After visiting various holy places of worship and historical interests it was time to spend some time in the City of Lahore itself. While growing up in India I would often hear from our older generations that if you have not seen Lahore, you have not seen anything. My wife Baldev and I had spent a lot of time in Lahore on our previous visit to Pakistan in 2006. However, we were curious to visit some more this time. The Mughal rulers were very fond of this city. As a matter of fact, for them next to Delhi, Lahore was a very important centre of their empire. Mughal rulers called Lahore the City of Gardens. They always maintained a very close link with this city. Lahore is the second largest city of Pakistan after Karachi. It is 26th largest city in the world. In addition to being the capital of West Punjab, this city of 13 million residents is also known as the capital of Pakistan’s culture. Also, Lahore was the capital of Maharaja Ranjit Singh’s kingdom.

This historic city can be roughly divided into two parts-Old Lahore and New Lahore. The Old Lahore is rich in history. It has a lot of history such as the Shahi (Royal ) Fort, old railway station, Anarkali Bazar and various Sikh places

Visiting India and Pakistan-7

of worship such as Guru Ram Das ji’s birthplace in choona Mandi, Gurdwara Dehra Sahib and many others. The New Lahore has the spacious new University of the Punjab, a lovely canal flowing through some spacious houses, a lot of shopping centres, plazas, hotels and much more.

It is also the headquarters of the Punjab government. Incidentally, when we were still in Lahore, new federal and provincial governments were sworn in Islamabad and Lahore respectively. Punjab had the honour of having a female premier (Chief Minister) Mirium Sharif. Soon after being sworn in, she made two announcement of special interest to Punjabis around the globe. She appointed a Sikh -Ramesh Singh Arora, an influential minority leader to her cabinet. Mirium Sharif also announced that Punjabi language classes will be available in Pakistani Punjab’s schools. Both of these developments are very encouraging.

While strolling through the bazars and streets of Lahore we felt safe and comfortable. Everyone we met was very friendly and helpful. It gave us the same feeling as if we are strolling through the streets and markets of any Indian city like Jalandhar or Ludhiana. Western fast-food outlets like McDonalds and Subways were also scattered throughout the city. Like any other city one could not but notice the stark difference between City life and the rural areas. Some areas in rural Pakistani Punjab still need a lot of improvements in infrastructure and other facilities. This is the same in many other countries including India. Another thing we noticed was the difference in currencies. We were pleasantly surprised to learn that one Canadian dollar was equivalent to more than 200 Pakistani rupees. One Indian rupee was close to three Pakistani rupees. This difference made our dollars go a lot further in Pakistan.

In the independence struggle Lahore played a very important role for the freedom fighters. It was this city where freedom fighters like Shaheed Bhagat Singh and many other dedicated freedom fighters sacrificed their lives. Also, community leaders like Dial Singh Majithia laid the foundations of a bank and a prominent English newspaper like The Tribune, which has been a very popular newspaper in northern India. One thing that impressed us the

most was the generosity, hospitality, and kindness of Punjabis whether they are in West Punjab, East Punjab or NRI Punjabs scattered around the globe. With these pleasant memories we headed back to Wagah border and my hometown Pharwala in Jalandhar district. It was a very memorable visit for us.

MLA Stone introduces bill to combat foreign interference in

B.C.’s elections and universities

Amid escalating concerns about foreign interference, Todd Stone, the Opposition House Leader, has introduced a Private Member’s Bill aimed at bolstering British Columbia’s defences against threats to democracy.

“Foreign interference poses a significant threat to the integrity of elections, universities, democratic institutions, and processes. It’s critical that we take action to ensure the political landscape of British Columbia remains under the control of its residents,” Stone stated. “For years, existing gaps in our election laws have been overlooked by the NDP. This bill modernizes and strengthens our laws to better counteract foreign influences in our political and educational systems.”

The Control of Foreign Funding and Electoral Influence Act includes measures to prevent foreign interference,

such as banning foreign-funded individuals and organizations from disseminating false or misleading information related to elections. The bill also bans contributions from foreign nationals, governments, or political entities for election-related activities, and forbids any collaboration with or acceptance of funds from foreign sources intended to influence electoral outcomes.

“British Columbians are increasingly concerned about the risks of foreign interference and expect immediate action to address these risks in our electoral and educational systems,” added Stone. This bill represents BC United’s third effort to safeguard British Columbia’s democratic and educational institutions through private members’ bills, following two previous bills that the NDP government failed to bring to debate.

Minister Miller celebrates Citizenship Week and engages with communities across Canada

The Honourable Marc Miller, Minister of Immigration, Refugees and Citizenship, issued the following statement to mark the start of Citizenship Week, which runs from May 13 to 19, 2024:

“Citizenship Week gives us all an opportunity to reflect on what it means to be Canadian and give back to our communities. It’s a chance to be proud of our diversity, inclusivity and multiculturalism, and acknowledge the rights and responsibilities we all share as Canadian citizens. A vital part of being Canadian is understanding the history and reality of Indigenous Peoples and their integral role in this country’s past, present and future.

“This coming week, I have the honour of attending citizenship ceremonies in local communities where we will welcome new citizens to the Canadian family. From British Columbia to Nova Scotia, I look forward to meeting new Canadians from across the country, and visiting local organizations that provide assistance to newcomers by offering a range of services from official language training to finding employment. I encour-

age Canadians to attend one of the many citizenship ceremonies open to the public taking place this week and throughout the year across Canada. It is truly a great privilege to witness one of the most significant moments in a newcomer’s life: becoming a Canadian.

“We have a lot to celebrate this year. From April 1, 2023, to March 31, 2024, we welcomed 393,500 new Canadian citizens. We have made significant strides, and we are now processing most new citizenship applications much faster.

“I encourage you to join me in celebrating Citizenship Week by reflecting on what being Canadian means to you. Use the hashtags #CitizenshipWeek and #MyCitizenship to share stories about Canadian pride and citizenship in your communities. You can also get involved in your community to make a difference. That can mean voting in elections, volunteering, speaking up about issues that matter to you, or working with others to improve your communities. “Let’s look for other ways to celebrate our country and our shared Canadian identity—not just this week, but every week.”

Safety s good with systems such as bike, pedestrian Advanced Driver Assistance Systems (ADAS) upgraded Forward Collision-Avoidance Assist, Smart Cruise Control-Machine Learning, which adapts to the driver's driving style, and Highway Driving Assist 2, which assists in lane changes. There's also a Digital Camera Mirror and Surround-View Monitor with a 360-degree view.

The Kia Sorento impresses, retaining its composure even through quick corners. Handling is very good and there is a comfortable, smooth ride for occupants. Kia has done a noticeable job of improving wind and road noise from inside the cabin. A tight turning circle make the Sorento an easy to drive vehicle in urban areas. Fuel economy is rated at 10.3 L/100km combines. 11.5 city and 8.7km highway.

Downsides are few - the ride errs on comfort- not sport despite the sport mode y and the third row is a tight affair for adults and is more kid friendly than adult pleasing. To sum up, the Kia Sorento is well worth buying for its decent fuel economy. third row seating and family friendly ride. The rugged X-Line models feature extra ground clearance, Torque-Vectoring, All-Wheel Drive for extra traction when you need. It also has the tougher, rugged off-road look that sets itself apart if that’s what you are after, Highly recommended. 2022 Kia Sorento X-Line Limited – Price as tested - $53,375 including freight.

BC United makes third attempt to eradicate racial covenants in land titles

In a renewed effort to dismantle a legacy of racial injustice, BC United MLA for West Vancouver-Capilano, Karin Kirkpatrick, has reintroduced the Land Title Amendment Act, 2024. The bill aims to fully eradicate discriminatory clauses based on race, ancestry, or place of origin from property titles throughout British Columbia.

Despite being legally null and void, outdated racial covenants, such as “No person of the African or Asiatic race or of African or Asiatic descent, except as servants of the occupier of the premises and residents, shall reside or be allowed to remain on the premises,” continue to exist in some of B.C.’s legal documents.

“This language, relics of a segregated era, is both exclusionary and profoundly degrading,” said Kirkpatrick. “It perpetuates division, fosters inequality, and erodes the core values of our community. We must do more to mend the deep-seated wounds they have

caused, and uphold the principles of fairness and equality under the law.”

The Land Title Amendment Act, 2024 mandates registrars to not only strike these clauses from the records but to remove them entirely. This is the third time since 2022 Kirkpatrick has introduced the bill, following a petition led by West Vancouver resident Michele Tung, who was “appalled and disgusted” by the enduring presence of such demeaning and racially charged language in land titles.

Kirkpatrick urges support from all parties to rectify past injustice and combat xenophobia. “This act affirms our commitment to a society that stands firmly against hatred and ensure that no one continues to suffer from the remnants of past wrongs. It’s high time for all parties, including Premier David Eby, to move beyond slogans to meaningful action to eradicate racial prejudice,” concluded Kirkpatrick.

UTA Endorses Preliminary Port Trucking Plan to Curb Illegal OffDock Activity

Largest drayage labour organization fighting against companies engaged in lawbreaking. After 10 years of advocacy, the United Truckers Association (“UTA”) is endorsing a proposal to counteract Metro Vancouver drayage providers operating outside of the law. Many of the issues that caused the 2014 Port of Vancouver strike remain rampant due to the use of unlicensed companies, including rate undercutting, illegal kickback schemes and blatant disregard for rules, regulations and the BC Container Trucking Act.

A newly conceived plan to eliminate unregulated activity by the Office of the BC Container Trucking Commissioner (“OBCCTC”) is not only long overdue but will also be groundbreaking

for the entire drayage sector, according to UTA spokesperson Gagan Singh. “Our organization has spent the past decade pushing the OBCCTC and BC government to rein in these illegal operators, and we are very pleased that the current Commissioner is finally taking tangible action,” says Singh. “This new plan represents a substantial step forward towards achieving fairness for all players within this sector.”

In a press release from last week, licensees working outside of the law falsely claimed that the Commissioner’s new enforcement initiative was an attempt to penalize small and mediumsized companies. The UTA contends that this narrative is false and entirely unrepresentative of the current environment which has crushed the earnings of over one thousand legitimate independent operators and company drivers the organization represents. “The contracting of unlicensed companies has taken food off the tables of our members who work within the rule of law, and so any measures to eliminate this element from our industry is what is desperately needed,” adds Singh. “Simply put, if a company is not able to make a profit within the confines of the legislation and the regulations, then there is a serious flaw in the business model.” The UTA will continue to work closely with both the OBCCTC and the BC government to ensure that robust enforcement is in place by the time the new licensing regime begins on December

This will include measures to make better use of Commercial Vehicle Safety and Enforcement agents and a necessary amendment to the legislation so that appropriate penalties can be issued.

6 hacks to save you money

(NC) If your costs seem to be growing but your wallet isn’t, check out these tips and tricks from Royal Bank of Canada to hack your budget and help keep more money in your pocket.

Audit your bills: While it may sound tedious, it’s important to scrutinize your expenses. Take the time to review phone bills, subscriptions and receipts to spot areas where you could be saving.

Reward yourself: Leverage rewards cards and programs for your everyday purchases and expenses, and take advantage of retailers offering extra points when you shop.

Consolidate debts: When paying off your credit card isn’t an option, look for opportunities to consolidate your debt to a lower-interest option, like a line of credit.

Reduce impulse buys: Add a delayswitch to your online shopping. After adding items to your cart, let them stay there for 24 hours before completing the checkout. This will give you time to review the purchase and reduce impulse buys.

Make sure sales really are sales: Even if something is labelled as a sale, make sure you do your research and shop around for the best price.

Talk about it: There is value in talking about your finances with others. Even if you don’t have a banker on speed dial, you likely have financially savvy people in your network. Pick their brains.

Fraser Health launches screening project to better protect residents in longterm care

The prevalence of Carbapenemaseproducing organisms (CPO) is increasing in B.C. with new cases reported in both long-term care homes and hospitals. To better protect long-term care residents from a common superbug that can cause serious illness, we are proactively screening for CPO in owned and operated care communities.

“We know that long-term care residents often have weakened immune systems which put them at risk for multi-drug resistant organisms,” says Dr. Kevin Afra, executive medical director, Infection and Prevention Control and Antimicrobial Stewardship Programs. “Being able to identify CPO early will provide more opportunities for quicker intervention and reduced transmission within the long-term care community, and possibly, acute settings, as there can be transfer back and forth between both.”

The screening project aims to achieve several objectives:

•Determine the prevalence of CPO among residents.

•Identify risk factors associated with CPO positivity.

•Inform surveillance strategies.

•Provide recommendations for enhanced infection prevention and control practices.

During the screening process, long-term care staff collect stool samples or rectal

swabs, which are then tested for CPO.

“Our residents’ comfort and dignity remain a priority,” says Dr. Akber Mithani, regional medical director, Integrated Long-Term Care and Assisted Living.

“We’re collaborating with residents, family members and care providers across communities to facilitate testing and create a safe and healthy environment for everyone.” If a resident is found to be carrying or colonizing CPO, they can still fully participate in daily and social activities. Care teams will monitor for early signs of illness and implement enhanced environmental hygiene measures to ensure the safety and well-being of all residents.

It’s essential to recognize that everyone carries germs. For most people, having CPO bacteria in the gut is no more dangerous than encountering other germs. However, vulnerable individuals, especially those in long-term care, face a higher risk of developing serious infections that are challenging to treat.

The World Health Organization (WHO) has declared antimicrobial resistance a significant public health threat. The WHO and the European Centre for Disease Prevention recommend surveillance of long-term care residents to understand the prevalence of CPO and other multidrug-resistant organisms within this population.

A new incentive to green-up your fleet

(NC) With companies increasingly focused on environmental, social and governance best-practices, looking for ways to reduce their carbon footprint is a top priority for many of them. But investing in green products and materials often costs more than the conventional alternatives.

Electric vehicles (EVs), for example, can be substantially more expensive to purchase than a similar vehicle with a gasoline engine.

However, federal programs help offset the higher upfront cost of buying an EV. The Incentives for Zero-Emission Vehicles Program offers rebates of up to $5,000 for the purchase or lease of EVs for personal use.

There’s also a new program for businesses looking to buy or lease work vehicles. It’s called the Incentives for Medium- and Heavy-Duty Zero-Emission Vehicles (iMHZEV) program, and it offers companies and organizations rebates of up to $200,000 on the cost of buying or leasing a zero-emission commercial vehicle.

The business rebate applies to qualifying vans, trucks, coach buses, semi-trucks and more.

It’s applied at the point of sale by the dealer, and it can be combined with any other provincial or territorial EV rebates available where you operate. It applies to purchases or 48-month leases. Shorter leases are prorated according to the lease period.

Businesses may be eligible for up to 10 iMHZEV incentives per calendar year, up to a maximum combined rebate of $1 million.

Beyond the savings at the pump, EVs can be much cheaper to maintain than standard vehicles. For one, there’s no need for regular oil changes and tuneups. There are also fewer moving parts in an EV, meaning fewer things to wear out and break down, like transmission and exhaust systems.

Learn more about these programs by searching zero-emission vehicles on canada.ca.

Parents: Do you know what your teenagers are getting up to?

(NC) The teenage years are a mix of hormones, self-discovery and transitioning from childhood to adulthood. If you have teens – or soon-to-be teens – you may be feeling a sense of growing separation as they become more comfortable on their own.

The growing technology gap doesn’t help that feeling, either. As any parent knows, if you need to figure out how to set up a new electronic device or debug an old one, ask a teenager. They’ve grown up surrounded by technology and are usually among the first to adopt new devices or tools.

They’re also experts at using social media. Unfortunately, some social media content creators – or “influencers” – do questionable things to gain those all-important “likes” and “shares.” And their followers often mimic their risky behaviour. For example, there’s a social media challenge where people are dared to record and share videos of something dangerous happening near a moving train or on railroad tracks.

As past generations have learned, it doesn’t take social media to inspire teens to take risks. Railway tracks have been seen as quick shortcuts for young people for years. There have also been reports of people climbing onto moving trains.

There are countless dangers around tracks and trains that can lead to injuries or even death. It endangers the risk-takers as well as passengers and crews on trains. Flying debris could injure bystanders or damage property, and sparks from sudden braking can start fires.

If your child has shown an interest in protecting the environment, point out how passenger trains are a great way to reduce emissions, instead of people using individual cars.

Another option could be to explain how their part-time job relies on the supply chain, which might hit home for them.
