MESSAGE FROM THE VICE PRESIDENT

As Vice President for the Division of Research and Innovation at Prairie View A&M University (PVAMU), it is my great pleasure to share with you the 2020-21 (FY21) Year in Review. This report showcases the key initiatives and accomplishments related to research and innovation. I am grateful for people like you — the talented and dedicated members of our community. You continually strive to push boundaries, create knowledge, and elevate our mission to improve lives in service for the greater good. As you will read in the pages ahead, PVAMU faculty, staff, students, and alumni have demonstrated remarkable resolve to persevere through the pandemic. I am committed to elevating Prairie View A&M's research and innovation enterprise in becoming an emerging research institution. By nurturing vibrant research and innovation ecosystems at PVAMU and building collaborations and partnerships with external partners, we will elevate, transform and impact our global communities.

The showcased achievements— driven by our bold researchers, innovators, and entrepreneurs— are a testament to PVAMU’s commitment to excellence and relevance in teaching, research, and service that addresses issues and challenges affecting the diverse ethnic and socioeconomic population of Texas and the larger society, including the global arena. Prairie View A&M University embraces this vision as researchers across campus work together to advance knowledge, solve challenging societal problems, create new products and services that enhance the quality of life, and support students and postdoctoral fellows in research and training. Academic research requires the support of many, including the federal government and industry partners. As a credit to our altruistic staff, innovative faculty, and strong external collaborations, PVAMU has conducted a significant volume of research. As the Vice President for Research & Innovation, I am grateful for the opportunity to continue to work with faculty, staff, and students across - all three campuses – driven to impact society for the greater good. STRATEGIC PLANNING 5-YEAR STRATEGY ON THE RISE

tion. Starting from day one, he set out on his mission to elevate the research and innovation enterprise at PVAMU. Preparing and positioning this historic land-grant university to become an emerging research institution is the focus of Vice President Rajan’s five-year strategic plan for the university.

After restructuring the Division of Research & Innovation and relocating all the services and offices in one building, Rajan commenced executing the next phase of his elevation plan. Beginning in the fiscal year 2021, the primary goal for Prairie View A&M is to earn a Carnegie Classification® as a Research 2 doctoral-granting institution. The Carnegie Commission on Higher Education developed a classification of colleges and universities in 1970. The first two categories include only institutions that awarded at least 20 research/scholarship doctoral degrees and had at least $5 million in total research expenditures (as reported through the National Science Foundation (NSF).

For a teaching university to elevate to an R2 status, the university must increase its doctoral degree offerings, significantly expand its research portfolio—particularly research expenditures—and Intellectual Property (IP) portfolio; create and cultivate a culture of innovation and entrepreneurship across campus. An augmented research profile for PVAMU will include adding more research centers and institutes and sustaining and expanding faculty, staff, and student support programs. Achieving these goals continues to be a collaborative, multi-campus process that includes faculty, staff, and student involvement at every phase. R&I led an initial strategic planning summit to collect as much data as possible. The feedback proved to be a great step forward. The response from the campus community was tremendous. Focus sessions were held separately for faculty, research leaders, students, and administrators. Their inputs will be used to shape the next 5-year strategic plan. And thanks to the dedication of the R&I team, PVAMU administration, faculty, researchers, and staff, and their hard work in the last two years, Rajan reports the university has significantly improved its research expenditures and doctoral awards. This achievement is significant. It demonstrates the university is achieving these targets significantly earlier than envisioned. Vice President Rajan’s vision was to achieve this category in five to six years. However, PVAMU will achieve this goal earlier than planned. This distinction will significantly add to the visibility of Prairie View A&M University and the research caliber faculty undertake on our campus.

PATH TO DOCTORAL R2 RANKING

Under the leadership of President Ruth Simmons, PVAMU has been making great strides on many fronts, elevating the research profile is one of the key aspects. Vice President Rajan is committed to raising PVAMU's research and innovation enterprise to become an emerging research institution. The Carnegie Commission on Higher Education and its Carnegie Classification® is the leading framework for recognizing and describing institutional standing concerning research activities and doctoral/Ph.D. graduates. Currently, PVAMU is ranked as an "M1: Master's Colleges & Universities: Larger Programs”. Prairie View A&M University’s path to becoming an emerging research institution aligns with the high standards of Carnegie. Institutional rankings are important in higher education to demonstrate the quality of the teaching, learning, and research activities and opportunities provided. This, in turn, attracts more students and faculty, and more support for the university. PVAMU aspires to be elevated from the M1: Master's Colleges & Universities: Larger Programs ranking to an R2: Doctoral Universities – High research activity institution ranking. It requires a minimum research expenditure of $5M and awarding of at least 20 research/scholarship doctoral degrees during the update year. PVAMU's research expenditures have significantly surpassed one of the two criteria of $5M minimum requirement to become a Higher Research Activity (R2) institution. The R&I has surpassed the annual research expenditures of $20M. During the last two years, the Division of Research & Innovation has made great investments and initiatives, which have yielded substantial results. Some improvements include enhanced services to principal investigators; the research administration processes and management; effective submission of grant proposals; initiating an Office of Research Advancement (ORA); enhancing doctoral student, engagement and support; and demonstration of leadership in restricted research awards, etc. PVAMU proposals have doubled in the last two years. The Office of Research Advancement provided faculty training for grantsmanship. Office of Sponsored Programs and Research Compliance improved internal processes to effectively support the research community. R&I provided significant support for graduate students through our Faculty-Research & Innovation for Scholarly Excellence (RISE) graduate program. All of these factors have significantly assisted in increasing our research stature

towards the Carnegie ranking. The proposals and the amounts requested have doubled since 2018 from 150 proposals at $100M to 300 proposals and at $200M, with a steady increase in funded awards from 58 to 83 awards per year. The restricted research awards have more than doubled since 2018 from $8.5M to $19.2M in 2021. The R&I has surpassed the annual research expenditures of $20M. These are the factors that accelerated us to accomplish the goal in record time. Our unified efforts are significantly thrusting us towards reaching ranking/category sooner than planned. The research rankings represent the quality of the universities teaching, research and service missions. They also serve as a good reflection of how well PVAMU compares with peer institutions, among other HBCUs. We will continue to elevate and progress to be the best HBCU in the nation.

VISION, MISSION, AND CORE VALUES ELEVATING TO GREATER HEIGHTS Vice President Rajan instituted six core values that drive the team's commitment to service. R&I believes in maintaining a positive and productive working culture. As we collectively strive to elevate PVAMU's research and innovation, we do so by upholding the following six core values.

Under Vice President Rajan’s leadership, the Division of Research & Innovation (R&I) staff collaboratively developed the CORE values as the guiding principles for the R&I team and an inspirational and bold Vision to elevate the university to the next level of preeminence. R&I’s Core Values and Vision helped the staff to remain steadfast through the challenges faced last year, including the a global pandemic, remote operation, a cyber-incident, and an unprecedented historic, winter storm.


While Prairie View A&M University (PVAMU) championed through multiple obstacles, R&I remained committed to providing excellent service to faculty, staff, and students. Dedication to our core values motivated the team to put those words into practice in their daily operations. The core values serve as an unwavering reminder of the right path to the fulfillment of the vision. The R&I vision statement aligns with that of the university. R&I leadership and services are integral to the success of elevating Prairie View A&M to a designation as a high-research activity, doctoral-granting institution. We are encouraged by the trending increases in research proposal submission and grant awards secured by the research community.

CONFRONTING COVID-19

WHILE DELIVERING UNRIVALED SERVICE

The Division of Research & Innovation (R&I) had a quick and diversified response to the COVID-19 pandemic. While the global pandemic caused upheaval to many of us and changed how we live our daily lives at home, work, and on the university campus, we were committed to ensuring that our core research ++++++++++++++++++ functions continued.

oped campus protocols aligned with federal and state requirements to reduce the number of individuals gathered in research labs. We created protocols for faculty researchers to access laboratories on a rotational basis so that that the labs could remain open and the research could continue. We found ways to research off-campus, wherever possible. In addition, the several offices within the Division of Research & Innovation adapted and seamlessly transitioned into remote work adapting to the virtual world while maintaining close interactions through digital platforms such as Microsoft Teams. R&I also confronted COVID-19 by showing its strength as a research community. Vice President Magesh Rajan aimed to directly address the COVID-19 challenges and their implications to the university research community. The resulting research and scholarly articles published about this uncommon time were significant in that they responded to the global challenges and cemented PVAMU as a research entity capable of contributing significantly to important and timely conversations of import. During this unforeseen time, COVID-19 challenged humanity and society globally and personally, including affecting Prairie View A&M University faculty, staff, and students. Despite some personal losses and other complex outcomes of the pandemic, the R&I team demonstrated tremendous resilience. By having faith in one another, the team continued to deliver unrivaled service to the campus community.

Recognizing the need for such an infrastructure for the faculty, Vice President Rajan has developed and launched several initiatives this year to support faculty, students, and research scholars to advance their research and innovation. The initiatives included support for priority research areas, junior faculty, STEM areas, humanities, and social sciences, COVID19 research and innovation, graduate research fellows, and undergraduate student research.

VPRI RAPID RESEARCH FUNDING PROGRAM The Rapid-Response Grant Program (RAPID) supports research studies to help understand and address the current complex national needs and challenges. These RAPID grants are generally for a limited time and intended to encourage faculty to broaden their research areas or jump-start a new research area. This year the major RAPID research themes included Race, Inequality, and Social Justice: Studies

focused on race inequalities, social justice, recent national events, and activities related to race inequalities; COVID-19 Research: Scientific or technology-oriented non-medical research to address or mitigate COVID-19 risks and related issues; COVID-19 Impact Studies: Research studies focused on understanding the impact of COVID-19 or the resultant economic stress on African-American communities; Interdisciplinary Research: Interdisciplinary topics related to one or more of the major themes listed above. VIRTUAL WORLD W E P U S H E D F O R WA R D As the Division of Research & Innovation (R&I) team witnessed the COVID-19 situation looming on the horizon, we were able to move quickly and seamlessly to a virtual workspace. The R&I was an early adopter for the new Microsoft technology Teams. Teams is a workspace platform for chat and videoconferencing. Through a collaborative effort with the Web Services Department, R&I completed Microsoft Teams training. This proactive decision to embrace new and innovative technology eventually proved to be an advantage in the wake of the COVID-19 pandemic. Using technologies, such as Microsoft Teams and Zoom, we seamlessly maintained effective communication within the Division and with our campus and external collaborators.

Through virtual platforms, we conducted all of our operations and service, especially

o The weekly Research & Innovation Training Institute (RITI) o Research Data Blitz o Monthly Research Compliance Meetings, and o Hiring of New Staff o Monthly Team Socials and Games The enhanced tracking of attendance and engagement proved to be an unexpected benefit. During the virtual world, R&I witnessed more faculty, staff, and student participation, especially in seminars and workshops, compared to in-person offerings. Continuation of such virtual or hybrid offerings will become the norm of the future. By fully embracing the available technology and undergoing training, we incorporated the new platforms into our daily office functions. Our virtual morning greetings often spurred conversations and interactions that may not have been possible if we were in physical proximity to one another. We continued to promote the mantra "One Team, One Dream." Although physically separated, technology allowed us to maintain a connection with one

We realized that being in this virtual world provided opportunities for creativity for our Monthly Social as well. Each month, one of the six units within the Division would volunteer to host the social. The hosts were tasked with developing an innovative, fun delivery of professional development and team-building activities. For many, these activities seemed to meet the inherent need for human interaction. The global pandemic disrupted the status quo and could have caused major upheavals within our Division. But with a previously-established path and with goals and vision as motivation, the R&I team knew it could persevere. It did! We relied on each other--and our proven protocols--forged ahead in a virtual workspace without disrupting our service and commitment to research and innovation at PVAMU.

The Year 2020-21 provided multiple examples of the strength and resilience of the R&I team. For a significant time this year, the Division of R&I was severely understaffed due to vacancies and several retirements that could not be filled due to a hiring freeze and budget reductions. Several R&I staff members, including the Vice President, absorbed the duties of multiple vacant positions. Despite the challenges and a tremendous amount of hard work, we met deadlines and achieved or exceeded our goals through teamwork and perseverance. The Division of R&I recruited nearly a dozen new employees within this fiscal year. With the number and diversity of new staff, we have the look of a new team. The newly hired staff equated to almost half of the R&I division. They are already contributing significantly to the service quality and showing their leadership acumen. Our existing staff is adapting to all the fresh approaches being contributed to the office culture and environment. With new staff also comes a new and exciting exchange of ideas. Team building has been a critical response to meeting the challenges of blending staff head-on. Throughout the work-from-home period, R&I continued to place priority on its "One Team, One Dream" mantra by maintaining the monthly socials. While we moved to a virtual workspace because of a worldwide health catastrophe, we needed to maintain connections with staff. Through the monthly socials, we remained current on university happenings, conducted team-building initiatives, and allowed ourselves to interact in a friendly and supportive environment. As we look around the Division of Research & Innovation, it is clear to see the tremendous growth and advancement the team has made.

Three of our valued staff members celebrated moving into retirement this year. Lois Burg, Donna Broussard, and Kathy Richardson all served in the Office of Sponsored Programs. Lois Burg served as a Program Specialist, Donna Broussard served as a Project Administrator, and Kathy Richardson served as a Financial Accountant. Their extended years of service demonstrate their commitment to the continued success of the R&I Division and PVAMU. It is very gratifying to witness experienced professionals committed to the vision of R&I conclude their long service to the university. Their decades-long commitment and service to the faculty, staff, and students have certainly helped to elevate PVAMU. The retirees were recognized and honored through a retirement celebration party.

Each summer, the Division of Research & Innovation (R&I) hosts a staff retreat. A staff retreat is a great way to boost employee morale and strengthen relationships across the teams in the division. This year Vice President Rajan, supported the day-long 2021 R&I Retreat at an off-campus venue. It allowed the team a chance to take a step back from the day-to-day work, spend time building towards the bigger picture, rejuvenate, and get excited around a united mission of the Division while having fun and building bonds between the team members. This year’s retreat was particularly important. Vice President Rajan set the expectation for the day: to be FUN. He presented what the team had accomplished the previous year, despite historic challenges. The Division remained true to its core values, vision, and goals and rose to the challenge of serving PVAMU faculty, researchers, and students. The retreat provided an opportunity for R&I leadership and each of the area heads to share information on challenges and accomplishments, and changes during the last year. The leadership also shared plans and goals for the next fiscal year.

The planning+committee ++++++++++++++++++++ selected Birkman because of its comprehensive assessment tools to identify strengths, ++++moti+++++++++++++++++ vators, behaviors, and interests of R&I staff. The Birkman method helps an individual to make+++++++++++++++

informed decisions about how one interacts with others. Throughout the exercises, Birkman provided insight on tools to help team members work in accord with others with different personalities, address situations that may arise within a team setting or in daily work situations, and personal coping skills in times of stress. While prior retreats have been highly interactive and physically and mentally challenging, this one involved more critical thinking and higher-level engagement. Considering our current, unique set of circumstances, the retreat proved to be well-paced in a comfortable physical environment. Even with lots of interaction with the entire team, there were opportunities for small group engagement and self-reflection. Overall, the R&I Staff Retreat was a great success and well appreciated by the staff.


A NEW PANTHER RISE PRISE PROGRAM EXPANDING RESEARCH COLLABORATIONS AND NETWORK Prairie View A&M University (PVAMU) and Texas A&M University (TAMU) partnered together in a new way to help solve some of our society’s complex challenges. The two institutions set aside $300,000 to support 30 faculty members to collaborate, to try and solve identified problems in the world.

Division of Research and Innovation initiated the Panther Research and Innovation for Scholarly Excellence (Panther RISE) grant program that supported 30 faculty researchers from the two institutions +++++++++++++++ inter-institutional research projects. The Division of Research & Innovation (R&I) partnered with the Office +++++++++++++++ of Academic Affairs and launched the initiative in Fall 2020. +++++++++++++++

While the Year 2020 proved to be a time of awakening for the world, it also became a call to action for several faculty researchers at Prairie View A&M University (PVAMU). From civil unrest and racial injustices, the ongoing COVID19 global pandemic to economic hardships and virtual education. America faced waves of crises that paralyzed many. However, several PVAMU researchers saw these challenges as unique opportunities for them to propose solutions. Vice President Magesh Rajan understood the need to address these matters quickly and supported the faculty’s desire to explore solutions for evolving challenges. So, the Division of Research & Innovation launched new funding initiatives to support researchers looking to address pressing issues with a short turnaround time: the Rapid-Response Grant Program (RAPID) and the Faculty-Research and Innovation Success and Excellence (Faculty-RISE). The RAPID program supports research studies to help understand and address complex national needs and challenges. RAPID grants are generally for a limited time. This grant program encourages PVAMU faculty, research staff, and doctoral students from all disciplines to broaden their research or jump-start new research in relevant areas to current national needs. It helps mobilize scholarly researchers and, particularly, deepen understanding and develop ways to respond to the recent national challenges. The RAPID Program funded research projects based on university priorities and societal needs. During the first two years of the RAPID program, the Division for Research & Innovation funded over 40 research and innovation projects to faculty researchers with a $3,000 - $5,000 funding support. Because many federal

funding agencies require preliminary data to show the feasibility of the proposed research, the RAPID grant serves as an essential means to collect needed data to successfully pursue larger external funding.

VPRI GRADUATE AND UNDERGRADUATE RISE Vice President Rajan remains committed to fostering and growing the research and innovation enterprise for faculty and students across all Prairie View A&M University (PVAMU) disciplines. In the last fiscal year, the Division of Research & Innovation (R&I) launched the Faculty Research & Innovation for Scholarly Excellence (RISE) for Undergraduate and Graduate programs. Faculty-RISE is rooted in the firm belief at the student level. The programs enable faculty researchers to expand and sustain their research through external grants and contracts while mentoring students to become the next generation of experts. Each successful faculty applicant received funding support of $5,000 for undergraduate research; and $10,000 for graduate research. These grants supported more than 100 students, as well as faculty-mentored research and innovation activities to flourish.

When it comes to strategic partnerships and expanding the service reach of Prairie View A&M, the university has done exceptionally well building upon our existing partnerships, while establishing new and more diverse commitments.

partnerships with large corporations, smallscale startup companies, and various industry organizations looking to commercialize our intellectual property and provide research and development opportunities for faculty and students to be engaged in startup entrepreneurship process. The collaborations are numerous, diverse, and effective. Each opportunity elevates Prairie View A&M’s purview and its visibility from the Greater Houston area and Texas, and across the nation and internationally.

R&I and ICEED capitalized on the interests from industries in the agricultural and human sciences (College of Agriculture), executing several MOU’s Master Research Agreements, etc. These are significant accomplishments that will provide avenues for commercialization, research funding, and growing agricultural capabilities for the college, university, and the region, especially growing the agricultural intellectual property (IP) portfolio of PVAMU, Texas Land Grant Institution.

In 2021, R&I established new partnerships with the following organizations:

INNOVATION DRIVES ECONOMIC DEVELOPMENT

Innovation Drives Economic Development! That is the motto for PVAMU R&I’s Innovation-Economic Development. The focus begins with the campus and our surrounding communities, where the three campuses reside: Waller County, Northwest Houston, and the Texas Medical Center— the most prominent medical city in the world. The Northwest Houston corridor, where PVAMU has a powerful economic impact, encompasses various industries—farming and agriculture, energy industry, manufacturing, medical care, and space/NASA. The Division of Research & Innovation commissioned an Economic Development Advisory Group (EDAG) to harness community, corporate, and research interests and capitalize on existing industry connections. The EDAG embodies community leaders, entrepreneurs, educators, and local government leaders. The members are keenly aware PVAMU employs hundreds of staff and faculty members and has thousands of alumni in integral parts of communities across the Houston metropolitan area. Therefore, the Group serves a pivotal role in providing significant advice to the Vice President of Research & Innovation, Magesh Rajan, on ensuring that PVAMU remains and expands its role as an influential and competitive leader. INNOVATION DRIVES ECONOMIC DEVELOPMENT

For Vice President Magesh Rajan the pursuit of the IEP distinction aligns with the university's R2 classification goal and the growing research and innovation enterprise. The innovations and discoveries by PVAMU faculty have a significant impact on industries and the business region, community development, and individual lives. Rebecca Faison, Ph.D., ICEED's Director of Innovation-Economic Development, is leading this IEP designation process along with Vice President Rajan. The task involves a very rigorous assessment of campus stakeholders, regional engagement, and an extensive economic prosperity plan to APLU. Faison said this IEP designation will further develop and expand PVAMU's talent and workforce development; its innovation, entrepreneurship, and technology-based economic development. As a result of achieving this goal, Prairie View A&M will maximize the impact of its research and innovation on the greater Houston area and Southeast Texas economy and its diverse communities through our public service, outreach, extension, and community engagement. The process involves tremendous amounts of data collection, surveying, and evaluation. PVAMU is currently in a start-up cohort with 38 other universities. But the path to obtaining the designation is tedious. Just over 77 institutions have the IEP distinction in North America. The reward for the hard work required to earn the IEP title, Rajan said, is tremendous visibility to the university and impact on faculty and student recruitment, and a great boost for our Office of Innovation and Economic Development.


PANTHERS INVENT

WHERE IDEAS BECOME REALITY The spirit of innovation is alive and thriving among Prairie View A&M University (PVAMU) students. With more than 9,000 undergraduate and graduate students enrolled, many also operate their businesses while enrolled full-time. This duality is well known by Vice President Magesh Rajan. He became an entrepreneur while in graduate school and has established multiple successful tech companies during his career. To capitalize on this shared passion for business, the Division of Research & Innovation incorporated student innovation and entrepreneurship as a critical aspect of the new office for innovation. Since innovation and entrepreneurship are his passion, the vice president aimed to bring the rich experiences that entrepreneurship offers to PVAMU students. He formed PVAMU’s new Office of Innovation (Entrepreneurship) to serve as the conduit for his plan for putting together multiple competition events where students from different agreement majors would be placed on teams to collaborate and develop possible ideas to address numerous challenges.

The Office of Innovation staff teamed up with Texas A&M University (TAMU) and Sandia National Laboratories to plan for the first student innovation competition named "Panthers Invent." TAMU College of Engineering has hosted its version of the Sandia competition for several years, so they partnered with PVAMU and its Center for Innovation, Commercialization, Entrepreneurship, and Economic Development (ICEED) for this inaugural event on The Hill. This innovation competition is a three-day challenge, based on a proven format used at universities around the country, where interested students are given real-life design needs statements and then compete for the best product/solution, including potential commercialization of that solution via a startup company. The Office of Innovation debuted its services and research undertakings during Spring 2021 Research & Innovation Week when it held its inaugural Innovation Day. The virtual event proved to be a good trial for a future larger-scale student innovation experience. By mid-summer, the idea of a student competition quickly became a reality.

Faculty Research Conference Day | 104 Participants The Faculty Research Conference

Day showcased and celebrated the outstanding achievements of our dedicated faculty. 34 faculty members recommended by their department heads from PVAMU's eight colleges and schools presented their research and scholarly accomplishments. Their projects focused on crucial topics like the impact of discrimination on college students' persistence, postCOVID-19 impact on higher education, comparative effectiveness reviews of nursing care, machine-learning, and cloud computing for daylighting simulations.

Pre-pandemic, the Undergraduate Research Day would be a week-long event. The students would deliver oral and poster presentations on the applied solutions, disruptive ideas, and the real-world impact of faculty and student research. Because of COVID19, R&I pivoted to a virtual platform the entire week featuring both undergraduate and graduate research.

Graduate Research Day | 172 Participants The

shift to virtual teaching, learning, and researching became a proving ground for Prairie View A&M graduate students. For Graduate Research Day, masters and doctoral students demonstrated their dedication and undauntedness to delivering their research to the campus community. Each capitalized on the virtual presentation format to expose their research to a larger research community. The research day also provided an opportunity for graduate researchers to get a broader sense of the depth and diversity of research conducted on the campus.

Innovation Day | 54 Participants The inaugural Innovation Day featured a variety of business and entrepreneurial leaders who offered a series of motivational, informative, and inspiring presentations. New ICEED Executive Director Bobby Melvin hosted the full day of Innovation, Commercialization, Entrepreneurship, and Economic related topics. Innovation Day featured Henri Nayakarundi as the keynote speaker. The Rwandan computer scientist has a passion for social entrepreneurship, mainly focused on the green sector. He launched the African Renewable Energy Distributor (ARED) in 2013. During his presentation, Nayakarundi described his journey to build and grow his innovative green business and shared some significant problems and challenges minority entrepreneurs are facing. The day also included a panel discussion by community economic development officials. Each panelist described exciting projects within their respective jurisdictions and shared details on their cooperative partnerships, including with one another and with the Prairie View A&M, which has broadened the university's impact and economic development community. Lastly, PVAMU innovators Innovation showcased some best practices and discussed intellectual property services.

The Divison experienced challenges to keep the website updated with current articles about our researchers’ achievements; our social media platforms lagged on publicizing events, and print media often was placed on the back burner. Vice President Rajan reimagined the use of staff in the Office of Marketing and Communications (OMC) to manage R&I’s needs more proficiently. He provided supplementary staffing support to assist the major projects in research branding and marketing. It helped the team to focus on enhancing the research communications. This strategy enabled the team to complete multiple print and digital projects in an efficient and timely manner. In the past year, R&I social media engagement increased by 249 percent, current articles on researchers and funding are visible on both the PVAMU landing page and on the R&I sites. Several print documents have been completed, including the 2020 Year in Review magazine, and the Undergraduate and Graduate Research booklets. The OMC website is a hub of information for all things related to research and innovation. The site features the latest research news and easier access to social media. We have included videos about researchers and on-demand access to the Research & Innovation Training Institute (RITI) and the Research Data Blitz (RDB) as well. The updated site includes a current calendar of events, publications, and an invitation to connect with R&I about new research, innovation, various scholarly issues, and student success activities.

Before creating the Office of Research Advancement (ORA) in January 2020, seeking out large-scale external funding was a haphazard endeavor, left solely to researchers. With support from ORA, there is now a strategic approach to seeking more expansive funds, matching researchers to funding, and providing support throughout the proposal development process. As a result of this and other strategic efforts, we saw a notable change in the number and quality of research proposals submitted for external funding. The ORA team marketed its services by presenting a training session on the Research & Innovation Training Institute (RITI). ORA also improved delivery of the annual summer grant writing training by removing the barriers to access and providing it on a virtual platform. The Summer Workshop in Grantwriting (SWinG) provided an interactive format for learning current proposal submission information. Research proposal development, including editing, timeline development, and ensuring the proposal meets the funder’s requirements, ORA has other points of pride to be acknowledged for the 2021 fiscal year. ORA staff often say, “We exist to assist.”

THE OSP IS DEDICATED TO THE DIVISION OF RESEARCH AND INNOVATION TO ELEVATE PVAMU RESEARCH ENTERPRISES. OSP has made tremendous strides in Fiscal Year 2020. Their team presented training in several settings, including the Virtual Research & Innovation Training Institute (RITI) program, about reintroducing the Office of Sponsored Programs vision and services. Principal Investigators can now associate a grants management function with a specific program administrator. In addition, the proposal administrators are signed to specific colleges to provide proposal submission assistance. The data shows there has been significant improvement and an increase in the proposal submission and awards management.

STRENGTHENING INFRASTRUCTURE MISSION The Office of Title III Programs (OTP) is committed to supporting PVAMU’s mission to strengthen its overall infrastructure by serving as the central administrative office for effectively managing the Historically Black College and University (HBCU), Historically Black Graduate Institution (HBGI), and Fostering Undergraduate Talent by Unlocking Resources for Education (FUTURE) grant-funded programs. OTP is dedicated to ensuring effective planning, implementation, management, budgetary and administrative oversight, and evaluation and reporting of high-impact activities approved by the university administration. The OTP is committed to ensuring compliance with federal, system, and university regulations as a liaison between PVAMU and the U.S. Department of Education.

The OUR is committed to partnering with the undergraduate research council members and faculty across broad disciplines to plan and implement activities that stimulate and support undergraduate research. ELEVATE PVAMU RESEARCH ENTERPRISE TO BECOME AN EMERGING RESEARCH UNIVERSITY

Undergraduate students at PVAMU typically have limited opportunities to experience the joy of discovery that research brings. However, the Office of Research Advancement Undergraduate Research (ORA-UG) seeks to change that by providing faculty/staff mentors with funds to engage students in research experiences. During the last year, ORA-UG transitioned its operation to a virtual platform while continuing to expose students to the wonder of research through the Faculty-Research & Innovation for Scholarly Excellence (Faculty-RISE) program—one of Vice President Magesh Rajan's research initiatives. The ORA-UG worked cooperatively with the Undergraduate Research Council to promote and provide ongoing opportunities for the faculty/staff-mentored undergraduate research. The university completed master research collaboration agreements with five agriculture-related companies. •

These are significant partnerships for Prairie View A&M, given the fact that agriculture is in our name and part of the university’s founding as a land-grant institution. Each agreement holds a two-fold benefit: providing a commercialization outlet for the research results and continued additional research money for the College of Ag to fund new equipment and new research on plant varieties. The primary focus of all the companies is to increase the agriculture capabilities of our region. The study may include certain plants native to Texas and perhaps improving how they are grown; other plants either traditionally have not been grown in Texas or are currently being grown in Texas but in small amounts. PVAMU is pursuing vehicles for research to improve those plants that can grow better, produce greater yields, and have better sustainability within the Texas agricultural area.

The ICCE initiative will cultivate the entrepreneurial landscape, support the Texas A&M University Systems’ Chancellor’s Research Initiative and provide essential tools required by entrepreneurs and innovators to commercialize their technologies. The project will strengthen the socio-economic well-being of the cities of Prairie View, Waller, and Hempstead, as well as the Northwest Houston Corridor. The Innovation Corridor include four zones:

 Commercial Real Estate The development will provide students with opportunities while offering amenities that support the broader community. The Innovation Corridor campus gateway development will facilitate and encourage connections between faculty, staff, students, and the community.
