3 ideas for a chilly fall day (NC) Fall is that special inbetween season where the days can be warm, crisp, rainy or snowy as we enter winter – in fact, you might experience all four seasons in one day. Here are some activities to check off as you soak up one of the most beautiful seasons in Canada: Enjoy a scenic drive: Looking for a last-minute day trip or an entire weekend getaway? Fall is the perfect time to do so. Buckle up, sit front row, play some tunes and take in the vibrant, multi-coloured landscapes as they pass by. There aren’t many places where you can experience the leaves turning bright yellow and red overnight, but Canada is one of them. Squeeze in a cabin getaway: Make the most of your next weekend at the cabin. Grab a good book, a cup of apple cider and you’re all set. You’ll be covered no matter the weather with Mark’s wide selection of men’s and

HAPPY THANKSGIVING DAY

women’s flannel shirts – add a toque to your cart while you’re there to complete the ensemble. The selection of men’s and women’s apparel and footwear at Mark’s keep you warmer, dryer, safer and more comfortable. Take a photo, it’ll last longer: Every year, mother nature puts on a breathtaking show of all the beautiful fall foliage. From British Columbia to Nova Scotia, and everywhere inbetween, set some time aside for you and your camera to get swept away with the leaves in some of the most breathtaking locations the country has to offer.

Tips on how to help your child manage a learning disability in the classroom (NC) Finding out that your child has a learning disability can be stressful. We all want the best for our kids, but when you don’t know how to help, panic can set in. The first step is to take a breath, then learn as much as you can about your child’s strengths, weaknesses and needs. Then, get involved. There are things you can do to support them and help them succeed.

learning disability. Provide information and direction to authoritative resources. Don’t be afraid to “be the expert” on your child.

“Having an invisible disability such as dyslexia can be difficult to explain and make others understand,” says Be an advocate. Work with the school to create a Christine Staley, executive director of supportive environment that caters to children with a Dyslexia Canada. “Knowing that someone is in their corner can greatly improve a student’s self-esteem and performance.” Keep it positive and focus on strengths. Parents should help children stay positive. Encourage children to participate in activities that showcase their strengths, remind them that everyone has things they are good at and not so good at. Find solutions to classroom struggles using these strengths. “If a student

is being asked to do a research project, instead of submitting it in writing, they could do an oral presentation, submit a poster board, create a video – wherever their strengths lie,” says Staley. Self-Advocacy. At some point, kids will need to explain what they need without their parents’ help. Help kids learn to explain their disability to others. Have them practice in front of family members. Teach them to ask for help and understand what support they are entitled to. Offering children and families support in navigating the challenges that come with having a learning disability greatly increases their chances of doing well both in school and in life. .C. artists are featuring the vibrancy and diversity of the province’s arts and culture sector, with some groups benefiting for the first time from the latest round of BC Arts Council grants. “B.C.’s rich cultural diversity gives people an opportunity to experience artistic traditions from all around the world and to promote inclusion and understanding in our communities,” said Lisa Beare, Minister of Tourism, Arts and Culture. “One of our goals in increasing BC Arts Council funding to record levels is to provide a platform for expression for artists and arts and culture organizations that were previously under-served, in order to showcase the variety of creative perspectives and voices of B.C. artists.” The B.C. government is distributing more than $9.8 million in provincial funding through 394 grants in more than 50 communities in the latest round of funding administered by the BC Arts Council.

Part of the council’s new strategic plan to enhance arts and cultural development throughout the province is to increase equity, diversity and access. The result is more first-time recipients, such as the Royal Academy of Bhangra Society, which offers bhangra classes for all ages, genders and backgrounds, as well as creating collaborative, inclusive events that build cultural bridges in the community. “We’re delighted to receive provincial support for our upcoming event Folk Lok Live: Borderless,” said Hardeep Singh Sahota, director of the Royal Academy of Bhangra Society. “The Folk Lok Live series is a way for us to come together and celebrate our rich culture and history by sharing our stories, dance and music. This year, we are connecting the Pakistani and Indian Punjabi community by celebrating the shared pre-partition heritage, because we strongly believe that art can be a mechanism for social change.”

Don’t relieve stress – eliminate it (NC) Dealing with stress is practically a modern hobby. We invest fortunes in the latest fads for stress relief: spas, relaxation techniques, books, phone apps, gadgets and gizmos designed to ease our minds. But are we really taking the most effective approach? If stress-relief techniques aren’t cutting it, go to the source. Take some serious time to evaluate the causes of stress in your life so you can reduce and eliminate them. Here are some common stressors and ideas for how to address them. Money. Consumer culture tells us to spend, spend, spend, and it’s easy to get caught up in the hype. But not feeling in control of your financial situation can be a major stress point. Make sure your purchases are things that really bring you joy and aren’t just for keeping up with the neighbours. Having a monthly budget will keep you on track and bring back your sense of control. If you’re feeling overwhelmed, seek help from a financial planner. Having a good handle on your finances can lift a huge weight from your shoulders. Your home. Shelter is a basic human need – we all need a safe haven where we can rest and relax. If your living situation brings you more stress than comfort, imagine (realistically) what kind of home would bring you peace. That mansion in the hills is a fun fantasy, but keep your goals achievable.

If too much maintenance is wearing you out, look at downsizing. If you’re feeling isolated, look for walkable neighbourhoods that offer social networks and amenities, like Parkbridge’s land-lease communities. If clutter is making you claustrophobic, purge. Enlist the help of friends or an organizing expert if you have trouble things letting go. Your environment. The people we interact with, our homes, workspaces and larger environment all have a huge effect on our well-being. Think about your previous week and where you were during times of stress. Perhaps talking with a negative acquaintance, sitting in traffic or working in a noisy office were triggers. Once you identify your stress points, you can do something about them. Changes can be big, but don’t have to be. Simply cutting out a toxic relationship, finding a more scenic route to work or investing in some noise-cancelling headphones may be a great first step in reducing your environmental stressors. Tackle one issue at a time and work your way from small on up.

How to maintain a lush, healthy lawn all year (NC) You know that using a fertilizer can promote a healthy lawn or greenspace, but do you know how best to apply it? You’ll get the best bang for your buck if you take some simple steps to make sure your fertilizer is able to be used by the grass and is not lost to waterways, sidewalks or otherwise. Follow the 4Rs of responsible fertilizer use:

Right source: Buy the right fertilizer for your lawn. Review your options at your local home and garden centre by reading the bag or testing your soil; this can be done by a professional or with a home kit. The three numbers on the bag indicate the ratio of three key nutrients included in all fertilizers: nitrogen, phosphorus and potassium, listed in this order. Meaning, if a bag reads 21-4-3 it contains 21 per cent nitrogen, four per cent phosphorus and three per cent potassium.

Right rate: Know the size of your lawn. Buy only what you need, follow the instructions on the bag and remember that more is not always better. Use a good-quality lawn fertilizer spreader or a handheld model to distribute the product evenly across your lawn. Right time: Before winter rolls around, keep in mind that plant roots tend to go dormant in the driest parts of summer and in winter, when the ground is frozen. So, it’s important to focus on fertilizing in the spring and fall when

plants need nutrients the most and avoid applying fertilizer if heavy rain is expected, or if the ground is frozen. Right place: After fertilizing, sweep any stray fertilizer on driveways, patios and sidewalks back onto your lawn where it can do its job. Because too much phosphorus in the water can promote algae growth, select a phosphorus-free fertilizer if you live near a pond, lake or stream. Take care to prevent fertilizer from running off into sewers.

You can have a great deal of success in eliminating anything you may have been contemplating since mid August. This should not be based on a sudden realisation now but more on carefully considered details. Something can now become clearer because of being able to see the position somebody else will definitely take.

It will be difficult to get things running smoothly which can result in making you highly agitated, even to the point of doing something silly just to rebel. This could just leave you with a bigger headache to sort out. You need to be mindful that somebody else will put themselves first and not worry about disappointing you.

Something you expect to fall into place easily could come up with some unforseen surprises. For this reason you should not take a risk with anything in the hope that it works in your favour. There is somebody you can rely on but there are also those who will leave you with all the work. You have to pay attention to sort this out.

You can experience a turning point with others where you have been meeting resistance over the last 4 months. Part of this could be because you realise there is no point in attempting to make changes that are too radical. A lot though could be put down to having been consistent with either your ideas, planning or both.

Take care of financial necessities first. This can certainly include what you need to survive on a daily basis. Any temptation to suddenly take on greater financial responsibilities should not be taken, especially if somebody else is encouraging this. It will be through a steady process that you will eventually gain greater security.

You can feel strongly empowered and this can correspond with having had some success with actions you have decided to take. You should not try to focus on changes this could create in the long-term future, as that will be too difficult to predict. The main thing is to be confident about your own practical progress.

Your thinking can be much clearer now that Mercury has moved into your own sign until 3rd October. Venus, your ruling planet has also done the same until 9th October. This will give a far greater sense of balance and perspective as well as a feeling that you can move forward. Don’t feel guilty focussing on your own needs.

Sudden awareness that important priorities to you may not fit in with what somebody else wants or expects. This does not mean you should consider making adjustments to suit them. You need to stay mentally firm but expressing this openly would not be the best line of approach. Being secretive is necessary for now.

You need to be very realistic about commitments and finances. This might also have something to do with your work and what are reasonable expectations in relation to what you are paid. Don’t attempt to change daily routines too dramatically in the hope that it leads to progress. It may instead overwhelm you.

Something is turning around that can give you a far greater sense of personal stability after perhaps having felt stuck over the last 4 months. The more you believe in your ability to take better control of your long term future, the more you will succeed in doing just that. Don’t take risks – simply steadily progress.

Be confidant about what you are sensing when it comes to the true intentions of somebody else. This is a waiting game so don’t be tempted to move things along more quickly by stirring matters up. There are things you can enjoy with friends or any situation that involves you with a group of people that doesn’t cost a lot.

The more certain you have become in relation to your own wishes when it comes to somebody else the more powerful is your position to make this clear, especially if they take a dominating stance. You need to stick to practical facts. Anything too out of the ordinary will be ignored. Don’t overload yourself with obligations.

With this proposal, the 365-day rule for dental hygienists would be removed. This would allow all dental hygienists to treat a patient, regardless of whether they have been examined by a dentist within the preceding year, provided the CDHBC implement new standards of practice guiding independent practice. The proposal would require dental hygienists to inform a patient that a dental exam should be taken but would not be mandatory, leaving the choice to the patient. Dental hygienists clean teeth and provide preventive and therapeutic dental care. Similar changes are being proposed for denturists, who also have a 365-day rule relating to repairing and relining prescription authorized dentures. Section 55 (3) of the Health Professions Act requires that at least three months’ notice of proposed regulation amendments must be given. This time period will allow government to hear from stakeholders and the public on their view of the proposed changes.

Impaired Driving: What you need to know about driving under the influence of marijuana. Stephen Yung, Partner. Simpson, Thomas & Associates

I

mpaired driving is a common cause of death on the roads. When people think about impaired driving, they usually associate it with driving under the influence of alcohol; however, with the recent legalization of cannabis, people need to be just as aware about drug-driving.

The Motor Vehicle Act has a zero tolerance policy for alcohol and drugs in British Columbia. If your ability to drive is affected by drugs, then you will be issued a 24 hour Roadside Prohibition. If you are found to have a concentration of 5 nanograms of THC per milliliter of blood, or if you are found to have a concentration of Police can use saliva drug testing to 2.5 nanograms of THC per milliliter determine if Tetrahydrocannabinol of blood and 50 milligrams of alcohol (THC), the principal psychoactive per 100 milliliter of blood (combined alcohol and drug blood concentration), then you will be issued a 90 day Administrative Driving Prohibition.

component of cannabis used to determine blood-drug concentration, is present in your system. If it is, then the police can further necessitate a blood test to establish the amount of THC in your system and press drugimpaired driving charges. In August 2019, the National Post released an article about the slow start to the number of drug-impaired driving charges being laid based on blood samples. According to the article, “The RCMP’s national forensic labs had also anticipated a large spike in impaired driving blood toxicology work after cannabis was legalized, but so far it has failed to materialize.” Although it may be a slow start, if you are caught driving drug-impaired, you will face stiff legal penalties.

The Criminal Code of Canada considers it an offence to drive while impaired by alcohol, drugs or a combination of both. If you are charged with drugimpaired driving for having over 2 nanograms but less than 5 nanograms of THC per milliliter of blood within 2 hours of driving, then there is a maximum fine of $1,000. However, if you are charged with drug-impaired driving for having 5 nanograms or more of THC per milliliter of blood within 2 hours of driving, or if you are charged with impaired driving for having a combination of 50 milligrams of alcohol per 100 milliliter of blood and 2.5 nanograms or more of THC per milliliter of blood within 2 hours of driving, then the penalty is as follows: 1st offence: there is a manda• tory minimum of $1,000 fine and a maximum of 10 years imprisonment • 2nd offence: there is a mandatory minimum of 30 days imprisonment and maximum of 10 years imprisonment

• 3rd offence: there is a mandatory minimum of 120 days imprisonment and maximum of 10 years imprisonment The penalty for drug-impaired driving causing bodily harm or death is even more severe, ranging from a maximum of 2 years imprisonment less a day to a maximum of 14 years imprisonment to a maximum life imprisonment, depending on the type of criminal conviction. In British Columbia, a conviction of drug-impaired driving can also result in ICBC’s Driver Risk Premium and Driver Penalty Point Premium.

Will announce my next film in a month or two : ShahRukh Amid rumours of his upcoming films, Shah Rukh Khan has confirmed that he is working on 2-3 scripts and will announce his next acting project shortly. Shah Rukh was last seen in Aanand L Rai directorial Zero in December 2018.At the launch of the second season of Ted Talks, Shah Rukh was asked to address the reports and also if he would be announcing his next anytime soon. “I am taking time. I am thinking a lot. I am working on two-three scripts right now. As soon as they are ready, I am ready because most of the people working (on those scripts) are busy so I will it announce it myself. In a month or two I will figure out the time and everything,” he told reporters here. Two months ago, media reports surfaced suggesting the actor would

next collaborate with director Rajkumar Hirani. It was followed by the rumour that he was in talks with Bharat director Ali Abbas Zafar for an action film. Days after the speculation about a project with Zafar began, Shah Rukh took to Twitter to take a dig at various rumours about his upcoming films. “It’s always nice to know that in my absence & behind my back , I have surreptitiously signed so many films that even I am not aware of!! Boys & girls I do a film when I say I am doing it….otherwise it’s just post truth.”

Had to get my game together for Turram Khan : Nushrat Bharucha Nushrat Bharucha says coming from movies like Pyaar Ka Punchnama and Sonu Ki Titu Ki Sweety, no one could have imagined she'd do a Hansal Mehta film. The actor, who has worked with the filmmaker on Turram Khan, said the experience was enriching and challenging.Turram Khan is a social comedy based in a small town in Uttar Pradesh and also features Rajkummar Rao, Mohammad Zeeshan Ayub and Saurabh Shukla. Nushrat said Turram Khan is a different territory for her. "Hansal Mehta has combined comedy and it comes from a very strong space. I am

Getting more offers of content driven films now : Amyra Dastur: Amyra Dastur says she is happy with the way her career is shaping up. Actor Amyra Dastur says she is happy with the way her career is shaping up. The actor, who made her acting debut in 2013 film "Issaq", believes she is getting better opportunities now."I am very happy with the films that I am getting. I feel now I have started working more. I am given better opportunities and better roles as well."I pick up from what is offered to me. And if somebody is not offering me the right role and right film then I am not going to choose. But the doors are opening up, I am getting more content films now," Amyra said. The actor added that she doesn't get bogged down by the criticism or let the praise get into her head. "Everybody is entitled to have an opinion. You will have some people, who think you are are not a good actor because you are pretty. There will be people, who can see past your appearance and take you seriously. You will have pros

and cons.

A quick glance at her line-up of work reveals that Bhumi Pednekar is surely and steadily making her place in the industry. Even as she has been promoting Saand Ki Aankh on home turf, the actor took off to South Korea for the Busan International Film Festival where her film, Dolly Kitty Aur Woh Chamakte Sitare is set to be screened. Interestingly, at the behest of the festival heads, the actor won the Face of Asia award, conferred to her by a Korean film and fashion magazine. The actor said, "I am humbled that my work has resonated with

proud I was able to be a part of that world of Hansal sir's cinema. If you think about it, me coming from 'Pyar ka Punchnama' and 'Sonu Ke Titu Ki Sweety', no one would have thought she could do a Hansal Mehta film," Nushrat said. The actor said she is "blessed" the director could see her in a different space. "I kept on saying, 'I am scared. Sir, are you sure I can do this?' And he said, 'Yeah. You can'," she added.

audiences and critics in Busan. It’s my first international win, so I am proud. I have aspired to act in films that have something important to say, and have worked sincerely to deliver convincing performances. I hope to be part of cinema that will be remembered fondly in future."

Training very hard for Saina Nehwal biopic: Parineeti

I feel when you are willing to work hard, which I do." Amyra, who has been part of films like "Kung Fu Yoga", "Rajma Chawal" and "Judgementall Hai Kya", said she is careful about picking up roles. "I believe in slow and steady. I have been playing slow here. That is working at the end of the day. I am in no hurry, no rush. I will always choose quality over quantity."

Parineeti Chopra, who will play the role of ace badminton player Saina Nehwal in her forthcoming film, says she has been religiously learning the game and is neck-deep in the preparations for the biopic. “The shooting will start soon. I am currently training for it very hard. I am playing badminton for two hours and getting trained and doing prep work for an hour.“I recently wrapped up The Girl on The Train. These two films are very interesting films of my career and it is something I have not done before and I hope people like it,” Parineeti told reporters here at an event .The biopic, titled Saina, will be directed by Amol Gupte, who has helmed movies such as Stanley Ka Dabba and Hawa Hawaai.Parineeti also expressed excitement over her sister Priyanka Chopra’s Hindi film The Sky is Pink. The film hits theatres.“I am very excited about The Sky is Pink and I wish her all the best.”The actor was talking on the sidelines of Adex India – Mumbai Dive show Ocean Festival, where she was announced as the brand ambassador. Parineeti says she learnt diving five years ago when she had to shoot for an underwater sequence for her film Kill Dil.

Elect Brad Vis

FOR MISSION-MATSQUI-FRASER CANYON

brYf ivs ƒ cuxo imsæn, mYtskueI Aqy Pryjær kynIAOn qoN aumIdvwr My name is Brad Vis and I am the Conservative candidate for Mission—Matsqui—Fraser Canyon. Canada faces many problems heading into the 2019 federal election. It’s hard to decide which is most important, but some of the biggest issues we face are keeping our streets and communities safe, addressing the high cost of living and ensuring a fair, orderly and compassionate immigration system. On gang violence, the Conservative Party wants to prevent our youth from entering a life of crime. We will do this by restoring programs to stop gang violence cut by the Liberal government. The men and women of our police forces work incredibly hard to keep us safe, and for that, we owe them a debt of gratitude. More importantly, we owe them the resources they need, including funding for anti-gang task forces. On the cost of living, a Conservative government will bring back tax credits to make life more affordable for you and your family. For example, you will receive a rebate when you sign up your children for arts, dance and sport activities. We will also remove all taxes on maternity benefits, which will save a new mother up to $4,000 when she has a new baby. On immigration, the Conservative Party’s first priority will stand up for families and ensure that spouses and children can be reunited. We will end the illegal border crossings crisis by closing the loophole in the Safe-Third Country Agreement that allows some people to skip the line and avoid the queue. Finally, I am humbly seeking your vote. My commitment to you is to work with integrity, honesty, and to be a true voice for this riding. Sincerely, Brad Vis Conservative candidate for Mission—Matsqui—Fraser Canyon P.S. If you have any questions, please call me directly. I’d love to hear your questions and concerns. 604-302-9277 myrf nfm brYz ivs hY aqy mNY imsLn, mYtskueI, PryjLr kynIAWn qoN knsrvyitvs vwloN AumIdvfr hF. 2019 dIaF PYzrl coxF smyN kYnyzf leI keI cxOqIaF hn aqy ieh PYNslf krnf musLikl ho irhf hY ik ikhVI smwisaf vwD jLrUrI hY pr jo vwzy qy jLrUrI msly hn Auh hn muhWly ivwc vsdy lokF dI syPtI, hr iewk dI jLrUrI ijLMdgI dI KusLhflI qy sFB sMBflL, suwKF BrI ijLMdgI aqy hmdrdI Biraf iewmIgrysLn isstm. gYNg aprfDF dI gwl krIey knsrvyitv pfrtI ies gwl leI bhuq sMjIdf hY ik asIN juafnI nUM aprfD vflLy pfsy qoN pwkf rok leIey. asIN hr hIlf vsIlf kridaF gYNg aqy gMn klcr dy Kfqmy leI keI iksm dy pRogrfm idaFgy qy jo ilbrlF ny kIqf hY, krfeIm Aus qoN GtfvFgy. sfzI puls dy mrd aqy aOrqF sfzI surwiKaf leI loV qoN vI vwD XkInn kr rhy hn. asIN AunHF dy aihsfnmMd hF qy suLkrgujLfr hF. ienHF dy bhuq bhuq DMnvfd qoN ibnf asIN ienHF dIaF qmfm jLrUrqF dI pUrqI leI vI vcnbwD hF ijvyN ik aYNtI gYNg tfsk Poriss dy inrmfx leI PMz pYdf krny. knsrvyitv srkfr jfn dI bfjLI lf ky vI quhfnUM krjLf-mukq krn leI tYksF nUM Gtfey gI aqy quhfzI aqy quhfzy pirvfrF dI ijLMdgI nUM hr pfsy qoN smrwQ bxfey gI, imsfl dy qOr qy jdoN qusIN afpxy bwicaF nUM afrts, zFs aqy sports ivwc dfKl krfAuNgy qF afp jI nUM Krcy ivwc Cot imlygI. asIN jxypy vyly hox vflyL Krc Gtf ky quhfnUM bYnIiPwt dyvFgy aqy pihly bwcy nUM jnm dyx vflI hr mF nUM 4000 zflr df lfB ho jfvygf. iemIgrysLn Kyqr ivwc knsrvyitv pfrtI pirvfrF nUM, pqI pqnI nUM qy bwicaF nUM iewk QF rihx leI mOky dyx leI pihl dy aDfr qy kMm kr rhI hY. asIN gYr-kfnUMnI bfrzr krOisMg gqIaF iblkul Kqm krFgy aqy Qrz kMtrI aihd qy pihrf dyNidaF Auh sB cor-morIaF bMd kr ky ies rfhIN ho rhy aprfDF nUM Kqm kr idaF gy qy AunHF lokF dI aYNtrI vI Kqm kr idaFgy jo lfeIn BMn ky glq ZMg nflL dfKl ho rhyy hn. aKIr qy mYN inmfxf bMdf afp jI qoN vot mMg irhf hF, mYN quhfzy nflL idloN vfadf krdf hF ik mYN pUrI eImfndfrI nflL hr vyly kMm avFgf aqy afpxy ies hlky dI swcI afvfjL bx ky idKfvFgf. bhuq hI inmrqf sihq afp jI df brYz ivs knsrvyitv kYNzIzyt imsLn-mYtskueI-PryjLr kynIan ikrpf kirE, jy quhfzf koeI vI svfl hovy qF qusIN myry nflL iswDI gwl krdy irho. quhfzy svfl aqy msly suxny mYnUM bhuq ipafry lwgxgy: 604-302-9277

Considering a pre-construction condominium? (NC) Whether you’re thinking of buying a pre-construction condominium in Vancouver’s burgeoning real estate market or opting for a more relaxed lifestyle in a unit by the shores of the St. Lawrence River, you’ll probably be making one of the biggest purchases of your life. It can be difficult to know where to find what’s involved in buying a newly built condominium. That’s one of the reasons the Condominium Authority of Ontario (CAO) provides helpful information about buying a condominium. “It’s important to be aware of all of the steps in the purchase process and the potential outcomes during that process,” says Robin Dafoe, chief executive officer and registrar of the CAO. “There are many steps and approvals involved in a condominium development project, some of which may result in delays and could even require cancelling the project.”

Province funds local government poverty reduction strategies

As part of TogetherBC, British Columbia’s Poverty Reduction Strategy, the Province is providing $5 million to the Union of British Columbia Municipalities (UBCM) for the Poverty Reduction Planning & Action program. Interested communities can apply for funding to support local initiatives and plans that will help B.C. reduce the overall poverty rate by 25% and the child poverty rate by 50% by 2024. “Local governments see the impacts of poverty in their communities from the front lines,” said Shane Simpson, Minister of Social Development and Poverty Reduction. “These grants are an opportunity for our government to work with municipalities and community organizations in identifying their most pressing local issues and developing local solutions in the fight against poverty.”

Projects must involve key community partners, such as communitybased poverty reduction organizations, people with lived experience of poverty, businesses, local First Nations or Indigenous organizations. “Local governments have long advocated for a comprehensive approach to address the reality of poverty in B.C. communities,” said Coun. Murry Krause, UBCM past president. “This new funding program helps to advance TogetherBC’s priorities and will strengthen local co-ordination and implementation of poverty reduction plans.”

In June 2019, the Province announced $6 million for the Social Planning and Research Council of B.C. to fund Homelessness Community Action Grants for local projects aimed at reducing and preventing homelessness provincewide. Communities show leadership for a cleaner B.C. Communities throughout British Columbia are showing leadership through actions to reduce greenhouse gas (GHG) emissions and adapt to the effects of a changing climate, according to the latest report on local government corporate and community-wide actions.

the actions they take to reduce GHG emissions, are eligible for a CARIP grant. The grant provides a refund to local governments equal to 100% of the carbon taxes they pay. In 2018, communities received more than $8 million in carbon tax refunds compared to just over $7 million in 2017.

sign in the Clayton community,” said Doug McCallum, mayor of Surrey.

“Every year, more local governments are taking meaningful action to reduce their emissions,” said Selina Robinson, Minister of Municipal Affairs and Housing. “This shows communities, both big and small, are committed to working together to protect the environment, create sustainable, resilient communities and make life better for people today and well into the future.”

The 2018 CARIP report highlights not only communities that have reached carbon neutrality, but also those that have taken steps toward reducing their emissions through innovation.

In the District of Lillooet, community leaders implemented a plan to improve road safety for pedestrians and cyclists by expanding infrastructure and enhancing bike lanes.

In July 2018, the City of Surrey broke ground on the Clayton Community Centre, which is slated to become the first community centre in North America to achieve Passive House certification. To be certified, a building must consume up to 90% less heating and cooling energy than conventional buildings. Passive House certification is equivalent to the highest step in the BC Energy Step Code.

“We are pleased to embrace the importance of taking community-wide action to participate in the mitigation of facets of climate change,” said Peter Busse, mayor of Lillooet. “Our community action plan aims to make it safe and accessible for people to choose low-emission transportation.”

In 2018, 50 local governments reported achieving carbon neutrality through the Climate Action Revenue Incentive Program (CARIP), five more than in 2017. Each year, the communities, which are signatories to the B.C. Climate Action Charter and report annually on

In total, 95% of participating local governments report having a plan in place to support community-wide climate mitigation to reduce their carbon emissions.

The actions taken by local governments in 2018, both big and small, demonstrate the continued commitment of communities throughout the province to address climate change.

Supporting these local government initiatives is part of the Province’s CleanBC plan to use more clean and renewable energy, reduce climate pollution and create opportunities for people and businesses around B.C. “Investments in alternative energy, critical adaptation infrastructure and introducing ways to save money while reducing emissions are clear demonstrations of continuing leadership by communities across our province,” said George Heyman, Minister of Environment and Climate Change Strategy. “Working together to prepare for a cleaner, stronger and safer future is the CleanBC commitment. Together we are demonstrating impressive progress.” CleanBC was developed in collaboration with the BC Green Party caucus and supports the commitment in the Confidence and Supply Agreement to implement climate action to meet B.C.’s emission targets.
