The growing trend of world’s library design demands to update the design of Yogyakarta public library. As Yogyakarta is a city of students and culture, it is suitable to combine the library with art and cultutral learning center and using interactive architecture, which is a product of spatial creative thinking and technology, as design approach.

QANITA QAMARANI

ARCHITECTURE PORTFOLIO

2017

Site Jalan Rasuna Said, Jakarta

Located strategically in Rasuna Said Central Business District, Jakarta brings both benefits and threat to BPJS tower because the surrounding buildings are also office towers. This becomes a challenge, how the BPJS tower can later become an iconic building which depicts the BPJS values. Another challenge also emerges from the relatively narrow site. Basically, the design is divided in 3 parts — podium, office tower, and the crown. These 3 parts each represent 3 BPJS vision points. Podium, as ‘a firm foundation’, is designed with a rigid vertical blinds. The shading design on the office tower, which speaks for ‘productivity’, is considering thermal comfort to build a productive working space. Meanwhile, the crown is designed to be a point of interest because it represents ‘social welfare’.

Facade design The iconic concern from the design guideline is achieved by the curve line of the building’s facade. The curve line is also chosen to unite with the oval shape of the building. ACADEMIC PROJECTS

ARCHITECTURE PORTFOLIO

2017

Site Giwangan crossroad, Yogyakarta

The LRT station is located at the junction of Jalan Imogiri Timur with the Southern Ring Road where there is also Giwangan Bus Terminal on the north side. This site has great potential in developing an integrated mode of transportation. Supported by the existence of Giwangan Bus Terminal, this LRT station can facilitate the mobility of local people and those who will visit this area.

p.24

ACADEMIC PROJECTS

Urban strategy Problems The existing condition Giwangan crossroad is quite wide and arid. Pedestrian is not wellaccomodated by the sidewalks. Crossing in this area is also uncomfortable because of the crowded vehicles. When the elevated station is built above the road, the need for pedestrian access increases. Circulation at the crossroad becomes very crowded due to this situation.

QANITA QAMARANI

The pedestrian circulation is lifted up to separate from the vehicle’s circulation. The main pedestrian entrance is located on the north side, integrated with the existing bus terminal park. This entrance is also intended for those who drives private vehicle to the station, so they can park their vehicle in the bus terminal parking area.

ARCHITECTURE PORTFOLIO

A roundabout with greeneries is built in the center of this wide crossroad to reduce urban heat island. Based on transportation studies, a roundabout can also make traffic flow more smoothly than a traffic light.

Developing an underground space is the most likely design solution. Without adding some builiding on the ground level, Malioboro Street streetscape will remain the same since it is a historical site. Electrical wires which was irregular and interfere with a view of the street can be trimmed by passing on a bridge. In addition to enhanced visual quality also simplify maintenance. Air filtration system contained on the bridge can help reduce the level of pollution due to emissions of vehicles. The addition of vegetation on parklet and bridges can lower the temperature in the area during the day. Afterall, the addition of opposite bridges between parklet not only can be used as a crossing bridge but also can improve the interaction between street vendors.

A 12 days hands-on workshop was held by a collaboration of Universitas Gadjah Mada and The University of Sydney. The workshop took place in Bali and Yogyakarta. In the first 3 days, the program was all about the basic theory of bamboo and designing bamboo pavilion and wide-span bamboo structure. The rest of few days were filled with the construction of the design. The bamboo pavilion design should be easy to move and possible to build, while the widespan bamboo structure is 18 meter length x 5 meter width. The truss must be welldesigned to get that long. Many ideas of using whether plane or space truss pops up during the discussion. However, in our design, we used space truss to get a strong yet aesthetic structure.

In order to make the huge bamboo structure happen in last 10 days, the whole team from UGM and The University of Sydney were divided into 3 big groups. Each group made each truss and the frame cover sheet of the structure. After the completion of the trusses, every group made one pavilion. The design of the pavilion was chosen from the first day of workshop with structure assistance from Effan Adhiwira. WORKSHOP ACTIVITIES

At the end of the course, we had a task (studio project) to solve a design problem, which related to the needs of the art world. Knowledge and experience from previous activities inspired us, which leads to create innovative ideas and concepts in designing. Participants are divided into 3 big groups. Each group has a responsibilty to decorate a part of an alley in Kasongan with the given materials. As Kasongan is well-known for its pottery products, the materials are broken pottery, bamboo from surrounding environment, and pieces of cloth provided by the committee. Since it was almost Indonesia’s independence day, the theme of the design was an independence day festival. WORKSHOP ACTIVITIES

Along the alley, the broken pottery was painted in monochrome in order to make the red and white color stands out. It was aslo given some lights inside the pottery to give a new life to the broken pieces during the night.

In group A design, this installation serves as a gate to the decorated alley. To make a grand entrance, the bamboo arc was built higher than the other installation. It was also decorated in red and white clothes to bring the independence day’s vibe.
