the success I’ve had in the virtual space,” she said. Curtis currently works with many small businesses in the Charlotte area and nationwide who get her accessories and products. Check out the website and organize a fun date night, friend outing, or even a team-building group class. You can book private or join one of the weekly evening classes. info thecocktailery.com / @thecocktailery

This is an ode to a Charlotte classic: King’s Kitchen finally reopened a few months ago after being closed during the pandemic. The team is thrilled to be back and the community is equally thrilled to keep supporting their mission… and enjoying the famous fried chicken sandwich, of course. Perfected over the years, this classic plate comes with perfectly crisp Joyce Farms chicken as the star. As the first and only 100% vegan restaurant in the area, Oh My Soul holds a special place in the heart of NoDa. The restaurant’s dedication to cruelty-free food, tasty South African flavors and bold drinks have attracted patrons of all kinds. The Jade Enchantress is just one example of the cocktails that keep locals coming back for more. This drink, made with Mezcal and Conniption Navy Strength

Gin, knows how to pack a punch. The elderflower liqueur, rose lemonade and yellow chartreuse ground the drink’s base spirits with floral and herbal notes that keep it from feeling overwhelming. They add some lime and cucumber juice for a little zest, then top it off with rosebuds and juniper berries. The finished result is a cocktail that’s as enchanting to look at as it is to drink.

Mariposa is all about fostering a space where friends can renew their connections and forge new ones. It’s about fusing cuisine and traditions from across the globe to create something as beautiful as it is delicious. Mariposa’s drink menu is no exception. Their Regatta Colada, for example, foregoes the classic pineapple and coconut pairing for something a little softer. Instead of the tart pineapple, Mariposa pairs their coconut rum with passion fruit and Appleton rum, giving the drink a bit of a smoother profile. The fresh lime still provides those acidic notes, while the Orgeat syrup brings in that milky texture one can expect from a colada—but with a slightly nuttier taste. Anyone ordering the Regatta Colada likely won’t be able to resist ordering another round—or even just a second for a friend. — info — mariposaclt.com / @mariposaatthemint

WHAT COMES NEXT FOR HOUSE OF NOM A D As House of Nomad celebrates five years in business, we take a look at the renowned design firm’s impressive past and potential future. words LIZA CARRASQUILLO photos LAURA SUMRAK and MELISSA VELASQUEZ

Every design firm needs a core style that sets it apart from others—a sense of self that makes its work both recognizable and desirable. While some firms take years to find a balance between accentuating a client’s choices and showcasing their own look, others seem to know just what they want to be known for from the very beginning. House of Nomad has always been the latter instead of the former. For the past five years, founders Berkeley Minkhorst and Kelley Lentini have been serving clients throughout the Southeast, all while maintaining their iconic modern and travel-centric identity. Born from the idea that travel fosters creativity, Minkhorst and Lentini wanted to design styles that felt global and drew on their own experiences in other countries. By sourcing textiles, furniture, art, and décor from their various trips abroad, the duo has been able to create designs that look unlike any others throughout the Charlotte area and beyond.

74 • QCEXCLUSIVE.COM

“Over the years, we’ve really honed in on our signature HON style, which is a modern-global take on interior design…” note the designers. “Additionally, we have sourced more vintage pieces than ever before which, when blended with modern decor and furniture, allows a space to really transcend eras.” That signature HON style, complete with layered textures and stunning patterns, can be found in all kinds of spaces, from eclectic bedrooms and modern offices to local bars and coworking buildings. As House of Nomad continues to work with families and businesses in Charlotte, the design firm also continues to look toward a bright future. “It’s crazy to think how big our team has grown in comparison to when we first started,” recalls Minkhorst and Lentini. “We’ve learned to shift priorities, think bigger picture and let go of juggling every little thing.”

“We have sourced more vintage pieces than ever before which, when blended with modern decor and furniture, allows a space to really transcend eras.” Minkhorst and Lentini have already made moves to expand their reach. In 2019, they opened their first flagship store in the middle of Charlotte, NC, and in October of 2020, they opened a second store in Charleston, SC. Now, they are moving their Charlotte design studio and shop into a brand new, combined space in SouthPark, projected to open in fall of 2022. These stores not only serve as hubs for potential clients to learn about their services, but also as places for Minkhorst and Lentini to sell one-of-a-kind items sourced through partnerships with artisans from abroad. They’re now currently partnered with artisans in over 20 countries, and they’ve expanded their teams to match the workload. “Now, we have an incredibly talented team of 18 that continues to grow!” says the duo. “We have added a marketing department, an operations and sales team for the shops, several design assistants and full-time installers.”

With their unique sense of style and determination to bring authenticity to every space they design, the demand for House of Nomad’s designers likely isn’t going away anytime soon. In fact, their recent partnership with clothing and home décor store Anthropologie shows just how far they’re going, as the duo is selling their own HONdesigned wallpaper and textile collection through the major, national brand collaboration. This growth and recognition puts them in an excellent position to keep doing what they do best as they usher in another five years of exciting expansion and success. info houseofnomaddesign.com shophouseofnomad.com @shophouseofnomaddesign @houseofnomaddesign

HOME & DESIGN

Did you always have the ‘romantic’ aspect in mind when designing in this transitional style? I didn’t know my style would be called “Romantic Transitional”...I realized that all of my spaces were transitional, meaning the foundation pieces were timeless and neutral with clean lines, but each space also had a softness to it—something that felt inviting, cozy and well, romantic. Not in a frilly way, but more of an expression of love and appreciation for the people who lived in those spaces. It allowed them to tell their story with family photos, character pieces and special touches that made that space feel like “home.” So, we named the look and kept running with it, and it’s been working for us and our clients ever since! What is your process like with clients? We are a very process driven company. It all starts with a discovery call where our potential clients will complete a questionnaire and schedule a 30-minute call with me. I’ll dig deeper into their project goals, and if it sounds like a great fit for both parties, we move to the design consultation where we review estimates and project scope. Then, we head into the project kickoff meeting to get it all started. We spend about 6-8 weeks creating a design concept, then a design plan. Once that’s approved, we order all the furnishings, accessories and décor to bring our design to life. Before you know it, we’re at install day, which often plays out like those design TV shows with a full surprise reveal and sometimes even happy tears! When did you know you wanted to get into interior design? When I got my own place after college. I’m from a very small town, and I never knew of a single person who had someone else decorate their home—let alone design it—until I was well into my

82 • QCEXCLUSIVE.COM

twenties. But I always loved décor and floor planning—my mom and I would change the furniture layout all the time when I was a kid. I just didn’t know that was something I could ever get paid to do for others! Tell us about why you offer mentoring as an important component of your business? I started coaching and mentoring in 2020 and it’s been so rewarding. I have a Master’s Degree in Education and when I get to blend my design and teaching world, I really light up! I love sharing what I’ve learned with other designers so they can skip many of the mistakes I made, but also because I believe in the power of positive energy and community, especially among women. I was lucky enough to have great mentors available to me on my journey and it made all the difference for me. If I can help level up the industry by sharing lessons and experiences with other designers while also pulling back the curtain to my best strategies, that’s a win in my book! Are there any design dreams/goals you have? I strive for a successful work/life balance so that my children can have a mother that they admire for her drive and work ethic, but also a mother they snuggle with at the end of the day…I am highly involved in their lives while also running a successful design business—yes, women can do both. I want to be a role model for my children and a great partner to my husband as we take this life journey together, and that’s what keeps me going every day! info saralynnbrennan.com @saralynnbrennan

With this Myers Park home, designer Amy Vermillion and her team did a full overhaul, and essentially furnished and designed the entire home. This beautiful sitting room/library is no exception. “With all of our clients, we do a furniture inventory of their existing pieces and then create space plans so the clients can see how they work in their new home,” Amy explains. “All the new furnishings are done in a slightly modern aesthetic. The upholstery is all very comfortable and we chose fabrics that are

family friendly but look great.” In this room, as with the others throughout the home, Amy used fabrics that look luxurious but have built-in stain resistance. “There is no point having decorative elements that won’t hold up with kiddos! My whole goal with families with young children is to make selections that make sense.” The result is a livable, stylish room that allows for the owners’ many books to be on display.

Just about an hour away from both Raleigh and Charlotte lies the charming city of High Point, NC. The abundance of timber in the area and the ease of transportation provided by Southern Railway gave High Point the monniker “Home Furnishings Capital of the World.” The rich textile history is not the only attraction in High Point today, however: Visiting this tight-knit community is a fun way to enjoy our state’s diverse offerings. The Main Attraction — Every April and October the city of High Point hosts the famous High Point Market, also known as the largest furnishing trade show in the world. Every six months, the trade show ushers in more than 75,000 people to the city. The market is referred to as the “fashion week” of the home furnishing world. With more than 11.5 million square feet of show space, it’s the perfect destination for interior designers, furniture buyers, homebuilders, and architects. Take a trip to the past in the Museum of Old Domestic Life where you can see how residents of High Point lived in the 19th century. The museum is located in a Quaker meeting house dated back to 1858 and has exhibits that depict how people cooked, farmed, made textiles, and made shoes. Located in Jamestown, NC, only 11 minutes outside of High Point, is the

world’s largest furniture store and premiere commercial furniture showroom, Furnitureland South. The store is 1.3 million square feet and has over 1,000 pieces of fine, high-quality furniture and accessories. Since 1969, the store has provided a premium shopping experience to all who visit. L I F E ON T H E PEN I NSU L A Exploring the picturesque Holy City. words SAMANTHA HUSTED

The cobblestoned streets of Downtown Charleston are lined with pastel houses and slow moving horse drawn carriages. Charleston, with its undeniable sense of Southern, Lowcountry charm, consists of a network of unique neighborhoods lined with historic landmarks, local boutiques, and five-star restaurants. Downtown Charleston, also known as the “Peninsula,” has long held a special place in our hearts. We recently revisited the port city and devised a list of some of our favorite, must-see attractions. The Battery/White Point Garden The Battery is one of Charleston’s most visited and beloved outdoor destinations. Located in the historic district, the Battery was originally used as a public garden. You can walk along the seawall and view the historic cannons, check out the historical houses that line the path, and visit the White Point Gardens and walk under the beautiful live oak trees, which can be found across the street. Joe Riley Waterfront Park The Joe Riley Waterfront Park is an eight-acre, picturesque park that stretches languidly along the Charleston Harbor and the Cooper River. Relax under the shade as boats come and go, explore the beautifully designed water fountains, or grab lunch at one of the many waterfront restaurants.

Explore Historic King Street Named after King Charles II of England, King Street is Charleston’s premier historic shopping district. King Street can be divided into three districts: Lower King Street is where you will find the Antiques District, Middle King Street is dubbed the Fashion District, and Upper King is the Design/ Dining District. If you’re looking for unique furniture you won’t find anywhere else, we recommend checking out King Street. They also have an array of local boutiques such as men's clothing store Berlin’s, women’s apparel store Finicky Filly, and the fashion forward boutique Worthwhile. Upper King Street Dining Upper King Street — aka the Dining District — is best known for its unparalleled culinary experiences. Some of our favorite spots include Leon’s, a laid back fried chicken and oyster eatery known for their delicious salads, cheap beer, and rosé on tap. We also recommend The Darling Oyster Bar, Basic Kitchen, Melfi’s, Wild Common, and Felix to name a few. Explore the Historic Churches Charleston, often referred to as the “Holy City,” is home to a plethora of historic churches whose steeples reach high into the sky. Regardless of religious affiliation, we recommend visiting these churches to appreciate them as a relic of history.

TR AVEL Some of our favorites include the iconic St. Philip's Church, built in 1835, St. Michael's Episcopal Church i.e. Charleston’s oldest church completed in 1761, and the French Huguenot Church from 1845. Take a Ghost Tour Drawn to the spookier things in life? Not afraid of things that go bump in the night? If so, we definitely recommend taking a ghost tour! Charleston dates back hundreds of years. It’s home to historic graveyards and tombs, gallows, and battle sites. Some of our favorite tours include Bulldog Tours, Old South Carriage Company (take their Haunted Carriage Ghost Tour), and Old Charleston Walking Tours. Eat and Drink on East Bay Street Home to the iconic Rainbow Row, East Bay Street is a bustling road filled with cocktail bars and trendy restaurants. We recommend stopping at The Gin Joint, a classic cocktail spot with an extensive spirit collection. Then stop at 167 Raw for some delectable sushi before continuing your journey down the ever-popular East Bay Street. Explore the Architecture and Museums It wouldn’t be a trip to Charleston without a day spent exploring the beautiful architecture that makes up the Holy City. Perhaps the most “Instagram worthy” stop is Rainbow Row, a series of 13 historic pastel houses along the seawall. If you’re an art buff, we recommend visiting the The Gibbes Museum.

Find the Hidden Alleyways Unlike the dingy alleyways of larger cities, Charleston’s secret alleyways are more like charming little footpaths meant to be sought out and explored by visitors. Many of them are shrouded by trees with glimmers of light streaking through. The picturesque spots are quaint and often hard to find, but are definitely worth a visit. Here are a list of Charleston’s hidden alleyways: Longitude Lane, Gateway Walk, Philadelphia Alley, Zig Zag Alley, Beadon’s Alley, St. Michael’s Alley, Unity Alley, Gateway Walk, and Stoll’s Alley. esigning a house is one thing: Plenty of builders can get a standard blueprint and find the right subcontractors. But designing a home is something else entirely. Good home design doesn’t come from a stack of cookie-cutter blueprints. It comes from a collaboration between the designer and homeowner. When clients work with Sheedy Watts Design, they work with a residential design studio dedicated to bringing their unique vision to life. “Our best feedback,” says Ray Sheedy, “has been from clients who say we have listened to their ideas and incorporated them creatively into the design of a project.”

1501 E. 7th Street, Suite 5

Sheedy Watts Design draws from 25 years of residential design experience. They’ve taken on a wide range of projects in the Charlotte area, from new construction design to wholehome remodeling. “Our work encompasses all scales of home design,” says Cale Watts. “We use a collaborative team approach to every design, and we include the client’s input at every stage of the process.” Whether they’re remodeling a ’50s-era house in Myers Park or designing a contemporary home in Charleston, Sheedy Watts Design always puts client satisfaction first. You can trust Sheedy Watts to design a house you’ll love to call home.

he Redesign Company is not a traditional interior design studio on purpose. Christina Britt Lewis, Kelly Lies, and Cole Lewis redesign homes from Charlotte to New York City to San Francisco happily incorporating the things that people already have. They believe home should be a reflection of who we are and what we love. Her own home in Wesley Heights, with a killer rooftop view of the Charlotte skyline, reflects Christina’s fun and easy approach to design. She proudly mixes high end with low end to create a vibe that makes us feel like we can put our feet up and our drink down. A fancy Four Hands

dining table feels just right with humble Ikea chairs. A gallery wall with original art by Charlotte artists, Pamela Wingard and Kent Youngstrom, feels less highfalutin with a papier mâché moose whose antlers are adorned with her son’s football championship rings. Christina suggests, “Make home your happy place. Art that moves your soul, books that open your mind, music that makes you dance, candlelight that makes you feel sexy, people you love drinking wine and eating charcuterie in the kitchen… this is how we love coming home. Everything we really need, we already have.”
