PVAMU has research centers across the campus. These are funded by different funding sources: the Texas A&M System Chancellor Research Initiative (CRI); USDA-NIFA; DoD, NASA, and NSF.

CENTERS

1.

5.

Radiation Institute for Science and Engineering (RaISE)

The RaISE aims to build robust and sophisticated radiation detectors for measuring quantitatively space radiations and their effects on biological specimens to develop safe space travel protocols for humans. Currently, a detector for measuring cosmic ionic radiations is collecting data aboard a Japanese spacecraft (Ten-Koh) launched in October 2018. The Center also carries out fundamental research to explore the use of heavy ions in the treatment of cancer. Experimental and theoretical modeling studies in radiation biology are carried out in collaboration with NASA, Brookhaven National Labs, Loma Linda University Medical Center, Los Alamos National Labs, and space research entities in Germany and Italy.

2.

The Computational Biology Center studies complex biological and biomedical problems with a holistic approach, in sharp contrast to the simplified way of looking at individual components of a system. The Center combines computational modeling and analysis with experimental biology, using state-of-theart techniques, such as machine learning, Big Data analytics, and high-throughput DNA sequencing to explore therapeutic approaches to cancer, Alzheimer’s and Parkinson’s diseases.

6.

Center of Excellence for Communication Systems Technology Research (CECSTR)*

7.

Center of Excellence in Research and Education for Big Military Data Intelligence (CREDIT)

The CECSTR conducts comprehensive research in several aspects of communication systems--wavelets and wavelet transforms, compressed sensing/compressive sampling systems, digital signal processing solutions, image and video signal processing, mixed signal systems, communication control systems and broadband communication systems. It also seeks solutions to the problems that plague satellite and radar-based communication networks.

SECURE Cybersecurity Center of Excellence

The Cybersecurity center is focused on developing novel protocols to ensure cybersecurity in multiple environments—communications and networks, power grid, social networking in virtual space, cloud computing, and video analytics. It is also engaged in developing sensitive techniques for malware and virus detection and elimination. As part of its educational mission, the Center has developed undergraduate and graduate courses in cybersecurity.

3.

Center for Computational Systems Biology (CCSB)

The MACH-III Center is dedicated to enhancing the status of minority populations across the P-20 educational domain with opportunities for training, research, and leadership in STEM and non-STEM fields. The Center provides laboratory training to pre-college students through a demonstration lab that houses sophisticated instruments typically used in research projects.

The CREDIT Center is dedicated to accelerating research in predictive analytics for science and engineering to effectively address and solve many complex problems posed by Big Data. Its mission includes training students to become the next generation of data scientists and engineers. CREDIT’s multidisciplinary team of faculty researchers, research scientists, post-doctoral fellows, and graduate and undergraduate research assistants use state-ofthe-art computing facilities, such as the Deep Learning Lab and the Cloud Computing Lab.

4.

8.

PVAMU Minority Achievement, Creativity, and High Ability (MACH-III) Center

Center for Advancing Innovation in Smart Micro-grid

The Smart Micro-grid Center focusses on developing Micro-grids with enhanced power quality and capabilities of secure and robust data collection and exchange, novel fault detection, and protection so that the future power grid is sustainable, secure, and reliable.

ResearchCAPABILITIES

Center for Energy and Environmental Sustainability (CEES)*

The CEES focuses on research and education in the areas of renewable energy and environmental sustainability. Current research areas include biofuels, energy and environment, and wind energy with focus on innovative technical solutions in the energy arena.

4

*TAMU System Board of Regents-Approved

9.

Center for Radiation Engineering and Science for Space Exploration (CRESSE)

The CRESSE is focused on developing materials and technologies that would keep astronauts and their critical electronic equipment safe from the effects of harmful space radiation. The Center carries out research in the area of developing space radiation detection systems in testbed zones during exposures at particle accelerator facilities and obtaining detailed dosimetry data and particle spectroscopy data for use in prediction of risks of space radiation in environment and health.

10.

Texas Gulf Coast Environmental Data (TEXGED) Center

Thermal Science Research Center (TSRC)

15.

Integrated Food Security Research Center (IFSRC)

16.

Texas Juvenile Crime Prevention Center

The very recently funded IFSRC will focus its research and education efforts to resolve multiple issues that collectively cause food insecurity, especially in Texas. Such issues include poor agricultural production, loss of food grains due to pests and storage deficiencies, poor shelf-life of processed food items, and of cost of production of basic food choices. The Center will work in the areas of nutrition, agricultural production, and renewable agricultural and energy resources.

The TSRC is focused on the design and development of physical models to couple heat transfer measurements and modeling, single-phase and two-phase flow measurements and correlation development, interdisciplinary design and development of enclosed natural convection modeling and measurements, and mixed convection modeling. Research results are of importance to fusion reactions, cooling of electronic components, and other high heat flux applications, such as magnetic fusion plasma-facing components, rocket and propulsion systems.

12.

14.

International Goat Research Center (IGRC)

The CARC, the unit within the College of Agriculture and Human Sciences, carries out multiple research projects in agriculture, natural resources and life sciences. Progress is made in research fronts in animal systems, plant systems, food systems, natural resources and environmental systems, and social systems and allied research.

The IGRC supports research projects on value-added processing, food safety, and nutrition for the CARC focusing on physiochemical characterization of goat meat and milk products and fruits and vegetables, product development, sensory and rheological modeling, dairy technology and chemistry, food flavors, post-harvest storage and preservation, and functional food properties and structure-functionality relationships in food proteins and lipid complexes.

The TEXGED Center collects data from space through NASA for predicting environmental changes in the region and for developing a methodology for ecosystem risk assessment. The Center also uses remote sensing data in detecting the sea surface temperature in the Gulf of Mexico to study its impact on biological activities. The TEXGED Center aims at collecting and analyzing data regarding environmental problems such as alteration and loss of habitats, water pollution, air pollution, flooding and hurricanes, climatic changes and degradation and loss of green spaces.

11.

13.

Cooperative Agricultural Research Center (CARC)*

The Center is engaged in research in the areas of juvenile crime and delinquency. It not only develops programs, policies, and strategies to address those social problems but also assists communities and governmental agencies in their implementation. The Center plays a pivotal role in training professionals in the areas of criminal justice and social service.

Future Aerospace Science and Technology (FAST) Center

The FAST Center is dedicated to the development, processing, and characterization of lightweight and high-temperature structural materials and nanomaterials with emphasis on research, education, and technology transfer. Research activities include the processing, characterization, and environmental simulation of nanocomposites for use in both military and civilian applications.
