Sanpete County residents can look forward to “Fun for the Whole Herd” this weekend as the Sanpete County Fair gets underway.

This year’s fair will be held Aug. 20 through 28 at the Manti Fairgrounds, 64 W. 500 North, Manti. Events will include Open Class exhibits, rodeos,

Doug was born at Gunnison Valley Hospital on Nov. 21, 1950, to Gerald and Beth Ann Willden. He attended public school in Sparks, Nevada, and completed one year at the University of Nevada, Reno.

Doug spent the summers of 1963 through 1966 working with his g ra n d p a r e n t s Ken and Orpha Whitlock and his uncle Glen Whitlock to help them with their farm and cattle. His summers in 1967 and 1968 were spent working for Willden Winch Livestock on their Wah Wah Ranch in Western Utah.

In 1973, Ken and Orpha asked Doug if he would be interested in running the family farm in Mayfield, which Doug has been doing for the past 48 years. Doug currently farms 350 acres of cropland and has a herd of 160 mother cows.

Doug has served as president of the Mayfield-Gunnison Cattle Association for approximately 20 years. He was president of the Mayfield Irrigation Company for three years and assisted in the installation of the gravity flow irrigation

Patricia Ann Dean Christiansen On the evening of July 28, 2021, Patricia Ann Dean Christiansen of San Juan Capistrano, CA passed peacefully at her home after a long struggle with cancer. Patricia D. Christiansen, loving wife of Elmer Leon Christiansen and mother to their seven children, is preceded in death by her parents Rebecca Irene Shultz Dean and John William Roy Dean, and her sisters, Barbara Dean Ripplinger Lacelle, and Nancy Dean Wagner, and by her husband Elmer Leon Christiansen. She is survived by her seven children, twenty-eight grandchildren, and nine great-grandchildren.

Patricia was an active and dedicated member in her congregation of The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints, serving in leadership roles in the children’s Primary organization, as a Seminary teacher, as a Communications Specialist in Church Public Affairs, and as a Family History Consultant, assisting the public and church members in researching their family genealogy, and as a Church Historian. many hobbies and activities included in part, quilting, sewing, costuming for theater and dance productions, piano and music, creative writing, journaling, photography, and supporting charitable organizations. In recent years she traveled to Europe, Alaska, South and Central America, and across the United States.

Patricia is celebrated by her loving family, friends, and neighbors and will be greatly missed. Funeral Services will be held Saturday, August 21, 2021, at 2:00 p.m. at Rasmussen Mortuary. Interment in the Mt. Pleasant City Cemetery. Online condolence at rasmussenmortuary.com.

Clara Louise Beck Green passed away on Monday August 9th, 2021, due to complications of Parkinson’s disease. She was born on April 11th, 1943, to Earl J. and Ilena Edmunds Beck in Spring City, Utah. She attended schools in Spring City, Moroni, and Mt. Pleasant, graduating from North Sanpete High School.

With the loving support from her family, she brought her daughter Debra into the world.

In December 1975 she married Lloyd Green and moved to Orem. They were later divorced.

While in Orem she was a member of the Utah Circuit Breakers CB Club.

During her life she worked at many different sewing plants including Pacific Trail, Jolene’s, BC Limited, Carlisle’s, and Utah Sportswear. She quit working to take care of her parents in the final years of their lives.

Due to declining health caused by Diabetes and Parkinson’s disease she moved to Trinity Mission Health & Rehab and later to Orem Rehab and Nursing.

Wherever she lived or worked she made friends that loved her. She loved to knit, crochet, collecting,

genealogy, reading and doing math puzzles.

She will be missed by family and friends including her daughter Debra Beck Reid (John) Payson, 2 grandson’s Jesse and Corbin Reid Payson, 2 great granddaughters Charlotte and Coraline Reid Lehi, Sister Marie Memmott Nephi, David Beck (Linda) West Point. Preceded in death by her parents and brother-inlaw Tom Memmott.

Funeral services were held Friday, August 13, 2021, at 11:00 a.m. with a viewing from 9:30 — 10:30 a.m. prior to services at Rasmussen Mortuary (96 N 100 W, Mt. Pleasant, UT).

Vance Caleb Strait Brazil Vitória and Boston Massachusetts Missions

Vance Caleb Strait has returned home from serving in the Brazil, Vitória and the Boston, Massachusetts Missions for The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints. He will be reporting on his mission on Sunday, August 22, 2021 at 9 a.m. in the Fountain Green 2nd Ward. Vance is the son of Nathan and Alyson Strait of Fountain Green. Grandparents are Vance Bradford and Brenda Aagard of Fountain Green and Clifton and Karen Strait of Perry. Great-grandparents are Burke and Verla Smith of Mt. This event brings together fire departments from around the Sanpete Valley to compete in timed events and drills with the hope of taking home cash prizes and trophies. The event begins at 7 p.m. in the big arena at the fairgrounds.

The annual Dutch Oven Cook-Off will begin at 2 p.m. on Saturday, Aug. 21, with judging at 4:30 p.m. Food will be available for purchase after the judging at $5 per plate. At 6 p.m. on Saturday, the Junior Rodeo will be held at the fairgrounds arena.

Born June 2, 1936 to Claude Cornelius & Martha Lucetta Duncan Workman in Lovell, Wyoming. Married Carol Ellertson later divorced. Married Glenna Hone April 26, 1975 in Las Vegas, NV, Solemnized in the Salt Lake Temple on December 8, 1984.

At the age of 70, Doug still works from dawn to dusk (and sometimes later). Doug loves watching the sun rise on the calm mornings at the farm, assisting newborn calves as they take their first steps and being on horseback herding cattle. He enjoys spending time with his three children — G.J. (Emily), Garrick (Stephanie) and Felicia (Charlie) — and his 10 grandchildren.

hen I have questions and want information about basic medical and psychological issues, I often do research on the Mayo Clinic website. The Mayo Clinic was ranked the No. 1 “Best Hospital” nationwide for the sixth consecutive year by “U.S. News & World Report” in July.

A representative of the hospital, one Dr. Noseworthy (yes, you read that right), was quoted as saying “Our patients tell us the Mayo Clinic experience is unparalleled…” (I only included that quote because I felt Dr. Noseworthy’s name deserved to be mentioned here) This past weekend, I was involved in two events that sparked a question. The question? – “Is a “sense of belonging important?”

Not surprisingly, The Mayo Clinic’s position is a big, “Yes.” Our physical and mental health are apparently strongly affected by our sense of belonging.

The first event that made me think about this topic was my Richfield High School Class of 1970 reunion on Friday night.

Thirty-seven classmates were in attendance. People came in from several Western states up to and including California, Texas, and two from Alaska. We ate prime rib and chicken cordon bleu at the Frontier Village in Richfield. I recommend it.

More than fifty years later (51) after graduation, a group of old (and I mean old) classmates wanted to get together and give hugs and swap stories. Old friendships were renewed.

And, strangely, I felt a bond with some of the people who I had never really been that close with during our school days.

Common experiences with people create that sense of belonging that is so important to us. Whether we like it or not, or realize it or not, I believe it’s true.

I know people who are adamant that they are loners and social misfits. One person I know has a tee shirt that reads, “I Used to be a People Person, but People Ruined That for Me” Interestingly, some of these people are the hardest to get away from in a conversation. They want to belong to the “complain about people” club. There’s lots of members who enjoy belonging to that club.

Oh, by the way, guess who got roped into being in charge of the next class reunion in four years? I only accepted the “railroading” if Marjie, my friend and fierce geography rival, accepted a co-chair position. I’m thinking a planning meeting trip to Alaska may have to be made to visit her and her husband. Or in the alternative, a “business meeting” could be arranged for in Hawaii. I’m wondering what our class bank account looks like.

The second event of the weekend took place in Leadville, Colorado on Saturday. It was the Leadville 100 Mountain Bike

Race. (Actually 104 miles) This was the fourth time our oldest son Jackson has raced in this controlled and restricted, grueling, high altitude marathon of a race. This year he finished as #202 of 1,130 finishers.

(The race has about 1,500 racers each year) His time was 8:53:04 – nearly nine hours.

It was the first time around for our son Kent (came in at #719) and sonin-law Ty (#610). They had respectable finishes.

Believe me, just to finish is a big deal. Many don’t – up to and including the death of an experienced mountain biker on the course Saturday.

Arrangements were made for us to fly into Leadville in a private plane. We left Spanish Fork early in the morning. Leadville’s airport is North America’s highest elevation airport at nearly 10,000 feet. We flew back that night through a little rain storm. I felt calm knowing that my life insurance was current and paid on an automatic withdrawal plan.

I could write an extensive essay on the bike race day experience. I could tell you of all the lives I saved. (I passed out water and Coca-Cola to racers for a while on a long, killer, up-hill section of the course. Some said to me, “Thank you so much! You saved my life!)

I could tell you of the feeling of awe I had watching the hundreds of cyclists putting themselves through the pure grit of personal determination to do their best on the crazy difficult course. It was phenomenal.

Seeing family and friends providing support was also spectacular. It’s a highly choreographed and wellplanned effort to provide the riders hydration and nutritional care. Ice in nylon stockings is also a thing.

Those are poked down the jerseys to help with cooling.

Of all the things I could mention, the thing I want to emphasize is the concept we started with here – the sense of belonging. I observed that the cycling community is just that, a community. It is a “family” of sorts that provides a strong sense of belonging.

The feeling I felt in Leadville Saturday was a feeling of “we belong” to each other and we have common goals and interests. Yes, we want to do our personal best; but, we also want good things for our fellow cyclist brothers and sisters.

There are times when riders help each other by taking turns “drafting” behind each other in groups to “pull” each other along.

Encouragement is given one to another.

I realize that there is comradery and a feeling of family in many sports and endeavors. But it was cycling that was on display for me on Saturday. It made a big impression on me. I was very proud to see my boys, with friends, at the finish line. Those medals looked awesome hanging around their necks.
