QATAR’S ON A ROLL WITH ALL THE HAPPENING FARE

We are headlong into the holy month of Ramadan and it is nice to see so many related activities. We need to be grateful for these small mercies now that the long shadows of Covid-19 have largely faded into the background. In this issue, we bring you a rich menu of Ramadan offers and a list of activities so that you can have the best of the month-long period.

Our latest issue also dilates on the two important sporting milestones that March brought us in Qatar. The first one relates to the unveiling of Qatar Olympic Committee’s strategy to improve the country’s medal haul on the global stage that the Asian Games will fetch when it is held a second time in Doha in 2030.

The second pertains to the country’s rising stock as a sport destination following the memorable FIFA World Cup Qatar 2022. Moving away from its football prowess, Qatar Cricket Association pulled off a scoop in signing up some of the game's biggest former stars for the inaugural edition of Legends League Cricket and it was a massive hit with the large expatriate population which is hooked to the game.

And talking of sport, you can’t but marvel at Qatar’s greatest sport hero: the irrepressible Nasser Al Attiyah. Belying his age of 52, the rally champion did what he does with amazing regularity — winning a fourth straight Qatar Rally title and 17th overall. More details inside.

As well as making the best of Ramadan, down the road this month, we’ll be bracing up for Eid Al Fitr, too. Just thinking of Eid can transport us to a time of indulgence. But that’s where we come in to reiterate on a nutritious food balance that keeps the pounds at bay with helpful articles in this edition. Go ahead and enjoy!

EYEING GREATER SPORTS GLORY, QATAR UNVEILS 2023-2030 STRATEGY

SPORTS

WHEN Qatari athletes take to the field at the 2030 Asian Games in Doha, the hosts of the world's second largest multi-discipline sports show after the Olympic Games will be aiming for their best medals haul. With seven years to go before Doha hosts the Asian Games for the second time, the Qatar Olympic Committee (QOC) has detailed its plans on how it aims to tap young talent and convert their energetic skills into sporting excellence.

In the presence of the QOC President H E Sheikh Joaan bin Hamad Al-Thani, the QOC unveiled its 2023-2030 strategy during a ceremony held at Marsa Malaz Kempinski Hotel. The strategy aims to achieve three main objectives: ensuring sports excellence, promoting Olympic Movement and achieving comprehensive sports development across the country.

The QOC President was joined by QOC First Vice-President Mohamed Yousef Al-Mana, QOC Second VicePresident Dr Thani bin Abdulrahman Al-Kuwari, QOC Secretary-General Jassim bin Rashid Al-Buanain, and a number of heads of clubs, federations, and sports committees in the State of Qatar attended the glittering ceremony. During the ceremony, QOC honoured the graduates of various training courses and programs and a group of distinguished retired employees. The new strategy comes right after Qatar's greatest show at an Olympic Games - the Tokyo 2020 Games where they managed to bag three medals - two gold in athletics (Mutaz Essa Barshim) and weightlifting (Fares Ibrahim), and a bronze in the beach volleyball competition (Sherif Younes and Ahmed Tijan). Last year, global track and field superstar Barshim won the gold at 2022 World Athletics Championships becoming the first athlete to win the gold in High Jump at three consecutive IAAF Worlds. Barshim's gold journey was backed by Qatari weightlifter Fares who bagged two medals - a gold, and a silver - at the 2022 World Weightlifting Championships.

QOC said to achieve these objectives, it is keen to continue promoting the Olympic Movement by encouraging all segments of society to participate in sporting events, and adopt healthy

lifestyles, extending to include building and developing elite teams of Qatari male and female players to ensure excellence in all sports, including training, management and other technical aspects.

The commercial aspect of sports is also adequately covered in the new strategy. Through hosting major sports tournaments, the QOC also seeks to further promote sports tourism in the country (as it has done in the past), support the national economy, and invest in the sporting legacy left by the major tournaments hosted in Qatar recently.

At the top of QOC’s priorities is the preparations of national teams, especially at the age groups level. This strategy aims to build a strategic framework and develop systematic implementation plans to develop the performance of athletes, provide for

their educational and professional needs. In addition to this, the QOC has pledged to measure, monitor and evaluate their performances to ensure the achievement of interim and main goals.

QOC pays great attention to the development of women’s sports in the State of Qatar. It ensures equal opportunities for both genders to practice sports and participate in major tournaments. Over the past many years, these efforts have resulted to raise Qatari women’s participation and performance in various sports which ensured their participation in the last three editions of the Olympic GamesLondon 2012, Rio de Janeiro 2016, and Tokyo 2020.

Since its establishment on March 14, 1979, the QOC has played a major role in spreading sports awareness in the country, sponsoring and developing the Olympic culture in accordance with the Olympic Charter, and supporting and developing sports performance, which contributed to the great boom in Qatari sports during the past 44 years and many unprecedented achievements at various levels.

In his remarks at the ceremony, the QOC Secretary-General HE Jassim Rashid Al-Buainain said the time is ripe for Qatar to compliment the past successes with more glory in the years to come. Al-Buainain said QOC had stacked up a long history of sporting glory in the last four decades, on home soil and at international sports events.

April 2023 | QH | 7

“This year marks the beginning of a new era in our sports journey, and we now begin a new phase of success after we successfully completed the previous phase of our strategy, in which the Qatar Olympic Committee, with the efforts and cooperation of sports federations and committees, was proudly able to achieve the goals set in

In recent years, Qatari sports successes have not been limited to athletes winning medals only as sports figures have held high positions in various international institutions.

• The President of QOC HE Sheikh Joaan bin Hamad Al-Thani was elected as the First Vice-President of the Association of National Olympic Committees (ANOC), during the 26th General Assembly of the Association in October 2022.

• In addition, the International Olympic Committee (IOC) has selected HE Sheikh Joaan bin Hamad Al-Thani, HE Vice-Chairperson and CEO of Qatar Foundation (QF) Sheikha Hind bint Hamad Al-Thani and QOC’s Secretary-General Jassim bin Rashid Al-Buanain as members of several affiliated committees.

• HE Sheikh Joaan bin Hamad Al-Thani was appointed as a member at the IOC’s Olympism 365, HE Sheikha Hind bint Hamad Al-Thani as a member at the IOC’s Olympic Education Commission and Jassim bin Rashid Al-Buanain as a member at the IOC’s Olympic Program Commission.

• The QOC hosted a camp for the refugee Olympic team that participated in Olympic Games Tokyo 2020 from July 23 to Aug 8, 2021.

• The QOC also hosted a number of meetings between the IOC and the Olympic Council of Asia, and a dialogue meeting between the IOC and the Afghan representatives of the National Olympic Committee and the General Directorate of Physical Education and Sports.

• ** In recognition of its recent successes, the QOC won the National Olympic Committees’ (NOC) Breakthrough Award by the Association of National Olympic Committees on the sidelines of the ANOC General Assembly in Greece in 2021.

the previous strategy,” Al-Buainain said.

"In the past, these efforts were crowned with the great achievements of Team Qatar athletes in continental and international events, the latest of which was the remarkable results obtained in the Olympic Games - Tokyo 2020 - where Qatar won the first Olympic gold medals in its history through weightlifter Faris Ibrahim and high jump star Mutaz Essa Barshim. In addition to this, we also succeeded in winning a bronze medal in beach volleyball through our athletes Sherif Younes and Ahmed Tijan," he added.

"These sporting achievements and previous ones were made thanks to the great support of His Highness the Amir Sheikh Tamim bin Hamad Al-Thani and the directives and keen attention of H E the President of QOC Sheikh Joaan bin Hamad Al-Thani, which had great impact on the prominent role played by the QOC in organising many major sporting events in the State of Qatar," he said.

“Today, we are moving forward with announcing the strategy of the Qatar

Olympic Committee 2023-2030, which is considered an incubator for sports and aims to achieve three main results, which are: ensuring sports excellence, promoting Olympic values, and achieving sports development,” AlBuainain said.

He explained that in the new strategy, QOC seeks to prepare the sports teams and equip them to participate in the Doha 2030 Asian Games.

"In addition to this, we also aim to execute our plans that include delivering progress to possibly hosting the Olympic Games in the future. We are proud to be hosting the World Judo Championships 2023 this year and the 21st FINA World Championsips in 2024 before we switch our attention to staging the Asian Games in 2030," he explained.

Concluding his remarks, Al-Buainain extended thanks to all the members and staff of QOC for their efforts in providing the necessary support to all sports federations and committees in order to achieve the best results in times to come. n

ASIA LIONS ROAR TO DOHA TRIUMPH

SPORTS 10 | QH | April 2023

THE ASIA LIONS , captained by Shahid Afridi, roared to victory in the Skyexch. net Legends League Cricket Masters, thanks to a stunning performance by their opening duo, Upul Tharanga and Tillakaratne Dilshan. In a packed Asian Town Cricket Stadium in Doha, the Lions blew away the World Giants with an emphatic seven-wicket win, clinching the championship with 23 balls to spare.

Tharanga and Dilshan dominated the World Giants attack from the outset, racking up an incredible 115-run partnership in just 10 overs. Dilshan hammered 58 off 42 balls with eight boundaries, while Tharanga smashed 57 off just 28 balls, including five boundaries and three sixes. Tharanga’s outstanding performance throughout the tournament earned him the Player of the Series award.

The Lions had earlier restricted the World Giants to 147 for 4, despite a valiant unbeaten knock of 78 from Jacques Kallis, which included five boundaries and three sixes. Kallis shared a crucial 92-run partnership in 11.1 overs with Ross Taylor, who contributed 32 runs off 33 balls with three boundaries.

The World Giants had won the toss and elected to bat, but they got off to a shaky start as left-arm spinner Abdur Razzak opened the bowling for the Lions and gave away just three runs.

Sohail Tanvir, the Lions’ left-arm pacer, was also in fine form, generating good pace off the wicket. Lendl Simmons managed to edge through the gap in the slip region for the first boundary of the match, but Morne van Wyk was dismissed for a duck by Razzak’s arm ball in the third over. Razzak then claimed the vital wicket of skipper Shane Watson, who was trapped legbefore for a duck.

Tanvir tightened the screws in the fourth over, conceding just two runs, while Simmons smashed a straight six off Razzak’s bowling. However, Simmons was run out by Tanvir with a direct hit to the bowler’s end while attempting a quick single. Kallis eventually picked up his first boundary off Tanvir past extra cover, and the Giants reached 31 for 3

at the end of the powerplay. Kallis and Taylor then focused on building a partnership, scoring singles off Mohammad Hafeez’s seventh over. Afridi, who came on to bowl in the eighth over, gave away just five runs. Razzak bowled his final over brilliantly, frustrating Kallis with his variations and conceding just two runs. When Afridi followed suit with a tight 10th over, the Giants had only mustered 49 runs for 3 at the halfway mark.

Kallis finally hit a six off Afridi in the 12th over, but runs were still hard to come by. Taylor and Kallis reached their 50-run partnership in 7.3 overs, with Kallis smashing Perera for a six to mid-wicket to reach his half-century in the 15th over. Perera bowled Taylor for 32 with the third ball of the 17th over, but Kallis continued to punish the Lions, hitting two consecutive boundaries off the last over to finish unbeaten on 78. In response, the Lions got off to a blazing start, with Tharanga and Dilshan stroking the ball with ease. Dilshan hit Samit Patel’s second and third deliveries for boundaries, while Tharanga smashed the fifth ball for a six over long-on. The duo put on 16 runs in the first over alone, and Tharanga pulled Brett Lee for a boundary in the second over. Powell replaced the expensive Patel, but Tharanga chopped him to the third man for another boundary.

April 2023 | QH | 11

Tino Best, who was introduced for the fourth over, was also hit by Dilshan through the covers for a boundary. The pair recorded their 50 runs partnership in 4.5 overs with Tharanga hitting Powell for a six.

Tharanga smashed Powell’s last ball of the fifth over too for a six to long-on. Dilshan greeted Chris Mpofu with two consecutive boundaries in the sixth over and also scored another off the fourth ball to pile up 72 runs from the powerplay.

Hoping to stop the run flow, World Giants introduced Monty Panesar. He too was not spared by Dilsan who drove him through extra cover for another boundary and took 13 runs off the over. Desperately looking for a breakthrough, Brett Lee was introduced for the eighth over. There was no impact of the bowling change.

In fact, Lee was elegantly pulled for a boundary by Tharanga. In the ninth over, Tharanga reached his halfcentury, pulling Best for a boundary. He had already hit four boundaries and three sixes. The 100-run partnership too came in 8.3 overs.

Asia Lions took the game totally away from World Giants with Dilshan too smashing Best for a boundary to mid-wicket and reaching his half-century in 32 balls with eight boundaries. The 115 runs partnership ended when Lee had Tharanga clean bowled for 57.

Asia Lions needed only 33 runs in the last 10 overs. Dilshan was bowled out by Samit Patel for 58 when only 16 runs were needed for the victory in 41 balls.

Mohammad Hafeez and Misbah Ul Haq steered their team to victory remaining unbeaten with nine runs each. n

It is great fun to be a part of LLC. This is my first LLC Masters tournament. I feel very lucky to be playing cricket at my age, and I feel very privileged to be playing alongside some of the greatest players to have played cricket in the last 20 years or so. Further, it is a great experience to be reunited with Jacques Kallis, who is my favourite cricketer of all time. I was fortunate enough to have played with him for the Sydney Thunder in 2016, and to be able to play with him again I feel very lucky. He is my hero. To be able to play with Paul Collingwood for the first time, with Hashim Amla and my great friend Brett Lee as starting points, Chris Gayle, and the list goes on and on. Acricket rockstar of his time, Pakistan's Shoaib Akhtar is delighted to be part of the Legends League Cricket. The 47-year-old, who once broke the 100mile barrier with his super-fast delivery to opener Nick Knight during a 2003 World Cup match against England, said the cricket league featuring the game's stars from a by-gone era is here to stay.

"The LLC is a wonderful tournament. The tournament has become larger than life. The league will start to get more competitive now going forward with the recently-retired players who might join the league in coming seasons, the league will only grow," Akhtar said in an interview during the 10-day tournament played among three teams - Asia Lions, World Giants and India Maharajas.

play against these guys. The platform is providing me an opportunity to meet my old friends. It’s a burst of memories when we all are playing together. We share old anecdotes from our playing time. We share a good bond and give our best so that the fans can enjoy,” he added.

The 'Rawalpindi Express' said: "Unfortunately I injured myself while diving and twisted my knee here in Doha. If I were not injured, I would have definitely bowled my 4 overs and tried to add value to the team. But last year I made sure that I played every game and bowled 4 overs. It's about how much I can participate and make it big for this league. I am just a little contributor to make this league better and enhance the value of my team.”

amazing. We are all having fun. We are playing cricket with our old friends and teammates, those with whom we have won the World Cup, played ODIs, Test matches, and even the IPL; in a way, we are playing with all the legends. It all brings back memories of when we were playing together, and everyone is enjoying themselves. The whole purpose of the LLC Masters is to spend as much time as possible playing together and entertaining the crowds." Australian cricket greats with multiple ICC trophies under their belts, fast bowler Brett Lee and all-rounder Shane Watson also seemed thrilled to be part of the LLC extravaganza. An intimidating fast bowler from 1999 to 2012 when he retired, Lee - who played for World Giants - said he was chuffed to take a wicket at the ripe age of 46. He played a crucial role in the victory of the World Giants over India Maharajas in their opening game, bowling a spell of just giving away 17 runs in three overs and picking up the crucial wicket of Stuart Binny in the final over of the match to give his team the victory. He seemed excited about his performance and said: “Any wicket that you get at an age of 46 is always special. I have worked pretty hard leading into this mega tournament. I have done some training and bowling in the nets. I am ready to play again and I am excited about it. The LLC is a wonderful tournament."

He added: “We all are here to have fun and showcase the great game of cricket to our fans around the world. I would like to thank everyone who has brought this league together. I never thought something like this would be possible. It’s great fun,” he added. “LLC is definitely here to stay. It’s a great platform for sportspersons like us to showcase our game here in Qatar where big crowds have turned up to see the game. I am looking forward to seeing more fans coming to the stadium to watch the games live.” Speaking about playing this season, Watson, 41, said: "It is great fun to be a part of LLC. This is my first LLC Masters tournament. I feel very lucky to be playing cricket at my age, and I feel very privileged to be playing alongside some of the greatest players to have played cricket in the last 20 years or so. LEGENDS LEAGUE CRICKET

GOES ABOVE AND BEYOND TO DRIVE POPULARITY OF CRICKET IN QATAR

Legends League Cricket (LLC) in its endeavour to popularize the sport of cricket in the sports capital of Asia –Doha, organized a fun cricket match for local kids at the Doha Corniche. The match was a part of LLC Masters’ initiative of popularizing cricket on the streets of Doha.

Sensing the ever-growing popularity of cricket in Doha, many local kids were invited to try out their hand at the sport and were seen sporting cricket gear, which tweaked the interest of the locals and also got them participating in the match as spectators.

Further, to the amazement of the kids, a surprise came in the form of S Sreesanth who is playing for the India Maharajas in the LLC Masters joined in for a fun game of cricket with the kids. The former Indian pace spearhead not only indulged in both aspects of the game but was also seen being super pumped and competitive during the event.

Speaking about the event Mr Raman Raheja, Co-Founder and CEO of Legends League Cricket said: “Qatar has risen to the occasion with their hospitality and the love that we have received from the people has just left us short of words. This is our own way of ensuring that the culture of cricket that we are trying to build in Qatar penetrates across levels. We are grateful to all the legends who have also come forward and participated in all our initiatives.”

thought something like this would be possible. It’s great fun."

On being asked if there is any kind of banter that goes on between rivals of yesteryears who are now playing together, Watson laughed and said, "It is all fun banter. We feel very fortunate and privileged to be playing at a tournament like LLC. I was talking to Harbhajan Singh, who is one of my good friends now having played with him at CSK, and we were pinching ourselves to be able to be in and around a team environment with some of the people that we have played with before, for me to be able to play with some new players for the first time, and some whom I have only admired to be able to play against them. It is an amazing opportunity and we are all just loving every minute of it because of the days of being in a team environment like this, playing and trying to see where our skills are at, where our bodies are at, it is a lot of fun."

Talking about the competitiveness in the tournament and among teams, Watson said: "We are all very competitive in our own ways and do not want to just be here to be beaten. So, to reach the top of your game, it’s just inside you that you are competitive. When you see the opposition being very competitive as well, no one is taking a backward step at all. So, yes, it is a lot of fun, no doubt. We, the World Giants, had an incredibly fun time on and off the field."

On being asked, despite being in such prime form, why did he consider retiring from cricket? To this, Watson said: "I obviously love playing cricket, but the biggest challenge has always been my body and being fit. As it is now, that is why I did not bowl in this tournament, unfortunately, because of a bit of a niggle. But, batting-wise and skill-wise, I still feel I am batting as well as I have. The preparation that I have had in the lead-up to the LLC Masters has been five weeks of just getting into the nets and finding my groove. So, batting on nice wickets is a lot of fun. It is what I know better than anything else in my life, cricket and batting and it is not as physically demanding compared to bowling. So, it’s great." n

AGELESS AL-ATTIYAH BAGS ANOTHER TITLE ON HOME SOIL

THE QATARI OFF-ROAD SUPERSTAR AND HIS TRUSTED CO-DRIVER MATHIEU BAUMEL KEEP GETTING BETTER IN THE 2023 SEASON

DESPITE the age of 52 years, Qatar’s Nasser Saleh Al-Attiyah keeps getting better with each passing event. In mid-January, he won the Dakar Rally crown for the fifth time with his Andorra-based co-driver Mathieu Baumel. In February, there were more records for the off-road superstar and his trusted co-driver: Al-Attiyah won the 44th edition of the Qatar International Rally 2023, the second round of the 43rd Middle East Rally Championship (MERC). By virtue of his spectacular win behind the wheel of a Volkswagen Polo GTI, Al Attiyah won his fourth consecutive Qatar Rally title after 2019, 2021 and 2022 (the 2020 edition was not held due to the COVID-19 pandemic). The Qatari champion captured his 17th Qatar Rally title, raising the number of his victories to an astonishing 83 out of 225 rounds in MERC history.

Continuing with his superb early season form, Al-Attiyah and co-driver Baumel clinched victory in the car category in their Toyota GR DKR Hilux at the end of a pulsating Qatar International Baja in March. Al-Attiyah controlled proceedings through the demanding last stage to take the day’s win by 10min 18sec from Chinese rival Guoyu Zhang and that was sufficient for the Qatari to

Zhang and his Spanish co-driver Oriol Mena rounded off the podium places in their Baic ORC BJ40. Al-Attiyah was pleased with his performance on home soil: “It was a good Baja. The first day I had a small margin and the second day I pushed a lot. I thank Jean-Marc (Fortin) from Overdrive Racing for bringing me a new car and thanks to Qatar Airways for flying this car over very swiftly so that I was able to compete here. I am very glad to win here again in my home race. I always want to compete in every international event in Qatar and it’s great to bounce back with a win after my big crash in Abu Dhabi.” He added: "The first stage was not easy because the road book was not really clear but we made two mistakes that cost 10 minutes. On the next two sections we pushed and were quite happy.”

Runner-up Krotov added: “After 35km, I had to stop and change the tyres. After that we lost a little power and didn’t have a big speed. One turbo was not working. But the race was good and I enjoyed the stages.”

Competitors tackled 224.96km on the final day and the route was split into four sections of 33.73km, 28.51km, 43.23km and 113.20km by three noncompetitive transfer zones.

Overdrive Racing’s Juan Cruz Yacopini and Daniel Oliveras moved up to fourth overall on the final stage in the third of four Toyotas.

The experienced Meshari Al-Thefiri began the final day second in T3 behind his usual co-driver Nasser Al-Kuwari and the Kuwaiti delivered a solid stage performance to set the fastest time and sneak through to win the FIA T3 category for lightweight prototype machines on his first race

with a new MCE-5 T3M and Oriol Vidal looking after the navigation. Al-Thefiri also finished fifth overall. He said: “We managed to finish. It’s so difficult with the road book to know if you are out of the route. It is not easy. The car was very good. We caught Nasser (AlKuwari) about 20km from the start, so I managed my pace then and I knew what my advantage was. I am very happy that this is the first win for the MCE-5. Hard luck to Nasser.”

With Nasser Al-Kuwari and French co-driver François Cazalet dropping precious minutes on the stage with the lack of brakes and punctures, that opened the door for the Qatari’s brother Abdulaziz to snatch second place in the category in his QMMF Rally Team Can-Am. On his debut in this type of motor sport, the former winner of the Qatar International Rally also finished in an excellent sixth in the general classification. Nasser came home in seventh and third in T3.

“From the first 20km, we had one flat tire and we changed it,” said Nasser AlKuwari. “Then we caught Meshari and

we had another flat tire. We changed it. We caught him again and tried to pass him and then we had a third one. Then we had no chance to win and we just tried to get the car to the finish. We also had brake issues. But I am happy with my performance.”

Abdulaziz Al-Kuwari said: “Very happy to finish second. I would love to have won T3 but it is not easy after the delay with the puncture on the first day. Unlucky for Nasser to come with the third puncture. I took it safely. I wanted to do all the mileage. I want to transfer to this kind of rallies. I prefer this type of rallies. You don’t have to drive every week.”

The French crew of Jeremie Warnia and Loic Minaudier managed to overhaul Brazil’s Cristiano de Sousa Batista and Portuguese co-driver Fausto Moto to secure a narrow victory in the FIA T4 category in their Polaris RXR 1000 R. They finished eighth overall and beat their Can-Am rivals by 2min 10sec on the final day to secure a winning margin of just 30.3 seconds.

Seventeen minutes of time penalties for missing route waypoints had pushed Pau Navarro down the T4 rankings after the third stage in his FN Speed Team Can-Am. He climbed back to third on the final day.

Saudi Arabia’s Khalid Al-Feraihi and French co-driver Sébastien Delaunay boosted their FIA Middle East Baja Cup title aspirations with valuable points for finishing 11th overall in their Nissan Patrol behind the 10th-placed Ronan Chabot in his Overdrive Toyota.

Krzysztof Holowczyc (Mini JCR Rally Plus) and Ahmed Al-Shegawi (Can-Am) retired on Friday after their mechanical issues. n

Deja vu: Polish bike star

Dabrowski retains title in Qatar

Qatar is very lucky for me. A second win here in a row. I like to come here because it is a great experience and I can improve my navigation and my riding. I was sick during the final stage after spending a night in the air conditioning. It was so difficult just to ride the bike on the second part of the stage.

KONRAD DABROWSKI showed once again he loves riding in Qatar. Dabrowski retained his motorcycle title in Qatar with a polished performance that saw him win every stage on his KTM. It was the KTM Duust rider's second successive win in Qatar. The Pole won the last stage by 6min 49sec to record a winning margin over Great Britain’s Robert Wallace of 31min 04.8sec. He also claimed the honours of finishing as the first FIM Junior. A number of riders got lost but Dabrowski who exhibited calmness under pressure.

Dabrowski said: “Qatar is very lucky for us. A second win here in a row. I like to come here because it is a great experience and I can improve my navigation and my riding. I was sick today on the stage after spending a night in the air conditioning. It was so difficult just to ride the bike on the second part of the stage. I am very tired but happy to win this race. I was super tired when I finished but it’s a great feeling to win.”

He added: “I like coming to Qatar because I have a lot of experience and I can work on my navigation and my riding there. I won the Prologue on Thursday and was able to choose the ninth starting position for SS2. It was a good position to catch the leaders and gain as much time as possible, which I managed to do before refuelling. I understood then that the result would be there. In the second part of the special, I opened the track and it was a very nice day. With Martin Chalmers dropped out of contention on the final morning, the battle for the final place on the podium swung in favour of the Dutch female racer Mirjam Pol. The KTM rider climbed from eighth to third to finish as the top Women. She edged out Andrew Houlihan for the last podium place by just 66.4 seconds, although the Australian had the consolation of winning the Veterans’ class and finishing a fine fourth.

A delighted Pol said: “When you start eighth overall and you finish third it is a big surprise. I had all the route waypoints and when I arrived I only saw two lines and that’s when I realised I had achieved a very good result. I had a good pace in the race but it is mainly thanks to my good navigation that I am in third position. For two days, I marked all the waypoints. In any case, it's a nice surprise!”

Emirati Mohammed Al-Ramani climbed to fifth at the expense of sixth-place Canadian Jonathan Finn. Mohammed Al-Balooshi was the championship leader after the opening round in Saudi Arabia and the Emirati reached the finish in eighth.

Several riders were handed time back overnight by FIM officials for delays on Friday helping at the scene of other competitors’ accidents. Oran O’Kelly received a credit of 53 minutes and Alex McInnes and Simon Marcic were also handed time back. McInnes went on to finish 10th overall after setting the second quickest time behind Dabrowski on the final stage. Marcic came home in third place on the day and finished 14th.

FIM – QUADS

Emirati Sultan Al-Balooshi did not restart after his problems on Friday. Arnoud Dom was the unofficial winner of the quad category after Haitham Al-Tuwaijri and Abdulaziz Al-Ahli failed to finish. Mansoor Al-Suwaidi finished second.

The next round of the FIM Bajas World Cup is the Baja TT Dehesa Extremadura that takes place in Spain from April 14-16. n

One of the most notable items on the menu is the “Samundari Khazana,” an appetiser platter featuring spicy jumbo prawns, succulent fish tikkas, and kebabs, all cooked to perfection on a charcoal grill. The flavours and spices used in this dish are truly unparalleled.

As we savoured our appetisers, we were torn between the many tempting options on the main course menu. An Indian culinary journey would be incomplete without biryani and so we opted for Jhinga Biryani, a medium-spiced curry that perfectly blends prawns and pulao rice. The Madras Fish Curry, made with fresh hammour, coconut gravy, mustard, and curry sauce, is another standout dish that left us craving for more – a true star, if you ask us. Even their vegetarian options like the Dal Makhni, simmered overnight with butter, had us in a state of buttery bliss.

And for dessert, we indulged in their delicious bowls of Indian sweets, from the classic Gulab Jamuns to the Malai Pista Kulfi. They certainly know how to end the night on a sweet note!

Let there be no anxiety!

QH ON THE 2023 WORK BY A WORLD RENOWNED AUTHOR THAT DILIGENTLY GOES TO THE ROOT OF THE PROBLEM AND RETURNS WITH SOLUTIONS

Paul McKenna is a highly acclaimed international author whose works have sold over 12 million copies and been translated into 32 languages. He is an expert hypnotherapist, reputed for his success in treating challenging issues. Paul McKenna has been hailed as one of “the world’s most significant contemporary self-help gurus” by The Times, and is the most successful nonfiction author in the UK. His latest work, Freedom From Anxiety is making waves since being released early this year. Scientific evidence now proves that specific thinking and behaviour patterns can lead to measurable improvements in individuals’ ability to cope with challenges and enhance their overall well-being. The research further confirms that adopting such a mindset can be learned, much like any other habit. Paul McKenna points out that in today’s challenging times, many individuals struggle with low confidence, motivation, and determination.

Freedom From Anxiety aims to equip readers with proven techniques that can transform their lives for the better, promoting greater happiness and fulfillment within even just 90 minutes. It helped that McKenna chose the New Year, which always a good time to make good on resolutions, to launch the work. The book is divided into three sections, with the first part focussing on anxiety relief techniques; part two looking at building inner resilience; and the last part, focussing on making room for optimism, joy and creativity. Freedom From Anxiety explains how tackling anxiety helps us to build resilience, which makes us better equipped to make the most of the good days and cope well with the bad. “Ultimately, it makes you a happier person, who no longer sees threat at

every turn; someone whose life feels richer, who is able to see and grasp opportunities, and who others enjoy spending time with,” McKenna points out.

Through a series of simplifying complex situations and revealing techniques, the hypnotherapist explains that no matter how much it might feel like life is sometimes spiralling beyond our control, we can still be the master of our own emotions.

Picking up from daily life, McKenna describes the different ways anxiety affects us. “If you worry from the minute you wake up and can’t relax because you fear that if you do you will miss something, or if you can’t switch off, you are suffering from anxiety. If you’re forever running disaster movies in your mind, have a constant feeling of foreboding and a knot your stomach, if even when things are going fine you tell yourself it won’t last, that’s anxiety too. If your quest for perfection drives you to high standards but you don’t enjoy it, as you are looking for faults, that is also anxiety”.

The good news is that Freedom From

Anxiety is here to help you achieve just that. For a quick do, we have picked McKenna’s following technique from it for the benefit of Qatar Happening readers. McKenna assures that it helps to achieve immediate relief from anxiety, using deceptively simple but stunningly effective Psycho-Sensory and Neuro-Linguistic Programming exercises, where touch and visualisation transform the way that you feel.

The Freeze Frame technique

• Read through this technique several times and practice the whole sequence as many times as you wish until you know you have memorised it well enough that it is almost automatic when you actually need to use it. First of all, check how your anxiety level is on a scale of one to 10.

• Become aware that you are experiencing a stressful feeling in your body or that your mind is racing.

• Put your hand on your heart and focus your energy on this area. Take at least three slow and gentle breaths into your heart, maintaining your focus on the feeling of your hand in the centre of your chest.

• Now, recall a time when you felt really, really good – a time you felt love, joy or real happiness! Return to that memory as if you are back there again right now. See what you saw, hear what you heard, and feel how good you felt.

• As you feel this good feeling in your body, imagine your heart could speak to you. Ask your heart how you could take better care of yourself in this moment and in this situation.

• Listen to what your heart says in answer and act on it as soon as you can. n

WONDERS OF SUPER SEEDS FAMILY

MUNIRA RAHAT EXPLAINS THE UTILITY OF INCLUDING THESE IN OUR DAILY DIET

All grains and nuts are seeds, and six edible seeds are especially potent. They may be small, but we should not equate their size with stature. Having said that there is no exact definition of what makes a ‘’superfood’’, they are considered to be nutrient powerhouses that provide large quantities of antioxidants, phytochemicals (chemicals in plants responsible for colours and smells), vitamins and minerals.

SIX SUPER SEEDS

Seeds contain all the starting materials necessary to develop into complex plants. Because of this, they are extremely nutritious. Seeds are a great source of fiber. They also contain healthy mono-saturated fats, poly-unsaturated fats and many important vitamins, minerals and antioxidants. Flax seeds, hemp seeds, sesame seeds, pumpkin seeds, chia seeds and sunflower seeds all punch far above their weight in nutritional value. When consumed as part of a healthy diet, these seeds can help reduce blood sugar, cholesterol and blood pressure. This article will describe the nutritional contents and health benefits of the healthiest seeds you can eat.

FLAX SEEDS

Flaxseeds are also known as linseeds. With its mild, nutty flavour and crisp, crunchy consistency, flaxseed is a versatile ingredient that enhances the taste and texture of almost any recipe.

Flaxseed is particularly high in thiamine, a B vitamin that plays a key role in energy metabolism as wee as cell function. It’s also a great source of copper, which is involved in brain development, immune health and iron metabolism.

One serving of flaxseed provides a good amount of protein, fiber and omega-3 fatty acids. It helps lower the risk of some cancers, help maintain a healthy weight, and reduce cholesterol and blood pressure.

One way to use this seed is by mixing it into morning smoothies. It also makes excellent addition to pancake batter, homemade veggie burgers and even overnight oats.

CHIA SEEDS

Chia seeds are edible seeds of Salvia hispancia, a flowering plant in the mint family. Chia seeds are oval and gray with black and white spots, having a diameter of around 2 millimeters.

Chia’s have a mild, nutty flavour that works well to complement both sweet and savory dishes. They are subtle in their tastes, though some find the taste to be similar to a poppy seeds.

Chia seeds have gained attention as an excellent source of omega-3 fatty acid. They also are an excellent source of dietary fiber and contain protein and minerals including iron, calcium, magnesium and zinc. Emerging research suggests that including chia seeds as part of a healthy eating style may help improve cardiovascular risk factors such as lowering cholesterol, triglycerides and blood pressure.

Chia’s can be eaten raw or prepared in a number of dishes. Sprinkle ground or whole chia seeds on cereal, rice, yoghurt or vegetables. Chia seeds are very absorbent and develop a gelatinous texture when soaked in water making it easy to mix them into cooked cereal or other dishes.

HEMP SEEDS

Hemp seeds also known as ‘hearty seeds’ are an excellent source of vegetarian protein. Hemp is one of the few plants that are complete protein sources, meaning they contain all the essential amino acids that your body cannot make. These small, brown seeds are rich in protein, fiber and healthy

HEALTH
50 | QH | April 2023

fatty acids, including omega 3s and omega 6s. They have antioxidant effects and may reduce symptoms of numerous ailments, improving the health of heart, skin and joints. Hemp seeds can be incorporated into the diet by sprinkling whole or ground seeds on cereal or yoghurt, adding these to smoothies, baking with hemp, making hemp milk or sprinkling on salad.

SESAME SEEDS

Sesame is tiny, oil-rich seed that grow in pods on the Sesamum plant. They have been used in folk medicine for thousands of years. Un-hulled seeds have outer, edible husk intact, while hulled seeds come without the husk. The hull gives the seeds a golden-brown hue. “THERE NEEDS TO BE A DRIVE AND PASSION FOR CHANGE”

PERSONAL TRAINER PRABH SOHI TELLS QH WHAT DRIVES HER THE MOST AND SETTING REALISTIC GOALS

Prabh Sohi, a personal trainer based in Doha, with over 20 years of experience, became involved in fitness due to her career as a police officer in England. In order to meet the required fitness levels for the job, she began exercising regularly, and found that it helped her mental health on particularly stressful days. She quickly realised the benefits of exercise not only for physical appearance, but also for the mind.

“This is what drives me the most: the knowledge that even a small amount of movement can help your mental health,” she says.

Prabh became a personal trainer to gain more knowledge about the body, correct exercise form, and nutrition. She began assisting friends and family with their exercise plans, and her client base grew through word of mouth.

Prabh’s goal when she first became qualified as a personal trainer was not to make it a career, but to gain more knowledge and share the benefits of training on mental health with others.

“The more clients I saw get physically stronger and becoming more resilient inspired me to want to do it more.”

Prabh is a level 3 trained personal trainer and specialises in weight loss, cardiovascular fitness, and strength training. She trains clients on a one-onone basis, as well as running 30-minute High Intensity Interval Training (HIIT) classes twice a week for all levels at Y Village 2.

54 | QH | April 2023 MIND YOUR HEALTH

So how does she develop personalised fitness plans for clients?

Each fitness plan is tailored to the client’s goals and what they hope to achieve through the sessions.

“I use a questionnaire to get a better understanding of their weekly activities, how much time they have and also if there are any barriers to them doing the exercises,” she says.

Prabh feels age, current weight, and activity levels are crucial factors to consider when designing a plan. With regard to nutrition and diet, Prabh emphasises that exercise and nutrition go hand in hand. She advises her clients on the foods they should be eating to achieve their goals and believes it is important to get the body moving to increase life expectancy and quality of life.

“Life is also for living so I am a big advocate of eating a little of what we like and having a meal out and having chocolate in moderation,” she suggests. Prabh has worked with a diverse range of clients, from those who want to lose weight to those who simply want to be able to get off the sofa unaided. She trains individuals and couples who motivate each other. But she considers tracking to be important.

“For some, it will be when I can see

certain weights are becoming too easy so I will up the weight size, for others it will be when they have hit a plateau in their weight loss. Progress is very different for every client so there is no set time for adjustments in the plan to be made, these are done when the client is hitting certain goals and we need to move to the next one,” she points out.

When asked what the most challenging aspects of being a personal trainer were, Prabh felt it was managing the client expectations.

“We are all so different. There is no quick fix to changing our body shape or getting fitter, it’s all about consistency and being honest. I don’t believe in fad diets; yes, they may work in the short term but they are not sustainable,” she proffers.

What about those considering a career in personal training?

Prabh advises doing it for the right reasons.

“It isn’t all about the money, there needs to be a drive and passion to see people changing and doing it for themselves. Do your research and make sure you pick a good company to train with who will provide you with the correct knowledge and be there to support you when you start your journey as a personal trainer,” she concludes. n

But if you’re inclined to history and cultures, then Cappadocia is the must-visit place. A region that offers visitors a deep dive into what life was like in ancient times.

Cappadocia (Kapadokya in Turkish) is a semi-arid region in Anatolia province of central Turkiye.

It’s a popular tourist destination due to its unique geographical features, i.e., clusters of tall coneshaped rocks (fairy chimneys) formed due to geological processes some millions of years ago, now a unique valley famous for scenic hot air balloon rides. There are other activities and sights that make this place worth visiting.

So let’s have a glimpse of them!

The whole place is steeped in history i.e., underground cities, museums, horse stables, ventilation shafts and the vintage mud caves that give you an insight into everyday life back in the day. The ancient architecture of the caves has been carefully preserved, even the shops are made inside these historic caves. A shopping experience like never before and a unique opportunity to get traditional items like rugs, carpets, and jewelry.

Pottery is the must have thing in Cappadocia. The visitors can also observe the process of pottery making in real-time – a great way to immerse yourself in the local culture and support local artisans.
