MANTI — The 2019 Sanpete County Fair is Bigger, Better and Bluer than it ever has been in the past. Many fun activities, events and exhibits will be presented from now through Saturday, Aug. 24. Activities will include many 4-H presentations including a horse show, livestock, small animals and exhibits of all sorts. Those who like to rodeo will find a junior rodeo and two nights of big time RMPRA rodeo action. Entertainers, Whistle Nut and Ole will provide comic relief and rider safety for the rodeos. Horses will be put to the test during the annual horse pull competition. There will be Cowboy Mounted Shooting and the annual Cattleman’s Association Beef Dinner. In the mechanized excitement category, motorcycle riders will tackle the Sanpete Extreme Moto and the bigger, badder, faster demolition derby. Be sure to include the Fireman’s Challenge where water can win and be on the watch for cool vehicles in the car show. Carnival rides will be at the fair, Fun

on the Farm, mud volleyball and mud scramble will be fun, local talent will perform and the pie eating contest will happen. A live concert featuring Dave Stamey and special guests Manystrings and Co. will provide a musical performance to remember and don’t forget the mammoth parade on Manti Main Street. Unless listed otherwise, all events take place at the Sanpete County Fairgrounds, 500 North State Street, Manti. Rodeo, event tickets It is recommended that tickets be purchased in advance for Xtreme Moto Racing, rodeos, demolition derby and carnival. Tickets will also be sold at the Fair Grounds Ticket Booth through Friday, Aug. 16, from 4 to 8 p.m. Tickets for the Dave Stamey and Manystrings concert will be sold at the door of the event. Rodeo entry contestants who wish to participate may call the Rocky Mountain Professional Rodeo Association (RMPRA) office today to register between 1 and 7 p.m., at (719) 6968740 or online at www.rmpraonline. com. Saturday, Aug. 17 The Western Horse 4-H program horse show takes place this morning. Show participants will register at 8 a.m., followed by the horse test at 8:30 a.m. The actual horse show begins at 9 a.m., in the fairgrounds arena. From 1 to 5 p.m., the Open Class and 4-H entries will be accepted at the Exhibit Building. Signup and cooking begins at 2 p.m., for everyone’s favorite event, the Dutch Oven Cook-Off competition. This year, contestants will have the option of making a main dish, bread, side dish, dessert, or all four. Sign-up at the pavilion. Fairview City has recently received a drop box where old, unused prescription medication may be safely disposed. The drop box is located at Fairview City Hall, 86 South State Street. Protect your family and community from the dangers of drug misuse by properly disposing of unused medications in a designated place.

Father, son to exhibit at Fairview Museum FAIRVIEW — James Heywood and his son, Eric Heywood, will open as guest artists at the Rotating Artists Gallery at the Fairview Museum on Friday, Aug. 23. A reception will be held in their honor that evening from 6:30 to 8 p.m., at the museum. Friends, family and art lovers are encouraged to come and view this spectacular art event. James Heywood and his wife, Terri, live in Moroni. James explains that Sanpete County has been his James Heywood home for the last two decades. He and his wife have been married 47 years. They have eight sons and seven daughters-in-law and 26 grandchildren. James presently works for North Sanpete School District at the middle school in Moroni. James noted that he has been making photographs for more than four decades and it is one of his three greatest passions in life. Ally Brotherson, daughter of Rich and Molly Brotherson, Mt. Pleasant, was crowned 2019 Miss Sanpete at a Taylor Palmer, daughter of John and Linda Palmer, competition held Aug. 9 in the Snow College Eccles Ephraim, was selected as Miss Sanpete County Center for Performing Arts. Ally Brotherson crowned 2019 Miss Sanpete, Taylor Palmer Miss Sanpete Outstanding Teen during competition EPHRAIM — Ally Brotherson, Mt. Pleasant, is the new 2019 Miss Sanpete County and Taylor Palmer, Ephraim, is the new Miss Sanpete County Outstanding Teen. Joining Miss Sanpete County is Ashtyn Childs, first attendant, Centerfield; and Bailey Simons, second attendant, Manti. Hope Marsing, Manti, was crowned Miss Sanpete County Outstanding Teen first attendant. Other scholarships awarded include: Ashtyn Childs and Kaytlin Estey received The Spirit of Miss Sanpete Scholarship; Bailey Simons and Karlie Strickland received the Elite Fundraiser Scholarship; and Dallas Taylor and Taylor Palmer, received the Children’s Miracle Network Miracle Maker Scholarship. The winners were announced on Friday, August 9 after a day-long competition where the young ladies competed in personal interview, talent, on-stage question and evening wear. Corrine Olsen, Ephraim, was awarded the Emily Braithwaite Woman of Service Award. Olsen was honored for her many years of service in various capacities throughout Sanpete County. She currently serves as an advisor for Ephraim City Youth Council and volunteers with the Science Club and music groups at Manti High School. She is also on the Sanpete County Fair Board. In addition Olsen serves in her church, volunteers at the hospital and in the county 4-H

The Miss Sanpete County Organization is the only franchised Miss America pageant in Sanpete County. Abby Ivory, Miss Sanpete County director said, “Being a part of the Miss America Organization is an honor and provides excellent opportunities for young women to learn how to be leaders in their communities.” “These young ladies will focus their year of service on the four points of the crown,” said Ivory. “Service, Scholarship, Success and Style — Ally and Taylor have demonstrated they can exhibit these qualities as they begin their year of service.” Brotherson comes from a family

that has a tradition of serving in Sanpete County. “I come from a family where I make the fourth Miss Sanpete County,” said Brotherson. “Preceding me was my Aunt Debbie, my cousin Marci and my mother, Molly. I have always looked up to these strong women in my life.” Brotherson will focus her year of service on community volunteerism. “As I have served throughout my city in various positions, I have recognized a need for volunteering,” said Brotherson. “I am thankful for the volunteers we do have and want to encourage others to volunteer within their city as well.” Through her Social Initiative Statement, Brotherson will implement “L.I.V.E” — Learn the needs, become Involved, Volunteer, Enthusiastically! Brotherson looks forward to serving the citizens of Sanpete County. She will also compete at the Miss Utah competition in June 2020. Taylor Palmer said it feels completely surreal to be Miss Sanpete County’s Outstanding Teen. “I am so excited and extremely grateful to have this opportunity,” said Palmer. “I am looking forward to implementing my platform.” Palmer will focus her year of service Please see CROWNED, Page A6
