Radium Girls is a gripping drama by D.W. Gregory, inspired by the true story of young women who worked in radium dial factories in the 1920s. As these women, including the determined Grace Fryer, Kathryn Schaub, and Irene Rudolph, paint luminous watch dials, they unknowingly expose themselves to the toxic effects of radium. When illness strikes, Grace embarks on a courageous fight for justice against the powerful U.S. Radium Corporation, challenging societal norms and corporate greed. This compelling narrative not only highlights the struggles of these brave women but also serves as a reflection on the broader implications of health, labor rights, and the commercialization of science in America.

This play is based on a true story. In 1898, Marie Curie, a Polish-born, naturalized French physicist and chemist, and her husband, Pierre, discovered radium, a mysterious element that glowed with light and promise. Fifteen years later, Dr. Sabin von Sochocky, who had studied with the Curies in Paris, created a radium-based paint for commercial use. With George Willis, he founded the Radium Luminous Materials Corporation. Their product, “Undark,” made watch dials and instruments shine in the dark and soon, the world was captivated by the magic of radium. The company later became the U.S. Radium Corporation, with Arthur Roeder as its president.
As World War I raged, hundreds of young women were hired to paint glowing numbers on soldiers’ watches. They were proud of their work. It was patriotic, artistic, and even glamorous. Their pay was generous, their smiles sparkled, and their skin shimmered. The girls glowed, literally, from the radium that splashed on their hands as they worked.
To perfect their delicate strokes, they used the “lip, dip, paint” method — shaping their brushes with their lips, dipping them in the luminous paint, and painting the dials. They repeated the motion hundreds of times a day. They were told it was safe. They believed it.
Outside the factory walls, radium fever spread—in cosmetics, toothpaste, soaps, and the famous tonic Radithor, which promised vitality and health but for these young women, the glow became a curse. One by one, they fell ill — teeth crumbling, bones breaking, their bodies slowly poisoned from within.
When the truth emerged, the company denied responsibility, but a handful of women refused to be silenced. Led by Grace Fryer, and supported by lawyer Raymond Berry and advocate Katherine Wiley, the “Radium Girls” fought back. Their courage in the courtroom changed history radium poisoning was finally recognized as a compensable disease, and their fight helped lay the foundation for modern workplace safety laws – the Occupational Safety and Health Act (OSHA).
Tonight, we honor their courage, resilience, and sacrifice and especially Grace Fryer, “the girl who fought on when all hope seemed gone; the woman who stood up for what was right, even as her world fell apart.”*

Camilla Anghelone^* 2026 (Mrs. Michaels, U/S
Kathryn Schaub, Costumes Princess, Programs)
Ouch, my back! Camilla is a senior and is so excited to be in her senior play as Mrs. Michaels, avid Radithor drinker. She's also had so much fun being Kathryn's understudy and costumes princess! She is beyond grateful for all of the people who made this amazing show a reality and has many a fun time creeping around in the party corner or asking people who has the stick. Now, she's decided enough is enough; enjoy the show! #imissyouronan #imissyouannie
Isabella Aufiero^* 2026 (Props, Set Construction)
Isabella is a senior on Props Crew. This is her third production. She is also in PVI Choir. When she has free time, she likes to do jigsaw puzzles and listen to music. She would like to mention that Wesley is not included in the show (if you haven't watched The Lorax go do that).
Keira Aufiero* 2027 (Head of Stage Crew, Costumes, Set Designer, Set Construction)
Keira Aufiero is a junior. She has been doing theatre for all three of her years here. She is on the costume crew and building/set construction crew. Last year she was named the Head of Stage Crew. This year, when we got new technical directors, she joined the set design crew. She is really excited with how the set came out. She had so much fun with the play. Now, she cannot wait for the musical.

Maryn Arseculeratne* 2027 (Stage Crew, Set Construction)
James Baker 2028 (Stage Crew)
For James Baker, this is the second PVI production he has ever helped in. James does stage crew, and he wouldn't trade that job for any other, because wearing all black and slinking around the stage in the dark just makes him look mysterious. James is happy to be doing another PVI show, because every other performance he has seen has moved him to tears and altered the course of his life for the better. Now enjoy trying to figure out which mysterious dark figure is James and pray that he remembers to lift the couch with legs and NOT throw out his back mid-performance (again).
Nina Baker^* 2026 (Mrs. Roeder, U/S Miss Wiley, Head of Hair and Makeup)
See the amazing makeup on stage? That was the work of the one and only Nina Baker (and Francesca Leiva) #hairandmakeupcoheads. Nina is a senior and is super excited to be playing the roles of Mrs. Roeder and understudying Miss Wiley. She has been involved in theatre since her freshman year as a chorus girl in the wonderful show Nice Work If You Can Get It and has only grown since then. But anyway, enough is enough, and Nina is so grateful for all of the great opportunities she has been given. Enjoy the show!

Kaitlyn Bradford 2028 (Ensemble, U/S Mrs. Roeder, Marketing, Set Construction)
This is Kaitlyn’s first year at PVI and she’s so excited to participate in her first show here. She’s happy to understudy a woman with a husband who lies to the Department of Labor. PVI Theatre is already such a big part of her life and she’s excited to see where she goes with it.
Maddie Bradford^* 2026 (Kathryn Schaub, Head of Programs, Head of Glamies, Set Designer)
How much time has passed since Maddie was a small freshman dancing in Nice Work? Maddie has experienced so much fun and amazing memories during her theatre years. From being Abigail Williams’ best friend and witch accuser in The Crucible, hoping the prince will propose to her and understudying the most positive and upbeat step sister Joy in Cinderella, being the headstrong stubborn but also perfect in every way Lizzie Bennett in Pride and Prejudice, preying on Joseph and dancing as a Brother’s Wife in Joseph and the yada yada, to finally playing Kathryn Schaub fighting to get justice for the Radium Girls and also like not dying. Maddie is so, so incredibly grateful for every opportunity she has been given and all of the people she has gotten to meet and grow so close with. For one final play, she hopes you enjoy the show and thank you for everything!

Gabbi Burgos^* 2026 (Grace Fryer, Co-Head of Marketing, Programs)
Gabbi welcomes you to this tragic story. You may have spotted Gabbi before as the Pharaoh with Egyptian swag, Lady Catherine with her deadly feather hat, and, most famously, a purple demon rum supporter. In this show, however, Gabbi will be busy painting dials and watching the little ’uns. #mama #companymeeting

Kaitlyn Byrdy* 2028 (Ensemble, Set Construction)

Christian Castro 2028 (Edward Markley, Dr. Harrison Martland)
Christian, now a sophomore, is very excited to be working on this marvelous production. Now, a message from Markley: (In Saul Goodman voice) “I wasn’t there when the radium paint was mixed or the dials were brushed. I kept Arthur Roeder out of jail, lied for him, and made millions. I was essential. Without me, the U.S. Radium Corporation would’ve collapsed—and some of those girls might still be alive.”
Coco Celestini* 2028 (U/S Irene Rudolph, Ensemble, Master Painter, Set Construction)
Camila Celis 2028 (Stage Crew)
Camila is a sophomore. She is extremely excited since it's her first time doing backstage theatre! She has been an actor in only one play: Peter Pan. She also loves drawing, writing stories, reading, history, music, singing, and musicals.

Reagan Copeland* 2028 (Ensemble, U/S Mrs. Macneil/Society Woman, Set Construction)
Ladies and Gentleman...it's the moment you've been waiting for...it's...Reagan Copeland as dial painter #4!! (Applause!!) Reagan is a sophomore, and she's ecstatic to be in this production. When she isn't painting dials or spending time at the woman's club, she is part of PVI's SGA. Reagan loves fries, spending time with her friends and family. Sofia DiClemente 2029 (Costumes, Hair and Makeup)
Sofia is a freshman who joined costume and makeup because someone said there’d be glitter (and they were right). She spends her time sewing, styling, and pretending she totally meant to get hairspray in her coffee. When she’s not chasing runaway bobby pins or guarding costumes from paint, snacks, and sheer panic, she’s probably adding “just one more” rhinestone to something that probably doesn’t need it. Sofia is thrilled to help bring Radium Girls to life one stitch, curl, and last-minute miracle touch-up at a time!
Kate Doyle^* 2026 (Hair and Makeup)

Last year, Herrera played Mr. Darcy in Pride and Prejudice as well as Reuben in Joseph and the Amazing Technicolor Dreamcoat, and over the summer, he performed as Wade Walker in Storm Performing Arts’ Cry-Baby the Musical. Herrera would like to thank Nico Flores, as Nico’s support motivated him throughout the rehearsal process, Nico’s dedication to the craft inspired him, and Nico’s profound talent for understanding a character helped him to become a better actor.

Kaminski* 2026 (Dial Painter, Women's Club, U/S Mrs. Fryer)
Genevieve, a junior at PVI, loves lighthearted shows (Cinderella, Pride and Prejudice), but dark plays (The Crucible, Radium Girls) really bring the drama! She’s played parts ranging from possessed teens to pragmatic aunts to wicked stepmothers, and now she gets the best of both worlds as a dial painter and understudy Mrs. Fryer. When she’s not on stage, you can find her in the music room, attempting to hit high notes (#diesirae) or the library, studying with friends. She’d like to thank her family for supporting her in all of her endeavors, and Lucky for being the best dog ever.

Charlotte is a senior! This is her 4th play and 11th show! If you enjoyed her One Act Better Than the Movie, make sure to mark your calendars for February 13 and come see the DE Acting classes' play; she's directing! From being the victim in a murder mystery (Daisy), to dancing in the woods and drinking chicken blood (Betty U/S), then being the belle of the Netherfield ball in her ridiculous hat (Kitty U/S), to finally being the head of The Woman’s Club of Orange, (Cora), she's done it all! She hopes you enjoy the show and see all of our hard work!
Aramis Rahai 2029 (Marketing)
HALLO! Aramis is ecstatic to join the PVI crew and is so ready to help with set construction and marketing. She has been in theatre for three years now and is very excited to audition for the musical. Aramis has been hearing about the amazing PVI Theatre and is so hype to join us.
Maddy Renuart^* 2026 (Irene Rudolph, Programs)
Maddy is a senior and this is her last PVI Theatre season (duh, because she’s graduating...hopefully). She plays Irene (whoop whoop). She is so excited about this show, and she is so grateful to everyone who has worked so hard to get this show moving! #fhanks #lala #SHELBYY #yourequiteanexperience #ripporkchop

Lexy Said^* 2026 (Ms. Wiley, Co-Head of Marketing, Hair & Makeup, Programs)
Lexy is absolutely ecstatic for you to see this production. In this production, she plays the powerful, confident, formidable, beautiful, gorgeous, stunning (now I’m just talking about Lexy at this point) lawyer Ms. Katherine Wiley (don’t forget it’s with a K and one L). Lexy has loved all of the memories and people theatre has brought her, and she is so sad that the impending doom of it ending is fast approaching. But let’s not focus on that now! Enjoy the show and remember public sympathy is our strongest weapon!

Keegan is currently a sophomore, and this is his first play; he is very excited. Keegan is very active in the PVI Music Department, playing violin, fife, and bass drum. He also throws shot put and discus for PVI Track & Field. Keegan also enjoys 3D printing and wasting plastic on useless gadgets that will never get used. Keegan also enjoys sewing and making his pants pockets large enough to fit a whole fife. He enjoys some tomfoolery from time to time and mimicking bird whistles with his hands.

James Skees* 2027 (Raymond Berry/Dr. Joseph Knef, U/S Tom Kreider, Set Designer, Clock Construction) You know, I thought about making this a normal bio for once, but…Ladies and Gentlemen, I would like to present to you, my magical cure-all…THE MCDONALD’S MCRIB!!! The McRib is known to save lives! Here are some testimonies from real customers: from Mr. Sur, “I was on death row, and for my last meal I asked for a McRib, and when I took my first bite, I was let go!” Another testimony comes from Mr. Lockwood, “One time I was walking down the street, and I got MUGGED! But the mugger saw that I had a McRib with me, so he left me alone.” So, go to your local McDonald’s and get the McRib for the low, low price of $4.49!

Tyler Sperow 2028 (William J. A. Bailey, Board Member, Ensemble, Set Construction)
Tyler is a sophomore and is so happy he gets to be in another PVI Theatre performance. He is involved with PVI Crossroads and created the Panther Puzzlers Club freshman year. He loves listening to music and solving puzzles. He has done A Midsummer Night’s Dream, Junie B Jones Jr., and Aladdin Jr. outside of PVI Theatre, as well as rehearsing for James and the Giant Peach Jr.
Saron is a sophomore and is very thrilled to be working on this production. Last year, she worked on both performances. Saron is a shawty bae who loves and cares for her family and friends. Saron's face card never declines, and in every picture she is always mogging. Even though Saron has a bent phone, she still knows how to overcome her problems. She is excited to be working with her friends Cecilia, Emma, Sophia, Kaitlyn, and Camila in theatre. She wants to thank God, her family, and friends for their immense support! - Written by Cecilia

In her free time, she enjoys reading, practicing the clarinet, and playing chess. She has had a fantastic time working in PVI Theatre, and she hopes you enjoy the show!
Katharine is a freshman. She is so excited to be on stage crew for Radium Girls and can't wait for everyone to see the show!
