Along with the graduates from South Bank campus in Brisbane, this catalogue includes work by the second cohort of students graduating with a Bachelor of Design degree from Griffith University Queensland College of Art who have completed their studies in Hong Kong.

Both Griffith University Queensland College of Art and the School of Continuing and Professional Studies of the Chinese University of Hong Kong have worked together closely to ensure the success of this venture, which offers Hong Kong students the opportunity to gain a Griffith University degree in design without incurring the extra costs associated with living overseas. The content is delivered by the same academic staff that teach the courses in Australia, thus providing students with an international perspective on design as well as ensuring consistency in quality of outcomes.

Because the program is taught using an intensive mode of delivery it demands a major commitment of time and energy from the students. I congratulate all the graduates on their dedication in successfully completing the program. They should be proud of their achievement and I offer them my best wishes for their future careers.

OH YES! OH NO! OH YES! OR HOW TO START_ _ _ _ _ _ _?!

For students, the end of universit y study is an extremely important point in life.

On one hand it marks a big achievement and a new start of an exciting journey. It is full of expectati ons, dreams, wishes, promises and plans. On the other hand it is a step in to the unknown. An uncertain ty.

The creative industries has it’s own expectations of this phase too. How good are the students, how interesting are they, how dedicate d and how hard will they be able to work? What new know ledge as a result of their education can they bring in to our business?

How can I find the best student to work with?

Of course expectations are high on both sides. It is an interesting relationship espe cially because their relationship is mediated by the imag e.

OH YES!

Visual communication as an expe rt field of design could not have dreamt about bett er times. The industry in many aspects is boom ing, the number of images to be produced and are demanded by the market is growing rapidly. The number of designers who are able to produce images is bigger than ever. The influence of visual communication on culture, society, economy and technology is stronger than ever.

Creative industries — the part of the economy that deals with the production of ideas, concepts, knowledge and information is getti ng big support by the local and federal governments . Designers engaged in visual communication are an important part of this economy. As cultural producers, as cultural intermediaries they help shape our reality, they create the visual language of our culture. For the designer this is a very privilege d position and a position of power.

OH NO!

Our culture has become visual in a way where people’s interactions turned in to a medium for the perversive operations of a cons umption driven interactive networked spectacle.

Visual communication is used mainly for imposing a consensus about happiness, success and meaning.

Many designers are mastering skills, but do not develop in-depth research, concepts or contextual relationships to the world and they have no or almost no theoretical knowledge. The profession is reproducing a decontextualized understanding of visual communication and an understanding of university education as a preparation for a cool service instead of a process that demands hard intellectual engagement.

Criteria of what is good visual communication in the industry are very vague. The framework of evaluation is very narrow and limiting, because the focus is put on the image without its cultural, social, political implications. Paradoxically, the profession is without a real understanding of the complex communicative aspects of visual communication.

A growing percentage of visual communicators work in precarious conditions: contract and project based.

This means without real social and health security, without the ability to make serious plans for the future and with a 24/7 working time, because they are always on the search for a new business opportunity in order to survive. Advertising agencies and design studios operate more and more as controlling mediators between clients and an outside network of precarious creative workers instead as organisations with a inhouse expertise and a stable team of intellectually and creatively collaborating experts. Research shows that the majority of the creative workers in the communication industry have a hard time finding deeper meaning in their daily work.

The qualitative level of visual communication provided by the skills based industry actors can be also provided by many creative people who don’t have a formal design education because these skills are not anymore that difficult to acquire.

Most of the effects of public visual communication are very poor, but clients have to rely on the service providers because communication is not their area of expertise. If the bigger part of the industry won’t change, there soon will be no economic and ethical justification for its existence.

In such conditions visual communicators tends to create problems instead of solving them.

Stencils in use I placed a dislike button on the McDonalds till. Because it was facing the customers and not the employers it was still placed there when I came by one hour later. It was taken down the next day, but in the few hours it was hanging there it got exposed to hundreds of costumers.

Occupy Mono After research into the supporting visual language that was developing alongside the movement, it was clear there was a great lack of cohesion and quality in the messages being communicated. A monospaced, display typeface was developed as an offering towards a visual common ground for the occupiers. The movement’s diversity is of course one of it’s central strengths and characteristics, so the typeface is not intended as a kind of brand homogenisation, rather one of the many supporting voices and similar to a visual equivalent of the unifying verbal devices used by the occupier’s, such as their very nomenclature (Occupy New York, Occupy Brisbane etc) and slogans like “we are the 99%”.

OH YES!

Even in this times of radical uncertainty it is clearly possible to define good visual communication work. In broad terms it is work that is excellent in quality, socially responsible and meaningful for the practitioner. A good communicator uses visual language to create cultural interfaces that will lead us to situations of dialogue and relations of trust and collaboration. This is an inevitable necessity if design wants to become relevant because, like it or not, we are all already deeply in the process of redefining our social, cultural, economic and ecologic environment and dialogue is a key condition for increasing our understanding of multiple perspectives and creating myriad possibilities.

It is exciting times because we have the opportunity to make really a significant impact.

For this impact education is crucial. The visual communication program at Queensland College of Arts is strongly committed to be an international leader in the process of change. Our students have been encouraged to think, research, question, reflect, critique and lead. They have received an extensive training in all necessary skills of course but the key is that they had the opportunity to engage in critical interdisciplinary knowledge that has the potential to make visual communication really relevant.

I would like to wish the best of luck and a good new start to the students and the industry in this important and exciting time.

Cheyanne Proud argues that parents who strongly promote the importance of honesty still tell ‘white lies’ to their children to benefit themselves. She believes parents should think through these issues and consider other options. She has created a polygraph machine and accompanying materials to convince parents not to lie to their children.

Socially responsive advertising is a new communication approach that connects commercial benefit with social responsibility. Connecting the appeal of the Lego product with a social message Veronica Cheung argues that children spend too much time with technology instead with their parents. This message positively reinforces the commercial Lego brand while adding a communication surplus, which is relevant to consumers of Lego as well as to the wider society.

We’re not loving it Cassandra Salatas uses semiotic conflict to publicly talk back to McDonald’s in her neighbourhood — Annerley in Brisbane.

Cassandra’s research showed that the majority of trash lying in the streets comes from the burger clown. In this campaign she uses the corporations very own language and through the changes of it’s meaning Cassandra launches a critique that benefits her local community.

“My main goal is bringing innovative ideas into real products to shape a better world. I am interested in the design process throughout from sketching conceptual ideas on paper to manufacturing processes.I would like to combine my language, communication and design skills to help build on connections between the design workplace and manufacturers.

“I am starting work as a Junior Industrial Designer with a great company when I graduate.

The job interview was an unforgettable experience as I realised I was being respected as a designer, even though I was the interviewee. I am going on a trip to visit the company’s manufacturing plants overseas and am looking forward to carrying on learning while I develop my career as an industrial designer.”

“I aim to design more than just a product, but to design the experience which people will have with it. Nothing is more satisfying than to create objects that connect to people at an emotional level.

“My style is minimalistic and understated; the designs are deeply inspired by culture and are executed in a current and modern aesthetics. I am passionate about craftsmanship and using high quality materials, utilising the local manufacturers where possible to produce valuable products that will stand the test of time.

“I came into the university with such a narrow mind and the courses throughout the 3 years have really widened my horizons. What I found most valuable and refreshing was that the emphasis is not at all on the final product, but the process and strategies of getting there. Through continuous and constant practice, design has now become intuitive. I am applying to continue my study interests at QCA with an MAVA in Product Design. ” Justin Yang Jessica Shipard “I love to apply my skills to almost any design challenge, from street furniture to sunglasses. I am a research freak with strong attention to detail, which I apply to every step of the design process, including target market, branding, CAD modeling, manufacture and packaging. My biggest aim is to creatively and fearlessly push the boundaries and let my Australian identity positive influence my designs.

“My highlight 2011 was interning for the multi-disciplinary design studio of Alexander Lotersztain; Derlot. I worked on projects as diverse as extending the range of Derlot’s street furniture design ‘Haus’, to include a cast concrete and rotationally moulded plastic versions and designing toys for the fair-trade non-for-profit organisation ‘ProPueblo’ in Ecuador.

“I have also loved conceptualizing and launching my own label ‘COLONY’ — colonycollective.com with sunglasses handcrafted by Roger Henley and digitally printed silk scarves, in collaboration with Tessa Fox and printed and sewn by Think Positive in Sydney.”
