Little Lamb Preschool visited by Officer Pellicier Reading Club spaces available

The Bayonne Public Library has announced that there are still spaces available in the Summer Reading Club for children interested in participating. The theme this year is “Be a Smart Cookie and Read.”

Young readers must go to the Children’s Room to sign up and promise to read books during the summer. Children will receive prizes as they reach their goals during the summer.

The program will last until the end of August.

Registered Reading Club participants must come in once a week to sign their reading logs so that the library staff can keep track of their progress. In order to receive prizes, the students must come sign the logs. Summer Reading Club members are welcome to come in anytime that the Children’s Room is open.

Oresko School celebrates Water Festival

FESTIVAL GUESTS – Nicholas Oresko School students welcomed some special guests to the ninth annual Water Festival. On May 16, Nicholas Oresko School held its ninth annual Water Festival.

Students in grades pre-k to eight attended.

The festival offered the opportunity for students, faculty, families and community members to gather in a carnival-like atmosphere to celebrate water. Through hands-on experiments, activities, crafts, and games, participants learned about water’s properties and the ways to conserve and protect water and the environment.

Science teacher Barbara DeBenedictis and her students planned, decorated, and ran the festival. This is the eighth year that DeBenedictis has received a grant from N.J. Project WET to run the festival.

Seventh and eighth grade students created educational displays and facilitated the table activities for younger students. Some of these activities included creating water cycle bracelets, rainsticks and suncatchers; playing magnetic fishing games and ocean habitat matching games for prizes; running a water relay race; planting seeds in

take-home planters; experimenting with properties of water, such as surface tension and buoyancy; and making bubbles from a homemade mixture.

Each table had a student-created educational display, including those themes such as aquatic habitats, fish advisories for Newark Bay, water conservation, pollution, photosynthesis, and water properties.

Attendees included Mayor Mark Smith, Superintendent of Schools Dr. Patricia McGeehan, science director David Minard, and state coordinator for N.J. Project WET Kevin Kopp. Students from Vroom School also attended. The organizations that worked with the students and faculty for this year’s festival included the Municipal Utilities Authority, United Water, the Hudson County Improvement Authority, and Passaic Valley Sewerage Authority. Parents donated snacks and volunteered time to help out. The Oresko P.T.A. provided a bottle of water and pizza for each student.

Little Lamb Preschool students recently received a visit from Officer Daniel Pellicier, a lifelong resident of Bayonne who has been protecting and serving the citizens of Hudson County as a Sheriff’s Officer for nearly five years. The children have been learning about the importance of community helpers. Officer Pellicier’s main goal was for the two- to five-year-old group to understand that a Sheriff’s Officer is their friend.

With the help of a workbook featuring the famous Officer McGruff the Crime Dog, Officer Pellicier taught the children about topics ranging from stranger danger to the importance of 9-1-1. He handed out the coloring workbooks and came equipped with crayons, rulers, pencils, and bookmarks, all labeled with important tips to remember.

After the presentation, he visited with the toddler classes. The staff of Little Lamb Preschool thanked Officer Pellicier for taking time out of his busy day to come visit. To arrange a firefighter, EMT, or military servicemember visit with Little Lamb, call (201) 437-6244.

Bayonne students achieve Dean’s List at FDU At Fairleigh Dickinson University’s Metropolitan Campus, located in Teaneck and Hackensack, recently announced the names of Bayonne students who qualified for the Dean’s List during the spring 2012 semester. They are as follows: Alfred Constantino; Stephen Mallardi; Maria Ruiz-Martinez; Joanthony Santiago; Kimberli Suarez; and Jesus Tolentino.

To qualify for the Dean’s List at FDU, students must carry a 3.2 or higher grade point average out of a possible 4.0, and be enrolled in a minimum of 12 letter-graded hours (four courses).

Alice Priano named Educator of the Year Alice Luke Priano, student assistance counselor, was named Educator of the Year 2012 at Brook Crossing Elementary School in South Brunswick. A former Bayonne resident, Priano graduated from Henry Harris School and Bayonne High School, as well as The College of New Jersey with a bachelor’s degree in psychology and a minor in women’s and gender studies. She also graduated from Rider University with an educational specialist degree in school psychology.

The criteria for the award included establishing a positive classroom climate, excellent rapport with the students, using effective learning techniques, and instilling the love of learning and a feeling of selfworth in students, according to the district.

Superintendet Dr. McCartney said that the honor “is the highest honor that a teacher can receive.”

Principal Jodi Mahoney added that Priano deserved the recognition “by helping the students feel safe and respected.”

HONOR SCHOOL – The Nicholas Oresko School Student Council was recently recognized as the 2011-2012 Bayonne School District’s “Honor School” during the Bayonne High School Student Council Leadership Summit. TIME TO LOOK – At Nicholas Oresko School, grade four students performed a musical play, “It’s Time to Look at New Jersey,” directed by music teacher Marianne Greiman-Hurley and fourth grade teacher Nancy Jaros on June 14.

MARITIME TOUR – Nicholas Oresko School recently hosted its 24th annual Maritime Tour, during which fifth grade students participated in a unique and educational field trip. The children experienced a multitude of hands-on activities, including sea-faring history, basic seamanship, marine ecology, whale observations, and Pilgrim and Wampanoag lifestyles.

The trip included visits to Mystic Seaport, Conn.; Provincetown, Mass.; and Plymouth, Mass. The three-day trip was chaperoned by parents and teachers Mr. Tokar, Mrs. Dwyer, and Mrs. Weimmer.

LECTURE WINNERS – The sophomore honors students at Bayonne High School, enrolled in U.S. 1 APH and English 10 Honors courses, attended the Thomas Jefferson Lecture at William Paterson University on May 2, sponsored by Abram Kartch. Dr. Andrew Shankman, associate professor of history at Rutgers University, presented his research on Thomas Jefferson and American democracy. Students wrote essays that demonstrated their understanding of the role Jefferson played in American history and how his influence is evident today. Richard Kearney of the David and Lorraine Cheng Library at WPU presented the awards to first-place winner Joseph Belmonte, and honorable mentions to Samantha Serrano and Maria Guerra. Two $1,000 scholarships have been awarded in the memory of Dr. Richard J. Malanowski, the former Superintendent of Schools for the Bayonne school district. Dr. Malanowski led the district from 1993 until his sudden death on June 23, 2000.

Molly Massarelli and Reema Patel were selected as the recipients of this prestigious award as a result of a competitive application and selection process. Both students are members of the Bayonne High School Class of 2012. Massarelli and Patel exemplified leadership, service, and character throughout their high school careers, just as Malanowski exemplified these traits in his educational career.

Dr. Malanowski served as superintendent for seven years. He is remembered by friends and coworkers as hardworking and dedicated to the children of the Bayonne school system. For five years, Dr. Malanowski served as a member of the 15-member State Board of Examiners Panel, which deals with various administrative aspects of education. He was appointed chairman of this highly-respected body the week before his death.

Malanowski Scholarship awarded to Bayonne students

During his tenure as Superintendent of Schools, the Bayonne school system was ranked by the state among the top 25 in technology for four consecutive years. Bayonne High School, Midtown Community School, and P.S. No. 14 (now Nicholas Oresko School) were each selected as Star Schools by the N.J. Department of Education, and several programs as BHS received Best Practice Awards during his tenure. Midtown Community School was named as a recipient of the National Blue Ribbon School Award and Bayonne High School was a state finalist in this process.

Carolyn Malanowski, the late superintendent’s daughter and a guidance counselor at Lincoln Community School, chairs the Dr. Richard J. Malanowski Scholarship Committee. Several universities and colleges have announced that many students from Bayonne recently graduated from their undergraduate and graduate programs.

Fairleigh Dickinson University’s College at Florham has announced that Alejandro Perez and Charlota Jurcik of Bayonne graduated this past May. At the university’s Metropolitan Campus, the following students received their diplomas as well: Brian Feuer, Clarence Hilliard, Crystal Wharton, Dalila Solorzano, Irenne Gonzalez, Jesus Tolentino, Kelly Alvia, Lawrence Anderson, Robert Mays, Shelahmer De la Cruz, and Stephen Trowbridge.

At the University of New Haven’s graduation ceremony on May 13, Kenneth Bragen received a bachelor of science degree in management of sports industries; and Scott Kazar received a bachelor of science degree in fire science.

Bayonne students Iriny Ekladious and Monica Youssef graduated on May 27 from Cornell University. Ekladious received her bachelor of science degree in biological engineering, and Youssef received her bachelor of science degree in human biology, health, and society.

Hester named to Dean’s List

University of Scranton names Bayonne students to Dean’s List

At Saint Mary’s College in Notre Dame, Ind., Megan Hester of Bayonne was named to the Dean’s List for the spring 2012 semester. Hester is the daughter of Denna and John Hester.

To earn academic honors at Saint Mary’s, students must achieve a grade point average of at least 3.6 on a 4.0 scale, have at least 12 graded credit The University of Scranton has announced its Dean’s List for the 2012 spring semester. The Dean’s List rechours, no incompletes, and no grades lower than a C. ognized students for academic excellence, and includes students who have a grade point average of 3.5 or higher and a minimum number of credit hours. The students from Bayonne who were included on the Dean’s List are as follows: Joseph Ballance, senior, finance major in the Kania School of Management; Jennifer Deptula, sophomore, counseling and human services major in the Panuska College of Professional Studies; and Catherine Sangi, sophomore, counseling and human services major in the Panuska College of Professional Studies.

The University of Scranton is a Jesuit university located in northeast Pennsylvania.

OSPREY VISITS – Recently an osprey landed on one of the three osprey platforms built by Bayonne High School and Woodrow Wilson students. The nests were placed by the students on March 28. The osprey project was sponsored by the Bayonne Golf Club, with additional support from PSE&G and the SCHOLARSHIP WINNER – At its June 13 meeting, the Conserve Wildlife Federation.

SCIENCE PROJECT – Students at the Bayonne Head Start recently worked on a project observing the stages of a butterfly’s life cycle, from the larvae stage to the butterfly stage. Then they released the butterflies into the wild to begin their new lives.

FENCE CONSTRUCTION – Under the director of Greg Cea and John McGuckin, students from the Bayonne High School carpentry program constructed and installed a wooden post fence around the school’s urban garden, located between the ice rink and House Six. Utilizing basic carpentry skills, the students applied these techniques in developing a layout, cost analysis, material requirements, and teamwork to successfully complete the project. Operation Herb Garden was designed to protect the garden dedicated to cultivating herbs, vegetables, and other plant life.

SALUTATORIAN – Chelsea Ramdat was chosen as Henry E. Harris School’s Class of 2012 salutatorian. She has been awarded scholarships to Holy Family Academy, Marist High School, and Hudson Catholic Regional High School. At Henry Harris she was involved in softball, yearbook, art club, the Academic Challenge team, and the Math Olympiad. She will attend HFA in the fall. Her parents are Sewpersaud and Leila Ramdat, and her siblings are Michael and Christina.
