Limelight is an Esplanade Presents series specially started in 2007 to give some of the best school choirs and symphonic bands in Singapore an opportunity to perform at the Esplanade Concert Hall Through this series, Esplanade hopes to inspire excellence in performance among schools by offering them another platformtoshowcasetheirmusicalabilitiestothepublic
Since its inception in the 1990s, Peirce Wind Symphony (PWS) has been home to many students with a common appreciation for music and enthusiasm for making music together. Guided by a vision that eloquently expresses the ethos, the Brass, Woodwind, and Percussion sections of PWS epitomize a collective spirit— divided in sections, united in harmony PWS actively engages in diverse exchange programs with local and international schools, as well as notable events like the Singapore Youth Festival Arts Presentation (SYF AP) and the Singapore InternationalBandFestival(SIBF)
Steering the group towards excellence are the accomplished Resident Conductor, Mr Joseph Teo, and Assistant Conductor, Mr Don Kow Since assuming their roles in 2018, the duo has tirelessly guided PWS in presenting works of escalating sophistication and depth. The batons of Mr Teo and Mr Kow have orchestrated numerouscompellingperformances,showcasingthegroup'sartisticprowess.
Looking ahead, Peirce Wind Symphony eagerly anticipates a future filled with jubilant musical expressions under the continued guidance of Mr Teo and Mr Kow, astheyleadtheensembletonewheightsofmusicalbrilliance
Joseph Teo is a promising young conductor who has made a significant impact on wind band music and education in Singapore. With exceptional talent and unwavering dedication, Joseph has inspired musicians and audiences throughouthiscareer
Beginning his musical journey at a young age, Joseph's passion led him to join the renowned Singapore Armed Forces Central Band as a military musician. He showcased his exceptional skills as the Section Leader and Principal Euphonium while also serving as the Events Manager for the Armed Forces Bands Joseph's musical prowess and organizational acumen werewidelyrecognized
To further refine his craft, Joseph pursued postgraduate studies at Japan's esteemed Kunitachi College of Music. Under the guidance of Professor Toru Miura, a member of the renowned Tokyo Kosei Wind Orchestra, Joseph's artistry flourished, earning him a Licentiate Diploma in Euphonium from Trinity College London. He also held the prestigious position of PrincipalEuphoniumforthePhilharmonicWinds.
Seeking continuous growth, Joseph attended masterclasses with internationally acclaimed maestros and musicians, enhancing his musicality and conducting skills Today, he serves as a dynamic Band Director for Novo Winds, Bendemeer Secondary School, Peirce Secondary School, and Maris Stella High School (Primary). Additionally, he is the Assistant ConductorfortheMarisStellaSymphonicBand
Joseph's teaching philosophy focuses on empowering students to excel in both technical proficiency and emotional expression. His student-centered approach has led his bands to achieve stellar results and recognition for their exceptional musicianship He constantly challenges the conventional wind band concert format by conceptualizing and staging unique and captivating performances that push the boundariesofthegenre.
Beyond his teaching and conducting roles, Joseph contributes to the development of music education in Singapore He served as a Committee member of the Band Directors' Association, holding positions as Treasurer and PublicityandMarketingOfficer
Currently pursuing a Masters in Music Leadership at Yong Siew Toh Conservatory of Music, National University of Singapore, Joseph is committed to shaping the future of wind band music With innovative teaching methods, effective leadership, and unwavering dedication, he aims to create a musical landscape that embracescreativity,challengesconventions,and nurtures the artistic potential of every aspiring musicianheencounters.
Don Kow holds an Artist's Certificate in Trombone Performance from the Royal Conservatory of The Hague, a Master of Music from the Codarts University of the Arts and a Bachelor of Music (Honours)fromtheYongSiewTohConservatoryofMusic
His principal teachers include Alexander Verbeek, Brandt Attema, Fredi Sonderegger, Sebastiaan Kemner, Shannon Pittaway, Timothy Dowling and Zachary Bond In addition, he has also performedinmasterclasseswithJorgenvanRijen,IanBousfieldandJosephAlessi
With vast experience in chamber and orchestral playing, Don is versatile in diverse styles He has performed on period instruments alongside the Orchestra of the 18th Century and Red Dot Baroque. Don has also performed a trombone solo role in the Dutch National Opera's production of Karlheinz Stockhausen's opera cycle 'Licht' for the Holland Festival Don has also received scholarships to attend the Animato Foundation Orchestra Academy and the Domaine Forget MusicandDanceAcademy
Back home, Don plays Principal Trombone regularly with the Metropolitan Festival Orchestra and the Orchestra of the Music Makers He has also been invited to perform with orchestras in the region such as the South Asian Symphony Orchestra, the Phnom Penh Symphony Orchestra and theBandungPhilharmonicOrchestra.
