New ICBC collision, glass repair programs to save costs, improve accountability

I

CBC and industry partners have worked together to redesign collision and glass repair programs to generate savings for ICBC and promote high-performing shops to serve drivers better. Once fully implemented, repair shops will be ranked by performance based on various metrics. The ranking will be placed on a shop-locator ICBC webpage, enabling drivers to make informed choices about where to take their vehicles for repair, while encouraging shops to be top performers. “After consulting with industry leaders, the redesign of the collision and glass repair programs will improve transparency and accountability of repair shops for drivers who get into accidents and need to choose which repair shop they go to,” said David Eby, Attorney General. “By publicly ranking the repair shops by performance, where repair shops strive to be the top performers, we expect that this will help curb some of the rising

has grown in so many ways. In recent months, with the emergence of COVID-19, we have been stretched and our learning has been the greatest,” shared Laurel Jarvis, the Foundry Service Delivery Coordinator.

The Province of BC recently announced plans to open an additional eight Foundry centres in Langley, Surrey, Burns Lake, Comox Valley, Cranbrook and Kimberley, Port Hardy, Squamish, & Williams Lake.

“I am proud of our staff, partners and clients for how quickly everyone adapted to virtual care. We look forward to the days when we can, once again, see clients face to face. Until then, we continue to adapt to the new normal and do our best to provide the best possible services to our clients. “

For youth and families not living near a Foundry centre, Foundry recently launched a new province-wide virtual service accessible by voice, video and chat for young people ages 12-24 and their caregivers in British Columbia. What Brain Injury Support Groups Are Available to Me During COVID-19?

T

he COVID-19 pandemic is keeping us physically apart, but BC brain injury support groups continue to bring people together, albeit in new ways. What Are Brain Injury Support Groups? Brain injury support groups are available for people with traumatic brain injuries and for their family, friends, and caregivers. Coping with the symptoms and effects of a brain injury can be socially isolating, physically demanding, and emotionally draining. A good support system can make a significant difference on the road to rehabilitation and recovery. Brain injury support groups offer many potential benefits: an invaluable emotional outlet; the opportunity to learn new strategies and coping skills; and the chance to connect with other resources to promote well-being and recovery, such as rehabilitation services, educational programs, and recreation/social activities.

The group got together once a month for seminars and worked online for the rest of the assignments and lectures. “My cohort in the MSW program consisted of a group of passionate social workers who worked in various areas in the field of social work. I would set my alarm for 5:30 a.m. so I could do a couple of hours of reading and schoolwork before my workday started, and weekends were pretty well all about school work. I am grateful to my husband, children, and family for encouraging and supporting me and allowing me the space to focus on my studies while I was in the MSW program.” It was a nice surprise when she found out that her hard work had paid off with a perfect GPA and the Governor General’s Gold Medal.

Van Ry has another important mentor at UFV. Her aunt is Dr. Wenona Hall, an associate professor of Indigenous Studies, who encouraged her to take on the research project with Keith Carlson. And Hall is encouraging Van Ry to continue her education at the graduate level. “I don’t think I’m done with my education. After some time teaching elementary school, I’d like to go on and earn my master’s and PhD and teach at the university level. Maybe I’ll come back and teach here and be a true UFV lifer!” And the family mentors reach back into her grandparents’ generation.

“My grandfather Robert Francis Hall Sr, son of Gordon Hall of Skowkale, was an advocate for the recognition and acknowledgement of the rights of education to elementary-age students Indigenous peoples. He spent much through school-based physical and health education. Van Ry is receiving her second credential, a Bachelor of Education, from UFV this spring, after having completed a Bachelor of Kinesiology in 2018. Udta Punjab changed me : Diljit Dosanjh

Abhishek Chaubey's film "Udta Punjab" was released four years ago on this day. Diljit Dosanjh, who made his Bollywood debut as an actor with the multistarrer, says he learnt a lot from the movie. Diljit took to Instagram to share a

Don't know the status of my films : Alaya F Following an acting debut in a film alongside Saif Ali Khan, Alaya F could have seamlessly found herself choosing between the most promising projects, for her subsequent ventures. Well aware that the first year of venturing into Bollywood is a decisive one, the actor is looking forward to shooting post the lockdown. "My film released, and then we went into lockdown. I had just entered the industry, and had charted a long [journey] to get to this point. I was in conversation with a few people for some projects, but now I don't know where the films stand. We are in a state of limbo," she laments, but goes on to add that she is in the midst of preparing for a project that she cannot reveals details about. With her contemporaries venturing into digital space, Alaya says she isn't unnerved with the idea of doing a web show, early on in her career. "I have received a lot of offers, and I am interested in dabbling in the OTT space. If a project resonates with me, I will do it." In the interim, she is keeping herself busy learning the ropes of filmmaking. The art of editing has particularly caught her attention. "I am trying to relearn skills that I learnt in film school, like editing the final cut, apart from taking to new software like Photoshop." The youngster also makes it a point to dedicate time to maintaining her fitness levels, with the array of yoga classes available online, catching her attention.

clip featuring him from the film. "Baut kuch seekha es film se. (Learned a lot from this film). Thx To My Fav. Director Abhishekchaubey Sir & honeytrehan Bhaji 4YearsofUdtaPunjab diljitdosanjh," Diljit captioned the clip. The film, which also stars Shahid Kapoor, Alia Bhatt and Kareena Kapoor Khan, revolves around drug abuse by the youth in the state of Punjab. "Udta Punjab" faced problems from the Central Board of Film Certification (CBFC). As a result, the producers were directed to make a total of 89 cuts in the film. Meanwhile, Diljit latest Bollywood release, "Good Newwz", is set to re-release in Dubai when theatres reopen, as an initial step towards regaining normalcy after the COVID-19 pandemic. Also starring Akshay Kumar, Kareena Kapoor Khan and Kiara Advani, "Good Newwz" is a comedy about two couples trying to have a baby through IVF.

It is a very special role : Ritika Badiani

Actress Ritika Badiani describes her role in Chaman Bahaar as a very special one. The film, which also stars Jitendra Kumar, is set in a small town in India. It is a story of unrequited love. "It's a very special role. The role demanded that I establish a strong connect without saying much. I was very particular about my body language, gestures and expressions

so that my character got portrayed correctly. What really helped was my co-star Jitendra Kumar who made it so much better because as an actor, he is extremely enthusiastic and gives it his 100 per cent. Professionally as well as personally, I have learnt a lot from him," said Ritika. "Chaman Bahar" is the first feature film that Apurva Dhar Badgaiyann has directed. He said: "I have grown up in many small towns because of the nature of my father's job. The cool thing about smaller towns is that they are filled with quirky and colourful characters. When I moved out of Chhattisgarh, I developed an outsider's perspective to my own people and that made tapping the milieu and its inhabitants easier. The difficult part was the plot to crack which was enabled at the right time when a friend of mine one day narrated a real-life incident.

After the industry ganged up on me, I felt lonely : Kangana Ranaut Sushant Singh Rajput’s death by suicide has led to debates around nepotism and how ‘outsiders’ are treated in the Hindi film industry. Actor Kangana Ranaut, who has previously talked about the issue, has once again raised questions on the functioning of Bollywood. Bringing back people’s attention to her infamous legal battle with Hrithik Roshan, Kangana said in a statement, “Once Javed Akhtar had called me to his house and told me that Rakesh Roshan and his family are very big people. If you don’t apologise to them, you will have nowhere to go. They will put you in jail, and eventually, the only path would be that of destruction… you will

commit suicide. These were his words. Why did he think if I don’t apologise to Hrithik Roshan, I would have to commit suicide? He shouted and yelled at me. I was shaking in his house.”Comparing Sushant Singh Rajput’s situation to her’s, she continued, “Were there people calling Sushant? Were there people putting such thoughts into his mind? I have no idea, but obviously, he was in a similar situation. In his interviews, he had said that nepotism cannot co-exist with talent because they don’t allow the right talent to come up. I can relate to it, and hence I am raising questions. I want to know who played the catalyst in this situation?”Kangana Ranaut recalled how, like Sushant, she had a fallout with Aditya Chopra after which the filmmaker “threatened” her and said he would never work with her.

has to say about rumours of her dating Sanya Malhotra : Fatima Sana Shaikh Actress Fatima Sana Shaikh says she laughed off reports of her dating her Dangal co-star Sanya Malhotra. "We simply laughed about it. Just because we are good friends, they assumed the worst," she said, talking about the rumour. Asked about three things that she learnt from Sanya, Fatima said: "I have learnt a lot from her. For one, Sanya likes to keep everything clean. While she is an introvert and I am an extrovert, I learnt to hold myself back at times. I also learnt a lot from her dedication to work."Talking about

her diverse religious background and upbringing, the actress said: "It makes me feel like the ideal poster girl for secular India. The beauty of our country is that we are so diverse and all of us are okay with just being ourselves, follow our own religion and accept everybody."On Bollywood superstars, she clearly like Shah Rukh Khan. "I would love to see Shah Rukh Khan strip on the streets of Mumbai!" she said. "I think the perfect scene of a man proposing to his wife atop the Eiffel tower would be of Shah Rukh Khan and me," she added

Mission to Host Virtual Canada Day Celebration The District of Mission’s annual Can- on the District of Mission’s Facebook ada Day Celebration will be delivered virtually this year in an action-packed one-hour live broadcast hosted by national treasure Brent Hayden, an Olympic medalist and public speaker with roots in Mission. “Canada Day is a cherished community event in Mission, one that attracts residents and visitors alike,” said Mayor Pam Alexis. “While it would be impossible to deliver our usual celebration at Fraser River Heritage Park this year because of the COVID-19 restrictions, a Virtual Canada Day is a perfect way for us to safely come together to celebrate this incredible place we call home while we have to be apart.” “This year, as everyone knows, is unlike any other. We’ve faced and adapted to a vast amount of swift and necessary change, but we’re doing it and we’re doing it together,” she said. “We are defined as a community by the actions of our citizens and I couldn’t be prouder. Mission, you never cease to amaze me.” On July 1 at 10:30 a.m., the special Canada Day broadcast will stream live

PAGE 32

page, on mission.ca/canadaday and on YouTube Live. After the broadcast is over, the video will be available on Facebook or YouTube throughout the day and afterwards in an archive. Designed to be uniquely Mission, the District’s Virtual Canada Day will feature a welcoming ceremony from Leq'á:mel First Nation, a performance of the national anthem, a flag raising ceremony by the Royal Canadian Legion, speeches from local dignitaries, as well as a series of short segments highlighting a few outstanding community members ranging from non-profits, frontline workers, musicians, dancers, artists and more. “While a virtual celebration wasn’t how we imagined we’d be celebrating Canada’s 153rd birthday when staff started planning our usual event before the pandemic started, we have a fantastic opportunity here to highlight our incredible community in a video that can be shared and enjoyed within the comforts of home. I’m really looking forward to tuning in on July 1,” Alexis said.

Having to wait is something you cannot do much about right now. Attempting to make decisions in any situation that has a lot of uncertainties attached is not wise. Promises from somebody else to make commitments or take on certain responsibilities may not happen. Contemplate what you have the ability to establish

You could be disappointed with a friend or somebody within a group of people you are dealing with. Some sort of limitation or restrictions with finances could be linked in with this. At the same time though you have the opportunity to gain a clearer picture on the true situation and whether it fits with your own priorities.

Anything you want recognition or appreciation for may prove difficult to gain. It may make you realise that a lot more can be expected of you than you are willing to give. The reason for this can be that you feel someone else will benefit more than you. This would be a good time to dissolve any outdated obligations you have.

Don’t discount any suspicions you might have on the direction a matter could take in the future. You might get all sorts of assurances that you find difficult to be comfortable about. The main thing is to keep your mind focussed on your own position or situation so that you are ready for any changes you might need to make.

Exactly what somebody else is expecting could be difficult to ascertain. They may be giving the impression of willingness to be adaptable when this is what they want from you. If you wonder about whether they know what they want – they do. You should not openly express your ideas. There will be much to consider to August.

Somebody else can be rather forceful in a subtle way. You need to be alert to not giving them more authority than you feel comfortable about. If you have authority, be sure you maintain it. Stay focussed on your priorities. These might need to go through some change later but to avoid regrets, now is not the time for alterations.

If you haven’t been paying enough attention to your health and general well being you could now feel the consequences of this, mainly with lowered energy levels. This could also apply to details you have not been keeping on top of with any matter. For proper progress in the future you need to apply yourself to July.

You will be more inclined towards taking it easy than pushing yourself too hard. Someone else could have other ideas but it may not hurt you to take a momentary break from things, especially if you are not sure whether matters are heading in a direction that you could be happy about in the long term. There is no rush.

You may wonder whether something is as secure as you thought when it comes to situations that have been put in place involving others. Most important is that you do not take any chances when it comes to your finances, which could include any advice that is given. You need to focus on whatever gives you underlying security.

Any attempt to gain clarity on details as to whether something should be finished or let go of can seem conflicting. You need to be sure that information you are accessing is reliable. Somebody who is completely removed from the matter could provide much to think about in that they may be able to give you alternative ideas.

There could be a sense of disappointment because of not having, at your disposal, the resources you would like to enjoy certain things in life. This can be more about letting go of something pleasurable, for the moment at least. You might realise that you could benefit from giving greater consideration to changes with daily routines.

Clear awareness of the action you would need to take to put in motion something you would like to accomplish is likely to have options you had not previously considered. Getting the foundation in place is likely to unsettle priorities that have been important for quite some time. Take your time contemplating your happiness.

Gerda Fandrich Named 2020 Order British Columbians invited to have of Abbotsford Recipient their say on recovery he recipient of the 2020 Order of Abbotsford is Gerda Fandrich for her deep commitment to public service, passion for education and fostering the next generation, announced Mayor Henry Braun today.

T

Gerda lived in Poland and East and West Germany where she spent six months in a refugee camp. With her family, Gerda moved to Vancouver in 1953 and graduated from the University of British Columbia with a Bachelor of Education in 1966. After relocating to Abbotsford in 1979, Gerda began her public service to the community in 1985 as a Trustee on the Board of Education. She served for a total of 23 years on the Board, having been re-elected 8 times. Her contribution to local education saw her take on the role of Vice-Chair a total of six times, and ultimately rising to become Chairperson of the Board. During this time, she worked consistently to raise student achievement in academic, vocational/technical training, the arts, and citizenship. Gerda believes passionately in ensuring that the next generation is imbued with hope, character, education, and moral foundation to enable them to face the challenges of the future. Further examples of Gerda’s community contribution can be seen through her work on the Abbotsford Community Foundation as the longest serving board member. Here, she administered and awarded public and private school scholarships to students pursuing post-secondary education. She also served on the board of the Fraser Valley Regional Library, and the UCFV (now known as University of the Fraser Valley), Community Council, and was also elected to the Clearbrook Waterworks District as one of five board members. She was the first woman to ever hold that position and oversaw the organization receive global recognition as the ‘best water in the world’ over six times.

sic. She was part of a small group that founded the Bakerview Music Academy in 2013 to provide free music lessons to children from challenging socioeconomic backgrounds. Up to 90 students per year have benefitted from this program, taught by professional teachers and volunteers. Bakerview Music Academy is recognized for promoting social change through the power of music with the view that music is something for everyone – not just a select few. Gerda was also a founding partner of her family business, Fandrich Cone Harvesters Inc. which she started alongside her husband Helmut in 1981. Their company has been responsible for reforesting vast areas of North America. In this role, Gerda was responsible for developing the Fandrich Cone Harvesters Scholarship, which has provided educational funding for students interested in pursuing engineering for the last 22 years. The late Mayor of Abbotsford, George Ferguson, spoke highly of Gerda remarking on her being steadfast in her beliefs while also remaining open to the view of others. She was seen as a hardworking and fair negotiator, with a “personal integrity beyond reproach”, and was an ambassador for Abbotsford in fostering a ‘Sister-City’ relationship with the city of Fukagawa in Japan. She has traveled to a total of 105 countries, bringing back intercultural learnings from each place to help enrich her own community. She has been recognized as a Lifetime Honourary Member of the BC School Trustees Association, was named one of Abbotsford’s most influential people in 2009, and was Woman of the Year in 2008 with the Business and Professional Women’s Club.

In recognition of her leadership, extensive volunteer service and dedication to the community, Gerda Gerda’s legacy can also be seen Fandrich is receiving the 2020 Order through her contribution to local mu- of Abbotsford.

WE BELIEVE IN ABBOTSFORD. and we think you should, too.

Picture the difference between celebrating Canada Day alone, and a gathering with family and friends, music and food, conversations and connections. That’s the difference Abbotsford Tech District will make for the Fraser Valley tech sector. It will create a gathering place for innovation and entrepreneurship by BC-based startup companies, with a focus on agricultural technology and aerospace. More young people will be able to stay in Abbotsford for education, affordable homes, and family-supporting jobs that embrace our agricultural roots to grow our future. Everyone will benefit as a multi-billion-dollar private sector investment strengthens the local economy. To learn more, go to www.abbotsford.tech.
