Dog rescued from Spring City irrigation pipe
A little over a week ago, a dog somehow managed to get stuck in an 18-inch irrigation pipe in Spring City. The pooch was in the water for over 3 hours before being rescued by the Spring City Fire Department. Somehow, the dog was sucked into the irrigation pipe and was lodged 12 feet down the pipe next to a valve. This required the Fire Depart-

ment to dig a new trench around the pond and get it drained to the point they could get the dog out. Luckily, veterinarian Summer Peterson who is a member of the volunteer department was on scene and able to help with stabilizing the dog. The dog spent the night at the vet but was released the next morning to its owner Jeff Edmunds.

Shake it off! L
ike people everywhere, each one of us in Sanpete have problems and adversity. I’m fond of saying, “if you think that someone doesn’t have problems, all that means is that you don’t know that person very well.” I’ve found that everyone I’ve ever become acquainted with, beyond the superficial, has problems big and small in their lives. It may be health concerns, family matters, financial stresses, or any one or a combination of many different things. At church we often sing the hymn “Lord, I Would Follow Thee.” A couple of the main messages of the song is that we shouldn’t judge each other and that we all “walk imperfectly.” A significant line in the lyrics reads: “In the quiet heart is hidden sorrow that the eye can’t see.” Then the next words ask the question, “Who am I to judge another…?” If you’re not familiar with this song, here’s the link which will not only give you the words, but will play the music for you. https://www. churchofjesuschrist.org/ music/library/hymns/ lord-i-would-follow-thee?lang=eng “Lord, I Would Follow Thee” Lyrics. 1. (as they used to sometimes say on American Bandstand years ago when they’d rate a record.) Many of you may be familiar with the following old story which relates to handling problems. I believe I may have shared a version of the story in this space some years ago, but I think it’s worth retelling in these times we’re living in right now. As far as I know, it comes once again from that prolific writer “Author Unknown.” See if the advice given in the story can apply to anything going on currently in your life. A parable is told of a farmer who owned an old
mule. The mule fell into the farmer’s old well. The farmer heard the mule braying – or whatever mules do when they fall into wells. After carefully assessing the situation, the farmer sympathized with the mule, but decided that neither the mule nor the well was worth the trouble of saving. Instead, he called his neighbors together. He told them what had happened and enlisted them to help haul dirt to bury the old mule in the well and put him out of his misery. Initially, the old mule was hysterical! But as the farmer and neighbors continued shoveling and the dirt hit his back, a thought struck the mule. It suddenly dawned on him that every time a shovel load of dirt landed on his back, he should shake it off and step up! This he did blow after blow. “Shake it off and step up – shake it off and step up – shake it off and step up!” – he repeated to encourage himself. No matter how painful the blows, or distressing the situation seemed, the old mule fought panic and just kept right on shaking it off and stepping up. You’re right! It wasn’t long before the old mule battered and exhausted, stepped triumphantly over the wall of that well. The thing that seemed like it would bury him, actually blessed him. And it was all because of the manner in which he handled his adversity. That’s life! If we face our problems and respond to them positively and refuse to give into panic, bitterness, or self-pity, the adversities that come along to bury us usually have within them the potential to benefit and bless us. Remember that forgiveness, faith, prayer, praise and hope are all excellent ways to “shake it off and step up” out of the wells in which we find ourselves. I know that advice like this is easier said than done. But there is some truth to the concept. Here’s hoping that our “wells” aren’t too deep and the dirt being thrown on us doesn’t have too many rocks in it. Let’s just keep shaking it off Sanpete. — Merrill

Spring in southern Utah with a BMW coupe
W
ith spring finally arriving in Utah the first week of April, it offered us a chance to spend a few days in St. George during our week with the new generation of the BMW 2. However, it was mostly for the sake of getting CRAIG & DEANNE to take an CONOVER extended road trip in “The Ultimate Driving Machine,” and that coming in the form of a coupe was just a huge bonus. It just so happened that a couple of months earlier we had rented a home to stay in with Craig’s sister Christi, her husband, Ray, and his mom, Pat, looking to get out of the cooler weather of the north by heading south into Utah’s warmer climes. We were rewarded somehow for our efforts with each of the four days in Utah’s southern corner reaching almost 90 degrees. Thursday morning, we loaded up the ample trunk space of the BMW M240i with two carry-on suitcases, a box of food, three pillows and a blanket and headed south on Interstate 15, leaving behind what had been snow earlier that week. The 2022 model year for the M240i heralds the second generation of the entry-level luxury sports coupe, and with it many great features and additions that make driving the BMW a truly exceptional experience, as we were to find over the next few days on our travels in the south desert. Inside, we were surrounded with comfort and, most importantly, technology that put the BMW at the head of its class. The seats were especially comfortable, and we can truly say we were energized after every drive, sometimes going over 150 miles between breaks, which were of course suggested by the BMW and its technology that seemed to know that we were tired and needed to stop. Another awesome addition was the BMW personal assistant, a feature we have come to completely enjoy. Simply by saying the words
The BMW M240i xDrive coupe as the sun starts its descent in the beautiful climes of southern Utah. “Hey, BMW” and asking for directions, climate controls and other information, the vehicle would take care of it automatically. It also now has the ability to tell the difference between driver and passenger. Thus, if Deanne wanted it warmer or cooler on the passenger side, all she ad to do was ask and the coupe would respond for only her side of the car. The navigation is now tied to the adaptive cruise control, along with getting outside information from others like the WAZE app, as it would alert to the upcoming problems along our path. This information would even be projected into the added heads-up display, things like slow traffic ahead, car on the side of the road ahead or even letting us know if there was an officer doing speed checks along the upcoming route. On a road trip such as the one we took to St. George, this type of information can be invaluable, as we found on our way home when the traffic was pretty much bumper-to-bumper the entire way back into Utah Valley. Seems that we were not the only ones who had the idea to head south that weekend. The adaptive cruise control was also a huge help in this endeavor, keeping the M240i within the posted limit, and would stop and go with ease as we traveled home, never having to reset
or worry about our speed. Our test ride also came with the addition of the BMW Live Cockpit, which upgrades the infotainment screen to a 10.5-inch touchscreen and puts a huge 12.3inch, high-definition LED display that is customizable as the driver’s display. These two additions alone make for a huge difference in the driving experience, especially on a longer journey like we took. Technology aside, the BMW M240i is one of the last remaining coupes with rear-wheel drive, as power can be sent via the xDrive option to just the rear or it can also be sent forward to the front if the situation calls for it, thus making under steer or over steer situations virtually nonexistent. Add this to the 3.0-liter inline six-cylinder BMW twin-power turbocharged engine that would deliver 382 horsepower with 369 foot-pounds of torque and rocket the coupe to 60 in a mere 4.1 seconds, and we had quite the “Ultimate Driving Machine” for the week. Any kind of turbo lag was not even noticeable as we passed others, accelerated from a complete stop or just needed more power along the way. Also included in the M240i was a launch control system that would allow us to get the quickest off-the-line starts possible from the vehicle, just in case a drag race was in the cards.
New this year to the M240i is a video feature that will record and store 40 seconds of video from around the car using the driver assistance cameras that can be downloaded through a USB port in the vehicle. In the case of an accident, it will keep 20 seconds of video before and 20 seconds after the crash recorded. Now there is a way to know who or what was at fault in an accident. Of course, Apple CarPlay was wireless, as has come to be the norm in a BMW with them being one of the first to get this technology working, and it gets better and better every time we are in a new one of their cars. Coupled with the wireless charger, our phones could have lived in the vehicle. It is also possible now through near field communication to unlock the coupe using an iPhone by just holding it near the door handle. This same key can be shared with up to five drivers, making it possible to put limits on different drivers such as speed, power and maximum radio volume — a parent’s dream with teenagers. Having the BMW for a trip to beautiful St. George was a treat in and of itself, again proving over and over that having “The Ultimate Driving Machine” is more than worth the price, especially on a road trip! Forest product permits on sale on Manti-La Sal PRICE – Manti-La Sal National Forest is issuing permits for fuelwood and other forest products forest-wide beginning June 1 and continuing through Nov. 30. Fuelwood permits on the forest are available at $5 per cord. There is a four-cord minimum purchase, and a 10-cord maximum per household.
Manti-La Sal National Forest offices are reopening to the public beginning June 6. Permits will be available in person or over the phone. To request a forest product permit for the Manti-La Sal National Forest via phone, please call the district you are planning to collect from and leave a voicemail with
a name and good call back phone number. Employees will process requests and take payments for permits over the phone during regular business hours from 8 a.m. to noon and 1 p.m. to 4:30 p.m. Upon requesting a permit, please allow the Forest 7-10 business days to mail the permit.
POSITION ANNOUNCEMENT
All rules associated with the permit will be the same as previous years. A valid permit is required prior to an individual collecting or removing any forest product, including fuelwood, from National Forest System lands.
As part of the permit, there will be maps of where to harvest fuelwood and a diagram of an approximate cord. Maps are also available on the Manti-La Sal website. The permit holder must be present with the
permit when cutting wood. It is also required that the permit holder fill out the number of cords collected until the permit is filled. Any changes will be posted on the Manti-La Sal National Forest website and Facebook page.

‘Candy Bomber’ honored with dedication, airlift re-creation BY HARRISON EPSTEIN

Every action has a ripple effect. One good deed leads to another, impacting hundreds, thousands, millions of people. The actions of Col. Gail S. Halvorsen, the “Candy Bomber” himself, have echoed across the United State and Europe for decades. On May 20-21, the late Utah County icon was honored by the U.S. Air Force, representatives from the German government and people whose lives he touched — whether he knew it or not. Halvorsen became a sensation when, during the Berlin Airlift of 1948, he dropped candy and gum to German children. “I would say Col. Gail Halvorsen is among the top three most popular, most famous Americans in Germany. He enhanced our German-American friendship his whole life,” said Frank Graefe, brigadier general defense attache, who attended the ceremonies on behalf of the German embassy and government. “He laid one of the foundations for our close friendship we have today.” Graefe told the Daily Herald that Halvorsen’s candy drops stand out in the shared history of Germany and the United States. He compared it to President John F. Kennedy’s 1963 speech in West Berlin and President Ronald Reagan’s 1987 remarks at the Berlin Wall as moments that live with people around the world. On hand for both the celebrations were several people who lined the fences in Berlin waiting for the drops. To make sure the children on the ground knew it was him,

On the Provo Airport tarmac were both a C-54, housed with Halvorsen history and artifacts, and an active C-17 Globemaster III. The C-17, however, was the star of the evening. Mobility Command, Halvorsen’s grandchildren were asked to step on stage and reveal the new name of the aircraft. It now reads “Spirit of the Candy Bomber,” with images of children pointing at candy parachuting out of a C-54. The plane has been involved in both the U.S. evacuation of Afghanistan in 2021 and delivering aid and supplies to Ukraine. While Friday guaranteed Halvorsen’s spirit would continue flying, providing help and hope in equal measure, his actions

were replicated Saturday at the Spanish Fork Airport. Through the morning, children and adults alike were encouraged to tour more displays of memorabilia and old-school military vehicles and gear and listen to music from Travis Brass, an ensemble of the Air Force Band of the Golden West. All of it a preamble, a warm-up act for a re-creation fo Halvorsen’s candy drop with specialized parachutes and chocolate. As the all-ages crowd watched intently, a C-17 was loaded with 500 chocolate bars and slowly crept along the runway before ultimately taking flight. As it circled Spanish Fork and surrounding Utah County, Gen. Minihan again spoke to the crowd, calling Halvorsen royalty in Utah and among members of the U.S. Air Force. He recalled to the crowd one person’s story of being a child in Berlin during the airlift. They never got any candy but said it didn’t matter because they now had hope. “The sheer action of what we do has an impact beyond those that are directly benefiting from it,” Minihan said. He was joined by several individuals who came from Germany for the events, and Rep. Burgess Owens. Owens also spoke briefly, discussing Halvorsen’s significance in history and the recent passing in the U.S. House of a bill renaming the Provo Veterans Center after the pilot. Seated in the front row, next to family members and others connected to the airlift, was Sgt. Ralph Dionne. Dionne, now president of the Berlin Airlift Veterans Association, served six months in Germany,

He appreciated the chance to relive his youth and see children of today take in the grandeur of the candy drops. “Today was one of the most fantastic days of my life. To see the people gathering here, the enthusiasm, all the volunteers,” Dionne said. “Everything seems to have been guided by God because one thing after another falls in place. ... the aircraft in 73 years — since the original drops. Living now in New Hampshire, Dionne hoped to be in Utah with Halvorsen for his 100th birthday, but COVID-19 prevented him from doing so. Disappointed he missed seeing Halvorsen years ago, Dionne made sure to be in Utah to honor his fellow service member. While both days were used to honor the life of Col. Halverson, the original plan was to have him on-hand for the celebrations. Halvorsen died Feb. 16 at the age of 101. Graefe called it a “great idea” to still have the ceremonies to honor him. Even having passed away, Dionne feels his fellow pilot was at the ceremony in spirit, and imparted wisdom for those who never had the chance to meet him: “Do like Gail Halvorsen. He said, ‘Thumbs up, Ralph, and keep smiling.’ Everybody should do that.”
