Cinderella Man Heroes aren't born, they are made. Heroes are not the people who always win and get their way in life, but rather they fight back from their substantial failures and losses. James Braddock was an inspirational hero that citizens suffering through the Great Depression looked up to for motivation and hope in the film, Cinderella Man. He inspired Americans to strive forward and not give up as they witnessed him overcome many hardships that related to their own personal struggles. The United States began transitioning into an urbanized society and into the Gilded Age during the 1880's through the 1920's. She is dressed very wealthy, has expensive jewelry, drinks alcohol, and has a bob cut. These were the qualities of the new woman compared to the previous traditional woman's beliefs and ways of life. James Braddock's luxury lifestyle, including his family, home, and wealth, represents the 1920's atmosphere of growth and the booming time that was soon to vanish from the Great Depression. The Great Depression was a period of time consisting of widespread panic and economic depression in the United States due to the stock market crash. As seen in Cinderella Man, the movie shifts to four years later of the start of the Great Depression. A newspaper on the ground states that more than fifteen million became unemployed. The song, Cheer Up, Smile, Nertz!, that was played in the beginning of this opening scene describes the Great Depression's hardships sarcastically as, "Cheer up, gentle citizens, though you have no shirts, happy days are here again. Cheer up, smile, Nertz! All aboard prosperity, giggle 'till it hurts! No more bread–line charity. Cheer up, smile, Nertz!" Personally, James Braddock's life drastically begins to downfall when he decides to fight with a broken hand. His manager deeply encourages Jimmy not to fight and to just go home, but Jimmy refuses after arguing he needs the money and to, "Go home with what, a broken hand?" The main plot of the story starts with a successful boxer in the roaring twenties. James J. Braddock fought his way to becoming the best–known boxer ever. He is a very well known boxer in his day. The Great Depression takes a toll on everyone in the country. James has lost pretty much everything he worked his life for. This did not stop James from trying his best to provide for hisfamily and even got the chance to fight in the ring once again. This has become the best comeback in the face of great hardships. In The Jungle, Jurgis and his family are immigrant workers that moved to the United States to live the American Dream. Throughout their journey in the United States, the family suffers from illness as well as accidents in the workforce. The family is trying their best and working hard to understand what it takes to live in America as an immigrant. Jurgis experiences the hardships of working and also providing for a newborn baby that Ona has just given birth to. Jurgis has lost his grandfather, Dede Antanas, to an accident while he was working, and knows that it is going to happen, but works hard the best he can. In the film, Cinderella Man, James has boxed his way to the top, but also experiences the hardships of needing to provide for his family during the Great Depression. He has to give his children to Mae's family to help take care of them as they figure out how they will pay for their bills. Suddenly, James is awakened by a second chance. Joe has found him a fight, not for as much money as James would like, but enough to help get back on his feet and hopefully pay as much of the debt back that he can.
