Serious accident injures three near Mt. Pleasant MT. PLEASANT — Armando Tinoco, 26, Midvale, driving a 2007 Chevrolet Silverado pickup, was traveling southbound on US-89 at approximately Mile Marker 275, about one and-a-half miles south of Mt. Pleasant on the evening of Oct. 11 Eric Fossum, 76, who was driving a 2013 Ford Escape with passenger, Claudia Fossum, 73, both of Fairview, were traveling northbound at the same location.

Tinoco, in the pickup, was traveling above the posted speed limit attempting to pass the vehicle in front of him when he lost control and went off the right shoulder, according to the incident report provided by Utah Highway Patrol.

Tinoco then over corrected causing his pickup to spin counter clockwise crossing the southbound lane and into the northbound lane. The pickup crossed the northbound lane in front of the Fossum’s Ford Escape.

Fossum was unable to stop and hit the pickup. The front end of Fossum’s Escape impacted the passenger side cab of the Silverado pickup. The impact from Fossum’s car caused the frame and cab of the Chevrolet Silverado to separate.

The impact caused Fossum’s vehicle to spin clockwise approximately 100 degrees and come to rest facing southeast in the northbound lane.

A witness stated that the Chevrolet Silverado was right behind her and was attempting to pass her and at the last minute decided not to and went

off the road to the right.

Armando Tinoco suffered non-incapacitating injuries and was transported to Sanpete Valley Hospital. He has been charged with driving under the influence (DUI).

Eric and Claudia Fossum both suffered incapacitating injuries, were extricated from their vehicle and flown via helicopter to Utah valley hospital.

CDRA hears reports, forges ahead with Aspen Village plan CHERYL K. BREWER

MT. PLEASANT—In a Community Development and Renewal Agency meeting held Oct. 8, members heard reports from Monte Bona, executive director, and Chairperson Dan Anderson.

Director report Monte Bona reported the new fiscal year for the entity started on Oct. 1. A scholar in residence program has been instituted with a $5,000 grant from Mormon Pioneer National Heritage Area (MPNHA) and National Parks. Rosie Connor has been selected to fill the position.

Bona also reported funding for the second phase of the

trails project is currently being sought. Phase II of the project will go to the Spring City turnoff connecting the first phase that will go around the city park area.

Bona also reported that Phase 4 of the industrial park will include a new fulfillment center, similar to Overstock, plans to locate here.

A meeting with Kevin Christensen, Sanpete Economic Director, is slated for Oct. 28 to create a Capital Development Plan with Six County Association of Governments.

Chairperson report Dan Anderson, chairperson, reported that the city has received a matching fund grant in

the amount of $107,000 from Housing and Urban Development (HUD). Monies will be used to replace water lines and hookups to each lot in the park.

The city is currently in the bid process.

Anderson said there are many unknowns concerning the cost of installation due to the hard pan found in the area.

There are 33 trailers plus vacant lots where water lines need to be installed. Kevin Stallings suggested the owners should pitch in on the cost of hookups.

Anderson also reported that a new road material, instead of asphalt, will be tested in the industrial park. He said the new material would save the city

money if it withstands the heat, cold and wet weather in the area.

Anderson reported Phase 5 of the industrial park is moving along. Revenue from selling some of the new lots has made it possible to install conduit with three-phase power. Crews are in the process of pulli9ng wire and installing boxes and fiber optic. Sewer and water is also available.

Land on the east side of the runway, considered a buffer zone, may be sold which includes a half-acre lot approximately 98 feet wide by 200+ feet long. Property owners in the area want to connect to the roadway which was the old airport runway.

MT. PLEASANT — Prospective voters came to hear candidates running for three open city council seats and the office of mayor in Mt. Pleasant. The meeting was held in the Senior Community Center.

Candidates running for the three city council seats are Keith Collier, incumbent; Russell Keisel, who was appointed to fill the remainder of Dan Anderson’s term; Sam Draper, Rondy Black, Cathy Ostler and Stan Farnsworth, who did not attend the meeting, and has been said to be unofficially withdrawn.

The three candidates who are vying for the position of mayor are Dan Anderson, who was appointed to fill the mayor’s term after Mayor Sandra Bigler resigned; David Brown; and Mike Olsen, who is a write-in candidate.

Sheila Staker served as moderator and gave each candidate a time limit to introduce themselves. Members of the audience were then able to address a particular candidate with a question or asked for a response from each.

be the hot topics of the evening. Residents want answers as to when roads are going to be repaired. Both Collier and Keisel said the city is somewhat at an impasse when it comes to roads. Should the city repair the roads and then dig them to install a new irrigation line. Roads cost money and to do all the roads at once in the city would cost several million dollars, which the city does not have. Should the city raise taxes to repair roads?

Currently the city is looking at an alternative material to use instead of asphalt that is less expensive. The city has used some of the new material on the airport runway (new road) to see how it will perform over the winter.

Some of the candidates suggested that the city needs a better tax base saying grants are not always the answer, since most are matching grants.

On the topic of water, many residents were dismayed with the water restrictions every year with water running down the creek that can’t be used for drinking because the federal government has declared it unfit to drink.

In the past, the city council has addressed the water issue where they would have to build a water treatment plant for safe drinking water and are pursuing digging a new well also for culinary water to add to existing water.

City manager The other topic was whether Mt. Pleasant should hire a city manager. The figure of $150,000 was thrown out as a salary. Each candidate had an

Keith Collier said he was in favor of hiring a city manager because of their varying amount of experience. He felt the city needed a city manager with varying amount of experience with more education to be creative.

He said the city manager is still an employee and the council takes the lead and tells the manager what the residents want. Collier said the mayor (Dan Anderson) has been doing an excellent job.

Mayor seat All three mayor candidates did agree that Mt. Pleasant City does not need a city manager.

Michael Olsen, write-in candidate, said the impact fees were not the answer to

raise money for infrastructures and said the city needs to find other ways to raise money and suggested it may be necessary to add to building fees. Olsen said the reason he was running was he felt he needed to stand up and do something.

Dan Anderson told the audience that impact fees are subject to guidelines from the legislature. Impact fees cannot be used for existing roads, parks just for the building new ones. Connection fees for water, sewer, power, etc. cannot be raised because the city can only charge for the cost of installation. Other avenues need to be explored. Anderson said he was running for mayor because he loves serving Mt. Pleasant saying the role of the city is to serve its citizens.

He said the council has been working well together to solve problems and city crews are working happily.

David Brown, candidate, said that impact fees should be avoided. He said the use of grants should be used to generate more income. He wants to work with the council and for the city.

Fall transhumance Some of you may not be familiar with that longer word in the title of this column. I know that many of you are familiar with the short word – “Fall.” I’m familiar with it.

I fall down occasionally while trying to take too many steps at a time on a staircase. I had a memorable fall on front steps of the courthouse a while back.

Kids fall down all the time and get up and it’s no big deal. Falling as an older person often means bruises and sometimes breaks.

But the word “fall” as being used today is the synonym to the word “autumn.”

It’s interesting that we have two words for this season of the year.

It’s also interesting that our concept of four seasons of the year is not how the world has always looked at the year. Much of the world operated under the two seasons, warm and cold, concept for a long time.

The longer word, “transhumance,” in today’s column title is a good one to know in Sanpete. We don’t use it much, but the concept it represents is very evident here. I thought of that word Sunday afternoon a week and a half ago when I got in a “Sanpete traffic jam.” That means I got stuck in a herd of sheep.

My college edition of the Random House Dictionary of the English Language defines transhumance as: “… the seasonal migration of livestock and the people who tend them between lowlands and adjacent mountains...”

The cattlemen and sheepmen of Sanpete may not know the word but they live the word.

When I see sheep on the road, I sometimes think of this story involving people I know. It’s about the out of state city girl who married a Sanpete boy. We listened as she related her frustration when she had experienced a herd of sheep on the highway for the first time. She was in a hurry and, of course, the sheep were on the pavement and she couldn’t get through them.

She hadn’t yet learned what most Sanpeters know.

You don’t completely stop for the sheep when they’re on the highway. You slowly keep moving and they’ll

make way for you even if it’s an “up close and personal” passage.

This city gal determined that she’d had enough of not making any progress. She triumphantly told us, “I fi- nally decided that I couldn’t wait any longer. I was just going to have to go through them.”

She said that she just thought to herself, “What the heck!, pork chops!” (We all laughed and then we had a conversation about the difference between pork and mutton) It’s round-up time in Sanpete. It’s that time when we see the livestock come off the mountain and the summer ranges. We can expect to see sheep and cattle on the roads.

Most of us who have been around for a while take these sights and sounds for granted. But seeing herds of animals on the roads is quite the novelty for those who haven’t experienced it before.

Students at Snow College who don’t come from agricultural areas are entertained by the “parades” of livestock. Some years ago, my wife grabbed some international students and took them out to the street to see the sheep go by. They were grinning and laughing and “high-fiving” each other over the spectacle!

It’s a great time of year.

The temperature swings from night to day are dramatic. The leaves on the mountains are colorful. The lawns in the valley don’t need mowing as often and lawnmowers will soon be retired for the season.

It’s a great time of year to experience the “countryishness” of Sanpete. Enjoy the transhumance phenomenon.

Look at it from a new perspective. Perhaps you’ll be surprised at how much pleasure you’ll get from watching our cowboys and cowgirls on their horses and 4-wheelers doing real cowboy work. The dogs are fun to watch too as they work the herds.

There’s a lot of simple pleasure in noticing what some may call our simple life here that we sometimes don’t think twice about. It’s simple, yes – but really — who wants “complicated?”

Members of the new Mt. Pleasant Youth City Council were sworn in at the Oct. 8 city council meeting. New members include: Scott Shock, mayor; Devin Palmer, mayor pro Tempore; Hayley Jensen, Keenan Schuhmann, Spencer Olson, Daniel Boekweg, Joshua Thompson and Levi Palmer. Jacobson seeks Fountain Green council seat FOUNTAIN GREEN—Shelith E. Jacobson is currently serving as an appointed city council member in Fountain Green while filling a seat vacated last February. She is now seeking to keep one of the three four-year council seats there.

Ballots for the Municipal General Election must be filed by 8 p.m., Tuesday, Nov. 5, either by mail, ballot box or in person at the Sanpete County Clerk’s Office.

Jacobson says she has been a supportive member of the community since her family moved to Fountain Green in 1990. Upon moving to Sanpete she trained as an Emergency Medical Technician (EMT) and served on the North Sanpete Ambulance.

Jacobson has also been actively involved with the annual Lamb Day celebration, work-

In her professional life, Jacobson has worked in the field of Radiologic Technology for 44 years. In this capacity, she has served as a shift supervisor at Utah Valley Regional Medical Center in Provo, Head of Mammography at Central Valley Medical Center (CVMC) in Nephi, and as head of the radiology department at CVMC. Jacobson retired in February 2019 to devote more time to her family, her church and community. If elected, she is committed to continuing the position she is currently filling on the Fountain Green City Council with honesty, integrity and dedicated enthusiasm.

Spring City sets second season of concerts SPRING CITY—The second season of concert series is scheduled to begin with a concert given by the Snow College Choir under the direction of Dr. Michael Huff at 7 p.m., Friday, Oct. 25, in the Spring City Community Center ballroom, 45 South 100 East.

Other concerts planned include advanced piano students in recital on Nov. 22; tenor Brian Stucki and some of his students on Feb. 14; and the Young Artists Chamber Orchestra, under the direction of Jack Ashton, in April, the exact date yet to be determined.

The concert series was originally established to earn money toward a piano for the ballroom. However, a year ago, the Bastien Foundation graciously gave the city a piano for the ballroom. As a result, the concerts are generally free, except for the February concert which is a fundraiser for the piano’s maintenance.

NSHS drama club performs well at Shakespeare competition JORI TURPIN

CEDAR CITY — The North Sanpete High School (NSHS) Drama program traveled to Cedar City last week to compete in a Shakespeare Competition.

According to program director Alex Barlow, students did very well and won multiple awards. The team took first place in Overall Sweepstakes in the Cambridge division, first place in Ensemble Scene from Macbeth and second place in monologue for Serena Smith.

The team also had some individual winners in monologues: Isa Wright and Serena Smith both had Straight Superiors, Kamryn Pack had two Superiors and one Excellent.

For scenes, Ben Anderson and Aubrey White; and Kylee Davis and Rory Anderson also had Straight Superiors.

MT. PLEASANT — The Lady Hawks volleyball team played both the Lady Wildcats from Richfield and the Lady Templars, Manti. The Lady Hawks were unable to obtain a win from the Lady Wildcats, losing all four sets, but took a three-set victory against the Lady Templars.

Richfield To start the week, the Lady Hawks took on the Richfield Wildcats at home. Before the game, Richfield was ranked second in the 3A classification, and North Sanpete was sixth. The Lady Hawks aspired to defeat the Wildcats in hopes of boosting their own RPI, but North Sanpete was unable to control the ball on their side of the net resulting in a four set loss.

During the first set, the Hawks struggled with serve receive, as the tough float serves of the Wildcats repeatedly stumped North Sanpete’s passers. The Hawks fought, but the first set ended with a 25-19 score for the Wildcats.

The Wildcats dominant serving continued into the second set as multiple aces resulted in a 25-12 win for Richfield.

Although they were down two sets, North Sanpete did muster up some fortitude and fought back to win the third set 25-23. However, whatever momentum that the Hawks had was fleeting as the fourth set ended with a 25-16 score in favor of the Lady Wildcats.

Overall, the Hawks passing and inability to execute a ball resulted in the loss.

Middle Blockers Hallie Pay and Mekai Laupapa were stars of the show as they contributed several blocks and five kills each which helped lead North Sanpete into victory.

BLUFFDALE—North Sanpete Hawk Junior Varsity (JV) football team took on the Summit Academy Falcons in Bluffdale on Oct. 10 and came away with the victory.

The first quarter was rather uneventful as neither team was able to score. It wasn’t until second quarter, with 11:13 on the clock, when North Sanpete’s Brady Jacobsen made the first goal of the game. Rance Christensen then kicked in the extra point setting the score at 7-0.

Not long afterward, at 4:37, Hawk Quarterback Clayton Lewis threw the ball to Xander Shelley who ran the ball in for a second goal. Followed by another successful extra point kick by Christensen bringing the score to 14-0.

The Hawks then kicked-off and the Falcons took possession of the ball but were not able to do much due to the aggressive Hawk defense.

The Falcons were forced to punt the ball, but fumbled the punt and the Hawks took possession on the one-yard line.

As the time ran down to 11:1 seconds on the clock, North Sanpete’s Andy Mower intercepted a Falcon pass. With the goal nearby, the Hawk’s Colby Robinson, ran in the touchdown and the extra point kick was good. At halftime the score was 27-0.

The second half began with kick-off and Hawks possession, but with 9:13 on the clock, Summit Academy intercepted a Hawk pass and the Falcons took possession of the ball. Then at 7:43, a 10yard penalty was called on the Falcons.

The Falcons punted the ball and the Hawks once again took possession at 7:11. The rest of the third quarter did not go smoothly and included more penalties but no gains by

either team but ended still in Hawks favor, 27-0.

Summit Academy Falcons had possession of the ball at the beginning of the fourth quarter. The Hawks defense slowed the Falcons progress, but after a time-out at 10:17, the Falcons successfully crossed the goal and kicked in the extra point for their first score of the game.

The score now 27-7, North Sanpete took possession after kick-off. Unfortunately, North Sanpete fumbled the ball and with 9:57 on the clock Summit Academy took possession.

North Sanpete defense was aggressive and Summit Academy was again forced to punt at 8:44. The Hawks took possession, as time ran down with neither team able to score, the game ended with a final score, 27-7, giving the Hawk’s junior varsity team another successful win.

Tracy Jo Johansen 1966~2019 MT. PLEASANT-- Tracy (Tracy Jo) Johansen our beloved wife, mother, grandmother, daughter, sister and friend to so many people went back to live with our Heavenly Father and reunite with family and friends Oct. 11, 2019.

After a long year of fighting breast cancer, she is finally free of her pain.

Tracy is survived by her husband, Steve Johansen; her children, Jaclyn (Jeff) Lewis; Justin (Josee) Johansen; her brother, Marty (Katrina) Madsen; her sister, Christy Carlon Umphrey; her mother, Leslie Madsen and her father, John (Jack) Madsen.

Tracy was born Jan. 5, 1966, to Jack and Leslie Madsen. Not too long after Tracy graduated from Manti High School, she meet her true love, Steve Johansen. Steve and Tracy married March 5, 1985. Later that year, they welcomed their first child Jaclyn, four years later their son, Justin, was born. Her children are her pride and joy; she always made sure they came first.

Tracy has six beautiful grandchildren that mean everything to her. Tracy was on cloud nine when her first grandbaby, Drake, made his way into her life.

Tracy loved taking her grandkids on all types of adventures weather it was camping, boating or just having them stay at her house as much as she could. Tracy was the most kind-hearted woman and will be greatly missed by so many.

A Celebration of Life will be held Saturday, Oct. 19, at 11 a.m., in Mt. Pleasant North Stake Center, 461 North 300 West.

Viewings will be held Friday, Oct. 18, from 6-8 p.m., and Saturday from 9-10:30 a.m., prior to services both at the North Stake Center.

Interment will be in the Mt. Pleasant City Cemetery under the care of Rasmussen Mortuary.

WALES-- Linda, as she is known to Mike, her husband and companion of 38 years, is known as Mom to me and 13 others, grandma to 34 grandchildren, and greatgrandma to 10 greatgrandchildren.

Linda Ellen HoddyTripp was born June 28, 1946, to John Edward and Artie Jo Merritt Jordan in Barboursville, West Virginia. She rejoined her Father in Heaven Oct. 11, 2019.

The story of her family, as it's known today, started March, 24, 1981, when she was sealed to Dad in the Washington D.C. Temple of The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints. On that day, a man, woman, and 11 children became a family, sealed to each other for all time.

Another three years would see child 12, 13, and 14 added to the roster. Her journey as Mom of 14 would take her through five states, at least 10 cities, and at least a dozen homes.

During that time, in addition to being Mom and the many hats that title carries with it, she worked as a secretary, saleswoman, trucking and shipping manager, newspaper employee, amusement and waterpark employee, sheriff deputy, corrections officer, and temple worker.

It goes without saying that having a family this size required a lot of sacrifice of time, energy, and personal desires in order to raise us into good, decent, self-sufficient members of society.

She lived her life on her terms: loud, laughing, colorful, and often in the service of others. Of all her jobs, titles, and callings, Dad said her absolute favorite was her eight years as a temple ordinance worker. This combined her love of service with her love of her Savior and doing what she could to bring families together, and individuals back to their Father in Heaven.

She is survived by her husband Michael Allen Tripp; children, Sarah (John) Taylor; Philip (Cyndy) Hoddy; Cary (Anne) Hoddy; Eric (Rhonda) Hoddy, Anne (James) Sobek; David Tripp; Emily (James) Ferrell; Jack Hoddy; Joshua (Joann) Tripp; April (Scott) Holmes; Sunshine (Darren) Durfey; Melody (Paul) Morley; Chad (Nikki) Tripp; brother Barry (Shahnaz) Jordan.

She was preceded in death by her parents and son, Timothy N. Tripp.

Those who love her look forward to seeing her again.

Funeral services were held Oct. 14, in the Sanpitch Ward.

Interment was in the Wales Town Cemetery.

About Kenzy’s treatment After almost six months of insta-care and doctor visits for symptoms ranging from sleeping constantly, swollen tonsils, stomach pain, severe nose bleeds, headaches, and no energy, Kenzy became deathly ill last February.

Then, after two weeks of no eating and extreme fluid loss, he finally got the Insta-care to draw some blood and on March 12, this year, Kenzy was diagnosed with AML “Acute Myeloid Leukemia”.

Since then, during the last six-and-a-half months Kenzy has battled for his life, has gone through five rounds of chemotherapy, many hospital visits, pain, nausea, depression, anxiety, blood and platelet transfusions and so much fear, hope and sorrow.

It has been a roller coaster for him and his loved ones.

Kenzy’s family was told that his AML gene made him “low risk” meaning that he most likely could be cured by chemo alone and with this hopeful news it was encouraging to see the treatments end.

But after all the chemo rounds were complete, a follow up bone marrow biopsy was done and the doctors

presented bad news, although there were not any cancer cells showing in his blood, the chemo had not killed the mutated gene that had caused his cancer. He was going to have to face a bone marrow transplant.

This news was devastating, Kenzy felt so hopeless, thinking that if the high odds of chemo did not work for him, the terrifying odds of 50/50 chance of survival with a bone marrow transplant were going to be against him too.

At a family meeting with one of Kenzy’s doctors, the family was told that although the doctor wanted to wait three weeks and let Kenzy’s body heal a bit, the chance of anything changing or the gene count going down was almost impossible because the chemo didn’t kill the cancer completely.

While talking, crying and trying to face the reality of a transplant and the odds, the hospital coordinator made a statement saying “don’t get me wrong, I believe in miracles,” but the fact needs to be faced that, because the gene was showing up at all, a transplant will have to be done.

The doctor said to wait three weeks before scheduling, do another biopsy, test the family for a match and prepare for this emotional event. A half match was found in Kenzy’s youngest brother, 16-year-old Blair, but not a perfect match as was hoped.

Blair was, of course, scared but willing and excited that he was going to be able to help his brother, Kenzy. With every-

thing lined up and a huge outpouring of prayers from family and friends for this “miracle” the coordinator spoke of, Kenzy and family went back on Sept. 30 to meet with the doctor again.

Being fully prepared to schedule the transplant for the second week of October, everyone sat at the table prepared to face what was coming. The doctor sat across the table smiling and proceeded to tell Kenzy that the almost impossible had happened.

He reported that the count on the cancer gene had actually gone down significantly in the past month and the transplant would not be scheduled at this time as Kenzy is considered to be in remission.

The doctor told Kenzy that he could have his central line removed and take a month of freedom from doctors and checkups.

Everyone could not believe what they were hearing. It took two full days to believe it was real because it had been such a rollercoaster ride, so many highs and lows. But now, the belief is sinking in and the family is trying to move forward with all the aftermath, physically, emotionally and financially.

The transplant prospect is not fully off the table and Kenzy will be going in again on Nov. 1, for another bone marrow biopsy to see if the gene has disappeared altogether, but for now the family has their miracle!

If the next gene count has gone to “0” he will still have three years of monthly blood

draws, a year of drawing every three months and his final year of two draws, before they will call him cured.

If he makes it through those five years without a sign of the gene in his blood, the odds of him getting the cancer back are very low. All prayers and hopes are for this complete cure.

Kenzy is currently considered as disabled and unable to work for possibly two years.

Many of the costs of his treatment have not been covered by Medicaid and there is no firm figure of what the bottom-line costs for his treatment will be. The bills are still coming in and the family needs help covering them. He also does not have a vehicle and is dependent on others to take him to appointments.

Kenzy is looking forward to his planned marriage next July to his sweetheart Mya, who has been a rock of strength to him through all of this, and he hopes for a long life with children and grandchildren, for which he will be able to enjoy.

According to his mother, Kenzy is the most amazing, strong and courageous man she knows. She is proud of him and grateful every day that she is his mother and has been able to be there for him through this trial.

“He is such a sweet loving and generous person,” she says, “All we can hope for and want for him is everything.

After the suffering, pain and fear, we just want him to see joy, hope and an amazing future.”

Photography art exhibit opens Oct. 25 at Fairview museum FAIRVIEW—The photography artwork of two Sanpete artists, Cindy Akee and Mark Memmott, will be honored with a reception to be held Friday, Oct. 25, from 6:30 to 8 p.m., in the Rotating Artists Gallery, at the Fairview Museum of History and Art, 85 North, 100 East. Everyone is welcome to attend. The exhibit will then be on display from Oct. 25 thru Jan. 24, 2020.

Cindy Akee Cindy Akee is a Sanpete County photographer who got a start after her dear friends, Bill and Carol Bass, got her a camera for Christmas 2017.

Since then she has launched her own portrait photography business, Magic Moments by Cindy.

She also does “shot” photo journalist work and dabbles in landscape and wildlife photos as well.

Akee has made a photography style for herself by incorporating digital artistry into her portraits and uses them

to create fantastical scenes in which her subjects are set.

She plans to advance her artwork and business with an online presence and says “she looks forward to growing more as an artist.”

Mark Memmott Mark Memmott says, “Photography is my calling, my passion and the thing that will undoubtedly drive me insane someday. I don’t photograph subjects; I photograph the way they make me feel. Admittedly, it’s a bit of a strange concept. But it is honest – and it is the best way to describe my approach to the craft.”

“I wrestle with every image I shoot,” he says. “I assume perfection is possible and I want to wring it out of every picture.” He notes that if that is all you know about him, you know him very well.
