Summer Debate Camp Brings On Arguments

Each summer, student debaters gather at Marymount California University residences for The Debate Intensive which has specifically structured sessions for debaters of all levels in order to make them the best debaters they can be.

Sessions range from two to five weeks in length a camp that gives participants the option of staying overnight.

Campers spend every day, except Sundays, working in debate-related activities. Most of the time students are working on labs, in which they work on exercises according to their experience level. At other times students participate in practice debates as well as attending lectures. There is also time for one-on-one mentoring sessions.

Local Students Study, Practice Protocols New Routines • The "Green Screen" opens school doors and marks the beginning of the new school year.

By Keila Bara With the 2021-22 school year in high gear, campuses across the Palos Verdes Peninsula are bustling with students.

After the past year and four months of remote learning, the return to inperson learning has created a sense of normalcy, with the school year appearing to be fairly typical. Of course, it would be irresponsible to completely return to a normal year, as the coronavirus (COVID-19) is still prevalent with thousands of new cases every day.

Because of COVID-19’s lasting presence, schools have implemented protocols in an attempt to keep students safe during the transition back to campus. Though significant efforts are being made, there is still a pressing worry about how dangerous it is to be back in person in close contact with so many other people, and the question remains: Are the safety protocols currently in place are enough?

At Peninsula High School, many ac-

tions are being taken in an attempt to contain the spread of COVID-19.

Upon entering campus, students must show a “green screen” to faculty at the gate, confirming they are symptom-free. In each class, teachers must create seating charts and strictly en-

— Keila Bara force them in order to monitor who is in close contact with each other in the classroom. This way, if a student contracts COVID-19, the students in the immediate vicinity of the one that tested positive can be notified and tested immediately.

Though this is a good start, it does not take into account all the encounters made in the halls, because there are no rules outside of the classroom that prevent students from intermingling.

The halls get incredibly crowded during passing periods, and all the students rushing to their next class come into close contact with each other.

If one of those students tests positive, those who may have been near

Of course, there is only so much faculty can do to keep students’ masks on at all times, and it is quite common to see a student fashioning an “under-thenose” mask look. Masks must be worn over the nose and mouth, so keeping the nose exposed is counterproductive.

“Some of my teachers are good

about enforcing masks in the classroom, but of course there are exceptions,” PVPHS senior Maya Ashai said.

“I have noticed teachers constantly reminding students to have their masks on over the nose when they notice a student is wearing their mask incorrectly, and I am glad those students are being called out.”

The Zoo, which is Peninsula’s student section at sporting events, is also a cause for concern regarding the possible spread of COVID-19. Though masks are mandatory in the stands as well as in classrooms, students tend to forget this rule.

Many put their mask under their nose throughout the game, wear their masks on their chin or have no mask at all. This is a cause for concern because of how tightly packed the stands can get, with everyone practically breathing down each others’ necks.

Most students who wear masks and follow the rules, but there are few authority figures present to enforce the mask-wearing rule during games, allowing for many to take their masks off as they please.

College Debate Camp Gets Intensive For Summer

The camp revolves around four intensives: investigations of government policy, ethical philosophy, theory of argumentation and critical theory.

Camp co-director is Scott Wheeler, who is also director of the Peninsula High School speech and debate program. Said Wheeler, “The ‘intensive’ name isn’t coincidental but the core philosophy of the camp.”

The other co-director is David Dosch, the director of debate at Immaculate Heart High School in Los

Angeles. The director of student life is Aleisha Readye, the director of debate at Dougherty High School in San Ramon.

Students have Sundays off from debate activities. On Saturday nights, students participate in a fun campwide activity completed as a group. The camp boasts its instructors and their attention to each student.

Srivatsav Pyda, a camp participant in 2016, stated on The Debate Intensive’s website, “I can guarantee you your other [camp] options won’t have the same caliber of instructor quality, as much one on one attention, and definitely won’t have such a studentdriven curriculum.”

Back On Campus Means Sticking To The Rules . . . Continued from Page 7 not allowed to play in the game last Friday, I saw many of them in the stands anyway,” Peninsula senior Talani Anetema said. “The games are definitely a cause for concern, and students need to be more conscious of COVID-19, ensuring they are not risking its spread by attending.”

Of course, the increasing number of vaccinated students is somewhat comforting, although the school district does not require students to be vaccinated. Because a substantial number of students have been vaccinated, more on-campus events are taking place.

However, there are many students who are not vaccinated. Though the exact numbers are unknown, it is fair to assume the division between vaccinated and unvaccinated students on the Peninsula campus is fairly even.

If a student is exposed to COVID-19 and is vaccinated, he or she is required to be tested but do not have to be quarantined if the test results are negative. However, if a student is exposed and unvaccinated, they must be quarantined for 10 days at home, regardless of their test results.

“I am glad they are being attentive of potential exposures on campus,”

Peninsula senior Gianna Rosato said.

“It is good that vaccinated students still have to get tested if there is even a chance they were exposed; that makes me feel safer that the school is being thorough about checking for cases.”

With a month of the school year passed, it is still unclear as to how the remainder of the year will play out. The year, surprisingly, appears to be fairly normal, with pep rallies, games and classes all running just as they did before the pandemic began.

It seems that it is only a matter of time before there is some sort of outbreak on campus that pushes everyone back online, but many are attempting to remain optimistic about the year proceeding as it is now.

Everyone’s safety is the number one priority, and as long as people wear their masks properly and continue to get vaccinated, there is hope of a seminormal year ahead. If people continue to downplay COVID-19’s severity and the constant risk of being on campus at all, though, refusing to follow the guidelines in place for safety reasons, it is only a matter of time before being back in-person produces severe consequences.

PV Mavericks Open Football Flag Football

• Palos Verdes Football & Cheer began the Pop Warner football season with home games at Peninsula and Palos Verdes high schools.

There are 17 teams under four divisions with players ages 6-years to 14.

Gophers Are Kings Of All Peninsula Fields

• Almost all local fields and parks have extensive damage from the small, burrowing rodents.

When COVID-19 hit, and with it restrictions on outdoor activities, I thought one of the bright spots would be that the worn-out and torn-up fields would have a chance to recover and grow a strong foundation of turf before the return of play.

The exact opposite happened. Without the constant activity of cleats and balls on the fields, and with the stoppage of general field and park maintenance, almost all of the Peninsula’s athletic fields and parks have extensive gopher damage.

It’s going to take more than a few seasons for the fields to recover. Hopefully, we can keep the games going and our city leaders can quickly identify and begin repairs. The damage is extensive.

The tranquil grounds at PANORAMA headquarters have also been damaged by the small furry beasts.
