Canadian Current Account Deficit Widens Further in Q3 Canada’s Q3 current account deficit widened by $0.5 billion to a slightly smaller-than-expected $18.9 billion from an unrevised $18.4 billion deficit in Q2. Market expectations were for a deficit of $19.2 billion in Q3.

Board of Education elects new Chair, Vice-Chair for 2012-13 The Abbotsford Board of Education has new but familiar faces at its helm. Elected Chair for the coming year is Trust-

ee Cindy Schafer, who was Board Chair from 2008 to 2011. Elected Vice-Chair is Trustee John Sutherland, who served the past year as Board Chair. The terms are each for one year.

Chair Schafer recounted some of the highlights for the Board and District of the past year and thanked Trustees and senior management for their work and achievements. She acknowledged the teacher’s strike in 2011 - 2012 caused some concern and disruption in schools. She also pointed to the regular meetings Trustees have with the district youth council – known as ‘YC34’ – as a real highlight, and a very useful time for Board members. A major focus for the Board has been, and will continue to be, the ongoing implementation of the Board’s Strategic Plan.

“As far as facilities work, our IT Road map was one of the key undertakings over the past year” Schafer said. She also noted the newest facility in the district – the new Abbotsford Senior Secondary, together with Sweeney Neighbourhood Centre and Abbotsford Community Library, as real assets.

The election was held at the special public meeting of the Board tonight (December 4.)

Committee assignments and school liaisons will be announced next week at the Board’s next regular meeting, December 11th.

“Grandparent” and Employment Frauds Revisited In recent weeks the Abbotsford Police Department has received an increased number of fraud and attempted fraud reports. The frauds are essentially variations on familiar themes but the specifics are particularly troubling to citizens in Canada, the United States and to the APD. Many individuals will be aware of the “Grandparent” scam. This is where a fraudster researches and locates a target that is generally older and has family members who can be easily identified through Social Media and open source data searches. The fraudster poses as a person in authority who is dealing with the relative and the target is asked to provide funds through money transfer in order to help their loved one. The unique twist this November is that the people receiving calls appear to live in the southern United States and the caller purports to be affiliated with the Abbotsford Police Department. The fraudster

claims that a money transfer is required to establish bail money to release the relative from custody.

Another resurgent scam involves the promise of a job. An Abbotsford resident will respond to an employment advertisement. They will then receive an email advising them that they were the successful applicant for the job and their first paycheck will arrive in the mail with further instructions. The cheque will arrive and be in excess of the agreed weekly wage.

The new employee is instructed to cash the cheque and to transfer the remaining funds back to an orphanage/medical facility/etc. in Africa.

Both of these frauds obviously strike close to home despite the fact the calls originate from locations outside of North America. We believe the most effective approach to these frauds is prevention through increased awareness. Please discuss these frauds with friends and family members.

Canada takes action to improve fuel efficiency and reduce greenhouse gas emissions from heavy-duty vehicles

he Government of Canada has initiated proposed regulations that will improve fuel efficiency and help reduce greenhouse gas (GHG) emissions from 2018 model year heavyduty vehicles by up to 23% from those sold in 2010.

UFV strengthening connections in India: PM visits with UFV Chandigarh students

The University of the Fraser Valley strengthened its ties to India recently through an 11-day visit by UFV president Mark Evered and colleagues. And a visit by Prime Minister Stephen Harper and his trade mission to Chandigarh gave students from UFV’s business administration program there the chance to make a good first impression on the PM and business leaders. The students were part of a dance troupe that entertained Harper during his visit to Chandigarh, and also hosted members of the PM’s delegation at UFV’s Chandigarh location.

Evered was joined on his trip, which ran from Nov 4 to 15, by UFV chief financial officer Jackie Hogan and Satwinder Bains, the university advisor on Canada–India relations.

With a significant amount of the population of the Fraser Valley region having ties to India, UFV’s admin-

istration recognizes the importance of building ties to the Indian community, both within Canada and in India.

Since 2005, UFV has been offering its Bachelor of Business Administration degree to a cohort of students in Chandigarh, in India’s Punjab state, in partnership with Sanatan Dharma College Chandigarh (SDCC), an affiliate of Panjab University.

UFV also has partnerships with several other Indian post-secondary institutions.

These partnerships facilitate student and faculty exchanges, student internships, and visiting scholar initiatives.

Trade & Minister for the Asia-Pacific Gateway Ed Fast and other business delegates to discuss and build on employment opportunities and connections. Paul Davidson, president of the Association of Universities and Colleges of Canada, was also part of the delegation that visited UFV’s Chandigarh location. Evered reports that Davidson says that UFV is doing “incredible things” in India and that the students made a great impression on the federal delegation.

New Port Mann Bridge opens to eight lanes of traffic

remier Christy Clark today officially opened the new Port Mann Bridge to eight lanes of traffic, which cuts commute times and allows for the first regular transit service across the bridge in 25 years.

“As we officially open the Port Mann Bridge we are eliminating one of the worst traffic bottlenecks in British Columbia,” said Premier Clark. “After years of waiting, drivers get to enjoy a faster, more efficient commute and will have more time to spend with their family instead of sitting in an idling car.”

Some drivers can expect to cut their commutes in half, and save as much as an hour per day. Car-poolers and HOV users will enjoy the benefits of new on and off ramps and dedicated HOV lanes from Langley to Vancouver. For the first time in 25 years, reliable bus service will be able to cross the Port Mann Bridge, with ExpressBus connecting the new Carvolth Exchange in Langley to Braid Station in New Westminster in about 20 minutes.

Three years ago, the government of B.C. set a target of opening the Port Mann Bridge in December 2012, and today, on December 1, 2012, the bridge was opened and drivers started enjoying the benefits of nearly four years of bridge and Highway 1 construction.

The on-time and on-budget opening of the new Port Mann Bridge is a major milestone for the Port Mann / Highway 1 Improvement Project, and the centrepiece of 37 kilometres of upgrades to one of British Columbia’s most important economic corridors.

“This is the day we’ve been waiting for, as the new Port Mann Bridge officially opens to eight lanes of traffic and motorists can start to save some valuable time on their commutes,” said Transportation and Infrastructure Minister Mary Polak.

A Few NDP MLA’s were Present at The Search Continues for BC’s Abbotsford South NDP Candidate Next Singing Sensation Lakhvinder Jhaj’s Fundraising Dinner Children’s Charity Launches 3rd Annual Talent Competition Aspiring vocalists across the province are once again invited to audition for Variety’s Got Talent presented by Coast Capital Savings. The winner of the 3rd annual competition will receive a Rising Star music package and appear on the Variety Show of Hearts Telethon February 16th & 17th, 2013.

Finalists will have the rare opportunity of performing before a panel of music industry and celebrity judges, including music manager Bruce Allen and Global BC’s Steve Darling.

The competition is open to all BC residents ages 13-29. Audition videos should be submitted to www. varietysgottalent.ca from January 2nd to 16th, 2013. Variety requests that videos run between 2-3 minutes, with singers performing a capella, to track, or with acoustic guitar or keyboard accompaniment.

10 finalists will compete in the Variety’s Got Talent Finals on February 9th, 2013 in Vancouver, BC. 9 of the finalists will be chosen by music industry professionals from Sam Feldman & Associates.

The 10th finalist will be chosen by the public in the People’s Choice Competition. Fans can log onto The Province newspaper’s website and vote for their favourite performer from January 27th to February 3rd, 2013 to select the 10th finalist.

All finalists will perform before a panel of judges and a live audience at the River Rock Show Theatre on February 9th, 2013. The winner will be announced at the end of the show and will appear on the Variety Show of Hearts Telethon that airs live on Global BC from February 16th to 17th, 2013.
