“Supporting customers on transition to lower emissions”

Sustainability can no longer be in the fringes and Osama Ali, managing director, HSBC Qatar talks about how the bank is integrating it in its business focus, and its thrust areas such as green finance.

QH: How is HSBC Qatar integrating sustainability into its business strategy, considering the global focus on environmental issues?

Ali: The biggest impact we can have is by supporting our customers on their transition to lower emissions to achieve net zero. The global climate crisis requires global solutions, and as one of the leading international banks globally we are well positioned to support this task. We’re focused on supporting our customers in their journeys to diversify and decarbonise and are committed to net zero in our own operations and supply chain by 2030. We have taken a leading role in rewiring the financial system to put climate at the centre of decision making, including as founding members of the Glasgow Financial Alliance for Net Zero (GFANZ).

QH: Can you share some of HSBC Qatar's sustainability initiatives, especially in areas such as renewable energy or green finance?

Ali: As thought leader with global expertise, we have been at the forefront of creating awareness about sustainability in Qatar, providing advisory to clients in the public and private sectors in drafting their environmental, social and governance (ESG) frameworks. The next step is financing where HSBC has been active in arranging Green Loans and Bonds for our Qatari clients. Investments are an important focus for Qatar, so we are presenting green investment ideas,

especially in the renewables sector to Qatari investors which is beneficial for investors and for companies seeking new capital.

QH: Are there any specific collaborations that HSBC Qatar has with businesses in Qatar to help them achieve sustainability goals?

Ali: We recently advised Masraf Al Rayan in creating the framework for sustainable finance and have been working closely with Qatar Exchange and listed entities sharing international best practices on ESG reporting standards and finding solutions for businesses to achieve sustainably sound investments.

QH: Looking ahead, what role do you envision for HSBC Qatar in driving environmental change?

Ali: Scaling new economy solutions is a key tenet of our net zero strategy, supported by our climate tech venture debt and capital funds. We want to supercharge this focus to help shape the net zero global economy of tomorrow. With the expertise of HSBC Innovation Bank and the global connecting power of HSBC, we are well placed to continue scaling climate tech solutions of the future. As both regulations and technology are continuously evolving, our advice to our clients is to embed sustainability ideas in their strategic plans from the outset and to take an enterprise-wide approach, rather than creating a separate set-up responsible for sustainability.

QTM also expands opportunities by highlighting offerings and identifying trends for potential expansion. Moreover, it cultivates

a professional ecosystem, propelling overall industry development and growth.

Qatar travel made easy

In a candid conversation with Manoj Tiwari, general manager, and Aditya Sharma, business development director, Regency Travels and Tours Qatar, we discuss strategies for handling post-FIFA travel demand, crafting customised packages, simplifying winter travel, utilising Hayya Cards and implementing flexible booking policies.

Manoj: To create diverse Qatar travel packages, we start with thorough market research. Understanding traveller preferences, we design varied itineraries with cultural experiences, adventure activities, luxury options, and family-friendly elements. Customisable components allow tailored trips. We partner with various accommodations and curate activities to align with different interests. Our packages include local insights, transparent pricing, and accessible customer support. Continuous feedback ensures ongoing improvement, catering to a wide range of preferences and enhancing Qatar's exploration.

QH: What measures are in place to simplify travel planning during Qatar's peak winter season?

QH: How are you handling the increased travel demand post-FIFA, and what advice do you have for smooth bookings?

Manoj: Addressing post-FIFA travel demand in Qatar involves careful planning. We've expanded our services and network to accommodate more tourists. To ensure smooth bookings, plan well ahead, especially during events and the upcoming cruise season. Flexible dates can improve availability and prices. Staying informed about travel regulations is crucial, and travel insurance offers added security. Adapting to demand and providing these tips, we aim to offer travellers a seamless experience in Qatar.

QH: How do you create travel packages that cater to different preferences for exploring Qatar?

Manoj: In Qatar's peak winter season, we simplify travel planning by offering pre-packaged itineraries tailored to various interests and budgets. We provide bundled options for accommodation, transportation, and activities to streamline logistics. Detailed information on seasonal events, weather, and recommended experiences further aids in planning an enjoyable trip.

QH: How are you incorporating Hayya Cards into packages, and what benefits do they offer to tourists?

Aditya: We incorporate Hayya Cards to enhance tourists' experiences in Qatar, providing convenient access to public transportation. These cards cover buses and the Doha Metro, simplifying travel. Included in our packages, they offer cost savings, and convenience, and promote eco-friendly travel. This addition adds

value and encourages sustainable tourism, making it easier for tourists to explore Qatar while being environmentally conscious.

QH: What lessons have you learned from travel disruptions, and how are these shaping your flexible booking policies?

Aditya: Travel disruptions prompted us to re-evaluate and adopt more flexible booking policies. We've learned to quickly adjust itineraries for changing restrictions and customer needs. In response, our booking policies in Qatar now offer free cancellations within a specific time frame for unforeseen events. We've introduced reduced upfront payments, refundable bookings, and easy rebooking options. These changes prioritise customer safety and peace of mind, allowing for adjustments or cancellations with ease, and enhancing their overall travel experience in Qatar.

Debut exhibition of Princess Charlene's L'Écume de Diamants Tiara at Printemps Doha

n September 2023, Printemps Doha presented Princess Charlene of Monaco's Tiara in partnership with Maison Bäumer Vendôme, offering an exclusive month-long exhibition to the public.

For the first time ever, the Palace of Monaco has granted permission to showcase Princess Charlene's magnificent L'Ecume de Diamants tiara, famously worn during her celebrated wedding to Prince Albert II de Monaco in July 2011.

In that same year, Lorenz Bäumer, the last independent fine jewellery designer in Paris' Place Vendôme (France), had the privilege of being selected as Princess Charlene of Monaco's personal jeweller for her wedding to Prince Albert II. Among various designs, the tiara, named L'Ecume de Diamants, captured the Princess's heart.

This exquisite white gold tiara, reflecting 400 hours of painstaking craftsmanship, embodies exceptional technical skills suitable for royal occasions. A unique creation mirroring the elegance of the princess, it features 16.57 carats of round diamonds, 14.46 carats of baguette diamonds, 28 carats of pear-shaped diamonds, and polished white gold, creating a radiant, wave-like effect—a shared passion between the Princess and Lorenz Bäumer.

Furthermore, Bäumer, an engineer by training, displayed his creativity by fashioning this modern tiara into a versatile ornament that can be worn as a tiara, a hairpiece, or a brooch for everyday use, thanks to a clever mechanism.

While L'Ecume de Diamants is more intricate to secure than a traditional tiara, Bäumer embraced the challenge with his daring choice, earning high praise not only from the royal family of Monaco but also from critics beyond European borders.

Mindfulness, mental health and more...

In conversation with Sara Naveed, Nadia Al Haroon, Doha-based wellness and lifestyle influencer speaks about everything to do with mindfulness and how it can have a domino effect on life.

QH: How did you shift from international relations and criminology to promoting mental health, and what ignited your passion for it?

Nadia: In criminology, there is a fair amount of psychology, which I have always been interested in. As the years progressed, I got diagnosed with a health condition called fibromyalgia. I went to one of the best hospitals in the world and started understanding the body-mind connection and how our mental health hugely impacts our health conditions, so I decided to be certified as a mindfulness master practitioner to help others who also suffer from similar challenges.

QH: Share a quick insight into how mindfulness practices impact our mental well-being in daily life.

Nadia: Our mind is constantly absorbing and talking to us, which in turn controls the way we think, feel and behave. Through mindfulness techniques, we can connect with our subconscious, understand our thinking patterns and live a more peaceful life.

QH: Can you give an example of how our daily experiences affect our thoughts, emotions, and actions?

Nadia: Our body is like a computer system and the brain is the processor. The more we experience something, it starts to cement a belief system which in return creates a feeling and comes out as a reaction. For example, if a child is constantly criticised, they may grow up being triggered by the slightest criticism, which in turn may bring out a reaction as crying. When we deeply understand what makes us the way we are, we can make positive and effective changes.

Talking To
30 | QH | October 2023
Nadia Al Haroon, Doha-based wellness and lifestyle influencer

QH: What sets mindfulness apart from other wellness trends, making it a lasting tool for positive change?

Nadia: Mindfulness has been practised by Buddhists for thousands of years and only recently has it been scientifically studied more deeply, where brain scans have proven its effectiveness.

QH: Tips for those eager to start practising mindfulness amidst their busy schedules?

Nadia: There are many methods how mindfulness can be practised. It can be something that can take as little as five minutes of your day, or you can allow it to take more space (a few hours of your day). Depending on how you choose to practise it, mindfulness can be a practice that becomes second nature.

QH: Could you suggest simple changes in routines that can boost overall well-being?

Nadia: Being mindful of your breathing is a great way to control your nervous system. It is something you can do in bed to help you go to sleep, or you can do it at any time

during the day to slow down your nervous system. There are visual breathing exercises on YouTube where it shows you how to take in a deep breath, how long to hold it for and when to breathe out.

QH: How does mindfulness contribute to resilience and facing life’s challenges?

Nadia: When our nervous system is on overload, it is difficult to make sound decisions. When we control our nervous system through mindfulness practices, we can then see that we make better decisions in our lives and are more productive in a shorter period.

QH: What are your future goals in raising mental health awareness and promoting mindfulness?

Nadia: Mental health used to be a taboo subject and was something frowned upon. It is important for people to know that we all go through mental health difficulties at some point in our lives and there is nothing shameful about it. Once people embace it and talk about it more openly, can the positive domino effect that it can have on individuals as well as the people around them be truly felt.

Steering Qatar’s business landscape

Fahad Ahmed Al Khalaf, chairman of Al Khalaf Group, talks us through the key stages of development of the conglomerate and how, over the years, he’s been able to embody a legacy of innovation, resilience and the strategies that propel lasting achievements.

QH: How has Qatar Meat Production Co. contributed to Qatar's processed meat industry since its establishment in 1960?

Al-Khalaf: Since 1960, Qatar Meat Production Co. has led Qatar's processed meat industry. Built on heritage, quality, and patriotism, we started with Lebanese foodstuff exports in the 1950s, later expanding to fish exports. In 1966, we introduced air cargo imports from Hungary, Bulgaria, and Romania to serve Qatar. This drive fuels our journey, promoting innovation and self-sufficiency. Prioritising quality, traceability, safety, and ethical sourcing ensures a consistent meat supply, decreasing import dependence for heightened food security.

QH: Could you share insights into the modern processing machinery and technologies that Qatar Meat Production Co. utilises in its operations?

Al-Khalaf: Our advanced equipment spans gas flushing for extended shelf life without compromising quality, an industrial microwave for nutritional integrity, a continuous line for precise meat sizing, automated breading and frying to prevent contamination, a specialised cooking chamber, a spiral freezer for quality assurance, and automated vacuum packing. These innovations, alongside ongoing global R&D, ensure premium, safe, contaminant-free, and products conforming to halal norms from source to final production.

QH: What motivated the establishment of Qatar Meat Production Co. and how does it align with Qatar's goal of self-sufficiency in meat products?

Al-Khalaf: Our aim is to fortify the meat food system, ensuring resilience against future supply challenges and establishing a sustainable governance model. In a market where poultry holds 70 percent share and red meat constitutes 22 percent, we're proud to be the first local meat manufacturer to welcome multinational influences in palates, product sizes, branding, packaging, shares, and business growth in Qatar. The pandemic underscored the importance of domestic production, emphasising the need for sustainable practices to guarantee a steady supply of meat products in the country.

QH: In what ways does Qatar Meat Production Co. ensure the premium quality and hygienic packaging of its products for diverse consumer preferences?

Al-Khalaf: Our well-trained staff and cutting-edge technology drive our success. Our R&D team rigorously develops an average of 30 products per month, conducting sensory tests and shelf-life assessments to meet various consumer preferences and market trends. Our laboratory can handle up to 100 samples per batch, conducting comprehensive testing, including physical, chemical, and microbial analysis, meeting international GS0 requirements. We maintain rigorous standards, complying with global food safety initiatives, ISO standards, and halal certification. Our diverse and contingency-focused efforts include market research, international engagement, and ongoing product development for raw materials such as meat and spices.

Short Shots

Favourite travel destination: Austria.

Favourite book genre: Religion and history.

Most favourite meal: Seafood, particularly fish.

Best advice received: Never give up. Always wake up early in the morning.

Unwinding after a long day: I'm more of a homebody. I cherish moments with family at home and enjoy cooking.

The menu, a delightful blend of old favourites and exciting new additions, promised a culinary journey to remember. For Indian cuisine enthusiasts, there was a tantalising array of dishes that promised to satisfy every craving. Meanwhile, those seeking international flavours were in for a treat with a selection of comforting classics and delectable snacks.

As I checked the menu, a few dishes immediately caught my attention. The Bamboo Biryani, a Sunday special, piqued my interest with its promise of unique flavours. The thought of tender lamb shank Biriyani, served with an array of chutneys, raita, and crispy pappadam, had my taste buds tingling with anticipation.

The starters presented a mouthwatering dilemma - should I start

with the Avocado Bruschetta, the Quinoa and Prawn Salad with its mouth-watering blend of avocado cream, salmon roe, and orange segments, or perhaps the Avocado Caprese Salad? Decisions, decisions!

A diverse and satisfying culinary journey

For the main course, the Stuffed Eggplant and Halloumi Cheese dish immediately stood out. The combination of hummus, baba ghanoush, grilled halloumi, pine seeds, jarjeer leaves, and pomegranate molasses promised a medley of flavours and textures that I couldn't wait to savour. And of course, the Bamboo Chicken Biryani and Tandoori Crusted Salmon were equally tempting options.

For those in search of a hearty platter, the Royal Indian Kebab Platter beckoned with its persuading variety of Tandoori lamb chops, Shish kebab, Chicken tikka, and Malabar Prawns. Each bite promised a burst of spices and flavours that would surely leave an impression.

As the meal unfolded, it became evident that the culinary team at Q Lounge had poured their heart and soul into crafting a menu that would leave guests with a truly memorable dining experience. The blend of traditional Indian dishes with international comfort food displayed their dedication to providing a diverse and satisfying culinary journey.

In the end, my visit to Q Lounge was more than just a meal – it was a culinary adventure that left me eager to return and explore even more of the menu's delights. Banana Island Resort's Q Lounge is indeed a gem in Doha's culinary scene, inviting guests to savour not just the food, but the entire experience of indulgence and relaxation.

Culinary prelude

Our gastronomic journey began with an array of tantalising starters. The Wild Mushroom Cappuccino, adorned with delicate vanilla foam, exuded a rich, creamy essence. The Chicken Caesar Salad, Crispy Calamari, Pepperoni Flat Bread, and the Signature Hummus further heightened our anticipation.

The main course offerings at Mina Hotel were nothing short of extraordinary. The Braised Lamb Shank, simmered to perfection over eight hours and served with fragrant oriental rice, was an absolute favourite. Equally delectable were the Penne Con Pollo, featuring succulent chicken in a creamy mushroom sauce, and the Grilled Half Chicken, which boasted an enticing smoky flavour. The Grilled Slices of Prime Filet and the Oriental Grill also held their own, highlighting culinary expertise.

The sweet finale

The grand finale of our culinary escapade arrived in the form of mouthwatering desserts. The Signature Fudge, featuring a chocolate cake with hot chocolate sauce and vanilla ice cream, provided a delightful contrast of temperatures and tastes.
