Diabetes is a serious health condition that affects how the body uses sugar. It’s very common in Canada and around the world, but South Asian people are more likely to develop diabetes and often at a younger age. Even those who look thin or feel fine can still be at risk. That’s why it’s important to learn the basics and get tested regularly.
There are two main types of diabetes. Type 1 usually starts in childhood and is not very common. Type 2 is much more common, especially in adults. It happens when the body doesn’t use a hormone called insulin properly, causing blood sugar to go too high. South Asians are more likely to develop type 2 diabetes, not only because it can run in families, but also due to common dietary habits and lower levels of physical activity.
Many South Asian foods, like white rice, deep-fried snacks, naan made with white flour, and sweet treats like gulab jamun or ladoos, can raise blood sugar quickly. These foods are part of our culture and traditions, and they
can still be enjoyed in moderation. But eating too much of them too often can lead to problems. Making small changes, like eating more vegetables, using whole wheat flour, or switching to brown rice, can help keep blood sugar levels steady.
Sometimes, diabetes shows signs like feeling very thirsty, going to the bathroom a lot, feeling tired all the time, or having blurry vision. But many people don’t feel anything at all, which is why regular checkups are so important. Doctors can test blood sugar through a simple blood test. One test is done first thing in the morning without eating, and another test, called an A1C, shows how blood sugar has been doing over the last few months. People who already have diabetes can check their sugar at home using a small machine that tests a drop of blood from their finger. There are also devices that stick to the skin and track sugar levels all day.
It’s also important to know what happens when sugar levels go too high or too low. When sugar is too low, a
PUNJABI PATRIK A STAFF pMjfbI pwiqRkf stfP
person might feel shaky, dizzy, sweaty, or confused. This can happen if someone skips a meal or takes too much diabetes medicine. Drinking juice or eating a sweet snack usually helps. On the other hand, when sugar is too high, a person might feel very tired, have blurry vision, or feel very thirsty. If that happens often, a doctor might need to adjust the treatment.
Managing diabetes is not just about medicine. Healthy eating, staying active, and regular checkups all make a big difference. Even walking for 20 or 30 minutes a day can help. Foods like lentils (daal), vegetables, and whole grains are great choices. Cutting back on fried foods, sweets, and sugary drinks like pop or sweet chai also helps keep sugar levels down.
Doctors may also give pills or, in some cases, insulin injections to help control blood sugar. It’s important to take them as directed. Keeping an eye on blood pressure, cholesterol, feet, and eyes is also important for people living with
diabetes, as it can affect different parts of the body over time.
Sometimes, people in the South Asian community don’t talk about diabetes because they feel embarrassed or think it’s their fault. But there’s no shame in having diabetes and hiding it can make things worse. Talking openly about health helps families support each other and helps more people get the care they need.
South Asian families often come together around food, and that food brings joy and comfort. But with a few smart changes, meals can still be tasty while being better for health. Baked snacks instead of fried, less sugar in desserts, and smaller portions can all make a difference. Diabetes is common, but it doesn’t have to take over someone’s life. With a little care, good habits, and regular checkups, it can be managed. Knowing the signs, making small changes, and staying connected to healthcare can lead to a longer, healthier life.

xʷməθkʷəy əm (Musqueam), Sḵwxwú7mesh Úxwumixw (Squamish Nation), səlilwətaɬ (Tsleil-Waututh Nation), the Province of British Columbia and the City of Vancouver have signed a historic memorandum of understanding (MOU) committing to work together as partners to host FIFA World Cup 26 matches in Vancouver.
“Musqueam is excited and honoured to be working alongside Squamish, Tsleil-Waututh, the Province of B.C. and the City of Vancouver for the upcoming FIFA World Cup 26 Vancouver,” said Chief Wayne Sparrow, Musqueam. “Throughout the planning and negotiations, Musqueam has been a part of all discussions across every table with FIFA. We are continuing to strengthen and build on the 2010 Olympic legacy with the opportunity to share our history and culture with the world. We're thankful to be able to have our voice heard and to take part in the planning process of a successful FIFA tournament on our traditional territory.”
Sxwíxwtn Wilson Williams, spokesperson, Squamish Nation, said: “We at Sḵwxwú7mesh Úxwumixw (Squamish Nation) believe deeply in the power of sport as a catalyst for growth and change. We are honoured to welcome guests to our shared traditional territories for FIFA World Cup 26. These matches provide an opportunity for us all to share our history and culture with a global audience. And as a true partner throughout every step of the planning process for FIFA World Cup 26, this tournament will generate legacies that
will bring positive and lasting benefits to each of our communities for years to come.”
Chief Jen Thomas, səlilwətaɬ (TsleilWaututh Nation), said: “We’re excited to welcome FIFA World Cup 26 to our shared, traditional territories next year and proud that the world will learn more about the passion that our TsleilWaututh community has for the beautiful game. The signing of this MOU is significant as it recognizes the role our Nations have as equal partners at the table in our active collaboration with the Province and the City of Vancouver to host this historic tournament.”
This landmark agreement reflects a shared commitment to deliver a worldclass event that honours Indigenous rights, advances reconciliation through collaboration on FIFA World Cup 26, and brings lasting benefits to people throughout British Columbia.
“British Columbia is ready to welcome the world for the biggest event our province has ever hosted,” said Premier David Eby. “I want to thank the Musqueam, Squamish and TsleilWaututh Nations for their ongoing contributions toward making this a memorable event for all. It represents our commitment to work together to realize the benefits of some of the Men’s World Cup being played on their shared traditional territories in Vancouver. We are ready to showcase our welcoming and open province to guests from every corner of the globe.”
The MOU sets out a framework for how xʷməθkʷəy əm (Musqueam), Sḵwxwú7mesh Úxwumixw (Squamish
Nation), səlilwətaɬ (Tsleil-Waututh Nation), the Province and the city will work together to plan, stage and host the FIFA World Cup 26 matches, while ensuring interests of the Nations are reflected throughout and approaches to shared opportunities are co-developed.
“Hosting FIFA World Cup 26 is an extraordinary opportunity to showcase our province to the world, and we are determined to do it in a way that reflects who we are and what we value,” said Spencer Chandra Herbert, Minister of Tourism, Arts, Culture and Sport. “This partnership ensures that First Nations are at the table from planning through to match day, so the cultural, social and economic opportunities of the FIFA World Cup reach these communities.”
FIFA World Cup 26 is expected to draw approximately 350,000 spectators to BC Place, generate significant economic activity and create opportunities for local businesses, artists and workers across sectors.
“Partnerships with First Nations strengthen everything we do here in B.C. and hosting FIFA World Cup 26 is no exception,” said Christine Boyle, Minister of Indigenous Relations and Reconciliation. “As we prepare to welcome thousands of visitors to Vancouver next year, our partnership with the City of Vancouver and Musqueam, Squamish and Tsleil-Waututh honours the resilience, legacy and leadership of these Nations.”
The Province and its partners are committed to helping ensure the event leaves social and cultural legacies
that benefit British Columbians well beyond the final whistle.
“FIFA World Cup 26 is set to unite our region through sport and celebration, and with the signing of today’s historic MOU, we take the next step forward,” said Ken Sim, mayor of Vancouver. “Vancouver is proud to be the city of reconciliation. As was the case with the 2010 Olympics, it is our hope that FIFA World Cup 26 will serve as an opportunity to showcase the art, culture and history of the xʷməθkʷəyəm (Musqueam), Sḵwxwú7mesh Úxwumixw (Squamish Nation), səlilwətaɬ (Tsleil-Waututh Nation) peoples.”
Planning for FIFA World Cup 26 is underway. Seven matches are scheduled to be played in Vancouver in 2026.
Quick Facts:
The Truth and Reconciliation Commission’s Call to Action No. 91 tasks officials and host countries of international sporting events, such as the World Cup, to ensure Indigenous Peoples’ territorial protocols are respected and local Indigenous communities are engaged in all aspects of planning and participation in such events.
The economic benefits of hosting seven FIFA World Cup 26 matches are estimated to include more than one million out-of-province visitors between 2026 and 2031, generating more than $1 billion in additional visitor spending and potentially as much as $224 million in direct, indirect and other related provincial tax revenues.
More than five billion global viewers watched FIFA World Cup 22 in Qatar.

Review by Veeno Dewan.
The Toyota 4Runner is a Canadian icon, beloved for its ruggedness, durability, and longevity. It can be found wherever its toughness and reliability is needed; seen in the high desert, deep jungles, Arctic conditions, outside the coffee shop and on family driveways across the world. The new 2025 4Runner is an all- new version with a number of changes. Toyota offers Canadians eight grades including Hybrid grades built around Toyota’s i-FORCE MAX electrified powertrain.
The 2025 4Runner is built off Toyota’s rugged TNGA-F global truck platform, which is shared with the Tacoma, Land Cruiser, Tundra, and Sequoia trucks. Toyota designers crafted a high lift, lean body riding on big tires for a rugged athleticism that expresses the core of 4Runner’s identity. Rugged with a purpose, 4Runner features legacy wrap-over quarter glass and retains the popular roll-down rear hatch window.
Inside, designers created a cabin that emphasizes functionality and ease of operation. The 4Runner is available in a choice of five- or seven-passenger configurations, depending on grade. Under the hood, there is a choice of powertrains: The 4Runner as tested featured a turbocharged 2.4L fourcylinder engine with active noise control, mated to an eight-speed automatic transmission. This generates 278 peak horsepower and up to 317 lb-ft of
torque. 4Runner models are offered in a choice of part-time 4WD or full-time 4WD, depending on trim grade. The standard gasoline model has a fuel consumption of 12.4 L/100km in the city and 9.6 L/100km on the highway.
Technology highlights include the Toyota Multimedia system with Service Connect, Safety Connect, and Remote Connect plus a 14-inch touchscreen. There is also a 14-speaker JBL audio system with JBL FLEX Bluetooth-connected portable speaker, a 12.3-inch full digital gauge cluster, wireless charging dock for personal electronics, and four pre-wired auxiliary switches.
The 2025 Toyota 4Runner starts at $57,840 for the SR5, to $67,342 for the non-hybrid Off Road Premium. Top trims are expensive - $84,138 for the TRD Pro and an alarming $87,841 for the top Trailhunter version. Toyota also offers Canadians the first-ever 4Runner i-FORCE MAX hybrid in four grades. Meanwhile, the 2025 Toyota 4Runner i-FORCE MAX Trailhunter has a plethora of professional grade factory-fitted package of integrated off-roading equipment. The new 4Runner is rated to tow 2,722 kg.
We tested the off-road 4Runner TRD version equipped with the Premium option pack – an expensive package at an extra $9,502! But it does have some serious factory fitted equipment.
The TRD (Toyota Racing Dynamics) spec includes: Bilstein aftermarket shock absorbers, Upgraded Underbody Protection (Engine, Fuel Tank & Transfer Case), TRD Front Grille, Locking Rear Differential, 18” Off Road Alloy Wheels, Vehicle Stability Control, Multi-Terrain Select, Downhill Assist Control, and Crawl Mode. The interior is enhanced with a power Moonroof, power Back door with
Kick Sensor, 8-way Power Adjustable Driver and Passenger Seats, Driver Seat Memory System, and Intuitive Parking Assist. There is also Auto Braking, Heated Leather Wrapped Steering Wheel, 14 -inch Toyota Multimedia system, and Ventilated Front Seats. Also added is: 12.3” Digital Gauge Cluster, Automatic Climate Control, Wireless Charger, 14 -Speaker JBL Audio System with Portable Bluetooth Speaker and more.
Interiors are durable looking, well finished and better than previous generations. Thankfully there are still tactile physical knobs and switches for the HVAC and other functions and I like the 4Runner’s tough rubberized plastic details that look durable. Headroom and legroom are good and the Softex seats wide. and comfortable. The rear cabin has a large 1,371L of cargo space behind the folding second row seats.
Technology wise, Toyota Multimedia integrates wirelessly with both Apple
CarPlay and Android Auto. All models feature Toyota Safety Sense 3.0, designed to enhance driver awareness, decision-making, and control. Meanwhile the Toyota Star Safety system offers: eight airbags, Blind Spot Monitor System with Rear Cross Traffic Alert, backup camera with back guide monitor and rear camera washer, tire pressure monitoring system with auto location, and anti-theft alarm system with engine immobilizer.
The positives are the impressive offroad capability and excellent choice of vehicle configurations to suit most buyers. Negatives are the premium prices for the fully loaded versions. The 4Runner TRD is at its best when off-road exploring or adventure camping. Its multimode 4WD system, and high ground clearance make it masterful on rocky trails and out in the boonies. In a world of pretender ‘soft roaders” the tough truck-based body on frame4Runner is extremely capable off-road, with good towing ability and cargo carrying capacity. The 4runner is a legend and deservedly so. The TRD Premium version just elevates the performance to another level. Highly recommended.
2025 Toyota 4Runner TRD PremiumPriced from $57,840 - $87,841.
Price as tested - $63,702 with option plus freight and PDI.
Final price - $65,768.

The Abbotsford Canucks have captured the championship title in spectacular fashion, closing out a dominant playoff run that united the entire city in celebration. With a 10-3 playoff record and a 4-2 series win in the finals against Charlotte Checkers, the Canucks delivered a season to remember.
Fuelled by depth, determination, and a passionate fan base, the team’s success was highlighted by standout performances from several Abbotsford players who stepped up when it mattered most.
Arshdeep Bains continued his excellent season by contributing 12 points in the playoffs, including a game-winning goal in Game 4 of the finals. Kalam Gahir proved to be a reliable force on both ends of the ice, logging key minutes on the penalty kill and tallying a crucial assist in the series-clinching game.
Their impact throughout the playoffs has been a point of pride for the Abbotsford community, inspiring the next generation of local athletes and hockey fans alike.
“This team showed us what’s possible when heart, hard work, and hometown spirit come together,” said one fan outside the Abbotsford Centre following the victory.
With this championship win, the Abbotsford Canucks have solidified their place in the city’s sports history. The energy, passion, and talent displayed throughout the playoffs have brought the community together — and with rising local stars leading the charge, the future of hockey in Abbotsford has never looked brighter.

People in British Columbia are invited to provide feedback about CleanBC, the Province’s plan to improve energy efficiency, reduce emissions and increase the use of clean energy.
An independent review of CleanBC’s programs and policies is underway and public input will help inform its findings.
The review is assessing how well CleanBC is working, where improvements could be made and how its programs affect people, communities and the economy.
Feedback can be submitted through a short survey until Aug. 1, 2025.
CleanBC includes supports for cleaner transportation, home and building upgrades, and reducing emissions from industry. It aims to help British Columbia transition to a low-carbon economy, while keeping energy affordable and reliable.
The review is being led by independent climate-policy experts Merran Smith and Dan Woynillowicz. The panel will engage with Indigenous people, local governments, environmental non-government organizations, industry, climate experts,
the Climate Solutions Council and other interest holders.
In addition to public feedback, interested parties, including affected industry professionals, labour representatives, environmental NGOs and climate experts, are invited to make written submissions to CleanBCReview@gov.bc.ca until 4 p.m. on July 18, 2025.
First Nations rights and title holders, Indigenous organizations and local governments are invited to make written submissions to CleanBCReview@gov.bc.ca until 4 p.m. on Aug. 1, 2025.
Submission should be a maximum of 2,500 words. All submissions will be read and considered as part of the CleanBC review.
Key dates for the review: Sept. 1, 2025 – Draft recommendations submitted to government Oct. 15, 2025 – Final recommendations submitted
Late fall 2025 – Final report released publicly

Any hectic activity that has just started to You are in a good position to make some final decisions on something you may have first considered late July to mid August. The position of somebody else may be clearer now, particularly if they decide to bring something to an end. If this does happen it can make it easier in some way when it comes to normal routines in life.
Whatever you had to rethink when it comes to putting things in place since mid August will now allow you to be clear of mind to late September when it comes to something that might have been first discussed late July to mid August. You can now make decisions that please you. Don’t be tempted to spend too much though.
Someone else can be very straightforward as to what they either like or expect from you. Be careful you don’t read into this more than is being offered, particularly if there is an expectation for you to take on responsibilities or to put things in place. Make decisions up to late September that will keep you in control of your finances.
Whatever financial decisions you may have first considered from late July to mid August can now be looked at more thoroughly, especially in relation to the best actions to take to be able to move forward. You need to be able to satisfy your own priorities, which may not necessarily fit in with the expectations of somebody else.
You are in an excellent position to be able to make decisions to late September that will take your life forward. You can feel as though you have greater personal choice or some control at last. There might be a second stage to this from January to April next year and for this reason it could be wise to ensure there is some flexibility.
Focus on anything you are determined to develop more for your own independence in the future. You can realise that contemplation alone will not move things forward. From now to early September you need to look at the commitments that would need to be taken on. Doing this in stages will help you to get used to the changes.
You are in a good position to come to realisations regarding any situations where you might feel as though you are taking on more than is reasonable on a regular basis. This is more about making decisions to bring matters to an end where commitments attached will have an inhibiting effect on possible future accomplishments.
Having absolute confidence about how you stand on any matter will engender respect from others, even though they may not fully agree with you. This could result in clarity when it comes to commitment and support, which may have been an issue from late July to mid August and was left hanging. Be mindful of the obligations you take on.
You could come to the realisation, from now to late September, that it is better to scale down ideas you might have had late July to mid August to be able to take these things into the future successfully. Others might have bigger ambitions but you can be happier with small steps, allowing you to have a feeling of better control.
You are in a position to late September to contemplate future plans and possibilities that you may have wanted from late July to mid August but could not finalise. You have the opportunity to engage with others and get a response. This could also have a lot to do with leaving the past behind up to 20th November so you can move on with a new life direction.
Something you thought had become evident since mid August where someone else’s decision making is concerned could again become more unknown to late September. It could be that they need to withdraw to make final decisions. These could involve taking your priorities into account as well as generating some sort of pleasure in life.
Something that wasn’t made perfectly clear or finalised by somebody else between late July and mid August can now return to late September where final decisions need to be made by them. It can be up to you to ensure they do not avoid responsibilities that could leave you with too much to get properly organised or put into place.
Preliminary reporting released by the BC Coroners Service (BCCS) finds that 165 people died from unregulated toxic drugs in April 2025.
In 2025, deaths among those between the ages of 30 and 59 accounted for 68% of drug-toxicity deaths in the province, and 77% were male.
April marks a return to more than 160 deaths attributed to unregulated drug toxicity reported to the BC Coroners Service after six consecutive months of reporting fewer than 160 deaths a month.
By health authority in 2025, the highest number of unregulated drug deaths were in Fraser and Vancouver Coastal health authorities (185 and 155 deaths,
respectively) making up 57% of all such deaths during 2025.
Consistent with reporting throughout the public-health emergency, fentanyl and its analogues continue to be the most common substance detected in expedited toxicological testing. More than threequarters of decedents who underwent expedited testing in 2025 were found to have fentanyl in their systems (68%), followed by methamphetamine (51%) and cocaine (48%).
It is important to note that data from the report is preliminary and subject to change as additional toxicological results are received and investigations conclude.

Additional key findings in 2025 include:
the number of unregulated drug deaths in April 2025 equates to approximately 5.5 deaths per day;
the cities experiencing the highest number of unregulated drug deaths so far in 2025 are Vancouver, Surrey and Greater Victoria;
the highest rates of deaths reported were in Northern Health (46 deaths per
100,000 individuals) and Interior Health (35 per 100,000 individuals);
47% of deaths reported occurred in a private residence, compared with 21% outdoors; and
smoking continues to be the primary mode of consumption of unregulated toxic drugs, with 64% of investigations indicating the decedent smoked their substances.
People working in the construction industry benefit from ongoing access to opioid-free pain-management options as the Province supports two pain clinics in Burnaby and Langford.
“People in the construction industry need specialized supports with mental-health and substance-use challenges,” said Josie Osborne, Minister of Health. “By continuing to fund the Opioid-Free Pain Clinics by Construction Industry Rehabilitation Plan, we are expanding access to safer paintreatment options that support recovery from injuries, reduce harm and improve overall well-being.”
In spring 2025, the Ministry of Health provided $160,000 to the Construction Industry Rehabilitation Plan (CIRP) for its Opioid-Free Pain Clinics, which provide pain-management options for construction workers and offer evidence-based approaches to pain relief without pharmacological interventions.
“The Opioid-Free Pain Clinic offers a groundbreaking solution to a serious problem facing construction workers,
managing pain without the risk of opioid dependency,” said Vicky Waldron, executive director of the Construction Industry Rehabilitation Plan. “This innovative program is already delivering powerful results and we’re deeply grateful to the Ministry of Health for supporting a new path forward for workers who need effective, safe and long-term pain relief.”
This funding will support the continued operation of the two clinics that provide pain-relief services to people working in the construction industry. Services include myoActivation, an evidence-based triggerpoint therapy approach, which focuses on needling therapy and counsellor-led selfmanagement sessions.
“Both the construction industry and years of drug abuse have taken turns wrecking my body, but the support I have received, notably myoActivation, has brought me through to the other side of that pain,” said Ryan, CIRP pain clinic client. “When I wake up to go to work, I no longer feel crippled and more often than not, I am smiling. CIRP kept me working through this rehabilitation, kept me off the streets
and allowed me to keep the positive momentum I needed so much.”
The Burnaby clinic has been open to patients since 2020 and has supported more than 120 patients attending more than 1,500 appointments, with opioid-free pain-management options. Following its success, a second clinic in Langford was opened in fall 2024.
increasing early intervention and prevention;
adding and expanding treatment and recovery services;
This work is part of the Province’s work to build up the entire continuum of mentalhealth and substance-use care so people get the right support. This work includes:
building supportive and complex-care housing; and adding overdose prevention services.
The 2024-25 Declaration Act Annual Report showcases the collaborative effort being made by the Province and Indigenous Peoples to implement the United Nations Declaration on the Rights of Indigenous Peoples (UN Declaration) in B.C. and build a better future.
The report, which covers the period between April 1, 2024, and March 31, 2025, details work underway on 78 of 89 specific Declaration Act Action Plan actions, as well progress to align provincial laws with the UN Declaration.
The Province is working shoulder to shoulder with Indigenous governments and organizations on partnerships that support healthy communities, improve the education system, create economic opportunities, strengthen sustainable stewardship of the land, water and resources, and improve services and community safety.
Highlights found within the report include:
Launching a new co-governance structure with 17 First Nations and Canada to protect and conserve marine wildlife and habitats in the Great Bear Sea, and support stewardship efforts led by First Nations (learn more on page 36 of the report).
Creating partnerships between Indigenous knowledge holders and the Province on cultural and prescribed fires. This includes expanding the number of engaged, knowledgeable and experienced people who can safely and collaboratively use fire as a tool for land stewardship, while working to remove existing barriers to Indigenous uses of fire (page 46).
Putting a new graduation requirement in place for the 2023-24 school year
ensures all students complete Indigenousfocused coursework before they graduate from B.C.’s K-12 education system. More than 45,000 graduates have completed at least four Indigenous-focused courses since implementation of the new requirement. Prior to implementation, fewer than 5% of graduates had taken any Indigenousfocused courses at the secondary-school level (page 61).
child care spaces throughout B.C. and 2,200 free Aboriginal Head Start child care spaces with culturally relevant programming (page 114).
