DANCE SHOWCASE
FROM THE HEAD OF DANCE The role of Head of Dance at Pymble Ladies’ College is one that encompasses all aspects of the Dance program from Kindergarten to Year 12. Balancing this multifaceted world of dance requires a huge team who are ready to face challenges that extend beyond merely upholding an outstanding program in the present; but also involves the forwardlooking task of planning and establishing an environment conducive to the growth of our students and staff. We consistently ensure we are making a thoughtful examination of the world that surrounds us, seeking opportunities to utilise dance as a vehicle for exploring educational concepts that extend beyond the confines of the dance studio and become an integral part of our dancers’ rich tapestry of memories and remain strong in our audience members’ minds. Maybe it was me always thinking ahead, or the excitement about our new dance centre in the near future, or how AI is changing education so fast. But one thing’s for sure; back in December last year, I had a gut feeling that ‘The Future’ would be our theme for 2023, and here we are. Welcome to the Dance Showcase Production of “The Future. It Could Be…” This production has served as an exciting platform for the contemplation of future possibilities. Collaboratively, we embarked on a comprehensive seven-month journey from conceptualisation to the realisation of our artistic vision. For the second consecutive year, we also had the privilege of collaborating with Miss Miranda Middleton, a distinguished alumna of the College and a highly acclaimed theatre director. This collective effort culminated in the creation of our distinctive narrative production. Throughout this process, we conducted a series of focus groups, immersive student workshops and extensive research to seamlessly weave the production together. Miranda skillfully scripted the narrative from the ideas derived during the process, our teachers created themes and choreography appropriate for their classes and our sound designers SoundModa and our very own Theatre Technical Coordinator, Timothy Colvin, were highly involved in composing and recording our soundtracks and voice overs. Notably, we harnessed the capabilities of advanced AI tools at various stages of our creative journey, including graphic design, costume conceptulisation and even our own robot Simba’s voiceovers. During this experience, we gained valuable insights into the role of technology in our creative process, recognising its place while reaffirming that it can never replace the unique human touch that defines our approach. I encourage the audience to find our “V” motif that is strategically placed in each routine which symbolises vision, perspective and unity.
“It Could Be…” incorporates five showcases providing a platform for hundreds of dancers to share their performances with a large audience. Our Onstage Stream classes have explored a variety of themes and future possibilities, from interstellar travel to climate change to a universal language, and our Eisteddfod Team embarked on an entirely new structure of school-based groups for Semester 2 to devise an artistic work that followed the theme of robots versus humans. Our Ballet Stream production excerpt and eisteddfod routines are also being performed to celebrate their year of success. Ultimately, this production will be one to remember. I extend my heartfelt gratitude to the Dance Staff, production team and the key 2023 Co-curricular Dance staff team, comprised of Mrs Samantha Hibburt, Miss Genevieve Gardiner, Mrs Keya Pettigrew, and Mrs Alysha Marsden, for their unwavering commitment to the dance program. At the core of our endeavour lies our exceptional dancers, and I wish to express immense appreciation to our Dance captains, Claire Spring and Georgia Shaw, as well as our Ballet captain, Ashleigh Henderson, for their exceptional representation of our co-curricular dancers. Their contributions behind the scenes have been nothing short of monumental. On behalf of the dance family, I would also like to recognise Mr Timothy ‘Tobes’ Colvin, our Theatre Technical Co-ordinator, as he departs the College with Dance Showcase being his final production. Tobes has been a huge asset to our productions and is well respected by all Dance students. We wish him all the best. Enjoy Dance Showcase 2023 and let’s see what the future may hold. Most Improved (Trophy) The Most Improved Award will be given to a student in each Eisteddfod group who has demonstrated significant improvement in their technique and performance quality for that style and level. Dancers Dancer (Secondary only) The Dancers Dancer Award will be given to a student in each Eisteddfod group who has been nominated by their peers as an exceptional team member. Current Co-curricular Dance Captains are not eligible. School Dancer Awards (Trophy) The School Dancer Awards are for the 2023 Semester 2 showcase season and will be awarded to a student who has demonstrated significant growth, enthusiasm and promise. • Middle School Jazz / Contemporary Dancer • Upper School Jazz / Contemporary Dancer • Senior School Jazz / Contemporary Dancer.
VET IN DANCE AWARDS Certificate II and Certificate III in Dance (Certificate) All students who have completed their Certificate II and III in Dance course will be awarded the Nationally Recognised Qualification from EMPOWER DANCE. Certificate II and Certificate III in Assistant Dance Teaching with Excellence (Certificate and Award) Students who submitted coursework demonstrating academic rigour and outstanding dance knowledge and practice may be considered for the Pymble ‘with Excellence’ Award.
MAJOR AWARDS The Magic Moment Award (Jewellery) The Magic Moment Award is given to a student in the Secondary School who produces moment/s of excellence and improvement during the year both on and off stage. This is for a student who is noticed by Dance Staff to have hit a new significant peak in their dancing. Raise the Bar Award (Jewellery) The Raise the Bar Award recognises the student’s progressive achievements, resilience, and unwavering commitment, encouraging them to persist in their journey of pushing boundaries, fostering personal growth, and inspiring others to follow suit. Outstanding Participation (Trophy) The Outstanding Participation award is to acknowledge the contribution students have made to Pymble Dance. To qualify for this award a student’s participation in Co-curricular Dance during their years at Pymble from Year 7 onwards is tallied via a point system gaining points per class that they have participated in. A student must be in Year 12 to be considered for this award and meet the minimum number of points. Performer of the Year Awards (Shield, trophy and $150 voucher) Performers of the Year are students who have displayed outstanding technique in their style, have performed exceptionally and have demonstrated improvement, dedication, and spirit. The criteria for the Performer of the Year includes 10 different categories including: Technique, Musicality, Performance Quality, Endurance, Improvement, In Class Performance consistency, Onstage Performance consistency, Choreography Retention, Attendance and Attitude. Artistry in Dance (Trophy) This award is given to a student who has demonstrated significant dance artistry across both HSC Dance and Eisteddfod Dance. The student achieves excellence in choreography and performance as an individual and in a team.
