Welcome!
Welcome to the Purdue Veterinary Medicine 2012 Fall Conference. We are so pleased to have this year’s conference back on Purdue’s Campus where it belongs. Wednesday and Thursday Continuing Education (CE) Sessions will be held at PU Stewart Center. Friday sessions and workshops will be held at PU Stewart Center and Lynn Hall. See each workshop and special event for campus location and fees. The annual conference is designed to provide CE for the entire veterinary team. Unless otherwise noted, all conference sessions and special events are open to DVMs, veterinary technicians, students and the entire veterinary team.
CE Opportunities and Proof of Attendance
One Continuing Education (CE) credit is offered for each 50 minute session of lecture. Attendees can earn up to 26 credits of Continuing Education at the PVM 2012 Fall Conference. It is your responsiblilty to document which sessions you attend and the number of hours you receive.
Registration
Register online at www.vet.purdue.edu/fallconference or mail/fax the attached registration form. Early registration fees are available until Sept. 1. After Sept. 1, late registration fees apply. Registration will be located on the first floor of Stewart Center in the East Foyer and will be open 7:00 a.m. - 5:00 p.m. on Wednesday, Sept. 19 and Thursday, Sept. 20. On Friday Sept. 21, registration will be in both Stewart Center and Lynn Hall from 7:00 a.m. to noon. Stop by Registration to pick up your conference materials and name tag.
Conference Registration Options:
Full Conference (3 Days) provides: •Tuesday evening Pet Tribute Garden Anniversary Reception and Elanco Lecture (no fee, but registration required) •All Wednesday, Thursday and Friday morning CE Sessions •Entrance to the Exhibit Hall with complimentary refreshments •Wednesday Medicine Mixer/Auction (no fee, but registration required) Single day registrations are also available. Additional fees may be required for special events and Friday workshops. Please see each event for details.
Exhibitor Booths
Exhibitor booths will be open from 8:00 a.m. - 5:00 p.m. Wednesday, Sept. 19 and Thursday, Sept. 20 in Stewart Center 214/218. Morning and afternoon refreshments will be served in the Exhibit Hall. Plan to visit the new exhibit area frequently throughout your conference stay.
Proceedings
Proceedings are available in both PDF and eReader format at no cost to conference registrants via the PVM Fall Conference website. Registrants will receive a password via email to access the online proceedings. A flash drive containing conference proceedings also may be purchased at the registration desk for $25.00.
Fall Conference Parking
When driving to Purdue’s West Lafayette Campus, please allow plenty of travel time for parking, busy campus streets and road construction. Parking options include: shuttles from off campus locations, Grant Street Garage visitor parking and a limited number of ‘A’ parking passes. Priority 4 Paws : Mobile Surgery Unit
Friday, Sept. 21, 2012 Purdue University College of Veterinary Medicine has launched a new surgery unit on wheels that will serve the needs of animal shelters in Indiana while also expanding opportunities for DVM veterinary students. Named “Priority 4 Paws,” the new trailer, was funded with support from PetSmart Charities, the Tony Stewart Foundation, the Ryan Newman Foundation, Midmark and LifeLine Mobile. A three week elective block, “Shelter Medicine and Surgery,” has been designed to allow fourth-year students two weeks on the road with the surgery unit and one week with a veterinarian at a humane society or shelter. A formal public dedication ceremony is planned for Friday, September 21, 3:00 p.m. at the West Entrance of Stewart Center. Tours will be from 10:00 a.m. - 3:00 p.m.

Special Events Descriptions IAHF/PVM Golf Outing Tuesday, Sept. 18, 2012 Join us for a fun and exciting round of golf prior to the start of the Purdue Veterinary Medicine Fall Conference! This year’s golf outing will be held at the Purdue Ackerman Hills Course and is coordinated by the Indiana Animal Health Foundation and Purdue Veterinary Medicine. Pet Tribute Garden Anniversary Reception and Elanco Lecture Tuesday, Sept. 18, 2012
Please join us Tuesday night at 5:30 p.m. to get your conference week off to a great start as we celebrate the 5-year anniversary of the Dolores McCall Pet Tribute Garden, a Gift from the Class of 1972, located just outside of the Small Animal Hospital. After the short program, a reception with hors d’oeuvres will occur in the Continuum Café in Lynn Hall. At 7:00 p.m., immediately following the anniversary reception, the Elanco Lecture for the Center for the Human-Animal Bond welcomes Dr. Susan Prieto-Welch, Director CAPS Program, who will explore the topic of grief associated with pet loss. Dean’s Club Luncheon
Thursday, Sept. 20, 2012 Dean Willie Reed hosts an appreciation event each fall for members of the PVM Dean’s Club. Dr. Lisa Greenhill, Associate Executive Director for Institutional Research and Diversity at the Association of American Veterinary Medical Colleges, will be our guest presenter. She will speak on: Key Findings from the DiVersity Matters College Climate Survey. This year’s luncheon will be held at the Dauch Alumni Center with transportation provided from the west entrance of Stewart Center to Dauch. Transportation will leave Stewart Center at 11:15 a.m. and the luncheon will officially begin at 11:30 a.m. Note: Alumni and friends who make a gift of $500 or more during the calendar year are recognized with membership in the PVM Dean’s Club. Thursday, Sept. 20, 2012 Don’t miss this fascinating lecture about The Mountain Gorilla Veterinary Project (MGVP). MGVP is dedicated to saving the lives of critically-endangered mountain gorillas. Dr. Mike Cranfield, CoDirector of MGVP, will share captivating stories and photos about the international team of veterinarians, the Gorilla Doctors, who provide wild mountain gorillas with direct, hands-on care. The Gorilla Doctors regularly monitor the health of gorilla groups to ensure the early detection of disease and injury. When gorillas suffer from human-induced or life-threatening trauma or disease, the Gorilla Doctors stage medical interventions to save their lives. (1 CE Credit)

Saturday, Sept. 22, 2012 The new Dr. Skip Jackson Dog Jog combines the annual Road Race and the student-run Dog Jog for a great event that embraces the rich tradition and history of Purdue Veterinary Medicine. This 5K run/ walk, sponsored by McAfee Animal Hospital, attracts faculty, staff, students, alumni and their dogs. The race will begin at 8:00 a.m. from Lynn Hall and route through campus on Saturday, September 22, 2012, the conclusion of the Fall Conference week. All proceeds will go to the PetSafe Program, a community service offered by Purdue University’s College of Veterinary Medicine to meet the short-term housing needs of pets whose owners are temporarily unable to provide care. The IN Animal Health Foundation and the Purdue Veterinary Medicine Fall Conference are very pleased to partner on this year’s golf outing! Golf will be played at the Ackerman Hills Course on the Purdue University Campus in West Lafayette. The outing will feature fun games, great golf, prizes, a BBQ lunch, and appetizers after the round in the Pavilion at the course. Golf begins at 12:30 p.m. with a shotgun start. The outing’s format is a modified Florida scramble, enabling golfers of all skill levels to compete.

CHALLENGE MATCH
ENRICHING THE LIVES OF FUTURE PURDUE VETERINARIANS AND VETERINARY TECHNICIANS Indiana is known for growing many things in the rich farming soil of the Midwest. One of the State’s best commodities, though, is the brainpower of its students. At Purdue, we want to be in the best position to cultivate Indiana’s best and brightest and turn them into Boilermakers. These students will become our next veterinary practitioners, specialists, researchers, teachers, food safety and public health experts, and veterinary nurses. Your contribution to the Indiana Challenge Match can make all the difference with scholarship money specifically for these in-state students. The $6.7 million Indiana Challenge Match issued by the Purdue University President’s Office will leverage private donations with matching funds, giving students the boost they need for a bright college future. These funds were made possible by one-time gains from university investments over the past year. The match will let you establish a scholarship endowment or immediate use scholarship with a cash gift of $12,500. To encourage larger endowments, a 10 percent bonus will be added to endowments for gifts of $25,000 and higher. This will allow your first endowed scholarship to be awarded the same year it is fully funded. Indiana Challenge Match scholarships must be unrestricted to allow Purdue to award scholarships for strategic enrollment needs. A donor, though, can designate funds to the College of Veterinary Medicine, diversity programs or other Purdue University unrestricted scholarships.
