Basketball Leads Winter Sports

• The Palos Verdes Youth Basketball League held Opening Day ceremonies last week at the Peninsula High gym.

Two separate ceremonies were conducted with awards, sweepstakes and a performance from the Peninsula High cheers squad.

More than 1,500 players will compete during the 2022-23 season. Games will be played at all four indoor gyms on the Peninsula including many contests held on outdoor school courts.

The Peninsula High cheer squad helped introduce the teams and put on a great performance to open the ceremonies. And There’s More On The Way . . . The PVYBL held two Opening Day ceremonies to accommodate all the teams and their fans.

Soccer Finds Its Royal Champions

• AYSO Region 10 Palos Verdes completed its fall season with the annual King and Queen of the Hill soccer tournament held all day at Ladera Linda Park last week.

The girls’ 9U Lavender Lightning and boys’ 12U Gladbach were the only teams to finish the regular season and playoffs without a loss to be Queens and Kings of the Hill.

The biggest surprise of the day was the 6-3-1 Blue Belugas defeating the previous undefeated Purple Starfish to win the girls’ 12U Queen of the Hill title.

The Lady Bugs and Lavender Legends battled deep into overtime before the Lady Bugs pulled away to claim the girls’ 14U Queen of the Hill title.

The girls’ 9U Lavender Lightning dominated the regular season scoring 49 goals while allowing a Region low four goals total. The boys’ 12U Gladbach lead the Region with 53 goals scored total.
