FILM IN FOCUS

A SERVING OF WHITE SUPREMACY DISTASTEFULLY WRAPPED IN BLACK HUMOUR STARRING MATT DAMON, SUBURBICON IS A SCRIPTED CLASSIC BY THE COEN BROTHERS, UNEARTHED AND DIRECTED BY GEORGE CLOONEY WHICH HE HAS WOEFULLY TURNED INTO A SUBSTANDARD SUBURBAN SCREENPLAY.

S

et in the late ‘50s, Suburbicon is a crime movie with dark comical undertones that does its best to portray the gritty era of racial segregation and injustice that loomed within neighbourhoods of suburban America.

A peaceful, idyllic community with rows of manicured lawns and white picket fences that house God-fearing families, is the textbook residential for husband and father Gardner Lodge (Matt Damon) to raise his family.

Portraying an aura of perfection and solidarity has become Gardner’s daily mission. We are introduced to his sweet wife, Rose (Julianne Moore) the anchor of the family and mother to their cute yet perceptive son, Nicky (Noah Jupe), who is also wheelchair bound after a car accident – that Gardner was the driver. Julianne Moore also plays the part of Rose’s lookalike sister, Margaret, who is very cosy to the family – perhaps slightly too cosy.

But the tranquil surface masks a disturbing reality, as husband and father Lodge must navigate the town’s dark underbelly of betrayal, deceit, and violence.

This is where Clooney attempts to tackle the topic of American complacency and bigotry, but flatly fails.

Insert the Meyers – a black family who move in next door to the Lodge’s. Mr. and Mrs. Meyers (Leith M. Burke and Karimah Westbrook) and their young son, Andy (Tony Espinosa), is meant to resonate with our moral subconscious however the Meyers family are not given adequate screen time to actually make any kind of dent or impact to the thread of the movie.

So where does the black family fit into this narrative, you might be wondering. It doesn’t.

What we are meant to piece together, is that the families in this all-white enclave don’t want the (quiet, hardworking) Meyers there, whilst, the (outwardly) upstanding, respectable (not to mention white) Gardner

Lodge who is a psychotic mess—is the real menace to society.

The irony machine grinds through the movie so loudly that you might end up with a headache.

Suburbicon uses the Meyers as props.

This family’s plight hardly relates to anything that is going on with Gardner’s, the film skims the surface, telling the tale of two stories on a superficial level, but never giving either one enough time to really leave much of an impact.

And why is this? Plain and simple, Suburbicon is an awful motion picture. But it shouldn’t be. The film comprises of a great cast, impeccable costume design and what’s more, the cinematography is both welcoming and premonition. Nonetheless, Clooney is certainly no Spielberg, and while he’s been great acting in Coen brother’s films, he has no idea how to direct their material.

s a model and TV personality she’s a superstar – and married to another superstar, the singer John Legend.

Superstar + Superstar must add up to the most amazing partnership and yet she’s so down to earth, with a great sense of humour, never taking herself too seriously people find her very relatable.

What Chrissy talks about is always worth really listening to. Whether it’s speaking out against injustice or sharing her feelings about her personal life, her humanity and honesty shine through. As mother to her darling little daughter, Luna, she maybe will never know how just much strength and support she’s given to others when she talks openly about what being a parent means.

She always looks gorgeous – even though she prefers to be happy than hungry.

Because Chrissy Teigen simply loves food – all sorts of food: fast food, cakes, meat – including Thai food. She’s of mixed heritage, with her Thai mother teaching her about traditional Thai cooking, and her father whose roots are Norwegian.

Chrissy Teigen’s ambition was to be

a chef – until she was discovered and became a model. But starving herself is not her style and she’s known as a foodie. Her cookbook, Cravings, is a beautiful creation and people out there all over social media are clamoring for her next one.

She uses Twitter, Snapchat and Instagram to communicate with her followers and once famously appealed for ripe bananas because she was all set to bake banana bread and needed this essential ingredient – and soon!

Now her recipe for banana bread can be found all over social media – you are truly just a few clicks away from it – hand written by Chrissy Teigen herself. Like all her recipes, it’s easy to follow. And it’s clear that she has inspired so many people to take up home cooking – now they are taking to social media to show us how they can cook.

Most of all, Chrissy Teigen has given us encouragement to eat – and she has gifted us her blessing in the art of the enjoyment of food.

Nasser Alattiyah ARTIST NASSER ALATTIYAH SHARES HIS INSIGHT ON ART, DOHA AND HIS PHENOMENAL EXHIBITION TO BE SHOWCASED THIS MONTH AT FIRE STATION. QH: How did you get into art?

NA: Since my childhood I loved art and it all started as a hobby, I was like a visitor to the art world. Due to my work as Petroleum Engineer, I didn’t have enough time to practice art, but after 16 years in the engineering field I decided to change my life and become a full time artist.

QH: You recently showcased an exhibition in Paris, can you tell us a little bit about it and how did you get involved?

NA: I’ve been selected by Doha Fire Station to spend three months in Qatar Studio at Cite Internationale Des Art in Paris. I chose the name Planet Perfumes for my exhibition because perfume bottles come in different designs, sizes and odour. Each perfume has its own chemistry combination and concentration just like human beings.

ARTIST FEATURE QH: What was the inspiration behind those pieces?

NA: We humans come in different races, ethnicities, shapes and sizes, but in the end we are all equal. I always ask myself: Do we really know each other well enough? Each of us looking like a fancy perfume bottle from the outside, yet we may not like what the person has on the inside: their soul, heart or mind – just like a perfume, we may not like certain smells.

Some of the most simple perfume bottles carry the most exquisite perfume, do not be fool by what you see from the outside.

So I wanted to share my thoughts and reflections on this idea through my artwork during my stay at this amazing place.

QH: You’re soon to showcase your work in Qatar, what can we expect in your exhibition?

NA: The exhibition will be the same as the one I showcased in Paris, however it will be a bigger one with some artwork I couldn’t showcase before.

QH: When and where can we check it out?

NA: It will take place this month at Doha Fire Station Gallery.

QH: What is your favourite art spot in Doha?

NA: There are many: Doha Fire Station, Qatar Museums and Katara.

QH: What’s your insight on Doha’s art scene?

NA: Doha’s art scene is developing very fast and in the right direction.

Many changes started happening with Doha Fire Station’s Artist in Residence program supporting artists.

QH: Artists that inspire you?

NA: I’m always inspired by stories and how I can turn them into pieces of art. Inspiration comes a lot from my childhood memories.

There is so much freshness to the dish, and the quality and cooking style is just great. When I arrived to Doha, that was the only thing I had for three days straight.” (I’m sure the QH team will definitely give that dish a try.)

Tell us about how pleased you are to be here in Doha, working at W Hotel.

Being new to W Doha is a very new experience for me. The company firstly, is beyond professional and everyone working here is a professional in their own field and this is very encouraging as I am excited to be part of this team and also produce quality and amazing work.

When and where did your passion for Baklava begin?

Being from Turkey, when I was just ten years old I started to develop my passion for Baklavas. Baklavas in Turkey can be likened to that of bread and water, it is very much a fundamental item in everyone’s household pantry. My hometown of Gaziantep is famous for baked food and delicacies, which inspired me to then concentrate and specialize in the art of Baklavas.

If I had to technically dissect my success, it would be: 40% ingredients, 40% skills and 20% equipment. The most important element in being a successful Baklava chef is the ingredients that you associate yourself with.

Using the best flour, premium pistachios and specialized butter is what distinguishes my Baklavas and its authentic taste.

Please describe the perfect Baklava.

Each baklava is cooked to perfection and takes two hours of preparing 65-70 layers of filo pastry that end up being so transparent that it can be used as tracing paper. After this, you must do the ‘colour test’ with the Baklavas. Each piece when ready ought to resemble that of 22 carat gold, and following this is then the ‘taste test’, which quite simply is the sound of the crunch once bitten into and then it should easily and smoothly glide down your throat. These are the components

of ensuring a successful culinary masterpiece.

Is there a best time to enjoy Baklava – to round off a perfect meal or as an indulgent snack?

Traditionally in Turkey, Baklavas are eaten at the end of every meal as an everyday delicacy.

Here in Qatar they are in high demand for special occasions such as weddings, engagements, birthdays, corporate functions and Eid celebrations. So we cater for these big events, however if you are visiting the W Café, then my personal recommendation and one of my all time favourite, is to enjoy the Baklavas with a big serving of cream.

Haha! I am so flattered to be given this title and recognition. Maybe it is because I am now 41-years old and have been working with this dessert for the last 31 years, making it all I know and love to do. Honing in on one skill requires you to learn hands on from the best chefs, and I have learnt in some of the most prestigious Baklava kitchens in Turkey as well as internationally. With so many years under my belt, you would think that I might be confidently content with what I produce, however I am consistently thinking of my next creations, finding new flavours and more importantly, researching and further educating myself.

As the weather changes, so are our dining choices. If you’ve been long enough in the country, then you know there is no time to spare when a good chili breeze comes our way to dine at al fresco venues that offer impeccable views. And with that being said, QH had the fabulous opportunity to visit what’s going to be the next hotspot for this season, The Pier. Located at Four Seasons Hotel, this new restaurant (but also with lounge vibes) is situated just outside the hotel’s gardens. With a majestic view of Doha’s multi-coloured skyline by night, and facing one of Doha’s most coveted venues to dine at (yes, Nobu), this new al fresco hotspot is set to offer a chill time, but with an impeccable menu and one-of-a-kind bubbly beverages.

Its Cuisine

A great new place calls for an enticing menu, am I right? With an Arabic twist to its cuisine, but infused with Mexican and International flavours, it comes as no surprise its dishes are rich in spices and absolute delightfulness. And of course a great review wouldn’t be one without sharing our top recommendations if you’re planning to visit soon. We first kicked our evening off with cold appetizers: Arabian Caesar Salad with grilled halloumi cheese, watermelon, mint ranch dressing and zaatar croutons. The salad was definitely juicy, crunchy and fresh. But the true star of the cold dishes-set was the Black Truffled Hummus, which includes truffle oil and truffle chips – the perfect entrée to nibble with an exquisite and peculiar mix that we highly recommend to try. Also, a great one to try is the Labneh Sphere with Green Thyme, perfect to dip with a creamy touch before ordering heavy courses. Later we were surprised with a set of Saj that included delicious cheese and oregano bites, smoky turkey and others.

But if perhaps shawarmas are you thing and opt for not-too-heavy bites, then the Mexican Chicken (shawarmito) is a must on your list. A chicken shawarma infused with Mexican spices, harissa guacamole and shalal cheese – boy they were good! And continuing our foodie fiesta we also had a true seafood delicacy: Saffron Shrimp Skewers, which is a mix of spicy saffron shrimps, mixed vegetables and lemon sauce. And let us tell you, that sauce had the perfect amount of acidity for the perfect palate parade. (Too bad we couldn’t lick the plate!)

Besides its wonderful cuisine that we already raved about, this Mediterranean-vibe lounge also offers shisha to enjoy to beautiful sunsets with family and friends. The Pier is for anyone who wishes to enjoy and relax after work with exquisite culinary delights.

The Lowdown

We are constantly bombarded with new fad diets and gimmicks to help us lose weight. It can be difficult to differentiate between nutrition plans that work and one’s that are actually damaging to our bodies.

Combining a balanced nutrition and fitness plan will help you reach your goals in a sustainable and attainable way. Healthy weight loss falls between 1-2lb (0.5-1kg) a week and 1% body fat a month. So do not fall for plans that claim you will lose more than 3lbs a week, in all likelihood you will gain that weight back shortly after as it is probably just water weight that you’ve lost.

The number one thing to look for in a nutrition plan is balanced proportion of carbs, fats, and proteins. Contrary to popular belief, carbs are essential to living a healthy and active lifestyle. At least 40% of our diet needs to come from whole unprocessed carbs (fruits, vegetables, and whole grains).

A Balanced Diet

When examining a nutrition plan it is important to ask, “Can I stick to this for the rest of my life?” If the answer is “yes” and the nutrition plan is balanced, you’re on the right track. The best way to know how much you should eat is to use a food diary that records calories (such as Fitness Pal), for ladies start at 1800 calories and reduce by 200 calories until you are losing 1-2lb (0.5-1kg) a week.

You can approach your fitness plan just as you do your nutrition plan. Look for an exercise plan that is balanced (strength and cardio), and sustainable (you can stick to it for the rest of your life). One of the most popular myths around exercise for women is that strength training leads to big muscles. This is not true; in fact doing 15-20 repetitions of a strength training exercise will give women long lean muscles. Strength training is essential in a workout plan because it increases your metabolism overall and strengthens your bones.

Weight loss and healthy living is a marathon not a sprint.

The Lowdown

The newly re-imagined Ritz-Carlton Spa with its magnificent Mother Of Pearl walls and dazzling Tuscany marble and mosaic tiles is a sensory delight. The pallets of neutral shades and contemporary design were the perfect setting for my afternoon of pampering after a long and uncharacteristically busy week. From the moment I entered the Ritz-Carlton hotel, the outstanding service level of the staff really led me to believe I was in good hands.

What’s The Deal?

FEEL THE BURN My afternoon began with an intense 45-minute workout in the spa’s new fitness center, which boasts state-ofthe-art cardiovascular and strength training equipment by Technogym. I decided to make use of the private ladies section of the gym, and on this occasion I had the entire gym to myself, which allowed for some reflection and introspection.

The glorious view of the marina was a delightful distraction while I was burning calories and toning my body. After getting the right endorphins flowing with my workout, I was ready to unwind and relax.

SIGNATURE PEARL BODY SCRUB (90 MINUTES, QR900) After a steamy high-pressure shower in the spa’s dressing room, which contains the most fabulous feminine touches (my favourite being the round pink fur ottoman in the makeup area) I put my feet up in the private spa lounge. Here I replenished my electrolytes with some green tea and fruit before being ushered into one of the seven secluded treatment rooms. The Signature Pearl Body Scrub is inspired by Qatar’s traditional pearling heritage. The luxuriously blended elements of crushed pearls and sea salt generously enriched with minerals act to rejuvenate the skin while softening and soothing it simultaneously. After the exfoliation my skin felt like silk, I was then lathered with body butter. This treatment also included a scalp, neck and shoulder massage.

The Round Up

If you’re looking for an exclusive, premier spa experience that emphasises privacy and a quiet space to reflect, then The Ritz-Carlton Spa is for you. I recommend it for working women as well as full time mums who wish to unwind and get away from the noise of the city and the demands of your daily routine. Treatments are strictly by appointment only, and guests (only over the age of 16 are permitted), are encouraged to arrive 30 minutes prior to the scheduled treatment in order to enjoy the lounges, saunas and steam rooms.

PERSONALISED FACIAL (60 MINUTES, QR700) Generally I have combination skin, but in Doha it tends to be drier because I’m constantly in air-conditioned rooms.

Therefore I requested my therapist to personalise my facial to hydrate and restore my skin. The treatment began with a brush cleanse to purify the skin, I then received intense exfoliation to get rid of the dry, dead skin and reveal a smoother, brighter complexion. The mask, which contained Aloe Vera and almond extracts, assisted in the much, needed moisturising process. All the exclusive ESPA products used in treatments are specifically curated for the Ritz-Carlton Spa.

“You are not yourself when you are hungry” are very wise words said by a well-known confectionary brand. With a spacious vibe to it all, the room offered a modern bathroom with a bathtub, shower and a spacious glam mirror for those evenings that required some glam time. And adding to more goodness, my room also offered a terrace with a spectacular view to West Bay and its beach. And boy let me tell you, its sunsets were to die for. And because a proper staycation wouldn’t be one without room service and a cosy night in, I dialed room service for an exquisite dinner, which now you can easily order via the hotel’s app.

LOCAL GETAWAY Come Dine with Me

The hotel offers authentic Thai, West Coast comfort food, and a delicious Italian outlet. On my first evening, I had a magical culinary experience at Isaan, the Thai venue located on the 2nd floor.

Offering six set menus, options are most definitely endless; each set menu comes with a myriad of dishes mixed up with different flavors to offer something different from every region in Thailand.

Ideally for two people, each set menu is packed with so much goodness, and if anyone wishes to order separately, that is also available. But because I’m a tough cookie to please, I decided to venture on the whole set menu thing and give it a fair go. Prices were not too bad, pleasantly affordable for the amount of dishes being offered. The meals were rich in flavor with delicious twists creating authenticity in each and every one of them. And of course this wouldn’t be a review without offering my top recommendations, hands down to its coconut ice cream, vegetable wok in soy sauce, and its Pad Thai with prawns and nuts. And it comes as no surprise that on a Thursday night, Isaan was packed with couples, families, co-workers and singletons at the bar area.

Next stop was Santa Monica Breakfast Club’s brunch located on the 1st floor. With a casual vibe, injected with vibrant colours and with a youthful approach to brunching – rest assured this upbeat and cool venue holds something different worthy of visiting. With prices being familyfriendly (soft beverage QR260; special beverage brunch QR360), the fun starts from 12.30pm until 3.30pm. But that’s not all, continuing with its casual vibe, the music was top notch. And when I say, top notch, I mean: it was so good I wanted to dance too! But if breakfast is your thing, the venue is also open for daily breakfast from 6am until 11am, and Fridays from 6am until 10.30am.

Extra Touches

As my staycation continued, exploring its premises was top priority and pool time was definitely high on my list. The hotel offers a spacious pool area with a myriad of pool beds to tan, relax and enjoy the weekend. Also, not to mention its gym facilities were top. With clean, new and hightech facilities, my gym experience was packed with encouragement to pull through that tough hour. (I’m not a gym girl if you’re wondering.) Furthermore, if you’re a skincare addict like myself, Jaula Spa is also available if pampering away is an option. Now the spa is offering an age defying treatment to beat wrinkles, stress, and inject vitality to the face. Clinically proven, the treatment boosts optimum cellular function for nourished and youth looking skin in a 60min massage.

The Lowdown

Hidden off-road and tucked behind hoards of trees and bushes, as you make your way up the narrow sandy path from the main road, eventually reaching La Eufemia is all in all a welcoming sigh of relief. Stretched out before you are miles and miles of pristine beach lapped by crystal blue waters, and then that is when it hits you – the aroma of flavours that are being concocted in the little beach club.

Which makes one ponder, what to do first: answer to the call of the inviting beach, or give in to the smells of the kitchen and chow down?

Well, luckily at La Eufemia you can do both! Scattered on the beach are sun loungers, beach beds and lazy swinging hammocks, so as you dip your feet in the water, waiting staff eagerly bring out that delicious meal you just ordered.

The Menu

So, speaking of ‘delicious meal’, let’s break down why La Eufemia is ever so popular for its tacos. Firstly no one needs to borrow a bank loan to dine at this gypsy style restaurant. In relation to the upmarket location La Eufemia is in, food on offer is actually dirt-cheap, starting at $20 pesos a piece – but don’t worry, as taste and portion sizes are still very much…. bueno.

Yes, of course there are many Mexican offerings on the menu, but no one comes to La Eufemia and not order Tacos! So let’s Taco ‘bout this seemingly casual dish and why it is the talk of the town.

Firstly, there are many options of fillings to choose from, but highly recommended is their pescado tacos, as the fish is caught fresh on the day and grilled right on the beach, and the taste? Well, it’s truly muy bueno!! Oh, and don’t shy away from the pineapple habanero sauce, it adds a super delicious Mexican kick to your meal.

If tacos are not really what tickles your taste buds, but you are still wanting to experience the hospitality of the shaggy dog, La Eufemia serves other classics such as nachos, guacamole and ceviche, and all this can be washed down with a freshly plucked coconut.

Quite simply, the menu is an uncomplicated single page listing of cheap yet cheerful Mexican delights!

The Roundup

Every aspect of the decor and the ‘80s music played in La Eufemia reflects a chilled out beach vibe which instantly puts you in the most relaxed mood. It is the perfect mix of bar/restaurant/beach lounge, attracting both the locals and tourists.

Tulum is full of family friendly, top-notch restaurants, and if it’s one of those that you are looking for, then you have just wasted your time reading this as La Eufemia certainly does not make the cut! However, if you are young and cool and in touch with your inner hippie, then you will feel right at home at La Eufemia. If you are neither (as) young (as you wish to be) nor (as) cool (as you think yourself to be), then visiting La Eufemia WILL certainly bring out that laid-back hippie side that you never knew you had!
