Sevier Valley Hospital earns five-star breastfeeding friendly rating Intermountain Sevier Valley Hospital recently received a five-star rating for being a breastfeeding friendly facility from the Utah Department of Health (UDOH) by completing all 10 steps of the Stepping Up for Utah Babies program.

The state health program recognizes Utah hospitals that have taken steps to promote, protect, educate, and encourage breastfeeding in their facilities. Earning a five-star rating typically takes years.

“Our mom and baby caregivers have been working hard to earn this breastfeeding friendly rating. This signifies our caregivers are both competent and comfortable providing evidence-based education and resources to help families be successful in feeding their infants,” said Kenzie Peterson, RN, MSN, C-EFM, women and newborn nurse manager at Sevier Valley Hospital, who led the efforts to earn the designation.

“Our experience has taught us, when moms and newborns engage in early skin-to-skin contact during the “golden” first hour after birth, it greatly increases a mother’s success with breastfeeding,” she added.

Manti-La Sal National Forest Christmas tree permits on sale PRICE — Christmas tree permits will be available to purchase online through Recreation.gov beginning October 14, 2021. Details about designated cutting areas, dates and types of trees that may be cut may be found on Recreation.gov and the forest’s website.

“For every tree that is found, cut and carried home as a holiday fixture, a new story is created,” said USDA Forest Service Chief Randy Moore. “These stories become the precious memories that create traditions worth carrying on for generations and further connect families with their local forests.”

To purchase a Christmas Tree permit, visit Recreation.gov and search for Manti-La Sal National Forest Christmas Tree Permits. It is important to carefully read the overview and need-to-know information prior to purchasing the permit. Visitors will also need to set up or login to a Recreation.gov account to complete the transaction.

“We love that families continue to visit Manti-La Sal each year to find their perfect Christmas tree,” said Ryan Nehl, forest supervisor. “It’s a tradition we are excited to be a part and look forward to.”

Here are a few tips to keep in mind when getting ready: Cell service may be spotty or unavailable. Be sure someone knows where you are and when to expect you back.

Check the latest weather conditions, forest warnings and road closures before you leave on your trip.

Bring a map with you. Downloadable maps are available on the Manti-La Sal website, as well as all forest offices.

Roads may not be plowed. Carry tire chains, shovel(s) and a tow chain.

Be sure your vehicle has a full tank of gas.

Dress warmly and take extra dry clothes. Expect winter weather, including cold temperatures, snow and winds.

Park in areas so that traffic can get by safely, and do not block gates.

Visitors are reminded that trees cannot be taller than 20 feet and should have a maximum stump diameter of five inches. Do not cut trees within 100 feet of roads, streams or reservoirs or within 500 feet of a Ranger Station, campground or picnic area. Tree topping is not allowed. Cut the entire tree and leave a stump height of 12 inches or less (measured from the ground).

Cutting a Christmas tree helps improve forest health. The permit system helps to thin densely populated stands of small-diameter trees. Local forest health experts identify areas that benefit from thinning trees that tend to be the perfect size for Christmas trees.

Removing these trees in designated areas helps other trees grow larger and can open areas that provide forage for wildlife.

Christmas tree permits will be available to purchase online through Recreation. gov beginning Oct. 14.

Carving pumpkins into jack-o’-lanterns is an art form that comes in all shapes, sizes and levels of difficulty. The final product (usually) makes the pumpkin carvers proud and anxious to display their work. However, often just a few days later, the pumpkin creation may start to wither and rot, and eventually, mold will take over. Why does this happen?

When you carve a pumpkin, it exposes the insides, making it more susceptible to infection through air flow. The environment (temperature, sunlight, etc.) can also be a factor in the pumpkin’s quality.

Molds are a fungal micro-organism that have the potential to live everywhere. These fungi release tiny, lightweight spores that allow them to travel through the air. They can then infect and cause carved pumpkins to shrivel, soften and start to grow fuzzy, grey mold. Some common interior molds include Cladosporium, Penicillium,

Consider these methods to help preserve your carved pumpkin: 1. Thoroughly wash your pumpkin before cutting into it.

2. Sterilize spoons, knives or other carving tools before use, especially between pumpkin carving.

3. Remove all the pumpkin’s insides to reduce the surface area where potential fungi can grow.

4. Dip, wash or spray your finished carving with a 10 percent bleach solution. This will kill any microorganisms on your pumpkin.

5. Rub the cut areas with petroleum jelly, which helps lock in the moisture and slow the drying process.

6. Consider using an electric light or glow stick instead of a candle. This will prevent the gourd from “cooking” and spoiling faster.

Question: I bought more seed packages than I ended up using this spring. Will they stay good and store better in airtight food sealer bags? How long can I keep them in the bags?

Answer: Your seeds should probably be fine in a food sealer bag but that’s probably not necessary unless you’re planning to store them for a long time in a freezer.

Proper storage is important if you want to store your sur-

plus seeds and still get good germination. Four conditions can affect the quality of seeds in storage — light, moisture, large swings in temperature, and time. For some plant species all four conditions matter and for other species, it may be only one. Luckily, it’s easy to protect your leftover seeds from all four potential problems.

Keeping the jar in a back corner of a refrigerator shelf will take care of the wide swings in temperature and give the seeds a mostly dark location.

The fourth potential problem, time, is completely in your control. If your seed packets don’t have “packaged for” date on them, label them yourself before you put them in storage. Learn the maximum number of years each type of seed should be viable,

use the oldest viable seeds first, and discard seeds that are too old for good germination.

If you want to hold your seeds for multiple years, then something like a food sealer bag will be convenient for storage and the freezer will be a good place.

Before you put your seeds into a plastic bag or any other airtight container, make sure they are dry. If you’ve had the packets in a humid location and then you seal them in an

airtight container, the seeds could mold during storage.

Move your seed packets in a dry, room-temperature location for a week or so and they should be ready for airtight storage.

Q: I have some big spruce trees; some are nearly 30 feet tall. A few have fallen over in windstorms in the last few years and I’m wondering if I should stake the others so that I don’t lose any more?

What’s the best approach for

my trees?

A: Staking is an option for some newly transplanted conifers while they establish their root systems during their first year or so of growth, but it’s not really an option for your spruces.

They’re much too large to be successfully staked. Sometimes a microburst comes along and brings down a seemingly healthy, well-established tree, but if you’re losing a tree every couple of years, there are other issues to look at. Improper pruning or being planted too deeply can make a tree more susceptible to wind damage, but another common reason for tree failure in the wind is problems with the root system.

Poor rooting can affect tree stability and overwatering is the most common cause of root problems for trees. If your trees were being watered more than once a week during the summer, they were being overwatered.

Chronic overwatering affects the health and vigor of root systems.

Plants need oxygen for their roots, and they get it when air moves into the soil.

If you water frequently, the tiny air pores in the soil stay filled with water and there isn’t room for air. As a result, plants often can’t develop the robust root system they need to thrive. Roots can suffocate or may develop root rot.

Restricting the area where trees can spread their roots is another common cause of tree failure in the wind. Trees in parking strips and street planters frequently fail in windstorms.

There isn’t much you can do now if your trees are growing in a location where their root zone is restricted, but if they’ve had plenty of room to root out and grow, then a change in your watering habits may improve the outlook for the rest of your trees.

“The LS is the flagship of the Lexus brand,” said Chief Designer Koichi Suga. “More than any other model, it embodies the history and image of Lexus and serves as a symbol for everything the brand stands for.”

Our travels took us through the Colorado mountains on I-70 from Colorado Springs up to Idaho Springs, where we stopped to visit some shops we like in this old mining town. It has a quaint Main Street that has been closed off to allow for pedestrian travel, making it an even more unique destination.

There were some changes made with the redesign of the LS, not the least of which is an all-new power plant.

The vehicle’s former naturally aspirated V-8 4.6-liter engine that produced 386 horsepower and 367 footpounds of torque has been swapped for an all-new V-6 twin turbo-charged engine.

The new, smaller engine produces a whopping 416 horsepower and 442 foot-pounds of torque. Moving to turbo chargers represents a significant change for the flagship Lexus.

We were very impressed while driving the LS as there was power to spare no matter when we needed it, especially on the many mountain grades we encountered on our way home. The LS took it all in stride, never becoming overwhelmed with the grade.

Even with the smaller engine and a very large sedan, we averaged 23 mpg during the ride home over 500 miles of mostly two-lane highway

This new engine will rocket the full-sized sedan to 60 in just 4.6 seconds – not bad for something that folks might have classified as a grandpa car. The engine is coupled with a new 10-speed transmission, a first on a premium passenger car.

We drove this transmission about a year ago on the LC 500, and it was a smooth as silk. It continued to impress us on the LS. Inside, we could not have asked for a more luxurious space in which to enjoy our ride. As the LS is the flagship for Lexus, the company could not simply add a few new features to the cabin and hope that would do. Instead, they were inspired by the Omotenashi principal, or, in other words, they sought to infuse the cabin with luxury that not only welcomes but envelopes passengers while at the same time treating the driver like a partner.

The seats, made of fine leather, were soft with just the right amount of bolster, and they were heated and cooled, of course. Each front seat had a 28-way adjustment, making it virtually impossible not to find a comfortable position. We had the opportunity to use the heated seats a couple of times as the weather turned cooler on our way home.

The Lexus came with a heads-up display that was definitely the largest one we have had. It stayed low in the driver’s view and stretched halfway across the front window. Speed, navigation, tachometer and gears were all part of the display and, of course, it was projected in full color.

The huge screen making up the infotainment center is extraordinary and very functional. We will say it is difficult to use with the Lexus touchpad mouse-like setup.

It is hard to manage and

takes an inordinate amount of time to get through menus.

This interface method requires the driver to take his eyes off the road for way too long. This has been a problem in Lexus models over the years, and we wish they could find a new way to use the infotainment functions. We found it much easier to just use the touchscreen function to navigate the menus.

The LS 500 comes with every safety feature offered from the brand. There is a what they call a CoDrive system that, when engaged, keeps the Lexus centered in the lane and uses the adaptive cruise control to keep the Lexus a predetermined distance behind the vehicle in front of it. We used this feature for almost the entire drive home from Colorado.

There is precollision warning with emergency braking and pedestrian detection as well as rear cross path detection with emergency braking, which worked great one day when we were backing out in a grocery store parking lot and someone walked behind us. The Lexus immediately applied the brakes, working just as advertised.

Our time with the Lexus was as luxurious and comfortable as we could have ever imagined; the car was engaging and had a spirit within that kept us wanting to go further and further.
