Summit to plant the seeds of more creative investment

GREEN RIVER — Co-hosted by Epicenter (Green River) and Granary Arts (Ephraim), the 2022 Spring Summit in Green River brings together designers, architects, artists, curators, cultural producers, and community organizers to gather around the concept of “Home.” This three-day event is structured around the cultivation and strengthening of creative investment in rural Utah by convening a network of leaders who are passionate about the culture and community of rural areas, thus creating opportunities for new collaborative work to develop in rural Utah and beyond.

Maxine McKean Anderson 1933 – 2022

Paul Blaine Stevens Paul Blaine Stevens traded in his leathered, calloused hands and worn-out body to build his dream cabin in the sky on March 21st, 2022. His wife, daughter, and dog were there to see him off on his next journey. He was welcomed with open arms by those who before him by; his mother, Edna Lucile Stevens; his preceded his father, Blaine Stevens; his sister, Debbie Kennah; his brother, Glen Stevens; his second oldest daughter, Connie Christensen; his son, Allen Paul “Moe” Stevens; and his great-grandson, Jaiden Kirk Christensen.

During his 79 years of life, Paul spent time being a turkey farmer, he worked at the Moroni Processing Plant, he worked as a Chief Turd Herder at the Moroni Treatment Plant, worked as a Police Officer (where he spent time keeping track of his own daughters) for Moroni City. He was a volunteer for the SanPitch search and rescue crew where he aided and helped many people. He was the proud founder and owner of SanPitch Construction & Log Homes where he built many beautiful cabins and homes throughout SanPete valley; he gained numerous, everlasting friendships throughout the years. For the last 30 years, Paul enjoyed his 1960 class reunions at his cabin where he and his wife stayed connected with all their classmates. Paul was a family man and raised four lovely (and wild) children. His children went on to give Paul many grandkids and many great grandkids that he loved and adored. Paul had always told the grand-

children that they were born with the wrong belly buttons.

There are many things that Paul loved and was known for but having a good story and a laugh was at the top of his list. Paul was a storyteller with a sense of humor. Paul had a passion and love for woodworking where he spent a lot of his spare time in his shop with his friend’s enjoying stories and adult beverages. Paul loved to fish; Velveeta cheese and dead worms were his bait of choice. He loved hunting and his prize moose was found in Alaska. Paul was known in the family as MacGyver and could figure out a solution to every problem- he’d always find a use for Lola’s garage sale finds which also drove him crazy. Paul was a joker and was known for having a “birdie” in his pocket.

There will not be a formal funeral, but in the spirit of his life, we will be having a celebration of life at his personal built cabin Fairview Lakes on 7/30/2022. We encourage all friends and family to come and share their favorite memories of Paul.

Our beloved mother, grandmother, great grandmother, aunt, and friend, Maxine McKean Anderson, returned to our Heavenly Father on March 21, 2022, at the age of 88 in her daughter’s home in Mt. Pleasant, Utah. Maxine was born November 24th, 1933 to Theodorus “Mack” Emery McKean, and Iva Shepherd in Birdseye, Utah. She was born at home, the youngest of eight children, seven girls, and one brother. Much of her childhood was spent helping with the daily farm chores including raising chickens, hauling hay, and herding sheep.

She often expressed how grateful she was for her loving parents and wonderful upbringing. They have all passed on now, as she was the last living member of her immediate family. She attended elementary, junior high, and high school in Spanish Fork where she enjoyed twirling baton with the school marching band and had many friends that she stayed close to throughout her life.

She married the love of her life Gary Dean Anderson, December 10th, 1952 in the Manti Temple.

Maxine and Gary made their home in Fairview and had nine children.

While Gary herded sheep on the mountain in the summer, Maxine cared for their children at home and always maintained a beautiful large garden. She bottled and preserved all the food she grew. In the winter, they spent many memorable family Christmases together out on the desert with their sheep herd. They were married for 54 years until his passing in 2006.

Her greatest joy was her family. She loved and was loved by her large extended family. She always looked forward to family get-togethers, reunions, and holidays. She attended all the family events. She especially enjoyed gathering with everyone on the 24th of July for the annual parade and spending time together at the Anderson cabin.

She was a faithful and long-life member of the Fairview 1st Ward of the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints. She enjoyed many close asso-

Unpopular opinions ciations with her ward family. She had a deep love for the Savior. She served in many church callings including Primary President and Relief Society President. Maxine and Gary served two full-time missions: the California Anaheim Mission and the South Dakota Rapid City Mission. In her later life, she loved serving as an ordinance worker in the Manti Temple for over 15 years. Her faith and goodness blessed the lives of all who knew her.

She is survived by her children: Roger (Donna), Eddie (Kim), Margo (Michael) Olsen, Victor (Shauntel), Steven (Laura), Bradley (Lisa), and Tracy (Melanie); daughter-inlaw Kathy Anderson; 32 grandchildren and 50 great-grandchildren. She was preceded in death by her daughter, Peggy (David) Samons, her son Eugene Anderson, two grandsons Clint Anderson and Travis Olsen, her husband, parents, and siblings.

We know she is having a joyous reunion in Heaven reunited with her eternal companion as well as many loved ones beyond the veil.

The family would like to express their gratitude for the many kindnesses in thought and deed, and give a special thanks to IHC Hospice, Rural Senior Adult Services (RSAS), and Margo and Mike for their loving care for Mom during her final years.

Funeral services will be held Saturday, March 26th at 11 a.m. in the Fairview 1st Ward Chapel, 122 S. State. A viewing will be held at the same address on Friday, March 25th, 6:00 pm - 8:00 pm and prior to the service, 9:00 am 10:30 am. Interment will be at the Fairview Cemetery. ontrary to “popular opinion,” there is “unpopular opinion.”

Majority opinion necessarily means that minority opinion exists. Each person is unique and carries an individualized set of beliefs and opinions. Believe it or not, this is also true right here in Sanpete County.

An opinion I encountered years ago which is an example of what I’m talking about was summed up by the message I saw on a T- shirt. It was worn by a woman who didn’t have children, nor did she want any. The shirt had a picture of a woman with her hand to her head and the caption read something like this, “Oh No – I forgot to have kids!”

Sometimes we assume that 100% of the population of child-bearing-aged Sanpeters want children.

I’m sure that the majority do want families. But there is a minority opinion and philosophy out there taking a contrary stand.

Some people just don’t feel “cut out” for parenthood. Unfortunately, there are some who are parents who should have considered the issue more carefully before having kids.

I’m reminded of an Ogden Nash poem. I don’t think that Mr. Nash was sincerely against children, as he wrote lots of wonderful children’s literature. However, I’m led to believe on the basis of a few of his poems that he was sometimes frustrated by children and he vented his frustration through his writing.

The poem I’m thinking of is too long to repeat the whole thing here. The title of it is, “Did Someone Say “Babies?””

The opening line reads: “Everyone who has a baby thinks everybody who hasn’t a baby ought to have a baby.”

Some of the intermediate lines are: “The idea apparently being that just by being fruitful - You are doing something beautful, Which if it is true - Means that the common housefly is several million times more beautiful than me or you.”

The final line: “Down with the kiddies!”

(By the way, the word

“beautful” above is not misspelled. Ogden Nash was famous for inventing words to make a rhyme work. For example, “Each spring they beautify our suburb, the ladies of the garden cluburb”) Contrasting opinions exist in Sanpete on most every other issue you can think of. As homogeneous of a society as we are, there is still diversity. And that’s a good thing.

Many positions on issues are not inherently good or bad. They are simply different. Opinions are usually formed based on personal point of view.

These differ from person to person.

I ended up on opposite sides of an issue in a conversation with a fellow Sanpeter some years back.

Simply put, I was in favor of paving the Ephraim Canyon road. My friend was strongly opposed to the paving.

We both had our reasons.

To me it was a “no brainer.”

To him it was a “no brainer.” (Between the two of us we had “no brains.”)

Isn’t it interesting that two semi-educated guys can see things so differently? (how either one of us earned college degrees is an indictment of higher education) So – what’s the “bottom line” of all of this opinion discussion? I think we can look to Aretha Franklin for the answer. The “queen of soul” spelled it out for us, “R- E- S- P- E- C- T.” Even opinions which are unpopular to us personally deserve to be held by those silly enough to hold them. (just kidding – but still true) Some issues, usually political ones, are hotly debated and we benefit from the tugging back and forth over the relative merits of the arguments pro and con.

But in dealing with some opinions, I believe the proper thing to do is to use the “disagree agreeably” method. Using our first mentioned issue as an example, one could say, “I respect your choice to not have children. I’m sure your reasons are personally valid.” And that’s my opinion. — Merrill

children will become caught in the middle of their parent’s conflict. It will also help children avoid saying goodbye and leaving one parent to be with the other.

Ease children’s feelings of guilt and stress. Children often feel guilty when they leave a parent. It can be difficult for them to go through repeated separations and reunions. Parents should encourage their children to talk about their feelings. Children need to know from both parents that it is okay to love and see the other parent.

It is important that children are not used as spies or messengers

between parents.

Get to know your children’s friends. Allowing children to invite their friends to their house or to join family activities shows them that their parents are interested and care about who they spend time with.

Involve nonresidential parents. Children need regular contact with their nonresidential parent. Both parents should stay actively involved in their child’s life. A positive relationship and regular connection with the nonresidential parent help promote a positive adjustment for the child.

Get involved in children’s

school activities. Nonresidential parents should make an effort to attend parent-teacher conferences, sporting events and other school activities.

This keeps parents involved in their children’s lives and lets them know that both parents want to be there for them.

Establish regular household routines. Avoid the “Disneyland parent” syndrome of doing strictly fun activities when the children are visiting. Children need structure and routines. Knowing what to expect when they are at each house will make their transition easier.

2022 Equinox proves to be a good fit for anyone T he Chevrolet Equinox has had a very unique and interesting 17-year history as it has grown and shrunk within the SUV domain. Back with its introduction, the Equinox sported a 3.4-liter V-6 engine and was 189 inches long, slotting it very nicely into CRAIG & DEANNE the midCONOVER sized SUV category, although it came with only 185 horsepower.

This engine was changed in the 2008 model year to a 3.6-liter size that increased power to 264 ponies, making the Equinox a much more engaging drive (if not a better choice for gas mileage).

The second generation of the Chevy model was introduced in 2010 with a number of different engine choices, and the 3.6-liter V-6 got a boost to 301 horsepower in 2013, making it the most powerful version of the Equinox to that point.

In 2018, Chevrolet took a turn with the size of the Equinox and, in our opinion, their target market. At that time, the car maker seemed to be designing the Equinox as more of an entry-level SUV that would appeal to smaller families and even the older generation like ourselves who were looking for more room and a comfortable way to get around every day while still having the AWD feature that would manage bad weather.

It was replaced with a couple of different versions of a turbocharged power plant: a 1.5-liter, four-cylinder engine that made 170 horsepower and a 2.0-liter engine that made 252 horsepower.

Utah women invest $195K into women and girls SALT LAKE CITY — The Utah Women’s Giving Circle, a grassroots membership group formed in 2011 to change the statistics for women and girls in Utah, awarded its eleventh round of grants, having invested more than $195,000 through a total of 56 high impact nonprofit projects.

Members voted on March 16 to award their collective pool of $15,000 across four initiatives, targeting essential services and women returning to the workforce in the wake of the COVID-19 pandemic:

$4,000 Grant: Your Community Connection Family Crisis Center Flexible funding to support domestic violence victims in becoming self-sufficient, such as fees for birth certificates, driver’s licenses, and bank accounts.

$4,000 Grant: Family Support Center Supporting reduced-cost mental health services to women and families who are uninsured, as low as $10 per visit.

$4,000 Grant: Fight Against Domestic Violence Providing immediate, onetime help for domestic violence victims facing financial emergencies, such as help paying off utility bills or attorney costs for divorce proceedings.

$3,000 Grant: Project Read Supporting tutoring and small group instruction, helping women improve their ability to read, write, compute, and use technology to improve their opportunities in life.
