Sanpete Predictions for 2022 O

ver the years, I’ve sometimes made a few predictions for Sanpete County. Many of the predictions I’ve made in the past are still on my mind, even if they haven’t yet come true. I just might have been a little premature with some of them.

Before I get to my predictions, I want to mention that the Chinese calendar has us now going into the “Year of the Tiger” — (Feb. 1st — Jan. 31st) My research shows that according to Chinese astrology, MERRILL 2022 will be a year OGDEN of extremes. We are all in for significant changes in our lives.

According to chinahighlights. com, this would be a good year to have a baby. A baby born this year will be smart, humorous, and good at socializing. Tigers usually have good luck with making money.

So, let’s see. If you’ve been thinking about having a baby, now is the time to umm get busy. Famous tiger year people include, Queen Elizabeth II, Tom Cruise, Leonardo DiCaprio and Lady Gaga.

Strangely, Tiger Woods was born in the “Year of the Rabbit.”

Okay, month by month, here’s what I see happening in Sanpete in 2022.

1) January: President Biden, makes a surprise visit to Sanpete County. Air Force One lands on the Highway 89 straightaway in the Indianola Valley. The limousine entourage speeds down the county with a quick stop at a turkey ranch where the president correctly makes references to Benjamin Franklin’s idea that the turkey should be named as the national bird. It is pointed out that Sanpete has both turkeys and bald eagles.

MT. PLEASANT — Sanpete Valley Hospital welcomed the hospital’s first baby of the new year on Monday, Jan. 3, at 7:26 a.m.

Amelia Lose Uasila’a Vaha, a baby girl, weighing seven pounds eight ounces and measuring 18 inches long was born to Jordann and Pataleone Vaha. Dr. Eric Jones was the delivering physician. Mother and baby are doing well. Amelia will be joining her big brother and big sister.

Jordann, Amelia’s mom, shared the story of their decision to have this baby be a “surprise” and not find out the gender until after the baby was born. While visiting with the oldest sibling, the sister, stated “she didn’t need another brother, the one she has is perfect — so she wanted a sister. If it was a brother — they could sell him to grandma for $2.” Amelia’s siblings are thrilled to have her as part of the family.

As a member of the Spanish Fork City Council, he helped found Strawberry Electric, a hydroelectric plant that eventually evolved into Strawberry Electric Service District and later South Utah Valley Electric Service District. He served on various electric service boards for more than three decades.

Aaron LaMar Hamilton 1930 – 2021

Carol Day Doyle 1945 – 2022

Carol Day Doyle, 76, born October 31, 1945 passed away peacefully at her home January 5, 2022.

Funeral services will be held at Fairview City Fourth Ward church January 15th, at 1 PM, with visiting time before the service from 11:30 to 12:30.

Carol was an amazingly classy and loving person.

She loved you just how you came. The Good, the Bad, and the Ugly. She had a close group of friends and a whole lot of family.

Carol was a graduate of North Sanpete High School. She worked for Easter Seals at the Sanpete County Bookmobile Library in Fairview and in more recent years at the Fairview Museum where many items were donated from her family. She loved these jobs in her community.

Carol loved her family, animals, sewing, reading, and words. She had a large vocabulary and if you asked what her favorite book was, she would say the dictionary.

Carol was preceded in death by her father and mother, George and Florence Day, her oldest brother Dennis Day, and her oldest sister Lazon Riddle Cox Sorensen.

She is survived by her daughter Rayna (Troy) Prettyman, two grandchildren Ivy Nicole Kolb and Brady Lee Kolb; two step-granddaughters, Jennifer Prettyman and Rachel (Matt) Blackwell. Four great-grandchildren.

Carol is also survived by siblings: Nedra Sorensen, Charles (Glenna) Riddle, Tom (Sherrie) Day, Leon (Lorele) Day, Keith (Cindy) Day, and Nanette (Donald) Watson, as well as many very loved nieces, nephews, great-nieces, and great-nephews, and cousins.

Jean Bushman Johnson 1/2/1935 –­1/6/2022

Jean Bushman Johnson passed away at home peacefully on January 6, 2022. She was born January 2, 1935, in Fairview, Utah to Jacob Denzil and Emily Billings Bushman and was raised in Fairview. She attended North Sanpete High School. While a senior in high school, she met Glen Johnson and they were married shortly after her graduation on June 19, 1953, in the Manti Temple.

They lived on the ranch outside of Mt. Pleasant for some years, then moved into town making it easier for the kids to get to school, eventually moving back to the ranch. After Glen passed away, Jean moved to Fairview where she spent her remaining years.

Jean enjoyed raising her four children; Victor, Daphene, Deniece and Doreen, as well as taking in several Navajo children for various time periods during the LDS Church’s Indian Student Placement Program.

Jean loved cooking and was especially known for “Jean’s Donuts” and Christmas candy. She taught many 4-H cooking classes during the summer. As her children got a little older she worked in food service for Wasatch Academy, North Sanpete School District and at Terrell’s grocery store.

Jean enjoyed having her grandchildren come and spend a week with her in the summer and kept them busy with swimming, crafts, movies and playing games together.

Jean was an active member of The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints and especially enjoyed callings with the children and youth. Sunbeams and Young Women’s Camp leader were some of her favorites, even going so far as to have special solar ovens made so she

could teach the girls to cook in them at girls camp. After retirement, Jean and Glen were able to enjoy several years as ordinance workers at the Manti temple.

Some of her favorite times were serving and meeting the wonderful people they worked with there.

She is survived by her children Victor Lee (Laurie) Johnson, Herriman; Daphene (Tim) Hansen, Fairview; Deniece (Owen) Larsen, Kaysville; Doreen (Steve) Petersen, Sandy; her sister Donna Thorpe, Salt Lake City; brothers Lynn Merth (Camille) Holladay; and Therald Duane, Millcreek.

Jean had four children, 23 grandchildren, numerous great-grandchildren and one great-great-grandchild.

Preceded in death by her husband Glen; her parents Jacob Denzil and Emily Bushman; sisters Erma Shelley and Carma Humphries; brother Boyd Bushman.

Services will be held Saturday, January 15, 2022, at 1:00 p.m. in the Fairview North Ward Chapel (131 East 100 North, Fairview, Utah).

Sunland, California Aaron LaMar Hamilton, age 91, died of natural causes on December 17, 2021, surrounded by his son David’s family at LaMar’s home in Sunland, California. LaMar was born March 7, 1930, in Washington, Utah; son to Alvin Hamilton and Elva (Sproul) Hamilton.

LaMar graduated from North Sanpete High School, class of 1948. At age 18, LaMar helped his father build a red brick home in Fairview Canyon. After graduation, LaMar worked at Zions National Park and afterward, he attended Snow College. Then LaMar served a mission for The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints in Germany. Afterward, LaMar joined the US Army and worked in Counter Intelligence Corps.

While stationed back east, he met Ursuline Sherbs; and they were married three weeks later on December 31, 1954, in Baltimore, Maryland. A year later their first son Alan was born. Then LaMar and Ursuline moved to Los Angeles, California, and had four more children.

LaMar graduated from the University of California with a bachelor’s degree in business. LaMar worked for State Farm Insurance Company in Sunland-Tujunga, California, as an insurance agent throughout his career,

and retired at age 65. At age 50, LaMar and Ursuline divorced. Lamar met Dan Nelson in 1980 and they became companions and remained forever friends up to Lamarás passing. Lamar also was a companion to Cristian Gold for a few years who has remained a steadfast friend to Lamar to the end as well.

LaMar would like to be known for his integrity and honesty. He taught his children the value of hard work, careful money management and frugal living.

In addition to his parents, LaMar was predeceased by his ex-wife Ursuline (Sherbs) Hamilton of Fountain Green, Utah; and youngest daughter, Marla Hamilton, of Payson, Utah.

Brothers that have passed on include Rowland, Darwin, Myron and Tony Hamilton.

Predeceased sister-in-laws include Nadine (Samples) Hamilton, Evelyn (Jensen) Hamilton, Barbara (Madsen) Hamilton, and Joan (Croweher Nielsen) Hamilton. Erika Renee Shinkle Payne February 10, 1977 ~ January 2, 2022

Our beloved Erika passed back to her loving Heavenly Father after bravely enduring a long illness. She leaves behind her husband, Cedric, parents Celeste and Terry Curtis, two brothers, Aaron Shinkle and Shane Johnson, along with many other family and friends.

She is preceded in death by father, Gary Shinkle, whom she adored.

Erika was born in Murray, Utah and at age ten moved to Boise, Idaho.

There she finished school graduating from Capital High School. She loved her independence working several places including Idaho Pizza Factory, and Mr. Frog’s Preschool and Day Care.

Erika loved little children and was always happy when around them.

She loved music and met her husband, Cedric, while he worked as a Dee Jay for a local radio station.

They later lived near Hill Air Force Base in Layton, Utah. Erika waited faithfully while he completed his final tour in Afghanistan. Sometime later they moved

Franklin Max Llewellyn 1935 – 2022

Franklin Max Llewellyn, died January 2, 2022, at the age of 86, at Covington Senior Living in Orem, Utah. Franklin was born to David Elmo Llewellyn and Phyllis Allred Llewellyn on August 15, 1935, in Mt. Pleasant, Utah. He was the oldest of five children, having four sisters: Jacqueline, Nancy, Virginia and Laura.

Frank’s family moved to Los Angeles during his elementary years. His high school years were divided between North Sanpete High in Utah and North Hollywood High in California. It was at North Sanpete High School that he met Barbara Clark. They were married in 1954 and their first home was an apartment in Sun Valley, California. In 1957 they purchased their first home in Sunland, California.

Most of his career was spent at Heath & Company; first as an electrical sign installer and then as the operations manager.

Later he also worked as an operations manager at Young Electric Sign Company and Image National.

He retired in 2002 and moved to Spring City, Utah.

Heber Light & Power, Smart Energy Innovation Award. This award recognizes member utilities for undertaking progressive smart city initiatives to improve service to customers. In 2021, HL&P began an initiative to promote EV ownership in the Heber Valley. The initiative includes an EV charging rebate, allowing the company to gather EV charging data and stay ahead of this potential growth.

HL&P has also building EV charging infrastructure in the community. To unveil the new infrastructure, the company partnered with Utah Clean Cities for a public event to help citizens understand the benefits of EV ownership.

This award recognizes member utilities for undertaking system upgrades, capital improvements and preventive maintenance measures to modernize facilities, improve system reliability, reduce losses, reduce outage times or improve power quality. Presentations and speeches at the Member Meeting focused on UAMPS 2021 accomplishments; the challenges facing public power, including the need to de-carbonize electrical production; and continued development of the Carbon Free Power Project utilizing small modular nuclear reactors.

2021 UAMPS officers were elected to include Les Williams, representing Beaver City, board chair; Rick Hansen, representing Washington City, board vice chair; Shane Ward, representing Mt. Pleasant, board secretary; and Dwight Day, representing Oak City, as board treasurer.

Ask an Expert – Cleaning tips to keep you healthy

We all know it is important to clean and disinfect to reduce the risk of getting sick, but with many illnesses circulating, including the common cold, flu, RSV, handfoot-mouth disease, and the COVID virus, now is an important time to reevaluate hygiene habits. How often do you clean and disinfect items that are used daily? Can you reinfect yourself with items such as a toothbrush or reusable water bottle? Consider this information.

Toothbrushes – According to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC), we now know the risk of catching COVID after touching a contaminated surface, such as a door handle, is low. But what about personal items like a toothbrush – is there a risk for reinfection?

Although it’s commonly recommended to replace your toothbrush after an illness due to the chance of becoming re-infected, professionals agree this isn’t typically true for viruses. After your body has fought off a virus, such as the flu or COVID, in most cases your immune system will have developed the necessary protection to prevent reinfection of that particular virus.

With that being said, it is possible to infect others

if the contaminated toothbrush comes into contact with another brush. Additionally, a toothbrush can be the cause of reinfection of a bacterial illness, such as strep throat. Since bacteria will die in the presence of oxygen, bacteria on a toothbrush that properly air dries between each use generally is not an issue for reinfection.

However, bacteria can colonize if the bristles do not dry completely, which is why some professionals agree it is best practice to replace a brush after a bacterial illness. The CDC recommends against using dishwashers, microwaves, or other means to disinfect toothbrushes, as these methods may damage the brush.

Water bottles – How do you avoid reinfection from a commonly used item that travels back and forth with most people? According to Michigan State University Extension, you should wash the bottle in hot water with a teaspoon of unscented dish soap each day to reduce the risk of illness from bacterial growth. Soak the bottle in soapy water for a few minutes, rinse it well using warm water, and allow it to completely dry before the next use.

Alternatively, you can clean and sanitize bottles in the dishwasher if they are dishwasher safe. Avoid letting your water bottle sit with water left

Genesis adds a new sedan to lineup with the 2022 G70

A

fter having a week with what is arguably the best-looking Genesis sedan to date, we were in complete agreement that this is going to be a great addition to the stable for the young automaker.

We found it very fun to drive and completely engaging CRAIG & DEANNE at a price CONOVER point that was not expected in a luxury sedan.

Genesis now has a total of seven models in its lineup: three sedans, three SUVs and a new electrified G80 sedan.

Over the past six months, we have had the opportunity to get into two of the SUVs and now two of the sedan models as well.

Our last experience was in the G80 sedan back in July.

It came equipped with the smaller of the offered engines, a 2.5-liter turbo that makes 300 horsepower in the larger sedan. This time out, the G70 that arrived at our home came with the larger of the two options: a 3.3-liter V-6 turbocharged carryover engine from the last G70 that made up to 373 horsepower in sport mode.

Of the two different experiences, we would have to vote for the more powerful V-6 engine even though we got almost 3 miles per gallon more on the smaller engine in the larger vehicle. The added horsepower gave the Genesis an entirely new dimension.

Luxury is a thing many more people are looking for in their everyday driving lives.

However, we have found that when it is combined with a sportier mix, it makes for an even more enjoyable encounter with the vehicle, especially when it comes in the form of a sedan, as the G70 proves.

Just having the extra horsepower under the hood gives the driver more confidence, even if they never really use all the potential that is included.

After a week with the G70, we really did not want to give it up, as we looked forward to driving it while performing simple daily tasks like going to the grocery store.

State agencies create committee to study electric vehicle charging SALT LAKE CITY — The Utah Office of Energy Development, in partnership with the Utah Department of Transportation, created a steering committee to work through topics and strategies related to the implementation of the Statewide Electric Vehicle Charging Network Plan.

The Electric Vehicle Service Equipment Steering Committee, conceived under section 5.1 of the plan, met for the first time today and includes fifteen people from public and private organizations throughout the state.

One of their primary goals is to alleviate range anxiety that may come with ownership of an electric vehicle.

“Electric vehicle infrastructure is critical to our transportation future,” said Carlos Bracesas, executive director of UDOT. “This steering committee will help us implement an electric vehicle charging network to support the increasing use of electric vehicles statewide.”

Additionally, the committee will update the plan with the latest trends and innovations as EVs are more widely adopted.

“With the vast amounts of private and public investment focused on EVs and EV infrastructure, we are excited to get this committee together to focus on the best ways to serve the people of the state,” said Thom Carter, energy advisor to the governor and executive director of OED. “As we focus on policy, trends, research, and partnerships, we want to ensure Utah is in a position to lead in the evolution of our energy and transportation sectors.”

The committee is expected to meet quarterly.
