Roots Revival South Florida live music junkies have all been witness to a new wave of local bands crashing onto stages everywhere. One trending sound is omnipresent and perpetually growing; it’s fresh and it’s dirty. It’s Americana, roots music with a punk kick in the ass. The genre bending, earhappy giant is all about taking music back to its roots while marinating in the grit of underground alternative.

Key live music hubs like Lake Worth and Fort Lauderdale have quickly taken to this everevolving genre but one major South Florida metropolis, Miami has been slower to embrace these sounds. With this latest wave growing into a musical monster, Miami doesn’t stand a chance.

Eric Garcia is big on the roots revival scene and just so happens to be the man that books the bands at Tobacco Road in Miami. Garcia used to play his own one man band, Uncle Scotchy, eventually meeting Lone Wolf, another local one man band on the circuit. The two became roommates and are now both huge parts of the upcoming Roots Revival Festival. Garcia guarantees that Tobacco Road “is low brow for a Miami club” and thus, the perfect place for the city to launch an Americana revival.

Lone Wolf aka Bruno Esposito is a local guy with big talent. He was bred for this new shape-shifting genre and his one man band is full of passion and talent. The result? A mystifying live show from a guy that truly cares about his music. “It’s a very rewarding feeling to be able to just do it all yourself” said Lone Wolf “There is a sense of freedom to where you can change the song at any moment.”

The day-long fest is bound to please the musically hungry masses and pleasantly surprise anyone desiring bluesy punk in Miami. Not sure if this is your scene? Too late because it already is. Garcia, who put the event together along with Cracker Swamp Productions, promises the music on display will have “a lot more attitude than regular blues music; it’s more raw and gritty.” And it’s about to be in your face.

Samuel Taylor Coleridge may not have felt he had life by the horns when he wrote The Rime of the Ancient Mariner but South Florida residents and visitors alike can sure party their asses off this upcoming February at the Inaugural Iron & Clematis Vintage Motorcycle Festival in West Palm Beach, FL. Few things get a motor head’s blood pumping quite like the words “vintage motorcycle festival” and with over 250 motorcycles and scooters, dating from 1988 and older, this year, the Palm Beach Gardens-based Vintage Iron Club and the West Palm Beach Downtown Development Authority team up to melt even the most authentic metal-lovin’ heart.

Not your typical bike show, the Vintage Iron Club describes their festival as “a family event aimed at people who enjoy vintage motorcycles with a gentleman’s touch.” Daniel Newcomb, co-founder of the Vintage Iron Club and longtime restoration enthusiast, shares his excitement for the event, explaining: “Vintage Iron Club has been attending vintage rallies for years throughout Florida but never saw any events like they do in Chicago or Portland… So we wanted to create an event that was geared towards that style of larger city festivals. The core members of the club, Bob Gilbert, Bart Springer and myself, decided to tackle the idea and it grew faster than we knew what to do with it.”

The event will take place in the ever-popular historical downtown district of West Palm Beach, FL where the glistening of these pristine bike engines is matched only by the twinkle of the event’s backdrop. Starting at the Intracoastal Waterway and heading west on Clematis street, attendees can enjoy over 500 blocks of food, fun, live music, a vintage fashion show at sunset and of course, beautiful custom-made and restored bikes all set against a colorful variety of nightclubs, boutiques, antique shops, restaurants and historical landmarks.

A portion of the proceeds from this event will go to Canine Companions for Independence (cci.org), the U.S.’s largest nonprofit provider of assistance dogs for the disabled. When asked why CCI was chosen to be a sponsee for this event, Newcomb gave an answer too inspiring not to share: “One of the club’s friends has a son with Spinal Muscular Atrophy; AJ Brockman. AJ has faced challenges his entire life and has been wheelchair-bound since the age of two. As the disease began to devastate his body, AJ pursued painting and quickly realized it was a true passion. As AJ’s disease progressed, however, he lost strength in his hands and transitioned from acrylic paints to computer generated art. Today, he creates his art with a mouse and one finger on his left hand (affectionately called his ‘million dollar finger’) but when his hand falls from his mouse and AJ is unable to lift his hand back into position, he can summon help from his devoted CCI service dog, Dre. Dre is my right hand man—literally! With his assistance, I don’t have to stop working to get help. Having Dre adds to my independence and productivity, AJ explains. AJ has never let his disability slow him down. I view myself as being ‘differently-abled’ rather than ‘disabled’ and I live my life to the fullest every day with Dre by my side.”

“Heart and soul go a long way” says Newcomb, referring to the restored and custom builds being shown at the event. Of his favorites, Cafe Racers and Vintage Vespas will be showing at the event. “It will be fun to see that Mods vs. Rockers feel at the show. Registered so far, there will be vintage Harley’s, Brit bikes and all the great Japanese bikes ranging from 50’s - 80’s and maybe a few earlier ones if we are lucky!”

Musical performances for the event showcase a variety of live bands, spanning genres of rock, including the Buckleheads (punk rock), The Riot Act (classic garage band style rock n’ roll), Morgan Bernard Band (pop rock) and Slip and the Spinouts (rockabilly).

Of the myriad anomalous art and music events that call Miami home, the International Noise Conference is a curiosity with little in the way of peers. The event has developed over the past eleven years into a gluttonous feast of avant noise, harsh sonic environments, and various spectacles of art and sound that can be as oppressive as they are encompassing. For sonic masochists with an open mind, a continence for pain, or anyone with a desire to experience something momentary and singular, the INC is a pinnacle event that boasts an overwhelming wealth of unique performances that span the range from grinding hardcore to description defying acts of aural violence and sonic manipulation.

For those uninitiated to the concept of noise performance or noise music, the form (which has no actual form) provides a final frontier for experimental music, and returns music back to a primordial, visceral, animalistic experience.

Generally improvised, the INC’s rules are minimal and there to keep the human element as intact as possible, limiting performances to under fifteen minutes and barring the use of laptops to aid in the mayhem.

Housed at the only suitable locale for such depraved acts of musical degradation, Churchill’s Pub in Little Haiti, the ritual has expanded to a 5 day event for its 2014 iteration, thanks in part to a grant received by INC founder and curator, Frank “Rat Bastard” Falestra, who was awarded the funding after winning the Knight Foundation’s Knight Arts Challenge. Aside from the funding, the grant has also provided the International Noise Conference with a genuinely deserved dose of recognition by Miami’s straight-laced arts community.

Falestra is considered one of noise music’s true champions, an elder statesmen of the form with an international presence that betrays the always approachable local’s demeanor. We spoke with Falestra in preparation for what promises to be the most exciting International Noise Conference yet.

PH: It’s a serious undertaking to put together a festival of this size. What compels you to continue doing it?

Rat: This would be the 11th year and there are so many great musicians that want to come down and do it! They’re all coming down, I’ve got 140 artists! A lot of locals have gotten involved in the program, so we had to add another night of locals. We’ve got three nights of local bands, one night of basically state bands, and the last night is the national and international groups.

PH: How difficult is it to arrange and handle 140 artists?

Rat: Not difficult at all. I know who will come down and there’s about 20 artists, I’m not sure -- they’ve got kids or they’re working -- they may drop. I’ll post most of the out of town bands and I usually get most of them -- I’d say 80%. They come back every year, they always do different stuff. They’re like veterans at this point.

Solid. They’re very creative people and that’s what part of this game is.

PH: As a fan of noise music and a champion of the art, what performances are you excited for this year?

Rat: I always look forward to seeing Cock E.S.P., that’s a classic, but it’s always a surprise. I’m looking forward to seeing all the artists, they’re all great artists!

PH: How do you prepare someone that has no understanding of what noise music to attend the INC? Rat: They have to show up with an open mind. They’ve got to want to come here and experience sound that they’ve never heard before. Sometimes it’s really loud, sometimes it’s not. You’ve got to just try to roll with it -- you’re not going to understand what’s going on right off the bat, but as the night progresses, you may get into it. It’s creative ideas that are related to sound. The way I run it, I want people to do live performances rather than stare at a laptop, that’s why we try to keep the laptops out of it. I want people hitting pedals, running around, etc.

The International Noise Conference is FREE to attend and takes place February 4-8 at Churchill’s Pub. We highly recommend you attend. In a musical climate where even rock ‘n’ roll bands have started to rely upon loops and laptops to sanitize the piss and vinegar out of their performances, the INC is an opportunity to imbue oneself with sound creation and performance defined by human creativity in a completely unfettered element. ~ David Von Bader

Space Mountain Alicia Apfel thought it was time South Florida opened up an arts space dedicated to free-flowing experimentation.

Apfel envisioned a place where artists and musicians can create, perform and do whatever they want to do without answering to anyone. Why not allow artists absolute freedom? That’s the core idea behind Space Mountain, the alternative arts venue that Apfel opened in December 2013 in Miami just north of Little Haiti. To keep the venue free from pressure and void of any set guidelines, Space Mountain operates as a private nonprofit with a board of directors. The twist is that they don’t apply for grant money and instead rely solely on private donations.

The space has no brand and is intended to have no affiliations with outside organizations.

“We are interested in letting Space Mountain evolve on its own, whichever direction it takes shape,” says creative director Autumn Casey. The name itself may conjure up memories of that fantastical ride at Disney World. But it’s not about that ride in Mickey Mouse ville, although magic sprinkles boast the atmosphere. Apfel explained that she had the idea before the name, and simply referred to it as ‘the space’ when talking to Casey during the planning process.

Eventually, the two blurted out the name. “I sad ‘space’ and she said ‘mountain,’ so the name came to us organically,” explains Casey.

The 1,000-square-foot venue is comprised of two rooms: the front room serves as the gallery space, and the back room is where live music goes down-- anything from noise and punk bands can be found sounding off here. On the outside, it appears to be an unmarked storefront with an entrance lined with windows. No signage is posted on the building, a nod to keeping the venue brand free.

Roky Road In 1966, the 13th Floor Elevators released “You’re Gonna Miss Me,” a rollicking, acidic two-and-a-half minute scorcher that has since become a touchstone of the psychedelic rock movement—arguably the largest stone in the legendary “Nuggets” compilation of psychedelic ditties. Instantly identifiable from its first few staggered notes, the song is such an abrasive countercultural benchmark that it’s hard to imagine it once graced Roky Erickson mainstream music charts, peaking at No. 55 on the Billboard Pop Charts. On YouTube, you can find a video of the 13th Floor Elevators performing it, poolside, on Dick Clark’s American Bandstand, as preppy students with conservative haircuts dangle their feet in the water.

The song is still a staple on the set lists of its writer, the 66-year-old Roky Erickson, but much has changed since those halcyon days. Arrested for drug use and diagnosed as a paranoid schizophrenic at the height of the Elevators’ rise, he suffered involuntary electroconvulsive therapy from numerous psychiatric hospitals. His songwriting, along with his personality, grew weirder and darker; he borrowed the burly look of a reclusive logger while intermittently releasing records, most of them compilations or live albums.

These days, Erickson is psych-rock’s version of Daniel Johnston, a tragically brilliant cult troubadour who continues to inspire younger songwriters.

Okkervil River assisted him on his last studio recording, 2010’s True Love Cast Out All Evil, and in 2008, he performed 13th Floor Elevators songs with a relatively unknown backing band called The Black Angels, from his hometown of Austin.

Now, with The Black Angels touring behind their celebrated fourth LP, Indigo Meadow, they will once again share a stage with Erickson. This time, the Black Angels are the headlining act, playing a full set of their ominous, propulsive, politically charged psych trips straight from the Nuggets playbook. Erickson, meanwhile, will be playing his first shows with his new backing band, the Hounds of Baskerville. See one psych legend pass the torch to the next at Grand Central, 697 N. Miami Ave., at 8pm.
