Recently, LHS celebrated the achievements of .. two students, Yosef Glenn D. Marapao and , GJ Jeremias S Famero, for their participation in the Philippine International Mathematical Olympiad (PHIMO) from September 20-23 and the National Mathletics Contest (NMC) on October 20, respectively
Yosef, from 10-Bookkeeping, shared that he wanted to give back to LHS for helping him improve his skills He found the preparation challenging but managed to learn difficult topics despite initial doubts Yosef expressed pride in his accomplishments, stating, “I would say I feel accomplished, as my achievements exceeded my expectations,” and he is eager to participate again

Meanwhile, Sir Zacky Taplac, the adviser of LHS’ Eureka Mathematics Coordinating Club (EMC) gave insights into the process of both contests and the hardships that they faced “Madami Madaming hardships Madaming difficulties noong training ” , he responded

On the other hand, GJ Famero of 8-Loyalty, is another promising student that represented LHS in the National Mathletics Competition (NMC)
He says that his mother and his mentor, Sir Zacky Taplac were the catalysts that led him into representing LHS in the NMC “My mother was the one who led me to pursue the opportunity to represent our school She always told me to grab opportunities whenever I had the chance
Also, my mentor, Sir Zacky, already put me as a participant in the competition ” , he explained
GJ recalled a challenging question that frustrated him during contest practice “The hardest part of the contest by far was the one question in which I tried every solution possible but none of it worked ” , he stated “I proceeded to think that the question itself was flawed ” , he said
He also recalled a question which he had forgotten how to solve “There was also one part that required me to solve it, but it needed the formula which I totally forgot.” he added.
Despite facing challenges during the contest preparation, he felt accomplished “I received an amazing result It also feels more fulfilling because my preparation paid off,” he said He was satisfied with his placement, noting, “I did really well despite limited preparation time, But, there is still room for improvement so I think I can definitely improve and get more achievements in the future ” When asked about future participation, he expressed enthusiasm: “I wish to grab every opportunity I get and make use of it
“First ‘ yung paano namin i-schedule ‘ yung review na face-to-face Medyo mahirap kasi ‘ yung setup na online, mas effective pa ang face-toface Maraming oras sila sa schedule nila sa academics, tapos may mga extracurriculars pa sila, sa org nila, sa other activities pa, sa projects, so ang unang problem talaga is, how to get this schedule na free ako, free ‘ yung mga contestants ” To address the issue, the team began conducting online reviews on weekends, though this still posed challenges
“And then, another difficulty is, ‘ yung resources namin Ang goal dapat namin is ma-explore namin sila sa mga questions ng mga users, dahil iba-iba ‘ yung trending questions na binibigay ng mga quizzers ” Participants will share contest questions with Sir Zacky or the group to learn and pass knowledge to future generations
Reflecting on the overall experiences on the contests, Mr Taplac responded, “Maraming frustrations Maraming times na makukuha na dapat namin, pero hindi Satisfied ba kami sa mga result? Depende Depende sa contest kung nag-effort kami tapos hindi namin nakuha or sometimes hindi kami nag-effort and hindi rin kami nakuha So, hindi naman kami naghahanap ng maayos na result kung ganoon ”
Sir Zacky also emphasized the relevance of practice and preparation for the contestants
“You have to master, memorize, para in times na complicated na ‘ yung questions maaapply nila kaagad ”
Overall, Yosef Marapao and GJ Famero’s achievements in their respective contests serve as an inspiration towards the students of LHS their achievements serve as proof of their hard work and resilience
As they look forward into their LHS career, they become models for the future LHSians, encouraging them to embrace hardships and strive for academic excellence in their pursuits

On the other hand, GJ Jeremias Famero accorded his challenges compellingly as he participated in the National Mathletics Challenge last October 20, 2024 together with Zianne Revilo Ortiz and Maria Zipphora Gonzales, who willingly represented PUPLHS in the contest proper He described the event as “intense,” as 1000+ students from different schools contended. Even so, he earned a silver award for his competency, which was triggered by trials he had to encounter.
Similar to Yosef’s situation, GJ stated that he didn't know how to start answering the difficult questions as he only encountered them that time He had to keep in mind the formulas that required further understanding on how to use them in answering problems in the test Their true nature of being math wizards awakens in these occurrences, (;) only the certified math professionals could infer these activities
“Behind every successful athlete, there is a responsible coach”, a quote once stated by Paul Bamikole, is a quote linked to Yosef and GJ both trained by math professionals “The knowledge they shared with me really guided me ” But who are these strivingly responsible coaches? As a token of gratitude, the awarded students embedded within their minds the support and guidance they have received from their kuyas, classmates, and their adviser, Mr Zacky Taplac Eureka Mathematics Coordinating Club’s adviser Yosef’s appreciation for Sir Zac and his classmates fostered the importance of unwavering support and trust his companions have for him “Kahit maliit na bagay lang ‘to, I owe everything to you guys. ” As for GJ, he recognized the significance of his tutors kuya Rejirey Fernandez and kuya Zianne Ortiz and the guidance they’ve brought to him. “...I will do .

e still have a few months to go before the 2024 Pacific Typhoon Season comes to an end Who knows?
Many factors can go unpredicted when it comes to Meteorology Let’s take a look at the information about the storm that just impacted the Philippines Tropical Storm “Trami”, locally known in the Philippines as “Severe Tropical Storm Kristine” is the 20th named storm of the annual 2024 Pacific Typhoon Season Initially, the storm was originally a low pressure area that formed just by Guam Subsequently, the circulation got embedded into an elongated area of low pressure known as a trough This trough extended from the Philippines to the west of Guam The trough would then alter the path of Trami towards the Philippines Trami would later become a tropical depression heading westward and into the Philippine Area of Responsibility (PAR) Afterwards, Trami would intensify into a tropical storm and would be named “Kristine” by the Philippine Atmospheric, Geophysical, and Astronomical Services Administration (PAGASA), officially becoming the 11th tropical cyclone to enter the PAR On October 23, 2024, as Kristine (Trami) is about to make landfall in Northern Luzon, Kristine would intensify into a Severe Tropical Storm (STS), resulting in PAGASA declaring a Tropical Wind Signal No 3 on areas that were in the direct path of Kristine; mainly in Northern and Central Luzon and areas that were in close proximity were rated Tropical Wind Signal No 1, and 2
Being prepared is always lifesaving as many things can go unexpectedly during a storm Flood water seeping in your floors can be terrifying, but time isn’t your friend right now, as floods can rise dangerously fast A key factor for these floods to rise is when it’s high tide as high tide can elevate the flood more than if it were a low tide That is why floods are more deadly when it’s a high tide Saving your belongings is also an important thing to do when flood water seeps in It is important to put your belongings in a more higher area Mainly, electric wires or other objects with electric properties such as electricity and water are not good friends
But it is strongly advised to do so even before it starts flooding But also don’t forget to drive your vehicle to a more elevated area, safe from floods Insects can also be really annoying when there is a flood since these little critters can enter your home, serving it a place to stay, and to protect their lives Finding the holes where they enter and sealing them can relieve your annoyance when times of floods
Lastly, if submerging into flood water is necessary, it is important to consider avoiding electric poles, whereas there are cases of people getting electrocuted from these electric poles
PAGASA uses the Tropical Cyclone Wind Signal (TCWS) System in order to warn the public about the strong winds a Tropical Cyclone may harbor, which is leveled into 5 categories With Tropical Wind Signal No 1 being the weakest, and No 5 being the most dangerous As Kristine was a Severe Tropical Storm, the highest rating was TCWS #3
Tropical Cyclones are dangerous in many forms and a storm surge is a very dangerous effect of a Tropical Cyclone Flash flooding may occur which can leave people in a highly vulnerable situation, especially people on low ground Flooding can also threaten life and property in many ways As flood water can carry sharp shrapnel and objects from buildings, people can get lacerated from these Flood water contains many bacteria - leptospirosis being the most common People or animals may get electrocuted from flood water that carries electric currents from electric poles And lastly, people may get swept by the currents of flood water and drown We should not only consider floods as our only problem Dangerously fast winds that a storm acquires can also carry stray dangerous materials in the air Getting impacted from these, you will definitely sustain injuries
Kristine would have then exited the PAR and headed westwards of Vietnam Trami (formerly Kristine) is forecasted to dissipate after impacting Vietnam Now that you have some knowledge about Tropical Cyclones and their dangers, this may come in handy when you are actually in these situations
What is NYSTIF? NYSTIF was an event organized by the Department of Science and Technology (DOST) about Science, Technology, Engineering and Mathematics (STEM) with the theme STEM VIBE: Engaging the Youth in Providing Solutions and Opening Opportunities This event s objective was to promote involvement in science and technology through multiple activities, exhibits and learning opportunities in a vibrant innovative brilliant and engaging (VIBE) process

Some other booths showed more information abou Sterile Insect Technique (SIT against Dengue, From Canopy to Canvas: Exploring the Science and Art o Leaves which is a workshop that lets people gain awareness on the importance of sustainable forestry practices Volcanic and Earthquake Hazards, wood identification Bamboo Musical Instrument (BMI) Innovation and R&D Program, Digitelazation, Safatos Program, Collaborative Robots, Additive Manufacturing (3D Printing) Technology and Supervisory Control and Data Acquisition (SCADA) Overall, ATOMOS had lots of fun in the PICC Science Event while gaining new knowledge about science

Kaniyang kasipagan, aming hinahangaan
