Thanksgiving fundraiser for Sanpete Pantry

Utah’s general pheasant hunting season runs from Nov. 6 to Dec. 5, 2021. We release thousands of pheasants on various wildlife management areas around the state each week during the general-season hunt. The number of pheasants and where they can be found will depend on where you are hunting in Utah.

In general, pheasants like areas with nearby fields of wheat or corn that provide feed for them. These birds are good at hiding in brush, so hunting in brushy areas with a well-trained dog will in-

crease your chances of success. Walking along ditch banks or fence lines is also a good hunting strategy. Pheasants typically prefer to run rather than fly away, so if you walk along these areas, you are more likely to drive them out into the open, where they will flush.

Where to find California and Gambel’s quail Utah’s general quail hunting season runs from Nov. 6 to Dec. 31. Hunting quail also differs in each area of the state.

California and Gambel’s quail are hunted using similar methods — just in different habitats. When hunting Gambel’s quail, look for Joshua trees, dry washes and draws with black brush or desert almond. Governor joins ‘Road to Recovery’ roundtable with Goldman Sachs 10,000 Small Businesses SALT LAKE CITY – On Friday, Gov. Joel Richard Erickson 1952 – 2021

Joel Richard Erickson returned peacefully to his Heavenly Father from his home in Moroni, UT on Oct. 28, 2021. He was born to Dixie M. McKinnon and Joel H. Erickson on June 5, 1952 in Provo UT, as the oldest of 4 siblings.

Joel married the mother of his 8 children, Lynda J. Sutherland on Dec. 14, 1975 in Denver Colorado. Joel and Lynda were divorced in 1992. Joel then married Judith (Judie) A. Kofford Johnson on May 15, 1993 and they spent his remaining 28 years happily together, enjoying traveling and camping, visiting their children and grandchildren, and their service in The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints.

Joel was soft-spoken, intelligent, kind, humble, funny, and loving. He was incredibly skilled and used his skills to bless all those who came into contact with him. He took many roles in his life including: Scout Leader, Mentor,

Religious Leader, Master Carpenter, Handyman, Military leader, Father, Grandfather, and Loving Husband. He was a man of few words but expressed the depth and beauty of his soul through the careful intention he put into everything he did. There was seemingly nothing he couldn’t fix, figure out, or build.

Joel had an unmatched work ethic and applied himself fully to all that he did. He was drafted into the army in 1972 and spent 2 years as a Spe-

cialist E4 of the 124th Maintenance Battalion 2nd Armored Division.

His mechanic skills were put to use fixing tanks, jeeps, and machinery for the troops. He then served 37 years in the National Guard as a Sergeant over the Maintenance Section, during which time he built roads in Utah, and for native communities in both Panama and Alaska.

He worked for 31 years as a mechanic/electrician in Deer Creek Coal Mine.

Joel truly lived in the image of Christ. He was always of service to others, his family, his country, his community, and the Lord.

He had a strong testimony and faith in The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints. He served on the High Council, as a counselor in the Bishopric, and in Baptistry at the Manti Temple. He oversaw the Family History Center and among many other church callings he especially enjoyed serving in the scouting program.

Joel is preceded in death by his brother Fredrick Erickson, and grandson David Erickson Jr. Joel is survived by his wife Judie Erickson; children Andrew (Sarah) Erickson, Benjamin (Sarah) Erickson, Carolyn Kellogg, David Erickson, Eric (Erika) Erickson, Forrest (Hanna) Erickson, Greggory Erickson, and Holly Erickson; stepchildren Lorinda Anthony, Tyler (Kristen) Johnson, Brett (Marrisa) Johnson; 23 grandchildren, and Siblings Becky Erickson and Ray Erickson.

Family and friends are invited to celebrate Joel’s life at the Moroni Stake Center (82 N Center Street, Moroni) Friday Nov. 5, 2021 at 11AM. Viewings will be held Thu. Nov. 4th from 6-8PM, and Fri. Itchy Feet F

riends and acquaintances of mine from other places sometimes say to me, “How can you live in a place like Sanpete? It’s in the middle of nowhere. There’s nothing there.”

My response is, “Those criticisms you’re making are actually very good reasons to live in Sanpete. (even though they’re not accurate). And besides that, I’ve found that you can get to anywhere in the entire world from right here in Sanpete County, Utah.”

I’ve been getting “itchy feet” lately. I feel like I need to take a trip somewhere for a few days.

It’s not that I’m sick of Sanpete. Maybe it’s just that I have everyone’s wardrobe memorized and I’d like to see different people wearing different clothing. I don’t know.

The pandemic has put a kibosh on international travel.

There are so many challenges and obstacles to overcome to successfully fly and get into other countries it seems. But it is possible.

I know a couple of people who have just returned from vacations. One little group spent a week in a resort in the Caribbean and had a good time.

Some others just got back from a cruise which included Italy and Greece. COVID-19 kept them from one port-ofcall and affected some of their travel experience. Others I know have been places or are going soon. They’re brave.

Even though I just got my newly renewed passport in the mail recently (applied for in May), I’m not quite ready to pull the trigger on a trip out of the country.

The most adventuresome plan I’ve made for travel recently is to book a room in Las Vegas for October of 2022. It’s not like me to plan ahead a year in advance for something. But when the football game was announced for BYU versus Notre Dame at Allegiant Stadium, I thought, “Why Not?” (Believe it or not, rooms are already scarce and pricey for that weekend) Trips make for good memories — for the most part. Traveling away from home creates a segment of time in life that is out of the ordinary which becomes a source of stories and remembrances for often a lifetime.

Over the years, we’ve done some traveling with family and friends. That can be risky. Mark Twain famously said, “I have found out that there ain’t no surer way to find out whether you like people or hate them than to travel with them.”

Sometimes you wonder if a friendship or family relationship is going to be ruined as the result of a trip together. We’ve been fortunate, that hasn’t happened.

Some years ago, we took a relatively quick trip with another couple who wanted company for the first part of a longer trip. We flew to Detroit, rented a car, and put over a thousand miles on it.

Traveling puts people into each other’s lives on an intimate basis. You discover meal schedules and food preferences, sleep time needs and habits (whether people snore or not, in some instances), and how people act during stretches of long drives.

Once I decided to join in, I was okay with all the singing in the car. The woman of the

other couple (let’s call her Colleen — since that’s her name) wanted to sing about everything. When it was raining she’d say, “How many songs do we know about “rain.” Then we’d sing. When the sun was shining it was, “How many songs do we know about “sunshine.” Then we’d sing. Etcetera, etcetera, etcetera.

Another travel quotation that I like (and there are a lot of them) is from Susan Heller.

She says, “When preparing to travel, lay out all your clothes and all your money. Then take half the clothes and twice the money.”

Upon arriving in Detroit, we found out at the baggage claim area that Colleen’s bag didn’t arrive with us. I noticed right away that the airlines never use the word “lost” when referring to the luggage. The phrase, “luggage not available upon arrival” is what they use.

I thought of what comedian Bob Hope used to say — something about that he’s been to almost as many places as his luggage. The baggage people for Delta really were very nice and gave each of us, even if we had our bags, an overnight kit which included a one size fits all tee shirt. We gave all our tee shirts to Colleen.

Colleen wondered whether anyone would notice that she would appear in the same tee shirt in every picture for the entire trip. That would be the sign of someone who packs light.

Crossing into Canada, we were punished for our laughing and good moods. When asked if we had alcohol, tobacco, or other things in the car, we made jokes and giggled. We were a little more somber while standing outside the car while border agents riffled through our luggage with a dog sniffing at things. (That has become a favorite travel memory) The “unavailable luggage” magically was waiting for us at our Niagara Falls hotel the following night. We all gave a “hallelujah” at the registration counter.

And then in an inexplicable gesture of niceness, the young woman checking us in gave us complimentary upgrades to “Falls View Presidential Suites.” If losing a bag were the motivation for that, I’d volunteer to go without my suitcase for a day on every trip.

There are some really nice people in the world. And, there’s no doubt that we have some of the most terrific people anywhere right here at home. But, we don’t have a corner on pleasantness, kindness, civility and good deeds.

Throughout that trip, and on most any trip we’ve been on, we have met “nice people.”

It is affirming to my sometimes-dwindling faith in humanity. While realizing that we always have to be careful, I believe that people are basically good.

Maybe another thing that Mark Twain said is true, “Travel is fatal to prejudice, bigotry, and narrow-mindedness, and many of our people need it sorely on these accounts. Broad, wholesome, charitable views of men and things cannot be acquired by vegetating in one little corner of the earth all one’s lifetime.”

I hope we can get back to “normal travel” before too long. Some of us with “itchy feet” need it. — Merrill

Plant bulbs now for color explosion this spring

Spring-blooming bulbs are popular because of the beauty they add to the landscape and their ease of growing. Now is a good time to plant them, and many local retailers offer a wide variety.

Consider these popular selections.

Tulips — Tulips are adapted to Utah soils and are available in many colors and flower classes. Many tulip hybrids only bloom well for three or four seasons, then need to be replaced. However, there are some classes that thrive longer. Darwin hybrid tulips, generally the longest blooming, are valued for their large, brightly colored blossoms in red, pink, orange, yellow and white and grow to 30 inches tall. Fosteriana or Emperor tulips are known for their larger, elongated flowers in early spring.

Flowers reach 10 to 20 inches and come in shades of yellow, white and red. Some varieties have variegated foliage. Species tulips are the original wild species and generally are the longest-lived tulips. The flowers are not quite as spectacular and the plants are often smaller, but they are great to use in naturalized areas and rock gardens.

Daffodils (Narcissus) — Daffodils are an excellent bulb choice because they are deer resistant. They are long lived and should be divided every 3 to 4 years. Yellow is the most common color, but cultivars are available in creamy white and yellow orange, and newer white varieties have pink fringes.

Some cultivars grow from 6 to 12 inches.

Hyacinths — Hyacinths usually grow 6 to 10 inches tall. They are popular for their spring flower spikes with colors ranging from white to pink, red and purple.

They work well as a border plant intermixed with other spring flowers. Hyacinths usually start to lose vigor after 3 to 4 years and should be replanted.

Fritillaries — Also called checkered lily, they are less common but add beauty to the landscape. Known for having an upside down flower, the color is usually white or light purple. Tulips, daffodils and hyacinths should be planted with the nose of the bulb upward and the root plate downward. To plant, dig and loosen the entire bed to the proper depth. Press the bulbs into the soil, then cover with soil. Because the soil in a spaded bed is better drained and prepared, the planting will last longer. This method of planting is preferred over planting bulbs one by one with a bulb planter. In many soils, bulb planters do not work well, if at all.

Rae Chase - Manti High School

The CentraCom Athlete of the Week is Rae Chase. Rae is a sophomore outside hitter for Manti High School. This is her second year playing as a varsity OH for the Templars. Rae is the daughter of Dallin and Sara Chase and the oldest of five children. Rae has always been very passionate and dedicated to volleyball. When she isn’t playing for Manti High she spends the off-season playing club volleyball, most recently for South County Volleyball Club as a starting OH. Rae has gained some great friends and mentors over the years through volleyball. She currently holds a 4.0 GPA and is very talented in art and writing. If she isn’t playing volleyball she is usually reading a book or working on an art project. Rae is grateful for the coaches at Manti High and the effort they put into her development and in building a successful program. During the regular season this year Rae has had 203 kills, 213 digs, and 25 aces. We are proud to have Rae represent the Templars!

What a great drive and weekend it was to enjoy the fine craftsmanship of a Lexus coupe. more challenging, as we had to pass through a “City Slickers”-type event with several cowboys driving a herd of cattle down the road as they changed them from their summer pastures. We didn’t want any of the huge cows bumping into the Lexus as we passed through what seemed to be a very narrow slot formed by the cowboys on horses!

Other than that, the drive to the park was invigorating, with the RC slicing through the curves like they were butter — yet we were in complete comfort inside with the windows down and temperatures in the mid 70s.

The Fuji Edition of the RC comes complete with a 5.0-liter V-8 engine — of course, just another part of the keeping the driver engaged. The power plant produces a whopping 472 horsepower with 395 foot

pounds of torque that will propel the less-than-4,000pound coupe to 60 in a mere 3.96 seconds.

Oh, and this is all done without the use of a turbocharger in the naturally aspirated engine, and it sounds so good as it takes off like some kind of jet. Definitely no turbo lag to contend with in the RC! Yes, it also came with all the track additions that would make anyone in that environment happy: launch control, lap timers and a top speed of 168 miles per hour.

How could anyone go wrong?

This performance package is wrapped with a stunning exterior that will keep folks asking questions no matter where you might be. The designers have incorporated a huge amount of carbon fiber into the RC. The hood, roof, wing and many accents are all made from the lightweight

material. It is a good look on the coupe.

We stopped for lunch at a park in Salina on Sunday and had a whole group of teens surrounding the Lexus and asking questions about the car. This was a common occurrence with most anywhere we stopped along our weekend outing.

The inside of the F-Sport was made from a beautiful red leather that really added that extra little bit off luxury to the ride. The seats were extremely comfortable for the long ride and were heated and cooled, as we would have expected from the luxury brand.

A large 10.3-inch infotainment screen handles all the media and other options available in the Lexus, with the track pad again being our only complaint with the ride as it is still hard to use and navigate with. We are much better now with any Lexus at

just using voice commands to get what we want, from more air to navigation points.

There was plenty of leg room up front and a huge trunk space where there was room enough for not only our weekend jaunt but would have taken even more luggage, making a long vacation road trip possible.

There is a back seat included; however, the leg room for a long journey would not be great. We used it mostly to put the things we would need along the trip like treats and a pillow so they were handy.

Speed, looks, luxury: The 2021 Lexus RC F-Sport has them all in one complete package, making for a great choice in the luxury sports coupe market.

Online study tool provides master classes into LDS doctrine, history

Members of The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints have myriad tools to help them understand the doctrine, teachings and history of the church. Sometimes, though, they need more.

Jake Kissell has developed a way, through innovation and technology, to help members do a deeper dive into topics of the church.

The website http://GospelScholar.com offers a continually growing variety of professors and learned men and women, mostly from the Brigham Young University Religion Department, to teach online some of the more interesting parts of Latter-day Saint beliefs.

“Our primary goal is to help members have a classroom experience at home,” Kissell said. “This is beyond Come Follow Me (church Sunday

School manual). We are trying to bridge the gap for adults.

It’s like a Master Class or a virtual School of the Prophets.”

The school of the prophets was started by Joseph Smith for leaders in the church to learn and have greater understanding of the Gospel.

Some of the material on GospelScholar includes John Hilton’s teachings about the last 24 hours of Christ’s life; Robert Millett’s teaching on Lessons Learned from The Lectures on Faith; and Casey Griffiths’ teaching on controversial topics in the church.

Griffiths, who teaches religion at BYU and is one of the contributors and editors on the fourth “Saints” book, has videos on the GospelScholar such as Blacks and the Priesthood.

In the coming days, Griffiths said he will be filming a series under the title Joseph Smith’s teachings on Priesthood, Temples and Women. He will also be doing lessons on the trans-

Q

uestion: This has shown up in my park strip. What could be causing this?

Answer: This looks like skunk, or possibly raccoon, damage. Based on the pattern of damage in your lawn, the most likely offender is a skunk. These animals can really make a mess of a lawn when they shred or peel back the grass looking for grubs, one of their favorite foods.

The solution for this problem is to do some grub control in mid to late spring next year.

There is no benefit to doing an insecticide application now.

Look for a product that says it is effective for grubs. There are lots of beneficial insects in the lawn, so choose a product that targets grubs, webworms, and billbugs, not a product that kills lots of different insects.

Another thing that will help with grub control is to practice good lawn care. Egg-laying females of the beetles that cause grubs are attracted to the lush growth of overwatered, overfertilized lawns, and you don’t want to be encouraging them. Water deeply, but infrequently, and give the lawn adequate fertilizer but don’t overdo it. Enough is good, but extra isn’t better.
