UFV Alumni Association Launches Chandigarh Chapter

ast week during the annual awards ceremony for UFV Chandigarh, Justin P. Goodrich, Board Chair of the UFV Alumni Association, announced to a crowd of nearly 500 guests – including students and their parents – the official establishment of the association’s first international chapter.

To date, the program has nearly one-hundred graduates, with approximately sixty-fiver percent of them remaining in Canada, with the balance returning home to India.

Nav Bains, Associate Vice-Chair, who was also a member of the delegation that traveled to India, noted the importance of ensuring

the association “does all that it can to not only foster life-long relations between UFV and its alumni, but also to leverage the experiences of our Chandigarh graduates to help support and invest in future generations of students, regardless of where they end-up in the world.”

Looking ahead, the Chandigarh campus is looking forward to exponential growth, with

an Honorary Lifetime Member of the UFV Alumni Association.

The Anti-Bullying Day The term, “bully”, may be used in many a context.

But, in the context of educational environment, it may mean: an overbearing person; one who habitually intimidates, offends, teases, or humiliates weaker students; or, a jackboot. On or around an educational complex, bullying can be face-toface, or on the internet which is known as ‘cyber bullying’.

Whatever the type of bullying, its effect or result is always negative, so-much-so that sometimes it can be fatal. Victims of bullying normally do not share their situation with their parents; rather, they keep struggling mentally, and in certain cases, this leads to a suicide. In English, such a suicide is particularly known as “bullycide”. It may be worthwhile to mention here that, according to a study conducted by the Yale School of Medicine, in 2010, it was concluded that being bullied and suicide are closely related to each other.

New debt settlement laws will protect consumers

E

from traditional debt pooling services, which set up reduced-interest repayment plans that assist consumers with eventually paying off their full debts.

The Province is taking action to regulate the debt settlement industry with amendments to the Business Practices and Consumer Protection Act (BPCPA). If passed, these amendments will prohibit debt settlement companies from charging fees until both the debtor and creditor have approved a debt repayment agreement. These amendments will also lay the foundation for additional new rules to safeguard consumers which government aims to bring into effect in fall 2015.

Many people are unable to save enough for the lump-sum settlement amount and subsequently ‘drop out’ of the program, losing any money they have already paid to the debt settlement company. There is no guarantee a creditor will accept the lump-sum settlement, although this risk is often not communicated to consumers. This can negatively affect credit scores and further accumulate debt, as late fees, missed payments and penalties build up.

Debt settlement companies typically offer to negotiate, on behalf of a consumer, lump-sum settlements with creditors for amounts significantly less than the consumer’s outstanding debt.

Consumers are often required to pay excessive, largely non-refundable fees up-front and are encouraged to stop paying their debts and instead save up for a lump-sum settlement. This differs

Crystal Gala ladies feted with style!

The Fraser Valley Health Care Foundation board and staff celebrated the achievements of the Crystal Gala Foundation on February 19 at Traceycakes Bakery Cafe in downtown Abbotsford.

The recognition event was to honour the fundraising success that has led to the establishment of the Crystal Gala Breast Health Unit in Abbotsford Regional Hospital, which sees 12,000 patients each year.

B.C. showcases tech talent at Game Developers Conference British Columbia’s video game and interactive technology sectors are taking their skills to the next level at the Game Developers Conference (GDC) that opens today in San Francisco.

The GDC is the world’s largest and longest-running professionals-only game industry event, showcasing the best and brightest in video game and interactive technology.

It attracts over 24,000 attendees from around the world, including programmers, artists, producers, game designers, audio professionals and industry decision-makers, to exchange ideas and shape the future of the industry.

Over 40 B.C. digital media companies will attend the GDC to represent B.C.’s tech sector – one of the province’s fastest-growing industries. The Ministry of International Trade is partnering with these companies and with key organizations such as Creative BC, the Vancouver

Economic Commission, the Centre for Digital Media and DigiBC to promote B.C. as a growing tech hub in North America and a global hub for video-game development.

The conference runs March 2-6, and showcases the most relevant game-development tools, platforms and services helping to drive the industry forward, including gaming consoles, smartphones and tablet devices.

You may have noticed the new protected left turn signals, barrier and other intersection improvements in Abbotsford. These are some of the 11 road improvement projects ICBC invested over $218,000 million in last year to make Abbotsford roads safer for pedestrians, cyclists and drivers.

This year marks the 25th anniversary of ICBC’s road improvement program with over $130 million invested in B.C. roads since 1990.

Our engineers review studies, crash data and other information to decide which projects to invest in based on their ability to make roads safer.

We also look at ways to prevent crashes from happening in the first place by making sure safety issues are part of planning for new roadways and managing traffic.

We also consult with road safety experts on new ways to prevent crashes. Some of the new technology we’ve tested and is now in place in B.C. includes anti-skid road surface treatments, high-intensity

B.C.’s parks and protected areas system continues to grow Environment Minister Mary Polak introduced legislation that, if passed, will add more than 1,500 hectares to B.C.’s protected areas system, one of the largest in North America.

Bill 8 – the Protected Areas of British Columbia Amendment Act, 2015, adds land to six parks, increases public safety along Highway 3, and makes administrative changes to clarify legal descriptions.

“B.C.’s treasured and worldrenowned parks system continues to grow,” said Polak.

“By way of this legislation, successful community and First Nation partnerships are being realized, helping to expand our parks, create more recreational opportunities, increase public safety and further protect B.C.’s beautiful and natural spaces for future generations.”

Other private land acquisitions adding to the parks system through this legislation include 1,219 hectares to West Arm Park in the Kootenays and 109 hectares of land to Bodega Ridge Park on Galiano Island. 38 hectares of marine foreshore are also being added to Bodega Ridge Park.

The boundaries of E.C. Manning Park are changing slightly, with the removal of two hectares of park land near Highway 3 to allow for the replacement of the Cambie Creek bridges, addressing health and safety concerns.

If passed, this legislation solidifies an agreement between the Osoyoos Indian Band (OIB) and the Province to officially rename two provincial parks of significant cultural value within OIB traditional territory. Haynes Point and Okanagan Falls provincial parks will officially be known by their traditional First Nations’ names.

These amendments assist government in meeting a number of commitments made to partners and vendors respecting land acquisitions, as well as strategic agreements with First Nations.

First-ever Canada Winter Games in B.C. concludes

T

he 2015 Canada Winter Games drew to a close yesterday after two successful weeks of competition. It was a landmark event for the province – the largest multisport and cultural event ever held in northern B.C. and the first ever Canada Winter Games to take place in British Columbia.

The City of Prince George and the Lheidli T’enneh First Nation played host to more than 15,000 visitors and participants from Feb. 13 to March 1, 2015, as 2,400 athletes from across the nation gathered to compete in 19 sports.

Team BC had an impressive performance at the Games, finishing in third place overall with a final tally of 88 medals – 21 gold, 34 silver and 33 bronze. Quebec and Ontario were first and second in the medal standings.

Unique program will attract investment, boost job creation The Province will stimulate economic growth and job creation through another installment of the Infrastructure Royalty Credit Program (IRCP).

The program encourages new privatesector investment with up to $120 million in royalty credits available to build new or upgraded all-season roads and pipelines. These royalty deductions help promote year-round activity and create jobs by providing an incentive to invest in natural gas infrastructure.

Investments made as a result of the program also support the Province’s emerging liquefied natural gas (LNG) industry by improving access to new or underdeveloped resource areas. Access to these areas makes it easier for industry to expand the province’s natural gas resources, increasing the competitiveness of B.C.’s LNG industry.

Applications will be ranked according to their potential benefits, with approval going to the projects demonstrating the highest economic advantage to British Columbia.

Why Filmmakers Are Allegedly Miffed With Arjun Kapoor If sources are to be believed, Arjun Kapoor is not really in a good mood nowadays! Enhanced builder licensing helps protect homebuyers An enhanced licensing system for residential builders in B.C. will lead to higher professional standards in the residential construction sector and help protect new homebuyers.

Under the Homeowner Protection Act regulations, the B.C. government is establishing new qualifications and continuing education requirements for home builders constructing single-family homes and small residential buildings.

To obtain a new licence, applicants must demonstrate proficiency in seven areas related to residential construction including the British Columbia Building Code, construction management and customer relations. The qualifications can be met through a combination of education and experience or equivalencies.

To renew their licence, all home builders will be required to take continuing professional development courses directly related to residential construction each year.

There will be no additional licensing fees for residential builders. The enhanced licensing system will be phased in over the next 16 months to give the industry time to prepare for the new requirements.

Quick Facts: There are more than 6,000 licensed residential builders in B.C., the majority of whom build single-family homes and small residential buildings.

In 2014, more than 30,000 new homes were built in B.C. including 11,695 single detached homes and 19,069 homes in multi-unit buildings.

Since 2005, the Province has worked with the construction sector to develop this enhanced system of qualifications for residential builders constructing single-family homes and small residential buildings.

Home builders with existing licences will not need to re-qualify under the enhanced licensing system. They will be required to meet the continuing professional development requirements.

Builders will be able to choose from a wide range of options for courses and continuing professional development.

Courses may be offered in multiple languages.

UFV opens its doors for Girls Fly Too! UFV’s Aerospace program is a gold sponsor of this weekend’s The Sky’s No Limit – Girls Fly Too! event, expected to draw up to 10,000 people from across the Lower Mainland.

Free flights and family fun are on tap at the Abbotsford International Airport for this annual event, part of an outreach initiative founded

by B.C. pilot Kirsten Brazier in 2012. Plane rides are offered free of charge to females who have not flown in a small aircraft before, plus participants can try their hand at many aviation and aerospace activities, and civilian and non-civilian VIPS will be on hand with aircraft to explore.

In addition to helping a support a great initiative, the event is an excellent opportunity to

highlight UFV’s Aerospace Centre’s Aircraft Structures Technician program, says Applied and Technical Studies Director Rolf Arnold.

The Aerospace Center will be open for two info sessions on March 11, at 5:50 pm and 7 pm. An airplane ride will be awarded as a prize for attendees.

Out of 24,505 professional pilots in Canada, only 1,356 of them are women. Out of 19,601 aircraft engineers, only 560 of them are women.

Less than three per cent of the technical positions in the Royal Canadian Air Force, such as pilot or maintenance technician, are held by women.

“We’re always excited to help shine some light on the aerospace industry, but this event is very special,” says Arnold.

“It would be easy to conclude that women are unwelcome in these fields. Instead, studies have shown that a common perception persists that aviation and aerospace careers are reserved for men,” Brazier says. “Since society observes mostly men employed in these fields, this perception is reinforced.”

“Combined with the fact there’s almost no heavy lifting, aircraft repair is also unique in the trades world in that it appeals to as many women as men. Almost everything’s aluminum and light,” he says, adding other materials include Kevlar, carbon fiber, wood and fabric.

The Sky’s No Limit – Girls Fly Too! outreach events aim to change this perception by

welcoming women to the airport and giving them a hands-on introduction to aviation and aerospace.

“The first flight experience is so incredibly amazing that we just have to share it,” she adds.

“It’s often the catalyst that is needed to inspire interest in aviation and aerospace, whether as a pilot, air traffic controller, aircraft mechanic, or aeronautical engineer. Opportunities are endless.”

The event is about education as much as it is about inspiring girls and women; everyone — male and female alike — is encouraged to participate or volunteer.
