FROM THE

HEAD OF SCHOOL s I reflect on all the blessings Paul VI has experienced during its first 40 years, I am reminded once again of the many blessings bestowed on our Catholic community. This year’s theme of “Living in Communion” is alive and well, as you will see in the articles, quotes, and stories in this issue of Panther Tracks. Our community continues to serve others through a recent mission trip to Guatemala, as well as upcoming trips to Camden, New Jersey and the Dominican Republic. In addition, our new co-teaching model highlights this year’s theme and is a gift to our faculty and students.

About fifteen years ago, a book about the future of Catholic schools in the U.S. was published and noted concerns regarding the availability, accessibility, and affordability of Catholic schools in the future. Among other points, the book spoke of the five essential marks of a Catholic school. The third one, in particular, resonated with me — “animated by communion and community.” As I read it, I thought, “Clearly, the authors must have been thinking about PVI when they wrote this.”

• Our future as a Catholic school is bright and our community is second to none! We have a number of new initiatives that speak to our communion and community that I would like to share.

• Our new Enrollment Management team has developed programs to enhance our admissions process. All of our prospective students meet with an administrator during their Visit Days and their parents interact with student, parent, and faculty panelists. This has helped us create a welcoming and holistic approach to admissions. Families’ comments have mentioned our “impressive student ambassadors” and “the warmth and friendliness that pervaded the school environment. It felt like more than just a place of education; it felt like a second home.”

• We are working with consultants to further develop and expand our abilities to meet the needs of all students. Recognizing that we all think and learn differently, we have enhanced our exceptional learning programs to include co-teaching and learning support specialists.

We have also reduced class sizes and hope to expand our elective offerings for next year.

We continue to explore ways to ensure that a Catholic education is affordable for all. We have increased tuition assistance and plan to offer more merit-based scholarships for the 2024-2025 academic year.

These are just a few of the many things happening on campus, and none of them could happen without our extended Panther family located all over the world. Thanks to the commitment and generosity of so many, we are able to grow our Catholic community, making it available, accessible, and affordable — and for that, you have my sincere appreciation and gratitude.

he classroom is a place where students are reminded every day that they are being loved by the God who is creating the present moment for them and by the classmates He has given to accompany them on their journey.

By living in communion, we discover that we are not alone as we face our questions about our lives and about the future.

I belong to a people I did not choose but that God knew I needed to become myself.

Because there is a community that sees more in me, I can face my life with the certainty that I am loved and this allows me to hope that the future will be good for me.

By living in communion, I experience being deeply loved by the people Christ gave to me.

The classes at PVI allow every student to live in communion.

Through the class discussions, group work, and projects they participate in every day, all students grow in their sense of belonging to one another.

Encountering Joy in Guatemala Reflection by Xuan Le ’24

In June 2023, I had the privilege of my life going to Guatemala on a PVI mission trip. I arrived at the airport at 3:45 a.m., the Saturday following the week of exams, oblivious to the fact that that was the rough start to the best week of my life. After a four hour flight, we landed at the Guatemala airport, which was not air conditioned. That was the first of two discomforts of the week. We next experienced a three hour bus ride in a cramped chicken bus with our luggage either on the roof or in our lap. Conditions were not what I expected. But then, we arrived at Hogar de la Niña—which is essentially a haven, run by 14 religious sisters, for girls ages 4-12, who come from the darkest places—and all the prior discomfort was met with a love I have never encountered. We were greeted by a Guatemalan storm, along with a line of girls excited to see us. I later learned that this was only a preview of the true joy that these girls embodied. This mission trip taught me two valuable lessons in life:

Know Who You Are and Whose You Are. After spending a few hours at Hogar, I went to the chapel, and said to Jesus, “I’m sad and my heart is heavy. I had expectations of how I would feel on this trip and sadness wasn’t one of them. These girls are the happiest people I have ever encountered, but they have nothing.

Here I am, with everything and more that I need to live, but I’m still not satisfied.” I carried this thought with me throughout the trip. One day at Hogar, we helped the sisters around the property, cleaning gardens, pulling weeds, and painting walls. After the hot and tiring day, I went into the chapel and there was all-day Adoration. I walked in on maybe a second grade class laying right in front of Jesus in the monstrance. I sat down behind them and then it all made sense. These girls don’t have “nothing.” They have absolutely everything that they need and it’s Him. They know who Jesus is, and they know who they are in Jesus, and that is all that matters. They radiated a joy that reflected Joy Himself. I believe that if we all knew this, we would be unstoppable.

The Human Person is Valuable.

Every time I walked up the stairs into the pavilion where we spent most of our time at Hogar, there were girls waiting for me at the top. From the moment we met them, to the moment we said our goodbyes, they valued us for who we are. The sisters, the girls, and the people we encountered in the surrounding villages, respected the dignity of humanity like I have never seen before. They desired to know my name, where I was from, what my family is like, how I know Jesus, and so much more. They greeted everyone with a hug and generosity.

Whenever we entered a village, they lit fireworks, and came out of their homes to welcome us. They just had a strong desire to love that I have never seen. The people of Guatemala loved with no strings attached and it showed. And they desired to know, so that they could further love. If we all valued our neighbors the way they did, I believe the world would be a better place.

Like a Lighthouse

Advisory guides students through high school journey Article by Cooper Sundra ’26

Like the sighting of a lighthouse – whether while in the midst of a storm or on a clear, pleasant day – Paul VI’s Advisories are a constant, illuminating beam of light guiding students through their high school journey to new shores.

Four days a week, these groups of 20 or so students representing all four grade levels meet to reset, rejoice, review, or relax while building connections with other students in the same core group throughout their years at PVI. Led by pairs of Big Brothers & Big Sisters and two teacher-advisors, each 25-minute gathering serves as a safe “go-to” harbor where students participate in whole-group activities, small-group sessions, partnerships, or autonomously. Advisories embrace the opportunity to attend Mass together in the Chapel during their advisory period about once a month.

PVI’s Advisory program is a community-centric initiative designed to create a welcoming, relationship-building environment where students can share, reflect upon, participate in, and/or secure support regarding challenges or concerns unique to their particular experiences or with questions in general common in the life of a high school student.

“Through Advisory, students are able to have intentional time with students from other grade levels, sports teams, clubs, and extracurriculars,” explained Mr. Nick Zaso, Assistant Coordinator of Campus Ministry. “This mixed variety of students come to study, laugh, pray, and enjoy fellowship in communion with one another. Students are able to receive mentorship from upperclassmen and, in turn, grow to be mentors themselves to younger students.”

Advisory runs from 1-1:25 p.m. Mondays, Tuesdays, Thursdays, and Fridays; students are dismissed early on Wednesdays for teachers’ professional development meetings. Advisory not only gives students a chance to relax and socialize with peers of different age groups, but also provides students a reprieve in the middle of the day from their regular 90-minute class routines. It’s also a great time to catch up or get ahead with schoolwork.

“I like how Advisory is scheduled in the middle of the day,” shares Pat Ngongba ’24. “It gives us a break from our classes, a chance to get some work done if we need to, and the opportunity to socialize with new and old friends.”

Advisory also helps bring the school together as one with all the activities done together throughout the school year.

“In addition to leading Intention Rosaries once a month with our group and staying on top of everyone’s grades, I’m looking forward to launching some new initiatives with my co-advisor/ teacher Ms. Fassinger this year to further help students get to know more about each other and feel comfortable talking to each other outside class time,” shares Mr. Joseph Sebastian, Theology teacher.

A new addition to Advisory this year is the opportunity to attend Mass and receive the Sacrament of Communion with a few other advisory groups. Experiencing Mass with one’s advisory further helps bring students closer to each other and to God. “We all need grace and truth,” shares Fr. Stephen Schultz, PVI’s Chaplain. “I want our students to consider Mass less of a big event as it is in the Panther Athletic Center and see the Mass as a beautiful prayer we can pray every day.”

Computer Science Ventures and Business Dreams

Students gain hands-on experience through summer internships

Many PVI students seized the opportunity to turn classroom knowledge into real-world experience by completing summer internships. These two Panthers were able to travel to other states and explore possible career interests.

Adventures in Entrepreneurship Sophia Bonilla ’26 participated in the Business Plan Design Competition (BPDC) for Diocesan high school teams at Marymount University during her freshman year, and was able further explore entrepreneurship during the summer.

After hearing about her experience with BPDC, Sophia was invited by Ernst & Young (EY) to participate in an internship where she traveled to Los Angeles and New York to learn about various aspects of EY’s business.

She was invited to EY’s Entrepreneur of the Year Gala in Beverly Hills and was on stage to help present the awards.

“The experience really opened a new career path that I hope to explore further and prepare for college. I will carry the experience I gained from this trip with me, as well as everything I learned at PVI with Mrs. Gillman [Entrepreneurship teacher], my friends, and the Marymount competition,” shares Sophia.

Students Receive College Board Recognitions

Katrina Boland and Peter Delacourt were named Semifinalists in the annual National Merit Scholarship Program.

Iain Valleskey, Matthew Thomas, Aditi Allam, John Westerlund, and Hans Sirotniak were named Commended Students.

Applications for AI Peter Delacourt ’24 had an internship at Los Alamos National Laboratory in New Mexico (LANL) this past summer. Peter spent seven weeks in New Mexico working in LANL’s internal operations department. He researched and tested AI and machine learning tools for data analysis with the goal of making a database of incident reports more easily searchable.

“It was a great experience. I want to study computer science in college and I learned that there are a lot of tools and opportunities out there that I didn’t know about.”

Peter shares that his time at PVI helped prepare him for the task. “For my early years in elementary school, I could coast, but during my sophomore and junior year at PVI I was challenged and it made me realize I had to give my schoolwork the time it deserved. This helped me understand that I needed to give my work the time it deserved in order to do a good job at LANL.”

Nicolas Font, Alyssa Gomez, Isabel Gomez, Gabriel Herrera, Adrian Levano, and Mateo Sur earned the National Hispanic Recognition Award from College Board’s National Recognition Programs.

School Board Update Paul VI is excited to introduce the three newest members of the School Board.

Marie Cox P ’23, ’26 Marie is Vice President of Contract Management, with Paradigm Contractors, LLC, a local real estate development, construction and property management company. She has been with the company since 1994 (minus some years of staying home with her daughters) and worked for the development team before joining the construction team. She is responsible for contract administration and facilitates the review and coordination of agreements between Paradigm and various owners as well as subcontractors. Marie has been active in volunteering at St. Leo the Great Catholic School and the Mosby Woods Pool Board, as well as a past member of the Board of Architectural Review for the City of Fairfax.

Marie has enjoyed volunteering at Paul VI through the Varsity Cheer team, on the Black & Gold Gala Committee, and serving on the Facilities and Safety Committee for the School Board.

Melissa Hish ’94 Melissa is Executive Vice President of Wells + Associates, where she started as a transportation engineer in 1998 after she graduated from Virginia Tech. She has provided transportation consulting to clients in various local and national jurisdictions and now works to ensure that the technical and administrative staff have the tools necessary to perform with efficiency and success. Melissa is a sponsor for the RCIA program at St. John Neumann Catholic Community in Reston and enjoys being a very active aunt for her nieces and nephews while providing a

Tom is an attorney with Davis, Wright Tremaine, LLP, where he focuses his practice on securities and investment regulation.

His clients include broker-dealers, investment advisers, public companies, banks, and individuals. Before joining Davis Wright Tremaine, he founded and served as the Washington, D.C., managing partner for McGonigle, P.C., the decorated securities law firm that combined with DWT in 2022. Tom is a member of St. Leo the Great Catholic Church and has assisted the church and school through their PTO and the Development and Finance Committees.

Tom has been a loyal and generous supporter of the Fund for Paul VI and the Building on Extraordinary Campaign. “My late wife, Monica, and I entrusted all three of our children to the care of Paul VI, and that was one of the best decisions we ever made for our family.

Co-Teaching and Collaboration Deans in the Classroom and Co-Teaching Model Helps Students Succeed ince the mid-1970s, co-teaching models have been used to help students with exceptional learning needs access the curriculum in the general education setting. Typically, the general education and special education teachers share the delivery of instruction, are able to work more closely with smaller groups or individuals, and provide meaningful accommodations.

Students often report significant benefits as a result of a more individualized learning environment. An article in the International Journal of Education and Practice, 8(1), 1-17, Impact of co-teaching approach in inclusive education settings on the development of reading skills, by Gokbulut, O. D., Akcamete, G., & Güneyli, A. (2020) found that “Whether incorporating accommodations or modifications, when teachers used a co-teaching strategy, the students were more cognitively and actively engaged during class, asking questions, working with a partner, and getting assignments completed.

Students exhibit significantly higher levels of engagement and higher efficiency in cotaught classes as compared to those students in a solo-taught classroom.”

This year, Paul VI has introduced a co-teaching model in several classes. Head of School Mrs. Laura Swenson co-teaches Algebra 1 and Mrs. Stephanie Zimmerman co-teaches in English and Biology.

Additionally, our principal and deans continue to teach a class, allowing them to connect with our students and department teachers authentically. Principal Dr. Tom Opfer ’96 teaches Math classes, Dean of Instruction Mrs. Ana Aldana teaches two Spanish classes, Dean of Faculty Mrs. Melanie Kiernan ’92 teaches two English classes, Dean of Curriculum Mr. Apolonio Latar teaches two Theology classes, and Director of Counseling Mrs. Sandra Stankiewicz teaches a section of AP Psychology.

All are delighted to spend time with students. Whether it is in the classroom, on stage, on the field or court, in the chapel, or in the hallway, our administrators are out and about connecting with students. Aldana noted, “I love teaching. I love being in the classroom and helping students Grow in Grace and Wisdom while immersing themselves in the Spanish language and culture. My classroom experience is pertinent to supporting other teachers with their instruction, as I can share ideas and strategies that have proven successful in my classes.”

The students are able to experience a variety of teaching styles and perspectives in order to master content. Students are able to learn in an environment that accepts and welcomes diversity in learning. As an educator, I have been very blessed to be able to work with, as well as continue to learn and strengthen my professional skills, with other amazing teachers I work with at PVI. One of the greatest things we can teach our students is the importance of being a lifelong learner and the co-teaching environment is a great experience for our students to see this in action.

Mrs. Eyerman is a graduate of The Catholic University of America, which she describes as “a great experience which provided amazing clinicals in area hospitals.” Before coming to PVI, she worked for 34 years in pediatrics and triage within hospitals.

Mrs. Ferrufino is originally from Bolivia (South America) and studied at San Simón Medical University. She has over twelve years of experience as an adult and pediatric nurse. In South

America, she worked in a childbirth and maternity hospital, and also served as a surgical assistant.

After coming to the United States, she worked as a clinical medical assistant and nurse in an OBGYN clinic and then in a pediatric clinic. Now at PVI, Mrs. Ferrufino is able to combine two of her passions: her faith and her love of the medical field.

Mrs. Kryvoruka graduated from Saint Joseph University with a Master’s degree in Nurse Anesthesia and Health Administration and worked as a nurse anesthetist for over 33 years. “I worked from Level 1 burn and trauma centers to outpatient surgery units — all levels of anesthetic care.”

staff helps students with specific medical needs safely take part in their school activities, provides crucial medical support, administers first aid, and gives students a place to come if they feel ill. They handle everything from a simple papercut to calling 911. The majority of the clinic’s care is in between — which sometimes brings gray areas. The nurses need to use good nursing assessment, their nursing knowledge, and experience to care for students.

The clinic also keeps both students and staff healthy and happy by offering basic medical advice, encouraging a healthy lifestyle, and performing health screenings. They help with overall public health by reviewing immunization compliance, monitoring for any contagious illness, and managing state, county, and diocesan required health forms.

The clinic also sponsors workshops and trainings to keep faculty and staff up to date and compliant with diocesan required trainings such as CPR. “The clinic is an essential piece of the school’s workings and frequently works with other departments to help support the students and our school community,” shares Mrs. Eyerman.

Game Changers

Athletic Trainers Keep Student Athletes Safe, Healthy and Supported Through athletics, students learn the value of teamwork, competition and hard work, as well as how to deal with failure and adversity. Our dedicated athletic trainers — Mr. Ken Kuberski, Ms. Amanda McCombs and Dr. Mary Barron ’95 — put in long hours to help safeguard the physical well-being and competitive spirit of student athletes at Paul VI.

Meet the Trainers Ken Kuberski has been at PVI for over 30 years and currently serves in two roles: Associate Director of Athletics and Head Athletic Trainer. He graduated from James Madison University.

Amanda McCombs joined the PVI staff in 2020 as a full-time Athletic Trainer. She graduated from George Mason University.

Mary Barron ’95 works part-time at PVI; she returned to PVI in 2013 as an Athletic Trainer. She is a full-time associate professor at George Washington University. Barron attended Longwood College (now Longwood University) where she continued her athletic career as a Lady Lancer Women’s Basketball player.

She continued her education at Michigan State University.

What is a typical day like for our athletic trainers?

According to the athletic trainers, there is no typical day! Every day and every season is different.

Whether teams leave early for away games or have home games in the afternoon, the athletic trainers prepare and make sure they are ready to compete. This may consist of diagnosing injuries, performing vital on-field/court/mat injury evaluations and immediate first aid care, or rehabilitating injuries The athletic trainers help evaluate whether an athlete is ready to compete or practice or if they need more time to recover.

High Traffic Area By design, Paul VI has a bigger athletic training room than many schools in the area. The space is where the athletic trainers evaluate and rehabilitate injuries. The athletic training room is outfitted with treatment tables, taping stations, exercise and rehabilitative equipment, and a hydration and cooling tub to help with heat related issues.

Students can visit the athletic training room by appointment as early as 1:30 p.m., with 3 p.m. being the busiest time of day.

After the bell rings, the athletic trainers help students get ready for practice or games. On average, the athletic trainers can see between 10-15 students leaving for an away game and another 20-30 students after school. On a very busy day, they can see up to 50-60 students after school! In a year, they go through about 80 cases (over 2,500 rolls) of athletic tape.

Around 4:30 p.m. and into the evening, the athletic trainers attend all home games, where they observe on the sidelines, looking out for potential injuries, ready to step in and address any emergencies for either team.

There are often competitions on Saturdays so the trainers frequently work during the weekend as well.

In their own words I like the interactions with the student athletes. I can see students at their worst, when they are at their most upset and frustrated. I value being able to comfort them during that period and then working with them to get them back to practice and competition.

We take 10 minutes to calm down — and it’s often not as bad as they think it’s going to be. After an injury, the biggest reward is helping students get to the day that they ‘graduate’ back to playing.

Lifelong Learners Athletic trainers have to recertify every two years, which includes taking courses and having 50 hours of contact time.

They also train on their emergency action plans every season, including what to do in the event of a spinal cord injury.

In the summer of 2023, Paul VI hosted a training for athletic staff from around the Diocese that covered best practice for preventing and treating exertional heat illness (EHI). PVI also recently acquired a Kestrel device, which measures things like temperature, atmospheric pressure and wind speed to calculate whether conditions could be unsafe for athletic activity.

The athletic trainers and school nurses work hand-in-hand to safeguard the health and wellness of the PVI student body. “The athletic trainers and clinic [see page 16] are in communication every day,” according to Kuberski.

Vivian Alonso ’02 is happily employed part time in the mail room facility for the House of Representatives. She delivers mail in the Longworth House Office Building. She loves her job as it entails lots of social contact. Vivian keeps up with her exercise by taking taekwondo classes and participating in Special Olympics soccer, basketball and track & field.

Allison Wells ’05 lives in Swansboro, North Carolina and works at a local restaurant. She volunteers at a local ministry and has been dancing with the local dance academy for 10 years. She lives with her parents and dog Toby in her own “apartment” in their house. She loves being near the beach and going out on kayaks and boats.

William Hingston ’05 attended the Davis Center and then worked at Wildflour Bakery in Chantilly. He is now a member of Blue Ridge Opportunities in Front Royal, Virginia, through which he participates in various volunteer activities, including helping at senior centers, firehouses and food relief projects.

Emily Dalgetty ’05 started a Coffee and Community ministry at her home parish, St. Mark Church in Vienna last year.

She serves coffee, tea and her homemade treats to fellow parishioners and church staff members in the church activity center.

Ryan Gutkowski ’06 is volunteering two days a week at the Smithsonian Museum of Natural History. He has been volunteering since 2013. His responsibilities include delivering mail, shredding, stocking the information kiosks, recycling and making copies for the Office of Education.

Jenny Holden attended the George Mason University LIFE Program after PVI. She lived on campus for two years and was on the GMU student government.

Jenny now loves working with children as a teacher’s aide for a Montessori preschool and a program assistant for Fairfax County’s Therapeutic Recreation Summer Camp. She is a member of an ArtStream inclusive theater company, and even performed at the Kennedy Center. She likes advocating for people with disabilities and is a Best Buddies Ambassador. She loves sports, reading, and visiting friends.

Gregory Hoppe ’09 completed three years at Davis Career Center after PVI, working at a retirement home, a middle school cafeteria, an architecture firm (clerical/office work), and at the Davis Center catering program (food prep, delivery, distribution). Following that, he worked housekeeping at several hotels, and for the last six years has worked at one of the campus cafeterias at George Mason University. Greg continues to act with Artstream VA, and for the past three summers has also performed in mainstage musicals with Heart House Inclusive Productions Inc. of Woodbridge.

Evan Patchett ’11 graduated from Davis Career Center in 2014. He worked at Stryker, a medical supply company in Leesburg. Last year, he moved into a group home in Sterling with his best friend.

Evan passed away peacefully at Inova Loudoun Hospital on December 3, 2023.

Tasha Adkins-Blanch ’11 lives in an apartment with her friend and Options alumna Meagan Mundy ’09. Tasha works at ECHO where she makes dog biscuits at the Barkery and participates in the business program. She still loves Disney, movies, music and Special Olympics, as well as watching FC Barcelona games!

Joseph Gittinger ’13 attended Woodrow Wilson Center. He then moved to the small town of Cape Charles, Virginia, where he has worked several jobs. For the past three years, he has enjoyed working for Cape Charles Public Works.

Meredith Cripe ’15 graduated from the George Mason LIFE program. She works at Paul VI three days a week, helping with office tasks in the Advancement office and other offices that need assistance, including the Head of School and Counseling. She has remained involved in Special Olympics and competes in soccer, basketball and swimming.

Elizabeth Eisenberg ’16 graduated from the George Mason LIFE program in 2020. She has been working at St. Mark Catholic School since 2020 as a classroom assistant and with the Extended Day Care program. She also volunteers at Oak Mar recreation center 2-3 times per week.

Kate Brockwell ’16 was happily working at PVI in the Advancement office when her dad, Matt, brought her out to Oklahoma. In Oklahoma, Kate is involved in a great organization called Wings. At Wings, Kate is sharing her love for all things with the greater community. She is working with other adults with challenges to provide food, supplies and God’s love to those in need.

Connor Andahl ’18 is working on becoming a library assistant by taking classes online and volunteering parttime at a local library.

Spencer Lee Darling ’20 attended Virginia Commonwealth University’s ACE-IT program and graduated in May 2022. He is currently working part time at Dominion Energy and living in Midlothian, Virginia with his family.

Meghan Nuttall ’21 is a junior at the College of Charleston. She is majoring in early childhood education and hopes to work as a classroom aid. Shankar Gomathinayagam ’22 is currently in his second year of the CAST program at Loudoun County Public Schools, where he is getting exposure to different job opportunities and work experiences. Shankar also completed his fourth year working at Cox Farms’ fall festival and is doing a part-time internship as a stocker at a local Walgreens.

Carson Hill ’23 works at the United States Geological Survey (USGS) in Reston, Virginia, where he assists scientists with data management for their research studies. Carson participates in the Secondary Transition to Employment (STEP) program through the Fairfax County Public School system.

STEP collaborates with employers in the community to provide career training and life skills to young adults with disabilities.

The True Gifts ast June, I celebrated my 25-year college reunion with friends. As I walked back onto campus, the parallels between Stonehill College, a small Catholic college outside of Boston, and Paul VI seemed to exist at every turn. PVI instilled in me a commitment to “Grow in Grace and Wisdom.” Stonehill’s motto, “Lux et Spes” (Latin for ‘Light and Hope’), fostered the competence to see and the courage to act. Grace, wisdom, light, and hope were the tapestry of the most pivotal years in my education, woven by communities that pride themselves on what can be accomplished together when we challenge, inspire, and support one another.

As I think back over my time in college and my years at PVI, I feel a sense of pride, joy, and gratitude. My parents sacrificed to give me these opportunities. The education and experiences I received from PVI and beyond forever shaped my life, and for that, I am truly grateful. What I realized, however, was that I am most thankful for the good people these schools put on my path in life.

I see grace and wisdom in the actions of our students, the tireless efforts of our faculty and staff, the generous gifts of our donors, and in our volunteers who answer our calls when we need help. You provide us with funding, extra hands to serve, and guidance and input to execute our vision while honoring our legacy. These are the true gifts that create the extraordinary fabric of PVI. We always say, “We don’t know how to thank you enough.” But we can try. The following pages are just one way to say thank you for the role you play as a part of our donor community. John Jezior ’87 🅐 was nominated for a Barrymore, a Philadelphia regional theatre award, for “Outstanding Leading Performance in a Play” for playing role of Eddie Carbone in A View from the Bridge. John writes, “Since 2016, I’ve done a handful of network and streaming TV shows, studio films, and indie films. I recently booked two independent movies that I’m looking forward to shooting in 2024. In the meantime, I continue to be a special-needs dad, which is the best job ever.”

Rich Wiersberg ’88 🅑 and his wife Gerrie started Wiersberg Warriors Foundation, a 501(c)(3) nonprofit in July 2022. “We started the foundation in honor of our son, OFC Spencer Wiersberg, who passed away in 2020 from cancer. We strive to continue his mission by assisting other young adults on the Eastern Shore who are battling cancer, illness, or other serious injury.”

Constance St. Germain ’90 🅒 was appointed as the first woman president of Capella University, a private for-profit, online university headquartered in Minneapolis, Minnesota. She joined Capella in 2017 as provost. Prior to going into education, Dr. St. Germain was a major in the US Army, Judge Adjutant’s Corps (JAG) and served with 18th ABN Corps, 82nd ABN Division and 1st Infantry Division.

Jennifer Bell Keating ’92, P ’22 🅓 was named the National All-Star Visionary of the Year for the Leukemia Lymphoma Society. She dedicated her campaign to her father, who passed away from leukemia in 2006, and to her friend and colleague who is an MDS survivor. Jennifer raised over $366,000 in 10 weeks! She is pictured with her son Thomas ’22.

Nilar Chit Tun ’98 🅔 has been living in Rome for the past five years. She writes a food blog (www.rangooninrome.com) and recently published a book called “The Iterations of Alex” — a story about friendship and learning to manage grief. “I wrote the book after one of my best friends passed away last November. It was the only way I could manage the grief and I wanted to pay tribute to my friend,” Nilar shares.

CJ Capen ’99 🅕 taught chorus at Paul VI from 2003-2005 and 2014-2018, and from 2019-2022 was music director for PVI’s spring musical. For the last 15 years, he served as Director of Music at his home parish, St. John Neumann Church in Reston.

He has now accepted a position at Bowling Green State University as music director and pianist/vocal coach. He writes, “I loved my time teaching at Paul VI, as well as my time at my home parish, but prior to my time at St. John Neumann, I was staff pianist at Elon University, and I knew it was only a matter of time before I would return to higher education. It’s not that teaching in college is necessarily more ‘advanced,’ but it can be more specific, and in my case it is performing music at a high level, honing the craft of individuals who wish to make a career in the arts; this suits the way I teach.”

Mary Anne Schwartz ’99 🅖 moved to Sacramento, California in 2018 for a promotional opportunity with work. She is now the Administrative Officer for the U.S. Secret Service in Sacramento. She writes, “I absolutely love the beautiful California weather, enjoy being a first time homeowner, and love touring and sightseeing on the West Coast, in particular Napa and Sonoma wineries, San Francisco, and Lake Tahoe. I spend a lot of my spare time volunteering with my church in youth ministry and with the homeless.”

Paige Gaut ’15 🅞 graduated from the University of Lynchburg in 2019 with a Bachelor’s in Exercise Science. She then earned a Master’s in Exercise Physiology from the College of St. Scholastica and a Doctorate in Physical Therapy from the University of St. Augustine for Health Sciences. She recently passed the National Physical Therapy Examination and was selected for a residency in Geriatric Physical Therapy at the Jacksonville VA Outpatient Clinic in Florida, where she now works. “I believe that my compassionate approach to patient care is rooted in my high school teachings at Paul VI about human dignity, charity, and the sanctity of life,” she shares.

After completing her residency, Paige plans to spend 24 months working in the Native American health care system, giving back to her Native community.

David Capen ’15 🅟 received his Bachelor of Business Administration from Campbell University. He then began a career in public service, working as a legislative aide to the House Committee on Ways & Means in the U.S. Congress, going on to serve at the state-level as Director of Policy at the North Carolina General Assembly. In 2021, David founded Capen Consulting, LLC, a political and public affairs firm

David was also an appointed member of the Planning & Zoning Board in the Town of Morrisville, North Carolina, and on the Board of Adjustment in Harnett County. David continues to advocate for affordable housing in the Commonwealth of Virginia, serving as Director of Public Affairs for the Home Builders Association, and residing on a small horse farm in the Richmond-area with his wife Rachel and their many pets. David was part of PVI’s first class of Mandarin Chinese students and is pictured speaking at PVI’s Chinese Honor Society induction ceremony in 2022.

Sophia Lama ’22 🅢 is a sophomore at Notre Dame. She shares, “I’m studying computer science in the college of engineering here, and I’m loving every minute of it! The work is hard but very satisfying. I’m also involved in CLU (a Catholic club on campus), as well as liturgical life in my residence hall. In my free time, I enjoy watching football and hockey games with friends, grabbing dinner off campus, and hosting movie nights in my dorm room! My favorite part about my experience here has been the sense of community. Most of my friends are fellow engineering students, and we spend a lot of time studying together and collaborating on homework!” She is pictured with Theology teacher Mrs. Linda Gott who attended a conference at Notre Dame in the fall with a few other PVI Theology teachers.

Andrew Pearce ’23 🅦 is a freshman at Duquesne University, a member of ROTC, and is studying Computer Science. He is involved in the Ranger Challenge Shadow team for Three Rivers Battalion. He also enjoys spending time in the gym powerlifting.

Brewing Success with PVI Business Partners Paul VI hosted its second annual Business Partners Coffee on November 3, providing an opportunity for local businesses and school leaders to network and collaborate.

Held on campus in the Learning Commons, the event brought together a diverse group of business leaders, parents, teachers, and school administrators.

Attendees gathered to share ideas, build relationships, and explore potential partnerships that will benefit both the local business community and PVI. Many of the business partners generously support Paul VI through sponsorships, advising, service, guest speaking, and student mentoring opportunities. During the coffee, Ana and Tony Stafford, owners of Ford’s Fish Shack, shared about ways they support and build community at PVI. “Our business partners inspire our students through their involvement in the classroom, help us elevate our programs through financial support, and are always a call away when needed,” shared Kate Andreottola ’94, Director of Advancement. “We are lucky to have them as part of the PVI family.”

From Panther to Professional

Kevin Kelly ’16 is pitching for MLB’s Tampa Bay Rays Q&A by Charles Thom ’25 St. Paul VI Catholic High School has a strong athletic history, with many alumni going on to college sports, and even a few alumni continuing sports at a professional level. One standout is Kevin Kelly ’16, who is competing in Major League Baseball and pitching for the Tampa Bay Rays. Kevin played for PVI throughout his high school career, always making the playoffs, and even competing in the finals his senior year. We reached out to Kevin to explore how his time at PVI shaped him as a person and professional athlete.

How did you get started in baseball?

I started playing baseball at a young age in the backyard. My first memory of it is when I was three, but I think my parents have a video of me playing when I was two. My dad is a huge baseball fan, so he got me into it early on. I always loved playing the game and have been fascinated by it since I first started playing.

How did you stay motivated in the sport when things were challenging?

I was able to stay motivated with help from my dad mostly. He was always ready to go outside and throw me batting practice if I had a bad game or throw an extra bullpen to him if I pitched poorly, allowing me to get that instant training feedback that I needed. Additionally, I had plenty of coaches along the way to help me. They ensured I was always put in the best place to succeed and helped me keep a positive mentality, even when things were going poorly.

What differentiates you from other players?

The major thing that differentiates me from other players is my arm slot. I release the ball from a low three-quarters arm slot that isn’t very common and I also throw a bit slower than most other pitchers as well, so I rely on sinkers to keep hitters from barreling the ball and throw a big sweeper that keeps hitters off balance.

What advice would you give your high school self today?

If I had to give my high school self advice today, I would say to focus hard on working off the baseball field, mainly nutritionally and in weight training. Nutrition and weightlifting were the two biggest things that took me from a good Division 1 pitcher to a professional baseball player.

Are there any habits that you learned in school that you can attribute your success to?

I think the biggest habit I learned in school was the importance of having a consistent daily routine. Every day I had to be sure I had all my homework for the next day done, be sure I had a clean uniform for the next day, and that I was prepared for any tests I had, among other things. Having a consistent routine every day helped me prepare for the real world where it’s on you to make sure you’re ready to face the day.

Having consistent routines applies to sports as well, as most development in athletics happens with consistent iteration each day, not in short spurts of massive improvement.

How has going to a Catholic school affected you today?

I think the education and discipline taught at Paul VI helped me to be a better person. Although I am not Catholic, PVI gave me another perspective early in life of how to conduct myself and how to help others.

How did the PVI community influence you or help you get to where you are today?

PVI influenced me greatly, from lifelong friends to education to athletics. My fiancée and best man both went to PVI, and we all met in high school. The education I received at PVI prepared me academically for the rigors of college, and I was able to graduate a semester early at JMU with the help of the AP courses I took at PVI. Finally, the preparation I received from Coach Nolan was second to none. I was able to transition to college baseball better than most other players because of his help.

How is playing in MLB so far? What are your goals for the future?

Playing in MLB has been very fun so far and is everything I have dreamed of. I hope to one day make an all-star team, hopefully in the not-too-distant future! Otherwise, I hope to continue being a consistent contributor on a playoff team, with the hope of winning the World Series.

From Soccer Goals to Pickelball Pro

Monica Paolicelli ’09 signs contract with Major League Pickleball Q&A compiled by Chase Tollefson ’24 Monica Paolicelli ’09 thrived at PVI as a multisport ahtlete and continued her sports career after high school, playing soccer at James Madison University.

Now she is a professional pickleball player.

Monica reflects on her time at PVI and her professional pickleball career in this Q&A by Chase Tollefson ’24.

How did you come across pickleball?

Five years ago, my aunt and uncle who live in Naples, Florida introduced it to me in their driveway, chalk lines and everything!

How did you get good at pickleball?

By always competing and practicing against people who were better than me.

How was your experience as an athlete at PVI? I was fortunate to be able to play both soccer and basketball at PVI. I played soccer all four years and basketball the first two. PVI athletics was a rewarding experience, both on and off the field. It helped and guided me to playing soccer in college at James Madison University.

What is your favorite PVI sports memory?

Scoring the winning goal against O’Connell at home.

How did your soccer career help you with your current pickleball career?

The footwork aspect definitely helped. Also just the athletic ability in general was important: quickness, reaction time, hand-eye coordination, and movement on the court.

How was your experience as a student at PVI? I loved PVI. I have so many great memories there, from all my friends to the faculty and staff.

How did the PVI community benefit you or help you get to where you are now?

The all-around experience, the daily life and tasks, and the classes all helped! PVI was a well-rounded learning experience that definitely helped form some of my daily work habits today.

What is it like to be a professional pickleball player?

The game is constantly changing and evolving so I think you really have to be open minded and competitive to survive. I never thought I would get the chance to play professionally as my full-time job so I am extremely grateful for that in my life. It’s a lot of traveling and long days but very rewarding after a long tournament weekend.

What is the most rewarding thing about being a professional pickleball player?

Winning one more match in a tournament setting, seeing your hard work and practice pay off.

What is the most challenging thing about being a professional pickleball player?

Riding the wave, sticking with it, not getting discouraged with all the new players coming into the sport.

Why do you think pickleball is suddenly so popular?

During COVID, it really started gaining popularity because people could get outside and be active just by making a court in their driveway and playing with their neighbors.

What would you say to someone thinking about trying pickleball?

It’s definitely a sport everyone can play; old can play with the young, males and females can play against each other. It’s truly inclusive and fun for everyone.

Anything else you would like to share?

Prayers for Father Schultz and Welcome Father Ramón In early October, PVI Chaplain Father Stephen Schultz suffered a stroke and was admitted to intensive care in a coma. Since then, Father Schultz has shown remarkable progress and the PVI community continues to pray for his healing and complete recovery. Fr. Season of Service

Living in Communion by Helping Our Neighbors Near and Far Before and during the holiday season, PVI students, faculty and staff were busy with service projects to help both the local and international communities. In the Boxes of Joy program, volunteers purchased items to fill boxes with toys, clothes, school supplies, and handwritten cards to send to children in Central America and Africa. This year, PVI filled hundreds of boxes. In the annual food drive benefitting Food for Others, over 39,000 pounds of food was donated, including more than 63,000 breakfast meals and nearly 27,000 cans of vegetables. Leading up to Christmas, the REACH club organized a Toys for Joys drive to provide gifts to children and families at the Don Bosco Center in Manassas.

These projects are an expression of our school’s mission of serving others. Thank you to all who participated!
