Fun Is Back On The Peninsula With The Annual Fall Festival

“She added, “Our goal was to bring people together in a safe environment where we can support local businesses and have a great time.”

The carnival was a blast and featured local businesses vending unique and interesting items. What caught my eye were football cards from the early 2000’s. Other

items included homemade jewelry, pottery and crystals. All of which were presented by local artisans.

The rides included a variety for all ages to enjoy. I rode the Zipper right after finishing a mountainous funnel cake. It was delicious. The live music featured artists from multiple genres, including jazz, rock, rhythm and blues, and Motown. It was great to see people dancing and enjoying the performances.

It turned out to be another magnificent event put on by the chamber. Palos Verdes High School junior Nick Finazzo said it was “a hoot” and “it made me feel like a kid again.”

The Palos Verdes Chamber of Commerce will be hosting Citizens of the Year and Solute to Business in the coming weeks.

Panthers Take Football Losses In Stride On Campus • Peninsula High students stay positive after a football loss to rival Palos Verdes High.

By Keila Bara Palos Verdes High School and Palos Verdes Peninsula High School faced off once again on the football field in the annual “rivalry game”.

Taking place Oct. 29, on the Peninsula field and beginning in the afternoon, there was a large turnout for both schools. Peninsula’s home field advantage helped students get to the game on time, while PV had a modified class schedule that day to allow for students to commute to the Peninsula campus in time for the game as well.

Though PV won by a landslide, 340, this was no surprise, as PV’s football team has defeated Peninsula every

year for the past 13 years. However, this expectation from Peninsula students to lose did not falter their spirits, as the student body showed up decked out in gold and ready to support their team.

The week leading up to the game was what the Associated Student Body (ASB) calls a “spirit week”-- each day has a different theme, and students are encouraged to dress up according to that theme.

The theme on Friday was “gold rush” in hopes of people dressing in gold attire to match the Peninsula school colors. The bleachers during the game appeared to be a sea of gold, and the vast number of students who participated in spirit day displays the strength of Peninsula’s school spirit.

In addition to the gold clothing and accessories, ASB decked out the fence in posters. One member of ASB, senior Talani Anetema, holds the po-

sition of Commissioner of Art; for this, her job is to come up with most of the ideas for the posters and delegate who has to make each one.

The posters ranged from friendly teases toward PV to encouraging messages to Peninsula players. To ensure the rivalry stayed friendly, rules were set in regards to the content of the posters.

During the annual meeting between the two schools’ ASB members, Peninsula was asked not to make any posters pertaining to math equations and any calling out specific people.

These callout signs did not tempt Anetema regardless of any rules, however, as she said that is not how PVPHS wants to be portrayed as a school.

“We hate [making targeted signs] because it is tacky and not in-line with what we stand for,” Anetema said.

“However, we do make posters that make small jabs at PV, such as ‘fishing

season’ and ‘smells fishy’ posters.

One of my favorites was the big tear banner that The Zoo tore up during the game, which read ‘dinner is served’ and had an image of a fish skeleton on the plate. Small, friendly jabs such as that are what keep the game fun.

Though there were fun posters that refer to the rivalry, the majority of the signs were positive posters of encouragement that focused on Peninsula. These are Anetema’s favorite to make, as she takes pride in her school and wants to encourage school spirit.

“My personal favorite posters to make are the ones that gas up our school and praise our Zoo,” Anetema said. “I made one that read ‘caution: animals on the loose’, and I think that is one of the best ones I have made this year.”

Service Group New “Buddies” For Challenger Players

• Challengers play flag football with their NLYM buddies

By Gray Rappoport The Palos Verdes Youth Football and Cheer program has an exceptional flag football league called Challenger Flag Football.

The league incorporates a typical league game with modified rules.

These young boys have the opportunity to play against their friends in weekly flag football games, where competition is not as important as the thrills of the game.

The Challengers get support from their “buddies,” who assist the coaches and help the players compete and enjoy their games.

This year, the “buddies” were provided by the National League of Young Men, Palos Verdes Chapter. From coaching games held at Peninsula High School to assisting the teams at Sofi Stadium, these “buddies” provide continuous support to each team member, as well as getting true enjoyment out of the experience.

As stated by Bruce Humiston, who was a point of contact for Challenger football players and their families, “We run a sports program for special needs kids to play flag football.”

Humiston said, “To help the Challenger players during the games, we pair each of them up with a volunteer

“Remarkably, the young men from League completely embraced the opportunity and not only provided the needed assistance but they made our program better. They brought a fun

youthful spirit to the games and helped the players to truly enjoy the entire experience.

“For the sake of the Challenger Players and the program, I’m hoping they can help us again next year!”

In the end, not only did the PV Challengers obtain fun and structure playing an organized sport, but the League of Young Men benefitted, too.

PV Mavericks Take Over SoFi Stadium Pop Warner • SoFi Stadium in Inglewood played host to the Pop Warner Southern California Conference Championships last week.

By Timothy Niemann Three Palos Verdes Mavericks youth football teams got the unique opportunity to play games at the brand-new SoFi Stadium in Inglewood on October 28.

The Junior Pee Wee, 12U and 14U teams played their league championship games against two teams from the Watts Rams and West Valley Rebels. The Junior Pee Wee and 12U Palos Verdes Mavericks both left SoFi victorious, while the 14U Mavericks fell to the West Valley Rebels from Lancaster.

Palos Verdes cheerleaders also had the opportunity to cheer on the field of SoFi Stadium, which hosts the National Football League’s Los Angeles Chargers and Los Angeles Rams. The stadium, which is tied for the newest in the NFL, will host Super Bowl LVI in February.

The PV Challengers got to play on the field between the 10U and 12U games.

It was the first time the championship games were been held at SoFi, being a brand new stadium.

In previous years, the championship games were played at Ventura City College. Organizers saw this as an opportunity to provide the young players with a unique and remarkable experience after their previous season was cancelled due to the pandemic.

Laura Hughes, a main event organizer, said, “We knew it would be a challenge to pull off the event at SoFi, but it was worth it to give the kids an unforgettable experience.”

The event also gave the players extra motivation throughout the season.

Hughes added, “All season, we could hear players saying, ‘Let’s go, we want

to play at SoFi.’ It became a motivator as well as an incredible experience.”

The games also gave fans from around the Los Angeles area an opportunity to see the brand new stadium firsthand. SoFi Stadium, daunting in size, can hold up to 70,000 fans. It cost $5 billion to build, first opening for the 2020 NFL season.

With a roof that does not fully enclose the stadium, the stadium maintains an outdoor feel. The roof, which is not retractable, is mostly transparent, allowing fans to see aircraft descending into LAX. All three Palos Verdes teams that played at SoFi Stadium now will compete in the Wescon Regional Playoffs, which begin Saturday, November 6, at Redondo Union High School.

PEN Zoo Keeps Spirits Up For Panthers After PV Loss

. . . Continued from Page 5 around the PVPHS student section, also referred to as The Zoo. The Zoo was fully packed, with students, faculty, parents and others eager to watch the game and participate in the excitement.

Though it can be difficult to keep the energy up when one team is losing by such a great amount, there are members of ASB stationed at the front of The Zoo throughout the entirety of the game to encourage those in the stands and keep spirits high.

These three people are called Zookeepers and are selected by ASB each year to lead chants and entertain the crowd throughout the game.

“The game was honestly really fun, especially since it was my last high school football game,” Ashai said. “The Zookeepers were constantly keeping the crowd engaged and I do not care that we lost,” — Maya Ashai This year, the three Zookeepers are seniors, Matthew Tang, Jami Galdones and Aaron Wakefield-Carl.

Wakefield-Carl is a member of the varsity football team and therefore was on the field, not in The Zoo. In his place during this particular game was senior and Peninsula Vice President Bradley Soh. They led chants such as the “zoo groove”, which is a fan favorite and staple at games both this year and in years past. That chant is also Tang’s favorite, and he is pleased with how much The Zoo participated in this game compared to past games this season.

“I felt as if The Zoo was the best it has been this year,” Tang said. “We were hype the whole time and even though we did not come out on top, The Zoo had a great time.”

The rivalry is all in good fun and makes for games with a more energetic atmosphere than other games that hold less significance. Additionally, there is not much suspense in who will win the rivalry football game each year, when basketball season rolls around, the rivalry reignites in a much more gripping way, as Peninsula’s basketball team has won three of the four boys varsity basketball games against PV in the past two years.

“Now that football season is over, basketball season is about to start,” Tang said. “I cannot wait for more exciting games with The Zoo.”
