Appointments Baxi has announced the appointment of Scott Riley to the newly created position of Head of Technical Solutions - Residential. Believ welcomes PAS 1899 review and advocates for improved accessibility for EV charging Electric Vehicle (EV) Charge Point Operator (CPO) Believ is welcoming the BSI PAS 1899 review and updated recommendations as an important milestone in industry coming together to improve access of EV charging for all drivers, including those with diverse accessibility needs.

Believ was involved in both the technical review group, and the accessible charge point data standard working group, supporting the assessment of the existing requirements.

Key amongst the findings was the need to recognise the differences in charge point installation in built environments and to identify industry implementation advice specific to different scenarios, such as managing the logistical and spatial constraints of on-street charge point installations.

The review usefully addresses the challenges faced by local authorities, businesses, private landlords and CPOs, recognising the complexities and technical limitations of accessibility measures, for example understanding that solutions still need to be further developed regarding charging cable weights.

The review also highlights the importance of future engagement with European bodies such as CEN and CENELEC, helping to create more consistent, pan-European accessibility guidance, as a positive step towards global accessibility standards for EV infrastructure.

Draper Tools generates over a half a million kWh of clean energy in 2025 The Draper Tools annual Wrap Report for 2025 reveals how the 106 year old, family-run business has generated 517,373 million kilowatt-hours (kWh) of clean, renewable energy across the year.

According to Absolar, solar intelligence and installation company, the amount of energy generated in 2025 is enough to make 11 million cups of tea! More importantly, it has prevented over 100 tonnes of CO2 emissions from entering the atmosphere.

Matt Sheen, CEO at Draper Tools said: “The solar installation at our new environmentally efficient warehouse represented a major

investment for us and certainly required meticulous planning and execution from the Absolar team. However, getting our first annual Wrap Report from them has definitively proven just how worthwhile and strategically important that decision was.”

Draper’s new warehouse features over 900 solar panels, carefully placed around 700 skylights. Absolar handled the full end to end delivery, from initial feasibility and remote scanning to installation and commissioning, with Draper’s Wrap Report showing just how detailed its data is.

ABB reaches major milestone at Oiartzun Factory ABB’s factory in Oiartzun, Spain, has reached a major sustainability milestone, becoming the first ABB site in Spain to achieve zero operational emissions under the company’s global Mission to Zero program.

Over the past five years, the 110-year-old plant has achieved a 42 per cent reduction in energy consumption compared to 2019 levels. The site has also eliminated fossil fuel use, operating entirely on renewable electricity generated on-site and from certified sources.

The Oiartzun factory now meets 100 per cent of its energy demand through renewables, supported by more than 580 kWp of photovoltaic panels installed on-site. The factory also uses ABB building automation and energy management technologies to optimise lighting, heating, and power distribution across the site. Energy performance is monitored through ABB eLink, a digital platform that provides real-time visibility into energy consumption and helps teams make informed decisions to enhance efficiency and reliability. The facility is also equipped with EV charging stations, supporting ABB’s transition toward clean and electrified operations.

Beyond decarbonisation, the site’s sustainability strategy spans social commitment, efficiency and circularity. The factory is certified to ISO 50001 for energy management and has achieved Zero Waste to Landfill status, reinforcing its commitment to responsible resource use.

InstaVolt celebrates major milestone with 3,000th charger signed

The 3,000th charger will be installed as part of an exciting expansion at Booths Knutsford, which is celebrating its one-year anniversary.

York Minster’s solar upgrade prioritises sustainability and safety York Minster, the world-famous Gothic cathedral at the heart of York, has achieved significant energy and cost savings following the installation of an advanced rooftop solar system - designed to maximise both energy efficiency and safety.

“This is an incredibly important building – it’s the symbol of this great city, the largest Gothic cathedral north of the Alps, so it has huge international significance; however it is also a building with an unfortunate history of fire.” explains Alex McCallion, Director of Works and Precinct for the Chapter of York.

SolarEdge’s advanced fire safety technology is key to protecting the 800-yearold cathedral. In the first six months, the 184-panel array has generated more than 42,000kWh of clean electricity, meeting over 80 per cent of the Minster’s energy needs at peak, saving nearly £20,000 in electricity and offsetting eight tonnes of CO2 emissions.

The installation is part of the Chapter of York’s ambitious strategy to decarbonise its estate, ranging from residential homes and commercial properties. As one of several projects under this plan, York Minster contributes to a growing portfolio of solar installations across the estate that generate over 120,000 kWh of clean energy a year.

Sero and SNG strengthen partnership to deliver independent Retrofit Coordination for £36.5m Wave 3 Warm Homes Project Sero and SNG (Sovereign Network Group) have announced the continuation of their long-term partnership to deliver independent Retrofit Co-ordination Services for SNG’s Wave 3 Warm Homes Social Housing Fund Project, which has secured £36.5 million in funding to retrofit 4,500 homes - the second largest funding allocation for a single landlord under Wave 3.

Building on their successful collaboration on Wave 2.1, where Sero supported both the bid submission and the delivery of 1,000 homes (£9.4m funding), this marks the second largescale retrofit project between the two firms.

The Warm Homes Wave 3 project will deliver a combination of ventilation and airtightness improvements, insulation measures (largely loft and cavity wall), and electrified heating via air source heat pumps. These interventions aim to lower residents’ bills and enhance comfort, health, and wellbeing. For some homes, SNG will be self-funding further improvements, such as the installation of

Looking ahead to 2026, we expect a major trend in the renewables industry to be towards products that are sustainably produced and ethnically sourced.

Installers and EPCs, particularly in the C&I and public sectors, are scrutinising the origins of the components they fit more closely than ever. This shift is largely being driven by customer expectations, as businesses and local councils work to meet regulatory and CSR targets, demonstrate transparent supply chains, and improve traceability and embodied carbon reporting.

Access to products that meet these requirements is becoming increasingly important. Demand is growing for components with lower embodied carbon, fully traceable materials, and independently-verified ethical sourcing practices. However, busy installers and EPCs simply don’t have the time or resources to verify every component themselves.

This is where choosing the right distribution partner matters. Installers and EPCs should partner with a company that rigorously audits manufacturers, verifies sourcing practices, tracks material production, and provides transparent duediligence standards. With this support, installers and EPCs can confidently deliver sustainable, future-proofed installations that meet customer expectations, build trust, and enable them to stand out in an increasingly competitive market.”

K tradespeople are predicting price increases for customers and clients in 2026, with day rates expected to rise by an average of 9.5 per cent. That’s according to the new “UK State of the Trades 2025–26” report from Jackson Woodturners.

The research, which surveyed over 500 tradespeople nationwide, found that 81 per cent plan to increase their prices in 2026.

With nearly a third (32 per cent) intending to raise rates by 11 per cent or more, and one in eleven (9 per cent) planning for increases of 20 per cent or higher.

The top challenges included: • Rising costs (43 per cent) • Customer cancellations (33 per cent) • Late or withheld payments (20 per cent) These increases reflect both rising material and labour costs and the continued shortage of skilled workers across the UK.

“This data shows a positive shift in confidence among UK tradespeople. With most booked months in advance, they’re in a position to set prices that reflect their true value and the rising cost of

In some cases, (almost one in five, 18 per cent) say their next availability isn’t until April 2026. Despite the challenges and pressure from customers to reduce fees, most tradespeople said they remained optimistic about the year ahead.

The majority are confident about the availability of work and are confident about their business finances in 2026.

T

he EV charging sector has changed considerably over the past year, but perhaps not in the way many expected.

Rather than explosive growth, we’ve seen strategic consolidation and a more nuanced approach to infrastructure development. Instead of a focus on numbers, such as charging points deployed, the last year has seen the industry getting smarter with where and how infrastructure is built, adapting strategies to reflect market realities.

Customer retention has also become an increasingly important focus and business success metric. It’s no longer enough to acquire new customers, you need the backup of great aftermarket support and approaches that adapt as customer needs change.

For public charging, it’s all about location Talking with Elizabeth Warren, Mer’s director of public charging, it’s clear that location has continued to be key in 2025. Commercial landowner collaborations are a growing area, with charge point operators increasingly working with retail partners, supermarkets, and investment funds, to create multi-bay rapid and ultra-rapid charging hubs in locations that naturally suit both journey charging and destination charging.

As Elizabeth says: “There’s been particularly strong growth in retail parks, which are often located on main roads, so they’re easy to access, and crucially, have shops and activities that enable people to do something while they charge. The industry has moved away from the old model of putting a public charger in the back corner of a dark car park and thinking that’s good enough.”

This strategic selectivity has become crucial across the sector. Two or three years ago, aggressive network expansion made sense.

Today’s market demands a different approach, with operators being more selective about where they build. For those able to adapt, this has driven higher usage, and will continue to do so into next year.

Elizabeth adds: “The reality is that there’s considerable competition in the public charging space now, and successful operators will be those who are selective, establish strong partnerships, and leverage data and operational experience to make smart decisions on size and location of charging sites.”

Fleet electrification is evolving Fleet operators are showing significant interest in electrifying their vehicles. Long-term electrification remains a priority for most businesses, and we hope the eVED exemption for vehicles including vans and HGVs as

announced in the recent autumn budget will add further momentum to EV fleet transition.

Meanwhile, the public sector continues to grow. NHS trusts, police, fire, and ambulance services are increasingly running major EV fleets. As Natasha Fry, Mer’s head of fleet sales, notes: “It’s interesting to see a solid growth pattern here: with organisations starting with chargers for public and staff car parking to build confidence and experience, then progressing to electrifying their critical fleet vehicles.”

Last-mile delivery and e-commerce logistics have also shown definite growth this year.

Government funding for commercial vehicle depot and fleet transition has really catalysed the market. Many fleet operators who were interested but lacking funding have now been able to move forward, creating a flurry of activity that will continue into 2026.

Natasha adds: “With only 1-1.5 per cent of commercial vehicles having transitioned to electric so far, there’s enormous growth potential. In particular, the business case is increasingly clear for lighter vehicles, up to 3.5 tonnes, because early adopters have already proven electrification works.”

But there’s also likely to be real acceleration in 2026 for adapted vehicle types – e.g. the construction and utilities vehicles needed to tow generators, highways maintenance equipment, and specialist machinery. Manufacturers are now reaching the point where they’re developing fit-for-purpose electric options for these applications.

Pricing continues to be important Pricing will continue to be an area for development. Since the targeted charging

review, grid costs for distribution and transmission have increased by as much as 450 per cent across the sector, alongside substantial increases in standing charges and wholesale energy costs. Charging out of home continues to be a vatable cost.

There’s cross-industry support for the government in its green transition plans. But there needs to be a recognition that making the EV transition work will require both regulatory and fiscal support. In five years, more EVs on the road and higher utilisation rates will mean standing charges that are spread across more kilowatt hours – prices will come down naturally. However, as we enter the new year, there will need to be government intervention to maintain momentum in the transition to electric vehicles.

Looking forward to the continued transition The past year has developed in interesting ways for EV charging. Retail locations have driven a large share of the new charge points, and strategic placement has won out over sheer volume. The Depot Charging Scheme has highlighted the appetite for fleet electrification, and spending on fleet electrification is starting to unlock.

All the signs point to EV as the norm in future, and most serious players in the sector share that conviction. There’s still a lot of work to be done, particularly around addressing the structural cost challenges. But with the right industry players, and with government support, the transition can only accelerate.

n 2025, power outages made headlines across the globe, and the UK has faced its own energy challenges.

High-profile incidents, such as the Heathrow airport outage, have highlighted the vulnerabilities in our national energy infrastructure. The causes are varied - extreme weather, ageing assets, and system failures - but the message is clear: the UK’s energy system is under strain, and its weaknesses are all too real.

Rethinking resilience for the UK The UK is entering the era of electrification and digitalisation coming together to deliver cleaner, more efficient energy. However, much of our infrastructure is still based on outdated, centralised models that struggle to meet today’s demands.

Resilience today means more than just backup generators. In an unpredictable world, the UK needs intelligent, flexible, digital systems. This means networks that sense conditions in real time, analyse data, and automatically adjust operations to avoid outages. This includes smart grids that balance supply and demand, microgrids that can operate independently during outages, and storage systems that dispatch power when and where it’s needed.

Making grids work smarter Smart grids are the backbone of modern energy resilience. They use advanced monitoring, communication, and control technologies to detect issues early, reroute electricity, and recover quickly from disruptions.

Schneider Electric’s work in modernising grids, such as the €140 million upgrade in Serbia, demonstrates the benefits of connected products, advanced software, and automation. These solutions can be applied in the UK to improve efficiency, support greater integration of renewables, and better balance supply and demand. AI is central to this transformation. It can predict failures before they occur, orchestrate energy flows across decentralised networks, and dynamically balance demand with renewable supply. The result is a smarter, faster, and more resilient energy system.

Charting a smarter path in 2026 True resilience isn’t only about building more capacity, but also about using what we have more effectively. Smart technologies and collaboration are key to ensuring our energy infrastructure can handle whatever comes next.

To achieve this, it’s vital that UK government, businesses, and individuals work together to meet local needs and build resilience against global shocks.

believe 2026 is shaping up to be a pivotal year for the UK’s journey to Net Zero.

Right now, the energy and construction sectors are moving on different trajectories, and unless we bring them together, we risk losing impact.

The energy sector is already out at sea, accelerating toward electrification and renewables. Projects like EQUINOX show heat pumps can deliver reliable flexibility. Environmental Levy changes support electrification, and reforms like P415 unlock the potential that residentlevel technologies such as batteries have promised. Even with the ECO scheme ending, retail energy companies will play a significant role in improving the UK’s 30 million homes.

Meanwhile, the retrofit and construction sector remains closer to shore, facing long-standing challenges around time, cost and quality. While there are many positive exceptions, the market ranges from major contractors charging significant fees, to an unregulated landscape with little quality control. Stakeholders increasingly frame retrofit as a solution for biodiversity, social isolation, health, embodied carbon and placemaking. Valid goals, but hard to quantify and reliant on long-term data.

The risk? In 2026, the energy boat sails on while construction lingers at the water’s edge. If we board only the energy vessel, we’ll electrify homes at scale and decarbonise as the grid shifts, but without addressing fabric, ventilation and quality, households may face higher bills and poor comfort. If we stay rooted on the construction shore, we’ll fail to scale at all.

What needs to come aboard?

To succeed, we must bring the essentials from retrofit onto the energy-led journey.

This means maintaining strong quality standards so installations are safe, reliable and perform as intended, while keeping affordability at the centre. More focus should also be put on health by preventing damp, improving ventilation and enhancing overall wellbeing. As well as this, it is essential to prioritise effective insulation and airtightness to complement electrification.

We may not consistently deliver every ambition, such as embodied carbon or community-owned delivery, but defining retrofit as creating homes that are decarbonised, affordable, and healthy is far better than being left behind.

This is the year to move beyond definitions and start delivering at scale.

new study of UK homeowners reveals a growing trend: more people are choosing to invest in their homes and gardens rather than spending on holidays abroad or special events.

Last year, the average homeowner spent £3,047 on home and garden updates: this is £609 more than they spent on holidays abroad (£2,438).

With one in four UK homeowners having postponed or toned down a holiday this year to fund home or garden improvements. Home and garden spending is set to grow in 2026, with homeowners planning to spend £3,071 on improvements.

The survey of 1,000 UK homeowners, conducted by Platinum Spas, leading hot tub specialists, highlights the shift in consumer priorities and the growing appeal of investing in spaces that can be enjoyed every day. Discussing this trend in prioritising homes over holidays, Sarah Watkins, home and gardens expert at Platinum Spas said: “The home has taken on new importance since the pandemic, the nation has come to value the comfort, functionality, and enjoyment it brings. People are increasingly investing in creating spaces they love and homes that they don’t need a break or a holiday from. This is reflected in trends like ‘enjoying my mortgage’ on social media, where homeowners spend time enjoying their living spaces instead of leaving the house on a weekend.”

Whilst the study found that over a quarter of homeowners have postponed or toned down a holiday this year to fund home or garden improvements, it’s not just holidays taking a hit. Over a fifth (21 per cent) have skipped out on big events like weddings and birthdays for the same reason.

These choices are particularly prevalent among younger homeowners. For those aged 25-34, nearly half (43 per cent) postponed or limited holidays, while over a third (39 per cent) missed weddings or birthday celebrations to fund home and garden improvements.

While it might first appear that younger homeowners are leading this trend due to financial means, the research shows that higher earners are actually most likely to reprioritise spending in this way. More than a third (36 per cent) of homeowners earning £50,271+ have postponed or toned down holidays in 2025, and those earning £75,001– £125,140 are the most likely group to have skipped a wedding or birthday to fund their own home projects (36 per cent).

Looking ahead to 2026, the majority of UK homeowners plan to maintain or increase their spending on homes and gardens. Around half (48 per cent) expect to keep their budgets steady, while over a quarter (27 per cent) plan to spend even more, and only 15 per cent anticipate cutting back.

The appetite for home improvements is not slowing down, with homeowners clearly prioritising spaces they use every day.

Sustainability takes the spotlight at theatre as DALI lighting controls take centre stage B.E.G. has helped the National Theatre Green Store take a major step towards sustainability by supplying an advanced lighting controls system at its new ‘gamechanging’ Bermondsey facility.

The German manufacturer advised switching to a DALI-LINK dimming solution, which can be maintained by the theatre’s in-house team via a free B.E.G. app and could reduce its energy usage by up to 60 per cent.

The project at the National Theatre Green Store, which houses all props, costumes and technical storage, showcases how smart building technologies can deliver measurable energy savings in line with the UK’s growing Net Zero ambitions.

The theatre decided in 2024 to move from its old home in Kennington to an exciting new space in Bermondsey. With materials and resources now more accessible at its central London location, it will lead to an increase reuse of materials across productions. This directly supports the principles set out in the Theatre Green Book, an industry-wide framework encouraging more sustainable theatre production.

ll aspects of cable runs in explosive atmosphere installations demand exceptional attention to detail; with every component carefully specified to ensure they remain operational in times of system stress and prevent ignition of surrounding explosive atmospheres.While cable glands may seem a minor part of the specification challenge, it’s vital that they aren’t underestimated. They are, after all, the primary sealing point for cable entry and exit points and provide mechanical retention, environmental protection, earth continuity and, in explosive atmospheres, they help to prevent or contain an explosion.

Explosive atmosphere installations are classified into various types depending on the type of hazard; typically flammable gases, vapours or combustible dusts. In these situations, cable glands serve five essential functions: Explosion protection Flameproof (Ex d) glands prevent flames produced by an explosion inside an enclosure from transmitting into the external atmosphere.

While Increased Safety (Ex e) glands terminate and seal the cable into the enclosure, which itself contains certified components that cannot spark or reach temperatures high enough to ignite an explosive atmosphere Gas migration prevention Correctly specified or installed glands will prevent explosive gases travelling along cable runs into neighbouring equipment, causing explosion risks.

Environmental sealing Cable glands must block ingress of moisture, dust and corrosive elements. This is particularly important in offshore, marine or chemical processing plants.

Mechanical stability Pull-out resistance, or strain relief prevents cable damage and preserves safety over the equipment’s lifespan.

Earth continuity Any armour or metallic screen in the cable is terminated and grounded inside the cable gland.

Ensuring correct specification If not correctly specified, even a high-quality cable installation and enclosure can become dangerously compromised. So, what steps need to be taken to ensure correct and safe specification? There are several key steps that need to be taken; starting with understanding the environment in which the system will operate. This is classified by different zones – with Zones 0, 1 and 2 relating to explosive gas; and Zones 20, 21 and 22 concerning explosive dust.

These zones are then broken down to confirm the explosive atmosphere and subgroup and from there the type of enclosure protection needed can be identified. As mentioned, Ex d is flameproof, while Ex e is increased safety – no sparks or heat sources. There are also Ex i, Ex nR and Ex t options. The correct type of cable gland is then chosen to complement the enclosure.

Problems arise if the wrong kind of gland is used – for example, fitting an Ex e gland on an Ex d enclosure is extremely dangerous.

The cable type then needs to be matched to the appropriate gland. For example, armoured cables require glands that can correctly terminate steel wire armour (SWA), steel tape armour (STA) or aluminium wire armour (AWA). The material of the cable gland itself, most commonly brass, nickel-plated brass, stainless steel or aluminium must also be selected appropriately.

Attention must also be paid to the cable’s inner bedding diameter, overall diameter, any armour or braid thickness and the applicable tolerances. Any uncertainty in selection risks compromising the cable or cable gland’s performance and overall system integrity.

The inner construction of the cable also needs careful consideration. For example, multicore cables increase the risk of gas migration and flame transmission through any gaps; to mitigate this risk and maintain Ex d integrity, a barrier type gland is required to seal directly around the cable inner cores. Barrier glands are mandatory for Ex d with unfilled multicore cables (per EN/IEC 60079‑14).

A correctly specified barrier gland will provide the peace of mind that gas will be prevented from travelling between the inner cores into neighbouring equipment or enclosures. This is essential in installations where explosive gases (e.g. hydrogen, acetylene, methane, ethylene) are present and pressure differentials exist.

As with every element of any cable installation, cable glands need to comply with industry wide standards. For projects following UKEX/ATEX or IECEx requirements, the key is the EN/IEC 60079 series and every explosive atmosphere cable gland we sell complies with the strict requirements of these internationally recognised standards.

On top of this, glands should carry certification markings that match the explosive atmosphere classification of the system; with temperature ratings that meet or exceed site requirements; gland materials match environmental and chemical exposure profiles; and Ingress Protection (IP) ratings align with enclosure and site specifications. Any deviation can make the entire installation non-compliant.

The specification challenge doesn’t end there: • Corrosion resistance requirements instruct the choice of product material and coating or plating.

• Thread type mismatch is a frequent cause of installation error. Enclosure and gland entry threads need to match in type, length and taper. For Ex d, minimum thread engagement must also meet EN/ IEC 60079-.

And, of course, and it should go without saying – the manufacturer’s installation instructions need to be followed precisely.

Cable glands may be small, but their importance in hazardous and explosive atmospheres is mighty. By following a structured approach engineers and installers can achieve the right cable gland specification every time.”

GPS tracking saves £7k worth of EV cables

G

PS tracking devices fitted to InstaVolt charging cables have seen their first success story, with £7,000 worth of cables saved following an attempted theft.

In the early hours of the morning on Saturday, December 6, InstaVolt’s GPS tracking technology alerted the team that charger cables had been removed from the Bedford at Bell Farm Way site. The alert was quickly picked up by InstaVolt’s Field Service Manager Chris Salmon and escalated to a Detective from Bedfordshire Police, who immediately responded.

At 3am, Chris sprang into action, coordinating Bedfordshire Police while tracking the live GPS signal through our app. His swift response ensured that, although two cables were taken, a further six were protected – allowing the site to remain operational for customers.

Between 3am and 6am, Chris worked with officers to follow the signal in real time. The stolen cables were located hidden behind a substation on a public footpath and have since been secured at the local police station.

While no arrests have yet been confirmed, InstaVolt has provided the police with vital intelligence, including CCTV footage of the offender and their vehicle. Thanks to Chris’

rapid intervention, more than £7,000 worth of equipment was saved.

The next night, Chris was again roused in the middle of the night after a number of cables were taken from InstaVolt’s Caxton site near Cambridge. CCTV identified the vehicle involved in the theft, which was then tracked at high speeds along the A14. Police were dispatched and caught up with the vehicle when it stopped, again recovering the cables taken.

Cable theft has become an increasingly disruptive issue for charging operators and drivers across the UK. Costing millions of pounds in damage, replacement and deterrence.

While InstaVolt acts quickly to restore stolen cables, this means engineers are diverted from upgrading and expanding the network.

GPS tracking is one of a number of steps InstaVolt has taken to protect its cables, working alongside reinforced cable guards and CCTV monitoring to deter theft.

Powering profits for supermarkets though refrigeration technology

hen you step into your local supermarket on a hot summer day you’ll be hit by that familiar feeling: the cool blast of air from the refrigeration aisles. A lifeline for fresh produce and a momentary escape from the heat for us, but keeping those shelves chilled isn’t cheap. In fact, refrigeration can account for up to 60 per cent of a supermarket’s total energy use, driving annual energy bills from between £10,000 to £22,500 for convenience stores, let alone larger supermarkets.

Grocery stores operate in a low-turn over environment, with profit margins often hovering below 2 per cent. As energy costs climb and heatwaves become more frequent, these expenses are eating into already tight budgets.

Yet, despite refrigeration systems consuming such a high level of a store’s total electricity, many supermarket operators are missing a major opportunity to save by upgrading the efficiency and maintenance of their cooling equipment.

New technologies and smarter management strategies are changing the game. By adopting innovative approaches to refrigeration, supermarkets can boost efficiency and unlock significant savings. When these improvements are part of a broader energy management plan, the benefits become even more substantial.

The hidden cost of refrigerant leaks Most supermarket refrigeration systems experience frequent leaks, with some annual leak rates averaging around 11 per cent, and in some case spiking up to 30 per cent. These leaks often remain undetected for several weeks or longer until cooling performance drops or maintenance costs soar. Each unnoticed leak not only undermines energy efficiency but also chips away at a store’s profits. There are significant environmental impacts to consider as well.

In the UK, refrigerants like R-404A have a Global Warming Potential (GWP) nearly 3,900 times greater than carbon dioxide. That means releasing just half a kilogram of R-404A has the same climate impact as emitting almost two tonnes of CO2. These powerful greenhouse gases trap far more heat, turning even minor leaks into major environmental issues. While the UK is phasing down high-GWP refrigerants under F-Gas regulations, many supermarkets still operate older systems that rely on these legacy refrigerants, posing ongoing risks to both energy efficiency and sustainability targets.

Keeping cool while cutting refrigerant waste Modern leak detection technology is enabling UK supermarkets to identify refrigerant losses the moment they begin. By installing distributed pressure sensors along refrigerant lines, operators receive real-time alerts at the first sign of a pressure drop, often well before cooling performance is affected. Recent UK trials show that integrating these sensors with building management systems and automated controls can cut refrigerant leakage by up to 40 per cent, delivering substantial cost savings while helping retailers meet strict F-Gas compliance.

Although advanced monitoring enables faster response and minimises the impact of leaks, it doesn’t prevent them from occurring. To achieve even greater environmental and cost benefits, supermarkets are also transitioning to low-impact refrigerants. For example, replacing high-GWP gases like R-404A with alternatives such as R-448A can reduce direct emissions from leaks by up to 70 per cent. When this switch is paired with active leak detection, overall refrigerant-related emissions across the system’s lifecycle can drop by more than 90 per cent and these gains are possible without the need to fully replace existing equipment.

Smart choices for energy efficiency While refrigeration is vital to supermarket operations, it represents just one piece of the overall energy picture. The entire infrastructure, including electrical systems and opportunities for on-site power generation, plays a significant role in determining operating costs. Thanks to their expansive rooftops and large parking areas, supermarkets are ideally placed to harness solar energy, helping to lower grid dependence and drive down energy expenses.

Flat, open rooftops are ideal for large-scale solar photovoltaic (PV) installations, while spacious parking areas can host additional capacity through solar carports. A rooftop PV array alone can offset 20-35 per cent of a store’s annual electricity demand. When integrated with a microgrid controller and battery storage assets, reliance on imported grid electricity can drop by up to 35 per cent, depending on location and system size.

Increasing on-site generation is great for cutting emissions, but it’s only one part of the problem. To maximise the benefits of renewables, supermarkets also need to tackle power quality challenges. For example, by implementing harmonic filtering and power factor correction. Harmonic distortion, often caused by equipment such as refrigeration units and LED lighting, disrupts the smooth flow of electricity and can lead to inefficiencies. By installing active harmonic filters, supermarkets can protect their equipment from electrical issues, enhance energy efficiency, and reduce long-term maintenance costs.

Low power factor occurs when a supermarket’s equipment draws more electricity than it actually uses, placing unnecessary strain on the electrical system. UK energy suppliers often apply additional charges - known as reactive power or capacity charges - to businesses with low power factor, because inefficient electricity use places extra demand on the grid. These charges are billed directly to the supermarket, increasing their overall energy costs. Installing power factor correction equipment, such as capacitor banks, helps stores minimise these extra costs and optimise their electricity use. These upgrades not only protect valuable equipment and reduce energy waste, but also lead to lower energy bills often delivering a quick return on investment.

Taking efficiency to the next level As commercial electricity prices remain volatile in the UK, supermarkets need to pay close attention to refrigeration. Far from being just another utility expense, refrigeration is a key aspect of daily operations. By improving system efficiency, investing in on-site power generation, and managing refrigerants proactively, grocery retailers can boost overall performance. These measures not only cut costs in the short term, but also help future-proof stores, ensuring they’re prepared to meet customer needs and regulatory requirements for years to come.

Are high-rise developers ready for heat network regulations?

rom 27 January 2026, Ofgem will replace Ofcom as the regulator for Heat Networks. The new regime, which stems from the Energy Act 2023, aims to bring heat networks in line with existing gas and electricity consumer protections. For high-rise residential schemes, this marks a step-change in how communal heating must be planned and operated.

The main body of regulations comes into force on 27 January 2026, when Ofgem will begin formal enforcement of initial conditions.

Between Spring 2026 and 26 January 2027 operators must register with Ofgem via a new digital service to maintain their authorisation.

From 26 January 2027 new heat networks must apply for and receive explicit authorisation from Ofgem before they can operate.

This means that heat networks in high-rise buildings will need to adhere to standards that ensure consumer protections, technical performance, and energy efficiency.

The impact on high-rise residential developments The Ofgem heat network regulations will include efficiency requirements, metering obligations, and authorisation for heat network providers to operate. High-rise residential buildings, which house a large number of homes in a compact space, pose unique challenges when it comes to heating and cooling systems. Centralised heating systems, like Community Heat Hubs (CHHs) and Networked Ground Source Heat Pumps (NGSHPs), offer efficient, low-carbon solutions that address these challenges while aligning with Ofgem’s standards.

Part O of the Building Regulations sets standards for preventing overheating in new residential buildings and mandates providing adequate ventilation systems (natural or mechanical) to remove heat from the building. Networked ground source heat pumps can support the Part O Building regulations. With the ambient ground temperature in the summer being cooler than the temperature in the building, the heating system can also be used for cooling by simply bypassing the heat pump in the warmer months.

Known as passive cooling, all that is required is a small circulation pump and fan to distribute the cool air around the property, which can be achieved at a fraction of the cost compared to traditional air conditioning.

Holistic approach NGSHPs, Community Heat Hubs, and integrated smart thermostat solutions provide a holistic approach to heating (and cooling) that ensures developers meet the highest standards of efficiency, reliability, and consumer protection.

Heat Networks enable developers of high-rise residential buildings to simultaneously comply with Ofgem regulations, the Future Homes Standard and Parts L and O of the Building Regulations, providing a sustainable, futureproofed solution.

How to expand into solar PV Solar PV is at the heart of the UK’s net zero plans, with more homes and businesses choosing solar to cut bills and reduce their dependence on the grid. Modern systems are more complex, with advanced inverters, optimisers and storage solutions.

Installers with recognised solar and electrical qualifications are in high demand, especially those who understand system design and can integrate the technology with battery storage and other low‑carbon technologies.

The key qualification for installers is a Level 3 award in the installation and maintenance of small‑scale solar PV systems.

The best training is delivered in the classroom and on purpose‑built rigs, including roof mounting systems and “live” setups, so you can practise in realistic conditions before working on customer properties.

The number of electric vehicles (EVs) on UK roads has quadrupled since 2021 and battery EVs made up one-fifth of all new registrations in 2024. There are now more charging locations than petrol stations, but significant growth is still needed to support widespread adoption.

Upskilling to EV charge point installer could bring a lucrative new revenue stream for experienced electricians. Where do legal responsibilities now sit between landlords, contractors and housing providers when damp or mould is reported?

Awaab’s Law has placed clear and time-bound duties on social landlords. Since 27 October 2025, Section 10A of the Landlord & Tenant Act has required them to investigate and resolve damp and mould within strict deadlines and these expectations now form an implied term in every social housing tenancy.

Landlords must begin remediation within 24 hours in an emergency.

For significant damp or mould, they are required to investigate within ten working days, send tenants a written report within three days of that investigation, start repairs within five days and complete any follow-on work within twelve weeks.

The legal responsibility rests squarely with the landlord or housing provider but meeting these obligations depends heavily on contractors and maintenance partners. While contractors are not legally liable, their responsiveness, accuracy of diagnosis and ability to deliver effective ventilation or remedial work are what allow landlords to stay compliant.

Similar duties are expected to extend to private landlords once Awaab’s Law is incorporated into the Renters’ Rights Bill, which could pass into law in 2026 following government consultation. Scotland is also preparing to adopt equivalent measures from 31 March 2026.

In essence, the law holds landlords accountable, but it also requires coordinated action with housing teams and contractors to ensure issues are resolved quickly and to a standard that prevents reoccurrence.

Axial fans, for instance, are designed for short, straight-through-the-wall installations, yet we still see them being used where the duct run is far too long. When the wrong type of fan is installed, the system might look fine on day one but will fail to move enough air to stop moisture building.

That’s when condensation, damp and mould start to appear - and under Awaab’s Law, landlords are expected to demonstrate they’ve taken reasonable steps to avoid exactly those kinds of issues.

How do you see the role of electrical contractors evolving as ventilation becomes increasingly integrated with wholehome health and energy systems?

A:

As ventilation becomes more connected and more closely linked to wider home health and energy management, the contractor’s role is shifting from purely installing hardware to commissioning smarter, integrated systems.

Digital tools are becoming a much bigger part of that process.

A good example is our ConfigR app, which we’re now using for the commissioning of our new bathroom downflow heaters and will also apply to the next generation of dMEV fans. Installers who are comfortable setting up products through the app can configure

systems quickly, hand over installations with far greater certainty and use to download fan usage data.

As more ventilation products adopt similar digital commissioning methods, those who build confidence with these tools will be able to work faster, avoid repeat visits and offer landlords clear evidence that systems are set up correctly. That combination of technical skill and digital capability will become a real advantage as homes continue to move towards smarter, more connected ventilation solutions.

Looking ahead, what do you see as the biggest shift in ventilation technology or regulation over the next few years, and how should electrical contractors prepare for it now?

Q: A:

One of the biggest changes we’re seeing is the growing recognition that ventilation is central to indoor air quality, not just moisture control. As homes become more airtight, ensuring a consistent supply of fresh air is becoming harder and the impact on occupants is far better understood.

Indoor air can contain a wide mix of pollutants - from damp and mould to volatile organic compounds (VOCs), dust mites, combustion by-products and airborne viruses - and with people spending most of their time indoors, the need for effective, reliable ventilation is only increasing.

From a technology perspective, we expect more emphasis on systems that actively bring fresh air into the home. Mechanical Ventilation with Heat Recovery (MVHR) has traditionally been the main route for this, but it’s not always practical as a retrofit. That’s why we see local single-room heat recovery units becoming a much bigger category; they offer many of the benefits of MVHR but can be installed in a way that’s far closer to a standard extractor fan, making them much more accessible for existing homes.

The other major shift is the move towards connected ventilation. Products that can provide landlords, tenants and homeowners with clear information on how ventilation is being used - and how well it’s performing will become far more common. App-based commissioning, like the approach we’re already taking with new Xpelair products, will give contractors a faster, more accurate way to set up systems on site.

For contractors, the best preparation is to build confidence with these emerging technologies: understanding how air quality affects compliance, getting familiar with heatrecovery solutions and becoming comfortable with digital commissioning tools. Steve shares how teamwork, drive and a love of the game have shaped his life on and off the pitch

F

rom around 13, I knew I wanted to be an electrician. I was always interested in how things worked, and the trade just felt right for me.

I started my career at 16 when I took on an apprenticeship at the College of North West London. I worked for an electrical contractor in North Harrow called Onsite Electrical Services. That’s where I learned my trade from the ground up. I stayed there until I was 27, and then took a big step – I left to set up Danbro Electrical with Gary. It was a huge leap, but one of the best decisions I’ve made.

Over the last eight years, Danbro has built a strong reputation. We’ve always prioritised long-term value over short-term wins, and from the start, we put people and relationships first. Hiring the right people, creating a strong culture, and genuinely listening to what customers need has made a huge difference.

Four years ago Jamie joined us as a third director, which really helped take the business to the next level. We’ve grown from the two of us working out of a van to a team of more than 35 people, with an office in North Watford and a turnover approaching £3 million. When I stop and think about it, it still feels a bit surreal – but I’m incredibly proud of what the three of us, and the whole team, have built together.

Shaped by the Game Honestly, from the minute I could walk I had a football at my feet. It’s been a huge part of my life for as long as I can remember.

I started men’s football at 15 and worked my way up through the football pyramid.

I’ve loved every part of it – the games, the training, the dressing room banter...football has given me so many memories and shaped so much of who I am.

My footbal hero is Steven Gerrard. For me he’s the complete footballer – ability, passion, leadership. You can’t compare anyone to him.

football close to my heart, and I don’t think I missed a single match. It was a hectic year, but in all the best ways.

Going forward, I want to continue helping the club grow sustainably, both on and off the pitch, while supporting its longterm ambitions. A big part of that for me is helping the young lads and new players who join the club, while maintaining the strong relationships I have with the players, management, fans and everyone associated with Chesham.

Contributing to lasting success is important to me. Ultimately, I’d like to look back and know I was part of a period that moved the club forward and left it in a stronger position than when I first arrived.

Being part of the squad that earned promotion from Step 3 to the National League South in the 2024/25 season was something special – memories I’ll never forget. Seeing everyone pulling in the same direction made it incredibly special. When promotion was finally secured, it felt like a reward for months of hard work, resilience and shared commitment.

Becoming a dad was the highlight of my year – nothing tops that. But I still kept

Finding the right balance on and off the pitch Football is my release. No matter how stressful work gets, the minute I walk into that training room everything else switches off. For those couple of hours, it’s just football. It’s important for my mental health and overall wellbeing, so fitting it in isn’t a problem – it’s something I need.

And football teaches you alot about running a business! You learn very quickly that success is never about individuals – it’s about the collective. The importance of preparation, discipline and resilience translates directly into business. You also learn how to deal with pressure, setbacks and expectations, which are all part of running a company. Above all, football reinforces that leadership isn’t about ego; it’s about creating an environment where everyone can perform at their best.

Football will always be part of who I am. I’m 36 now, but I still want to play at the highest level I can and help lead the team to fulfil its potential. I’ve coached an under-16s team through to under-18s, and now with my little boy being one, who knows what the future holds. Hopefully he’ll want to kick a ball too – and love the game as much as I do.
