MP Vis Helps Secure Over $600,000 in Funding Towards Environmental Action The Fraser Valley Conservancy was awarded $646,874 in federal funding through the Government of Canada’s Climate Action and Awareness Fund towards their work in community engagement on action against climate change.

“After advocating to Environment and Climate Change Minister Wilkinson, I am thrilled that we were able to secure funding for the Fraser Valley Conservancy’s important project,” said MP Vis. Based in Mission, B.C., the Fraser Valley Conservancy’s Close to Home: Connecting Under-Engaged Fraser Valley Communities to Nature-Based Climate Change Actions seeks to provide environmental programming to communities in the Fraser Valley.

B.C. works for more diversity in tech sector

The B.C. government is investing $15 million in the Innovator Skills Initiative (ISI) to prioritize under-represented people in the technology sector.

The ISI, through the StrongerBC Future Leaders program, offers $5,000 for up to 3,000 paid placements at businesses in B.C. that are hiring for tech or tech-related roles. The funding supplements the salary of a new employee.

Brenda Bailey, Parliamentary Secretary for Technology and Innovation, is leading stakeholder engagement with people and organizations from underrepresented communities to hear how the B.C. government can prioritize inclusion through the ISI program to help people get their first job in the tech sector.

“Too many well-deserving women, gender-diverse people, Indigenous, Black and people of colour, and other marginalized communities have struggled to enter the growing technology sector and this needs to change,” said Ravi Kahlon, Minister of Jobs, Economic Recovery and Innovation.

“This work being done by Parliamentary Secretary Bailey will help create a more diverse tech sector and provide people with a solid future, with good jobs and opportunities for advancement. By filling talent shortages, B.C. businesses have the opportunity to expand and grow.”

Bailey co-founded Canada’s first women-owned and operated video game studio in 2011. As part of her mandate, Bailey is committed to ensuring placements for under-represented people are available in the tech sector by increasing the number of ISI grants, and that B.C.-based tech companies can hire and grow.

The engagement sessions will include women and gender-diverse people, Indigenous, Black and people of colour (IBPOC), and people with disabilities, among others. Meetings will take place with various groups, such as Inclusion BC, Black Entrepreneurs and Businesses of Canada Society, Black Business Association of BC, Ethos Lab, MOSAIC, Traction on Demand, First Nations Technology Council, and Jelly Digital Marketing and other identified groups. Consultations started in May and will run until end of June 2021.

“We want to ensure under-represented people have access to the career opportunities that they deserve,” Bailey said. “The B.C. government is proud to provide grants that will help fund up to 3,000 paid positions for people who have historically been under-represented in the tech sector. Filling these jobs will make a positive difference to the B.C. economy, particularly for communities that have been disproportionately affected by the pandemic.”

The ISI is administered by Innovate BC, a Crown agency that connects innovators in every industry and region with funding, resources and the support they need to build and grow companies.

“B.C. companies need tech talent to succeed in today’s economy,” said Andrew Petter, chair of Innovate BC. “By assisting under-represented people to secure tech jobs, the ISI program creates a double benefit – it opens doors of opportunity for workers while helping B.C. businesses to grow and thrive.”

Feedback collected through the engagement process will be used to shape the ISI program to ensure it prioritizes inclusion and will be more accessible to under-represented people.

Consideration is also being given to how to make the program simpler for businesses to use through modifications like streamlining administrative requirements and accessing talent and funding more quickly.

Applications are expected to open in summer 2021 for placements to the program in fall 2021.

“I believe the power of this program is that of opportunity. Creating tech job opportunities for women and nonbinary people, Indigenous and Black people, people of colour and others is a brilliant way to support those hardest hit during the pandemic,” said Jackee Kasandy, co-founder of Black Entrepreneurs and Businesses of Canada Society. “Getting a meaningful job that matches a person’s training or education can make all the difference to their well-being.”

Customer service, digital skills training offered virtually Up to 36 eligible British Columbians will get skills training, in three separate intakes, to prepare them for jobs in customer service and office administration in the Lower Mainland.

This is a new Community and Employer Partnerships (CEP) project from the Government of British Columbia. Participant recruitment is focused on youth, Indigenous individuals, immigrants and individuals with multiple barriers to employment.

“We’re committed to providing all British Columbians with skills training and employment opportunities so they’re able to find good-paying jobs to support themselves and their families,” said Nicholas Simons, Minister of Social Development and Poverty Reduction. “As the labour market recovers, there will be a greater need for skilled administrative and customer service workers around the province.”

The Province is providing more than $385,000 to Douglas College to deliver skills and certification courses virtually as part of its customer service/digital skills training program.

Participants will receive 11 weeks of essential and occupational skills training, four weeks of on-the-job work experience and two weeks’ followup support to assist in their job search. They will also receive certification courses in basic computer skills, Microsoft Office 365: Word, Excel, PowerPoint, Outlook, Adobe Acrobat/Reader and SuperHost, as well as diversity and inclusion in the workplace.

Graduates of the program will be qualified to work as administrative officers, data entry clerks, office support workers, call centre workers and sales representatives.

Virtual town hall focuses on safe return to campus “Vaccination” was the word of the day as Dr. Bonnie Henry, B.C.’s provincial health officer, and her team answered questions posed by student leaders at a virtual town hall hosted by Thompson Rivers University.

In partnership with the Ministry of Advanced Education and Skills Training, the recent town hall connected B.C.’s top public health official with the Alliance of BC Students and the British Columbia Federation of Students, Indigenous student associations and student unions from 25 public postsecondary institutions.

Following on the heels of BC’s Restart plan, Henry spoke about how vaccine effectiveness has reinforced confidence in a full return to campus for postsecondary institutions in the fall.

“We are in a different place now than we were a year ago and even a few months ago,” Henry said.

The town hall, the second of its kind, was held to give post-secondary student leaders an opportunity to discuss public health guidance in the COVID-19 Return-to-Campus Primer released in April and to prepare for in-person learning in September 2021.

UFV grants honorary degrees to Romeo Dallaire, Andree Cazabon, James Chamberlain, and Cathy Press

T

he University of the Fraser Valley has presented honorary doctorates to four Canadians who have made a significant contribution to their field and Canadian society.

Retired general and humanitarian Romeo Dallaire, filmmaker Andree Cazabon, teacher and LGBTQ activist James Chamberlain, and helicopter pilot and aviation entrepreneur Cathy Press were honored by UFV in a private ceremony on June 4.

Given the ongoing restrictions on large gatherings due to COVID-19, UFV will host a virtual Convocation celebration that premieres on Friday, June 18 at 7 pm. This event will highlight messages from each of the UFV’s honorary degree recipients.

James Chamberlain James Chamberlain was an elementary school teacher for 27 years and a Faculty Associate for the Simon Fraser University Education program. He coordinated the Social Justice Program for the BC Teachers Federation for four years, focusing on LGBTQ, anti-racism, and anti-poverty issues, and was a vice-principal and principal with the Vancouver School Board (2012-2019). He helped to spearhead the work of Gay and Lesbian Educators (GALE-B.C.) and later the Pride Education Network from 1992 to 2012. He focussed on SOGI curriculum development and professional development for teachers as well as political lobbying of education partners to embrace SOGI education over the decades. He successfully sued (along with others) the Surrey School Board over the banning of books about same-sex families in schools. The case

lasted from 1997 to 2003 and went to the Supreme Court of Canada. He helped develop 23 LGBTQ/SOGI school board policies between 2004 and 2012, and has worked on LGBTQ issues in education at the local and national levels. He currently volunteers with the Rainbow Refugee Society, which has brought a gay refugee to Canada from Africa and fundraised for another refugee from Africa who fled Uganda and is in Vancouver now. He also started a cohousing community in Vancouver.

As the first female helicopter instructor in Canada, she rose through the ranks of the aviation world from office assistant to owner and CEO, and holds numerous professional qualifications nationally and internationally. She has been widely recognized for her work, winning numerous awards including the Flight Instructor Safety Award from the David Charles Abrahamson Memorial, the Back and Bevington Air Safety Award from the BC Aviation Council, the Established Business of the Year Award from the Abbotsford Chamber of Commerce, the Innovation and Global Growth Award from the Bank of Montreal and the Enterprising Women of the Year Award from Enterprise Magazine in 2017.

She has demonstrated courage and creativity as she writes and directs films about important issues in Canada.

Cazabon’s films have amassed over one million views on CBC-Newsworld, TVA, Canal D, Radio-Canada, and CBC Television. Her works have also been prominently featured at an array of prestigious film festivals. Her documentaries, Wards of the Crown and Family on the Edge, have each received the Best Social-Political Documentary prize at the Golden Sheaf Awards.

Her film 3rd World Canada, set in the aftermath of the suicide of three parents, explores the impact of Third World world conditions on children in a remote Indigenous community.

Cazabon’s latest project, 4 Seasons of Reconciliation, is a national film series comprised of four short documentary films set in Canada and produced on the heels of the final report from the Truth and Reconciliation Commission of Canada. Through her work Cazabon brings attention to significant social justice concerns within Canada.

Faculty Service Excellence 2021: Satwinder Bains’ impact is mighty at UFV and beyond

A

visionary leader with an unshakable commitment to equality and cultural justice, Dr. Satwinder Bains is the 2021 recipient of UFV’s Faculty Service Excellence Award.“As a woman of colour, not only is she smashing glass ceilings of patriarchy within academia, but also in conservative cultural spaces,” says Anita Lal, co-founder and director of the Poetic Justice Foundation, and one of Bains’ many nomination references.

“With each win she brings down barriers for future generations of women.”

And as her robutst CV attests, Bains is no stranger to putting in the hard work it takes to make a difference.

An early association with Abbotsford Community Services led to connections at UFV, inspiring Bains to join the university more than a decade ago. Today, she is as an associate professor in the department of Social Cultural and Media Studies. In addition to teaching, she made an immediate impact by spearheading a $2.25M donation drive crucial to establishing the BC Regional Innovation Chair in Canada-India Partnership Development — and with it UFV’s South Asian Studies Institute, which she has guided as director since 2006. That same year saw the establishment of UFV India, powered by the efforts of DJ Sandhu, with Bains working closely alongside. She served as director of UFV India from 2013-2017 before ascending to principal through 2019, making frequent trips to the campus in Chandigarh, located down a winding drive from her picturesque hometown of Shimla.

“I never dreamt we’d have a campus in India, that we’d have international students constantly coming, and that’s been such a beautiful extension of our ideas,” says Bains, a 2015 recipient of the Order of Abbotsford.

Even with her days and nights packed with meetings, mentorship, research, and teaching, Bains never loses focus

on effectively collaborating across boundaries, contributing to engaging learners, transforming lives, and building community.

“At the South Asian Studies Institute, we’re trying to be very relevant to society. We aren’t just barriers and a moat; we’re a porous space that has to allow ideas to filter in and out and we spend time studying those ideas.

My own personal motivation is to be relevant, to be in the here and now, to be current, but while understanding my past.”

Dad sits with me during script narrations : Mrunal Thakur

Actress Mrunal Thakur says that her parents are an active part of her career and she wouldn't like it any other way.

She adds that her dad sits with her during her narrations and gives his inputs, too. "They were hesitant in the beginning. But now, during a narration, my father sits next to me and gives his input.

When I was a kid, he used to take care of my textbooks and school notebooks, and now he takes care of the script," she said. The actress adds that her parents get very excited when they see her on screen. "Every time on TV, if they are surfing or on YouTube, my commercial comes, they will go screaming, 'you on the TV!' They are very proud of me. Even today, when an ad or a song comes, they get so excited and happy. The joy I can feel and see is something that keeps me going and helps me contribute towards good cinema," she says.

Talking about how she got them on board with her when it came to being an actress, Mrunal explains: "My family was afraid of the industry, but I always made sure that I had conversations with my parents so they know where I am filming and that their daughter is safe. In today's generation, a lot of my friends don't get along with their parents and they don't have that communication. When there is a gap between you are your parents, it causes baggage. I was transparent and they always supported me."

`Gangs of Wasseypur` trio reunites for an ad Pankaj Tripathi is usually wary of brand endorsements, finding little joy in facing the camera for a 30-second ad. But he was uncharacteristically excited when an endorsement for a mustard oil brand came his way. Reason — it was to reunite him with his 'Gangs of Wasseypur' (2012) co-stars Nawazuddin Siddiqui and Manoj Bajpayee.

The actor shot for the ad with Siddiqui at a Mumbai studio in March. A source from the production reveals, “Nawazuddin and Pankaj were excited to face the camera together after a long time. The two could not stop reminiscing about working on 'Gangs of Wasseypur'. The shoot, conducted with a slim team of 30 and in compliance with the safety norms, was wrapped up in a day.”

Unfortunately, Bajpayee — who fronted the first edition of Anurag Kashyap’s crime drama as Sardar Khan — could not join the duo on the set as he was down with Covid-19 at the time. The source adds, “After recovering, Manoj shot his portion separately against a green screen at home. The ad will be released soon.”

Major Singh Dhillon passed away peacefully on June 2, 2021. He was son of late Sardar Jagraj Singh and Karnail Kaur Dhillon. He is survived by his wife Parkash Kaur Dhillon. They were married for almost 60 years and together they raised four children, Narinder (Jaspal), Pritpal (Jalaur), Amardeep (Randeep) and Gagan (Alvinder), and 9 grandchildren.

Major Singh was from Jorki Andhewali (Fazilka) Punjab, India. From a very young age, he had a strong passion for the academics. He graduated from Government College in Ludhiana with his Bachelor of Education and went on to complete his Masters in English. He used his education and skills to enrich the lives of other students as a Headmaster at High School for 27 years until 1991 when he immigrated to Canada. His thirst for knowledge continued and he learnt everything he could about Canada and it’s culture. He didn’t drive but could give someone directions to anywhere. He was always curious and loved to travel and explore new places.

He was a prominent member of the Sikh community and devoted many years to seva at the Gurdwara and often volunteered his interpreter services to those who needed. He loved watching Curling, Golf and Tennis and would even get up in the middle of the night to watch a Tennis match when it was in a different time zone.

Major Singh was a devoted patriarch of his family, a role he took pride in. He loved his family unconditionally and was invested in his grandchildren’s upbringing from walking them to school as young kids to instilling in them the importance of education. His face lit up when his other grandkids visited him. Family dinners will never be the same, his family will always cherish the memories they have of him.

Private funeral will be held on June 12 followed by prayers at Kalgidhar Gurudwara, Abbotsford at 2 pm. Family encourages you to donate to Heart and Stroke Foundation in his memory.
