Statement by the Prime Minister of Canada on Vaisakhi

he Prime Minister, Justin Trudeau, today issued the following statement on the occasion of Vaisakhi: “This week, the Sikh community in Canada and around the world will celebrate Vaisakhi, the holiest day in the Sikh calendar. “Vaisakhi celebrates the creation of the Khalsa by Guru Gobind Singh Ji in 1699. Friends and family will gather to read sacred texts at Gurdwaras and participate in lively Khalsa Day parades.

“Sikhism is rooted in teachings of equality, unity, selfless service and social justice – the very values which we all strive to incorporate in our daily lives. Moody’s affirms British Columbia’s Aaa rating and stable outlook

oody’s Investors Service has affirmed British Columbia’s Aaa credit rating and stable outlook, thanks to the province’s diverse economy and strong fiscal management, Finance Minister Michael de Jong announced today.

“B.C.’s continued highest rating shows that this province is on the right path,” said de Jong. “We are controlling spending, attracting investment and diversifying markets for B.C.’s goods. ast year, I received an e-mail telling me that I owed the Canada Revenue Agency money. I’d seen lots of e-mail scams written in poor English asking me to send money to faraway places, but this one kind of sounded like government. More recently, someone from an Ottawa number called posing as a CRA agent threatening jail time. At the time, I felt silly that I would wonder for a moment whether these were scams.

To help raise awareness the Canadian Federation of Independent Business conducted a survey of business owners that gives unique insight into how prevalent the problem is.

One in five business owners have been a victim of fraud in the past year, and another 30 per cent have had fraud attempted on their businesses. Not surprisingly, over 40 per cent did not report the fraud that is considered too time-consuming for its potential benefit.

The estimated average cost of fraud is $6,200, and most — 92 per cent — do not recover the full cost. The most common types of scams include payment fraud, e-mail scams and phishing (designed to trick victims into providing sensitive information or transferring money), and directory fraud where payment is demanded for a service that was never ordered

Some other examples of fraud from business owner comments to the survey:

• While the CRA may take legal action to recover money owed, they will not threaten you with immediate arrest or a prison sentence.

“Our e-mail was hacked into, telling one of our customers to pay their invoice to a U.S. bank account.”

• If you want to validate whether something is legitimate, go to the government website to find a contact number and call to confirm.

“Someone hacked into our phone system and made overseas calls to a pay-per-minute site until it was red flagged by our phone provider and they shut down the service, but not until over $3,000 had been charged against our account, which we had to pay.”

Directory Scams

• Carefully inspect the company name on the invoice, as often it will seem familiar but there will be a slight variation from the legitimate directory name.

• Do not call the number on the invoice you have received if you have doubts; instead, do a separate search for the actual company’s phone number. Call them and reference the invoice number to confirm the invoice is valid.

Fraudsters are getting more sophisticated and a small investment in learning what the current scams are can save you lots of headaches and, in my case, give me extra confidence as I hang up the phone on CRA imposters.

Payment fraud

Scammers tamper with point of sale terminals to steal money or customer information. To prevent this: • Keep terminals put away when not in use, and secure them when closing.

• Don’t let a fraudster posing as a customer block your view of the terminal.

• Check terminals regularly for pry marks, missing screws or broken parts.

2) Phone and e-mail scams • Hang up the phone or delete the e-mail if you suspect a scam.

• Know that CRA and your bank will not ask

MRC Sports Complex Open for Athletes he MRC Sports Complex, a partnership project between the City of Abbotsford and the Abbotsford School District is officially ready for athletes and sport enthusiasts of all ages, announced Mayor Henry Braun today.

“We are very excited to see the completion of this new sports field complex for our community,” said Mayor Braun.

“Adding three artificial turf fields to our inventory increases field usage time by over 60 hours per week for the community, which ensures our children and youth all have access to the amenities they need to lead a physically active lifestyle.”

Converting natural turf fields and all weather fields to synthetic turf fields provides additional hours of use for the community and schools. Synthetic turf fields can be programmed for 12 hours per day, seven days per week for a total of 84 hours of use, compared to the recommended 20 hours per week for natural turf fields.

“These new fields provide wonderful new fitness and sports opportunities,

not only for the two adjacent schools but other schools in our district,” noted Abbotsford Board of Education Chair Rhonda Pauls. “This sports complex is a win-win for the community and the students in our schools.”

The MRC Sports Complex provides use for a variety of sports including soccer, football, field hockey, field lacrosse and rugby. The complex also has a warm up area for teams, team shelters, a skateboard park, water fountains, accessible parking lot, paved walking paths and is lighted for evening use. The complex has been designed so a fieldhouse/ change room facility can be added in the future.

Attorney General blurs the lines between what is Liberal Party business and what is Government business: Cooper

onservative Deputy Justice Critic, Michael Cooper, today questioned why a prominent Toronto law firm is hosting a private fundraiser for Canada’s Attorney General.

World Health Day: beating diabetes

H

ealth Minister Terry Lake has issued the following statement for World Health Day, April 7, 2016: “Diabetes affects over 400,000 British Columbians of all ages, from all walks of life.

With this in mind, our government supports the goals of World Health Day, which are raising awareness and looking for ways to prevent, treat and care for people living with this disease.

“Hearing your doctor tell you that you have diabetes is life changing. Diet changes, medications and visits with healthcare professionals become the new norm. There will be many questions that come up along the way, but patients and their family can benefit from the many supports and resources available to help prevent or manage the disease.

“New provincial standards for diabetes care in school give parents the reassurance that their child will receive the support they need while at school. Recognizing that moms and dads can’t be everywhere all the time, these standards help and train staff to administer diabetes medications for children who are too young to safely do so themselves.

“As children age, diabetes continues to need managing, which is why the Province extended coverage of insulin pumps for patients 25 years of age and under in 2014. This provides important support for those transitioning into early adulthood.

“For adults, government provides an incentive payment for doctors, to support them in offering continuous care for their diabetes patients. And, we are increasing screening

rates. In fact, about 85% of adults in B.C. over the age of 45 have now been screened for diabetes.

“British Columbians are covered more widely than in many other provinces for their diabetes medications and supplies, thanks to our PharmaCare program. “While the Province does have supports in place, there is a bigger question that needs to be asked: How can we support British Columbians in taking charge of their own health to manage the disease or even prevent it in the first place?

“Chronic disease is the largest contributor to B.C.’s healthcare costs. It’s troubling that younger generations are in danger of being the first to live

shorter lives than their parents. Just as concerning is a study that found Type 2 diabetes is now more prevalent among children than Type 1 diabetes.

FU scientists develop effective lures for trapping brown rats

Simon Fraser University scientists have developed a new way to exterminate rats by identifying and synthetically replicating the male brown rat’s sex pheromone. The chemical is a powerful attractant for luring female brown rats into traps.

At a time when rat populations around the world are inflicting serious harm, understanding rat behaviour and preferences is important. Rats spread disease and allergens, diminish agricultural crop yields, and threaten animals and endangered seabirds. The brown rat is the world’s most common rat, and its population is growing, in part because rats have evolved to avoid newly placed traps in their natural habitat.

SFU biologists Gerhard Gries, Stephen Takács and Regine Gries, research chemist Huimin Zhai say their latest pheromone discovery overcomes that trap-avoidance behaviour.

In the lab, and in field experiments, female brown rats readily enter trap boxes baited with the male brown rat’s sex pheromone.

“We’re beginning to speak rat,” says Gerhard Gries, professor of biological sciences and NSERC Industrial Research Chair in Multimodal Animal Communication Ecology at SFU. “We’re beginning to understand their pheromones (chemical attractants), we understand their sound communication and can reproduce it, and we understand their food preferences.”

The discovery forms part of a promising three-pronged rat control tactic the researchers are developing that exploits the rats’ own communication system. It promises to enhance rat capture tenfold or more, and to eliminate poison-bait stations that kill rats and the predators that eat them.

The scientists’ rat pheromone research was published last week in the academic journal Angewandte Chemie, International Edition. Their rat sound research appeared in Pest Management Science a few weeks ago.

They envision using their findings to revolutionize how rats are trapped.

With the help of Pawel Kowalski in SFU’s Science Technical Center, they have already built an electronic gadget that incorporates a specially designed algorithm that can randomly and intermittently replicate rat pups’ vocalizations. And with the help of graduate student Antonia Musso they have developed a special food bait that not only attracts rats but also induces them to feed, which is necessary to trigger the traps’ capture mechanism.

By combining the effective food bait with the rats’ sex pheromone and sound signals, they expect to overcome the rats’ antipathy to trap boxes.

“The overall message,” says Gries, “is that here is some great food to eat, and here is safety, because not only can they hear “live” rats, they can also smell the male rat’s sex pheromone.

Since it seems entirely safe, they enter the trap box, feed on the bait and are killed in the snap trap.”

The research is funded through NSERC and industrial partner Scotts Canada Ltd., which holds the rights to commercialize the research findings.

The discovery comes just a year after Gries and other SFU researchers announced a successful way to lure and trap bedbugs. That trap is currently being commercialized.

Obhrai thanks Canadians for their generosity for Syria through Emergency Relief Fund Conservative Party International Development Critic Deepak Obhrai today thanked Canadians for donating $31.8 million to the Syria Emergency Relief Fund: “On behalf of the Official Opposition, I thank Canadians for donating to the Syria Emergency Relief Fund, a programme started by our previous Conservative Government.

“I also extend our gratitude to the NGOs which are engaged in providing humanitarian assistance in Syria and neighbouring countries affected by the influx of refugees.

“We ask the government ensure that no Canadian aid money falls into the hands of Islamic State fighters. The Minister of International Development has previously said that there is no oversight on the part of the Government to ensure Canada’s aid dollars don’t go to enemy combatants. This would be a great disservice to Canadians who contributed their hard-earned dollars to the Syria Emergency Relief Fund.

“Our previous Conservative government provided over $500 million dollars since the start of the Syrian war, for relief efforts and to help refugees stay closer to home and refrain from undertaking dangerous journeys while risking their lives.

“Canada has a role to play in ending this crisis. The Liberal government must invest in an increased diplomatic and political effort to resolve the conflict by neutralizing ISIS and allowing refugees to return to their homesteads.

This includes contributing to coalition airstrikes which have been effective at degrading the ability of ISIS to harm civilians and further contribute to the refugee crisis,” Mr. Obhrai said.

Try to treat each film as my first film : Vicky Kaushal Newbie Vicky Kaushal says craving for good work must persist “I have learnt that craving for good work should be there in me always... something which I had during my first film. That desire must persist in me even if I have done my 50th film. Therefore, I try to treat each film as my first film and do it with same passion. “As of now, he says, "life is going good, but I want to make it excellent". A successful actor and producer, Shah Rukh Khan says he dreads working as a film director. When asked if he ever plans to turn director, Shah Rukh told IANS: "I find it a very lonely job. SENSELESS SUICIDES ACHIEVE NOTHING : HEMA Hema Malini may be a politician but that does not stop her from being politically incorrect. Days after television star Pratyusha Banerjee killed herself, Bollywood actress Hema Malini tweeted "The world admires a fighter not a loser". "All these senseless suicides which achieve nothg!Life is God's gift for us to live not for us to take at will. We have no right to do that," she tweeted. "One must learn to overcome all odds & emerge successful, not succumb under pressure & give up easily. The world admires a fighter not a loser" was another tweet from the movie star. She then added in another tweet that adversity should be fought with strength and bravery.

I will be rebel for a cause : Shraddha Shraddha Kapoor who plays rebellious girl in her upcoming film 'Baaghi', says she will rebel for a cause she believes in. She said she doesn't approve being a rebel for no reason. "I am a rebel in some ways, but I would like to be rebel for a cause. That could be any cause I believe in.

During the launch of album 'Mere Papa,' Sonam said that her personality is like her father's and this sometimes annoys her mother. She said, "My father was very keen on me becoming an actress after I studied, but my mother was not keen at all.

So my father is very scared of my mom so that's why he was also not keen.

“My mom wanted me to complete my studies and I wanted to get into acting, but my father is the one who has supported me and encouraged me the most including my mom through my career.

I have been working since I was 21, I started assisting when I was 17-18. They have always supported me no matter what time in night I came back home, how many hours I worked, never questioned me once about it," she added.
