Boston Studio

Welcome to our new Boston Studio — Here in the home of the American Revolution, we’re proud of our rebel roots. We hold fast to our values—diversity, collaboration, and innovation—and we’re only halfjoking when we tell people to run until apprehended, because we see our studio less like an office and more like a test lab. Ingenuity is embedded in the fabric of our practice, blurring traditional boundaries between disciplines. We take advantage of our city’s world-class academic institutions, actively seeking new perspectives for a fresh, dynamic atmosphere.

Location Where We Are ― Our Studio is located on the 7th floor of 225 Franklin, a 1960’s Brutalist style tower in the heart of Boston’s Financial District. Views to Post Office Square and the Boston Harbor present themselves through the surrounding skyline.

Much like a museum with an artist in residence, the design of the space puts invention on display. This idea informed and sparked the creation of our entry gallery — a space for rotating installations that represent the physicality of the studio work product including models, drawings, refined artifacts, and digital projection.

Living Design —

A Breath of Fresh Air Wood millwork and floors naturally store carbon that would otherwise be emitted back into the atmosphere. 9

Reuse & Reclaim 62% of furniture is reclaimed from our previous space and newly acquired furniture is BIFMA certified.

↑ Work Café The Café provides a variety of seating and fully integrated IT/AV, accommodating collaboration, social gatherings, and all-staff in-person and virtual meetings.

← Flexible Conference Adjacent to the Work Café, a conference room provides spatial flexibility through an operable wall that allows for a variety of engaging layouts for collaboration, peer reviews, and training. 11

Workspace

12

Open Office ― Areas of small collaboration are embedded in each neighborhood of desks, these touch-down spaces provide space for informal chats and impromptu meetings. The open workspace area follows an unassigned seating system that creates an agile work environment and allows for maximum flexibility between studios.

13

Living Design —

Designed for Us 65% of our walls are designed to display project work, including pin-up walls made from regenerative cork, writable glass, and our gallery peg wall.

↑ Team Areas Open collaboration spaces adjacent to the work areas support impromptu meetings, mentoring, and sharing. Virtually every surface has pin-up capabilities, allowing for a rotating display of process and products emerging from the work of our designers and researchers.

14

Thoughtful Connections ― With adaptability, agility, and a sensitivity to neurodiversity, our studio amplifies attentive engagement efforts from areas of focused invention to client interaction and communal events.

15

← New Strides in Technology The White Box is an innovative space for continual transformation and experimentation. This transitional huddle and protected VR space features rounded interior corners and an unstrut ceiling system poised for future applications of immersive technology and projection. 16

← Innovation on Display Our model shop contains upgraded technology. With advances in AR/VR capabilities, we are elevating the experience of engaging with our space and work through new technology and hands-on tactile materials.

↓ Modular Materiality Located at the intersection between different workplace areas, the materials library allows for serendipitous engagement. It features an impromptu collaboration space for brainstorming and storyboarding, and a lay-down materials area with a variety of test temperature lighting.

Desks are perpendicular to floor-toceiling windows to allow daylight deep into the floorplate, reduce glare, and target our lighting power density 34% below baseline. Respite areas including a lactation room, wellness room, and gender inclusive restroom support inclusivity in the work environment. All wet spaces are outfitted with low-flow fixtures that contribute to a 30% water usage reduction. And, with a focus on material health, 76% of the finish products in our new studio contribute to LEED certification.
