NSHS names ‘S Award’ recipients MT. PLEASANT — North Sanpete High School announced recipients of the coveted S Award and Outstanding Senior Athletes in a recorded video presentation.

Each senior will receive a copy of the video since social distancing is still in effect due to COVID-19.

Outstanding senior athletes This year, the female senior athlete award was tied so both Sarah Oldroyd and Addelyn Brotherson received the award along with Alexander Mower, male recipient.

S Awards Darren Anderson has had a busy four years in band, drama, choir, and Family Career and Community Leaders of America (FCCLA). He participated in jazz band, pep band, and marching band all four years of high school. In drama he received superior ratings at both the region and state level. He has been a member of the concert choir

for four years. He has served as president and vice-president of FCCLA. He won multiple second and third place finishes in state competitions and is the family and consumer science sterling scholar. He is a member of the National Honor Society, and has a 3.89 GPA. Emily Kerksiek has been active in music, journalism, & Future Business Leaders of America (FBLA). She participated in marching band for three seasons and concert choir for three years. She served as the choir president.

She participated in many solo and ensemble contests, where she earned high marks in piano and violin. She was very active in FBLA participating in many competitions including a first place honor in Region Marketing. She is on the honor roll, is a member of the National Honor Society, and has maintained a 3.996 GPA. Orange Peel is a student who has also been highly ac-

tive in athletics, music, and National Honor Society. He ran cross country four years, track three years and football and tennis for a year. He was Academic All-Region and Academic All-State in cross country and track. He served as the freshman class secretary, and three years in concert choir. He was a threeyear member of the pep band and participated in a school musical. He is a member of the National Honor Society, served as their vice-president, was the science Sterling Scholar area runner- up and has maintained a perfect 4.0 GPA throughout high school.

Doctor thanks patients, still gives good advice Being able to “retire” has allowed me to spend more time with my family and do some things that I would like to do. My oldest son has been accepted to dental school and is here working for the forest service. Being “retired” has allowed me to spend time with him before he leaves for school, which has been fun. Also being off has given me time to enjoy just simple things like working in my yard, working on old cars, playing golf (new for me), and building stuff.

This COVID outbreak has not allowed me to say goodbye and thank you to so many who have become my friends.

It has also restricted some activities that I would have enjoyed otherwise. This has been

Insulin savings program sees early implementation

MT. PLEASANT — Central Utah Public Health Department (CUPHD) reported 32 cases of COVID-19 in the Six County area of Juab, Millard, Piute, Sanpete, Sevier and Wayne counties.

This week, CUPHD reported 10 cases, up two new cases, in Juab, with eight recovered; Millard, six cases, one was hospitalized, now recovering at home, five recovered; Piute, one case; Sanpete, seven cases, five recovered, one was hospitalized, now recovering at home; and Sevier with eight cases, seven recovered. Wayne County has no reported cases.

There were four cases in the 15-24 age group; eight in the 25-44 age group; 14 in the 45-64 age group; five in the 65-84 age group and only one case in the 85+ age group. There are no cases in the less than one or one-14 age groups.

As of press time, there have been 2,764 people tested in the Six County area.

SALT LAKE CITY – HB 207 Insulin Access Amendments, sponsored by Representative Norm Thurston (R-Provo), includes a first-of-its-kind provision for the state to create and provide access to a bulk purchasing program for insulin.

The bill instructs the Public Employees Health Plan (PEHP) to allow any Utah resident to take advantage of PEHP’s negotiated discounted rates for insulin products.

These discounts result in an approximately 60 percent discount from the prices that many people are currently paying.

The bill instructed PEHP to make this happen by Jan. 1, 2021. However, PEHP has been able to accelerate implementation, and access to the program will open on June 1, seven months ahead of schedule.

struggles are not readily apparent, so a bit of patience is in order from us all. We all just need to be more kind and considerate of each other.

Some struggle with pain, depression, physical disorders, and still much more, but we all have differences and challenges that we need to work on, so smile, laughter really is the best medicine.

We will continue to live in our home in Ephraim, because we love it here and have many friends and family around. Thanks again for so many great years of practice.

Dear Editor: To all my friends: I thought I had better take a moment to thank so many of you who have been so kind me, not only recently as a result of my cancer, but also those over the years whom I have had the privilege to care for. Some may want some details. I am doing pretty darn well, I am continuing with chemotherapy and am following doctor’s orders.

The treatment has caused a neuropathy in my hands and feet, but I am working through that. I plan on living for a long time, but if not, my faith gives me peace to know that there is much to look forward to after this life. Not that I am anxious to go, but it does bring me comfort.

A Twinkie renaissance I am announcing to the world that I am currently in the midst of a “Twinkie Renaissance. Yes, it’s the Hostess Twinkie snack cakes that I’m talking about. After years of not eating what is officially described as “golden sponge cake with creamy filling,” I am now “back on the wagon” or maybe “back off the wagon” – depending on how you look at it.

I need to define my terms here. The first definition of the word Renaissance has to do with the revival of art, architecture, and literature, etc. during the 14th through the 16th centuries. This is when the world came out of the “dark ages” and started producing and appreciating the finer things in life. The cultural aspects of society advanced.

The second definition of the word Renaissance has to be with a revival of or a renewed interest in something. That’s what I’m talking about in regards to Twinkies in my world.

I broke my “Twinkie fast” last October when our family gathered at a rented beach house in Oceanside, California. The previous week’s tenants, who were part of our general circle of friends and acquaintances, left food in the pantry to be used by whomever came along next. We followed the pattern when we departed. However, because of me, we did not leave any Twinkies.

When I first saw the Twinkies in the pantry, not long after our arrival, I was faced with a dilemma. To eat or not to eat? That was the question.

It wasn’t as if I had to decide whether to buy them or not. They were right there. It seemed like a little devil was right there on my shoulder saying, “Here you go Merrill. You know you love these high fructose corn syrup goodies. Go ahead, have one!”

But, wait a second. The little angel with a halo, on my other shoulder, whispered, “If you eat one, you know what will happen. It will be just like the story of the little Dutch boy who put his finger in the dike to stop the leak in order to save Holland.

If you eat a Twinkie it would be like removing your finger. The dam will break and it will be a Twinkie flood that will take an emergency order for action from FEMA, and the International Red Cross combined to achieve recovery. It could be the end of the world, as we now know it!”’

Looking at the partial box of Twinkies, I pondered.

I looked into the past. I looked into the future. I looked at my “not ready for beach time waistline.”

I wondered. I weighed the pros and cons.

I ate a Twinkie. And, I didn’t feel badly about it.

In fact, when we went to the store, I bought more Twinkies.

In the months since, I have bought and shared with others the following Hostess snack cakes: Twinkies, Sno-Balls,

Zingers, Cupcakes – and perhaps Ho Hos and Ding Dongs. I have a hard time remembering. I have to say that I like them all.

I’m trying not to overdo it with the snack cakes. I’m doing pretty well at proving the little angel wrong.

Believe it or not, at an extended family, Memorial Day picnic last Monday, I ate only one of the chocolate cake Twinkies out of the box that I brought.

After eating my single Twinkie, I walked around to various kids and said, “I have a feeling that you’d like one of these.” Nobody turned me down. What powerful intuitive feelings I’ve been blessed with!

There’s so much more to be said about Twinkies. I’ve found that the history, facts and popular culture surrounding Twinkies is huge.

It’s fluffy with information, creamy with cultural references, and delicious in its popularity.

I do have to say that the urban legend that a Twinkie will last forever just isn’t true. Originally, the Twinkie was meant to last about 26 days. As of 2012, stronger preservatives were added and it is now a 45day shelf life product. This makes it the perfect “ship by mail” birthday present.

By the way, I learned in March that Utah Senator Mitt Romney is a fan of Twinkies. He was given a birthday cake made of Twinkies by his staff. This was long after my Twinkie Renaissance began. I believe that he heard of my Twinkie revival and copied me. That’s my story and I’m sticking to it.

I’m suspecting that my wife will be making a small Twinkie birthday cake for me on my next birthday.

It might be homemade. I saw that there is a “secret recipe” for homemade Twinkies on the Internet.

I’m thinking that I need to be open-minded about having more revivals in my life. I believe we all could have some renewals of interest for good things in our lives. They don’t all have to be sugary, empty calorie snack revivals. They can be personal character attributes or acts of service.

My wife recently had a renewal of interest in sending hand-written letters and notes to people through the mail. Recipients of those personal mailings have sincerely appreciated getting that kind of “old fashioned” communication. Letters have been sent back. I don’t think this will replace email, but it’s an ongoing demonstration of personal effort and connection.

I believe that this may be a time when many are re-discovering a Renaissance of Kindness, Tolerance, Love, Reading, Meditation, Walking, Friendship, Cheering Others Up, Interest in the Lives of Others, Serving, Assisting, and on and on.

I could be wrong, but I think this is a time for each of us to experience something bigger and better than the re-discovery of Twinkies.

Fill your gardens with beautiful plants that produce an abundance of seeds the birds will love. You’ll enjoy the flowers as well as the birds that visit to dine on the seeds. Best of all, there is no feeder to refill or clean.

Sunflowers are likely the first seed-producing plant that comes to mind. Their dark brown centers turn to seeds that attract a wide variety of birds and of course squirrels to your yard. Want some local elk or deer meat? Apply for antlerless hunts, starting May 28 SALT LAKE CITY — If putting locally sourced, nutritious meat on the table while enjoying Utah’s beautiful outdoors sounds good to you, take note that the application period for Utah’s 2020 antlerless hunts opens soon.

Depending on the age, a cow elk can provide between 120 to nearly 200 pounds of boneless meat. That meat can then be eaten in a variety of ways, including hamburger, roasts, steaks, stews, stir-fry or in fajitas. A doe deer will provide approximately 40 pounds of boneless meat.

Beginning Thursday, May 28 at 8 a.m., you can apply for a permit to hunt cow elk, cow moose, doe deer, doe pronghorn and, for the first time, ewe bighorn sheep, in Utah. (Although you cannot apply for both a cow moose permit and a ewe bighorn sheep permit in the same year — you must pick one or the other.)

“The antlerless big game hunts are a great opportunity to not only harvest meat and make some great memories outdoors, but also to help manage wildlife populations and maintain healthy herds and landscapes,” DWR Big Game Coordinator Covy Jones said.

In December 2019, the Utah Wildlife Board approved several amendments to the hunt drawing process, several of which apply to the antlerless permits. If a hunter surrenders their permit(s) at least 30 days before the season opens, their previously acquired bonus/preference points will be reinstated and the waiting period will be waived, if applicable. However, if they surrender the permit(s) less than 30 days before the season opens, they will lose their bonus/preference points.

Previously, it was difficult to reallo-

cate those permits when there was less than 30 days’ notice, so this change will help prevent lost hunting opportunities.

Another change to be aware of is that if a hunter obtains a general-season antlerless permit over the counter (after the antlerless drawing) or a private-lands-only permit, they will lose any preference points they’ve previously accrued for that specific antlerless hunt. If they purchase an antlerless elk control permit, they will not lose their preference points.

Boaters will be asked not to approach staff performing the inspections and decontaminations, so social distancing recommendations can be maintained and neither individual is put at risk.

In addition to receiving an inspection when leaving Lake Powell, boaters can also help prevent the spread of quagga mussels by doing the following: • Clean: Boaters should wipe all water, mud, plant materials and other debris from their boats. In particular, make sure to inspect the anchor and sea strainer.

• Drain: Boaters are required to pull all drain plugs and leave them out during transport and storage after boating on Lake Powell. All water should be completely drained from ballast tanks, bilges and live wells. Boaters with outboard or inboard/outboard engines should drop the lower unit to drain those areas, as well.

Also, inspect the cooling intake or water system on the boat.

• Dry: All boats with ballast tanks, inboard engines or inboard/outboard engines retain water at all times, and therefore, will need to meet a 30-day dry time if not professionally decontaminated.

Clark E. Bronson public to search, find geologic hazards

1939~2020 FAIRVIEW — Clark Everice Bronson, 81, born March 10, 1939 in Kamas, UT, passed away at his home in Fairview, UT May 21, 2020.

His parents, Guy Everice Bronson and Lerean Fitzgerald Bronson preceded him in death.

He married Pauline Joyce Turnbow Sept. 18, 1958, in the Salt Lake LDS Temple. Clark studied art at Art Instruction Schools and the University of Utah. Arnold Friberg was his finest teacher.

Clark was a member of the National Sculpture Society, Society of Animal Artists, Northwest Rendezvous Group, Cowboy Hall of Fame and National Academy of Western Art. During his career, Clark received many recognitions and awards. His watercolor, oil and charcoal illustrations appeared on advertisements, magazine covers, Christmas cards, calendars, etc.

In addition, he illustrated three books for Rand McNally, but perhaps Clark is bestknown for his bronze sculptures of birds and animals.

For many years they have been purchased by numerous collectors throughout the United States. Clark was a gentleman. He will be remembered for his wisdom, integrity, kindness, faith, and his love of family, animals and

beautiful places.

He and Pauline filmed wildlife while living on their boat, the Sea Runner, in Alaska for about 30 summers. Clark made several videos from the footage they took.

He will be missed by his wife of nearly 62 years, Pauline, and his three children, Jeffrey (Brooke) Bronson, Heidi (Leon Dorscher) Bronson, and Perry (Leslie) Bronson. Two sisters, Dixie Gibbons and Peggy (Don) Butcher survive him, as well as seven grandchildren and four great-grandchildren.

A graveside service will be held at 11 a.m., Friday, May 29 in the Fairview City Cemetery in Fairview, UT. We thank family members and Hospice workers for their outstanding service in caring for Clark.

SALT LAKE CITY — The Utah Geological Survey (UGS) recently released the Utah Geologic Hazards Portal, an online mapping application that provides information on the type, location, and relative susceptibility of geologic hazards.

Users of the new app can zoom in to their location or search by address to find geologically active faults, landslides, and a host of other geologic hazards in selected areas.

The app also includes a report generator designed to provide a summary of information for specific sites.

“Information is power, and this hazards app is full of good information. It’s a simple, but powerful tool that can be used in conjunction with UGS geologic hazard investigation guidelines to help protect Utahns from death, injury, and economic and financial loss,” said UGS Hazards Geologist Jessica Castleton. The app contains post-2008 UGS geologic hazard map data and data from other sources for parts of Utah. Available mapping is at a scale large enough for users to see details such as individual buildings and lots.

The app does not eliminate the need for detailed geologic hazard investigations by Utah-licensed professionals, which further define hazards at specific sites and provide recommendations to miti-

gate them to safe, acceptable levels.

“While we recommend site-specific hazard investigations prior to building, it’s up to local agencies to regulate development in areas with geologic hazards,” said UGS Hazards Geologist Greg McDonald.

The Utah Geologic Hazards Portal includes recently released detailed mapping of ground surface rupturing faults capable of causing significant damage along the Wasatch Front. The app also delineates special study zones, where site-specific fault investigations are recommended, around the

mapped traces of the Wasatch and associated faults. This mapping provides crucial information for reducing earthquake risk in the state’s most densely populated and rapidly developing areas.

Information on geologically active faults, earthquake ground shaking, and landslides are available statewide.

Comprehensive geologic hazards data, including multiple hazards related to earthquakes, floods, landslides, and problem soils and rocks, are currently available for the west side of the Salt Lake Valley, St. George, Cedar City (in final review), Moab, the State Route 9 corridor, and the heavily visited areas of Zion National Park and the Glen Canyon National Recreation Area.

Areas shown with completed detailed mapping were prioritized by availability of funding and need, with rapidly developing areas

with multiple previously unmapped hazards completed first. It takes an incredible amount of resources to conduct a thorough investigation and map the suite of geologic hazards that threaten various parts of Utah. Additional mapping is ongoing and currently prioritized for and underway in northern Utah County and Bryce Canyon National Park. Mapping will continue to be added to the app as it is completed.

The Utah Geologic Hazards Portal can be accessed from the UGS website at https:// geology.utah.gov/apps/hazards/. The report generator was developed in conjunction with the Utah Automated Geographic Reference Center.

The Utah Geological Survey, a division of the Utah Department of Natural Resources, provides timely scientific information about Utah’s geologic environment, resources, and hazards.

Tommy W. Tucker 1935~2020 MT. PLEASANT — Tommy W. Tucker, 84, of Mt. Pleasant passed away May 18, 2020, in his home after a long battle with cancer.

Tom was born Aug. 9, 1935, in Boulder, Colorado, to Royal Winn and Carrie Tucker.

Tom is survived by his daughter, Loralee (Kelly) Holden; daughter-in-law, Ally Tucker; nine grandchildren and 13 great-grandchil-

dren.

He is preceded in death by his parents, Royal Winn and Carrie Tucker; brother, Dennis Tucker; and sons, Steve Tucker and Tony Tucker.

Tom was a graduate of Wasatch Academy, where he later served for several years on the Board of Trustees. He was a devoted member of the Presbyterian Church and served in the U.S. Air Force.

Tom enjoyed the outdoors,

woodworking, and as a member of multiple organizations including the Masonic Lodge, Order of Eastern Star, and Shriner.

A viewing was held at his home, 366 South 300 West, Mt. Pleasant, UT; on Friday, May 22.

NORTH SANPETE HOLDS ‘PARADE OF GRADUATES’

North Sanpete graduates take part in the graduation parade held last Thursday, May 21. It was a fun event for residents to show support to the 2020 graduation class, since regular graduation ceremonies couldn’t take place due to the Coronavirus pandemic.

NSSD announces summer food program MT. PLEASANT—North Sanpete School District recently announced the “Grab and Go” meals that have been offered to children during the COVID-19 pandemic will continue to be provided throughout the summer.

The summer food program will run from June 1 to July 17, except July 3, due to the national holiday.

The Grab and Go meals service will be offered at the following elementary schools and bus stops.

She is on the honor roll and is a member of the National Honor Society. She has a 4.0 GPA. Sarah Oldroyd has been highly involved in sports and music. She was a key member of the volleyball team for four years, softball team for four years and four years of basketball. Her teams took region three times and she was named Academic All Region in basketball, volleyball and softball. She has participated with the pep band, jazz band and is a member of the concert choir. She is on the honor roll and has maintained a 3.99 GPA. Tawnee Allen is a student who has spent four years in jazz band, four years in pep band and four years in marching band. Honorary S Award Jed Brewer, who is a retiring teacher, was presented an Honorary S Award. He has taught at North Sanpete School District for 19 years from 2001-2020.
