WHAT IS DESIGN?

When asked to define what design is, we have a number of options. We can start by describing the ‘things’ that designers make: websites, logos, picture books, posters, chairs, interactive games, interior spaces, 3D objects, virtual environments, and so forth. When we describe design in terms of artefacts, we start to think of specialised knowledge and specific design professions: visual communication design, interior design, industrial design, product design.

However, when we start to think of design as a ‘process’, those differentiations disappear and we start to see a commonality of approach: investigation, iteration, experimentation, prototyping, development, refinement, production, evaluation. From divergence through to convergence, analysis to synthesis, critical to applied, all designers at a fundamental level undergo a similar process of understanding and scoping a problem, ultimately creating a solution that, to use Herbert Simon’s terminology, ‘satisfices’ the situation or turns an ‘existing situation’ into a ‘preferred one’.1 We now accept this approach as the essence of what is commonly described as ‘design thinking’.

In recent times, we have added to the idea of design as a process and the making of things the understanding that design is also about creating ‘experiences’. This new understanding places design at the centre of almost everything humans do. It also allows us to see that design is about social innovation and human well-being. But we must never forget that human wellbeing also requires designers to be focused on the well-being of our planet. And that is why designers, in what we now refer to as the post-industrial world, must question everything.

And so too our graduates, our next generation of thinkers, doers, and social innovators. The projects on show in this final year exhibition will demonstrate much of what has been described here. You will see design thinking in action. You will see the solution-focused outcomes of inquiries into all sorts of issues affecting human beings. You will also see evidence of the design process, the drawings, written notes, and sketches that all demonstrate the embryonic and developing thinking behind ideas. You will see what we mean by ‘controlled chaos’. Through reflection, we can gain explicit understanding into this seemingly tacit, chaotic, mysterious, and unfathomable creative process; it is the process that gives birth to great design.

Having learnt the critical framework of the designed world and the designing futures we create, I feel I’m ready to tackle world issues and integrate good, enriching design into the lives of many.

BEN GWYN PRODUCT DESIGN nif Fins 2017 moulding 12 x 11.4 x 0.6cm

nif Fins is a project that originally focused on creating surf board fins using carbon fibre 3D printing, creating a strong fin that could easily be modified. The design intent then shifted to fit a new brief, exploring the shape of the fin, and how to make the fin aesthetically different from any current fin, while also including aspects in the designs to connect the product to the ocean. 3D printed moulds helped to create a prototype.

During my studies at QCA, I took an interest in sustainably sourced timber furniture and products, focusing on where timber comes from, how it is sourced, and where it will end up when it is no longer needed or wanted. I have worked on breaking down the misconception that new timber is better, and instead repurposed timber that has been cut down for construction and also recycled broken furniture or damaged timber.

I am a designer irretrievably lost to the pursuit of creation, invention, and problem-solving. My projects contain and often combine elements of digital fabrication, traditional fabrication, electronics, and programming. A fascination with human nature, technology, and the future drives me to create thoughtful products that awaken the imagination.

This was a project completed for a class where we were asked to make our own brief and fulfill it.

The brief I made was to develop a wearable bit of costume that was a helmet for a sci-fi film, with goals being that it was motorised and functional. I developed concepts for the character, the environment, and started modelling.

Shapeways printed the final helmet, Arduino made it move, and I used spray pack and model paint to complete it.

This piece was the technical drawing for the re-fit of an art shop into a new retail space—a juice bar and bookshop.

The timber joinery detailing is the main feature and allows for both separation of the two spaces as well as continuity and flow. This retail space will benefit the students of QCA Southbank and provide a space where students can relax or socialise while still being within the learning environment.

The Contained Sanctuary is based on the ideology of living with a smaller footprint, while still providing ample room for a family. The sustainable home is 200m2 in total, featuring 60m2 of outdoor living areas, including an outdoor shower.

The foundations of this tranquil home are recycled shipping containers, with timber features and lots of greenery. The Contained Sanctuary is a humble and organic place to live.

The brief was to create a hexagonal drink coaster in the style of 1960s’ Optical art. As I am a designer (and lover) of all things typographic, this design features a bold ‘S’ on a swirling background. This coaster was produced en masse to be ‘coloured in’ by visitors to the famous travelling Spiegeltent and for them to take it home as a memento of their visit to the 2017 Brisbane Festival.

Political correctness (PC) is a contemporary phenomenon that increasingly infiltrates society, thus changing the way we communicate with each other. WhiteWashed addresses a deep concern about PC as a tool to cleanse language.

This leaves words distorted, detached from reality, and complicated. Visually, this is expressed through the metaphor of the washing machine that white-washes and distorts language to free it from lingual germs.

The aim for The Bridge Gallery was to create a contemporary logo for emerging artists while also determining the symbolic meaning of crossing paths. The PPE poster was designed for teens working in the largest dumping site in Africa as informal electronic waste recyclers. The typeface which I created was inspired by a circular formation of LED lights to form a grid structure that I’d follow through into producing an entire typeface.

Humanising the Abject: Metaphors for the Female Body was a solo exhibition by Brisbane artist Jo D’hage held at POP Gallery in Woolloongabba.

A feminist critique of female representation in the art world, D’hage’s bold yet abstract imagery called for a clean and striking design, bringing the artworks to the fore and allowing the reader to contemplate the works during and after viewing.

A logo and business card concept was designed for Adderton House Art Gallery that incorporated the Story Bridge, which has a modern style. The overall design used line work and a unique interpretation of the Story Bridge. A business card was then designed using the logo, followed by information about Adderton House adjacent to it.

I am passionate about bringing awareness to the many social issues of our time. The Perspective Campaign highlights how we have the opportunity to gamble money for entertainment while those in poverty are struggling to earn a few dollars each day. One poker chip may not appear much but it could be life-changing for the world’s poorest communities. With effective charity giving, we can turn bad gambling habits into a good cause.
