PV Assembly Celebrates With Annual Spring Tea And Awards Service

The Palos Verdes Assembly celebrated its annual Spring Tea to recognize recipients of the President’s Volunteer Service Award (PVSA). The award honors individuals whose service positively impacts communities and inspires those around them to make a difference.

Serving a total of 2,726 volunteer hours, this year’s PVSA recipients include: Kathryn Bryant, Michele Chan, Mia Constantino, Charles Dodge, Kaitlyn Fujiki, Aaron Hebert, Rylan Johnson, Trista Kemp, Malia Kure, Evan Lahr, Janna Lee, Katherine Lewis, Clarence Lin, Mark Lin, Elise Massey, Christa McKnight, Erin Murdoch, Sofia Neumann, Delaney O’Connor, Elayna Pope, Sarah Porter, Sai Portugal, Petra Riggs, Ella Russo, Roberto

Sebenick, Mason Shu, Charlotte Smalley, Gavin Steen-Olsen and Grant Walther.

The Palos Verdes Assembly is a nonprofit social and philanthropic organization that was founded in 1964 by the late Mrs. Katherine Sheehy. Her vision for the young people combined teaching the importance of elegance, grace and manners, while imparting a humanitarian spirit of service to the community. She established a standard of excellence that is still the essence of the organization some 50 years later.

Membership in Assembly is a fouryear commitment preceded by three years of participation in middle school cotillion.

Assembly activities include a formal tea, six dances in which members are instructed in various ballroom dances and

etiquette, a semi-formal holiday dinner dance, and the Presentation Ball at the iconic Millennium Biltmore Hotel in Los Angeles.

Bobby Burgess and his staff provide dance instruction to the members and Carol Thomas instructs members in social protocol and etiquette.

In addition to their social activities, Assembly members in all four grades contribute thousands of hours of volunteer service each year to programs that benefit our local community.

The "Palos Verdes Open" Arrives On The Peninsula Golf • Professoinal golf comes to the Peninsula this weekend.

By Timothy Niemann For the first time, the Ladies Professional Golf Association (LPGA) Tour has come to the Palos Verdes Golf Club. The Peninsula course is hosting its inaugural LPGA Tour tournament, the Palos Verdes Championship, from April 28 to May 1. It’s a high-stakes tournament, as the rewards purse amounts to $1.5 million.

Palos Verdes Golf Club is not a new player in the world of Southern California golf. The course opened in 1924 and has hosted many events, but nothing as important as the Palos Verdes Championship.

The PV Golf Club is the annual host

of the Northrop Grumman Regional Challenge, and an annual women’s college golf tournament that attracts universities from around the country.

Main parking for the Palos Verdes Championship is being held at Ernie Howlett Park, with shuttles driving patrons to and from the course all day.

The event is being televised on the Golf Channel each evening throughout the tournament.

As is typical for the LPGA Tour, tournament competition is stiff. The current number one female player in the world, South Korean Jin Young Ko, is competing along with 8 of the top 10 players in the world in a field of 144 champion female golfers.

The Palos Verdes Championship comes a week after the L.A. Open, hosted by Wilshire Country Club. Japan’s Nasa Hataoka took home the trophy

last week, winning by five strokes. She did not choose to compete in the Palos Verdes Championship.

Southern California residents should get used to hosting notable professional golf tournaments. Beyond the annual events in Los Angeles for the PGA Tour and LPGA Tour, the Los Angeles Country Club will host the U.S. Open in 2023, and The Riviera Country Club will host the U.S. Women’s Open in 2026. The Los Angeles area continues to increasingly become a Mecca for the golf world.

The Palos Verdes Championship marks a new and exciting era for the Peninsula’s golf community, as some of the best female golfers in the world bring Palos Verdes Golf Club to the forefront of the female golfing world for the first time.

Miss Your Rubber Bat? Publisher’s Note (crazy talk)

• There was a time on the Peninsula when it seemed every kid hit at least one home run in their baseball career.

When RHLL big hitter Garren Rizzo turned to bunt during the first of two Palos Verdes vs. Peninsula varsity baseball games Tuesday, it was not a surprise. A number of players from both squads turned to bunt or threaten to bunt - something they didn’t do much during Little League.

Back then everyone played with bats that almost guaranteed a home

run when the wind was blowing out.

And it blows out at every field on the Hill except Lunada Bay Little League.

You really got to muscle it up on that field to hit one out - no matter what bat you use.

High school rivalry note: We don’t root for either school when it comes to the rivalry. For all the obvious reasons we won’t get into it here, the only schools in the South Bay we care about defeating are Mira Costa and West.

So when it’s Tommy vs. Kendall, the only thing the old Panorama cameraman roots for is a good picture.

And that the passage of time would slow down just a bit.

Varsity Baseball • The Palos Verdes High varsity baseball team broke open a scoreless tie with a late-inning rally for a 3-0 rivalry win.

Palos Verdes High junior and Silver Spur Little League All-Star Kendall Ward hit a three-run double scoring seniors Ken Knapp and Ryan Roche and junior Alex Forman.

This was the first of two games with the second played Thursday at Peninsula.

No Suprise Here . . . Palos Verdes High junior Kendall Ward hits a threerun double to break a 0-0 tie in the bottom of the sixth inning and lead the Sea Kings’ 3-0 win over Peninsula.

PV Lacrosse Takes Care Of Panthers Varsity Lacrosse

• Palos Verdes High varsity boys’ and girls lacrosse teams defeated Peninsula High and are looking forward to long CIF playoff runs.

The Sea Kings boys’ team defeated Peninsula and then Redondo Union to close out the Bay League season as undefeated champions.

They play St. Margaret’s (18-1) to finish the regular season before beginning CIF playoff action.

The Panthers boys’ team finished the season with a 12-5 overall record.

The Palos Verdes girls’ team bookend its 18-6 win over the Panthers with it’s only two losses - a nonleague loss to Foothill and then a Bay League loss to Redondo Union.

The Sea Kings came back Thursday night to easily defeat Mira Costa, 16-6, to win the Bay League championship and finish the regular season 5-1 in league play and 18-2 overall.

Next up is an expected long run in CIF playoff action.

Last Chance To Move Up Ranks Little League

• There are only about three weeks left of action before the regular season ends and a new season begins with the playoffs.

There will be no team this season that will end the year without a perfect record. The Lunada Bay Minors Brewers took 6-5 loss to the Yankees while the Palos Verdes Intermediate Dodgers find themselves in a first-place tie with the Angels at 10-1.

A number of teams have one or two losses and depending on what happens in the next few weeks, one of them might be league champion or King of the Hill.

The Peninsula home run list remains steady but is growing.

New Season Begins With Playoffs Softball • The regular season action for the Palos Verdes Peninsula Girls’ Softball League ends today at Cornerstone School.

Blackout has yet to score less than 10 runs a game, but the Green Goblins came close last week losing by one run, 11-10. Blackout will finish the regular season today against Phoenix Rising.

First place 12U Dreamkillers will finish the regular season against the second place Bombin’ Bulldogs.
