QH: As a newly appointed General Manager of a Hilton property, what are some novelties you’ll be implementing within the property?

I am thrilled to introduce exciting new initiatives that will elevate our guests’ experiences. Here are some innovative implementations we have in store: introducing QR codes and online ordering for convenient dining, allowing guests to order from their table or even the poolside; moving away from a traditional restaurant set-up, and setting-up satellite kitchens and portable pop-up dining areas to enhance guest experience; adapting menu offerings with seasonality, events and special occasions.

QH: What can we expect from such a unique property concept?

Tapestry Collection by Hilton (FKB) reflects and celebrates the kite surfing lifestyle. With long kitesurfing seasons (November-July) and ideal conditions for riders of all levels, it offers a range of disciplines. The property includes an onsite Kitesurfing school, equipment rentals, dining, fitness center, pool, and water activities.

QH: If you could describe the property in 3 words, what would they be?

Unique, homely and sublime.

QH: How would you define success?

Success, to me, is achieving a harmonious blend of personal and business goals while supporting my team to do the same. Motivated by practical targets, we strive to enhance efficiency, enabling organisational progress and fostering individual growth. As a leader, I prioritise empowering my team to reach their own milestones alongside the company’s objectives, ensuring their personal success.

QH: What lessons have you learned within the industry that could serve as advice to young and aspiring adults?

Over three decades of my career in the hospitality industry have taught me many life lessons. People are at the core of this industry, so it’s crucial to learn the do’s and don’ts in the service industry. Failing to do so means falling short of exceeding guest expectations. My advice to young professionals: embrace the importance of exceptional service delivery.

QH: What is your favourite spot to unwind after a stressful day?

The terrace at Hang Loose Bar is my go-to spot to unwind. With a pristine pool, refreshing drinks, sunken lounge chairs, and a scenic wooden swing overlooking the breezy beach, it’s the perfect escape after a long, stressful day.

I grew up, nothing special, like any kid in Qatar. I joined a club because my father was going to the club training so sometimes, he used to take me there with him. I knew athletics because of my father. I want to win everything. That's my plan. It 's been like this always.

Mutaz Essa Barshim

utaz Essa Barshim has a busy season ahead of him. The affable Qatari athlete sounds upbeat as he gears up for the Diamond League which is returning to London on July 23 and aims to nail a fourth consecutive World Championship gold in Budapest this August.

IN the first week of May, high jump superstar Mutaz Barshim kicked off his 2023 outdoor campaign on home soil when he competed at the opening round of the 2023 Wanda Diamond League at the iconic Khalifa International Stadium.

Barshim, a three-time Diamond League champion, aims to reclaim the Diamond Trophy in London after a disappointing start to the season in Doha. He is eager to tap into the same form that led him to become a world champion in London six years ago. Returning to London holds a special place in his heart as that is where he secured his first World Championships title.

The 31-year-old knows that 2023 is the year of the World Championships and arriving in top shape could set him up in top shape for the rest of the season. Not that an occasion fazes the current Olympic and World Champion but the tall Qatari athlete has underlined the importance of the first competition of the new season that would eventually get him to eye the Summer Games next year in Paris.

In between the Doha leg on May 5 and the Paris Olympics 2024 next July-August, Barshim has outlined two key events for him to focus on in the next six months.

The 2023 Wanda Diamond League calendar

The 2023 Wanda Diamond League calendar includes 14 meetings that started with its first event in Doha on May 5, 2023; second event at Rabat on May 28 and the concluding two-day final at Eugene on September 16-17 September 2023.

Liwan Sessions welcomes: Mutaz Essa Barshim
Sports Buzz

Sports Buzz

"The 2023 season is about to begin, and I have set my own goals and targets to chase. The World Championships in Budapest and the Asian Games in China are my top targets for the season," Barshim announced in the build-up to the start of the 2023 season. Barshim, who famously shared the high jump gold medal with Italian Gianmarco Tamberi at the Tokyo Olympics 2020, said he had been training well.

Committed performance

"My training in Qatar went smoothly over the winter and I look forward to my Wanda Diamond League season opener in Doha," said Barshim.

Barshim senior said he would be looking for a committed performance on home soil throughout the season. "Whenever I step on the track, I always want to give my best, that has been the case since my first Diamond League appearance back in Doha, 2011," he added with a smile. “High jump is my passion and I want to make sure that my name is mentioned whenever high jump is mentioned. I’ve made history being on top of my game for the past decade, but I still strive for more," he said. "Like I said earlier, this is a long season and I am looking forward to it but it is important that I prioritise my health and stay consistent with a routine that works for me,” he added.

Last year, Barshim arrived at the Oregon World Championships not in the best shape but still went on to turn on the magic when it was needed. He outshone Korea’s Woo Sanghyeok (2.35m) and Ukrainian Andriy Protsenko (2.33m) to soar to his third worlds gold. “Three world golds in a row is something that has never been done before,” Barshim said. “I know I put a lot of hard work to be where I am.”

Barshim, with thousands of home fans rooting for him, had the company of compatriot Abderrahman Samba who was seen in action at Doha leg of the Wanda Diamond League. Samba, who set the Asian 400m hurdles record of 46.98 in 2018, sounded upbeat ahead of his major competition in a long while.

“The Doha Meeting was my first major competition since Tokyo 2021 and provided me with a good starting point as I built towards the World Championships this summer,” Samba told worldathletics.org. “I was in a good shape this time last year and I was disappointed to miss out on the World Championships, but I’ve had a consistent block of training and I’m healthy and ready to race. The 400m hurdles is one of the most exciting events on the programme right now and I want to be back in the mix,” Samba said.

Chequered career

• Qatar’s Mutaz Barshim and Abderrahman Samba got their 2023 Wanda Diamond League campaigns under way on home soil when they competed in the season opener in Doha on May 5.

• Barshim won a third world high jump title in Oregon last year, adding another honour to a career graph that includes the joint Olympic crown he claimed alongside Gianmarco Tamberi in Tokyo.

• The Olympic Games final in Tokyo was Samba’s most recent 400m hurdles race, the 2019 world bronze medallist having injured his hamstring while warming up for the Doha event last May. That injury ruled him out for the whole of 2022.

• Barshim, who set the Asian high jump record of 2.43m – placing him No.2 on the world all-time list in 2014 – is a revered sports figure in Qatar.

• Barshim is the current Olympic Champion (2020). He is also the current World Champion and second highest jumper of all-time with a personal best of 2.43m.

• He won gold at the 2017 World Championships in London and at the 2019 World Championships held in Doha and 2022 World Championship in Oregon.

• In 2021, his bronze medal win at the 2012 Summer Olympics was promoted to silver in a three-way tie for second due to the disqualification of the original gold medalist. That gives him a tally of one gold and two silver medals at the Olympic Games.

FRIENDS AND FOE LIKE NO OTHER

At the Tokyo Olympic Games, a sports story like no other unfolded. Mutaz Essa Barshim of Qatar and Italy's Gianmarco Tamberi - both very good friends off the field - were tied for the gold at the end of the high hump final. A Tokyo Games official approached the duo and asked if they wanted to jump off for the gold medal. "Can we have two golds?" Barshim asked him. "I look at him, he looks at me, and we know it. We just look at each other and we know, that is it, it is done. There is no need,” Barshim said after sharing the medal with Tamberi, who added, " Neither of us wanted to take this immense joy away from the other, we didn’t even need to discuss it, an eye contact and we both knew we wanted to share this gold. In fact, many times before we’ve joked ‘imagine if we could share an Olympic gold medal in Tokyo?" The Olympic Games 2020 ended with tears of joy for both and adulation from track and field fans right across the globe.

Discipline around the morsel

MUNIRA RAHAT on why ‘you are what you eat’ holds true

he saying "you are what you eat" predates its originator, highlighting its timeless truth about nutrition. It is widely acknowledged that healthy food is crucial for a healthy body, and everyone should strive for a balanced diet. However, the abundance of conflicting information on what constitutes a balanced diet often leaves people confused and unsure of what they should be eating. Social media trends sometimes promote fad diets without considering individual health conditions, disregarding the fundamentals of nutrition.

What is the difference between nutritionists and dieticians?

While these terms are often used interchangeably, they actually represent distinct career paths that play important roles in maintaining good health. Dieticians, who are registered professionals regulated by bodies such as the British Dietetics Association, primarily promote well-being through medical nutrition therapy and cater to individuals with chronic diseases. On the other hand, nutritionists, regulated by organisations such as the British Association of Nutritional Therapists and Nutritional Therapy Council, focus on encouraging healthy eating habits and balanced lifestyles. They work exclusively with healthy individuals who aim to enhance their nutritional intake and lifestyle choices, rather than treating specific illnesses like diabetes.

What is basic nutrition?

It involves consuming a balanced diet consisting of five essential nutrient groups and water. These groups can be categorised as macronutrients and micronutrients. Macronutrients, including carbohydrates, proteins, and fats, are required in larger quantities for energy, growth, repair, and overall wellbeing. Micronutrients, on the other hand, encompass vitamins and minerals, which are necessary in smaller yet significant amounts to support bodily functions and maintain good health. Unfortunately, many people, in their pursuit of weight loss, often resort to changing their meals drastically, skipping meals, or following trending diets, leading to deficiencies in essential micronutrients and macronutrients. Recent studies have highlighted strong connections between inadequate intake of specific nutrients and the risk of developing chronic illnesses such as heart disease, obesity, diabetes, cancer, and osteoporosis.

Achieving healthy weight loss

The journey of a nutrition therapist starts with guiding clients on achieving weight loss in a healthy manner. The first point is to assess their body fat distribution and work together to bring it to a safe level, minimising obesity-related health risks.

Desired body weight is achieved through a "Fat Loss Transformation Program" that involves replacing their current meals with healthier alternatives and promoting an active lifestyle, hand in hand.

The clients' goals, current lifestyle, activity levels, and eating habits are assessed and the Body Mass Index (BMI) is calculated to provide clients with an understanding of where they stand at the moment.

Clients embark on a lifestyle change journey, receiving weekly meal plans tailored to their individual needs. These plans are designed to meet their macro and micronutrient requirements, while also considering calorie count and portion control. Client preferences and limitations are taken into account when selecting foods for meal plans.

It's important to be patient during this health journey as the body needs time to adjust to dietary changes and new habits. Breaking old habits can be challenging, but healthy habits reduce the risk of diseases, enhance physical appearance & mental well-being, and boost energy levels. Once a healthier lifestyle is embraced, it becomes a decision none can ever regret.

Three Sixty Restaurant: A revolving indulgence

The Torch Doha Hotel, an Olympic torch-shaped skyscraper at the Aspire Zone, invited QH to experience their extravagant menu while enjoying a 360-degree panoramic view of Doha in one of their most luxurious restaurants.

hree Sixty restaurant located on the 47th floor of the iconic torch tower is a must-see for its uniquely modern design. It is the only revolving restaurant in Doha that offers delicious cuisine and breathtaking panoramic views.

Once inside the restaurant, my partner and I were ushered to a table by a friendly staffer. Being a regular to this fancy dine-out, we were still fascinated and captivated looking out from inside the transparent walls at the vast expanse of the Doha skyline. We marvelled at the sights of Aspire Park with its amazingly huge and lush park complete with sports grounds, big lakes, and an expanse of green space. A few minutes later as the revolving floor turned, our eyes also chanced upon the enormous Khalifa International Stadium. These are amongst the many sights guests will enjoy whilst atop The Torch Doha.

Foody Tales
38 | QH | June 2023

However, we came to savour not only the sights but also an enjoyable dining experience, so our attention turned to the food. For starters, we were served butterfly crunchy shrimps – crispy breaded shrimps battered and prepared to perfection served with citrus tartare dip. Another appetiser was melt-in-yourmouth slow-cooked short ribs croquettes. Obviously, we went for more and tried their delicious chicken caesar salad, not only was the salad fresh for the palate but also it was light and its portion was perfect for two.

Next came the main course - each item having been skillfully prepared by the talented chef. We ordered the flavourful chef's special seafood - this seafood platter is quite copious with a variety of delectable grilled lobster, prawns, hamour, calamari, green beans, and lemon sauce. Then came the signature wagyu ribeye steak – it was the first bite that simply blew my taste buds away! Cooked to utter perfection, served neatly and unpretentiously with fresh green asparagus, wild sautéed mushrooms, and a tasty mushroom sauce. Last but never the least was the richly flavoured, 8-hours slow-cooked braised lamb shank served on a bed of oriental rice. All three were exceptionally good to taste.

To cap off our wonderful meal, for dessert, we had the delectable red velvet cheesecake and vanilla ganache chocolate dome with brownies, profiteroles, pecan nuts, fruits, and warm chocolate sauce to delight our sweet tooth.

We had a truly superb experience at Three Sixty Restaurant. Doha residents and travellers alike ought to try the excellent experience this high-rise gem has to offer.
