25 Days to Christmas...

I

t seems as if every year I start my December editorial with something along the lines of” I love Christmas!” I do love it - every little bit of holiday madness! I love ordering 300 Christmas cards and buying 40 tins of Belgium chocolate cookies for our clients, (and then wrapping glittery ribbon around every one!) I love picking out which Christmas stamps I want to use and decorating the office tree with red apples, glass cardinals and Santa’s ,(it’s a red themed tree !) I love visiting our advertisers and seeing all the Christmas decorations, and listening to the Christmas music playing in all the stores.

I love the carol singers downtown and the candlelight midnight church services. For me Christmas is about Luke 2:14 “…and on earth peace, goodwill toward men”.

As I have said before, it’s my mother’s fault! She made Christmas the most magical time of the year when we were children. Even if times were tough, and sometimes they were, we knew she’d manage to make Christmas memories each year. I’m about to go and buy her another musical Christmas toy. You know the kind they have at Hallmark that move and play Christmas themed songs. The kind that are amusing the first time and REALLY annoying the tenth time you push that button! It started when my father developed late stage Alzheimer’s. They made him smile and so each year I got another one and mailed it to England. Now my mum has about 15 of them. My sister gets them all out at Christmas and delights in pushing every button at once! It’s a tradition – finding a slightly funny and somewhat annoying one that will make her smile whenever it plays.

So, as this wonderful blue, silver, red, green and Christmas filled magazine goes off to the press, I am off to the mall, and the Hallmark store to work some Christmas magic on my family in England.

F

or many people there is nothing better than the good feelings we have about the Holiday season. Since I was a young child, I have looked forward to this time of the year. For me Christmas is filled with ‘magic’; the joy of giving and wonderful time spent with family, and friends. Now, that I’m married with a beautiful wife and son of my own, the best part of Christmas is sharing these feelings with them. This holiday season has been a whirlwind of excitement, glitter, and holiday festivities…did I mention glitter! By the time the magazine goes to press I will have decorated many a clients’ home for the holidays: It’s one of my favorite things to do each year! (In fact, it might be a good idea to book now for the 2014 Christmas season, as I never seem to have enough slots available for all the Holiday decorating requests I receive.)

My son Fynnton turned 3 in September, and Kendra and I really love being parents. We wake

up each day with such promise and hope for this little man that we sometimes feel like we could burst. For us, parenthood is everything it is advertised as being and we look forward to each and every moment of the journey with him. We often say we can’t really remember what we did day to day before Fynnton was here, and I can’t imagine it ever being another way. (Remind me I said that when he is a teenager.)

Ethan Allen – An American Legacy This year I have been thinking about the longstanding tradition of Ethan Allen as an American legacy in the home furnishings business: How could I translate this idea into an image for this year’s magazine cover? The first thing that came to mind was my grandmother. She was an artist, and ‘Mema’ and I would often peruse the pages of the Norman Rockwell coffee table book she loved so much. I would be awestruck by the emotionally evocative images that seemed to capture a moment in time. Each image seemed to be a part

of us…a story about our lives. What makes us who we are is the ability to be human, not masked by a smokescreen of ‘selfies’ (a picture of yourself) on Facebook or by a seemingly endless array of reality stars who try their hardest to define who we all should be. We can decide who we are to be. I learned that lesson from Mema…and Norman Rockwell.

As a tribute to these notions, and my Mema, we set up a very ‘Norman Rockwell-esque’ photo shoot. With the help of local photographer Brad Rankin, we have tried to capture a moment in my family’s life and create an image that Mr. Rockwell would have recognized. There were a few hiccups: Fynnton’s initial shock when he was told he would need to dress up like an elf and the explanation about why ‘Big Daddy’ (as he calls me) was dressed up as Santa Claus. But eventually all went smoothly and we got the shot. But, Rockwell’s images were not photographs, they were beautifully drawn pictures.

To keep everything authentic I commissioned local artist, Jeff Spicer, to paint the image in the style of Norman Rockwell. So, with the idea that nothing is more American than Ethan Allen and Norman Rockwell, a cover was born.

Dreams can come true!

One of the things I love about working with Ethan Allen is being able to bring fresh new life into my clients’ homes. I love showing them that they can live with, and around, whatever makes them happy. Many people see gorgeous photographs of home interiors in magazines and dream about their home looking just like them. But, they imagine that those magazine pictures are about as close as they will ever get to having a home look that good! Are you guilty of thinking that those beautiful furnishings and great room plans are impossible to obtain? I tell my clients to find a great interior designer and listen to them. An interior designer is here to guide and facilitate those dreams. I’m an interior designer who believes that it is my job to listen to my clients…to gather moments from their lives and translate that into a home environment that reflects who they are as people. What’s more American than that?

I have had a very special year at Ethan Allen with many wonderful clients and projects. Although sometimes I am so busy that I feel like my head is spinning I wouldn’t have it any other way – busy is how I like it. I am really lucky to have an amazing team supporting me at Ethan Allen: Amy Noles, Annette Moss and everyone who helps make it a seamless process for our clientele.

I know that they really appreciate the unique experience. In addition to my design work at Ethan Allen, I am now able to offer kitchen and bath design services for clients, through Broadway Interiors.

Shades of Kenn Gray Ever since I hosted a TV show for the Travel Channel some years ago I have looked for another opportunity in this media. he title of this article was suggested by Terry Vannerson, the director of the McCracken County Humane Society. While any animal shelter could say that this is their missions and commitment, the Humane Society is making sure that this is how they operate. It’s obvious through their programs and the care of the animals there that it really is “all about the animals!”

Remaking the Shelter Terry Vannerson became the director of the Humane

Society (HS) in May of 2012. She knew she was taking on a difficult situation that required strength and commitment.

In the past year and half extensive changes have been made to the facilities and how the Humane Society shelter is operated. “When I started, it was affiliated with the county,” Vannerson explained. The animals were not vaccinated, spayed or neutered. There had been a lot of negative publicity about the facility and changes had to be made immediately.

“The first change was to increase the adoption rate to fund the newly instituted spay and neuter program,” Vannerson told me. “If they are old enough, we spay and neuter each animal before they are adopted from our facility.” If you adopt a puppy or kitten who is too young to be spayed or neutered you will receive a voucher for this service from a local vet. The voucher will specify the month the animal is old enough to be spayed or neutered and which vet will perform the service. The cost of the voucher is included in the adoption fee.

The Humane Society has also been remodeled, repainted, and reconfigured to better serve the animals it cares for.

Each kennel space has been

fitted with new gates and latches, and the sides built up to be taller. This means larger dogs cannot jump out or climb out of their pens. The carpeting in the building was replaced with tile, which is obviously much easier to clean and maintain. Vannerson is continually looking for ways to improve the facility. She still has many plans and goals for the Humane Society, including an outdoor walking area and a new cat merengue. “When visitors come to see animals and find a pet to adopt they want to walk with them and play. We need an area where the dogs are not distracted by other animals and can bond with potential new owners,” she explained.

“Since I became director we don’t euthanize animals here,” Vannerson told me. What was once the room where animals were euthanized is now a customized area for treating sick animals: Local veterinarians see every animal that has any health issue. If, as a last resort, they must be euthanized the animals are taken to the veterinarians clinic to be put down.

“They are the doctors, I am not,” said Vannerson. “It’s a very sad moment when we have to say good bye to an animal and we do everything we can to nurse the sick ones back to health.”

What happens to an animal that is dropped off at the Society?

From the moment it enters the door of the Humane Society

every animal is taken to an assessment room, and its health is recorded. “They are weighed, vaccinated, and dewormed,” Vannerson explained. Every animal receives a rabies shot, and if they are old enough they are either spayed or neutered. Dogs in the shelter are taken outside for play and social interaction several times a day. Cats that are socialized and not feral have a room to themselves. It’s full of carpeted things to climb on and toys cats love! The animals receive regular contact with the staff who work with them individually so they are housebroken, litter box trained, etc.

Using positive reinforcement techniques, the staff and volunteers help to keep the animals comfortable and get them ready for adoption.

When someone walks in the door ready to adopt a pet into their family, the staff gauges the animal’s reactions carefully. “In the few cases we may feel that someone doesn’t ‘click’ with an animal and we’ll suggest a different dog or cat,” explained Vannerson. “I have to follow my gut instincts on what will be a good situation for the animal, because ultimately, it’s not about the people, it’s about the animals.”

boards animals too for $15 a day. If you become a yearly donor, the cost is $10 a day. Pets are walked and given group playtime, if requested.

Foster Programs “Many of our cats were having kittens here at the shelter,” said Vannerson. “Some cats are good mothers, but others weren’t taking care of their babies. We have to feed and care for them, sometimes right from birth.” Because of this, the Foster Program was born. For puppies and kittens that need around the clock care, foster families provide the loving support the animal needs until it is old enough to go back the shelter for adoption.

The Cat Pod A unique program to the Humane Society is its pod for cats are not adoptable but can function safely in the wild.”. “The pod was one of my ideas,” said Vannerson. “I didn’t want to put cats down just because they were a little wild.” A barn sits behind the Humane Society and provides a home where cats can come and go as they please. “Now, the cats know where their barn is. They have food, water, bedding, and kitty litter out there. They are well adjusted and good cats,” she adds.

Volunteer Program With only a few paid staff members, the Humane Society relies heavily on volunteers. Those who are interested can fill out an application and go through a one-on-one orientation with Vannerson. Volunteers must follow the rules of the HS and strive to help every dog and cat become a loved member of a new family.

Senior Days Wednesdays are Senior Animal Adoption Days! Animals have much to offer and make some of the best companions for the elderly. The HS believes that just as animals of all ages and abilities should have loving companions, so

should people. To help make this a reality adopters over 60 years of age, who cannot afford the full adoption fee will receive a 50 % discount on selected dogs or cats.

The Humane Society Supports the Community!

From rabies clinics and pet therapy at local senior centers, to Pet Expos and Adoption fairs, the McCracken County Humane Society is very involved in the community. They participate in the first Saturday adoption days at PetsMart and also teach and guide local school groups in proper animal care.

They also support the community in emergencies. “I am very excited that we have partnered with the local chapter of the American Red Cross,” Vannerson told me. “They came to us and asked us to partner with them in the case of a crises or a natural disaster.” During a natural disaster or emergency, as long as a cat or dog has a collar or tags on it, (or if MCHS receive information from its owner such as a short history, vet records, and information about the animal’s temperament, likes and dislikes), the Humane Society will house it until the owner can claim his or her pet.

What is cuter than a new puppy at Christmas?

Probably nothing, but this is not the optimal time of the year to introduce a new member to your home.

“A cat or dog can be a great gift,” Vannerson explained, “But caring for a puppy takes a lot of preparation and time: It’s something the family should be aware of.” Christmas is a hard time to bring a kitten or puppy into your family because emotions are high and kids are excited. There’s so much going on and you and your family will probably be busier than usual with social activities, school functions, and shopping. Puppies and kittens are animal babies, and they take as much work as a human baby when you first bring them home! It’s going to be hard to train your new pet or get them to feel comfortable when there’s a lot of chaos around. “They are great gifts, but sometimes Christmas is not the best. I encourage people, if they’re going to get a pet, to get a gift certificate and come later and get the pet that works for the family - a puppy or an older animal.” The HS really wants to find a great home for every animal in its care; one that’s just right for the family who wishes to adopt. But, remember it not about the people – for the McCracken county Humane Society it’s about the animals.”

hristmas is celebrated around the world by many different religions: It follows traditions and customs that vary from country to country, and region to region. Western traditions include decorating Christmas trees and hanging wreaths, and filling stockings with small gifts, fruits, candies or nuts. Food is often a big part of the celebration but in some countries customs including fasting. Over the years, Christmas rituals have expanded to include candy canes and Christmas cards. But, in most parts of the world religious services are a big part of the Christmas tradition.

A Live Tradition is born!

While Christians follow many different traditions and customs, the true meaning of Christmas is commonly shared around the world through the nativity. Whether it is called a 16 • December2013 www.purchasefamilymag.com

“manger scene”, “crib”, “Crèche” or “nativity”, it is all the same thing and represents the birth of the Christ child.

The nativity can be presented in many ways: Radio City Music Hall in New York City included a live nativity in their first Christmas program in 1932. It is still part of their Christmas Spectacular each year and performed by several rode shows touring the country. The performers are lavishly dressed as kings bearing gifts, shepherds tending their flocks, and angels spreading the good news. Mary, Joseph and the baby are surrounded by live camels, sheep, and donkeys as the orchestra plays “Joy to the World”. For anyone who has seen it, it is spectacular and especially moving to see it on that grand stage. It is something that remains a beautiful memory for many, many years.

The nativity is also presented on a smaller scale in towns all over the world. Some of these productions are referred to as ‘bathrobe productions’ because there is little or no money for elaborate costumes or scenery and everything must be made by church members! Wooden animals and figures crafted by individuals may be featured in the scenes. Larger churches may be able to have live animals as part of their nativity and members of their congregation participate by portraying the characters in the story of Jesus’ birth.

Whether you have the opportunity to see an elaborate production in a major city or a smaller version in a local church in your hometown, it is all about the true meaning of Christmas for Christians everywhere. It reminds us of the birth of a baby, Jesus Christ who was born in a humble stable over 2000 years ago because ‘there was no room in the inn’.

Local Live Traditions Western Kentucky residents are fortunate to have several churches in our area who present live nativities at Christmas: Concord United Methodist Church (UMC), churches in Lyon, Calloway, and Graves County just to name a few. In the 1950’s Northside Methodist Church in Paducah was widely known for presenting a live nativity. Cars lined up for blocks each night to drive around the church and see the scenes portraying the birth of Jesus. Many people in our community remember participating in and viewing their nativity. Northside UMC merged with Broadway UMC in 2009. The Live Nativity began at Broadway UMC in 2010 and has been a gift to the community each year since then.

This year, when the Christmas parades and holiday parties have passed and December 22 and 23 arrive; bring your family downtown to Paducah. Drive down Broadway between 6 - 8 p.m. see the live nativity in front of Broadway United Methodist Church.

The Resolution 5K Start Your New Year on the Right Foot

E

ach year, as the end of the year approaches December 31st, many of us make some resolutions.

They probably look a lot like the resolutions we made last New Year’s Eve: Exercise more, eat healthier, spend more time with family, give more and spend less!

Unfortunately, until these resolutions are put into action, they are nothing but good intentions. We’ve got a great opportunity to turn those good intentions into a real change by starting your 2014 off the right way at the Resolution 5K!

The Resolution 5K The Resolution 5K, which has been organized by First Baptist Church in Paducah, will be held on Wednesday, January 1 at 10 a.m., at Noble Park. There will be a 5K and a one mile Fun Run for kids. Early bird registration is $25, and on the day of the race it will be $35. Kids’ registration is $10.

Run for a reason!

All the proceeds from the race will support the church’s upcoming mission trip to Uganda. The trip will be from March 26 – April 5, 2014. Uganda is one of the poorest

nations in the world, with 52% living on less than $1.25 a day. This poverty is compounded by the devastating results of the AIDS epidemic, social and economic issues as well as political unrest. The mission group will be working with SOS Ministries in Uganda. Carson, “I love Africa,” said Carson, whose two younger siblings were adopted from Africa.

"When I was given the opportunity to serve the people in Uganda, I felt God telling me to go!"

Carson told me that the Mission team has no set goal for how much money they need to raise. “We are hoping to attract a lot of participation and to raise as much as possible,” she told me. “One we get to Uganda we will be doing VBS activities and holding sports camps for the children, and if we get enough funding, we plan to do housing projects also,”.

SOS Ministries Sufficiency of Scripture (SOS) Ministries is a unique, faithbased, organization that is dramatically impacting the people of Uganda. Founded by missionary and preacher Shannon Hurley in 2002, SOS’s headquarters are in Uganda’s impoverished Luweero District, in the remote village of Kubamitwe. SOS Ministries trains and supports church leaders, teach self-sufficiency to the community, and organizes short-term mission trips. They already offer personal tutoring in English for the people of the village and have plans for an educational campus. The first part, a primary school, was opened earlier this year. SOS helps parents understand the power of education, and promotes equality in education for boys and girls alike.

Helpful Tips on Holiday Survival

T

he holidays seem to come earlier and earlier every year -- and along with them, the stresses and strains of frenzied holiday shopping. Take a stroll through your local mall, and you'll already see symbols of the approaching holiday season. As your muscles tense with each passing day, the American Chiropractic Association (ACA) asks, "Are you ready for the holiday shopping challenge?"

Since the added demands of this season can stress the capacity of our bodies, we need to do everything we can to help ourselves. During the holiday season, we're running at absolute maximum capacity, which can lead to stress and even depression. We need to stretch and stay hydrated to increase our capacity, so we are not overwhelmed by all the extra activities. Consider the following tips to help keep you and your loved ones healthy, happy and safe this season.

Treat Holiday Shopping as an Athletic Event • Stay hydrated! Drink eight to ten 8-ounce glasses of water a day. (Coffee, tea, soft drinks and alcohol are dehydrators. Don't substitute them for water.) On shopping days, you may need to drink even more water.

• Be sure to stretch before and after a long day of shopping. When you are stressed-out, your muscles are less flexible than usual.

• Wear shoes with plenty of cushioning in the soles to absorb the impact of walking on those hard shopping mall floors.

• Make sure your clothing is as comfortable as possible. It's a good idea to wear layers, because you may be going from a cold environment (outdoors) to a warm environment (indoors).

• Leave your purse at home. Wear a light fanny pack, or if necessary, a light backpack instead. Pack only those items that are absolutely essential (driver's license, credit card, etc.).

• If you start to feel some pain, nip it in the bud.

Apply an ice bag to the affected area for 20 minutes, and then take it off for a couple of hours. Repeat a couple of times each day over the next day or two.

Plan Frequent Breaks into Your Shopping Day On average, people gain five to six pounds during the holidays and heart attacks occur more often during this time of the year. Eating a heavy meal and then running out on an exhausting shopping trip can be very dangerous.

• During a day of heavy shopping, most people should take a break every 45 minutes. Those with less stamina may even need to take breaks more frequently.

• If possible, obtain a locker. Lockers can help cut down dramatically on how much you have to carry around. You can take a load off by scheduling trips to your locker into your breaks.

• If your mall or shopping center doesn't offer lockers, try to plan trips to your car. Don't carry around more than is absolutely necessary at one time.

• When taking breaks, try to eat light foods. A salad and some fruit is a much better option than a burger and fries.

• Skip the coffee break! Coffee and sodas contain caffeine and sugar, which add even more stress to your body. Pass on the designer coffee at the java stand and keep drinking water.

Shopping With Children • If at all possible, do not bring children along on a holiday shopping trip. Most children simply do not have the stamina for such an event, and you and your child will only become frustrated with one another. Don't add this type of stress to an already stressful situation.

• Try to split "child duty" up with a spouse or another parent. They'll watch your kids while you shop, and vice-versa.

Wrapping packages while sitting on a hard floor can wreak havoc on your posture, and should be avoided.

• Always stretch before and after you wrap gifts.

Chiropractic Care Can Help If you experience pain or discomfort as a result of holiday shopping, consider a visit to your chiropractor. Your doctor of chiropractic can help alleviate your pain naturally, so you can enjoy the holiday season as it was meant to be. v

Wrapping Your Gifts When wrapping presents, it's a good idea to 'stretch the opposites. In other words, if you are leaning forward when wrapping your gifts, stretch backward when you are done.

• Since there is no "ideal" position for wrapping gifts, the most important thing to remember is to vary your positions. For example, try standing at a table or countertop for one package, sitting on a bed for another, sitting in a comfortable chair for another, etc.

• Do not wrap packages while sitting on the floor.

As it grows dark, be sure to head to the courtyard to see the lighting of the Community Christmas Tree. After the tree lighting, you can join carolers singing all the favorite Christmas carols, also held in the courtyard.

A Walk Back in Time Dickens Alley, (located behind Maple Street and between Fourth and Fifth Streets) is a walk back in time. The Alley will feature characters from Charles Dickens’ classic story, A Christmas Carol. Visitors will have the opportunity to chat with a beggar, a pickpocket, storytellers, street urchins, and even a constable. Don’t be too concerned if you see the constable locking up one of the street urchins! This is all a part of the reenactment fun and the jail is just another of the authentic scenes to be found in the Alley. As no reenactment of A Christmas Carol is complete without Scrooge, he’ll be there, along with Tiny Tim and other classic characters that will make you feel as

Dickens Alley is a long standing tradition in Murray.

Despite a brief discontinuance in 1981 when the alley’s location was destroyed in a fire, volunteers have put on this event for many years much to the enjoyment of all who attend. Not only is it an event everyone will enjoy, Dickens Alley also provides a chance for the community to give to people in need. When you buy any of the delicious snacks from vendors or stop by the Lion’s Club Chili Supper, part of the proceeds raised will be donated to a local charity of the vendor’s choice.

There is something for everyone at Dickens Alley. The little ones will want to do crafts, get their face painted, listen to the storytellers, decorate cookies, and of course, visit ‘Father Christmas’. Mom and Dad can visit CASA’s English pub to buy items they will be selling for fundraising, enjoy a carriage ride, and interact with the actors in the reenactment.

Extended Shopping Hours Deana Wright, the director of Murray Main Street, the non-profit organization which hosts Dickens’ Alley, told me why this event is not to be missed. “Everyone should come and enjoy the festivities,” she told me. “It’s a lot of fun and everyone has a really great time. It’s easy to find in downtown Murray and appropriate for the whole family. Local businesses really support the event and will have extended shopping hours on both nights. A lot of them will have special Christmas sales during the event so it’s a great time to shop for bargains. Dickens Alley has really grown a lot over the years: It’s the whole package of Christmas activities wrapped into two evenings. You have the tree lighting, caroling, Santa Claus, and a whole host of other things thrown in. We’ve really got something special going on here.” On Saturday the 7th at 7:00 p.m., everyone can look forward to the Town and Gown Community Band to wrap up the weekend activities with one of their beautiful performances.

his year, Kentuckians have a very special reason to make sure they tune into the 2014 Gator Bowl; our very own Paducah Tilghman Highschool Marching Band of Blue has been invited to perform at the game during half time!

For those not familiar with the event, the Gator Bowl is a huge college football game similar to the Rose Bowl. The Gator Bowl is held in Jacksonville, Florida, on New Year’s Day. Each year, only fifteen Marching Bands are chosen countrywide to entertain during the half time break. This year, PTH Marching Band will be attending for the first time.

Not only are they the only band representing the community here in Paducah, but they are honored to represent the whole state of Kentucky.

I had the pleasure of interviewing the enthusiastic band director, Patrick Saddler. Saddler has been teaching for over 10 years, and will be directing the PTH Band at the game. Saddler explained that upon arriving on December 27th, the band will first rehearse with 14 other bands from various states for the big half-time performance. They will also compete against the other bands for the chance to perform solo at the pre-game show. The winner of this

competition will win 10,000 dollars for their school as well as the chance to perform for over 72 thousand fans attending the game!

The PTH team has put together a show called “The Witch and the Saint”. The Saint is played by the youngest member of the color guard, Anna Henderson, who is an eighth grader and attends Paducah Tilghman Middle. Courtney Hills will play the part of the Witch. Both girls have a background in dance and take instruction at Center Stage Dance Studio. Lisa Hill, owner of the Center Stage and the PTH color guard instructor, is excited about the opportunity; “The guards have worked really hard,” she told me.

“We have students from every year; from freshman to seniors. We even have an 8th grader participating. We have a really wonderful color guard this year and they’ve won ‘Overall Highest Guard’ in two different competitions. The Marching Band also had a year full of achievement: They’ve made it all the way to state, placing 13th out of the entire state. Saddler has worked tremendously hard and the kids really deserve this.”

The marching band as well as the color guard plan to drive to Florida in two charter buses. There will be 80 kids attending together with coaches and chaperones. It’s going to take quite a bit of funding to drive all the way from Paducah to Jacksonville. The fundraising efforts are already in full swing! Saddler was thankful about the support they’ve received from the community so far and expects to raise the money they will need for the trip.

“We’ve had a good start, and are almost half way to our goal,” he said. “We’re really proud to have been given this opportunity, and we know it’s quite an honor to be asked to play at the Gator Bowl. We hope each and every one of

Eric Robertson, a senior at Paducah Tilghman High school who plays the alto in the band, is excited to be able to attend the Gator Bowl. “It’s going to be a great opportunity,” he told me. “I’m really pleased I get to finish up my last year in the Marching Band at the Gator Bowl. Keep It Clean!

Tips for healthy air quality in your home

W

inter is officially here, and with it people are spending more time indoors, sealing out the cold and damp weather with closed windows and doors. If you’re finding that your home suddenly feels stuffy or clammy, or if common colds now seem like a chronic condition for your family members, it might be time to check the airflow in your home.

Indoor Air Pollution Indoor air quality in the home plays a major role in your respiratory health, particularly if you suffer from asthma or allergies. In 1990 the United States Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) ranked indoor air pollution as "a high priority public health risk." Did you know that most homes naturally generate about 40 pounds of dust a year for every 1,500 square feet of space?

Every interior door in the home should have sufficient space beneath it to allow the return of any volume of air that is dumped into the enclosed room from the HVAC unit.

Beware of high pile plush carpet for instance. It should not sit so high that the air gap beneath the door is almost eliminated. There should be a minimum of one inch of clear air space under each interior door unit. Draft stoppers that lie across the bottom of your door may seem like a good idea, but they create capsules of stagnant air in rooms, reducing the efficiency of your HVAC system and in fact contributing to a cooler home overall as the air can’t circulate properly. If your home is drafty, solve the problem at the source with proper insulation techniques, rather than playing running back with airflow.

Properly sealed ductwork Most duct systems installed to current building codes still leak almost 30 percent of the air that flows through them.

Not only does this affect proper air flow, but it can cause other issues, as well. First, leaky ducts are inefficient. You are paying to heat and cool air that is supposed to come out of the vents in your house, not leak into the attic or crawl space. Leaky ducts can cost you an extra 10 to 20 percent on your heating or cooling bill.

Leaky ducts can cause your house to leak conditioned air to the outside, or suck unconditioned air into your home.

Either of these conditions put undue stress on your HVAC system, costs you money and can lead, to unhealthy air inside the home.

A sufficient sized air return Every central heating and air system should have an air return that is large enough for the same volume of air to return that the system puts out. A rule of thumb on the size of this opening is 1-square-foot per one ton of your system's size. The system itself works best when the air flows freely from the furthest part of the house. Many homes aren't designed to allow proper airflow, even when the return opening is large enough to accept the necessary volume. www.purchasefamilymag.com December2013 • 53

Air return shaft accessibility Wherever the return shaft is located for the HVAC system, you should take care to keep it accessible. Many homeowners place furniture in front of air returns located in walls, forcing the unit to work harder to get air, and therefore reducing how much air is pumped through the unit. As a rule of thumb, use the width of the air return vent as the measure for how far from the wall your furniture should be placed to allow proper airflow. If the air return shaft offends your interior design sensibilities, most home improvement stores carry a wide selection of cosmetically appealing options for vents.

The importance of the lowly air filter The lowly air filter is one of the most neglected parts of a central heat and/or air conditioning system, and but it vitally important. Depending on the type of filter you have, you may be able to clean it rather than throwing it away, but the important concept is to keep it clean to allow your heating or cooling unit to work the way it was designed. A cleaner filter means higher efficiency performance.

Clean or replace your filter every two or three weeks religiously, and you will be doing yourself a big favor. This one small task can add years to the life of your HVAC appliance.

Remove any floor register in your home and turn it over – if there’s a large accumulation of dust and debris on the bottom side of the register, you may want to change your filter more often.

Do not remove your air filter all together! The filter serves the important purposes of providing clean air, and stopping allergens and germs from being continuously re-circulated through the home. It also ensures that small objects pulled into a vent or dropped into a register aren’t sucked into the HVAC unit where it could cause thousands of dollars of damage.

The exception to the rule: Closed crawl space sealing Your crawl space is the only thing that stands between your living space and the earth - and the earth is damp. Crawl spaces are a primary source of excessive moisture in our region, and moisture is a leading cause of structural and air quality issues. Over 60 percent of the air in your ground floor living area comes through the crawl space. Unhealthy, moist air leaking into your home means your heating and cooling systems need to work harder too. By properly closing the crawl space you will see energy reductions of between 5 to 20 percent.

Experts used to recommend ventilating crawl spaces well – but things have moved on. Most research now shows that properly closing and sealing a crawl space is best practice for green, efficient and healthy buildings - its standard practice for Energy Star homes. Luckily, even old fashioned ventilated crawl spaces in most existing houses can be upgraded to a state-of-the-art closed crawl space which will add value and improving the performance of your home.

Try thinking about the airflow of your heating and air conditioning system as a breathing mechanism for your house: The HVAC unit is the lungs. Whether it’s you or your home, to have healthy lungs you want clean, fresh air to be circulated frequently and easily through the system.

You want stagnant, moist, or contaminated air to be removed. Obviously free air is better for you but a good airflow in your home reduces utility bills and saves energy. The HVAC unit uses the most energy in almost every home. Whether you use electrical heat or some type of flammable fuel, one of the most important things you can do to maximize efficiency of the unit is to make sure there’s good airflow through it. v

Who You Calling “Old”?

W

e all have heard, seen, or even felt the effects of aging with our body. What is your definition of “old?” Although there are commonly used definitions of old age, there is no general agreement on the age at which a person becomes old.

As our body ages we experience certain changes. Some are extrinsic, noticeable from the outside and some intrinsic, noticed within our body. If you were to ask a child their definition of an “old” person they would mostly like describe the extrinsic traits. They might describe somebody with wrinkles, wearing hearing aid and glasses, or someone who moves slowly and has gray hair, or no hair.

Our bodies experience changes with aging that include

decreases in cardiopulmonary and cardiovascular function.

We may find ourselves fatigued and breathless after preforming modest daily activities. Additional consequences of aging include altered taste and smell sensations: Eating may be as not as pleasurable as it once was. Our muscles may become weak, tight, and/or stiff and our reflexes are slower and our coordination suffers. Memory lapses often crop up at embarrassing times. Our skin becomes thinner and we have less tolerance for heat or cold. I’m sure we’ve painted a very vivid and unpleasant picture or the aging process!

Engage in Exercise!

Truthfully, most of us will experience some or all of these signs of aging in our lifetime, but we can postpone its occurrence. How? Exercise and physical activity are some of the

best ways to impede this undeservedly fearsome reputation of aging. In particular, endurance exercise (e.g. walking, running, biking, and swimming,) will fight some of the neurological and psychological changes.

We know that exercise boosts mood and improves sleep, countering anxiety and depression. It improves reflex time and helps stave off age-related memory loss. Resistance exercise using light weights or exercise machines will enhance muscle mass and strength, and preserve bone calcium. Flexibility training will help keep you supple as you age and exercises for balance will help preserve your reflexes. For instance practicing yoga can help you move gracefully, avoid injuries, and prevent the falls that cripple so many older Americans.

Resting is Rusting!

To keep your body as young as possible for as long as possible, keep it moving. Many of the changes that physiologists attribute to aging are actually caused by disuse. Using your body will keep it young. So who you calling old now? v

Finding the Perfect ‘Safe’ Toy and Gift

ecember is safe toys and gifts month. It’s a helpful prompt to keep safety in mind while we’re in the shopping frenzy this Christmas. Before you make purchases, it is essential to consider whether or not the gift is healthy and safe for your child. Be sure to check the packaging for age appropriateness and be aware of safety concerns and recent product recalls from other countries.

Pay attention to the label “Avoid purchasing toys with sharp or rigid points, spikes, rods or dangerous edges,” said Sarah Hecker, director of communications with Prevent Blindness America. “Before letting your child play with a toy, inspect it for safe, sturdy construction and explain how to use it,” said Hecker. “Do not make assumptions that your child will know how to play with it appropriately and don’t forget to perform a quick safety check before handing it over. “Look for the letters ASTM on the packaging which means the product meets

the national safety standards set by the American Society for Testing and Materials.”

“The biggest things to look for are to make sure the toys are age-appropriate and that they do not have a lot of small pieces that can break off and become a choking hazard to a small child,” said Dr. Christopher Sperry, family practice physician at Mercy Primary Care in Paducah. “Sometimes toys come with information about who they are best suited for but it’s important to use your best judgment. Read the warning label, know what ages it is safe for and make sure your child knows how to use it in the right way,” said Sperry.

Be selective when it comes to stuffed animals and plush toys. “Make sure that stuffed animals are well-made,” said Sperry. “Make sure the label says non-toxic and obviously do not buy any toys that contain materials you suspect may be harmful.” Some plush toys are filled with tiny beads of plastic or polystyrene which would be harmful if the stitching started to fail and the stuffing was ingested.

The right toy for the right age group While you may think your child is advanced for his age, do not forget to have realistic expectations.

“Make sure you are following the right age group and not buying a 12 year-old chemistry set for a 3 or 4 year-old,” said Sperry. It is important that your child has the ability to play with the toy correctly.

“Make sure he understands how to use the toy and that it meets the needs and interests of the child’s development.” If you have more than one child, while it may sound nice to encourage sharing, be careful. Keep young children away from toys meant for older children,” said Hecker.

Little parts can pose a danger Government regulations specify that toys for children under age 3 cannot have parts less than 1 ¼ inches in diameter and 2 ¼ inches long. “All toy parts should be bigger than your child’s mouth to prevent choking,” said Sperry.

Accidents do happen. “We occasionally see 58 • December2013 www.purchasefamilymag.com

somebody who has accidentally swallowed something that was not meant to be swallowed. It could be part of a toy or a ribbon from clothing,” said Sperry. These are usually preventable incidents.

“If kids swallow buttons or magnets it can cause serious stomach issues, intestinal problems and even death in certain situations. Parents have to make sure that their children do not swallow those and, if they do, that they get help immediately.”

Remember the helmet!

Safety should always come first whether it is a toy or sporting equipment. “If you buy a skateboard, roller blades, bike or tricycle, make sure you buy a helmet to go along with it,” Said Sperry.

tating and are far too frequently the result of not having the proper safety equipment: Don’t forget the knee, elbow and wrist pads!”

Indoor and craft activates are not without potential risk.

“Supervise children’s craft projects because scissors and glue can be extremely dangerous if misused,” said Hecker. In the hands of a small child, even a piece of crayon can become lodged in an ear or nose and require emergency attention. Use the age suggestions on the product label as a guide but remember that every child develops at their own pace.

Federal regulation on lead content According to the Consumer Product Safety Commission, with a few limited exceptions, all children’s products manufactured after August 14, 2011 must not contain more than 100 parts per million of total lead content in accessible parts. China is the largest exporter of toys. While you may remember recalls on toys coming from China in 2007, the country has gone to great lengths to ensure that all products are safe and do not cause harm to our children.

Remember that it is just as important to review the gifts your child receives from other loved ones and friends as the ones that you purchase for him yourself. In particular jewelry, antiques and collectibles may contain lead.

Toy recalls You can find a detailed list of toys that have been recently recalled, or have known safety issues, at the United States Consumer Product Safety Commission’s website. Just visit www.cpsc.gov/. You can also reach them by telephone, tollfree, at (800)-638-2772. Ride-on wagon toys have been associated with injuries from kids falling out of the wagon.

Snoopy sno-cone machines by LaRose Industries has caused trouble as the rivet has been reported as coming out of the machine and going into the snow cone. Softimals toy sets by Infinitoy has been associated with small parts causing choking in young children. It is worth reviewing the list because it is better to be safe than sorry.

For older kids, you may be inclined to purchase electric toys.

It is essential to check to see that they are properly constructed and wired to avoid electric shock or burns.

According to the Child Develpoment Institute, electric toys have to meet mandatory requirements for maximum surface temperatures, electrical constructions and prominent warning labels. It is a good idea to save any electric toy with heating elements for a child who is above 8 years-old.

Teens may enjoy receiving movies or video games as gifts and as a parent; you should take the responsibility to oversee the content. Exposure to violence can cause behavior

problems in kids. Consider the rating it receives but also check it out yourself.

Have a plan to ensure that your child stays safe as he plays, especially if someone is visiting or your child is with a babysitter. This means keeping a list of emergency phone numbers including the police and fire department, your pediatrician and the poison help line, 1-(800)-2221222.

Use your best judgment You know your child best so when shopping for toys and gifts this Christmas look for things that highlight their strengths or improve their weaknesses. Some toys may enhance developmental skills such as fine motor or eyehand coordination. The most expensive toy is not always the greatest. Your child may derive more pleasure from a favorite book that he reads over and over or his colorful ball that he bounces endlessly. Sometimes a family board game is a lot more fun than the latest and greatest video game. By being creative, reading the labels and taking appropriate precautions you can safely navigate your way through the gift buying season. v

Trigger Point Dry Needling New techniques in pain reduction, healing and muscle function

H

istorically, physical therapy health services have included the diagnosis and treatment of a wide variety of musculoskeletal injuries and illnesses.

As the practice of physical therapy moves forward, many complementary therapies are now considered standard care as part of a wellness plan to prevent disease and injury. A good physical therapist realizes that your whole person contributes to your health and wellness. They will work with you to explore methods that may assist you in pain reduction and expedited healing.

Many complementary therapies previously considered to be less conventional treatments are becoming popular as health care consumers desire to become more actively involved with their medical decision-making. Some exam-

ples of these are acupuncture, acupressure, diet-based therapies, biofeedback, meditation, yoga, tai-chi, reiki, prayer, essential oils and a new modality, trigger point dry needling. They do not require a referral from a health care professional.

Trigger Point Dry Needling One of the newer methods used to treat pain is Intramuscular Manual Therapy, also known as Trigger Point Dry Needling (TDN). Dry needling is a unique procedure designed to specifically target and restore muscle function, with an emphasis on improving tissue healing and restoring normal tissue function. Dry needling is not meant to replace conventional medical procedures; however, when combined with conventional treatment

options, dry needling can be a powerful method to accelerate pain reduction, healing and the restoration of normal tissue function.

Modern dry needling evolved in the 1940’s from the work of Dr. Janet Travell, (former President John F. Kennedy’s personal physician,) and Dr. David G. Simons. These physicians found that specific muscles tend to refer pain in recognizable patterns; for example, the heart will often refer pain to the neck, jaw and most commonly the left arm when it is injured or in distress. In the 1970s, Canadian physician Dr. C. Chan Gunn added to our knowledge base by showing a strong relationship between the nervous system and muscle function. More recently, Dr. Yun-tao Ma synthesized ideas from 40 years of clinical experience in biomedical acupuncture, not traditional acupuncture, with research he performed with the National Institutes of Health and the findings of Drs. Travell, Simons and Gunn.

These figures have helped shape dry needling into its modern form.

Modern dry needling is based on current medical science and research known and accepted by today’s primary care, orthopedic, neurologic and pain management physicians.

According to Dr. Ma, modern dry needling should not be confused with traditional Chinese medicine (TCM) acupuncture. TCM is based on the use of “pulses,” “coatings” and “meridians” (or channels) derived from ancient Chinese philosophy and culture.

How it Works Dry needling uses a very fine, solid filament needle to cause a small, specific injury or “lesion” in the tissue when it enters the body. The tiny needling induces injury signals the brain uses to initiate a sequence of events to replace or repair the damaged tissue with new, healthy tissue.

Needling frequently provokes a “twitch” response from the muscle. Once a “twitch” response has been elicited, the muscle fibers in that area relax, inflammation is reduced and circulation improves. As a result of these physiologic processes, dry needling can specifically address muscle, tendon and myofascial pain, and dysfunction.

Ideal for Muscle Stress Dry needling is not limited to the treatment of headaches, neck and lower back pain. According to Dr. Ma, dry needling can also be a safe means to improve physical performance in athletes by reducing the muscular stress that accumulates in the body with repetitive exercise. Muscular stress increases the body’s energy consumption and reduces efficiency, thereby negatively affecting physical www.purchasefamilymag.com December2013 • 63

performance. Pain pills may reduce pain, but are not a solution for restoring the function of an injured soft tissue.

Dear Santa – About That Pony…

W

hen our daughter Sally was 4, she spent an afternoon playing at a new friend’s house, and when my wife Betsy went to pick her up, the mom asked, “Do you live on a farm?”

“No,” Betsy said, “Why do you ask?”

“Sally told me you did. And that you have three ponies – named Betsy, Rick and Buttercup.”

“Sounds like a great life,” said Betsy, “But I’m Betsy and my husband is Rick, and we just live in a regular house on Twelfth Street. And I don't know who Buttercup is.”

I had to admire the magnitude of Sally’s whopper. Sure, she would like to have ponies, but for her this was a casual gag, not a heartfelt dream. When I was a kid, I yearned for a pony day and night; it was nothing to joke about. It was an objec-

tive that called for serious campaigning. And year after year, I pinned my hopes on Christmas.

For about six years in a row, my Christmas wish list had only one item on it – a pony! I loved animals, and I wanted to be a cowboy, so obviously I had to have a pony. Penny, the girl next door, was also crazy about horses, but we lived in spiltlevel houses on quarter-acre lots. “Horses need a lot of room,” my mom would explain. “They need a big field, where they can graze and run around.”

“Mom,” I’d say, “You’re thinking of pastures; I’m thinking of corrals. If we put a fence around our back yard, you could fit 10 horses or 15 ponies. Sure, cowboys’ horses are used to having lots of running space, but horses that belong to gamblers and gunfighters stay in livery stables and only go out when their owner has to leave town in a hurry.

They eat hay and oats and maybe some canned food, and

they do fine. Our garage would be perfect for horses like that.”

Mom was unconvinced, and Dad felt like he was already bending over backwards letting us have Cindy – a cat, which is a species that doesn’t even exist as far as cowboys are concerned. (I used to pretend Cindy was a coyote.)

Penny and I collected porcelain horses, drew pictures of horses, and pretended to BE horses. We stepped on sodapop cans so they’d crimp onto our shoes, and we’d scrape and clank along the sidewalk trying to approximate a ‘clip clop’. We named our bikes “Red” and “Cyclone” and spoke encouraging words to them when we rode uphill. In the back yard we practiced roping them. One Halloween, Penny’s dad, who was an art teacher, made us a beautiful two-kid horse costume. It had a tall sculpted-cardboard head, yellow yarn for mane and tail, and a brown chenille bedspread for the body. But as for actually owning horses, Penny and I might as well have been wishing for mammoths.

Every December my mom would read me a short story called “A Miserable Merry Christmas.” It was about a little boy who wanted a pony so much that he told his folks, “If I can’t have a pony for Christmas, give me nothing.” On Christmas morning, he receives no presents. He weeps quietly while

his mom shoots accusatory looks at his dad. But then along comes a man to deliver the pony.

The first few times I heard it, I thought it was a great story.

The author seemed to address my condition and offer hope to any child who wants a pony that badly. But I did want one that badly, and by the time I was 10 my vicarious joy was turning sour, and I realized the story didn’t make sense the way stories are supposed to. The years passed and, not having a pony, I failed to become a cowboy.

A while ago I found that old story in a Christmas anthology and discovered why the story had been so pointless – it was not properly a story at all, but an excerpt from Lincoln Steffens’ autobiography. It had been presented by Steffens merely as one of the doggonedest incidents of his childhood. Nevertheless, nostalgia caused me to read it to Marie and Sally, ages 7 and 4. Afterward I told them that I’d been like that boy. Marie sympathized, “That’s too bad, Daddy. But I don’t want a pony. I want a dog.”

Sally said, “I don’t want a dog; I want a live chicken that lays golden eggs. Do you still want Santa to bring you a pony, Daddy?”

“Yep, and jingly spurs,” I said.

reater Paducah Sustainability Project or GPSP RecycleNow is in our sixth year of operation. The Greater Paducah Sustainability project was formed as an organization in November 2006. Working through the formalities and logistics to launch our first event took five months with our initial collection event scheduled to support Earth Day 2007. The event was held in the Park Ave Kroger’s parking lot but quickly grew too large for this venue. Thanks to the City of Paducah and Paducah Water, we were able to relocate the operation to 1830 North 8th Street, where we currently service the public’s recycling needs.

The 1 million plus material recycled includes over 100,000 pounds of electronics diverted from local landfills. We owe this success to the hundreds of recycling supporters in and around the City of Paducah / McCracken County.

Our current operation yields about 100 ton or 200,000 pounds each month from approximately 1,400 customers.

You can imagine what our totals would be if more people joined us in our local recycling efforts.

As many of you will have heard, Paducah Water has expanded its facilities and requested that we relocate our recycling center. We have been working with The City of Paducah to

find a suitable permanent site for GPS RecycleNow. Paducah Water has graciously extended the deadline to find a new facility through the end of March 2014. To date, we have held several site visits and meetings with the Mayor, and City Manager. Our goal is to ensure that our new facility and location supports future recycling needs in Paducah, McCracken County, and if possible, our neighbors in Western Kentucky.

We work hard to be an important part of the local community, providing educational opportunities, in addition to waste reduction and handling. GPSP RecycleNow developed an online collection of coloring pages that can be accessed by everyone, printed and used for fun or to support school lessons about recycling.

Reducing Waste Handling Cost in the community GPSP RecycleNow works within the community providing support to other non-profits and organizations. For example, we provide a recycling container to the Community Kitchen. We help them reduce their total waste and the cost of extra trash services. We also work to keep Paducah area events cleaner by providing recycling at BBQ on the River, LowerTown Art & Music Festival, Fund raising events and events such as the Dragon Boat Races. We are available to provide recycling services at any event that uses plastic cups, aluminum cans, paper or cardboard, etc. Just contact us to see how easy it is to keep your event cleaner and greener by providing the option to recycle. Not only is this better for the environment but it’s a service many event goers are looking for.

What’s ahead for GPSP RecycleNow? GPSP RecycleNow still needs to find a new/different facility.

Our collection rate has slowly grown and stabilized at approximately 200,000 pounds per month. For a grass roots effort, this is impressive. Moving forward means doubling or tripling the collections. And we hope to do this with curbside recycling. GPSP RecycleNow was founded on the concept that our organization would bring about curbside recycling and it is an option that has been discussed many times by city leaders.

To date, we have had a lot of success in making recycling an option for everyone in the Purchase Area. In order to improve and expand our operations, GPSP RecycleNow

needs to raise a significant amount of money to help with the relocation costs. The target goal is $50,000 to support the cost of installing and upgrading the electrical service to accommodate the $500,000 of recycling equipment we have acquired in the last 5 years. We also need these funds to help move equipment into the new facility. We need to maintain the collection of recycled materials throughout the transition to the new facility thus providing a seamless transition to our customers.

New therapy For Parkinson’s Disease

M

ore than 500,000 Americans are living with Parkinson’s disease, according to the National Institutes of Health. Those affected know all too well the challenges that come with facing such a complex disease. Parkinson’s occurs when there is a decline in the production of dopamine in the body. The lack of dopamine can cause movement, voice and mood disorders. Diagnosis isn’t as easy as taking a blood sample. The doctor will observe the patient and ask them to perform some simple tasks and movements in the office. Diagnosis is reached by patient history and observation.

According the National Parkinson’s foundation, there are signs to look when wondering if the disease is present. No single sign should be alarming but when several are apparent, a visit to the doctor might be needed. Some of those

signs and symptoms include a tremor or shaking when relaxed and trouble moving or walking, such as taking small steps or having stiffness when moving. Additional symptoms include small handwriting, a low voice, loss of smell, trouble sleeping, constipation, a masked face and stooping

The Lily Pad Daycare for medically fragile children

F

amilies of children with complex medical conditions face many challenges. One of these challenges includes who will care for the children while the caregivers are at work or attending school. Daycare can be an intimidating place for a family with a typically developing child; this rings even more true for families of children with developmental delays and complex medical conditions. Understanding how difficult it is for parents to leave their children in someone else’s care, ESWKY made the decision to implement a specialized child care program with qualified health professionals to care for these children.

Until now, parents with a medically fragile child did not have options for care in our region of far Western Kentucky.

“Our main focus is finding families that can benefit from our services,” said Jessie Meiser, Director of Nursing at the Lily Pad. “This is a new resource for the area,” said Meiser. “We want to make sure that families are aware of all the services

we offer here; whether it’s childcare every day or just a couple of hours a few times a week, this is the place for your medically fragile child.” Meiser is a graduate of the University of Kentucky and has a Nursing degree. She will graduate in May 2014 with a Doctorate of Nursing Practice. “I was an emergency room nurse for seven years,” Meiser explained. “I have spent the past three years in the pediatric emergency department at the University of Kentucky.” Meiser joined The Lily Pad in May 2013.

Who We Serve Easter Seals West Kentucky offers childcare for typically developing & special needs children in its all-inclusive childcare facility. The Lily Pad at Easter Seals West Kentucky is proud to now serve children with complex medical issues.

“The Lily Pad serves children with health care needs that might not be ideal for other daycares or schools,” explained Meiser “It’s the first program of its kind in Kentucky west of

Louisville, and serves children in Paducah and the surrounding counties. The kids we help often require a more medically based setting than is offered at other daycare facilities, but we also want the children to have fun and not feel like they are in a hospital setting while in our care. We worked extremely hard to create an atmosphere with just the right balance. The Lily Pad gives parents the opportunity to maintain employment and have exceptional care for their children. We serve children with multiple medical conditions and offer before, and after school care as well as a summer program for those children who are able to attend school throughout the day.”

The Lily Pad is open 7:00 AM to 5:30 PM, Monday through Friday and accepts all payers including Medicaid and private pay. The staff to student ratio is very low; 3 staff members, (which include both professional and auxiliary staff,) to every 6 kids. Staff includes registered nurses, certified nurse aides, and child development associates. There is collaboration from all staff to provide an environment that facilitates learning and medical stability. “If a child qualifies based on a referral from a physician the service can be covered through Medicaid or private insurance and at no additional charge to families,” Meiser stated. Meiser is always available to assist clients and their families with insurance forms, physician referrals, etc. “We look at every child on an individual basis both their education plan and medical plan,” she explained.

“We create an individualized protocol of care in collaboration with the caregivers and primary care physicians. Goals are created in multiple developmental categories, and are based on the family’s current needs and concerns for the child.

Three Avenues of Help Easter Seals West Kentucky PPEC services provides three types of care which will include: Daily skilled nursing, therapeutic, developmental intervention & family support resources and training. The PPEC program primarily serves children from birth through age 12, but children up to age 20 are accepted on an individualized basis. Local physician Dr. Cecil is the Medical Director for The Lily Pad. “Every day the children attend they are assessed by a nurse when they arrive,” explained Meiser. “By doing this we are able to reduce potential exacerbations of conditions and future emergency department visits.”

A Custom Built Facility The Lily Pad is located in a ground level, fully accessible facility designed for families and children. With an inviting front entrance to the secured, child friendly interior, the center hosts four classrooms and a treatment room, a large indoor gross motor room, and a fully accessible outdoor playground. This creates the perfect location for families with multiple needs.

ESWKY currently has several fully functioning programs that are utilized by The Lily Pad. Therapeutic intervention is the main focus of services at the Lily Pad. Licensed therapists are available to children who attend the Lily Pad and require Occupational Therapy, Physical Therapy, Speech Therapy, and Behavioral Therapy.

ESWKY Child Development Center also participates in the Kentucky Department of Education, Child and Adult Care Food Program giving The Lily Pad the ability to meet approved dietary needs, special food preparation, and services of a registered dietitian for children enrolled in the PPEC program.

They can meet the needs of children who need tube feedings, have allergies, or require special food preparation.

Connecting Positively During the Holidays

T

he Christmas season is a time of great expectation.

Decorations, food, time away from work, and gifts become the focus of the holidays. These activities can either be connecting or disconnecting and as humans we are designed to be in relationship with our community. If weâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;re feeling disconnected from the community we may experience frustration, disappointment, and even despair. Connection with friends and loved ones leads to joyfulness, satisfaction, and peace of mind. With these thoughts in mind, here are five tips for making connections during the holiday season.

Play Games Family games are a great way to engage others. These games should focus on interaction with each other. When choosing a game, it is important to understand the personality of your family. Some families will like games that focus on a common goal (e.g., puzzle, Hoopla), whereas other families will enjoy

the challenge of gaming against one other (e.g., cards, Pictionary, Qwerkle). If you choose a game that fits your familyâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s personality, it can be a great bonding experience.

Serve Others Your work, their school, our church has another party, and with it, the obligation to bring something. One of the best ways to create family community during the holidays is to focus on serving others. Instead of investing dollars, invest time and thoughtfulness into gifts like baked goods or homemade ornaments. These are gifts that your family can participate in creating together. The memories from this experience can be translated into holiday traditions.

Decorate Together Holiday decorations are beautiful. Many of these decorations have been painstakingly placed. Many hours have been devoted to getting everything just right.

For others, dealing with extended family has created scars that continue to remind them of painful experience. Instead of feeling the obligation to “go and see” everybody during the holidays, set boundaries for healthy interactions. Use tools like Skype and FaceTime to connect with family members that are far away. This will create a safe environment for all and continue to allow for connection.

Take the Stress out of Giving Gifts All persons who are gift givers at heart love to see the joy on the receivers face. Gift giving in holiday times can often look like a nuclear arms race; there are never enough! Instead of making gift giving a burden, try focusing on three gift areas: 1) Family time or family experience (e.g., concert tickets, puzzles, or theme park), 2) Needed item (e.g., clothes, socks, shoes, underwear…what?)

3) Wanted item. This will bring the focus on the holiday back to the community.
