Wildfire destruction in Lytton, BC and surrounding communities Brad Vis, Member of Parliament for Mission—Matsqui—Fraser Canyon, released the following statement on the ongoing wildfires devastating the town of Lytton and neighbouring communities: “I stand with the people of Lytton during this time of unimaginable grief.

We are stunned by the widespread devastation to homes and businesses, and we mourn the loss of at least two community members. Thank you to the first responders who continue to work around the clock to save lives and homes during an already devastating wildfire season. We will rebuild

– that is not in question – but right now we need to focus on reunifying families and supporting those that have lost everything.

From Balwant Sanghera’s Desk: In honour of Asa Singh Johal A prominent member of our community, a pioneer, a lumber baron, a philanthropist and a very proud Canadian has left us for his heavenly abode.

Recipient of Order of British Columbia and Order of Canada, Asa Singh Johal, passed away on July 5, 2021.

Our pioneers set foot on Canadian soil more than 130 years ago. Since then they have worked very hard in the growth and development of the South Asian community and their adopted country, Canada. As a result of their struggles and sacrifices, our community has achieved a prominent place in Canada. Due to their efforts, to-day, our community has become as one of the most visible, resilient, generous and powerful ones in this country.

We owe all of this to those brave, hardworking, visionary trailblazers of our community. India Cultural Centre of Canada Gurdwara Nanak Niwas’ Chairman Asa Singh Johal was one of those respected pioneers.

Asa Singh Johal came to Canada with his parents at a very young age in 1926. He started working at age 14.

Eventually, Asa Singh Johal became as one of the most prominent lumber barons in this province. His company Terminal Forest Products Ltd.and other companies have provided employment to thousands of workers over the years.

Not only that, Mr. Johal and his family have donated millions of dollars to a lot of worthwhile causes. These include Children’s Hospital, Vancouver General Hospital, U.B.C., Richmond Hospital, BC Cancer Society and many others. The Johal family was kind enough to build an impressive auditorium at Government Girls Secondary School in his native village Jandiala in Jalandhar District. Province enables increased investments in renewable gas, hydrogen The Province has amended the Greenhouse Gas Reduction (Clean Energy) Regulation to increase the production and use of renewable gas as well as green and waste hydrogen in British Columbia, generating jobs and economic opportunities while reducing greenhouse gas (GHG) emissions.

“A key part of our CleanBC strategy is increasing the use of hydrogen and other renewable gases in place of fossil fuels in vehicles, buildings and industry,” said Bruce Ralston, Minister of Energy, Mines and Low Carbon Innovation. “The changes we’ve made to the Greenhouse Gas Reduction Regulation will provide natural gas utilities with more flexibility, stimulate investments in renewable energy and accelerate growth of hydrogen and renewable gas supply in their systems, while keeping rates affordable for their customers.”

B.C. is the first province in Canada to make these kinds of changes allowing for the increased production of renewable gas, including hydrogen. The amendments support the Province’s upcoming hydrogen strategy, which will include ambitious goals to increase the production and use of renewable and low-carbon hydrogen to help achieve climate targets under CleanBC and create jobs and opportunities in the clean energy and technology sectors.

“This change is an important step to help reduce greenhouse gas emissions from our natural gas system by enabling the expansion of Renewable Natural Gas and clean hydrogen,” said George Heyman, Minister of Environment and Climate Change Strategy.

“We’re committed to finding new solutions that significantly cut climateharming pollution in all sectors and power a clean economy for people and businesses.”

Critical Problems with the CRT Scheme

CRT members who are appointed by the BC government.

Reliance on the mostly online CRT to resolve personal injury disputes was a very significant change in how personal injury claims should be decided. No other province in Canada uses such a scheme. ICBC claim lawyers immediately voiced concerns. A major problem is that the CRT was given a judicial function, a role that is constitutional preserved for BC’s superior courts. You should have access to an independent court and have your case decided by an independently appointed judge if ICBC wrongly puts you at fault for the car accident or incorrectly classifies your injuries as minor. Instead, the CRT scheme forces you to have your ICBC dispute adjudicated by

On March 2, 2021, the Chief Justice of the BC Supreme Court ruled that the law giving the CRT jurisdiction over certain motor vehicle injury claims were unconstitutional and no longer in effect. Chief Justice Hinkson ruled that the CRT is no longer allowed to decide if an injury is a “minor injury” and concluded that accident claims worth less than $50,000 should not be referred to the CRT rather than the courts. The stay is effective until the Court of Appeal releases its final decision on the constitutional challenge. In the meantime, accident victims are left in limbo. The CRT is no longer “paused” and claimants must choose whether to file or continue their claim at the CRT or file their claim in court instead.

My idea is to not let image take over work I want to do : Tamannaah Bhatia Actress Tamannaah Bhatia has been acting for 16 years now. She has won a large fan base as one of the top glam queens of the South, and has also impressed as an actress of substance with select roles. She feels her idea is to not let any particular image dictate the kind of work she wants to do.

Tamannah made her acting debut in 2005 at the age of 15 with the Hindi film "Chand Sa Roshan Chehra". The same year, she made her Telugu debut with "Sri" and the following year she made her Tamil debut with "Kedi". "I have evolved as a person and at every different point of time. I have continuously worked, so for me, most of my life is divided

into the films I have worked on. I enjoy it. For me, it is as new as it was on the first day," Tamannaah said. She feels the process of breaking an image has become challenging now. "In fact, it is a lot more challenging now because I feel like there is a constant need of unlearning and you are making something that has already been created in terms of an image, and moving forward my idea is to not let an image take over the kind of work I want to do. I want the work to kind of precede that," she said.

Tamannah, who was recently seen in the web-series "November Story" on Disney+ Hotstar VIP, is now gearing up for the Telugu remake of the Hindi thriller "Andhadhun".

The Telugu version is directed by Merlapaka Gandhi.

Actor Sanjay Kapoor's daughter Shanaya Kapoor is ready to enter Bollywood soon. The 21-year-old is naturally excited."I'm extremely excited and looking forward to shooting the film. I have been doing several readings with my director, and been having lots of discussions on my character brief and breakdown of the scenes," says the new kid on the B-Town block, in an interview. Shanaya's first film is directed by Shashank Khaitan and, like the debut projects of many industry kids lately, will be produced

by Karan Johar's Dharma Productions. She is cast opposite actors Gurfateh Pirzada and Laksh Lalwani in the film, a rom-com love triangle. The debutant actress has been preparing for the film before it goes on the floor after lockdown gets over. "I think understanding the skin and honesty of a character is important," she says. Before her debut film, Shanaya worked as an assistant director on the Jhanvi Kapoor-starrer "Gunjan Saxena" to understand filmmaking and how film sets function. Her father Sanjay Kapoor has lately been a regular on the digital space, he was seen in "Lust Stories", "The Gone Game" and "The Last Hour", and has "Finding Anamika" coming up. need. Over the next few weeks, the drive will be conducted in different parts of Maharashtra, thus reaching out to a wider section of people. While she had initially started Tisca’s Table with chef Vikas Khanna to facilitate conversations between bright minds, Chopra has of late used the platform to extend support to the marginalised communities. “If each one of us does our bit, we may not have too much suffering in terms of food and essentials. [Media entrepreneur] Gautam Thakker has helped us set up this initiative with the theatre workers’ association, and exhibitor Akshaye Rathi has ensured that food reaches all over Maharashtra, including the Vidarbha region. Government takes next steps to improve fairness for off-dock drayage sector

ndustry stakeholders are invited to provide feedback on the implementation of the off-dock drayage recommendations recently released by the independent B.C. container trucking commissioner.

“Our government is committed to supporting and accelerating sustainable growth for the drayage industry in a way that is fair for everyone in the industry,” said Rob Fleming, Minister of Transportation and Infrastructure.

“I encourage stakeholders to engage in open communication with the B.C. container trucking commissioner, so we can move forward and help us all

reach our shared goals.”

The Off-Dock Drayage Recommendation Report was published on May 12, 2021, in response to a request from the minister to examine opportunities to make targeted adjustments to the rates and policies related to offdock drayage activity in the Lower Mainland.

“BCTA welcomes the opportunity to continue to work with container trucking stakeholders and provide feedback in this process,” said Dave Earle, president and CEO, BC Trucking Association (BCTA). “Consultation is a cornerstone of effective public policy, and we are encouraged that the provincial government and the B.C. container trucking commissioner are continuing to engage B.C.’s drayage sector in conversations that will inform evidence-based decisions.”

Last year, the Province and the commissioner commissioned a study to better understand off-dock truck trips that support containerized shipping throughout the Lower Mainland.

The study was published in September. The commissioner has since conducted ongoing consultation to find industry solutions that support a stable, efficient and competitive container-trucking sector.

“Our concerns have been heard by Minister Fleming. We now look forward to discussing how we can best implement the recommendations,” said Gavin McGarrigle, western regional director, Unifor. “We will continue to insist on more effective enforcement to stamp out undercutting and will be working to help ensure no trucker is worse off under the transition to any new system.”

Since 2017, the Province has made several improvements to wages and working conditions for drivers, including: increasing hourly wages; increasing wages for independent operators; and increasing the minimum daily callout rate.

The consultation being undertaken by the commissioner will inform the next round of improvements for those working in the container trucking sector.

The commissioner is calling for written submissions from all interested parties, including drivers, until the end of day, Aug. 31, 2021.

July 1, and the beginning of September is a crucial time, as post-secondary institutions ramp up operations and welcome back faculty, staff and students. The guidelines highlight the importance of public health measures, such as daily health checks and hand hygiene, as well as classroom logistics and on-campus student housing and dining services. For example, on-campus student housing providers can plan for close-to-full occupancy for the fall. Access to mental health supports for students, faculty and staff, Indigenous gathering places and accommodations for on campusservices are also outlined to support the transition.

The Purple Lights Nights committee is seeking submissions for the 2021 Purple Lights Nights event logo. The winning design will be screened onto t-shirts that are sold as part of the 2021 Purple Lights Nights campaign.

The contest is open to high school students, University students, and community members from Abbotsford / Mission.

Supporting a safe 2021 fruit harvest in B.C.

resh fruit from the Okanagan and Creston Valley will continue to be on the tables of British Columbians this year, as support for work camp accommodations for seasonal fruit pickers has been extended through the 2021 harvest season.

The B.C. government is investing $652,000 so work camps meet COVID-19 health and safety requirements in Loose Bay (Oliver) and Summerland. These work camps have modified their operations, infrastructure and layout to protect worker, employer and public health, and hired an on-site co-ordinator to conduct and implement COVID-19 safety training and protocols, as well as supporting daily health checks.

“The flavours of B.C. fruit are an enjoyable part of our summers, and we want to make sure the growers and workers harvesting the crops are staying safe,” said Lana Popham, Minister of Agriculture. “We need to continue to look after each other as we restart our province, and extending a program that was very effective in preventing COVID-19 outbreaks on our farms and in our communities last year is part of that care.”

by AgSafe to stay in a designated work camp. The course, available in English and French, includes information on physical distancing, hygiene and cleaning, work pods, transportation, tools and equipment, safe self-isolation and vaccinations.

The course also outlines the rights and responsibilities of employers and workers.
