60 Years in Business In 2022 Pursehouse Rural enters their 60th year of business. From one shopfront in Werris Creek NSW, established by Fred Pursehouse, we now operate 19 Pursehouse Rural branches and 8 joint-venture branches across NSW and QLD. It is my pleasure to celebrate our 60th anniversary this year. It has not been without its trials of weather impacted operating conditions, supply chain issues and general operational challenges, but with a strong employee team in place, Pursehouse Rural maintains a commanding presence in the agricultural distribution industry.

In this, our 60th year of operations, I am very pleased to announce that Scott Pursehouse will commence as CEO of the Pursehouse Rural group. Scott takes this position with many years of experience in the business, ready to lead our company through 2022 and beyond.

Our employees are at the forefront of our operations and having good people in place is our number one strategy in providing the best possible service to our customers across rural communities. We continue to seek out experienced and professional individuals to join the Pursehouse Rural business in key strategic areas, assisting our branches to enhance their operations and ultimately provide the best possible services to our customers. AgTech and Understanding when to adopt technology Ian Scutt: AgLink Australia According to Finistere Ventures’ 2020 AgriFood Tech Investment Review, a report developed in collaboration with PitchBook Data, total global investment in agrifood tech companies in 2020 surged to $22.3 billion of which $5 billion was in agtech and $17.3 billion in foodtech.

Introducing the Gartner Hype Cycle. The below graphic provides a representation of the maturity and adoption of technology and how these applications provide solutions to solving business problems.

Biotechnology attracted $1.3 billion in 2020 whilst interest in indoor ag spiked, driven by supply chain and sustainability factors reaching $1.3 billion in funding for 2020, more than doubling the $601 million raised in 2019.

Due in large part to pandemic pressures, animal tech investment exploded in 2020 reaching $847.8 million.

Other sectors including digital technologies, precision agriculture, plant sciences, ag marketplace and fintech also broke investment records in 2020 as stakeholders made their commitment to help growers manage climate change and overcome mounting sustainability pressures clear.

These are big numbers and should translate into exciting times ahead! But how will this really translate when it comes to Australian agriculture, in particular i) the adoption rate and ii) the ongoing use and reliability of new agtech solutions?

The Australian agricultural industry is known for its entrepreneurial approach and as such had its fair share of technology success stories over the years. Too often though, new technologies make bold promises with our industry (retail distribution and farmers) enticed into technology where the expectation hasn’t aligned with ‘the promise’. This can be for many reasons, some legitimate and some perhaps not so.

We understand that Agriculture is a risky game and measured risks are part of the everyday decision-making.

But how can we minimise this risk when it comes to agtech?

For a business in agriculture, the key question should always be asked – “where does the technology I am looking at fit on the curve”. The risk of engaging with an agtech solution during the ‘peak of inflated expectations’ can potentially be costly and in some cases, if the technology fails (e.g. start-up business fails), a feeling of disillusionment inevitably creeps in.

Early adopters are more akin to this risk but more conservative individuals would feel a deep sense of disappointment as their expectations would be that the technology is robust, tested and reliable (fit for purpose).

Given the level of global investment in agtech, we will (and are) expect to see a plethora of solutions offered within the agricultural market over coming years. Exciting as this is, some will be game changers and some will fail. Asking the right questions when assessing these opportunities is critically important to help determine where the technology sits along the hype curve. Hopefully in doing this, you will select a solution that is either on the ‘slope of enlightenment’ or on the ‘plateau of productivity’.

COMBINATION DRENCHES ARE THE NEW STANDARD IN CATTLE A recent scientific article in the Australian Cattle Veterinarians (ACV) journal highlights the need to check that your weaner drench is effective. Drench resistance is widespread in Australia. 6-13,16 THE ACV JOURNAL ARTICLE OUTLINES VALUABLE RECENT DATA FROM 2018 - 2021 ON: • The extent of drench resistance in Australian cattle worms • How different drenches are working against different worm types • Productivity responses when more effective drenches are used on-farm EFFECTIVE DRENCH PROGRAMS ARE ESSENTIAL TO DRIVE GOOD PRODUCTIVITY IN CATTLE. 1 2 3 4 The important worms in Australian cattle are Barber’s Pole Worm, Cooperia and Ostertagia5. Drench resistance in these worms can lead to a decrease in productivity.1 2 3 14 16 The ACV article collates 25 trial results to show that the overall mean efficacy of single active drenches in Australian cattle can be estimated at only 72%.

The dual-active combination of moxidectin and levamisole (Cydectin Platinum) was 99-100% effective against all key worms of cattle.

Barber’s Pole Worm and Cooperia resistance to ‘Mectin’ drenches is common.

Moxidectin (as in Cydectin) has an advantage against ‘Mectin’ resistant worms, especially Barber’s Pole Worm when compared to ivermectin and doramectin.15 16 Mean efficacy of doramectin pour-on against Barber’s Pole Worm across 8 studies was 28.9% while mean efficacy of moxidectin pour-on was 75%.

Moxidectin was still 97-100% effective in controlling Ostertagia in five scientific studies.

Levamisole used on its own was not always reliable against Ostertagia and should be used in combination with another active for reliable worm control.

THE IMPACT OF DRENCH RESISTANCE IN CATTLE PRODUCTIVITY Over a period of eight weeks, the failure to effectively remove worm burdens in growing cattle can mean a potential loss of 8-12 kg.1 2 While many cattle producers can visually identify a difference of 30-50 kg, it is difficult to identify a productivity loss of 8-12 kg. This is one reason that drench resistance may remain unidentified on some cattle properties. This is a problem, because investment in genetics and feed may be undermined by failings in the animal health program.

COMBINATION DRENCH, CYDECTIN PLATINUM, LED TO INCREASED WEIGHT GAIN In 2020-21 James Cook University (Townsville, Northern Australia) and NSW DPI (North Coast, NSW) investigated cattle weight gain following treatment of weaners with different drench products. Cydectin Platinum led to increased weight gain (for example 8 kg more than doramectin pour-on over 2 months).

Conducting a full DrenchTest (Worm or Faecal Egg Count Reduction Test (WECRT/ FERCT)) every 2-3 years is regarded as best practice5 to accurately determine the resistance status and efficacy of each drench class against each worm species on your property.

AUSTRALIAN sheep producers spent almost $104 million in the last 12 months on drenches to manage internal parasites.1 Unfortunately, many of these drenches are no longer fully effective in controlling worms and in some cases, are completely ineffective.2 There is widespread single, double and triple resistance to all older active ingredients, including moxidectin and two, three and four-way combinations.2 Any reduction in drench efficacy has a direct impact on the health and productivity of sheep throughout the year. Even a mild or moderate reduction in drench efficacy can reduce potential income by 2–10%.3 At a conservative gross margin of $150/ewe (excluding feed costs),4 a 15% reduction in drench efficacy equates to $3/ewe in lost production. A 35% reduction in drench efficacy equates to $15/ewe in lost production.

Drenching is hard work, and it takes just as much effort to administer an ineffective drench as it does a fully effective drench. The most expensive drench is the one that doesn’t work!

Infected cattle have 7.4% less average daily weight gain17 and can have 5.4% lower feed intake17.

Dr Matthew Petersen, Livestock Operations Manager at Zoetis recommends that reseller staff ask their producers six questions before selling a cattle drench: • Is the drench being used for weaners and young, growing cattle?

• Are they buying cattle in or bringing cattle back from agistment blocks?

• Are cattle being inducted into a

backgrounding or feedlot facility?

• Have they been disappointed by previous results from drenching?

• Have they had parasite resistance diagnosed on your farm?

• Do they also need to control ticks and/or lice?

WHEN DEALING WITH RESISTANT PARASITES, DELIVERING THE RIGHT DOSE IS VITAL. An injectable drench is deposited below the skin and absorbed directly into the bloodstream. Injectable drenches therefore achieve higher peak blood and tissue levels compared to pour-ons. Injectable drenches slow the development of resistance.16 Doramectin when injected achieves higher tissue concentrations than ivermectin and moxidectin.

If a producer answered ‘Yes’ to any of these questions, the producer should consider using a dual active drench to ensure a high efficacy worm kill and to either prevent parasite resistance developing on your farm or break existing resistance profiles, said Dr Petersen.

Given its very high treatment efficacy, Dectomax V is ideal as a quarantine/ induction drench to prevent resistance worms entering a farm with brought in stock. Preparation is the key to the cattle industry Industry advice and insights with RaynerAg Pursehouse Rural spoke to Alastair Rayner, from RaynerAg, to get his advice on cattle production success in 2022.

Alastair Rayner has 25 years of experience in the beef industry, first starting out with the DPI as the Beef Cattle Officer for Glen Innes and Tamworth before establishing RaynerAg in 2013. RaynerAg is a consultancy business focused on cattle program development. Alastair works primarily with individual producers to find solutions to their production processes and making greater efficiencies across their operations as well as identifying strategies for greater returns. Alastair also works as a stock and station agent assisting clients with the entire process from herd management, to feeding and then marketing.

PHR: 'Let us talk about cattle market trends. What did we see in 2021 that is carrying into 2022?'

Alastair: 'We have a unique circumstance in that the demand for livestock is being driven by producers that have come out of a drought period of four to six years, and they are trying to rebuild their herd. The challenge is really that there is demand for people to restock, but there is also a decrease in supply.'

'The other part of it is that there is a tremendous amount of optimism. The fact that cattle have been worth so much for 12 months has made them feel optimistic and they are prepared to

invest in the market. This trend will naturally begin to ease. We will start to see the influence of cattle coming out of breeding herds address demand. So, I think while good strong cattle prices are exciting, we need to be realistic about market trends.'

'For my clients I make it clear, cattle production is a fairly long term game and breeding certainly is. You need to establish a clear focus and a reasonable time frame to your operation.'

'You have to understand your environment well and what you can achieve from what you have.'

PHR: 'How are you seeing technology influence the way we market cattle?'

Alastair: 'There are several different online platforms to choose from such as Auctions Plus and Herd Online. Herd Online is more of a ‘Gumtree’ concept whereas Auctions Plus is different to a lot of other platforms, in that it is an online auction so you are still being exposed to whatever the markets are doing that day.'

'People are looking at online platforms to try and squeeze out their agent and cut costs. I’m concerned about it because I think that one of the problems with selling livestock direct is that you do take the risk that you don’t get paid. There is also a bit of a hidden economy in that those animals are not going to appear on the national database.'

PHR: 'Let’s talk about animal selection. What are the common mistakes people make?'

Alastair: 'Ultimately, people need different things from different animals. The easiest way is to think about your end goal. What is your main objective? What are you trying to achieve with your livestock? What sort of cattle perform best in your environment and for your market?

Be clear about that and be specific, how big are they? What breed will you need? What maturity pattern are you going to need for your market?'

'Once you have done that, you need to be even more critical about your program. Assess her for her temperament, assess her for structure and her suitability to go into calf, her structure, and her suitability to walk and eat so that she sustains condition when she is in calf. Will she be able to calve without assistance? You want to end up with a group of animals that look the same so that, as a manager, you can do the same thing with them at the same time.'

PHR: 'Do you have any business advice for a startup farmer or a generational farmer?'

Alastair: 'I believe in having an end goal that is clear in your mind. How you get to that end goal doesn't matter, as long as you do it safely and efficiently and in terms of livestock, in terms of

management welfare and bio-security. But the question really must be, what do you want to do?

You want to breed cows and then what? It’s like a decision tree and a process that you have to work through.'

PHR: 'Any tips on easy ways to improve the herd?'

Alastair: 'Let’s start with preg testing. If you are not doing it then why not?'

'Profitability in a beef program is a result of kg of beef per ha.'

'The easiest way is to have cows that are more fertile and ideally cows that are going to calve earlier. Because if they are calving earlier they get longer to recover before the bull goes back in, increasing the chances of a successful conception the following season. Calves are also going to be 60-70kgs heavier at weaning.'

'So pregnancy testing is vital in two respects; you get rid of those that failed to go into calf, and people who are savvy will look at their pregnancies and say these are the earlies, these are the mids and these are the lates. We can get rid of the lates and push the herd fertility forward.'

'Pregnancy testing is an opportunity to physically manage the herd without spending money on genetics or nutrition.'

Kingstar Farm A rising star of the thoroughbred industry

It has been said that in both business and the racing game, it’s not the big that eat the small, it’s the fast that eat the slow. This can be especially true when it comes to the business of producing profitable racehorses. History shows that in racing, its far easier to turn a big fortune into a small one and passion alone for the sport of kings does not equate to either profit or winners past the post.

The operation is owned by its founder Matthew Sandblom, who has a long-standing affinity with racing. He started as a teenager breeding and training dogs for the racetrack at Harold Park, before making a move to harness racing and eventually finding himself with a keen interest in the thoroughbred industry. Amongst other ventures, Matthew holds stakes in the stallion Capitalist, currently standing at Newgate stud.

Enter Kingstar Farm, just six years young, already with a Golden Slipper winner to its name.

It covers 650 acres of prime horse country in the NSW Upper Hunter Valley township of Denman.

We were met by the farms bloodstock agent Conor Phelan, who over the next several hours gave us a comprehensive tour that displayed a consistent, strategic and meticulous approach to the business wherever we looked. The tour left us in no doubt that this is an operation run with experience, skill, and an unwavering attention to detail.

As a vendor, Kingstar offers their stock at sales across the country and can already boast a Golden Slipper winner, Stay Inside, amongst their graduates. They currently also stand four highly commercial stallions, yet they don’t allow initial the stud fee to tip $10,000. Against a backdrop of skyrocketing stud fees across the industry, this strategy is unheard of. However, this unique value proposition is proving to be a successful business model for both Kingstar and breeders who understand that high value is not inherently achieved by paying a high stud fee.

The Kingstar stud fees reflect their pragmatic approach to the business. This approach includes turning over their stock when opportunity presents. Ultimately this strategy is designed to give their customers what Kingstar want for themselves with their own horses - and that is control over the final product.

Kingstar has focused their breeding efforts as if every foal were the next Golden Slipper winner. Whilst Conor runs day to day operations under manager Adam Cook, all selection decisions are ultimately made by Matthew.

The versatility of the land at the Denman property means the foals can be reared as the season requires. 'We're blessed with good water and room to move, although we did lose a few paddocks under water when the Hunter and Goulburn rivers got flowing last year' says Conor.

Kingstar engender the confidence of buyers in many ways. Firstly, Matthew Sandblom himself offers well-bred mares to the stallions standing at Kingstar and breeders are invited to ride his coattails as he offers new and exciting stallions a chance to show what they can produce when coupled with the right mare. Secondly, every Kingstar foal is born, raised, and fed by Kingstar themselves. No foals are bought at a weanling sale and sold on at the next yearling sale. They know each horse from top to toe as it enters the sale ring.

From foaling down, to weaning, to the salering, the yearlings produced at Kingstar follow a carefully monitored program to ensure they stay in great shape and are commercial for the racing industry. The stud takes a pragmatic approach to the business and acknowledges that whilst their primary focus is to breed for racetrack success, that only breeding horses to race yourself will send you broke.

From then on the foals are closely monitored as they grow out in the paddock. Come January, they are branded before weaning and handling commences in February. Foals are microchipped and DNA tested in laboratories in nearby Scone, before being turned out to the paddock with a nanny mare. Some are selected for the weanling sales whilst others remain on farm as preparation for the yearling sales commences.

The selection process for yearling sales gets underway early in August and by September Kingstar have a clear idea of which yearlings will be presented at which sales. Their attention to detail and knowledge of their horses means each horse is presented to exactly the right sale and just the right market.

Kingstar Farm has achieved exceptional success and without doubt this is in large part due to the team behind the operation. But Conor was also keen to point out that there are other ingredients that come into the mix, and lady luck plays her part.

Balala Station Steeped in 181 years of history, sustainably ensuring their future

Located 18km west of Uralla in the historic merino country of the New England region of NSW, Balala station has been operating since 1841. Its inauguration was during an era of mass labour migration, where enterprising types were willing to travel across the world in wooden boats in the pursuit of opportunity, often in agricultural frontiers, to build a life and hopefully make their personal fortunes.

At that time, the NSW Colonial Government was keen to shake off its label as a convict settlement and was actively encouraging free settlers to migrate from the United Kingdom to NSW. Many of these immigrants paid their own way, but the Government was also assisting with transport costs and in some cases, was investing in the private enterprises they undertook upon their arrival.

The society that had developed in NSW by that time was one where the men, women (and children) of the colony were judged primarily on how hard they could work, and what they could produce, not on who they were, or where they had come from. The crucible that was forming the Australian concept of a “fair go” was in full production.

It was upon this backdrop that a new friendship was struck between Mr. Thomas Tourle and Reverend John Morse as they travelled on the Lady Raffles from England to Australia. The ship Departed England on May 1st, 1839, and arrived

4 ½ months later on the 13th of September in Sydney. It must have been a very productive journey for the men as they did not waste any time in consolidating their plans together and heading north to the New England region of NSW upon their arrival.

Rev. Morse was the Church of England Reverend in Scone, and he covered a wide territory across the Upper Hunter in that capacity. His wife, two sons and three daughters had all journeyed with him from England. Both sons became pastoralists in the New England Region, one son George was a partner in Balala and enjoyed continued success with ongoing pastoral concerns with Tourle. The Reverend’s eldest daughter became Thomas Tourle’s wife in 1846, a union that was presided over by none other than the good reverend himself. Reverend Morse died in 1852. His short 13 years of life in Australia were unquestionably productive.

We’ve not uncovered much about Tourle prior to his arrival in Australia. It is clear though that he was exceptionally successful in his ventures in the NSW Colony. In 1854, just 15 years after his arrival, he purchased Waratah House at present-day Mayfield, near Newcastle. At that time Mayfield was an area of vineyards and large country estates, of which Waratah House was considered the most prized. He enjoyed the lifestyle and reputation of a wealthy English gentleman there until his death at age 93.

In 1845, just four years after Balala Station’s inauguration, the station was running 380 head of cattle, 9 horses and 10,000 sheep. The squatters act of 1846/7 listed Balala Station as 96,000 acres in size. Just a few years later the station recorded 20,000 sheep. This was an exceptional achievement, particularly in light of drought and economic depression that had prevailed in the early part of the 1840’s. At the property’s peak, it reported 44,000 sheep shorn, producing 1,160 bales of wool.

Tourle and Morse sold Balala Station in the late 1870’s to the Hudson family, and despite many divisions and sell offs over those years, the homesteads and surrounding 1500 hectares remained in the family’s possession until 2011, when Richard Daugherty and Sarah Burrows purchased the property.

Today, Uralla is the closest township to Balala, but it did not exist as a township until 1855. For that reason, Balala was initially a wellspring for its own essential services and had a butchery, a general store, a post office, granary, bakery, blacksmith, carpenter, stables and more. They were strung along a street-like common in front of the main residences. Of the commercial premises, the granary and general store are both still standing to this day. So too is the woolshed.

The four residences are not only all still standing; they are all still inhabited. This includes the original timber homestead which is built of timber slab and still wears its original timber shingles under a protective corrugated iron roof.

The original free-standing kitchen, along with its masonry oven, which would have been used to bake the daily bread are all still in use, though the masonry oven is used more-so for wood fired pizza and special occasions – suckling pig at Christmas being the specialty.

Pastures are managed to maintain healthy and diverse deep-rooted perennials, with the driver of the whole system being maintenance of green leaf area in support of the soil ecosystem. Koala habitat is nurtured, and the creek that runs through this working farm is home to hundreds of platypus and a sanctuary for the endangered Bells turtle.

Cattle and sheep have been the mainstay of the farm since 1840 and are still the backbone of operations today. It is not without some nostalgia that the original sheep and cattle brands are still in use today.

The management approach towards the sheep and cattle is an extension of the holistic approach to all other aspects of the farm. With all animals they adopt best animal practice and aim to achieve the ‘5 Animal Freedoms’ being Freedom from hunger and thirst, from discomfort, from pain, injury, and disease, in order to express normal behaviour, free from fear and distress.

The property maintains both a self-replacing flock of Dohne and super fine Merino sheep.

The dual-purpose nature of the Dohne allows a different enterprise mix than may be achieved by only running Merino. The Dohne wool strategy is concentrated on achieving a bright white 17 - 18 micron wool suited to the difficult conditions of the New England. Focus is on the Dohne Index and wool is only 35% of this focus, the balance is focused on meat production. Whereas with the Merino flock the concentration is essentially on softness and style in the wool, aiming to produce 16.5-17.5 micron wool. Balala are proud members of AWEX’s SustainaWool Gold program.

The Angus cattle herd is also self-replacing, though there is a pragmatic approach to managing this herd in consideration of climatic and seasonal change. At times this requires a greater focus on trading stock and de-stocking to form a carrying capacity buffer.

To achieve the best product, focus is on ASBV's when selecting bulls. Because Balala are in control of the Farm Gate they can focus on IMF and Shear Force in ASBV's, because they get the direct benefit of product. It is extremely important from an epigenetics perspective that the animal is suited to the environment in which it lives.

Richard and Sarah take enormous pride in the whole farm approach and bringing the terms of trade back to the Farm Gate was the obvious circular connection to complete the process.

It has been a very rewarding venture for the farm, and consumer feedback regularly states how much improved the product taste is.

Pork was introduced to the farm as part of a recovery strategy from the brutal dry period of 2017-2019. With the option of getting back into cattle not financially possible at that time, the opportunity presented itself to run a free-range pig enterprise. This has been an interesting learning curve, but the pork produced and the small goods options now available, a nose to tail utilisation can be achieved.

The burgeoning Angus heifer herd have all recently calved and so the herd is growing slowly as they focus on a rebuild of herd numbers.

Cattle as a large grazing ruminant are vital in the whole ecosystem and play such a critical role in bringing plant matter back to the soil surface to feed microbes and life in the soil.

Recently Balala station has ventured into the farm stay enterprise, partnering with friends who own a Tiny House. This is exciting for Richard and Sarah, because education and sharing what they do on the farm is so important to them. Other farmers have an option to stay on farm to see what happens and for them to then make their own minds up as to how they may farm sustainably on their own enterprises. The other option with the farm stay is to just come and enjoy the surroundings being immersed in nature.

Soil health testing reveals simple solutions Australian farmers manage approximately 60% of the Australian landscape and witness firsthand the role soil health plays in driving the productivity, profitability and sustainability of Australian farm businesses.

Recently soil, and the relationship between healthy soils and the environment, has been formally identified as a significant national asset under the Federal Government’s $196.9 million National Soil Strategy.

With an increasing focus on the importance of soil and soil health, the questions that’s front of mind for many Australian farmers and their advisors is how best to achieve and maintain healthy soils within a productive and profitable farming system?

For senior agronomist, Jim Laycock, the ability to measure and monitor the soil’s key biological, chemical and physical characteristics is essential to understanding and improving soil health.

Based at Cowra in Central West New South Wales, Jim has worked as an agronomist for 26 years, specialising in broadacre cereal and legume crop production.

He has been instrumental in the development of a new soil health test package from the Nutrient Advantage Laboratory, designed to help farmers better measure and manage their soil health.

“The package comprises four tests and looks at the total carbon and total nitrogen, and C:N ratio of soils, as well as aggregate slaking and dispersion, active carbon and microbial respiration,” Jim says.

“These four quite simple tests, when taken together, can yield very useful insights that can be addressed in both the short term and over time, in the long term as well.”

With soil health being linked to total nitrogen, total carbon and active carbon levels, these tests can alert farmers to shortcomings in their overall soil health, prompting practice changes to fix any problem areas.

Jim says that while soil health and building total carbon in soils is a long-term and wide-ranging

pursuit, there are short term practice changes that can help counter particular issues.

“For example, if a test reveals low levels of labile, or active, carbon in soils, that means soil microbes are short on nutrients and nitrogen supply and recycling can be slowed.

“Fortunately, once identified it’s relatively easy to increase labile carbon levels within a twelve-month period, for instance by implementing a pulse crop into your rotation to boost biomass.”

Similarly, the aggregate slaking and dispersion test looks at the response of a soil aggregate to water by identifying sodic and dispersive soils with structural instability, and determining if a soil will slake, set hard or crust when wet.

“Slaking, hard setting and crusting all increase erosion potential and nutrient run off, and reduce air and water movement through soil,” Jim says.

“So, if the soil health package reveals highly dispersible soils, simple agronomic tools like the addition of calcium can be used to correct the issue.”

While increasing data on overall soil health is the first step to improving it, Jim sees the recommendations and guidance that comes with that data as absolutely critical.

“The real value for farmers is in having support around their decision making,” Jim says.

QLD Central Queensland Coast With last year’s crush, fertilising and spraying becoming a distant memory, planting will be soon upon us again. Under the current reef protection regulations, soil tests need to be taken within 12 months of a new crop cycle. The team at Pursehouse Rural are currently collecting soil samples and we are ready to collect samples from your paddocks prior to planting this year. Pursehouse Rural can also assist with a nutrient management plan which is also a requirement under the Reef Regulations Act. Pursehouse Rural Agronomists produced management plans for many of our customers last year, with feedback being that it does make things a whole lot easier for growers to not only record the nutrient applied per block, but also to the farm as a whole.

Soil samples coming back from the lab are showing the normal requirements for supplementation with Nitrogen, Phosphorus, Potassium and Sulphur. However, the need for other nutrients like Calcium, Zinc and Copper is now becoming very common. Calcium found in lime has been spoken about for years and many growers have elected not to address this

in the past. However, taking into account issues like soil acidification, high aluminium levels and the plants basic need for calcium, I would urge growers to start adding calcium into their fertiliser budgets.

With Zinc regularly showing up in soil tests as being deficient, last year many growers started applying a high loaded Zinc product directly on the billet at planting. This was a technique I also used successfully to stimulate root growth in cereals in my previous agronomy work. The addition of Zinc in cereals allowed the greater root mass to explore for moisture and nutrients. Not surprisingly, it has the same effect when applied to the cane billet.

We have also been mixing Zinc with Imidacloprid (Confidor) and applying it when stool splitting in ratoons.

Growers would be aware that under the reef regulation guidelines in Proserpine we are allowed to fertilise to the district average of 130T/Ha, with most growers fertilising to this average. Let’s say you had ratoons yielding either 60, 80 or 100T/Ha this year and you adjusted your fertiliser rate to suit. The potential saving per Ha would range from $300, $200 & $100 per ha respectively. That’s a big saving over a whole farm.

Obviously, there are other things to take into consideration before applying reduced fertiliser rates.

As growers will be very aware, unless there is a dramatic downturn in prices over the next few months this year fertiliser pricing will be higher than usual. The question needs to be asked - is this a year to start looking at what rates of fertiliser are being applied to different blocks on the farm? There are a couple of easy things to

QLD Darling Downs The season of 21/22 has restored confidence in summer cropping after a run of disappointing ones.

November rain caused harvest delays resulting in losses and downgrades for winter crops. It also waterlogged early spring planted summer crops, but it filled moisture profiles and was ideal for sorghum and corn. Cotton and mung bean growth was slow in the milder, cloudy conditions but at least were not moisture constrained in dryland situations.

Corn area was restricted by a series of poor performances as a result hot dry seasons, particularly on dryland, a lack of grit market contracts and hesitation over Fall Armyworm.

However, early crops came through unscathed from Fall Armyworm, as anticipated, while the summer plant came under pressure. Less Johnson Grass Mosaic Virus ( JGMV) was seen in corn, this season, which was encouraging.

Higher fertiliser prices and recent poor summer seasons meant more conservative yield projections and the actual yields reflect this. Reduced tillering in spring planted sorghum has been noted this season, largely due to the waterlogged cloudy start.

But large head size and good grain fill has compensated for lower head number counts and yields have been pleasing.

As we approach late autumn, fallows from winter 2021 have good levels of moisture, with low to moderate levels of fertility depending on crop offtake.

This depended on whether they were taken off in a timely manner or were, in some cases, abandoned. Spring hail also played a part in losses in some areas. There will also be early harvested summer crop to be double cropped. With high fertiliser prices and product availability tight, yield expectations will be moderated.

However, maximising farming

profitability requires consistent yield outcomes and good nutrition is essential. Large stubble loads have broken down reasonably well but tie up of nutrients will cause temporary issues in winter crops if not supplied with additional nutrients where needed.

Last winter we managed to run a winter cereal variety demonstration site, with the help of the Bullock family, and have some useful data on the varieties tested. There is also information from seed companies available on the Pursehouse Rural website. Look up the News area and follow the link. The results from the demonstration are available on request.

NSW Liverpool Plains Just as the 2021 winter crop harvest was gearing up to be a cracker, growers were faced with an assortment of challenges. November saw the area receive the highest rainfall for the year, making harvest and summer crop planting extremely difficult for many. For some, the wet weather pulled harvest to a stop for a period of time and has continued to drag on well into the early months of 2022.

The wet conditions also proved challenging for growers when a large portion of grain was left weather damaged. If growers are looking to retain and store this grain, be mindful of the moisture content when looking at storage options. It is important to ensure the moisture content is not over 12-12.5% as the risk of mould production and insect damage is greater during storage.

Weather damaged seed has a higher risk of poor germination percentages and reduced vigour. If looking to use weather damaged seed for winter crop planting, a laboratory seed test should be undertaken to determine the germination percentage.

approaching therefore careful paddock planning and preparation needs to be put into place to ensure plant health and yield potential is maximised. A few things that should be taken into consideration include soil and stubble-borne diseases, fallow management, and soil health.

If we can take anything from the last two winter’s, it’s that disease management in our winter crops is essential and early diagnosis is key. Paddock selection and careful crop rotation is a crucial tool in the management of soil-borne and stubble-borne diseases. Growers should aim to avoid planting wheat on wheat and should continually assess paddocks throughout the season for crown rot and root-lesion nematode levels paying particular attention to basal browning. If you have a paddock of concern, please contact your local Pursehouse Rural Agronomist, who will undertake testing to help determine what diseases you could be dealing with.

Weeds have been progressing rapidly given the ideal growing conditions.

Timely fallow sprays are essential to ensure moisture and nutrient

preservation is maximised. This summer we saw large populations of Fleabane and Windmill Grass in fallows, and with the wet conditions comes a small window for control.

In many cases, a double knock strategy is used to improve control.

When considering if a double knock strategy may be used, consider the weed species present, the interval time and the water rate needed.

Soil health also needs to be considered prior to sowing winter crops. Soil testing is a valuable tool in providing growers with information that will allow them to make sound fertiliser decisions. The results from these tests will allow growers to diagnose key issues relating to their soil, such as giving reason to areas of poor growth, as well as providing the opportunity for growers to assess their current fertiliser program and make changes, if required, to better suit their soil and to ensure target yields are achieved.

NSW Hunter Valley Pastures produced big yields through winter and spring and stock have struggled to keep on top of feed in some areas. Many blocks were hit with big germinations of St John’s Wort and Purpletop. Large control efforts by ground and air have reduced seed set for the coming year. Re-check and control patches this coming spring to keep these weeds manageable going forward.

With plenty of feed about in spring, forage sorghum plantings were down as growers made the most of existing supplies of fresh grass.

Continued rain and a mild summer meant weeds had a good run too.

Many blocks needed a couple of sprays to keep them under control, using Starane for bigger burrs, Amicide for wireweed and fleabane using larger droplet sizes to reduce spray drift, and slashing if winds were unfavourable or where weeds had grown too large for optimal chemical control.

has assisted moisture conservation, while in other areas the topsoil has dried down and growers will be looking for good showers to freshen up weeds and improve fallow spray efficacy or to moisten soils to aid cultivation. Pro-active fallow management now, with early spraying or strategic cultivation will mean that if good rains arrive, crops and pastures can be sown quickly and painlessly. This avoids delayed sowing and missed feed production opportunities if fallows aren’t ready and big rains set in right through until mid-winter.

Following the high forage yields of the last 6 months, soil testing is important to determine fertiliser rates to replace nutrients and ensure optimal yields. Many factors have increased fertiliser prices in recent months, but as we approach sowing, nitrogen finally appears to be easing slightly. If prices do stay high, we may see more growers sow with starter fertiliser then topdress with Urea later in-crop, instead

of applying nitrogen pre-sowing.

If chemical phosphate prices stay high, there may be more interest in slow-release biological phosphate fertilisers that are now comparable in price.

If good rain comes early, many will sow early oats, with some improved new varieties to consider. As the temperatures cool, annual and Italian ryegrass plantings will commence, followed by forage barley. Some growers may also consider sowing their forage cereals in combination with ryegrass to provide quick winter cereal bulk, followed by solid ryegrass production right through until early summer, if good rainfall continues later in the season. Perennial pasture plantings are replacing native and low carrying capacity pastures, left over from the drought. These new perennial pastures are increasing carrying capacity and quality of pasture available. Quality, long term perennial pastures are perfect for twin bearing ewes and result in the ability to develop new country, increasing overall carrying capacity of your property.

Oats and annual ryegrass are a common mix this year with weaner cattle and heavy lambs looking to graze these paddocks. Rotational Grazing of young stock on these paddocks will increase carrying capacity and help manage worm burdens, especially in Lambs. Newly sown pasture is perfect for low contamination feed due to not being grazed by stock for some months whilst establishing. Always use a fully effective drench before moving the

lambs onto the newly sown pasture and graze down to 800 – 1000 kg DM/ ha residuals. Rotating paddocks for should show results within a month and will result in less larval intake of your lambs and contamination of that pasture for the next period of grazing while maximizing growth.

With winter feed always an issue, ProGibb can be a helping hand.

ProGibb SG contains a natural plant growth regulator formulated as a water-soluble granule formulation for use in pasture systems. It increases the natural level of gibberellins contained in plant tissue, growing feed faster and creating significant gains in dry matter yield in the middle of winter.

Adequate soil moisture and nutrients need to be available to support the

additional pasture growth (Note: ProGibb SG is not a fertiliser or a fertiliser substitute). ProGibb should be applied with a boomspray that gives adequate coverage of the pasture. A boomspray with flat fan nozzles used to apply herbicides is perfectly suited to ProGibb applications. Ideally, a water volume of 100 litre per hectare should be used with liquid fertiliser. We have liquid nitrogen fertiliser in stock at Pursehouse Rural Uralla as well as Pasture Plus liquid fertiliser, to meet your requirements.

Look at herbicide needs for winter weeds such as Nodding and Saffron Thistle. Agritone and Amicide Advance are in tight supply so get in early. We have stocks of both Agritone and Amicide Advance, as well as Lontrel Advance and other herbicide options.

NSW Central West Wet weather continued through late 2021, pushing crop yields to new highs for many growers. The caveat, grain quality. As rain continued through harvest a large portion of grain was downgraded once headers and harvest machinery could get grain off the paddocks. Harvest logistics were also challenging from obtaining staff, machinery, trucks, delivery turnaround times, to dragging out bogged machinery.

Wet weather created flushes of weeds and volunteer seedlings of shelled out grain, even in unharvested crops.

Juggling weed spraying and harvest kept many busy over the Christmas and New Year period. Once obtained, and only on a limited availability, aerial spray operators assisted in

some larger weed control operations.

Ideal moisture conditions allowed most summer crops to be planted prior winter crop harvest. Crops included sunflowers, sorghum and millet. Tropical grasses have also been planted throughout the summer period, an amazing year to be establishing these grasses.

Paddocks of cowpeas also sown over the summer. The window to plant late mungbeans expired due to continuing wet conditions.

Good quality seed for 2022 winter crop plant has become an issue with many in the process of sourcing new seed. Cool conditions over the summer have promoted the idea of planting many forage and dual purpose cereals early, thus presently

kicking many growers into gear.

In the current situation of supply and distribution of agricultural inputs, there’s an increasing need for growers to plan and obtain their required agricultural inputs, otherwise many could be disappointed.

Stored soil moisture is patchy, variations range between full moisture profiles on heavy soil and well managed fallows through to limited moisture on red hard, soil and less managed fallows.

Perched on the banks of the Namoi River, Gunnedah is home to over 9,000 people (2016 census), the majority of whom, you may safely assume, work within an agricultural field or within an industry closely linked to it, as 80% of the land surrounding Gunnedah is dedicated to farming or an agricultural pursuit.

‘That’s the beauty of Gunnedah’ says Branch Manager, Chris Avard.

‘It’s the diversity. We sit in this little climate belt where the average temperatures are inducive to growing Summer and Winter crops.’

At any time of the year the Gunnedah branch is a hive of activity due to the dual inputs by farmers in the area. The Gunnedah region is a

significant producer of Australia’s cotton, as well as cereal and oilseed grains, alongside livestock operations.
