Acknowledgement At first, I’d like to thank Leo Burnett, India, for adding an apple like me to their basket & giving me a fruitful opportunity to learn the experience of an advertising agency. I’d like to thank Mr Rohan Kumar, for (Creative Apple, Leo Burnett, Delhi NCR) for giving me the creative pencil to scribble my ideas all over the walls of leo burnett vvand helping me turn into a ripe and crispy apple. Now when I’m ripe and ready I can put on my Leo Burnett glasses and enter the farm market in/with great confidence. I'd also like to thank my fellow apples Prachi & Manisha for always being with me and making my days comfortable. At last I’d like to thank the one who sowed the seed and nurtured the plant for the fruit, my course coordinator and faculty mentor Mr Mohd. Shadab Sami. I hope I’ve undergone an intensive training and I’m ripe enough for the industry now.

Abstract I never thought apples would fascinate me so much and I only realised it when I made it into Leo burnett. This report is a compilation of my life at the leo burnett where i worked as an art intern between so many creative apples for 8 weeks to explore more in the areas of advertising. When I put on my glasses on the very first day I had mixed feelings, and scribbles in my head. I wanted to understand how is the working atmosphere in an advertising company, how does the company work, who are the people who run the company, what different roles do people have, how to deal with people while working in a team, How does the design strategy and process works? Apart from this, I wanted to improve my communication skills, build new network, learn new processes and techniques. After spending 8 weeks there I was able to learn most of the things I thought of and have compiled them in this document.

Thinking Philosophy Everything that matters for their business begins and ends with two things: People & their behaviour. In this competetive world of marketing and advertising, static thoughts like directly promoting a product will be a fail. Hence to keep up with the market and build a connect with the consumers and brands LeoBurnett has adopted a philosophy HUMANKIND. It is more than a philosphy, it is a strategic framework. This means pioneering idea pplatforms that guide the interaction of a brand’s purpose with people acrossmultiple touchpoints and experiences. Idea platform open up a brand’s oportunity to new forms of engagement and product innovation. Keeping in mind this philosophy, a balanced business strategy will have better future growth, Better creation strategy will have better work and better communication strategy will have better reputation.

Project Flow PITCH: I was fortunate enough that during my internship period to work on three pitches for different brands and summits which is rare for interns. The whole starts process starts with knowing about the pitch. In some pitches the clients themselves approach and ask us to create a particular campaign. Some pitches are are open to some selected agencies. Some pitches are like tenders, they are open to everyone and anyone can present their inputs in them. These are generally Government projects or summits etc. The project details are generally received by the Business heads and the head of strategy. If the budget suits the client they go for the deal. The team working then has to keep in mind the budget while creating the ads especially the TVC and short films. According to the budget they then find the perfect actors for the film and then finally send it for the production.

Design process The strategy and planning team looks into the brief and goes for the market study. The whole team including the strategists, Planners, creative directors, art directors, copywriters sit together and brainstorm for ideas to work on the campaign. Once the idea is decided it is approved by the Executive Creative Directors, and the head of Planning. After this the creative part is ready to roll out. The whole process starts with getting the business in hand. For the ongoing and regular work, The client servicing team which had the brand associates would get in touch with the clients and get the details of the task that has to be done. Being an advertising agency, the major work that came up was developing various ads and collaterals. The client servicing team would then pass this information for the creative team which had copywriters and art directors. The copywriters understand the brief and come up with good catchy content. This is then passed to the art directors who then make the creative as per the guidelines and the content. For the films & the scripts are discussed as per the budget Once the creatives are ready, they are sent to the client. After approval the creatives are sent to the studio where the graphic designers create high resolution files that are to be sent for printing. Once the files are made these are brought back to the creative team for approval. After the final approval the files are sent to the client.

Departments It’s not a single person’s job to make the company reach the heights. There’s a team that works together and make the orchard. Each department is eqaully important and has equal ocntribution for the success of the company. Here are the various departments that keeps the company binded:

HR

Admin

Their inbox is full of cv & resume but they make sure they get the most ripe and delicious apples for the company and later offering them a basket of apples. They make sure to keep all the masterminds happy and provide them a peaceful working atmosphere.

Want a cab? Broken Chair? Need stationary? Or a table tennis ball? They’ve got it all! Plus they arrange amazing match screenings with snacks and drinks too.

IT

Imagine a day without internet! Thankfully no, because they provide the apples with all the passwords and keep the systems updated.

Strategy

This department is the mastermind behind the identification and analysis of Company strengths and weaknesses, Personal values of the key implementers (i.e., management and the board), Industry opportunities and threats, Broader societal expectations. They produce fundamental decisions and actions that shape and guide what an organization is, who it serves, what it does, and why it does it, with a focus on the future.

Servicing

This bunch of apples are always seen running all around to get tasks done. They have a special attachment with their Phones and Emails. People from this team are the ones who bring the businesses and maintain them. Their main task is to build client relationships, identify new business opportunities, bridging between the client and the creative team.

Analytics

Yes! Apples can play with number too. This is what this team does for its clients. They translate numbers into plain English. The team analyzes data however required for strategizing using scientific tools. The data can be of the client as well as its competitors in the market. This mainly includes sales figures, market performance, channel performance, social media engagement, etc. This data help companies forecast performance and in turn make better business decisions.

Creative These apples can be found in any corner, at the most unusual places doing the brainstorming. This team comprises of grammarnazis and picassos.

Copy

These apples shower out magical ideas, concepts & words. Once they get the brief from the servicing team, they then start brainstorming on ideas and produce some amazing, eye catchy lines to grab the attention of the audience.

Studio

Art

The ones who rarely move from their desks. One can easily find them in front of huge mac screens toggling between illustrator and photoshop. They are the ones who decide the overall aesthetic of the creative from the layouts to the colors and typography. Also, they spend most of their time searching the stock images.

People have a speed equivalent to that of a machine. The ones who know all the photoshop & illustrator shortcuts. They prepare the final designs because they’re going to be BIG!

Creative Director, Leo Burnett India

My Role I joined Leo Burnett as an Art Direction Intern. I had various goals that I wanted to achieve throughout my tenure. I wanted to understand the functioning of the company, how the work is brought here and how it is processed, how various departments work in an organisation. I wanted to learn how is it working in a professional environment and how it is different from what we have been practicing in college and freelance work, what skills I have and still need to develop according to the professional environment. I wanted to learn how the team manages to work in spite of various difficulties but still holding the teamwork. I focused on creating building a new network and enhance my communication skills. As an Art Director I was supposed to conceptualise and build creatives and sometimes a total new campaign for various existing clients and new pitches as well. Even though being an Art Director I was involved in various other department works such as visualisation and copywriting. I also took part in the brainstorming session with my team. Keeping in mind those, I had to create the desired material. During my tenure I worked on various brands like Fortis, Maaza, India Today and pitches for Airtel, World Food India, J&K Summit. Apart from this I also participated in Facebook Thumbstoppers where I sent my entries for 10 min ad films on behalf of Leo Burnett.

Roll into a creative world of Leo Burnett ...

Airtel Airtel is one of the leading telecom brands in the country. Airtel is credited with pioneering the business strategy of outsourcing all of its business operations except marketing, sales and finance and building the 'minutes factory' model of low cost and high volumes. Airtel has always been into engaging advertising and has been targeting the youth customers of India. They have been using very playful music and compositions that are very grabbing and get on everyone’s mind.

Overview With the introduction of Jio, the sales of other telecom companies have drastically gone down irrespective of the prices they have slashed down. Hence competeing Jio in the market, Airtel wanted the custoners to switch to Airtel, buy new sims and siwtch to 4G.

Aim Airtel aims to get the people either buy Airtel sims or switch from their existing networks to airtel. They feel that in this increasing era of internet world they can taregt people who have still not stepped into 4G world (as per the survey, more than 60% of the population still use feature phones) and introduce them to this world of 4G. This would help them get more customers. For this keeping in mind the customer segment and the problems they face, Airtel provided with some schemes to roll on.

Target Group Though the final goal was to get more customers but through this campaign they majorly wanted to focus on the underpriviliged youth (Age 21-30 Years) who might be living in rural areas or can be migrating to urban areas in search of jobs or for education. Various problems can be targeted and can be worked on those areas.

Schemes Airtel is launching three new offers to cover your smartphone spends and monthly data charges Offer 1: Device insurance for a year on a new smartphone Offer 2: Down-payment at just Rs.2000 & Low EMIs of Rs.1000 (for 6 months) Offer 3: Assured Buyback at 50% after 1 year & Free exchange up to 50% of existing smartphone value (basis the handset type) Along with these offers, Airtel provides some of the best digital entertainment content through Airtel TV app and Airtel Thanks program

Competetion Jio, Vodafone

Briefing idea 1: Waiting for the big moment - The Time is Now Who are we talking to?

We are talking to the featurephone owners below 25 years of age. They have an aspirational mindset and are confident that they will be successful one day. They are constantly looking out for opportunities and when they get one, they don’t let it go. They don’t have any sense of entitlement. Whenever they want to do/buy anything for themselves, they seek a lot of justification and assurance. Whenever they get an opportunity, they seize it.

Behaviour change

They are aware of the infinite interesting possibilities thrown by the world of smartphones but they are not sure when is the right time to own it. They delay the gratification by constantly questioning if they deserve it or if it’s the right time. We want people to believe that their dreams, their ambitions deserve a smartphone. With Airtel covering the associated risk with the smartphone purchase, people should believe that it’s their time to seize the opportunity and live a 4G life.

WAITING FOR THEIR TIME --> THEIR TIME IS NOW Brand platform

Your time is now – seize the opportunity

What is the tone?

Sincere, Re-assuring, Enabling

Briefing idea 2: Preponement – waiting in line is for losers Who are we talking to?

We are talking to the featurephone owners below 25 years of age. They have high aspirations and struggling to be successful. Unlike the previous generation, they don’t want to spend their whole life to get their due share of success. They are impatient, they want everything early, they want it before time, they want it now. They don’t play by the rulebook and thus always ready to change the game. To reach their destination, they are always ready to hustle, jostle and push everything and everybody aside who come in their way. What they might need is a little push, or just a reminder.

Behaviour change

They see people around them owning a smartphone and living a digital life. They want to be part of the exciting world of smartphones but the practical/financial realities come in their way. They constantly keep an eye on the market to stake their claim. Airtel reminds you that you don’t wait for things to happen but you make things happens. With its exciting smartphone offers, you have all the rights to live a digital life.

Brand platform

Don’t wait, grab it your way.

What is the tone?

Aggressive, Confident, Sincere

Briefing idea 3: Seeking security in confidence. Who are we talking to?

We are talking to the featurephone owners below 25 years of age. He belongs to the marginalized section of the society. As opposed to the mainstream portrayal of risk-taking, aggressively confident Indian youth, he is vulnerable, risk-averse and hesitates to take bold steps. Being venerable, he seeks compensation in confidence. Thus, when it comes to making big decisions in life, his confidence makes up for his practical or financial limitations. He looks up to people who have humble background like him but are bold, aggressive and knowledgeable.

Behaviour change

He is aware of the infinite interesting possibilities thrown by the world of smartphones. But smartphone being a big investment for him, there is always a big of the fear of new – risking his monthly budget, loss due to breakage/ theft, high data charges, data misuse etc. Thus, he is hesitant to buy a smartphone. Airtel reinstates his confidence by inspiring him for bigger things in life. It’s an assurance that if he is confident then the whole world will conspire to help him, get what he wants.

Brand platform

I am my own backing.

Creative idea:

Giving confidence to buy a smartphone by creating an overtly confident, bold, knowledgeable archetype. Ref: MC Sher in Gully Boy – when he is around, any ‘gully boy’ can grab the bull by its horns.

What is the tone?

Inspirational, Confident, Sincere

Plan of Action While keeping in mind the briefs, we then researched on the topics that can be targeted. We also thought of some acts that can be taken in the consideration. We first researched on the problems that these people face and jot down a few points. Along with that also researched about the existing airtel offers and collaborations if they can be clubed with. While planning we thought of various needs that could be solved by switching to 4G. People who are still using feature phones might not have access to various facilities like: • Not being able to get proper education • Not being able to search for good jobs • Unavailabilty of resources • Unable to showcase their skills • Not able to connect with their families properly

Why don’t they switch to smartphones?

In our research we found that most of the people are still not switching to smartphones because: • They think it’s expensive • Maintainance is difficult • If broken, the repair is expensive • When technology updates, then the existing piece will be outdated

Existing Airtel plans that can be elevated • HDFC Life cover with every recharge • BHIM UPI enabled bank or Payment app • WYNK TUBE (online platform to uplaod and view videos) • Airtel Books • Exapnsion in the most remote areas • Collaboration with Zoom for video calling • Partnering with google Assistant • Integrating AI Technologies such as Call up AI & Fintech OCR

Nature of the Campaign Since the campaign has to target the youth hence the campaign needs to be agressive and one which forces the audience. It could have musical feel as airtel usually has. It should be a call to action immediately. Since the target audience is mostly from lower segment, the language should be a bridge and they should feel it. Hence putting it in Hindi would be a better option as compared to English.

Proposed plans • Ready Nation India’s Biggest Breakup • Breakup from your existing feature phones • Breakup from your existing network • Breakup from voice callibg and switch to high quality video calling

Airtel’s Shark Tank • Airtel users send a video of their invention, Panel of venture capitalists select the top 10 • Winner gets crowed through an online show and airtel helps Make the invention a reality

1 crore gb data giveaway. Trade your old sim card for 10 gb of airtel uninterrupted data

• No Tension plan Go, achieve your dreams and buy a smartphone Airtel always has your back. We provide every assistance that stops you from buying a smartphone with no tension plans

And I learnt.. Functioning of the company

I got to learn about the process of the work from scratch, who all are involved in this process and how does a team work. Everyone is dependent on each other even though the one is at the highest position.

Skills and knowledge

Communication

I feel to be able to interact with people from not just my team but also other teams and other departments. It was great to interact with people from different places and different mindsets. It was great listening to their experiences and it can probably help me in future

Future Influence

This internship helped me nurture my skills and have a self analysis of what I’m good at and what else do I need to learn. One thing I realised that one needs to have a great speed of working and for that one needs to have knowledge about keyboard shortcuts while designing.

Working in an advertising agency for almost 2 months, made me clear my doubts about the work and functions of the company. Now I have a wider knowledge and know about the pros and cons of the industry which would be really beneficial while considering my future options.

Table Tennis Some Amazing Keyboard Shortcuts

Conclusion Summing up my 8 weeks internship at Leo Burnett, it was a great opportunity to be there. I felt as I was working with my own set of people. Even though I was an intern but they always treated me equally like an employee. I was allowed to give my inputs for the projects and they were considered too. They always supported me for my work and were ready to help if I face any problem. Before joining I had a few goals to know like knowing about the company, Knowing about my own strengths and weaknesses. I learnt about how a company works and what all processes are involved before reaching to the final result. It’s not just one man’s work rather a whole team is involved for the same. I learnt how to keep everyone in the loop and to work in a team, how important is it for one to trust their co workers even being in such a competitive environment. Finally after 8 weeks, I was able to understand what I’m good at and what all I still need to learn. I improved my communication skills as I interacted with people from various departments and learnt about their work too. This helped in expanding my knowledge about various fields. I was able to understand the whole advertising industry with its pros and cons and how much dedication one needs to be in this industry. I met some really great people who were a perfect example of how to keep yourself updated with what’s happening around the world and keep taking inspiration from them. Also, I realised how important is it to keep the office culture
