Local Traditions Slowly Returning New Seasons

• Family and community traditions are slowly making a comeback.

By Timothy Niemann A year ago during the holiday season, Los Angeles County restaurants were closed to in-person diners, schools were still completely virtual, and there was very little tourism. After that unprecedented and bewildering holiday season, families will appreciate their typical traditions a lot more this season.

Junior Panther Competes On National Level With Very Best On Campus • Peninsula High junior reaches season goals after months of hard work and training.

By Keila Bara Peninsula High School junior Aishling Callanan ran in the girls Championship Race at the West Cross Country Regionals on Dec. 4, which qualified her for the Cross Country Nationals, which took place on Dec. 11 in San Diego.

Callanan, a member of the Peninsula’s girls varsity cross country team, was one of 40 in the nation to qualify.

Her West region, consist of runners from Alaska, Arizona, California, Hawaii, Idaho, Montana, Nevada, New Mexico,

Oregon, Utah, Washington and Wyoming.The other regions are the Northeast, South and Midwest.

Taking place at Mt. San Antonio College in Walnut, Callanan ran the 5,000-meter course, which included two steep climbs, rolling hills, dirt trails and cement trails against about 150 other runners from girls’ cross country teams within the West region. She was among only 10 in the region to qualify for Nationals.

“I was super excited to find out I qualified,” Callanan said. “It was one of my goals I set at the start of the season, and I knew it would be really hard and I had to have a good race.”

Callanan has been on Peninsula’s girls varsity cross country team since her freshman year, practicing consistently and working to continue improving her race times and building endurance. The team practices six days a week, only taking Sundays off and engaging in a longer morning race every Saturday at 7:30 a.m.

During the week, the team practices after school. In what the team considers “easy days,” they run four to five miles at a slower pace, and on “hard days” they participate in workouts and run in shorter intervals at faster speeds.

Though this rigorous training schedule may seem difficult, Callanan’s passion for running continues to motivate her.

“I definitely want to run in college and have been talking to many coaches,” Callanan said. “I am just starting the process and trying to figure out what I am interested in.”

Palos Verdes High School girls’ soccer kicked off the season with a 6-0 winning streak against some formidable opponents.

The Sea Kings squared off in their opening match against San Pedro High School with a well-orchestrated performance of eight goals and a shutout.

The team set the tone for what looks to be a dominating season outclassing their opponents on both offense and defense. PV’s offense is a juggernaut outscoring all opponents with a combined goal total of 39.

Natalia Huntington, forward for the SeaKings, was awarded player of

the match against the Beverly Hills Normans with a performance that included a score and two assists. PV went on to win against the Normans, 3-1.

Sophia Kwon received the player of the game against the Sacred Heart Cardinals with two goals and two assists. The team went on to overtake the Cardinals with an amazing 19 goals scored.

Other girls giving notable performances included Michala Fairchild, Ava Yang and keeper Sophia Rodriguez. Rodriguez has only allowed two goals in over 7 games.

PV met its match against the West Torrance Warriors with a 1-2 loss. With a struggling defense, the offense was unable to find its groove until late in the game.

The girls’ soccer team is looking to bounce back against cross town rival Peninsula Panthers on Saturday at home. Game time is 11a.m.

Grateful For The Return Of Holiday Traditions . . . Continued from Page 2 ing the holiday season. Whether it be gathering at someone’s house, going to a particular restaurant, or going to mass at a particular time, these events, which at one time seemed routine, were all off the table last year.

With the decline of COVID-19 cases and the rollout of vaccines throughout the year, this holiday season will look very similar to that of years past, and very unlike the winter of last year.

Families appreciate these rituals a lot more after a year like 2020. It was easy to take certain annual routines for granted. After all, before 2020, practically nobody knew of a Thanksgiving or Christmas in which they couldn’t celebrate without restrictions. It’s now been 24 months since a normal Christmas holiday.

For many, this most recent Thanksgiving was one of the first moments of realizing that things are mostly back to normal. Family members of all ages were able to gather in the same household for a holiday centered around the family. Christmas will likely be a very similar feeling to Thanksgiving. It could

be a reminder of what life was like before the life-changing pandemic.

Tourism may be the biggest difference between this holiday season and the last. Over Thanksgiving, air travel was up about 85 percent compared to last year, according to the Transportation Security Administration. The Auto Club predicts that an astounding 109 million Americans will travel between Dec. 23 and Jan. 2. That number nearly matches the pre-pandemic record of 119 million holiday travelers in 2019.

Another one of the most drastic changes between the 2002 and 2021 holiday seasons is the fact that students are back in school. Children are learning in the presence of their friends; they will be able to celebrate the arrival of winter break together.

Separated by just one year, these two holiday seasons will be starkly different than one another. And nearly everybody will be more grateful for the rituals and traditions that they have loved for many years. Christmas and the rest of the holiday season will be normal again.

Soccer Completes Winning Season AYSO • Palos Verdes Region 10 completed its 2021 fall soccer season with the annual King & Queen of the Hill tournament last week at Ladera Linda Fields.

The all-day tournament included a number of surprise finishes, penalty kicks and an undefeated season.

The surprise finish of the day was the Sharks ((2-4-1) defeating the Sea Turtles (6-0-1) to claim the girls’ 9U Queen of the Hill crown.

The girls’ 14U Purple Reign and the boys’ 12U Stingrays won their crowns on penalty kicks. Chelsea (7-0-1) was the only team to finish the season without a loss to win the boys’ 10U Division crown.

The Chicago Fire tamed the Denver Dynamo to win the boys’ 9U King of the Hill crown. The Blue Raspberries came up big to down the Shamrock Shakes and win the girls’ 12U Queen of the Hill title.

The Blueberry Waffles got past the Lucky Charms to take the girls 10U Queen of the Hill championship.

The Stingrays scored two goals in the final minutes to get past the Jaguars and win the boys’ 14U King of the Hill title.

Basketball Tips Off New Season

• The Palos Verdes Youth Basketball League began its winter season last week with games played all over the Peninsula.

The winter youth basketball season stretches through February with final games for most divisions on Feb. 19.

The league has 10 boy divisions and six girl divisions.

That’s My Ball . . . The basketball season will take a short break for the holidays before coming back January 8 with a full slate of games.
