M

usicians who have been upstaged by COVID-19 are thrilled that live entertainment is making a comeback and that the music scene is returning to a more normal situation in Arizona.

Chuck Hall, who recently played

at Charly’s Pub and Grill in the Weatherford Hotel in Flagstaff and Page Springs Vineyards and Cellars in Cornville, said he looks forward to playing at The Windsock Cocktail Lounge in Prescott and other area venues.

“I never completely stopped, but I was picky about what I was doing,

and I want to maintain space. I’m not ready to completely dive back in,” said the musician, who also teaches guitar and took his lessons to Zoom.

Hall, who has been inducted into the Arizona Blues Hall of Fame, said the last time he performed at The Windsock, his band performed in the parking lot because not many people were allowed into the bar during the pandemic.

“We did one [concert] inside, but it was hard to get people in. Now, the numbers are crawling back up,” he said.

Before the pandemic, Hall was performing six or seven days a week. “It was kind of scary at first, wondering whether you would be able to stay afloat.”

hen Contemporary Resorts and Residences opened the Verde Ranch RV Resort in August 2019, the company did not account for the pandemic in its business plan – first, the shutdown of business in spring 2020, and then the surge in RV sales and rentals as the home-weary headed out to explore the world in their own space.

Verde Ranch RV Resort, located in Camp Verde, with its beautiful clubhouse, WiFi, heated pool, two hot tubs, fitness center, game and craft rooms, dive-in movies, ice cream socials, walking trail along the Verde River, coordinated activities and 5,000-square-foot dog park, has taken life on the road to a new level of accessible luxury.

A Faster Trip from Farm to Shelf Bashas’ is working to streamline the path of local foods to consumer tables

or more than a year, the pandemic has shaken things up, including how grocery stores (a $40 billion industry) can efficiently execute the journey that food and other products must make from farms, ranches and other production centers to our tables, pantries and garages.

Arizona’s Bashas’ Family of Stores has taken an innovative step forward to speed up the connection between grocers and local suppliers by partnering with Forager, an East Coast online and mobile platform.

Bashas representatives say that during the pandemic, consumers have increased their focus on local suppliers as sources of high quality, nutritious and fresh foods that will both protect their health and put money back into local economies.

This focus on shopping local, magnified during a crisis, is in line with the increasing popularity over several decades of farmers markets and Community Supported Agriculture (CSA).

The Bashas’ chain, founded in 1932 and with more than 118 locations across Arizona, has long been known for being at the center in this hunt for local suppliers to fill the demand for fresh products.

“Focus on local community, the local economy and local vendors is truly the bedrock of Bashas’ Family of Stores,” said Steve Mayer, Bashas’ senior vice president of marketing, merchandising and procurement. “We are the hometown grocer and have always been focused on taking care of Arizonans, whether through providing jobs for a smaller community or selling goods from local and hyper-local suppliers.”

From the Bashas’ point of view, the technology that Forager uses will streamline the process of getting food and other products to consumers, and give the grocer an edge in the state’s crowded and lucrative grocery sector.

“One of the biggest and most publicly noticed challenges at the very beginning of the pandemic was the absence of many items, resulting from the initial wave of panic purchasing,” Mayer said. “This was something experienced across the country. While the majority of items have returned to ‘regular’ available levels, there continue to be some products that remain hard to source.”

Another change for stores during the pan-

demic has been less foot traffic, but at the same time, consumers are making larger purchases.

“That shift [to fewer trips to the store] makes it all the more important to capture those sales when the customers are there and ensuring we have what they are looking for,” he noted.

An additional challenge has been the reliance of supermarkets on the trucking industry to transport food long distances, sometimes resulting in produce remaining in the back of a truck for days.

The sophisticated Forager model is an effort to solve many of these challenges. David Stone, a serial entrepreneur, launched Forager in 2015 in Portland, Maine “out of a desire to improve his family’s nutrition and health that led him on a three-month exploration of food systems around the world,” said Forager’s Joe Blunda.

That search led to the establishment of digital local food supply chains in multiple locations throughout the United States.

“Our partnership with Bashas’ is local to their geography [all of Arizona],” Blunda explained.

“It began through direct outreach to them via our network. At the time, they had just established their forward-looking strategy to drive growth, and had decided that evolving their local buying program was a critical piece of their future. So, the timing for us to connect was ideal.”

The partnership with Bashas’ expands on some of the initial work by Forager in Arizona supporting food access and justice during the height of the pandemic, he added.

Mayer said the Forager model helps “bring all of the pieces together” by helping to “tap into and showcase” a lot more local suppliers.

“Forager is a way for both the supplier and ourselves to get connected in a more powerful way,” he said. “We can now source products from a local company for just one store, for a few stores or for every store.”

It seems the new partnership and its state-ofthe-art local sourcing program is right in line with the mood of consumers.

According to the Forager website, “85% of shoppers would likely change grocers to find more local food,” and “96% of shoppers agree that local food is the freshest, healthiest, most nutritious and safest food available.”

“Forager is a digital SAAS (software as a service) platform that connects wholesale and retail buyers with local independent farmers, fishers and grocers to manage discovery, procurement and payment processing,” said Blunda. “David’s Continued on page 39

Arizona Downs Returns to Live Racing

fter a weak 2020 summer racing season that was jeopardized by the pandemic and subsequent shutdowns, Arizona Downs in Prescott Valley has announced a return to live racing, effective June 1.

The track, east of Prescott Valley at 10501 E. AZ-89A, will feature live racing beginning at 1:30 p.m., every Tuesday and Wednesday through Sept. 15.

Steve Peterson, a spokesperson for the racetrack, said Arizona Downs will be managed

by Michael Weiss, a longtime horseracing industry leader who has deep ties to Arizona’s racetracks.

Weiss, most recently the general manager of Rillito Park Racetrack in Tucson, is a former student at the University of Arizona Race Track Industry Program (RTIP) in the College of Agriculture and Life Sciences. He is well known for pioneering that educational program and serves as a career advisor for graduates.

“Mike is the perfect fit to lead the revival of racing at Arizona Downs,” said National Horsemen’s Benevolent and Protection Association President Leroy Gessman. “He has a genuine passion for a successful future in Arizona racing. We are fortunate to have him.”

“I am excited for the opportunity to contribute to efforts to save Arizona horse racing.

It truly is worth saving. I look forward to rebuilding Arizona Downs and assembling a safe environment for horsemen. I also want a memorable experience for fans,” Weiss said.

Arizona Downs is one of two major horseracing tracks in Arizona. The other is Turf Paradise in Phoenix.

Arizona Downs features a combination of quarterhorse and thoroughbred racing.

The reopening of Arizona Downs comes at a critical time in Arizona horseracing history.

The Arizona legislature is considering a bill to modernize wagering at horse tracks and Off-Track Betting (OTB) sites. Senate Bill 1794 potentially will bring more than $300 million in capital investment to Arizona racing. It also could generate more than $100 million in new state tax revenues. Called Historic Horse Racing (HHR), it permits players to place pari-mutual wagers on past races. That allows tracks and the broader agri-business and racing industry to generate money after races and on non-race days. In Yavapai County, the benefits could amount to up to $1 million in new local tax revenues and 400 new jobs, according to studies. The new legislation would allow sports betting at track and OTB sites.

PRESCOTT VALLEY MAYOR ENDORSES HISTORIC HORSE RACING

Prescott Valley Mayor Kell Palguta recently issued a statement in which he endorsed Historic Horse Racing. Noting that tourism is a major economic factor in the community, Palguta said he and other town leaders viewed Arizona Downs as a major attraction and asset for businesses and families.

“Horse racing has been an important industry in Arizona since statehood,” he said.

“Arizona Downs is a part of our history. Improving Lives in Northern Arizona and Beyond Dr. Lex and Dr. Quigley celebrate 30 years of plastic surgery – reattaching limbs, fixing cleft palates, reconstructing disfigurements and making cosmetic improvements.

he girl was four years old. She had been riding in the back of a pickup truck when a bale of hay flew out. The wire holding the hay together caught one of the girl’s hands and ripped through four fingers.

Jack Quigley, M.D., and Stephen Lex, M.D., worked to reattach the fingers and put the girl’s hand back together. Both are board certified in plastic and reconstructive surgery and have additional training in hand surgery. The procedure took 12 hours and required using veins from the girl’s toes to reconstruct the blood vessels in her fingers. “Two of the fingers lived,” said Dr. Quigley. “She has a thumb and two fingers. She’s doing well.”

Through their work – performing intricate microvascular reconstruction and reattaching limbs – the surgeons have often found themselves making headlines. “Over the course of about four or five years, we did about five arm re-plantations,” said Dr. Lex. “That was

kind of a big deal that required a team approach with orthopedics and general surgeons.”

One patient was an 11-year-old girl whose arm was severed in a truck accident. Another was an Arizona Cardinals football player, also in a car accident.

Both surgeries were successful.

For more than 30 years, the plastic surgeons have managed their practice, plus been on call at Flagstaff Medical Center (FMC) for emergency trauma cases that are often the result of recreational activities, barroom brawls or car wrecks.

TOGETHER AS GENERAL SURGEON RESIDENTS

The doctors met when they were doing their general surgery residencies together at Case Western Reserve Care System in Ohio, in the early 1980s. Dr. Lex came to Flagstaff in 1989. “I had a wife and three little kids and was taking calls every night,” he said. “Jack arrived about 10 months later. He was the light at the end of the tunnel for me. It was

so great to get him here.”

In 1991, they were practicing from the Physician and Surgeons Office Building, which was at the north end of FMC. “We quickly outgrew the 3,000 square feet there and decided we needed a bigger place,” said Lex. “This land became developed here [on North San Francisco St., across from FMC] and we decided to have the surgery center.”

Within the next few years, the young plastic surgeons became land developers and landlords, overseeing the buildout of five medical buildings, including the 11,000-square-foot Plastic Surgeons of Northern Arizona (PSNA) building. On April 1, 1996, PSNA became the first free-standing surgery center in Flagstaff. Instead of having one operating room, the doctors planned for growth and built two. The privacy worked well for patients who wanted to maintain their anonymity, often while undergoing cosmetic surgery procedures such as facelifts and tummy tucks.

The doctors say their mission with PSNA always has been to provide stateof-the-art surgical care to all residents of Northern Arizona. Surgeries range from elective procedures like browlifts and body sculpting, to reconstructive operations after skin and breast cancer, to structural surgeries to correct con-

genital defects like cleft lip, cleft palate and microtia ear. They also perform endoscopic carpal tunnel and trigger finger release surgery, administer Botox injections, resurface skin and use dermal fillers.

They say it’s a nice variety – about a third hand surgeries, a third reconstruction, and a third cosmetic. “It’s really great for keeping skills up in those areas, along with covering the ER

for trauma injuries,” said Quigley.

“I think our congenital patients, those who need multiple procedures for cleft lip and palate or microtia ear reconstruction, are one of the groups of patients that we develop close relationships with,” said Lex. “We see these kids from newborn to 21 years old. She celebrated her second anniversary wondering if she would be closing her doors for good. However, her resiliency triumphed.

CCJ Launching Mobile Home Park, Larger Thrift Shop

ncouraged by what seems to be an improving economy, the Prescott-based Coalition for Compassion and Justice (CCJ) is moving ahead with two major projects. One is to create an affordable housing project consisting of an estimated 20-unit mobile home park to accommodate homeless or low-income individuals and/or families. The second is the early April opening of the CCJ Thrift Store in its new location at 531 Madison Avenue, adjacent to Miller Valley Road.

Both projects have been in the planning stages for several months and now seem to be reaching fruition, said Jessi Hans, CCJ executive director.

MOBILE HOME PARK

Hans says the capital campaign to fund the mobile home park is expected to generate $800,000 in the next year and a half. CCJ hopes to locate the park on approximately 4.5 acres in the greater Prescott area. No specific location has been identified yet.

“This will be the most expensive project CCJ has ever taken on. But it is a stepping stone to those who want to have a home,” she said. “I can’t

disclose who we are negotiating with, especially in this time of volatile land prices, but I am confident that CCJ will find property that is useful to all involved.”

Hans said the first year will likely involve the location of about a dozen one-, two- or three-bedroom mobile homes. Rentals are estimated to range from $600 to $800 a month in the initial phase. A full-time CCJ employee will live onsite as the property manager and to provide tenant assistance.

“It is our belief that individuals and families deserve homes of their own where they can feel a sense of dignity and privacy,” Hans said.

The project is part of what the CCJ calls its “Second Chance Housing Program.” The non-profit organization already has various rental units. Some are mobile homes. Others include three lodge-model homes, which can accommodate four to six people.

THRIFT STORE TO OPEN IN MAY

The CCJ Thrift Store, previously located on Fair Street, has been relocated to the main office on Miller Avenue. Now called the “Second Glance Thrift Store,” it will occupy more than 6,000 square feet, almost double its former space, in the remodeled building.

Cameron Lenbocker, a maintenance and home repair employee at CCJ, said the remodeling project was far more complex and expensive than what originally had been anticipated. “Construction costs have increased far beyond what we expected. Some materials have doubled in cost. That was a shock,” said Lenocker, who has been involved with CCJ for the past two-and-a-half years.

For the past several months, the thrift store has not accepted donations because of space limitations.

The new location is able to store small and large appliances, household goods and other items.

Hans said the thrift store is a major source of income for CCJ, as it contributes up to $20,000 a month to CCJ operations. It also provides

employment for several clients.

Paul Kirchgraber Takes Reins of PUSD Foundation Education advocate brings local knowledge and international experience

he new executive director of the Prescott Unified School District Education Foundation has national and international experience and credentials that bring him praise across the Quad Cities community.

Paul Kirchgraber recently accepted the head administrative position for the PUSDEF after having headed the Yavapai College Foundation (YCF) for almost 10 years.

“I watched the PUSDEF since its inception six years ago,” he said. “It is a remarkable success story. That small group of passionate volunteers saw a need and created an organization totally dedicated to providing financial support for amazing public school teachers, administrators and their programs.”

During the years since its founding, the PUSDEF has raised approximately $1 million, with those funds being used to support teacher grants, technology, curricular improvements, and teacher and student recognition programs.

Kirchbgraber accepted the position

following the retirement of former Executive Director Tami Phillips, who had headed the organization until her January retirement and relocation to Tennessee to be near family. “When that leadership position became available, it fit my timing perfectly,” he said.

Joe Howard, superintendent of the PUSD system, was enthusiastic about having Kirchgraber take the executive director’s position. “I’m thrilled that PUSD and the PUSDEF continue to land some of the best talent in the business for its many different leadership positions. Reflecting the Glow of a Lucky Starfish

here’s a popular story told by many a motivational speaker that describes a person walking along a beach who was picking up starfish on the shore and tossing them back into the ocean. An observer told the starfish thrower that his efforts were basically pointless because there were so many starfish on that stretch of sand, so he couldn’t possibly save them all and what he

was doing was not going to make a difference. Unphased by the discouraging comments, the starfish thrower kept walking along. He picked up another starfish and sent it back to the sea. “Well, I certainly made a difference to that starfish,” he said, as he continued on.

We’ve all heard stories about a lucky starfish and how a life was changed for the better because of someone lending a kind hand. In business and in life, we want to be

starfish throwers because, yes, it means we are helping someone in need, but also, just as important, we’re helping ourselves be the kind of people we want to be. Helping others – especially those who can’t possibly pay us back or return the favor – makes us feel good. And the power of feeling good in a time of mental health crisis cannot be understated.

When we feel good about ourselves, we may stand up a little straighter, smile a little broader and, I believe, be better at everything we do, including being kinder to each other. The trick to making a difference is recognizing the starfish, in whatever form it shows up.

That was made extraordinarily easy for me when a young woman with a huge smile was walking my way in a community college hallway years ago. I have to say, she glowed as she greeted me, a stranger.

I didn’t stop to find out who she was then, but I saw her again and again. Finally, we spoke, and I learned she was from Vietnam. She bubbled with an overabundance of joy and extreme gratitude. She believed she was blessed. She recognized she was

one of the fortunate few in the world who had the opportunity to earn an education. She was working on her studies while also holding down a job and mastering the English language.

And, she had lofty dreams, I thought.

She was determined to be a pharmacist in the United States because she wanted to help people heal.

We would visit now and then, and I’d learn about academic awards she had won and scholarships she had obtained. With each achievement she seemed to be bursting with this rare raw joy, and I began to also really truly believe in her vision. It made me wonder how I could support her journey.

I had heard about women in a service club who were taking business clothes out of their own closets and giving them to young women who were about to enter the workforce. I remembered how challenging it was to dress “like the job you want” for countless interviews after graduating from college.

In my own closet hung a silky, yet structured, black and white dress with a delicate jacket that had a

faint pattern of tiny seashells. I had worn it once to a business luncheon. I loved the way it felt, the way it looked and the way it flowed with simple elegance. Part of me protested, “But, I love this dress!” The other part said, “Perfect.” And when I gave it to her, she glowed yet again.

Although I’ve heard the story of the starfish thrower many times since, she was the one who first told it to me. She believed that she was that lucky starfish.

As I reflect on that time, I do so with joy, as I remember her beautiful smiling face, and with gratitude because she taught me how to be a starfish thrower.

Prescott CARES Helping Businesses, Individuals Impacted by Pandemic

T

he City of Prescott has launched the Prescott CARES program with $427,000 to help Prescott residents pay rent, mortgage and utility bills and support struggling businesses. The program was created to help individuals and families maintain stable housing and keep businesses viable within the community.

Prescott CARES funding was made possible through an emergency grant from the U.S. Department of Housing and Urban Development. The contract was applied for competitively and secured by the Prescott Chamber of Commerce. Funding is to be distributed via contract with the Prescott Chamber of Commerce Foundation.

“This critical funding will help people and businesses who are struggling financially due to the pandemic,” said Prescott Chamber CEO and President Sheri Heiney. “We want to be sure people can afford housing and we want to support the recovery of businesses that are the lifeblood of our community.”

Heiney emphasized that this emergency funding is available on a first-come, first-served basis. “We encourage individuals and businesses to apply as quickly as possible,” she said.

The Prescott CARES program can provide up to $3,000

in rent, mortgage and utility payments to eligible residents. To qualify, individuals must: 1) have been residents of Prescott since March 1, 2020; 2) have lost income directly as a result of the pandemic (proof of loss is required); 3) have not received a federal housing subsidy in the past 12 months; and, 4) qualify based on their income.

The maximum income to receive this funding is $36,200 for an individual, and that rate increases with the size of the family.

The Prescott CARES program can provide up to $5,000 to a business that has been impacted financially by the COVID-19 pandemic. To be eligible, a business must: 1) be physically located in the City of Prescott in a brick-and-mortar business with customers primarily based in Prescott; 2) have been in operation for at least six months prior to the COVID-19 pandemic (Sept 16, 2019); 3) provide evidence of potential job loss as a result of COVID-19; and, 4) provide evidence of being able to retain jobs for at least six months after receiving the grant.

Nine Yavapai County Students Earn Academic Scholarships

ine Yavapai County students representing seven different communities are receiving a $3,500 scholarship from the Gardner Family Teachers Scholarship Endowment (GiFTS).

Those receiving scholarships are: N Chino Valley: Emily Schuler, sophomore-Yavapai College; Hayley Feipel, sophomore-University of Phoenix; Alondra Mendez, junior-Grand Canyon University.

Community Discusses Mental Health Crisis

he impact of more than a year of isolation created by the COVID-19 pandemic, in addition to job and housing losses, economic deprivation and personal and social crises, has resulted in radical increases in mental health issues.

That is what leaders of several professional health organizations in the greater Quad Cities community shared during a two-hour town hall meeting last month, sponsored by the City of Prescott at City Hall.

“As we are coming out of the worst of the pandemic, it’s important we talk about how our citizens and their families are doing,” said Prescott Mayor Greg Mengarelli.

Mengarelli introduced Amy Seets Moore, the mother of Tye Seets. In an emotional presentation, she said she felt compelled to speak out about mental health issues, which had destroyed her son’s life. She said if what she shared could help anyone else understand how important it is to seek out help during times of mental anguish, it was worth the pain she suffered when sharing his story.

Seets graduated from Prescott High School in 2012 and then enlisted in the Army, where he served in Afghanistan. Upon discharge, Seets returned to Prescott and became a firefighter. He married and was the father of a young son and daughter. His mother described how he suffered from stressful military memories and PTSD. His mental issues grew until he took his own life by gunshot March 17.

Moore said she was pleading for people who need support to seek help from professional personnel and agencies, no matter what the circumstances.

PROFESSIONAL SUPPORT AVAILABLE

Several local authorities spoke to describe the kind of help available. Yavapai County Communities Health Services Director Leslie Horton shared data showing alarming statistics for Yavapai County regarding the death rate from suicide and drug overdose. She said that suicides among youth age 17 and younger totaled 31 last year, 18 more than the previous year. She said suicides have increased among older populations, too, more than twice as high as other Arizona counties. She also noted

that overdose deaths rose from 82 in 2019 to 86 in 2020.

Spectrum Health Care CEO April Rhodes said that isolation from others had created a critical issue in the healthcare environment, and that citizens need to make an effort to connect with others.

“Behavioral health care is available at our facilities,” said West Yavapai Guidance Clinic CEO Tamara Player. I urge people to call us on our crisis intervention hotline at 877-756-4090 or walk in at the Crisis Stabilization Units at 8655 E. Eastridge Drive in Prescott Valley. We’re open 24 hours a day, seven days a week.”

Terros Health, which has several offices in the greater Phoenix area, was represented online by crisis manager Michael Lawhon. He said the Terros objective is to offer help to those in crisis at any time. In the past four years, Terros has assisted more than 10,000 people.

Nancy Gardner, program manager for the Yavapai Justice and Mental Health Coalition, told the audience that YJMHC is working to coordinate with all other local services and wants to help those in need make rapid contact by calling 928-554-8593.

Meanwhile, the Coalition for Compassion and Justice (CCJ) stressed the need for shelter and homes for homeless individuals and families.

“Having a roof over your head relieves a lot of stress, and we’re trying to make that happen,” said Executive Director Jessi Hans.

Two local law enforcement leaders – Prescott Interim Chief of Police Amy Bonner and Yavapai County Sheriff’s Office Sgt. Ethan Stover said each of their respective law agencies had spent hours in training for crisis intervention awareness. They also said more and more cooperation and collaboration among all agencies is occurring to provide residents with up-to-date information about where they can get help for mental health issues.

A limited number of residents were allowed in person for the town hall, and there were an estimated 60 participants online.

Mengarelli concluded the town hall by noting that Prescott city officials will continue to stress the need for ongoing mental health programs for all ages. He said Yavapai County is fortunate to have many agencies that provide counseling, therapy and legal services to address those issues.

Animals Helping to Ease Pandemic Stress Free zoo and farm days invite families outdoors

t’s challenging enough to be a young person with mental health issues without the added trauma generated by a worldwide pandemic. Children and teens the world over are grappling with the stress, fear, grief, isolation and uncertainty created by COVID-19.

Unfortunately, the struggles and losses of the past 14 or so months are likely to continue to affect young people and their families for some time.

These hard times are shining a spotlight on an annual event that traditionally is devoted to raising awareness about children’s mental health, National Children’s Mental Health Awareness Week, which has been declared by Gov. Doug Ducey to be May 2-7 in Arizona.

The 2021 theme for Children’s Mental Health Awareness in Arizona is “Every Child’s Mental Health Counts,” with a focus on ever-mounting issues for the young, including restless and fearful sleep, changes in mood and behavior, increases in aggression and irritability, decreased interest in schoolwork and academic achievement, increased use of drugs and alcohol and dwelling on thoughts of death and suicide.

The Family Involvement Center (FIC), a 20-year-old non-profit with offices in Prescott Valley, Flagstaff, Phoenix and Tucson, is sponsoring two free events that will welcome all individuals and families who want to raise their spirits by enjoying the outdoors and interacting with animals.

The first is Free Zoo Day, scheduled for Saturday, May 8, at Reid Park Zoo in Tucson, and the second is on Saturday, May 15, at Mortimer Farms in Dewey.

Executive Director Jane Kallal started FIC in 2002 as a family-run organization where the family “voice” is central in receiving services.

“Although the events of the last year affected everyone, they were especially troubling for kids and young people,” Kallal said. “These free zoo days are a way to connect families with resources to help children with a mental health condition. The mission of the Family Involvement Center has always been to offer hope to parents and help them connect with another parent who understands, bringing them awareness that they are not alone. This is even more important this year as many have too often been isolated from social settings.”

The non-profit has been hosting events like these for almost 15 years to mark CMHA Week. In the past, families have been invited to large picnics, but this year, organizers decided to do the Zoo Days events to provide something outside that would be joyful for families.

“The feedback we receive from par-

ents and youth has included comments about how they want more opportunities like this to meet and socialize with others who are on a similar journey,” she said.

The non-profit is partnering with Banner University Health Plans, Mercy Care, Arizona Complete Health, Health Choice, NARBHA Institute, and Fire-

fighter Angel to host these events.

Often, the concept is, “I am paying rent now so if I pay the same amount for a mortgage then I will be all right.” Well, the answer is maybe, maybe not. That all depends on a number of factors.

Our discussion will keep you out of trouble and put you on solid footing for home ownership.

PREPARING FOR THE LARGEST PURCHASE IN YOUR LIFE

Yes, owning a home is exciting, but there are a number of things you need to do to make sure you are successful.

What must be top of mind is to make sure you have enough money to buy food and other essential life needs.

How large should the down payment be? The goal should be at least 20%. Putting 20% down will eliminate the cost of PMI (private mortgage insurance).

PMI will add a couple hundred dollars

to your monthly payment. It is about 1% of the amount borrowed per year. This insurance does not protect you; it protects the bank, but you pay. Stay away from zero down and certainly don’t do anything less than 10%!

There will be other costs that you will need to pay, such as closing costs, inspection fees, perhaps legal fees. All these will need to figure into your costs to purchase. It may be possible to get the sellers to pay some, but that is not likely to happen in a seller’s market.

GET YOUR FINANCIAL HOUSE IN ORDER

Eliminate all other debt. Pay off those credit cards, student loans, car payments and personal loans. When you pay these off, you will free up money to use for other things.

Be absolutely certain to have an emergency fund. I cannot stress how important this will be. When you rented, the landlord fixed anything that broke.

Well, now you are the landlord and you will have to fix anything that may break. Trust me on this, something will break. That old furniture may not look so good and may need to be replaced. There will be other fix-up

things like blinds, shades or curtains for those windows, landscaping and maybe painting. These projects can add up quickly, so have a budget and put the cash aside. If you don’t, you will run up those credit cards and create new debt, taking important dollars away from your much-needed items to live.

THE FOUNDATION IS IN PLACE; NOW WHAT?

All debt has been eliminated, an emergency fund is in place, a fix-up fund is in hand and the all-important down payment is covered. What is your next step?

How much can you afford? What should be your monthly payment? The goal is to not spend more than 25% of your take-home pay on your mortgage payment. In addition, you don’t want to have a mortgage for more than 15 years.

With a shorter period to pay down your mortgage, you will actually own your home instead of the bank owning it.

What would it be like to not have a mortgage or rent payment? Now you will truly be able to build wealth. Yes, you will need homeowner’s insurance and to pay property tax but these two expenses will be small compared to your income.

WHAT IS INCLUDED IN THE MORTGAGE PAYMENT?

Included in the mortgage payment are a number of costs. The actual amount

you borrow to purchase is part of the payment. This will be the repayment of principal and the payment of interest (P&I). Then you will need homeowners insurance. Property tax and any HOA (Home Owners Association) fees will be included.

When shopping for a new home, you need to take these costs into consideration. The higher they are, the less will be available for the principal and interest and the less house you will be able to afford.

For example, if we assume that your take-home pay is $5,000 per month, 25% would be about $1,250 per month for your mortgage payment. Now, if property tax is $200 per month, homeowners insurance is $100 per month. If there is an HOA (homeowners association) fee, you would reduce that amount as well. For our example, we will only take property tax and insurance into consideration. $1,250 less $200 less $100 will leave $950 for principal and interest.

Interest rates are low right now around 3% - so let’s use that for our example. Our mortgage payment cannot exceed $950 for principal and interest. This means you can borrow about $137,000. Add in a 20% down payment of $34,250, and you can afford a home valued at $171,250.

To buy a home of higher

value, you will need to have a larger down payment or increase your income to be able to afford a larger mortgage payment.

OTHER FACTORS

In many markets, the ability to buy a home is very competitive. Get yourself preapproved for a mortgage. Know what you can afford. Stay away from any variable rate mortgage. Rates are only likely to increase from where they are now.

Work with a knowledgeable real estate broker. A good broker will know the market and what it will take to be successful once you have found your dream home. Make this a happy process and enjoy it!

One last thought: your forever house does not exist. We bought ours three houses ago. The average time spent in one home is seven years.

Practicing Powerful Daily Routines for Success

ost Americans wake up feeling tired and sluggish. Many of us wake up with a mood that is neutral or slightly negative and we spend most of the morning trying to get caught up.

This article does not promise to makeover your entire life or guarantee that you’ll become a morning person ready to run five miles before the sun rises – unless that’s your goal, and if so, rise and grind! This article will, I hope, provide some opportunities for a shift in perspective. With

small, incremental changes, you’ll reflect and see that you are successful because of the following powerful daily routines.

ONLY YOU CAN DEFINE WHAT SUCCESS MEANS FOR YOU

Before you go out and buy planners, journals and organizers, spend some time in self-reflection. What is it that you want to achieve that would mean success?

The key to this is to be specific.

When defining success, try to be as exacting as you can. Many people like to create SMART goals: Specific,

You’re re-wiring your brain. There are plenty of TED Talks, podcasts and books that talk about success and happiness. It can all be distilled into a specific area of psychology referred to as cognitive behavior therapy. You didn’t develop your habit of staying up late or not exercising in just a day, so it’s going to take that much more to unlearn and re-learn a new pattern in its stead.

Once you have a Specific, Measurable, Attainable, Relevant and Timely goal laid out for yourself, write it down! There is no exception to this.

Neuroscience research proves that the act of writing makes your mind more efficient by helping you focus on the important stuff.

FIND A SYSTEM OF ACCOUNTABILITY

There’s a reason why so many New Year’s Resolutions never make it past February. We as humans are a fickle sort and are easily distracted.

If we can think of an excuse not to

do something (such as cultivate a routine for success), we will find that excuse. And then the habit fizzles out.

MAKE IT A ROUTINE

This may seem obvious, especially for an article entitled “Practicing Powerful Daily Routines for Success,” but humans are creatures of habit. If you want to give yourself the best chance of success, plan your SMART goal in a way that you can achieve it routinely, preferably, daily. Here are some examples of goals that can quickly become routines, therefore having the most excellent chance of sticking and making you feel successful: N Make the bed every morning.

N Lay out work clothes the night before.

N Meditate before bed.

N Turn off electronics by 11 p.m.

Again, your un-habits weren’t formed overnight, so it will take that much more effort to unlearn and then practice new habits in their place. You can do it!

this is a powerful daily routine that is transformative. It can be as small as finding gratitude every morning before your feet hit the floor or writing out something you’re grateful for while writing the day’s to-do list.

Every person is different, but if you can incorporate, “Today I am grateful for…” as a daily routine, it will guarantee your success.

Practicing gratitude eases symptoms of anxiety and depression, fosters better moods and is linked to positive feelings and a sense of well-being. With a daily gratitude practice, you provide your brain with the neurochemicals that allow it to be primed for positive habits.

Your daily routines for success will compound and you’ll find it to be easier to add new goals. Practicing gratitude is foundational to building your personal, powerful daily routine for success – one that only you can define.

How to Help Pets Burn Energy in Summer

ne challenge we all experience during the summer is how to burn enough energy as the temperature rises. Walks are more spread out and many canines become destructive, as they’re bored and have pent up energy. Here are some ideas on ways to challenge our furry friends mentally and physically when it’s too hot to be outside.

One question I often ask clients is how they feed their dog. This is a great opportunity to burn energy, for there are many tools that provide enrichment during mealtime. During the summer, I switch from regular bowls to slow feeder bowls. This makes my furry friends work a little harder for their meal, and for the higher energy canines, I use a Kong Wobbler. This toy allows for the pup to bat around the toy that only lets treats or their kibble come out sporadically. When they’re done, they’re typically just as tired as they would be if they went for a walk!

Puzzles are another way to stimulate and challenge the canine brain and there are so many different ones from which to choose. My favorite brands for this are Outward Hound and Dognition. They can be found

with varying levels on the challenge scale and are available on amazon. com or chewy.com. Depending on the size of the puzzle, you can even feed meals this way as well!

The Kong and other enrichment toys can be a marvelous addition to any summer routine. The biggest problem I see is most people put peanut butter in the Kong and the dog either eats it fast and they’re off to doing bad things, or they’re not as interested in it. Kong has a great recipe page on the company’s website with great ideas on how to stuff it, but I like to be creative and come up with various ways to challenge them.

Freezing canned dog food inside the Kong is a quick, high-value stuffing that lasts much longer than most other stuffing options. Most people do not realize it but they are microwave, dishwasher and freezer safe, so it’s easy to clean and start over again! One last note when it comes to the Kong, make sure you have the right size and strength for your dog’s jaws. For heavy chewers, we use the Extreme Kong and for puppies and senior dogs, the Rubber Kong is more flexible for their jaws.

Training can also be a great way to stimulate the brain. I love to teach my dogs to find treats and use their

nose to stimulate them while using an innate strength. Nose work can tire a canine friend faster than one would believe. I first start by placing a treat on the ground and cue “FIND IT.” Once they find it, I will go on hiding more treats and continue to make it more challenging for them.

Encouraging those natural foraging behaviors helps stimulate them mentally and physically.

Another fun way to invigorate their minds through commands is playing the come game. We play hide and seek with the dogs and challenge them to find us. Tricks also can be a fun relationship builder and a way to burn energy. Teaching a new trick each day can really be a great indoor activity while it’s hot outside.

Arizona’s summer weather makes it tough to give everything we want to give our canine companions. However, there are many things we can do that not only burn energy, but also help with creating and maintaining the best relationship between canines and their handlers! New Treatment Being Tested for Chronic Dizziness

f you have ever had a bout of dizziness, you would empathize with an individual who experiences dizziness chronically. Most of us have had an episode of car sickness or sea sickness. Imagine being in that state all the time! It is one of the most debilitating symptoms a person can have. Their entire life is consumed by the sensation of vertigo and coping with the nausea and disorientation it causes.

Drugs to treat vertigo are designed to reduce the sensitivity of the balance organs and usually have the side effect of making the person groggy or sleepy.

In some conditions, the drugs are not helpful at all. Chronic vertigo can be caused by many conditions, including circulation issues, low blood pressure, dysfunction of the inner ear (vestibu-

lar systems), medication side effects, trauma to the head or neck and viruses, which cause damage to the vestibular system. The vertigo may start out slowly and cause dizziness intermittently or suddenly begin and stay all day and never go away.

BILATERAL VESTIBULAR HYPOFUNCTION

One type of dizziness is called bilateral vestibular hypofunction, or BVH. Bilateral (both ears), vestibular (balance organ) hypofunction (the organs work but not correctly). It is estimated that about 1.8 million people have this disorder. Because humans use multiple inputs to navigate the world, having one input disrupted is a tremendous disadvantage. People with BVH are at risk for falls and have to concentrate on their balance to walk, bend over, stand

up and sit down during their daily activities.

As a person moves, the brain receives information from a few different sensory systems such as vision, muscles and joints and, finally, sensations from the inner ear balance areas. People with BVH have difficulty keeping their eyes, head and body steady. Head movements make their vision jump and blur, which makes walking a challenge.

It creates significant stress because the individual needs to concentrate to walk, and if they don’t, down they go.

Because the current medicines cause a degree of sedation, people are encouraged to avoid driving, swimming and walking on uneven surfaces. People with BVH are 30 times more likely to suffer a fall than their peers.

The vestibular nerve is located very close to the hearing nerve; essentially, in the same area of the head. The implant is designed to help people with damage to the delicate anatomy that makes up the vestibular system.

The inner ear has three tiny structures called semicircular canals that track the head’s rotation along three axes (imagine nodding, shaking your head and tipping your left or right eyebrow up).

Fluid in these canals pushes on sensory hair cells that change the mechanical signal to an electrical one in order to send information up the vestibular nerve. This implant restores most of the ability to walk, move and turn the head without dizziness. It helps people with BHV orient themselves in space!

A NEW IMPLANT AS A TREATMENT

The MVI is comprised of two parts.

There is an implanted device that stays just under the skin above the ear with its electrode embedded in the vestibular nerve and an external motion sensor device that sends signals inside to the electrode. The external device is designed to send information about the speed and direction of any head motion.

A tiny gyroscope is used to track the person’s head rotations in three dimensions, and

The Johns Hopkins University School of Medicine has begun research into a treatment that involves a modified cochlear implant. The multichannel vestibular implant (MVI) is designed to stimulate the balance nerve long-term, which makes it a 24-hour-per-day sensory restoration treatment. The implant electrode bypasses the malfunctioning area of the inner ear and stimulates the vestibular nerve in response to signals.

WHAT IS THE IMPLANT MADE OF?

a processor, which sends the rotational data to the internal implant to electrically stimulate the vestibular nerve. The implant uses nine electrodes to convey the information that would normally come from the three semicircular canals. This initiates head and eye reflexes that help maintain clearer vision during head movement and reduce the need to exert conscious effort to walk.

This research group has implanted eight people. All of the candidates already had hearing loss in the ear that was implanted. Some of the recipients lost more hearing in the implanted ear after the surgery and some of them maintained the hearing they had prior to the surgery. Community Rallies to Support Animal Sanctuary

A

nimal Guardian Network (AGN), a 22-acre 501(c)(3) non-profit senior animal sanctuary located in Camp Verde, has received some help from the community.

It was discovered that an essential piece of equipment for the organization, a John Deere Gator, had disappeared. AGN representatives say word of the loss spread quickly through the area, which sparked outrage at the thought of a non-profit being robbed.

“People offered to help in different ways, like lending or donating equipment, offering rewards leading to an arrest and pitching in to help distribute bales of hay,” said AGN Founder and President Carrie Singer.

Three days after the equipment went missing, the Gator was found, although in barely-operable condition. According to Singer, an individ-

ual reached out to John Deere CEO John May, in hopes of assistance.

“The letter reached a top executive, who felt compelled to help,” she said. “Arizona Stotz Equipment dealers came together and each contributed to provide AGN with a 2019 HPX615E Gator, retail value of $12,000, for a total purchase price of $3,000.”

Hector Albarran, consumer products sales manager for Stotz Equipment, a family-owned John Deere dealership, was instrumental in coordinating efforts to facilitate a replacement. Hector, along with several other Stotz employees, worked together with the eight Arizona stores, each sharing in the donation of a HPX615E Gator. Tim and Genevieve Manatt of Cedar Falls, Iowa, generously donated the money to pay for the unplanned expense.

The sanctuary is home to near-

ly 100 senior, special needs and hospice animals, the majority of which are livestock. The theft created a hardship in the ability to distribute more than eight bales of hay a day to feed the animals.

“Stotz Equipment is dedicated to creating a better life for our families, communities and those connected to the land,” said Singer. “This upstanding and remarkable company sure lived up to their purpose, enabling a charitable organization to not only continue providing for the animals in their care but doing it efficiently with John Deere equipment.”

Rough Year for Pets, Too Pandemic has caused challenges for pets and owners

t’s tricky enough to match up homeless pets with new owners, but the upheavals of 12 months of pandemic conditions have added to the challenges of animal adoption.

In some cases, it also has added new difficulties to the world of pet ownership.

Sudden changes for families facing unemployment and a loss of income because of the sweeping effects of COVID-19 have caused some to have to leave their homes because of evictions and foreclosures.

The unexpected and unwelcome chaos has left some pet owners to believe they have no other choice than to surrender their pets to animal shelters.

It is a heartbreaking way to have to part with one’s pets, said Jennifer

Brehler, executive director of the Humane Society of Sedona (HSS).

“Sadly, so far this year, 25% of the animals surrendered by their owners to HSS were the result of housing challenges.”

For the Humane Society of Sedona, the focus is on companion animals, dogs, puppies, cats, kittens and other small household companions such as rabbits, guinea pigs and hamsters.

“Our shelter is in a unique position that most of our animals come from other communities by way of being transported from other animal shelters, as we have a very low stray population in our immediate area of Sedona,” said Brehler, who began her career in animal sheltering and welfare 24 years ago at the Michigan Humane Society.

However, transporting animals of all kinds became more complicated and worrisome when the pandemic was unfolding.

“For the first few months of the pandemic, animal shelters across the country halted transporting animals

to other communities, as there was so much unknown with how COVID may affect animals, as well as the risk to the people doing the transportation to other communities,” she recalled. “Once it was determined animals did not pose a significant risk and protective measures for people were put into place, we were able to begin transporting in animals to HSS.” One bright spot during the pandemic is that pet adoption has become more popular, as people are spending so much time at home.

“Early on, we saw a significant increase in the number of people stepping up to foster and adopt shelter animals, with them having more time available and especially for individuals living alone, as they were looking for companionship,” she said. “A large majority also came forward to help homeless animals in general and to open up space at shelters for other animals in need.”

Attracting Wild Birds to Your Yard

he weather is getting better, and any excuse to sit outside and enjoy this spring warmth is probably welcome. Northern Arizona is full of beautiful scenery and sites for adventure, but you can enjoy one of Arizona’s beautiful sights in your very own yard: wild birds!

How familiar are you with the wild birds in your area? Do you know how to attract them to your yard? It seems simple enough: hang a feeder and wait. But there really is more to it. Everything from squirrels to plants can affect the birds coming to your feeders, so it’s not a bad idea to have a plan when it comes to how you can best accommodate the wild birds visiting your yard.

What are the kinds of birds you want to attract? This area has no shortage of interesting species, and, in general, you want to pay attention to the standard things, regardless of species: Birds like to have a safe environment; making sure they have native plants for coverage is important. Keeping feeders out of the reach of predators like roaming cats is also crucial.

Hummingbirds: Here’s a bird that’s easy to love! It’s one of my

personal favorites. There are about 18 different species of hummingbirds in Arizona, some of which are incredibly rare. Hummingbirds like nectar; there are lots of different recipes for nectar available, and you can even purchase it pre-made. Hanging lush red flowers next to your feeder will help hummingbirds find the feeder quickly. In fact, these birds are pretty smart – they are really good at finding your feeder, regardless of where you place it. That doesn’t mean you shouldn’t be tactful with feeder placement, though! Keep your feeder out of windy areas that may cause it to tip and spill nectar, which attracts insects. And, don’t forget to place your feeder next to a window so you can get a detailed view of these little guys! There is a less likely chance for a window collision when the feeder is closer to glass because they are unable to build up speed. If you have lots of birds coming to your feeder, expand!

Place your feeders far enough apart that there won’t be any fights for nectar.

Hummingbirds are unique because they like liquid feed, but what about the finches, warblers, wrens, doves and other species? High-quality birdseed usually includes black oil sunflower seeds, Nyjer (thistle) or

milo. Nyjer is often fed in small-hole feeders, which makes it accessible for birds with smaller beaks. e all strive to do whatever it takes to keep ourselves healthy. This includes regular checkups, and this is equally important for our furry family members, too. An annual wellness exam is the best way for your veterinarian to perform a variety of health screenings, which can potentially show early signs of a serious illness or disease.

This is also a good opportunity to get the preventative medications your pets may need, like heartworm

and/or flea and tick medication. In addition, dental appointments are recommended annually to check on their teeth and remove tartar buildup and/or plaque.

Another component of keeping ourselves and our pets healthy is through proper nutrition and exercise. Drinking water is necessary and important not only for us, but for our pets as well, so be sure to always have clean, fresh water for them. Feeding them the right type and amount of food is important as well and can help with health and possible weight

too! Having safe toys to play with will keep both dogs and cats interested and interacting with you. I hide treats in different places in my apartment so that my dog has to use her brain and senses to find them and be rewarded.

Cats always enjoy trying to catch that red dot from the laser pointer and it keeps them stimulated, active and healthy for a good amount of time! I wonder if one day they will ever catch that red dot. (I’ll never let mine!)

Another thing that’s important to both humans and pets is proper grooming. Who doesn’t love a good manicure? Your pet’s nails deserve the same attention, with regular trims so they don’t grow too long and become uncomfortable. And who doesn’t love having their hair brushed? I use my time cuddling with them on the couch to brush both my cats’ and the dog’s fur, as I find they are more relaxed at that time and seem to enjoy it more. A nice bath for your pooch once a week during the summer is good for them and it gives you a chance to check for ticks, which are very active this time of year.

It is especially important to spay or neuter your pets, not only to prevent overpopulation, but also for

their health. Spaying or neutering can help prevent certain diseases and cancers, cut down on many aggressive behaviors and even extend their life.

Finally, a huge part of staying healthy is through having a strong emotional bond. Strengthening the emotional connection with your pet helps with interactions with other people and animals as it trusts that you are there to take care of it, especially in unknown situations. Showing pets some love with belly rubs, playing, petting and cuddles together is not only good for them, but it will also improve your mood and extend the bond you have. No matter how bad your day may be or how bad you may feel, spending some quality time with your pets will make everything better. Even just sitting together with them on your lap as you pet them is emotionally soothing for you and for them.

er, that there will be a significant increase in the number of animals becoming homeless as the eviction moratorium is lifted across states, said Brehler, who lectures regularly at national animal welfare conferences and is an active member of The Association for Animal Welfare Advancement. “I’ve heard some shelters have experienced this already as tenants are choosing to move sooner rather than continue to collect charges that they will not be able to pay back as they have lost their jobs.”

Meanwhile, the Humane Society of Sedona has been operating on an appointment-only basis since the pandemic began. “It has significantly changed the level of guest services and increased the satisfaction and connection to our adopters and others we serve with our surrender, rehoming and lost and found programs. Visitors get a better experi-

ence, and the stress placed on staffing and animals has greatly decreased.”

Accommodations are still being made for walk-in traffic for various programs, including some adoptions.

For small animal and feline adoptions, adopters can visit in the animal rooms, but canine companion adoption meet-and-greet opportunities occur in the outdoor play yard and dog park.

“At times, people may be asked to come back a short time later for the next open appointment time,” she said. “We monitor traffic flow, require masks and maintain physical distancing throughout the facility.”

Many new procedures brought on during the pandemic may continue well beyond.

“At this time, we intend to continue with this model past the pandemic,” Brehler said. “It has allowed us to streamline our programs, given

us the time to focus on community involvement to help keep people and pets together, and dedicate better, not just more, time to the animals in our care.”

Looking ahead, there will be additional challenges when pets have to adapt to a return to normalcy for their owners’ work and school responsibilities. Brehler says shelters, trainers and behaviorists are bracing for separation anxiety in animals, especially for dogs. “We have seen this happen in the past with a smaller percentage of dogs when families return to school and longer work days after summer vacation. Given the extended timeframe of the pandemic, there is reason to worry.”

“The common perception is people in RVs are older, retired and traveling the country,” said Forrest. “But I’ve learned there is a huge population of full-time families and young young professionals who either work on the road or go from job to job as

workcampers. The pandemic has only increased those numbers.”

“RV-ing has really taken off in the last year,” confirmed Wendy Bryant, a geologist and avid traveler who works for a California environmental consulting firm. She found the Verde Valley RV Resort last month while looking for a site large enough to host “a trailer rally” for herself and her group of friends who travel

together in their own campers.

“It was super packed but surprisingly quiet. We were able to book five sites next to each other,” said Bryant. “Kids were out riding their bikes and walking their dogs, and the amenities were amazing.”

“What makes us unique is that we’re a family- and pet-friendly atmosphere. There are always people out and about doing something,”

said Forrest. “Also, we have a great location – 40 minutes to Sedona, an hour to Flagstaff, a quick day-trip to the Grand Canyon. There’s so much to do in the Verde Valley area.”

Prices range from $40 to $90 per night, depending on the size of the space.

“Guests with big motor homes, fifth wheels, toy haulers and those towing a car really like the 75-foot

sites,” said Forrest.

Cabins range from $115 to $210 per night.

Can Your Data, Business Survive a Disaster?

icture this: your office is on fire, your people are all safe, but now what? What important preparation do you wish you had done?

This is a phone call no business owner or manager ever wants to receive. A call from the police, late at night, that there’s been a fire at your premises. Luckily, it was empty at the time, and no one is hurt. That’s a huge relief.

But, you barely sleep. And at first light, you go in to examine the damage so that you can issue instructions to your staff.

You learn the fire wasn’t too big, and the fire service arrived quickly.

But your premises have been utterly devastated. The fire itself destroyed a room. Smoke has damaged the rest of the building. And it’s flooded, too, as a result of the firefighting efforts. It’s a good thing you are well covered on insurance.

As you’re surveying the damage, you see your server, located near where the fire was. It’s bent and twisted – clearly, that’s going to need to be replaced. Good thing you have

a backup. No, wait, the backup…

You feel your skin go cold as you remember a conversation you had with members of your team a few weeks ago. They’d noticed the automated backup had stopped working.

In fact, it hadn’t worked for some time. You agreed a new backup needed to be put in place at some point. Until then, you asked your colleague to make a manual backup a couple of times a week onto an external hard disc drive. That seemed an appropriate thing to do.

Before you start to hyperventilate, let’s go back to the real world. Your office is not on fire and your data – and your favorite coffee mug – are safe.

But, with all that in mind, what are the overdue jobs that you keep putting off? If the worst happened, what would you be kicking yourself about? What would you wish you’d have done this week?

Short of locking them in a fire-proof box overnight, you’re not going to be able to protect your devices from being damaged in a fire. However, there are certain steps you can take to keep them a little safer.

Our devices can be expensive. Especially when you have lots of them within a business – it soon adds up.

So, one of the first things you can do is to make sure they’re all insured.

Check if they’re included in your business insurance or whether they need to have their own insurance.

Make sure you’re covered for damage from disaster, but also for theft and accidental damage, too.

New Passenger Terminal Opens at Prescott Regional Airport

A

fter a year of construction and anticipation, the beautiful new passenger terminal at Prescott Regional Airport (PRC) opened to the public on March 30. Over the years, as Prescott has grown and changed, so too has the airport, and the new terminal is a testament to that. With a welcoming courtyard and two-way fireplace, travelers are welcomed to Prescott in a setting that sets the standard for their visit to our community, and family and friends can enjoy the space while waiting for their arrival. The passenger waiting area is equipped with USB charging stations, a pet area and baby changing stations as well as the “honor bar” snack bar, a throwback to the original terminal that many may remember.

As PRC enters another year with United Express operated through SkyWest Airlines, service directly to Los Angeles and Denver continues. Even with the impacts of COVID-19 and terminal construction in 2020, PRC was able to continue experiencing a great number of enplanements and provide service to customers meeting all guide-

lines. Beginning June 3, United Express will be adding a second daily departure to Denver, bringing PRC to a total of five departures and arrivals Sunday-Friday and three arrivals/departures on Saturdays. Recently, the airport added Boutique Airlines service options for travelers as well. Boutique offers specialty business flights for eight passengers, with direct flights to Phoenix, Sunday through Friday. The expansions at PRC have made the airport truly regional and provide an opportunity for our citizens to easily connect to hundreds of larger flights at the LAX and DEN hubs, while also providing an option for leisure and business travelers alike to easily visit our beautiful and unique hometown.

The success and dedication of staff at PRC has attracted attention from the FAA and has led to many grant opportunities, making funding for the terminal project and future upgrades a reality for the city. Additional signage directing travelers to the new terminal will be added in the coming months

for wayfinding ease and in the future, perimeter security upgrades, runway expansions and pavement preservation will keep the areas surrounding the new terminal as welcoming and up-to-date as the building itself. The changes that have taken place at PRC are reflective of the changes in our community over the years – well thought out, tied to our community’s roots and providing opportunity and positivity for Prescott and our region. I am truly proud of what has been accomplished.

In light of COVID-19 restrictions, a small ribbon cutting took place on March 31, with Prescott City Councilmembers and staff, but the official dedication will not take place until June.

Until that time, I encourage everyone to take the time and visit 6600 Airport Ave., the official new address of the passenger terminal. It is a state-of the-art facility and a wonderful gateway to our community.

Organizers Plan for Hybrid Sedona Film Festival

T

icket packages are on sale for the 27th annual Sedona International Film Festival, a scaled-down hybrid event scheduled for June 12-20.

Pass and ticket package holders will be able to choose from nearly 130 films. Individual tickets will go on sale in early June.

As part of the festival’s effort to ensure health and safety by eliminating waiting lines at theaters, pass holders and individual ticket buyers will be able to choose their seats. Staggered start times will allow filmgoers to move directly to their seats when the doors open.

Festival films will be screened in reduced-capacity theaters, including the Sedona Performing Arts Center (SPAC), Harkins 6 Theaters, the Enchantment Resort and the Mary D. Fisher Theatre, which recently had four new HVAC units installed with NASA-certified air scrubbers. Organizers say strict CDC-designed health and safety protocols will be implemented at every location. Masks will be required and staff and volunteers will have their temperatures taken every day. Northern Arizona Healthcare professionals will be on site to monitor safety protocols and be available to answer questions.

Executive Director Pat Schweiss said that filmmaker workshops will be

offered both on-site, with limited attendance and social distancing in place, and online. A full schedule of workshops will be available this month.

Plans also are being developed for outdoor screenings.

In honor of the 100th anniversary of the American Foundation for the Blind, Schweiss said pieces from the Helen Keller Museum in Tuscumbia, Alabama, including the Academy Award that Keller received at age 75 for the 1955 documentary Helen Keller in Her Story, will be on display in the SPAC lobby.

The festival also has partnered with the world’s first blindDANCE Film Festival. Led by Board President Bari Azman and Executive Director Ben Fox, who is legally blind and a former Sundance filmmaker, the blindDANCE Film Festival team provides opportunities and training in the film industry to those who are blind and visually impaired.

This year also will launch the Sedona International Film Festival Screenplay Competition. Categories include feature screenplays, short screenplays, one-hour TV pilots, half-hour TV pilots and Arizona screenplays. QCBN

We recommend using fresh herbs. This pesto isn’t a pesto unless it’s fresh. Wash and dry the herbs thoroughly. Normally we like to blend, chop or mortar all

the herbs first before adding the olive oil. Especially if you’re using a food processor.

Sometimes blending the oil makes it cloudy like a mayonnaise. We like pesto to be very smooth, so I blend it a long time and then when you’re ready add the olive oil and blend a few pulses to mix it all together or stir it together. Yummo!

It gives it a great texture. This pesto is delicious with pasta, dipping bread and crustini, over pork loin and grilled chicken breasts.

OneAZ is proud to announce that in 2021, the Community Foundation has pledged to award more than $290,000 to help Arizona non-profits. Non-profit organizations that offer programs that align with one of the Foundation pillars are encouraged to apply for a grant.

t was accurately called “the newest airport terminal in the world,” at least for one day.

The $15 million Prescott Regional Airport Terminal (PRC) opened on March 30, with a formal ribbon-cutting commemorating the opening at 3 p.m. on March 31.

The 18,000-square-foot modern building replaces the Ernest A. Love Terminal, which was built 73 years ago.

More than 70 invited guests attended the ceremony where Kristi Miller, airport management analyst, introduced several city and community leaders who had key roles in bringing the new terminal to the community and Yavapai County.

Leading off was Prescott Mayor Greg Mengarelli. He reviewed the importance of an airport in Prescott history, noting that two pioneering ranch families – the Fains from Prescott Valley and the James family from Prescott – were key figures in giving land and support for the then primitive airport in the early days of the 1920s and thereafter.

Mengarelli noted PRC is now praised in Central and Northern Arizona for ushering in commercial air service, with daily non-stop flight service to Denver and to Los Angeles, operated

i, readers – welcome to another edition of At Home With Tom and Sandy. We are here to give you the inside scoop on real estate and the construction industry, what’s up, what’s down, what’s hot and what’s not. We’ll share real estate stats, home prices, building permit numbers, construction pointers and give you hints on renovations that will give you a return on your investment. We will talk about products, how to take care of your home and so much more.

As we all know, there is a lot going on in the housing and construction industry and we want to share some fantastic, cool, groovy and helpful information with you. We are going to use our insight and local expertise to help you save time and money and surmount obstacles of all kinds. So, settle in and enjoy.

Tom: Hello Sandy, our YCCA gal!

Since our radio show together earlier on KYCA this month, I have been giving the topic you chose, “Growth,” renewed thought.

Sandy: I don’t know if that is scary or cool. It is a hot-button issue for sure. There are quite a few subdivisions out there both under construction and on the books.

Tom: I love quoting a great American philosopher, Yogi Berra, “It’s like déjà vu all over again.” As a commu-

nity, we have been through this many times in the past 40+ years that I have been around.

Sandy: Haha, I get it. We keep going through the same sorts of struggles. I have been wondering what people think about the growth in Yavapai County and asking why they are either for or against. Answers cover the spectrum – from traffic and road capacity, open space and water resources – from some folks. Others are happy and love to see the growth and know that we need it to prosper and feel that housing is a good thing.

Tom: This is a great place to live, work and play. Why wouldn’t folks want to move here? You are correct, though, the issues on all sides of the growth question really don’t seem to change. Some of it is perception; some of it is real concern.

Sandy: I feel like I fall into both categories sometimes. I am concerned about road capacity, and before you jump up and down, I am very aware of the CYMPO (Central Yavapai Metropolitan Planning Organization) and the transportation plan in place through 2045 and the fantastic job that CYMPO does in representing Yavapai County. I am just commiserating with the amount of travel traffic I see on the roads. And I must say I smile when I see the construction vehicles on our highway at 6:30 a.m., transporting materials that will be the beautiful home of someone waiting.

Tom: Yes, I get it as well and it feels like a lot of road traffic. I had the opportunity to drive from downtown Prescott to the Navajo Drive area in Prescott Valley. I timed it in the early afternoon, at about 1:30 p.m. It took me almost 20 minutes. I was surprised that was all it took.

Sandy: The CYMPO plan identified that 80% to 100% of people in the Prescott area have less than a 30-minute commute. For the PV folks who live near Glassford or Viewpoint, that number is 60% to 100%.

Tom: I think you hit the nail on the head. Perception of what growth impacts are can really drive the conversation. There are many smart people on the local government staff, volunteers and elected officials who are spending a great deal of time trying to make sure that growth happens smartly.

Sandy: I serve on two Planning and Zoning commissions and can concur with that wholeheartedly.

There are exceptions, though.

Tom: Oh, yes! There will always be those who get into a position and let a little bit of their ability to influence go to their head. These folks tend to cause more problems than they solve. They usually don’t last long in that position though.

Sandy: I agree with that as well.

But, back to growth. How do we address issues of perception? There are those of us who try to get out facts and discuss mitigation efforts, only to be dismissed out of hand.

Tom: That’s frustrating for all involved. Some people really do the research and ask great questions. Others just want to dump their frustrations out on you.

Sandy: Taking the time to understand the issues and what is being done about them is something I wish more folks would do. I think a recent example of what seems to be a great planning process has taken place with AED and the Save the Dells folks. Both sides have taken the time to sit down and really deliberate the issues, each compromising to arrive at a solution all could live with and a benefit that is

great for our area.

Tom: You bring up a great example of organized parties coming together. As you know, our local zoning laws regarding development all strive to have the parties involved or affected engage with each other before coming to the governmental table.

Sandy: Tom, to say 2020 was a year of surprises is an extreme understatement. What started off as a bright year for the housing market and the economy was soon derailed by a global pandemic. We are now seeing a sharp economic incline in housing with decade-plus high prices.

Tom: From everything I have read, the economists are expecting housing’s winning streak to continue through 2021. New construction of single-family homes is expected to grow this year. The median price ($349,400) is 5.3% over the median price posted a year earlier. Even though new home prices are rising because of increases in lumber prices, the lack of existing homes for sale means new construction is the only option for some prospective homebuyers.

Mosquitoes, Flies, Spiders are No Match for These Plants

hen it comes to the inevitable face-off between you and bugs, keeping them away from your immediate vicinity is a top priority. There are pesticides and bug traps, but plants can reduce the need for so many chemicals around the patio.

Plants are in the business of repelling insects as a natural way of defending themselves. They also need insects to perform cross-pollination so they can survive. It is an arms race between plants and insects, each trying to survive and prosper.

We rounded up the plants local gardeners use to repel bugs, not just in the garden, but around the BBQ and patios as well. Their unique properties send pests in other directions while simultaneously sprucing up your gardens.

LEMONGRASS

Lemongrass is a tall grass native to tropical climates of Asia. It looks a lot like citronella grass and also has similar mosquito-fighting properties. Scientific reviews found lemongrass oil protected 95% against mosquitoes. Another study found the oil can deter stable flies in a lab setting. It also works in gardens.

MINT

Many repellents contain essential mint oil. Another hack to consider is combining 10 drops of peppermint, thyme and rosemary essential oils mixed with water in a spray bottle. Spritz the solution around your garden to repel flies, fleas, mosquitoes, aphids, ants, spiders, chiggers and more. A similar effect is found by hosing these herbal plants down to release the scent around the patio.

CATNIP

Catnip is known for its ability to give your feline friends a mellow buzz and has the same mellowing effect on bugs.

One study found the essential oil from catnip can help deter houseflies and mosquitoes. Another study from Iowa State University found catnip oil to be a more effective “spatial repellent” than DEET, the most popular ingredient in insect repellents. Catnip oil isn’t the same as a catnip plant, but the results are promising enough to warrant adding a few to your yard.

SAGE

This herb has a reputation for getting rid of ants, flies and mosquitoes. The research found that having a pot of sage around can offer up to 32% protection against mosquitoes. That’s 32% more

Marigolds contain pyrethrum, an insecticidal compound that’s used in bug repellents. There isn’t a ton of research on the effects of marigolds on insects. Still, gardeners have long sworn by them to keep annoying pests like mosquitoes and destructive nematodes away. The stunning pompom blooms are gorgeous, with a smell bugs just don’t like. Try using them to create a pretty border around patios or place potted marigolds near entryways and windows.

ROSEMARY

This spiky herb, thanks to its particularly pungent scent, helps keep mosquitoes away. The research found when compared to 11 other essential oils, rosemary had the most protracted repellent effects on mosquitoes, while

Basil knocks down and kills certain types of mosquitoes. This most popular garden herb produces a repellent odor that mosquitoes just don’t like.

We know that planting these desirable garden plants around your deck, patio and BBQ areas reduces insect activity.

This is especially true when wetting down the foliage just before using these areas to release their essential oils.

Standing water should be removed or changed often, as mosquitoes breed in just an inch of stagnant water.

National Motorcycle Racers Compete to Represent America’s Best

n April 17 and 18, our nation’s best off-road endurance motorcycle racers came to the area outside of Williamson Valley known as Camp Wood in the Prescott National Forest to the rockand boulder-strewn trails for the 2021 Annual AMA RJ Russo Camp Wood Enduro.

The event began in 2006, and this year, the American Motorcycle Association (AMA) recognized it as a qualifier for competitors seeking to earn a prestigious spot on the U.S. team, representing the United States at the 95th International Six Day Enduro in Rivanazzano, Italy.

Arizona’s top motorcycle athletes began arriving early Friday. Little Dealer Little Prices RV in Prescott Valley provided campers with propane and other necessities before they set up camp in the beautiful forest pines.

Saturday started off with the first-ever kids racing activity in which boys and girls as young as 5 years old competed on a special course made just for them. Categories were broken

down by age and bike size, with many kids racing the all-new electric motorcycles.

The big bikes were up next and the talent on the starting line was chockfull of notables like AMA National Champion Axel Pearson of Pioche, Nevada. Max Gerston drove up from Scottsdale and was 2019 AMA National Champion and the 2019 AMA Rough Rider 100 Champion, a race that took place on the Fain Ranch in Prescott Valley. Also in the line-up was Travis Epperson of Prescott, who, when not a full-time fireman in Prescott, was also a contender for the AMA national championship. The deck was stacked, and it was anyone’s race to win.

After a minute of silence to remember our fallen friends from this past year, the racers were released to begin their odyssey over what is described as the most brutal terrain for motorcycle racing in all of Arizona. The event is broken down into five test sections, joined together by “transitions” (think of a golf course, where you hop in your cart and drive up the path or “transition” to the hole to tee off or “test”). The lengths are

unknown and widely varied in terrain and toughness. Novice riders attempt to complete all the tests, once a day.

Amateurs and professionals ride the tests two times per day.

“I had a blast dancing through rocks all weekend and saw some incredible country,” said Gerston.

“ATR did an incredible job putting on the event. The trails were perfect, even trimmed back the bushes.

Stoked to get the overall for the weekend.”

“I have never been to Prescott, Arizona, so the terrain was rockier than I had expected!” said Pearson. “I was able to win three tests outright and four tests LOI (qualifying riders) but test three and six kicked my butt! I had a small mishap and smashed my foot between a big rock and my foot peg. I was hurting for a bit. Just wish I would have manned up and pushed harder to the end of the test! My second time through this test I had a few spots where lappers were stuck and had to push my bike up a hill and it hurt my overall time. I started the [second] day by making some small suspension adjustments for the rocks and focused on putting solid tests in

on Saturday, but Sunday I rode decently and more importantly had a great time trying not to let Nick catch me in the timed sections,” said Epperson. “It was a blast. I saw some old friends. I stoked that old fire a little bit. Christian Berry, president of the Northern Arizona Blues Alliance, recently performed outdoors at Mogollon Vineyards in Dewey, with tables socially distanced. He is scheduled to play from 1-5 p.m., Saturday, July 3, at A.C. Williams Granite Creek Park in Prescott, and Sunday, July 4, at a mini festival at Alcantara Vineyards in Cottonwood. But the guitarist is most excited about the First Annual Greater Prescott Valley Blues Festival, planned for Saturday, May 22, at the Prescott Valley Amphitheater.

When the pandemic struck last year, Berry was scheduled to perform at Cliff Castle Casino, and that was canceled. He, like so many musicians, experienced the dramatic drop in business as venues were closed.

Some were in the middle of tours when everything stopped. He said some musicians became creative. For example, Taj Mahal booked his band into a theater and sold tickets for the online show.

Berry was able to continue with some solo performances and some duo gigs with friend Paul Epoch on harmonica. The duo is known as the Swamp Poets. “As long as everybody is safe, people need to have their music outlet,” he said. “It’s an integral part of everybody’s life.”

Darryl Porras, lead singer and

guitarist with Big Daddy D and the Dynamites, performed recently at The Route 66 Roadhouse Bar and Grill in Bellemont and Windsock in Prescott. Porras plays at the Blues Jam that the Roadhouse offers every two weeks. He said the Prescott area has been quicker to open music venues than the Flagstaff area and is looking forward to the Prescott Valley Blues Festival this month.“We have a lot of followers who love live music,” said Porras. “It’s nice to see people you haven’t seen for a while.

Everybody’s glad to be back.”

Hall says he will be hitting all three blues jams – at The Windsock, the Roadhouse and the Old Corral Bar in Cornville. “I think it’s huge when we’re able to have shows because we’ve been pushing up against whatever limits were in place. People are clamoring for music,” he said.

“I expect great turnouts when the pandemic is under control.”

Musicians applaud Arizona’s bars that follow safety protocols, including masking, social distancing and seating capacity. “People didn’t realize how much was on the line for the clubs if they were caught breaking protocols,” said Porras. “I felt safe because the safety protocols were followed. Regardless of your perspective, you have to follow the rules.”

e are really ready for spring and summer this year! What a year we have had dealing with the pandemic and all its ramifications. Every spring feels like a renewal, a fresh start, but this year, it is amplified. People who have been mostly home are venturing out, youth sports teams are back up and running, many businesses are back to some semblance of normalcy and, of course, the trees and flowers are blooming. The weather is getting nicer and it just feels good!

People are getting ready to start traveling and looking for the best places to stay. Vacation rentals are so popular, but unless you have a management company handling all of the details, owning a vacation rental can be more than a new owner bargained for. Here are some things to consider when preparing your vacation rental for the upcoming busy season.

Update where you can on the inside and choose quality furniture and a simple, traditional design. Subtle local art that shows off the beauty of the area is a plus and can enhance the feeling of “getting away from it all” for your guests. Keep it simple and don’t clutter up the rooms and walking areas with too much furniture or too many knickknacks.

Make sure that the house has been deepcleaned and sanitized before the busy season.

Take advantage of the experience and professionalism of a company that knows what needs to be done and how to do tasks such as making sure that the insides of all the cabinets and drawers, fridge, oven and closets are

clean and tidy. The picture frames, baseboards, doors and doorframes, as well as light fixtures, fans and blinds should all be cleaned with a damp cloth. Disinfect all cabinet handles, light switches, door handles, bathroom and kitchen fixtures so that you and your guests are confident that your vacation home is clean and safe.

Make the windows sparkle. If you are not great at this, hire a professional. People want to have a crystal clear view of why they came to our beautiful area.

Dust, dirt and streaks give an immediate negative impression. Clean sills and tracks are important so that the windows open and close properly.

Outside, the yards should be simple and manicured, free of debris, trash, weeds and overgrowth. Cover your barbeque with an appropriate cover and make sure the patio furniture is wiped off and clean. The outside of the property is the first impression when your guests drive up.

Take great pictures that emphasize the strengths of your property, including views and amenities. Also, remember to arrange your pictures in a way that helps a potential guest visualize the layout of the house.

When people leave reviews, the most common topics are cleanliness and comfort. Keep this in mind when planning your budget and to-do list for getting the house ready for a vacation rental.

Assessing the Residential Real Estate Market

H

omes for sale nationally are down 52% over the same time last year and in Arizona, there was a 64% decrease in inventory over last year. Demand is up as potential buyers re-evaluate their priorities in homes and lifestyle during and after the pandemic. There are four offers for every listing and intense competition has led to double-digit price growth according to the National Association of Realtors. Absorption rate measures how fast we would sell out of the current homes on the market if no new listings were added, and we are under one month in Prescott and the Quad Cities. The list price has become the starting price as buyers bid over market and financed offers struggle to compete with all cash offers. Speculation abounds about another bubble to burst, so let’s look at the fundamentals of this market.

Migration to Arizona has been strong and it lands in the Top Five on UHAUL’s migration growth list.

Buyers in our area have been able to sell homes in more expensive areas and can afford to pay cash about 50% of the time. Baby Boomers are very attracted to the Quad Cities area, while the Millennials are edging them out to be the largest homebuying demographic

in our state and nationwide.

Nationally, there have been 13 straight years of below-average building of new homes. We have not made up for or matched the pace of building during the last boom. We do need to build more homes to increase the supply, but it won’t be done fast enough to be the complete solution. Shortages in skilled labor, increases in the costs of building supplies and the length of the entitlement process contribute to how quickly developers can add supply to the market. The National Association of Realtors posits that to get back to a six-month healthy supply of inventory, an additional 2.7 million homes should be on the market for sale.

There is a foreclosure moratorium in place until June 30, and whether that will be extended is a subject of much discussion. There are about four million borrowers behind on their mortgage payments, but banks are working with many to add overdue payments to the end of their loan. Borrowers that can’t qualify for this type of loan restructure likely will be able to sell their homes at a profit, as equity has climbed in the past few years. As more of these homes come on the market and as vaccines ease sellers’ hesitancy to have buyers visit their homes, we do expect a balancing of supply and demand to occur.

How does a buyer succeed in this market? One way is to have a strong local agent on your side as sales do occur prior to hitting the general market.

Know what you are looking for and be prepared to look at a home quickly and decide whether to place an offer. Buyers in a competitive market need to go in strong and fast to not miss an opportunity. Get advice on the risks in waiving home inspections and appraisals as

ways to sweeten the deal. Too much sweet can promote different aches and pains in the process, and a skilled agent can help you cap your risk.

If you are a seller, the highest offer is not always the best offer. An experienced agent can be your best asset in negotiation during a market that moves fast. This professional can help you weigh which offer is most likely to get to closing date and this can be absolute-

ly critical if your next home purchase relies on the sale of your current home.

Sound Check Live entertainment venues test demand; some concerts have limited capacity

usic and dancing has returned to the Quad Cities area and is starting to return to the Flagstaff area, with a lot more planned for May. The scheduling of more live music gives musicians, venue owners and customers hope for the future.

Prescott area venues never totally shut down the music during the pandemic, but solos or duos were playing instead of bands, and there was no dancing on the dance floor, per the safety protocols in place.

Sidekicks Lounge in Prescott Valley and Jersey Lilly on the square in Prescott are just two places where the owners are thrilled to be in the process of bringing music back to normal levels. Other entertainment venues, like the Highlands Center for Natural History, are also bringing back music.

The Northern Arizona Blues Alliance will host the first annual Greater Prescott Valley Blues Festival in the Prescott Valley Amphitheater from 1-9 p.m., Saturday, May 22. The lineup includes national acts such as Kat Riggs and Jimmy Carpenter, as well as local

performers Ray DeSylvester, Leon J, Dr. Bob Sellani, Christian Berry, Paul Epoch, Tommy Dukes, Darryl Poras and Sir Harrison.

Mortimer Farms in Dewey has scheduled its Friday Night Barn Dance and dinner from May 7 to Oct. 30.

The Highlands Center for Natural History has scheduled its monthly concert series starting May 28, starting with Art Podell, one of the original musicians with the New Christie Minstrels. The Acoustic Eidolon duo will perform July 2. Prescott folk band Ponderosa Grove will perform July 24.

Shakespeare in the Pines is scheduled during the middle two weeks in August and Acoustic Blues is on the calendar for Sept. 24.

Folk Sessions at the Highlands Center for Natural History has its ninth annual Americana Music Fest set for July 22, featuring “Southwestern Americana,” tales of Nancy Elliot, the Robby Robertson Trio and the Valley’s Hambone. Concert host Highlands Center Marketing and Communications Coordinator Tom Agostino said the pandemic impacted the center quite a bit. “We had to cancel our summer

series last year,” he said.

This season, they will sell 70 tickets for each show, as compared to 120 for each show before the pandemic.

Laura Lee Morgan, who, with her husband, John, owns Sidekicks Saloon in Prescott Valley, said the community needs live music because people thrive on interaction. “It was depressing not having it,” she said. “It’s great having it back. That’s why we’re in the business.”

Jersey Lilly Saloon owner Josh Makrauer says that although the past

year has been difficult, as the venue lost about 50% of its business, he is excited to be able to provide some fun music for the patrons.

Sidekicks has live bands every Saturday and karaoke on Friday and Sunday nights. The schedule for Saturdays in May has Parker Jenkins on May 8, Shake of Yesterday on May 15, Hit Squad on May 22 and Honey Girl on May 29.

Jersey Lilly has music almost every night. Sky performs every Tuesday,

Little Larry every Thursday and there are jam sessions every Wednesday.

Bands perform every weekend, with Hit Squad the first weekend in May, Combo Deluxe the second weekend in May, Little Larry and the Drive the third weekend in May, the Tone Kings the fourth weekend in May and Well Dressed Wolves the last weekend in May. Weekend shows are from 7-10 p.m.; weekday shows 8-10 p.m., and Sunday solos perform from 4-7 p.m.

According to the World Health Organization (WHO), noted in an FIC April 12 press release, “As many as one in six U.S. children ages 6-17 has a treatable mental health condition such as depression, anxiety problems or attention deficit/hyperactivity disorder (ADHD).”

Another WHO statistic states, “Half of all mental health conditions start by 14 years of age but most cases are undetected and untreated.”

“One reason we’re really working to get the word out about children’s mental health is many parents don’t know that free help is available,” Kallal said. “Our goal is to raise community awareness about how common children’s mental health challenges are in the United States, while also reducing the stigma of mental illness.”

She added that Children’s Mental Health Awareness Week is a “chance to change the perceptions around mental health, as well as recognize children’s uniqueness, rather than the characteristics associated with their disability, diagnosis or illness.

In addition, she says, the consequences of not addressing adolescent mental health issues extend into adulthood, limiting opportunities for adults to lead fulfilling lives.

The Family Involvement Center, a

board composed of at least 51% parents who have raised children with unique challenges, governs FIC. Staff members also are primarily parents who have experience navigating services and supports that aid families in need.

Services at FIC include help coordinating with child-serving systems such as schools, assistance with life skills like employment and housing, providing parent peer support programs, counseling for adults and other family members, and offering respite services as breaks for parents and caregivers.

“We are there to help them navigate to get the needed resources and formal and informal supports in their communities,” Kallal said.

FIC also presents a wide variety of youth support services, including mentoring and after-school programs to build skills and cultivate healthy relationships.

The Reid Park Zoo has more than 350 animals in lush natural habitats and was founded in 1967 on 24 acres that are owned by the City of Tucson.

It is a non-profit located within Reid Park and includes two fascinating aviaries, Flight Connection and South American.

“The zoo is home to animals from around the world, including from Africa and South America,” said Deborah Carr, director of marketing and events at the zoo. “We have a lot of new animals this year, like the African painted

dogs. They’re a lot of fun. We have a pack of four sisters, each 2 years old.

We also just opened a new Flamingo Lagoon, an expanded space with sparkling features, which houses the zoo’s flock of 26 Chilean flamingos. They’re among the most colorful animals at the zoo, with their deep coral feathers.”

There is also a baby African elephant, Penzi, who reportedly loves cucumbers, crushing boxes and rolling in the dirt.

The zoo focuses on conservation, education and connecting people with the natural world Mortimer Farms is celebrating its 11th anniversary and is located on 324 acres, 60 acres of which are open to the public.

The grounds include a barn and country store, and farm-inspired rides, games and activities.

“We have miniature horses, calves, donkeys, goats, sheep, bunnies, chickens, ducks – lots of animals to feed, pet and hang out with,” said Ashlee Mortimer, who is the chief marketing officer at the farm. “It’s super fun to have that animal interaction with guests. In May, we’ll have quite a few babies. I love spring and all the babies that come along with it.”

The farm has about 40 varieties of vegetables growing at various times.

“Guests can come out and pick all day in the fields, whatever is available,” she said. “Right now, we are picking

asparagus and cilantro. In a few weeks, depending on the weather, we should have strawberries.”

The Agua Fria River borders one side of the long, narrow farm A grassy, shaded area will be available for families, who will also be given free box lunches.

“The event is held outside over several acres to allow for distancing of participants,” said Trisha Riner, who is FIC regional director for Northern Arizona.

There will also be volunteers on hand to help people enroll in AHCCCS if they don’t have health care and need assistance completing paperwork or are

missing documents.

Attendance is limited for both events and families must register in advance.

The business building blocks she had created during the preceding months served her well. She had paid close attention to predictions of an upcoming recession and consulted with a business mentor to address potential impacts.

“I wanted to make sure that there was a low barrier to entry for anyone who might become unemployed and need an inspiring place to take their side-gig full time,” she explained. “I adjusted my lowest membership price point to basically match the cost of a daily cup of coffee.

And to make it even better, we provided complimentary, premium, locally roasted coffee for our members. This resulted in a growing number of flex desk members right away.”

Banayat had decided by the end of her first year to lease an additional 1,500 square feet for five more offices and nine dedicated desks. She says the expansion was a blessing when the lockdown spiked demand. ”Just like every other business owner that was hit hard worldwide, I was scrambling to figure out how to pivot, and how to negotiate with my landlord and service providers, and fill out paperwork for business loans, all while still operating my business, communicating with my remaining members, and doing my best to keep my cool,” she explained.

By August 2020, all of her offices and dedicated desks filled up. New members included relocated residents seeking temporary offices, corporate employees escaping the distractions and isolation of home offices and working parents seeking respite.

“Strangely enough, some good things have come out of the chaos of 2020,” Banayat said. “Being able to live and work in a geographic location that could improve the quality of life for millions just may be the silver lining

that so many have desired. Companies are more readily providing home office stipends as a fringe benefit. Coworking spaces that used to attract mostly entrepreneurs, small businesses and freelancers are now seeing a swath of remote employees.”

to Los Angles and was recruited by Peter Ueberroth to help identify and train staff to work at 27 different sites for the 1984 Summer Olympics. It was there that he met his future wife, Melinda. They have been married for 32 years.

In 1985, the Kirchgrabers became involved in international efforts again. He worked for the Peace Corps in Somalia on the border of Ethiopia and then worked with several non-governmental organizations (NGOs): Médecins Sans Frontieres, United Nations High Commission for Refugees, Red Crescent Society (equivalent of the Red Cross) and several other healthcare groups.

Upon returning to the United States, Kirchgraber accepted a teaching position in social work at California State Long Beach and, later, the University of Southern California.

“We see a lot of children,” said Quigley. “A lot of the treatments we do for them makes such a difference in their life. It’s very rewarding to close a palate or lip, or help them with an issue with a hand, like a webbed hand, or too many fingers.”

The practice also has allowed the doctors to participate in medical missions, often with a team of other local physicians and healthcare professionals, sometimes after a natural disaster and usually in less than sterile conditions.

“It gives you that skillset to go to other countries like Brazil, Haiti and Mexico and treat patients there. A good part of it is training the locals to do some of the procedures on their own. When you can go back to a country several times, it’s neat to see patients you treated earlier,” said Quigley.

OPERATING ON A HANDSHAKE

The surgeons started their partnership with a handshake. Now, Plastic Surgeons of Northern Arizona operates three offices in Flagstaff and Sedona, including Northern Arizona SurgiCenter and The Hand Center of Northern Arizona. “We didn’t know what the heck we were doing,” said Lex. “It was scary. They don’t teach us a lot about business in medical school and residency.”

“Jack and Steve were pioneers in this regard,” said PSNA Administrator Steve Schwartz, who joined PSNA within a week of its opening. “Their bold and successful venture clearly impacted the way health care has been delivered in Northern Arizona over the past decades, in a very positive way.”

The doctors have enjoyed a steady practice of challenges together outside of the operating room, too. “We start-

ed hiking and doing some kayaking,” said Quigley. “Mostly at this point, we do mountain bike trips, a lot of trips over the San Juan mountain area through Silverton Mountain passes.

Recently, we’ve been doing Arizona Trail trips. We just finished the Flagstaff to Payson stretch in October.

Ironically, we do more talking about the business on those trips than in the office.”

“Even though we share the office, we’re so busy, we hardly get a chance to talk,” said Lex. “So, on the trips to mountain bike rides, we find it’s a good time for prolonged business meetings. It gives us a chance for visioning for the future.”

Good friends before the practice and good friends through the years, the surgeons have raised their families in Flagstaff, fully integrating their busy schedules with active outdoor lifestyles. Both couples, Dr. Lex and his wife, Lisa, and Dr. Quigley and his wife, Janean, have had four children.

GUIDED BY A MANTRA

When making business decisions, the doctors say they have been guided by this simple mantra: “Do whatever is best for the patients.”

These days, Lex and Quigley believe what’s best for their current and future patients is to fortify their practice with additional talent. Adam Boettcher, M.D., joined PSNA in 2012. Jeffrey Gibbs, M.D., joined last summer. “They’re going to be the new guard in a few years, but with them taking a lot of the calls, we’re happy to hang around to make a nice transition,” said Lex. “Both in our surgery center and in our office we’ve been extremely lucky to have excellent and loyal employees who have stayed with us through the years,” said Quigley. By streamlining the procurement-to-payment process, Forager’s online and mobile platform saves time and costs for grocers, co-ops, farmers, producers and other buyers and sellers of local food.

“For supermarkets, the platform is intuitive, easy to use, and cost effective,” Blunda said. “It allows operations to quickly scale without being hung up on manual processes that can stop local programs from growing.”

He added that farmers can seamlessly connect with suppliers and manage all transactions “so they can go back to their trade without having to worry about the back-end business.”

The new effort with Bashas’ is a pilot program for Forager.

“The launch phase of our relationship is certainly an opportunity for both Bashas’ and Forager to confirm that our partnership will truly drive the evolution of local at Bashas’ that we are both excited to achieve,” said Blunda. “We are both very confident of success, but testing and refining our approach before we scale across their full store footprint is vital.”

So far, local suppliers have been happy with the addition of the Forager process to Bashas’ grocery outlets.

“Absolutely. We are getting a lot of positive feedback and the local suppliers are finding the process much easier than going at it alone,” Mayer said. “In addition, many suppliers are excited because we are actively seeking them out for our stores.” QCBN
